Writer/director Izabel Pakzad built her feature directorial debut, Find Your Friends, from her own experience, an ominous car chase on a desert road late one night in the middle of a girls’ trip. That frightening pursuit, the sense of being cornered in a world with a baseline hostility to women, is the seed from which a compelling thriller grows.

But it’s not the whole story.

Starting with her own experiences might have been Pazkad’s catalyst, but Find Your Friends works because it’s willing to not just interrogate these threats, but to allow its characters to exist in a way that makes them far from perfect horror movie victims when those threats arrive. Intense, confrontational, and relentless, this is a film that begins as a psychological unraveling, then descends into revenge movie madness, all with a style perfect for the Euphoria generation.

Amber (Helena Howard) just went through a difficult breakup, and she’s looking forward to cutting loose during a trip out to the desert with her friends Lavinia (Bella Thorne), Zosia (Zion Moreno), Lola (Chloe Cherry), and Maddy (Sophia Ali). Her friends all think that what Amber needs is some drinks, drugs, and fun rebound sex, but Amber’s not so sure, particularly after her first attempt to hook up with a guy ends in the kind of casual sexual assault that’s easy for anyone who didn’t witness it to brush off.

Find Your Friends

Still, when the ladies make it out to Joshua Tree for their getaway, everyone’s in high spirits, and Amber’s hoping to put the past behind her and get lost in music and mood-altering substances. But the past won’t fade quite so easily, and the quintet of friends is about to find out that the present is even more frightening.

Structurally, this is a classic plot-driven thriller in which the decisions of the characters and their reactions to adversity inform who they are. We meet Amber and her friends mid-party, and aside from a couple of quiet moments, the party basically never ends, whether the girls are taking Molly at a desert concert or doing mushrooms in the wilderness. Along the way, we come to understand that, with adult responsibilities looming in their lives, these young women are all afraid of drifting apart, and they hope that a maelstrom of experience will bond them in such a way that they’ll reunite for a girls’ trip everywhere.

They’re trying to cling, often unhealthily, to a world in which they can hold each other up, and no one seems to need that more than Amber. Some characters don’t get as much detail brushed in as others – it’s really Amber’s movie despite its ensemble tendencies – but Howard, Thorne, and Moreno in particular imbue the film with emotional weight and palpable tension.

That tension comes from a few different places, whether it’s Amber trying to hold her friends responsible for what she considers abandonment at a key moment or Lavinia trying to wring every last drop of fun from the trip at all costs, but it’s most evident in the way the girls engage with their environment. If you’ve ever visited any kind of major party destination for twentysomethings, you’ve met these women. I bumped into an almost identical group recently at a resort in San Juan, and I’m sure I’m not alone in my sense of recognition.

These women are loud, energetic, intoxicated, and fiercely devoted both to each other and to their shared goal of shutting out the wider world in favor of an experience they curate together. While their behavior might be jarring at first, especially if you’re an old homebody like me, you soon realize that it’s the whole point of the dramatic tension Pakzad has set out to establish.

Find Your Friends trailer

These characters need to be loud, profane, sometimes even self-centered and annoying, because Find Your Friends is a movie that dares you to dislike them. Why? Because Pazkad is interested not just in the slowly unfolding revenge narrative in the film, or in the way Amber’s psyche fractures under the weight of increasingly isolating experiences, but in forcing her audience to confront their own biases. In the eyes of a misogynistic viewer, these women seem to be doing a textbook version of “asking for it” or “being a tease.” They drink, they twerk, they speak frankly and openly about their sexual experiences, and they’re not shy about what they want when it comes to men.

Pakzad places all of this deliberately in our faces so that, when the violence and confusion start to kick in, we’re forced to consider our own internalized misogyny and judgment of women like these. If you’ve ever chastised a horror movie character for making a bad decision, Find Your Friends wants to throw that judgment back in your face. It is a wonderfully thorny exploration of the film’s themes, and it creates a thread of piano wire-tight tension that builds to one of the year’s most unforgettable horror crescendos.

The film’s thematic oomph and the sheer energy of its pacing, helped along by editor Maxime Pozzi-Garcia and cinematographer Tim Curtin, is strong enough to mask some of its minor flaws. It could stand a bit more nuance, some tighter plotting, perhaps a bit quieter to let its ideas settle into place around the parties and the mayhem, but the film is so immediate and sensuous in its presentation, helped along by a pulsing soundtrack, that these things barely have time to take root in your mind.

This is a dreamy, feral little movie with a taste for blood, and I hope it finds the audience it deserves.

Find Your Friends arrives June 12 on Shudder.

An all girls trip into the desert for escapism fun instead implodes in violence in the trailer for Find Your Friends.

Find Your Friends begins streaming on Shudder on June 12, 2026.

In the film, “Amber and her four best friends flee Los Angeles for a girls’ trip in Joshua Tree, only to find themselves unwelcome in a desert town simmering with quiet hostility. As isolation sets in and encounters with aggressive locals grow more threatening, festering resentments within the group begin to surface. What begins as fun and reckless escape spirals into a violent struggle for control and survival, as past wounds and present dangers collide in a night that turns their trip into a revenge-fueled nightmare.”

Watch the new trailer below, which sees trust in short supply among friends once violence arrives.

Bella Thorne (The Babysitter), Chloe Cherry (“Euphoria”), Helena Howard (I Saw the TV Glow), Sophia Ali (Uncharted), Zion Moreno (“Gossip Girl”), and Chris Bauer (“True Blood”) star in the feature debut by writer/director Izabel Pakzad.

Pakzad produces alongside Allison Friedman, Andrea Iervolino, Luca Matrundola, Monika Bacardi, and Gary Michael Walters. Thorne serves as executive producer.

“We’re thrilled to share Find Your Friends, a visceral film that begins as an escape into the stark beauty of the desert and quickly descends into a gripping struggle where paranoia, resentment, and survival collide,” said Emily Gotto, senior vice president of acquisitions and productions at Shudder. “Audiences should prepare for an intense, emotionally charged experience that rethinks the trope of the final girl.”

Bella Thorne‘s (The Babysitter), Chloe Cherry (“Euphoria”), Helena Howard (I Saw the TV Glow), Sophia Ali (Uncharted), Zion Moreno (“Gossip Girl”), and Chris Bauer (“True Blood”) star.

The film follows Amber and her four best friends as they flee Los Angeles for a girls’ trip in Joshua Tree, only to find themselves unwelcome in a desert town simmering with barely concealed hostility.

After their encounters with the locals grow more threatening, resentments within the group begin to surface. Eventually their vacation spirals into a violent struggle for control and survival.

Writer-director Izabel Pakzad makes her feature debut on the project, inspired by her own terrifying experience on a similar getaway to Joshua Tree.

“Shudder champions work that refuses to play by the rules and challenges everything we think young women should be in genre films,” said Pakzad. “My hope was to make a film that audiences find to be raw, unapologetic and bold, and I am so grateful to be partners with them. I couldn’t imagine a more perfect home for Find Your Friends.”

