Six years ago, following the lack of recognition at the Oscars for horror films, Trace Thurman and I created “The Hereditaries“ (named after Toni Collette’s Hereditary omission), a series of horror awards to acknowledge all of the great work being done in the genre.

We’re now up to the sixth annual Hereditaries (click here to vote), which celebrates the amazing diversity of horror films released in 2025.

Unlike the 2024 Hereditaries when The Substance obliterated the pack (hear who won here), there are two clear frontrunners this year: Sinners and Weapons (11 nominations each).

Proving how robust 2025 was, however, there are multiple other films nipping at their heels: The Long Walk sped off with eight nominations, while Bring Her Back, 28 Years Later, Companion, and Final Destination Bloodlines all managed six.

Perhaps most surprising (or is it encouraging?) was the strength of gems like Canadian sequel Influencers and European co-production The Ugly Stepsister (six nominations each), as well as Alison Brie & Dave Franco’s underrated Together (five nominations) and HBO Max’s delightful queer horror comedy The Parenting (four nominations).

Here’s what you’re voting on:

  • Best Mainstream Release
  • Best Indie Release
  • Best Under The Radar Film
  • Best Foreign/Non-English Language Horror Film
  • Best Horror TV Show
  • Best Queer Horror
  • Best Score
  • Best House Porn – New for 2025
  • Best First Feature
  • Best Director
  • Best Lead Performance
  • Best Supporting Performance
  • Break Out Performance
  • Best Duo
  • Best Ensemble
  • Best Make Up/Creature Design FX
  • Best Stephen King adaptation – New for 2025
  • Best Villain
  • Best Sequence
  • Best Non-Fatal Injury
  • Best Ending
  • Best Death

Context: The 22 categories were informed by Horror Queers Patrons, then narrowed down by Trace and I. In order to be eligible, films had to be widely available this year (either theatrically, VOD or on streaming services), which sadly means no festival exclusives.

Categories are capped at a maximum of 10 nominees and films are only eligible once per category (with two notable exceptions this year: Supporting Performance for Sinners and Non-Fatal Injury for Bring Her Back). This inevitably means that some favourites have been left out, but this is best way to ensure a tight race. Kill your darlings, folks!

Finally, we’ve also added spoiler warnings for the last four categories, just in case you haven’t seen films like Bone Lake, Influencers, or Dangerous Animals.

Click here to vote before the deadline on Friday, Jan 16 2026 at 11:59pm EST.

Winners will be announced on Horror Queers social media accounts (Instagram, BlueSky and Discord), as well as a special Main Feed bonus episode in February 2026.

*Keep up with our 2025 end of the year coverage here*

There’s a longstanding rule in horror movies: don’t put kids and pets in danger. Of all who succumb to the genre’s various chills and thrills, the most vulnerable of us are supposed to be safe. But 2025 saw a record number of films and TV series buck this taboo in extreme and brutal stories that left us shaken to the core. Fortunately, a bright young crop of new performers rose to the occasion, previewing an exciting future for horror to come.

Whether running from zombies and serial killers, battling sinister foster mothers, or matching wits with interdimensional monsters, horror’s newest stars stole the spotlight and proved that the genre kids are still alright.

Christian Convery – The Monkey and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein

Horror fans last saw Christian Convery frantically climbing a tree to evade a rampaging beast in the 2023 film Cocaine Bear, but in 2025 we watched the veteran child actor level up with prominent roles in two of the year’s most exciting films. In February, Convery wowed audiences as Hal and Bill, twin brothers tormented by an evil windup toy in Osgood Perkins’ grisly horror comedy The Monkey. Desperate to connect with their long-lost father, the brothers discover that each time they activate the sinister simian, its drumsticks unleash a wave of shocking death.

November would see Convery move to the opposite end of the genre spectrum as a young Victor Frankenstein in Guillermo del Toro’s reimagining of Mary Shelley’s classic novel. Years before attempting to reconstruct a man using the assembled flesh of recovered corpses, Victor is a young medical student tormented by an abusive father who may have caused his mother’s death. Del Toro dramatically builds out the hubristic villain’s early years, reminding us that the famously mad scientist was once a frightened child desperate to reverse this devastating loss. Though different in nearly every way, both stories explore the horror of parental death and the long shadow cast by this unique trauma.

Convery more than met the challenge presented by these wildly different roles, cementing his place as a leader in the new generation of horror stars.

Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, and Jonah Wren Phillips – Bring Her Back

One of the year’s most upsetting movies shocked audiences by threatening already vulnerable children with unthinkable harm. Bring Her Back follows a newly orphaned teen named Andy (Billy Barratt) who struggles to protect his visually impaired half-sister Piper (Sora Wong) in the months leading up to his eighteenth birthday, when he’ll be able to serve as her legal guardian. Their foster mother, Laura (Sally Hawkins), dotes on the girl, going out of her way to meet Piper’s special needs. But she clearly wants Andy out of her house, and Oliver, her other foster child, is strangely silent and disturbed.

Danny and Michael Philippou follow their 2022 hit Talk to Me with this similarly brutal story that steadfastly refuses to pull any punches. Barratt leads the young cast as a traumatized teen overwhelmed with adult responsibility, while Wong is equally endearing as a vulnerable child walking into grave danger. But Phillips steals the show as the strangely sinister yet sympathetic Oliver, who engages in jaw-dropping acts of gruesome self-harm. A heartbreaking ending causes us to question our understanding of caregiving through grief and the power adults hold over young lives.

Hassie Harrison – Dangerous Animals

Every decade, director Sean Byrne returns to horror with a gorgeous yet eviscerating film centered around a complex female character. His 2025 entry, Dangerous Animals, is the gut-churning story of a charismatic serial killer who uses nature as a deadly weapon. Shark expert Bruce Tucker (Jai Courtney) offers cage diving excursions in the waters off Australia’s beautiful Gold Coast. But his true passion lies in using the powerful fish to murder unsuspecting tourists, then artfully capturing their moments of death on his vintage camcorder.