Pakzad produces alongside Allison Friedman, Andrea Iervolino, Luca Matrundola, Monika Bacardi, and Gary Michael Walters. Thorne serves as executive producer.

Find Your Friends premiered at the 2025 Fantasia Film Festival. It went on to screen at Fantastic Fest and Toronto International Film Festival, among others.

Opinions on Scream: The TV Series haven’t budged for everyone these days, especially those who wrote the show off without giving it a real chance back then. To the surprise of others, though, they became invested in this little venture. While the television series can’t replace or surpass the movies, it also doesn’t deserve its bad rap.

Scream: The TV Series wasn’t the first of its kind; the slasher-whodunit format was previously used to great effect in Harper’s Island (2009). As it so happens, Jill E. Blotevogel worked on both series as a producer. These two similar shows each racked up impressive body counts; however, Blotevogel didn’t want to replicate Harper’s Island’s marketing ploy. “You knew, in every episode, that someone was going to die. […] That’s an exciting promise, but in a way, you’re waiting to find out who’s going to die in the next episode,” she said.

Whereas in Scream, one of its strengths was the unpredictability of victimhood. “We want to keep people off-balance, so that they don’t know necessarily when, if or how someone might die,” Blotevogel added.

The New Faces of Scream: The TV Series

scream
The cast of Scream: The TV Series.

Folks new to Scream may hate to be spoiled here, but MTV wasn’t exactly tight-lipped about Bella Thorne’s lack of longevity in the show. They went so far as to announce her character was the opening victim before the first episode even aired. And although Nina Patterson’s death doesn’t have remotely the same punch as that of Drew Barrymore’s character in the original movie, the series still wanted its own Casey Becker moment. That feeling of shock from witnessing the biggest name in the cast getting menaced and gutted in under ten minutes.

Older viewers would have little to no familiarity with Thorne’s work prior to Scream, yet the then-current MTV crowd probably knew her from Shake It Up. For them, it had to have been surreal to watch a former Disney Channel starlet get Ghostfaced. Meanwhile, Willa Fitzgerald, who played protagonist Emma Duvall, became more recognized after the show ended. From Reacher to The Fall of the House of Usher to Strange Darling, Fitzgerald’s star only rose after tangling with Ghostface.

Speaking of Ghostface, it’s best to get the mask business out of the way. That one small but huge change from the movies has haunted this show from the get-go. Even though there is a ghostly white mask strapped to the killer’s mug, it’s definitely not the one everyone associates with Ghostface. It’s been said that the show couldn’t initially secure the rights to the iconic “Father Death” costume (designed by Fun World), hence the creation of this new one.

Perhaps more than anything else in the series, that switcheroo is the biggest deterrent for new viewers. Borrowing the title leads to the understandable expectation that the classic Ghostface would be included. Aesthetically speaking, at least. On the other hand, going with a new mask denotes, as well as emphasizes, the separation of continuities.

The new Ghostface in Scream: The TV Series.

In some fairness, the series’ mask is effective in its own right. This design, having more of a human quality to its facial features, adds a certain bit of creepiness that the traditional Ghostface veneer lacked. It’s like staring into a blurry, warped mirror, trying to make sense of the reflection. Plus, anyone who saw this thing staring back at them in the dark would naturally be just as frightened, if not more so.

That ample opportunity to remake the 1996 movie is never actually taken in the series. There are bits and pieces that are inspired, but otherwise, the movie events don’t factor into the show. Regardless, the two properties have the same setup: a suburb is rocked by the killing of a local girl. Yet once the shock of Nina’s brutal murder has subsided, and other folks start to die, it’s clear that the Lakewood cast is on their own in their survival, apart from resident horror geek Noah Foster (John Karna). His readily available knowledge of the genre, as deep cutting as it can be, is about as helpful as it is now in the newer Scream movies. Knowing the ins and outs of tropes and trends ultimately can’t stop a madman.

Where the series mirrors the movies most is the killer (or killers, to be more exact). Motivations vary throughout the whole franchise, but the show took cues from its big-screen counterparts when explaining the whys of this Ghostface. There is that red herring of sorts, namely the local lore of Brandon James, that obscures the investigation. In true Scream fashion, though, no detail is irrelevant or goes unused. Everything traces back to the beginning, particularly the Brandon James underplot. Unfortunately, this storyline, along with the original cast, was abandoned after Season Two.

Season Three Resurrects the Series with a Reboot

The cast of Scream: Resurrection.

Despite having a strong second season, plus an amusing Halloween special, Scream slipped into production limbo. The show had been renewed for a third installment in 2016, but matters behind the scenes prevented anything from surfacing until 2019. By then, those in charge were gone; producers Blotevogel and Jaime Paglia were already replaced by Michael Gans and Richard Register in Season Two.

In addition, the Harvey Weinstein scandal played a part in the delay, seeing as how Weinstein was a former executive producer. Yet after the legalities and whatnot were all sorted, the third and final season premiered. Rather than sticking to a weekly schedule, those remaining six episodes were spread out over three consecutive days. The show had also made the lateral move from MTV to VH1. So, needless to say, there were a lot of changes made, including a whole new cast of would-be victims.

With new producers at the helm, including Queen Latifah, the last season was a complete reboot. To underline that reset, the backdrop went from the insidious suburbs to the gritty inner city. Keke Palmer was among that roster of fresh young fodder (a.k.a. the Deadfast Club), and the new killer had not a thing to do with the one(s) in prior seasons. On that note, the Ghostface mask was looking like its old self again, and the series had managed to recruit Roger L. Jackson. These positives, of course, could not withstand the tide of negative reviews for Scream: Resurrection. Not long after that, this attempt at turning the show into a seasonal anthology was over.

Ghostface returns in Scream: Resurrection

At one point in the premiere of Scream, the character of Noah proclaims: “You can’t do a slasher movie as a TV series.” He then goes on to say how “slasher movies burn bright and fast” and how “TV needs to stretch things out.” Immediately these statements came across as the show being down on itself before it had really begun. In hindsight, though, this was more of a challenge—not only to itself, but to everyone watching.

Was this a successful attempt at bringing the slasher subgenre to the small screen? Yes and no. There are stumbles along the way that the show can’t always recover from; the uneven pacing and excess of teen drama both come to mind. On the other end, when it’s focused on gruesome thrills and plot twists, the series is pretty damn entertaining. Had things gone differently for subsequent seasons, the fans would have finally gotten that meta story.

Under a different title, this show might have been granted more clemency. The turnout would have likely also been smaller, had that been the case. Even so, when met on its own terms, and accepting what it is rather than what it isn’t, this Scream is a solid stab at serializing the slasher movie.

Mitzi Peirone (Braid) directs from a script she co-wrote with Guinevere Turner (American Psycho), based on the 2021 novel Clare at Sixteen by Don Roff.

The film is set against a small town where a solitary woman (Thorne) is haunted by voices that lead her to assassinate ill-intended people and get away with it, until her last kill sucks her down a rabbit hole riddled with corruption, trafficking and visions from the beyond.