Fortunately, his latest target, Zephyr (Hassie Harrison), is a strong-willed drifter who will stop at nothing to stay alive. Byrne’s harrowing film sees her not only fight back against this sadistic serial killer, but stare down a massive great white shark and bite off her own thumb to escape captivity. We watch her bravely confront a series of unimaginable scenarios and repeatedly find help just out of reach. The oldest actor on this list, Harrison, embodies the spirit of carefree youth mixed with an unflinching determination to survive.

Alfie Williams – 28 Years Later

When the original 28 Days Later first hit theaters in 2002, the franchise’s newest star wasn’t a glint in his parents’ eye. British newcomer Alfie Williams made an impressive feature film debut in 28 Years Later, the long-awaited third installment of Danny Boyle’s genre-defining zombie series.

Decades after the Rage virus had decimated the British Isles, survivors have been indefinitely quarantined and essentially left to fend for themselves. Spike (Williams) has been raised in a primitive village on Lindisfarne, a coastal island protected from the roaming infected by a landbridge only accessible at low tide. The film begins with a coming-of-age trip beyond the heavily fortified gates as Jaime (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) introduces his son to the ravaged UK. But this deadly expedition opens Spike’s eyes to possibilities his father has long since abandoned. Williams carries this emotional film with startling vulnerability, providing a vessel through which we channel our own rage at the vicious reality we’ve inherited.

The first of a planned trilogy, Boyle and writer Alex Garland leave us on a harrowing note as Spike meets another, more dangerous child of the apocalypse. Nia DaCosta’s upcoming sequel teases a rocky road for the young protagonist tasked with finding himself in a shattered world.

Indy – Good Boy

Arguably, the year’s most surprising performance came from one of the best boys in recent memory. Indy, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, stars in Ben Leonberg’s Good Boy, a haunted house story told from the perspective of the family dog.

Recovering from chronic lung disease, Todd, played by Leonberg but voiced by Shane Jensen, has moved to his late grandfather’s abandoned house with only Indy by his side. Determined to protect his human companion, this loveable pet begins to sense that something is not right in the crumbling home. Sinister shadows emerge from the walls, and Todd seems strangely drawn to the basement. Leonberg’s story unfolds in a series of vague yet terrifying interludes viewed exclusively from Indy’s limited perspective. However, this lack of concrete information creates a sense of terrifying helplessness as we watch Indy struggle to communicate the danger he senses.

The astonishingly emotive canine performer manages to pull us into his limited world and an unwavering desire to protect his best friend. Only time will tell if this endearing dog will lead another horror film, but Indy’s surprising star turn will go down in history as one of the genre’s most exciting moments.

Arian S. Cartaya – It: Welcome to Derry

We knew that with Bill Skarsgård onboard, Andy Muschietti’s It: Welcome to Derry would have no problem recreating the terror of Stephen King’s 1986 novel It. But with a story set one generation before his crowd-pleasing 2017 adaptation, would he be able to recapture the magic of the Losers’ Club?

Muschietti’s It succeeds largely thanks to the chemistry of its young cast, who bring some of King’s most popular characters to life. But success can often be a double-edged sword, and the 2017 Losers’ Club left fourteen giant shoes to fill. After a blood-soaked bait and switch in episode 1, It: Welcome to Derry introduces a stellar cast of likeable kids again tasked with battling the shapeshifting monster. Yet amidst this new batch of self-professed “freaks,” one stands out from the crowd.

Arian S. Cartaya won our hearts as Rich, a diminutive charmer willing to sacrifice his life to save his friends. We watch the lovesick tween console and care for his crush in the wake of a grisly eye injury, explain the details of a graveyard ritual, and dazzle an adult crowd with his mad drumming skills. Without spoiling the events of this tear-jerker season, Rich adds emotional depth to a spectacular story willing to kill beloved characters. A shocking reveal in the season finale brings Rich’s story full circle while reframing his place in the long line of Derry’s bravest children.

Nell Fisher and Jake Connelly – Stranger Things

Stranger Things has always been a show about tweens battling larger-than-life monsters. Also referencing the novels of Stephen King, the Netflix juggernaut begins with a group of intrepid kids on bikes squaring off against an otherworldly foe. But nearly ten years after its inaugural season, the original Party is growing up and becoming adult warriors in their own right.

Season 5 sees creators Matt and Ross Duffer inject youth into this sprawling story with a surprising duo of unlikely heroes. We first met the youngest Wheeler sibling as a toddler on her mother’s hip. Now a headstrong tween herself, we watch as Holly (Nell Fisher) is literally pulled into the ongoing battle against Henry/Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). Along the way, she forms an uneasy alliance with a brutish classman known as Dipshit Derek (Jake Connelly), who transforms into a likable protagonist before our eyes. Fisher and Connelly add life to the long-running series, helming some of the season’s most memorable moments. From making a “your mom” joke in Vecna’s face to traversing a series of traumatic memories, Holly and Derek prove that the kids are still alright in Hawkins, Indiana.

It’s been an admittedly stressful year with a seemingly endless stream of real-life terrors reflected in narrative cinema. What’s more, the famously tumultuous film industry has been mired in lucrative streaming wars and an unprecedented number of studio mergers. Fortunately, horror returns to save the day with a new generation of scream queens and kings offering hope for the future of genre filmmaking.

*Keep up with our ongoing end of the year coverage here*

Women have always provided the heartbeat of horror. From damsels in distress and long-suffering wives to monstrous mothers and femme fatales, they are inextricable from genre stories, though they’re often reduced to caricatures.

Thankfully, with each passing year, women have won more empowerment both on and off the screen. As feminism continues to evolve, so does our representation in stories of horror that increasingly revolve around the female experience. Though 2025 has felt regressive in many ways, the year has seen a plethora of captivating and diverse female characters filling the screen in horror films.

We’ve gone back to the female source of science fiction while exploring the implications of subservient AI and a host of roles in between. We’ve celebrated the swan songs of beloved characters and explored the bounds of dangerous love while embracing different sources of feminine magic.

In short, it’s been a banner year for women in the horror genre.