Bart Johnson (High School Musical), Joy Rovaris (“Beauty in Black”), Jan Luis Castellanos (“13 Reasons Why”), Dylan Flashner (The Card Counter), and Erica Dasher (“Jane by Design”) round out the cast.

“I think making Saint Clare taught me the same lessons the titular character is forced to master on her journey towards her own fate,” said Peirone. “To me, artists and people of faith are rather alike: both endeavors require relentless vision, unwavering belief, and sacrifice. So just like the martyred visionary general Joan of Arc, Clare has taught me that when you are destined with vision and clarity of purpose, then nothing can scare you – not loneliness, not violence, not being misunderstood and called insane, not rejection and ultimately not even death.”

“We are thrilled to share Saint Clare with audiences,” added Quiver Co-Presidents Berry Meyerowitz and Jeff Sackman. “The film unfolds as a visually striking and intense meditation into the sense of isolation and quiet evil that haunts this world, driven by a sublime performance from Bella Thorne and an evocative, gothic soundtrack from Zola Jesus.”

For the final film of Amityville month on Murder Made Fiction, Jenn and I are checking out Franck Khalfoun’s Amityville: The Awakening, the much maligned Dimension release that was shot in 2014 and eventually dumped on VOD in 2017.

The film, starring Bella Thorne and Cameron Monaghan as twin siblings who move into the Amityville house with their mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and younger sister (Mckenna Grace), occupies a strange place in the “franchise” canon.

Unlike most of the other texts, Amityville: The Awakening acknowledges the existence of the other films as films, specifically the 1979 original (listen), the 2005 remake (listen), and the incest-heavy prequel/sequel (listen). Admittedly Khalfoun’s script doesn’t go much further than that, descending into pretty basic/generic ‘Amityville haunting’ territory, but it’s an interesting wrinkle in what was clearly intended to be a theatrical re-launch for the “series.”

The other reason to explore this particular entry is how it handles disability representation (spoiler alert: not well!), tries to capitalize on Thorne’s popularity (she’s fine), and the “franchise”s continued use of solid practical FX for its possession sequences.

Monaghan actually does some really great work as both a comatose teen and a villain, though it’s hard to shake the ickiness of Khalfoun’s resolution, which veers into ableist territory after deliberately avoiding the euthanasia debate for the majority of its runtime.

Still, the film is an odd curiosity that likely would have revamped the flagging “series” had it made its way into more than a handful of theaters. And as folks who have read my ‘Amityville IP‘ editorial series know, this film is directly responsible for the glut of DTV knock-offs, which explodes in the years after The Awakening‘s release (2018-present).

So…that’s something.

Twice a month Joe Lipsett will dissect a new Amityville Horror film to explore how the “franchise” has evolved in increasingly ludicrous directions. This is “The Amityville IP.”

We’ve reached the last of the studio Amityville films with writer/director Franck Khalfoun’s Amityville: The Awakening (2017). It’s taken this editorial series a while to reach this milestone because we’re going through the Amityville films chronologically, though anyone familiar with the troubled production history of the film could feasibly argue this should have been covered back among the 2014 films (when the film was originally filmed) or 2016 (when reshoots were done and the film was originally scheduled for release).

In addition to those 2016 reshoots – the results of poor audience scores – the film was derailed due to its ties to the Weinstein/#MeToo movement. It was eventually dumped onto Google Play for free in late 2017.

Putting aside the scheduling challenges, though, how does the actual film fare?

For the first time in a long time, this isn’t simply a haunted object film or an Amityville film in name only. The Awakening directly acknowledges not only the existence of the original film, but also its sequel and the 2005 remake. Of course, the narrative purports that the events of the film are “real” while those texts are fictional, but the visual inclusion of not just the box art, but also a clip of the original film and the 1977 novel by Jay Anson, is an interesting creative decision.

Alas, this is one of the few adventurous decisions that Khalfoun makes. The vast majority of Amityville: The Awakening is a relatively derivative possession story, which finds the Walker family move into the iconic cat-eyed house on 112 Ocean Ave in order to provide better care for teenage son James (Cameron Monaghan), who has been in a vegetative state for two years following an accident.

The film’s protagonist is James’ twin Belle (Bella Thorne), who uncovers the tragic history of the house and, in time, deduces that James is being possessed by the same entity that made Ronnie DeFeo kill six members of his family forty years earlier. She does so with the help of new school friends Terrence (Thomas Mann) and Marissa (Taylor Spreitler), though both characters essentially disappear before the last act of the film to retain exclusive focus on the Walker family.

Amityville Bella Thorne movie

While the actual possession aspect of the narrative is pretty basic, the film has a number of bizarre and/or intriguing elements, although most of them sadly underdeveloped.

Early in the film the main source of conflict is the combative relationship between Belle and her mother Joan (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Right from the start, there’s tension between the two around the move: Belle is frustrated about moving in the middle of her senior year of high school, while Joan blames Belle for James’ condition. As the narrative progresses, we learn that James was injured when he fell (or was thrown) over a balcony and he was only there because he was defending Belle’s honor when the man leaked nude photos of her.

Joan and Belle also disagree about James’ prognosis. We learn that the move was undertaken in an effort to move James closer to his doctor, Milton (Kurtwood Smith), but James’ status hasn’t changed in two years. If similar medical cases are to be believed, he will never improve.

Belle admonishes her mother that “he’s not there” and chastises her when Joan requests an fMRI after James’ eyes open. Obviously discerning horror enthusiasts understand that this is due to the influence of the Amityville house and the Red Room in the basement, which Terrence explains is directly below James’ bed.

Belle believes that her twin brother is “gone” while Joan has literally forsaken God and moved the family, which includes youngest daughter Juliet (Mckenna Grace), to Hell in order to tap into the “power” that presides in the house – all in the hopes of resuscitating her son.

Amityville Horror Bella Thorne

This is fascinating in multiple ways. Not only is Amityville: The Awakening exploring the often unspoken idea that parents may prefer one child over another, but their larger familial debate essentially boils down to the debate surrounding euthanasia. In short: Belle maintains that the twin connection she and James had is gone, and that his vegetative state is nothing more than his physical body decaying. Even when this proven untrue and James begins responding to treatment in the new home, his first request via special AAC computer is to ask Belle to kill him.

This is still an Amityville film, however, so the film doesn’t really engage in a dialogue about each woman’s respective beliefs. And the message becomes confused in the climax when Belle drags her brother’s body past the binding circle to kill the demon and James is not only present, but thanks her verbally for killing him.

Naturally there’s also a hint of incest in the mix when Belle has a nightmare suggesting her mother’s relationship with James is sexual (we see James’ hand stroking his mother’s back). Unlike other films in the “franchise,” though, The Awakening never revisits the idea, defaulting instead to implied violence and predictable outcomes.

There’s a curious blandness to the film, as characters are seemingly forgotten or abandoned for long stretches (Belle’s friends, Jennifer Morrison’s Aunt Candice). Even the visual style of the film feels curiously flat: Khalfoun and cinematographer Steven Poster shoot the film in a perfunctory workman-like way, and despite its well-known cast, none of the performances stand out.

The most memorable aspect is when James finally (inevitably) awakens. His emaciated, shrunken body is done via a combination of special make-up prosthetics and digital effects, which are removed when James touches the wall of the Red Room. It’s a bizarre, almost surreal moment as his body inflates into Monaghan’s usual beefy frame, his jacked muscles and six pack abs fully on display. Alas this is the most exciting moment of the film, which proceeds to sic James on the family with a shotgun. Not only are the resulting deaths underwhelming or offscreen, but Monaghan is barely given the opportunity to play villain. The Awakening suffers in large part because Khalfoun sticks to familiar possession tropes, but also because when he refuses to embrace the interesting facets of his narrative, let scenes play out, or even allow his performers to react. The result is bland; this is a movie that just is.

2 skulls out of 5

Amityville: The Awakening

The Amityville IP Awards go to…

  • Best Death: Alas none of these deaths are remotely interesting. Morrison is utterly wasted as Aunt Candice, who appears in only a few scenes before she is shot offscreen. Joan’s death is more drawn out as she is given the opportunity to acknowledge that James is not her son before she, too, is shot. There is a tiny bit of blood splatter, but ultimately both deaths are underwhelming.
  • Worst Exchange: Terrence proposes he, Marissa and Belle watch either the original film, its sequel, or the Ryan Reynolds remake, prompting Marissa to offer the groan-worthy line “remakes totally blow.” The obvious metacommentary feels painfully antiquated by 2017, and also weirdly feels like the film is dissing itself. Utterly baffling.
  • Child Acting: Unsurprisingly Grace does well as Juliet, despite being given nothing more to do than speak to James when he’s unresponsive and then be put in danger when he awakens. Still, her star quality is evident even here.
  • CGI Intrigue: Like many low budget studio films of this era, there’s a reliance on not great digital FX. The moment when Dr. Milton rolls James over to discover his festering wounds are filled with bugs who then promptly fly into the doctor’s mouth isn’t terribly rendered, though like too many horrific moments in the film, this is quickly proven to be nothing more than a (waking) nightmare.
  • Celebrity Nudes: The plot point about Belle’s leaked photos was topical in 2014 (this is when celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence were publicly contending with it). Ironically Thorne herself would go through it herself in 2022, prompting her to post her own photos in order to reclaim agency and deny her blackmailer.

Next Time: We’re checking out Amityville: Mt. Misery Road (2018) from husband and wife directing team Chuck and Karolina Morrongiello!

Out of all the programming categories at Sundance, it’s NEXT that proves to be the most divisive. Saved for “pure, bold works distinguished by an innovative, forward-thinking approach to storytelling,” it’s essentially the home of arthouse cinema. So it should come as no surprise that Eddie Alcazar‘s weird-as-hell Divinity, which just had its world premiere at the festival, falls right into that category.

Set in an alternate universe (or a near future?), Divinity sees scientist Sterling Pierce (Scott Bakula, Quantum Leap) dedicate his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of a groundbreaking serum named Divinity. Years later, his son Jaxxon Pierce (Stephen Dorff, Blade) now controls and manufactures the drug, resulting in a hedonistic planet that has been left 97% infertile, but immortal. Two alien brothers (Moises Arias and Jason Genao) arrive with a plan to abduct the mogul, only to be surprised by the sudden arrival of a sex worker named Nikita (Karrueche Tran, TNT’s Claws), who complicates their plans. Meanwhile, in another universe (or planet?) a female race led by Ziva (Bella Thorne, The Babysitter films) aims to undo the destruction caused by Divinity.

Divinity is fucking weird. There’s no way around it. Though it has a more linear narrative than your typical experimental film, its black-and-white, 16mm-shot assault on the senses is bound to divide viewers. Writer/director Eddie Alcazar, returning to the screen for the first time since 2018’s Perfect, gives us a unique vision that doesn’t offer much handholding for viewers. It’s best to just sit back and enjoy(?) the ride.

Though it’s aesthetically reminiscent of the lo-fi production of sci-fi television shows from the ’60s, the themes that Divinity grapples with apply to our modern world. Keying into society’s penchant for selfishness and self-preservation, especially in these post-pandemic times, Alcazar has more on his mind than a silly little sci-fi adventure.

Sundance Divinity

Dorff may get top billing, but he does end up buried under a great deal of makeup for most of the film’s runtime, so the emotional core falls on Tran, Arias and Genao. Tran, especially, gives a mesmerizing and ethereal performance. It is through Nikita that the alien siblings gain a semblance of humanity, learning to understand what it means to be human and the detrimental effects Divinity has had on the race.

The worldbuilding is exquisite, so it’s no wonder that an industry titan like Steven Soderbergh opted to produce the film. Divinity is a vibe, but what the film lacks in commercial appeal it more than makes up for in a seemingly unending supply of creativity. Makeup effects on a continuously transforming Dorff impress, and a climactic battle filmed in stop motion dazzles. Jacob Flack and Mark A. Mangini‘s sound design is impeccable, adding an even more ominous layer to the proceedings.

As abstract as Divinity can be, it sometimes doesn’t trust its audience to fully understand what it’s trying to say, with Nikita even vocalizing the film’s central message about midway through the film. It offers little handholding for viewers, but when it does it pulls you out of the film. These moments are few and far between, but because of that it makes the moments that they do occur feel even more jarring.

Expect Divinity to perplex more viewers than it doesn’t (cries of “pretentious bullshit” will be inevitable), but for those that can appreciate the sheer ambition of the film’s scope, there’s a treat to be found within. Immortality is a constant talking point in the film, but what does that really mean? Is it merely that one body lives forever? Or is it something more than that? For those willing to meet Divinity halfway, they may find the answer.

Divinity had its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and is currently seeking a distributor.

Step into darkness and feed your fears with the “American Horror Stories” Season 2 trailer, with the new episodes of the spinoff anthology series premiering July 21 on FX on Hulu.

A new nightmare will be featured each week, and the “American Horror Stories” Season 2 trailer teases everything from creepy dolls to ghosts, serial killers to sexually-active cadavers.

Yup, that’s Ryan Murphy for ya! Watch the first official Season 2 trailer below, which reveals that the season’s guest stars will include Denis O’Hare and Bella Thorne, among others.

Other notable names featured in Season 2 include Alicia Silverstone, Cody Fern, Judith Light, Max Greenfield, Madison Iseman, Gabourey Sidibe, and Quvenzhané Wallis.

The spinoff anthology features hour-long contained episodes, and it’s exclusively available through FX on Hulu. The new series mostly tells original stories unconnected to the main “AHS” series, though Season 1 was book-ended by a “Murder House” continuation.

FX reminds, “Since 2011, the creators of the AHS have redefined the horror genre with various installments featuring a creepy asylum, a coven of witches, a traveling freak show, a haunted hotel and the apocalypse itself. The television series sprouted a legion of dedicated fans who anticipate what terrors the next chapter will hold.”

Deadline notes, “According to FX, American Horror Stories marked the most successful launch of any FX on Hulu series to date.” No surprise there, as “AHS” has long been a hit franchise.