Sophie Thatcher – Companion

The year kicked off with an oddly prescient tale of female autonomy and survival. Iris (Sophie Thatcher) is nervous to spend a couple’s weekend at a remote cabin with her boyfriend Josh (Jack Quaid), especially since his friend Kat (Megan Suri) doesn’t seem to like her much. When Kat’s wealthy boyfriend Sergey (Rupert Friend) attempts an act of sexual assault, Iris is forced to slit his throat.

Only in the aftermath of this horrific attack does she learn that she’s not human at all, but a robotic companion programmed to fulfill Josh’s every need. What follows is a violent chase in which Iris struggles to gain control of her system-wide settings while Josh attempts to shut her down. Shocking revelations add context to this futuristic nightmare, and we learn that Iris’s perfect boyfriend may not be as charming as he seems.

Thatcher gives a stellar performance as an empathetic AI system whose personality changes according to her settings. The story is a blood-soaked yet upbeat meditation on female empowerment and the toxic men who confuse love with control.

Wunmi Mosaku and Hailee Steinfeld – Sinners

sinners

Perhaps the year’s most exciting horror film features a host of empowered female characters. Ryan Coogler’s exceptional film introduces us to the entrepreneurial Smokestack Twins (both played by Michael B. Jordan) as they return to their hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi, and prepare to open a juke joint which will feature the talents of their young cousin Sammie (Miles Caton). But as they set to work preparing the venue, both brothers reunite with their long-lost loves.

Stack has abandoned the white-passing Mary (Hailee Steinfeld), hoping to protect her from the Klan, while Smoke is estranged from Annie (Wunmi Mosaku) after the death of their infant daughter. A successful opening night is derailed when a white vampire and his newly turned minions storm the building, hoping to appropriate Sammie’s musical talent. While Smoke and Stack are the film’s protagonists, Mary and Annie form the story’s heart, both employing their unique skills to support their men. Mary takes a dangerous risk when she tries to use her light-skinned appearance to smooth over tensions at the venue’s front door while Annie draws on her rootwork practice to help defeat the vampire threat.

Coogler’s powerful film finds humanity in this forgotten culture, highlighting the power of music as the tie that binds.

Sally Hawkins – Bring Her Back

Danny and Michael Philippou followed their harrowing breakout hit Talk to Me with an equally upsetting and gory film. Seventeen-year-old Andy (Billy Barratt) has been caring for his visually impaired sister Piper (Sora Wong) while their single father undergoes cancer treatment. But his death forces them to enter temporary foster care until Andy is old enough to serve as his sister’s legal guardian.

At first, their foster mother, Laura (Sally Hawkins), seems like the answer to their prayers with a home outfitted to meet Piper’s needs. But she’s strangely hostile towards Andy, and her other foster child, Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips), is eerily silent. Tensions escalate as Sally begins to gaslight Andy, building a narrative about his incompetence, while Oliver engages in disturbing acts of gruesome self-harm. As this devastating story unfolds, we learn that Laura has an unthinkable plan to reverse a traumatic event from her past. The story merges into one of grisly violence and a powerful exploration of unresolved grief.

Hawkins is magnetic in the role, managing to humanize an outwardly monstrous mother.

All of the Women – M3GAN 2.0

The robotic menace returns in a bombastic sequel much different from her 2022 breakout hit. Two years after a violent showdown between M3gan (Amie Donald, Jenna Davis) and her creator Gemma (Allison Williams), a mysterious agency has used her programming to create Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), an evolved prototype designed to serve as a global assassin, then sit motionless until she’s needed again. Having backed her program up in the cloud, M3gan has been lying dormant in Gemma’s Smart Home to keep watch over Cady (Violet McGraw), the child she’s still bonded to.

As Amelia wages a destructive battle for freedom, M3gan and Gemma must rely on each other in order to save the girl they both love. But as caregivers to a growing child, they must also learn to step back and let Cady learn to protect herself. The exciting film pulls from legendary sequels like Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgment Day while dressing its action up in hot pink empowerment. While M3GAN 2.0 premiered to disappointing box office numbers, it’s a fascinating exploration of AI ethics and technology’s corrosive effect on humanity.

Jennifer Love Hewitt – I Know What You Did Last Summer

It was only a matter of time before the legacy sequel trend hit one of the 90s’ most beloved films. Released in response to the surprise success of Scream, the original I Know What You Did Last Summer is a throwback whodunit dressed up in ’90s meta-slasher style. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s newest franchise installment brings the Fisherman killer roaring back to the screen in a poppy sequel that reunites us with one of the genre’s favorite final girls.

Decades after surviving the famously knowledgeable stalker, Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) has left Southport for good and now uses her experiences to teach trauma response at a nearby university. But a similar series of connected deaths brings her back to her hometown and a tense reunion with her ex-husband, Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.). While admittedly messy, this updated chapter provides Julie with long-awaited clarity and empowerment as she’s forced to contend with the root of her pain.

The director also treats us to a brief appearance from fan-favorite scream queen Helen Shivers, played by genre icon Sarah Michelle Gellar, before teasing a future team-up sequel featuring Hewitt and her I Still Know What You Did Last Summer co-star Brandy Norwood.

Alison Brie – Together

Alison Brie and her husband, Dave Franco, once again project their real-life love onto the screen in Michael Shanks’s body horror comedy Together. The couple stars as Millie and Tim, a quasi-engaged pair trying to mend their crumbling relationship without admitting how unhappy they are. After moving out of the city for Millie’s new job, Tim struggles to find himself while grieving the recent loss of his parents. Hoping to reconnect on an afternoon hike, they become lost in a mysterious cave that seems to conceal a dangerous pool. Something in the water ignites a desperate need to be together, and Tim finds himself physically unable to function without Millie nearby.

Even worse, their bodies are dragged toward each other by an unseen force, and physical contact fuses their skin, requiring grisly measures to split them apart. An admittedly bonkers conclusion ties a cheeky Spice Girls song into the film’s warnings about unexamined codependency and the dangers of all-consuming love.