Masquerade is defined as a false pretense or pretending to be someone or something else. Writer/Director Shane Dax Taylor opens his home invasion thriller to a masquerade fundraiser as a misdirect, instead of hoping to make something more meaningful out of his title by the end credits. But Masquerade sticks too closely to the formula for too long, unable to muster any suspense along the way until a confusing third act.

Art brokers and married couple Olivia (Mircea Monroe) and Daniel (Austin Nichols) enjoy a night out at a masquerade fundraiser event. Meanwhile, their pre-teen daughter Casey (Alyvia Alyn Lind) falls asleep on the couch watching suspense movies with her babysitter, Sofia (Joana Metrass), in the family’s upscale home. That’s when Man (Michael Proctor) and Woman (Skyler Samuels), donning facial and voice obscuring gear, break into the house to steal valuable artwork. As Man gets way more violent than Woman would like, caterer Rose (Bella Thorne) keeps a very close eye on Olivia and Daniel, even going as far as to offer the tipsy pair a ride home.

The main focus falls on Casey’s attempts to escape the home invaders, who’ve inexplicably decided to spend their attention on her rather than the quick grab. Taylor toggles back and forth between locations, ever so slowly setting the home invasion and the unaware couple on a divergent path. Man’s sudden switch to violence, escalating the situation tenfold, is a transparent contrivance that doesn’t make much sense. Nor does it inject any tension; this home invasion thriller is devoid of any thrills.

Much of the film rests on Lind’s shoulders, but there’s not enough there for her to rise to the occasion. She’s relegated to damsel in a fetal position, hovering in crawlspaces and attics for much of it. Man and Woman bicker about how to retrieve her. At this early point of the runtime, the story stalls out and stays there for far too long. Similarly, Rose’s tabs on the increasingly inebriated couple goes no where for long stretches as well. The plot ultimately goes nowhere until its clunky finale.

The third act brings some muddled revelations that make it clear that everything that came before was meant to build up the impact, but it’s so messily handled that it takes many retracing steps to connect the dots. We don’t actively care about any of these characters, making this late-game exposition feel rushed and clunky. It’s an ultimately forgettable affair in a crowded subgenre without visual or narrative interest and an extremely barebones plot.

By the end, it’s clear that Taylor saved his energy and most interesting ideas for the end. So much effort gets spent on the hook that everything that came before lacks any life. Instead of retroactively casting preceding plot details in a more enriching light, it just winds up a rushed, perplexing punchline in a formulaic home invasion thriller. With lifeless performances, a distinct lack of suspense or scares, and a by-the-numbers plot, Masquerade does ironic live up to its definition. This home invasion thriller pretends to be far less tedious than it really is.

Masquerade releases in limited theaters and VOD on July 30, 2021.

Bella Thorne has become a big name amongst the horror crowd and it’s by design as the actress is also a huge fan herself.

After appearing in MTV’s “Scream” series, she went on to star in Keep Watching, Amityville: The Awakening, Assassination Nation, I Still See You, and of course, The Babysitter films.

Next up is the home invasion thriller Masquerade, available On Digital, On Demand & In Select Theaters July 30th from Shout! Studios.

In speaking with Bloody Disgusting’s The Boo Crew Podcast, Bella revealed that she’s a life-long horror fan who never watched Disney movies growing up. Sam Raimi’s The Grudge remake was the first movie to scare her: “It’s the first one that really, really stayed with me,” she explained, noting that she had to sleep with family members after.

“Horror is a way of life,” she adds. “Everything in horror movies that you feel – the physicality, the anxiety, the edge of your seat – all those emotions you feel in life.”

While she’s in the dark on the potential of a third Babysitter – “I don’t know maybe they’re cutting me out of it,” she jokes – Thorne reveals ambitions to get behind the camera on Ryan Murphy’s “American Horror Story”.

“I love Ryan Murphy and he was really, really, really pioneering, in general, horrific tv. Ryan Murphy changed the idea that horror can really be in tv – that you can watch it week after week, binge in a series, you can watch 20 hours of horror in one sitting and it be normal,” Thorne explains. “There were not a really lot of shows that did that…I think that really helped the horror genre in general.”

In regards to being a huge horror fan, she tells Boo Crew that The Strangers is one of her all-time favorites and also reveals that she has a life-sized Babadook in her house!

“I love The Babadook – I actually have a life-sized Babadook in my house,” explains Bella. “For a long time we had it in the bathroom and it was behind the door so that whenever anybody would open the door it would hit the Babadook, so then it would look like it was moving and shaking.” She continues, joking: “Everyone was so terrorized by that Babadook in the bathroom.”

Listen to the episode with the multi-award-winning actor, best-selling author, billboard charting singer, writer/director, entrepreneur and pop culture icon below!

Bella Thorne (“Scream”, Girl, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Amityville: The Awakening) turns bad in the upcoming home invasion thriller Masquerade, which is previewed in the first ever still, courtesy of USA Today.

The film follows 11-year-old Casey (Alyvia Lind), who must survive the night after a group of intruders, led by the above pictured Rose (Thorne), break into her family’s home to steal their priceless artwork. “The stakes are high as the crew will stop at nothing to get what they want until a shocking twist ending.”

It was also revealed that the thriller, written and directed by Shane Dax Taylor, will be released in limited theaters and on VOD platforms this coming July 30th, via Shout! Studios.

“With Masquerade, Shane Dax Taylor pulls off a dazzling cinematic sleight of hand that caps this tense, taut thriller,” said Jordan Fields, Shout!’s VP Acquisitions when originally announced. “The cast, led by a dynamic and brooding Bella Thorne, is highly effective in Taylor’s dark tale of truth and consequences.”

A trailer should be imminent.

Actor-turned-director Chad Faust‘s feature debut couldn’t have a more generic title. The idea behind it is that its lead protagonist could be a stand-in for any number of troubled youths from anywhere in the USA that suffered neglect or abuse. Kids that were forced to grow up too soon from the years of shouldering adult responsibilities. Girl refers to the unnamed protagonist that finds herself in over her head when she returns to her hometown with revenge in mind. It’s never quite as meaty or complex as the intent, but Faust’s debut does offer up an engaging enough neo-noir thriller anchored by strong performances.

Girl (Bella Thorne) never got to know her father. He walked out on her when she was six, but not before beating her mother to the point of inflicting permanent disability and pain—having cared for her mother ever since, Girl harbors severe resentment towards dad. Out of the blue, she receives a letter from dad promising to kill Girl’s mother. She embarks on a quest to confront her father and end his life, only when she arrives in his rural small town, she discovers someone beat her to the punch. Running afoul of the local Sheriff (Mickey Rourke), Girl will uncover dangerous secrets about her family that threaten her very survival.