Amy Madigan and Julia Garner – Weapons

Perhaps the year’s most surprising genre moment was Amy Madigan‘s villainous turn in Zach Cregger’s jaw-dropping Weapons. The twisting story begins when Justine (Julia Garner) arrives at school one day to find a single student in her class. The rest have disappeared without a trace, and as a new teacher, she finds herself the town’s prime suspect.

As this mystery unravels in parallel narratives, we learn that the woman accused of witchcraft is not the story’s true sorceress. By following her only remaining student, Justine discovers a much more sinister creature operating from within his house. A skilled witch, Gladys (Madigan), uses grounded spells to captivate her intended victims and operate them like human weapons. Both stunning and visceral, Cregger’s thrilling film features a strong protagonist in Justine while delivering a female villain for the ages.

Vera Farmiga – The Conjuring: Last Rites

One of horror’s most successful franchises ended this year with a surprisingly emotional final chapter. Despite what we know about the real-life figure she’s portraying, Vera Farmiga once again dazzles as the cinematic clairvoyant Lorraine Warren, who battles demons alongside her beloved husband Ed (Patrick Wilson). Michael Chaves‘s The Conjuring: Last Rites takes us back to the beginning as the couple shies away from a terrifying case and a cursed mirror that seems to mark Lorraine and her unborn child.

Decades later, the now-famous couple is eyeing retirement and preparing for their daughter’s wedding when the mirror and its demons reappear in their lives. This symbolic passing of the torch says goodbye to a cinematic couple whose story has changed the landscape of horror. The Conjuring: Last Rites is both a terrifying haunted house story and a touching reminder to teach our children to empower themselves. Though it’s goodbye for now, an upcoming series for HBO may soon bring Lorraine Warren back to the screen.

Elle Fanning in Predator: Badlands

(L-R) Elle Fanning as Tessa and Ella Fanning as Thia in 20th Century Studios’ PREDATOR: BADLANDS film. Photo courtesy of 20th Century Studios. © 2025 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

Of all the things to expect in a new installment of the Predator franchise, a female android from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation was not high on the list. Director Dan Trachtenberg follows his 2022 hit Prey with a creative approach to franchise lore. Elle Fanning stars as Thia, a damaged Weyland-Yutani synthetic lost on the dangerous planet Denna.

With limited options, she connects with a Yautja warrior named Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), who’s also been sent to hunt the Kalisk, a dangerous apex predator. What begins as a relationship built on mutual survival blossoms into a trusting bond that defies species classification. Fanning also gets a villainous turn as Tessa, Thia’s manipulative “sister,” determined to fulfill her corporate objectives.

As the third prominent female AI character of the year, Fanning’s dual roles solidify the trend of using subservient AI as a metaphor for feminist empowerment in the face of systemic patriarchy. With the continued proliferation of invasive tech, it’s an archetype we’re likely to see more of in the coming years.

Mia Goth in Frankenstein

FRANKENSTEIN. Mia Goth as Elizabeth in Frankenstein. Cr. Ken Woroner/Netflix © 2025.

One of the most anticipated horror adaptations of the year was drawn from the pen of a legendary female author. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is the story of a troubled man who destroys the lives of everyone he loves in an attempt to replicate women’s life-giving power. Guillermo del Toro brings this beloved novel to life in a new reimagining that sharpens Shelley’s original themes. His Victor (Oscar Isaac) is a hubristic monster, and his Creature (Jacob Elordi) a sensitive child desperate for a father’s love.

Del Toro adds a feminist edge to his updated story with an empowered Elizabeth (Mia Goth) reminiscent of Shelley herself. Much more than a damsel in distress, Goth’s Elizabeth is both intellectual and empathetic, challenging Victor’s audacious theories while inadvertently providing the key to his monstrous creation. Rather than terror, her connection with the Creature sparks yearning for unquestioned love and acceptance, while her stunning costumes make us long for our own gothic romance. Goth also disappears into the role of Victor’s doomed mother, whose death in childbirth sparks his deadly obsession, positioning women as the driving force of this foundational story.

From empowered AI creations and women determined to save their partners, scientists and scholars guiding the next generation, to villainous witches using magic to exert their will, this year has seen a fantastic roster of disparate women taking the horror world by storm.

A24’s Bring Her Back, the second movie from Talk to Me directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou, is heading to streaming just in time for the Halloween season.

The grim horror movie debuts on HBO Max on October 3, with a linear premiere on October 4 at 8PM ET.

In the psychological horror film, a brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.

Danny & Michael Philippou direct from a script by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman.

Sally Hawkins, Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, Sally-Anne Upton, Stephen Phillips, and Mischa Heywood star.

I wrote in my review, “It’s impressively bold and shocking in the way the directors continue to push horror boundaries and shatter taboos, especially when it comes to kids, ensuring a nail-biting and grueling experience that’ll leave you wincing and squirming in your seat. But it’s so utterly soul crushing in its unwavering darkness that it’s hard to imagine anything coming close to beating it for the mantle of feel bad horror of the year.”

Bring Her Back also received a Blu-ray release last month, and A24 teased “something sinister hidden in the Bring Her Back menu for those who dare to dig.”

If you missed this grim horror movie in theaters or on physical media, tune in next month for Bring Her Back‘s streaming debut.

One of the best horror movies of this year so far, Danny and Michael Philippou’s Bring Her Back didn’t end up making as much of a splash as their debut feature, Talk to Me. While Talk to Me scared up $91 million at the box office just two years ago, Bring Her Back only managed a mere $22 million despite positive reviews and seemingly everything working in its favor.

But perhaps the horror film will find more of an audience on home video…

Bring Her Back is now available on Digital outlets at home, and you can also pre-order the 4K & Blu-ray through A24’s online shop today. The discs are expected to ship out in August.

In a tweet over the weekend, A24 teased that the menu screen on the physical release will include a “sinister” surprise. A24 tweets, “something sinister hidden in the Bring Her Back menu for those who dare to dig.” Check out an image below for a sneak peek at the menu.

Pre-order your copy of Bring Her Back on 4K or Blu-ray from A24 now. Special features include a commentary with the directors, one deleted scene, and an in-depth making-of featurette, plus six collectible postcards with behind the scenes photography by Ingvar Kenne.