A tabloid regular, Thorne’s preceding reputation likely plays a huge factor in expectations going into this neo-noir thriller. Perhaps she channels that into her character, but Girl marks her best performance to date by a mile. This femme fatale exudes pure rage, making her a formidable foe when standing up to the sleazy Sheriff and the even creepier Charmer (Faust). Girl may excel at wielding a tomahawk, but it’s her complete lack of tact and finesse that makes the character so interesting. In a town where locals are hostile and women traveling alone make for easy prey for men like Charmer and Sheriff, Girl’s awkward ability to stomp and punch her way into everyone’s business makes for a refreshing change of pace. It’s even more so when it’s at her detriment, which is nearly always the case. While Rourke nails a character type he’s played many times before, he’s nearly upstaged by Faust as the aggressive loose cannon.

This trio of actors, along with Faust’s confident direction, propels the revenge thriller forward when the narrative’s over simplicity could’ve derailed it. There are shocking reveals for Girl to confront, adding icky implications and thrilling conflict to the fold. Still, it’s a straightforward revenge tale without much depth. It’s also prone to clunky dialogue.

Bursts of brutal violence, a raw lead performance, and quick pacing ensure this threadbare but engaging exploration of the gritty underbelly of rural life entertains. Girl may get put through the physical and emotional wringer, but Faust eschews neo-noir convention by weaving in a thread of hope. Though it ultimately amounts to a routine revenge thriller, Faust coaxes impressive acting from his leads and demonstrates skillful promise for future efforts.

Girl opens in select theaters November 20 and on VOD platforms November 24, 2020.

In The Babysitter, bullied twelve-year-old Cole Johnson (Judah Lewis) bonds with his cool babysitter Bee (Samara Weaving), but their fun goes awry when he witnesses a Satanic sacrifice. Bee and her friends spend the evening trying to kill Cole, but most of them wind up dead instead. All except Bee, who vanishes without a trace. While consensus on the horror-comedy remains split, Weaving’s infectious presence has been a unanimous highlight of McG‘s movie. Could a sequel manage to capture the same level of charm without her? Well, sort of.

Like most horror sequels, The Babysitter: Killer Queen opts to go bigger and gorier. But mostly, it just gets dumber. And it’s really, really dumb.

Two years after the events of the first film, Cole’s still stuck on that fateful night. Aside from the trauma of it all, that Bee was never found leaves Cole trapped in a constant state of fear that she could return at any time. However, his parents think he’s lost his grip on reality and are desperate to find him psychiatric help. When neighbor Melanie (Emily Alyn Lind) whisks him away on a weekend trip to the lake, old foes reappear, and Cole’s worst fears are realized.

Nearly everyone returns for this sequel. In addition to Lewis and Lind, with Lind’s role expanded this round, McG re-enters the director’s seat. Bee’s underlings Max (Robbie Amell), Sonya (Hana Mae Lee), Allison (Bella Thorne), and John (Andrew Bachelor) resume their attempts to murder Cole as if no time has passed. Leslie Bibb, Ken Marino, and Chris Wylde round out the recurring players as Cole and Melanie’s parental figures. The only real new, notable addition is Phoebe (Jenny Ortega), the new kid at school unafraid to march to her own drumbeat.

While the setup remains the same, in which Cole must survive the night against an onslaught of murderous Satanists, this sequel tries to carve out a separate identity through MTV-like irreverent, loud style. If you’ve ever stumbled upon a meme in which an AI bot penned a script after watching 1,000 hours of movies, well, Killer Queen feels a lot like that. Writer Dan Lagana packs in movie references in nearly every single line of dialogue. That’s not an exaggeration. Then there’s the comic book style texts that pop up on the screen, goofy interludes, and jokes that elicit groans over guffaws. After a point, the sequel feels like it’s trying way too hard to find the pulse of modern teen culture.

As obnoxious as the humor gets, there’s some fun to be had despite itself. Amell is a welcome return; jock Max is an affable villain that manages to endear with his supportive nature even during bloodthirsty moments. And Jenny Ortega steals the film right out from under Judah Lewis. Phoebe may start as an eccentric but quickly proves far more formidable, intelligent, and genuine. Then there’s the splattery fun; Killer Queen ups the body count and the explosive viscera along with it.

Overall, Killer Queen proves that this is a concept that works best when Weaving is on screen. Fans of the first film might find themselves entertained here, but it won’t win over anyone grated by this brand of puerile comedy. While there are a few triumphant surprises in store, this sequel tried to recreate its predecessor’s highlights while overstuffing it with pop culture references, high school tropes, and contrived shenanigans. There’s at least enough here to ensure you won’t be bored. In terms of mindless entertainment, that is.

The Babysitter: Killer Queen releases on Netflix on September 10, 2020.

Join in as Gavin Rossdale of the multi-platinum selling rock band, BUSH, hangs out for the latest episode of The Boo Crew! Delve into some of Gavin’s favorite horror films and more, including a look into BUSH’s fantastic eighth album The Kingdom that has just been released.

The album has some genre lineage itself featuring production and several co-writes with film composer Tyler Bates, known for his work in movies like 2004’s Dawn Of The Dead, The Devil’s Rejects, Slither, 300, Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Ti West’s The Sacrament, Deadpool 2, the John Wick series and his collaborations with Marilyn Manson.

“He’s got scary posters up the wall to his studio. It’s all about that stuff. The Hills Have Eyes….everything has eyes! Everything’s watching you!”

One of the songs Gavin and Tyler crafted called Bullet Holes ended up on the soundtrack for John Wick : Chapter 3 – Parabellum. It echoes a cinematic sound that BUSH has cultivated over the years. Gavin talks about that visual tendency.

“I’m just crazy about atmosphere and wide sounding records. I love film music so much that even if I do these heavier records, I still want that wide sound. I don’t like abrasive sounds. I like it really smooth and powerful. I can’t help it. I love Brian Eno he’s one of my favorites. John Williams, Gabriel Yared. I just love all those guys that take your breath away with music in movies because it’s such an integral part of elevating a scene. Music is so powerful.”

Rossdale has stepped from the stage to the big screen a few times as well, as an actor. One such time was in Francis Lawrence’s 2005 film adaption of the DC/Vertigo comic book character, Constantine, alongside Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz and Shia LaBeouf. Celebrating its 15th anniversary, the film is still being discovered and rediscovered by fans. The story featured Gavin as a mischievous half-demon named Balthazar (finger lickin’ good!) who got to rock some amazing prosthetics courtesy of the fine folks at Stan Winston studios and some rather sharp pinstripe suits!

“They kept the suits in case of the danger of a sequel. When I saw Keanu in New York when I went to the premiere of John Wick, I was like dude, there’s all these terrible sequels being made how is there not a Constantine sequel? I wanna be risen from the dead like a genie! He said, “I think it didn’t make enough money”. Maybe it’s like this slowburn you are talking about. Maybe it’s gonna come back and there’s going to be this desire. I think Keanu could still do it. I’m ready. I think it would be wonderful to resurrect that character!”

In case you were wondering, Balthazar’s fancy coin tricks were all done by Gavin himself, without the aid of a stunt double.

“Oh for three full months! I had a specific coin. Three full months I did it everyday all day long. Whatever I was doing.”

Gavin tells us he is set to return to film once again in another religious themed project that is already getting its share of controversy.

“I’ve just done a movie with Janell Shirtcliff, who’s an amazing photographer and it’s called Habit. Paris Jackson is playing Jesus, so there’s already like three hundred thousand people who are against her playing Jesus which is brilliant! It’s amazing promo I love it! Keep it coming! Yeah we’re terrible people. Satan’s here! Bella Thorne(‘s character) is obsessed sexually with Jesus. So they thought they were upset about Paris, wait til they find out what the movie is!”

Bella Thorne (Amityville: The Awakening, Keep Watching, The Babysitter, I Still See You) has joined yet another genre pic, this time starring in director Mitzi Peirone’s post-apocalyptic thriller The Uncanny, reports Deadline.

“The Uncanny presents a future where every citizen is implanted with a chip capable of controlling everything from emotions to directions, until a routine update backfires, causing a cyber apocalypse. Wiping out most of humanity, five strangers miraculously survive, now forced to live hidden in a bunker with their implants ripped from their spines. They were the few lucky enough to survive – until Scarlet (Thorne) begins to suspect they were not saved at all, or by chance.”

Written by Peirone and Chaya Doswell, Rebecca Berrih (Elysian Fields Entertainment), who recently produced Beyond the Sky which was released by RLJ entertainment, produces with Thor Bradwell (JT Leroy) and Courtney Shepard.

“The story offers a timely and compelling glimpse into human’s dependence on technology and the greater evils of such addiction,” says Shepard about Uncanny. “We’re excited to have Bella on board for such a strong female-led team. I have no doubt Mitzi will craft something visually and thematically stunning.”

Peirone directed, wrote and executive produced the mystery thriller Braid, pictured below, which made its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival two years ago.

From Amityville: The Awakening to Keep Watching and I Still See You, Bella Thorne has played heroine several times in horror. Next she’s playing the big bad in Shane Dax Taylor’s Masquerade, a home invasion thriller which he’ll direct and write, says Deadline.

“The film follows 11-year-old Casey (Alyvia Alyn Lind; pictured below in Daybreak) who must survive the night after a group of intruders, led by Rose (Thorne; “Scream”, The Babysitter), break into her family’s home to steal their priceless artwork. The thieves will stop at nothing to get what they want until the shocking twist ending.”

Austin Nichols (The Walking Dead) and Mircea Monroe (Episodes, Book Club, Fifty Shades of Black) will star as Casey’s parents, with Skyler Samuels (The Gifted) as Rose’s cohort.

Taylor will produce alongside Steven Schneider (Insidious, Glass) and Kenneth Burke (Soul Surfer).

The project will shoot in Kentucky.

McG (Terminator Salvation, Rim of the World) took on the horror genre with The Babysitter, a slasher film that followed a lonely, 12-year-old boy who falls in love with his hot babysitter only to discover that she’s part of a satanic cult that wants to kill him.

Samara Weaving carried the entire film on her shoulders and returned for one final scare in a mid-credits sequence, while Judah Lewis also survived the coming-of-age slasher. As we suspected, Lewis is returning for The Babysitter 2, although Weaving is not.

We also learned that the slasher will also star Robbie Amell, Hana Mae Lee, Bella Thorne, Emily Alyn Lind, Andrew Bachelor, Ken Marino, Leslie Bibb, Carl McDowell, and Chris Wylde.

Dan Lagana is confirmed as the new screenwriter. For those of you unaware, Lagana is the writer-producer of Netflix’s must-see faux docuseries “American Vandal”. So that’s a good thing.

In the Mc-G-directed sequel, “Two years after defeating a satanic cult led by his babysitter Bee, Cole’s trying to forget his past and focus on surviving high school. But when old enemies unexpectedly return, Cole will once again have to outsmart the forces of evil.”

Shooting begins October 14th in Los Angeles.

After being acquired out of the Sundance Film Festival, Neon is slicing and dicing into theaters with their ultra-violent Assassination Nation, which they’ll release on September 21.

The film just got a brand new red band trailer, which boasts a Purge-meets-Heathers-like thriller that’s overflowing with violence. I love that it’s a modern take on the witches of Salem (they’re not actually witches in this), only here, everyone’s going to pay for what they’ve done.

“This is a thousand percent a true story about how the quiet, all-American town of Salem, absolutely lost its mind.”

Fred Topel reviewed the film after its World Premiere, calling it “The Salem Wikileaks Trials”.

In the Sam Levinson-directed Assassination Nation…

“High school senior Lily and her group of friends live in a haze of texts, posts, selfies and chats just like the rest of the world. So, when an anonymous hacker starts posting details from the private lives of everyone in their small town, the result is absolute madness leaving Lily and her friends questioning whether they’ll live through the night.”

The film stars Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, Abra, Bill Skarsgard, Bella Thorne, Colman Domingo, Joel McHale, and Aniki Noni Rose.

In addition to yesterday’s trailer debut, here’s some new art that shows several American ninjas who are coming for blood.

In Sam Levinson‘s film:

“This is a thousand percent a true story about how the quiet, all-American town of Salem, absolutely lost its mind.”

The trailer is politically charged, hence the “trigger warning”. It’s also remarkably violent, looking to spill blood as often as possible. Fred Topel reviewed the film after its World Premiere, promising that it “does not disappoint.”

Jeremy Ungar wrote and directed the feature, which also stars Will Brill and Jessie T Usher. Blue Fox will show buyers in Berlin a first-look promo from the production, which is in post and has gone through Unified Pictures’ genre fund.

“This edge-of-your-seat thriller shows the dangers that lie at our fingertips every day in our complex technology-obsessed society,” said Blue Fox’s head of international Lisa Gutberlet.

Unified’s Keith Kjarval and Tyler Jackson are producing with Sefton Fincham of Look To The Sky Films. Wayne Marc Godfrey and Robert Jones of The Fyzz Facility serve as executive producers.

Released theatrically for one night in October 2017 before its unceremonious arrival on DVD and streaming platforms February 6, Keep Watching is the mash-up of The Strangers, Saw and Unfriended that no one asked for. Presumably conceived by writer Joseph Dembner as some kind of commentary on our fascination with, and indifference to, watching human suffering on social media, he and director Sean Carter construct a messy, suspenseless home invasion thriller that will likely keep audiences busier thinking about the logistics of the invaders’ efforts to chronicle and broadcast their bloody handiwork than the actual brutality or motives behind it.

The film stars Bella Thorne (The Babysitter) as Jamie Mitchell, a moody teenager returning from a 10-day trip with her recently-remarried dad Adam (Ioan Gruffudd, San Andreas), well-meaning stepmom Olivia (Natalie Martinez, Under The Dome) and video game-obsessed younger brother DJ (Chandler Riggs, The Walking Dead). Settling in from the trip, their night is interrupted by the arrival of Matt (Leigh Whannell, Insidious), Adam’s ne’er-do-well brother, asking to stay for the night. But just as everyone heads to bed, a noise draws the family downstairs for a disturbing announcement by the masked Creator (Christopher James Baker, The Purge: Election Year): they must kill an assailant known as The Terror (Matthew Willig, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) or be killed themselves. The night descends into terror as the Mitchells fight for their lives, eventually learning that their struggle for survival is being recorded and streamed for millions of viewers to watch.