It’s the 4th of July and the Jurassic World franchise has stomped its way back into theaters, but that’s not the only new movie hoping to keep you company over the long weekend.

Here’s all the new horror that released from June 30 – July 4, 2025!

For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.

The second movie from Talk to Me directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou, Bring Her Back is now available on Premium VOD for rent ($19.99) or purchase ($24.99) via A24.

Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) stars. In the film, “A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.”

Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, Sally-Anne Upton, Stephen Phillips, and Mischa Heywood also star in the film directed by Danny Philippou & Michael Philippou.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “It’s impressively bold and shocking in the way the directors continue to push horror boundaries and shatter taboos, especially when it comes to kids, ensuring a nail-biting and grueling experience that’ll leave you wincing and squirming in your seat. But it’s so utterly soul crushing in its unwavering darkness that it’s hard to imagine anything coming close to beating it for the mantle of feel bad horror of the year.”

The Twin

Writer/Director J.C. Doler’s directorial debut, the Irish folklore horror film The Twin was released onto VOD outlets this past Tuesday by Vertical. Check out the trailer below.

The movie stars Logan Donovan (Colony, Magnum P.I.), Robert Longstreet (Midnight Mass, Fall of the House of Usher), and Aleksa Palladino (The Irishman, The Penguin).

The film’s synopsis: “After the tragic loss of his son, Nicholas (Donovan) struggles with his grief and a strained relationship with his wife Charlie (Palladino). Under the watch of psychiatrist Dr. Beaumont (Longstreet), Nicholas begins experiencing terrifying visions of a shadowy figure that looks like himself. As reality unravels, Nicholas must confront his past and the supernatural force haunting him before it consumes him completely.”

J.C. Doler co-wrote the screenplay along with Paul Petersen, based on a story by Doler, Taylor Bracewell, and Chris Alan Evans. The indie horror film, previously titled The Fetch, was the winner of Best Screenplay at the 2021 Screamfest. The Twin had world premiered at the 2024 Austin Film Festival and won the Audience Award for Dark Matters Feature.

You’ve heard the story, but never like this. Enter the shadowed world of public domain horror movie The Death of Snow White on Digital today via The Horror Collective.

The twisted reimagining of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale stars Sanae Loutsis (Rose Blood: A Friday the 13th Fan Film) and Chelsea Edmundson (Army of the Dead).

Pursued by her stepmother for eternal beauty, Snow White flees into a terrifying forest and aligns with seven bloodthirsty dwarfs — cold-blooded assassins with a knack for brutal killings.

Jason Brooks (Friday the 13th Vengeance 2: Bloodlines) directs from a script he co-wrote with special effects makeup artist Naomi Mechem-Miller.

Tristan Nokes, Meredith Binder, Risa Mei, Jeremy Hallam, Ali Chapman, Colin Miller, Dillon Moore, Michael De Santo II, and Eric Pope round out the cast.

Jurassic World Rebirth t-rex

The seventh installment in the multi-billion dollar blockbuster franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth starring Scarlett Johansson is now playing in movie theaters nationwide.

Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) directs a script by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, based on characters created by Michael Crichton.

Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived.

The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.

Scarlett Johansson stars as skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery.

Great White Waters

Cocaine incites a shark feeding frenzy in Great White Waters, a new Tubi original from the director of Sharknado that swam onto the free-streaming platform beginning today, July 4.

The film’s official synopsis reads, “When millions in cartel cocaine go missing off Florida’s coast, the search turns savage as vicious sharks close in on anyone daring to claim the stash.”

Angela Cole, Johnny Ramey, Steve Hanks, Ashton Leigh, and Hector Becerra star. Director Anthony C. Ferrante co-wrote the screenplay with Geoff Mead.

This marks the second team-up between Tubi and Ferrante when it comes to sharks; Ferrante stranded a couple with sharks in the 2022 Tubi original Blind Waters. Ferrante is also behind the first five Sharknado films, so he’s well versed in campy shark horror.

sinners black american sign language

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has made its streaming debut on HBO Max for the 4th of July, and Max is streaming the Black American Sign Language (BASL) version of Sinners alongside the original version of the film. Max notes in a press release, “This groundbreaking release marks the first time a streaming platform will exclusively debut a film interpreted in BASL.”

“The release of Sinners with BASL is a major step forward in accessibility, representation, and visibility in streaming,” Max explains. “BASL is a distinct dialect of American Sign Language (ASL) with its own dynamic history and unique grammar, signing space, rhythm, facial expressions, and cultural nuances. For the first time, the Black Deaf community will have streaming access to a more immersive experience in their language. Max subscribers, who sign in ASL but are unfamiliar with this dialect, will also be able to follow along with this interpretation.

“Sinners with BASL is interpreted by Nakia Smith, an influential voice in the Black Deaf community, who delivers a powerful interpretation with cultural depth and linguistic richness that aligns with the film’s themes and historical timeline. Rosa Lee Timm, Director of Artistic Sign Language, is a renowned performance artist and uses her expertise in sign language performance and visual storytelling to ensure cultural authenticity.”

“Accessibility within streaming is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Our goal at Max is to make these great stories accessible to all audiences in a way that is authentic to the content and the communities we serve,” said Naomi Waibel, SVP of Global Product Management at Warner Bros. Discovery. “Sinners with Black American Sign Language is an example of how culturally nuanced access can enrich the viewing experience for our audiences.”

“With ASL” titles, including Sinners, will be displayed on the Max app and indicated with key art featuring the sign language symbol. Look for both versions of the film on the 4th of July.

Written and directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed), the critically acclaimed vampire horror film stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers Smoke and Stack.

Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, they return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

It’s that time again; we’ve reached the halfway point of the year. What a strange year it’s been so far, with the box office making it clear that audiences aren’t willing to venture out for anything and everything these days. With wallets tightening, it’s event films that are proving to be the biggest draw – the zeitgeist releases that get everyone talking.

For 2025, so far, that means that only a few horror movies have reached massive, runaway box office success. The Final Destination franchise sprung back to life with Final Destination Bloodlines, giving Tony Todd a heartwarming and proper send-off with a touching final appearance and an impressive franchise milestone: it’s the first to reach a $200 million. As impressive as its theatrical run has been, Ryan Coogler’s vampire epic Sinners smashed box office records, outpacing Bloodlines and earning horror a historic first ‘A’ Cinemascore.

Even the seeming misses aren’t too terrible, considering horror’s high margins nature. M3GAN 2.0, Wolf Man, and Until Dawn, for example, didn’t exactly set the box office on fire, but modest budgets and home video/streaming returns showcase horror’s ability to thrive regardless. While it means that predicting box office success is getting even trickier, horror’s dominance continues.

And this summer’s only getting warmed up for horror releases, with some of the year’s most anticipated titles on the immediate horizon. I Know What You Did Last Summer, Together, and Weapons are just around the corner, with The Toxic Avenger soon to follow. Beyond that? Expect an insanely packed Halloween season ahead.

As a refresher and to ensure great movies don’t fall through the cracks, here are the ten best horror movies released in the first half of 2025.

Bring Her Back

Bring Her Back

Danny and Michael Philippou’s follow-up feature to Talk to Me is a downer of the highest order. The filmmaking duo’s brand of grief horror is as visceral and brutal as you’d expect but without any tangible semblance of hope. Sally Hawkins delivers a riveting, powerful performance as Laura, the cunning yet broken-hearted woman desperate to bring back her deceased daughter at any cost. While that involves demonic activity, the true monster here is grief and its shocking ability to erode a once-kind soul. Bring Her Back is a more refined effort from the Philippous, but it’s also more restrictive and simple. It’s impressively bold and shocking in the way the directors continue to push horror boundaries and shatter taboos, especially when it comes to kids, ensuring a nail-biting and grueling experience that’ll leave you wincing and squirming in your seat.

Sister Midnight

Sister Midnight

In truth, writer/director Karan Kandhari’s energetic, infectious feature debut leans more into magical realism than horror. But it’s such a stylish genre-bender with a winsome and comically put-upon protagonist that it feels tailor-made for the adventurous horror cinephile. Radhika Apte stars as Uma, a young woman horrified to find herself transformed into a disturbing and ruthless figure after entering into an arranged marriage. What begins as a domestic comedy, with Uma begrudgingly navigating her new housewife role, slowly unfurls into an unexpected journey involving stop motion, zany night encounters, and vampirism. It’s unpredictable and vibrant, with Karan Kandhari embracing the absurdity of Uma’s plight with a wry wink and endless panache.

Presence

Presence Chloe Sense Entity

Unsane director Steven Soderbergh reunites with Kimi screenwriter David Koepp (Jurassic World Rebirth) to give an innovative new spin on the quintessential ghost story. Presence frames its haunted events entirely from the perspective of its ghost, but using the camera’s gaze as the ghost’s observing eyes isn’t the only trick up Soderbergh and Koepp’s sleeves. The presence itself may not be something to fear, but that doesn’t mean Presence lacks any intensity or horror. The moody story builds into a thrilling finale that devastates, subverting expectations around the spectral entity haunting a family of four. Soderbergh, working as cinematographer under pseudonym Peter Andrews, wields the camera in breathtaking ways that infuse the incorporeal character with personality. It’s breathtaking in style and form, but it’s the reveal of the actual threat that haunts.

A Desert

A Desert Review - A Desert trailer and poster reveal

Director Joshua Erkman’s feature debut presents a captivating and stylized blend of neo-noir and horror via a road trip through the American Southwest. A photographer (Green Room’s Kai Lennox) sets out to revive his career by capturing abandoned roadside structures and buildings in desolate stretches of the Southwestern desert, but instead finds himself caught in a strange, tangled web. Erkman, who co-wrote the screenplay with Bossi Baker, hangs this genre-bender on the familiar framework of neo-noir. Themes of isolation, alienation, and paranoia saturate the frame and its characters. The debut filmmaker juxtaposes a landscape abandoned and eroded by time with larger-than-life characters, nearly all of them operating in shades of moral decay or corruption. It makes for a deeply engaging journey, one that continues to signal alarm bells from the moment Alex meets Renny right through its bleak final act.

Heart Eyes

Heart Eyes Review

Director Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within, Scare Me), working from a script by Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard) and Christopher Landon (Drop, Freaky) & Michael Kennedy (Freaky), gives romance and horror equal weight in this seamless fusion of slasher and romcom, ensuring that the gore hits just as hard as the sizzling hot chemistry between leads Olivia Holt and Mason Gooding. Heart Eyes walks the fine line between a ’90s slasher with a modern savage edge and a romcom with rare, white-hot chemistry without ever feeling gimmicky. It’s simply a breathlessly entertaining ride that leaves you cheering for love and creative kills in equal measure. It’s not the steadfast commitment to intense thrills and suspenseful set pieces that earns easy rooting interest in Heart Eyes, though that certainly helps, but rather its magnetic cast.

Dead Talents Society

Dead Talents Society

Detention director John Hsu shifts gears from scares to cheers for the endlessly charming horror-comedy Dead Talents Society, which feels like a better answer to Beetlejuice than its recent sequel. It follows the timid and recently deceased Rookie (Gingle Wang) as she tries to navigate life as a ghost. That means learning how to scare the pants off of people before fading away permanently in an afterlife where ghosts strive to become the spookiest urban legends and famous stars in the underworld. And competition is fierce. The Rookie teams with tenured diva Catherine (Sandrine Pinna) to do so, but Catherine has her hands full with her gentle mentee. Hsu, who co-wrote the script with Vincent Tsai, lovingly pokes fun at supernatural tropes without ever losing a sense of heart or horror. It’s a comedy where the characters are endearing and the jokes land, but it’s also surprisingly bloody and, occasionally, spooky. The competition is fierce in the afterlife, yielding one of the year’s biggest crowd-pleasers that’s sadly slipped under the radar. Run to Netflix and watch this gem asap.