Part of the problem with Keep Watching is that there is not one new idea in the film in terms of concept, characters or story – and further, its execution isn’t good enough to distract from the complete lack of originality. The Creator and his team break into the Mitchell house, set up what has to be hundreds of cameras in the most unnecessary and superfluous locations in each room, all to broadcast the potential murder of a random family to their, uh, how many viewers. One supposes that The Terror’s cruelty and violence is supposed to be so awful that it’s all you can focus on, but seriously – how many people would have to be involved to set up something like that? How many monitoring everything to make sure it’s operating properly? (There’s a drone involved as well – surely they can’t watch all 300 angles and pilot that at the same time.) And how is it being broadcast to hundreds or thousands of viewers – which the news media knows is happening, thanks to an incident in the opening scene where viewers of an earlier home invasion perpetrated by the same people are interviewed – without the authorities either shutting down the live stream electronically, or locating its source (or even the victims) directly? “Suspension of disbelief” should not be the only answer.

As Jamie, Thorne is appropriately terrorized, but I’m not convinced there’s enough to the character to justify the Creator’s fascination with her, much less her supposed fortitude in the face of a completely unprovoked series of brutal murders of her closest family members. Hers is the most substantive introduction, thanks to myriad social media posts helpfully revisited where she talks about feeling alone, or disliking her stepmom, or otherwise clearly and concisely articulates what amounts to teenage angst. Conversely, Martinez brings a surprising amount of nuance to Olivia given how little screen time she gets before the carnage begins. But then again, she and the rest of these characters are so woefully underdeveloped that I defy audiences to care deeply about their fates; most disappear or (spoiler) are knocked off before they can make any sort of memorable impression. As far as Creator and The Terror are concerned, don’t expect any answers or explanations to justify their decision to terrorize random families, nor reveal whatever resources they apparently have to finance their endeavor to commercialize serial murder.

At barely 90 minutes, Keep Watching is thankfully brief, hustling through its expository introduction towards some empty suspense and poorly-photographed violence; one thing that stationary cameras do not do well is offer close-up detail when bodies are in motion, and especially when all of the action is shrouded in darkness. Meanwhile, its final scene arrogantly presumes there will be enough interest, or even intrigue, to move forward with a sequel or follow-up – what will the survivors do in order to last another day when faced with a me-or-them quandary virtually impossible to consider? In which case, and at least based on what audiences have been shown thus far, to continue to watch this aspiring franchise feels like the least desirable option, turning a document of brutal violence into a bland retread, and undermining potentially incisive commentary about the hypnotic power of social media by creating content so unengaging that no one will care enough to see it through to the end.

Sean Carter’s long-delayed Keep Watching, which released for one night only on Halloween, will be arriving on DVD and VOD platforms tomorrow, February 6, 2018.

“In the film, a family imprisoned by intruders must play a terrifying life-and-death game in which the mysterious rules become clear as the night unfolds.”

This exclusive clip features a POV scene from the film when the killers break into the house, as well as an appearance from Bella Thorne (Amityville: The Awakening, The Babysitter). Bonus factoid: the film was shot in the same house as Radio Silence’s “10/31/98” V/H/S segment.

The film also stars with “The Walking Dead” favorite Chandler Riggs, and Natalie Martinez (“Kingdom”), Saw and Insidious‘ Leigh Whannell, and Ioan Gruffudd (The Fantastic Four).

“A family imprisoned by intruders is forced to play a terrifying game of “Kill, Or Be Killed”. As the night unfolds, the game’s mysterious rules become clear, and the family realizes their nightmare is being streamed live to riveted viewers all over the world, who are compelled to keep watching…not knowing if what they’re seeing is real, or staged.”

Alex Heineman, Andrew Rona, Nicholas Chartier, and Craig J. Flores produce the film penned by Joseph Dembner.

NEON indeed landed Assassination Nation, but they have a partner in what is the first eight-figure deal of the Sundance Film Festival, Deadline is reporting.

NEON acquired the picture with AGBO for north of $10 million for worldwide rights, and a wide release commitment. AGBO is the new progressive production company launched by Joe and Anthony Russo.

In Sam Levinson‘s film:

“This is a thousand percent a true story about how the quiet, all-American town of Salem, absolutely lost its mind.”

“It tells the story of what happens when a social media-savvy high school senior and her friends observe the results of what happens when a provocateur starts posting details from the private digital lives of everyone in their small town — it turns the town upside down. Browser histories, direct messages, illegal downloads, secret text chains, and worse. It creates a worst-case scenario of what is possible in the digital age.”

The film stars Odessa Young, Suki Waterhouse, Hari Nef, Abra, Bill Skarsgard, Bella Thorne, Colman Domingo, Joel McHale, and Aniki Noni Rose.

Producers are David Goyer, Anita Gou, Kevin Turen, Aaron L. Gilbert, Matthew J. Malek and Manu Gargi.

Netflix has given you two options this past Friday the 13th, and your best bet is to watch David Fincher’s incredible “Mindhunter” series over McG‘s absurd slasher The Babysitter.

Originally a New Line Cinema production, The Babysitter follows Cole (Judah Lewis), who is madly in love with his babysitter Bee (Samara Weaving). She’s cool and awesome in all the ways Cole is not. One evening while Bee is babysitting, Cole witnesses the unthinkable. Now he must survive a night full of first kisses, first broken hearts, and first encounters with homicidal maniacs (played by Bella Thorne, Andrew Bachelor, Robbie Amell, and Hana Mae Lee). –Netflix

This on-the-nose coming-of-age slasher is a buffet of gore that’s plagued by an inconsistent tone. Always trying too hard to be hip and cool (boasting a ridiculous soundtrack that would make a ’90s horror film jealous), McG turns Brian Duffield‘s Blacklist screenplay into a bad dad joke (with handjobs and all) that’s in the middle of a midlife crisis. It’s a bummer, too, because the chemistry between Lewis and Weaving in the first half of the film is dynamite.

Speaking of, Weaving’s performance dominates the first half of the film (she also steals the show in Joe Lynch’s Mayhem). She’s transcendent and could carry any film on her shoulders…only McG instead opts to turn the camera towards her unbearable knucklehead “Scooby-Doo” friends who bloat the second half of the film with a tiresome game of cat-and-mouse that’s dreadfully boring.

Even worse, The Babysitter looks like shit. McG comes from a music video background and that’s exactly what is on the screen – everything looks stage-y, with the empty streets lit up like a studio backlot where they would film “Desperate Housewives”.

The Babysitter also fails to deliver on its promise: the babysitter is somehow in possession of the book of the devil and it’s never used. In fact, you could completely remove the cult/satanic subplot from the film and nothing would change. Taking that one step further, removing everyone but the babysitter and child would have made for a way more entertaining movie.

As confused and sloppy as The Babysitter is, at least it’s astonishingly bloody. If anything, it’s a good primer for the far superior Better Watch Out, out now through Well Go USA.