28 Years Later

28 Years Later

Director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland return to the world they created in 28 Days Later with a polarizing start to a new planned trilogy. Instead of venturing down the expected path, Boyle & Garland introduce a quarantined UK largely forgotten by the outside world, with its survivors having forged new communities and simplified ways of life post-outbreak. The infected are merely part of the equation in newcomer Spike’s (Alfie Williams) coming-of-age story that touches on everything from Brexit to the inevitability of death. Boyle plays with form, introducing a sensory assault through rapid cuts, a punishing soundscape, and immersive camerawork that employs a variety of techniques, including strapping cameras and iPhones to actors to evoke danger and suspense. Yet it’s the surprising third act, pivoting from intense horror to a cathartic, poignant meditation on death, along with an insane hook for the second installment, that proves most divisive. That Boyle and Garland are so willing to take drastic risks like this makes 28 Years Later one of the most exciting releases of the year so far; any movie that inspires passionate debate and analysis like this is ultimately a win for the horror genre.

The Ugly Stepsister

The Ugly Stepsister

Norwegian writer and director Emilie Blichfeldt harkens back to the bloody Brothers Grimm origins of Cinderella for her feature debut.  Instead of whimsical romance set in the Renaissance, Blichfeldt gets graphic with the medieval torture women endure in their pursuit of happily ever after. In Blichfeldt’s version, the little ash girl is Agnes (Thea Sofie Loch Naess), but the familiar fairy tale is framed from the perspective of stepsister and romantic rival Elvira (Lea Myren). It’s not just the dedication to the gory transformation that impresses, but the way Blichfeldt adds dimension and new layers to these classic characters. The only true villain here is the society that demands impossible standards and casts aside those who don’t meet them. The production design is stunning and immersive, creating an almost ethereal backdrop to a grim, gory body horror tale, and the characters are wonderfully nuanced and authentic. It’s elegant, stylish, and gnarly. But maybe don’t go in with an empty stomach; the film’s final burst of prolonged body horror might make you lose your lunch.

Dangerous Animals

Hassie Harrison and Jai Courtney face off in Dangerous Animals

In an increasingly overcrowded sea of shark horror movies, leave it to the director of The Loved Ones and The Devil’s Candy, Sean Byrne, to give the well-trodden subgenre a welcome shakeup with a potentially game-changing entry. Here, cinema’s favorite ocean predators aren’t the villains but merely the modus operandi of one sadistic and charismatic serial killer. Jai Courtney delivers an electric, career-defining performance as Captain Tucker, a disarming and gregarious behemoth of a man who lives in and operates a shark diving tour boat. For Tucker, it’s less about a source of income and more about luring prey for his true passion: feeding his tortured prey to the sharks he attracts with buckets of chum. The propulsive blend of serial killer thrills and aquatic terror makes for a high-stakes ride that leaves you breathless. This is the type of filmmaker who makes his characters earn their survival, if they can, by plunging them into a grim gauntlet of pain and suffering. The ones who make it come away battered and scarred, but never without hope.

Sinners

Sinners Review

Music is a conduit in Sinners, making for an electric, lively first horror effort from Ryan Coogler. Opening text establishes the horror that won’t arrive until much later, revealing that, rarely, a musician comes along with talent so great that their music can pierce the veil between the living and the dead. That it can be a beacon for evil. That’s exactly what happens, of course, but it’s merely one component of Coogler’s engrossing epic that’s so ambitious in form and scale that it firmly holds you in its grip from the outset and never lets go. Sinners is the type of movie that will explore grief with heartbreaking emotion in one breath and feature a swirling Irish vampire jig in the next. It’s this type of cross-pollination between prestige cinema and blockbuster-style entertainment that makes Coogler’s latest feel innovative and daring. The style, ensemble cast, rich world-building, and, of course, the music all make for one of the most epic features of the year.

Bring Her Back star Sally Hawkins talks with filmmakers Danny & Michael Philippou (Talk to Me) about the freeing process of making the movie in the featurette below.

“The commitment to the film and to the story is what it’s all about, and it’s so exciting to be part of that kind of filmmaking — for everyone,” Hawkins comments.

The psychological horror film is in theaters now from A24.

Hawkins stars as a woman whose new foster children uncover a terrifying ritual at her secluded home.

Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, Sally-Anne Upton, and Stephen Phillips round our the cast.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “The film belongs to Sally Hawkins; Laura’s calculated cunning is as infuriating as it is compelling and unpredictable … That Hawkins can also manage to induce sympathy for Laura’s own grief or nearly fall for her display of kindness speaks to her as a performer.”

Sally Hawkins, Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, Sally-Anne Upton, and Stephen Phillips star.

Those wondering how Laura (Sally Hawkins) first discovered the dark ritual that fuels the events of Danny and Michael Philippou’s Bring Her Back, a mysterious new website may have answers for those feeling brave.

Bring Her Back, now playing in theaters, follows a brother and sister subjected to a horrifying nightmare when sent to a foster home after a tragedy. Yet the Philippous never reveal too much about the ritual itself, keeping focus on the heavy emotional toll.

Enter Black Angel Tapes, an eerie darknet-like site that has surfaced and comes laden with warnings.

“Observe. Absorb. Interpret. This is a site of offerings, not instructions. The flow is nonlinear, the clues are embedded, and the path is crooked on purpose. Those who need clear steps aren’t ready.” Users can scour the site for details, artifacts, and unsettling videos, perhaps even submit an offer for a ritual object of their own.

The site also contains further connections that tie Talk to Me and its memorable embalmed hand to the same universe as Bring Her Back.

Black Angel Tapes is suitably bleak and unsettling, a perfect tie-in to the year’s feel-bad horror movie. The site’s FAQ, explaining how dangerous dabbling with the dark arts can be, says it all: “Absolutely. Possession. Madness. Interdimensional bleed. Night visitations. Emotional disintegration. Ecstatic awakening. Every item has its degree of volatility, but the risk is yours. We are not responsible for what wakes up with you.”

As for the film itself, I wrote in my review, “it’s a more refined effort from the Philippous, but it’s also more restrictive and simple. It’s impressively bold and shocking in the way the directors continue to push horror boundaries and shatter taboos, especially when it comes to kids, ensuring a nail-biting and grueling experience that’ll leave you wincing and squirming in your seat. But it’s so utterly soul crushing in its unwavering darkness that it’s hard to imagine anything coming close to beating it for the mantle of feel bad horror of the year.”

Visit the creepy in-world piece that expands the Bring Her Back and Talk to Me universe, if you dare…

Two years after the release of their debut feature Talk to Me, directors Danny and Michael Philippou are back on the big screen with another A24 horror movie, Bring Her Back.

The well-reviewed Bring Her Back opened in the #5 spot on the domestic box office charts over the weekend, scaring up $7 million in 2,449 theaters across the United States.

How does that opening weekend figure compare to Talk to Me‘s debut back in 2023? It’s a tad bit lower, with Talk to Me‘s opening weekend reaching $10.4 million. That movie went on to make $48.2 million in the U.S. and $91.9 million worldwide, a level of box office success that Bring Her Back hopes to match in the coming weeks. Worldwide, it currently sits at $8 million.

Bring Her Back‘s $7 million domestic opening bests the opening weekends of horror films this year including A24’s own films Death of a Unicorn ($5.7 million) and Opus ($1 million), though it’s a touch below films including Until Dawn ($8 million) and Heart Eyes ($8.3 million). This year’s top openings are Final Destination Bloodlines ($51 million) and Sinners ($48 million).

The reported production budget for Bring Her Back is just $15 million, so A24 should have no problem turning a profit on the film in the coming weeks and months. Stay tuned for updates.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “The Philippous’ brand of grief horror is as visceral and brutal as you’d expect based on their feature debut Talk to Me, but without any of the vibrancy or hope. Bring Her Back operates on an unwavering and palpable feeling of dread and anguish from start to end.” She calls it “the feel bad movie of the year.”

Feel bad horror is a strain of cinema that swaps campy fun for corrosive dread, satisfying endings for bleak final beats, and thrilling tension for unsettling situations. They’re films that leave you, not just simply scared, but emotionally run through the ringer. Shocking no one who has seen 2022’s Talk to Me, Danny and Michael Philippou’s brand-new follow-up film, Bring Her Back, doesn’t just dabble in dread and grief, it full-on bathes in it.

In the film, a newly orphaned brother and sister discover a wealth of terrifying secrets hiding within the walls of their new foster mother’s and brother’s home. It’s a narrative so unrelenting in its portrayal of loss and anguish that Meagan Navarro called it “the feel bad horror movie of the year” in her review. This is a world where hope is but a fleeting spark, and every moment feels designed to ratchet up the emotional stakes until there’s nothing left but hollow tension.

Yet for many horror aficionados, an emotionally brutal journey can be unexpectedly cathartic. By exploring the darkest corners of human experience, feel bad horror offers a paradoxical release, allowing viewers to process their anxieties in a safe setting. If you find yourself seeking some films after Bring Her Back that pack a similar emotional gut punch, here are some suggestions to ease the eternal scrolling. These picks stand as prime examples of movies that won’t just scare you, they’ll haunt you long after the credits roll.

Eden Lake (2008)

eden lake

Eden Lake is a movie that wastes no time setting the mood. Directed by James Watkins (Speak No Evil), the film introduces us to Jenny (Kelly Reilly) and Steve (Michael Fassbender) on their way to what they’re hoping will be a tranquil weekend at the lake. Supported by the oh-so-classic drone shots of misty woods and still waters, Watkins establishes a false sense of security while hinting at things to come through a disturbing radio broadcast. But everything shifts when a gang of local teens interrupts the cute couple’s vacay and transforms their idyllic retreat into one of unimaginable terror.

What makes Eden Lake truly hard to watch is its merciless depiction of human cruelty in its rawest form. These aren’t supernatural monsters but teenagers (including Sinners’ own Jack O’Connell) who laugh as they savage innocence, their adolescent bravado twisting into pure, gleeful nihilism. The film’s violence hits with shocking effectiveness, easily bleeding out all hope of a happy ending. And just when you think there might be a sliver of redemption, Eden Lake swerves into some of the bleakest territory modern horror cinema has ever delivered. This is not popcorn horror. Eden Lake is a raw, unrelenting descent that’s nearly impossible to shake once witnessed.

The Last House on the Left (1972)

Taglines for movies can be a bit tricky to get right. Some are laughably hyperbolic, others brilliant, while others feel like little more than a last-minute afterthought. However, in the case of Wes Craven’s The Last House on the Left, every official tagline feels earned. “Can a movie go too far?” “Sights and sounds far beyond anything you’ve tested!” And one of the all-time heavy-hitters, “To avoid fainting keep repeating, IT’S ONLY A MOVIE…ONLY A MOVIE…ONLY A MOVIE…ONLY A MOVIE…ONLY A MOVIE…ONLY A MOVIE…ONLY A MOVIE.”

Feeling less like a polished narrative and more like a raw transmission from the edge of civility, the movie starts innocent enough with two teenagers, Mari and Phyllis, setting out for a concert and some fun. While seeking some recreational marijuana to mix into the festivities, the young women find themselves abducted and absolutely brutalized by a group of genuine miscreants. During all this, Craven treats the camera as a witness, documenting the girls’ mounting fear, the gang’s eerie, predatory grins, and the deafening silence of the woods around them.

But what truly unsettles is the film’s moral vacuum. After the unthinkable happens to Mari and Phyllis, and Mari’s totally normal, middle-class parents find out, they don’t summon a superhero or some secret assassin Uncle to deliver justice. Instead, they become the ones to seek vengeance, inadvertently falling into the same darkness that claimed their daughter. As such, there’s no happy endings here. Instead, Craven leaves us chilled by their grief, ears ringing with the choices these normies can’t unmake, and invites us all to ponder just how thin the line between civility and brutality really is.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007)

When it comes to films of the “watched once, never again” variety, John Erick Dowdle’s The Poughkeepsie Tapes always makes the list. Utilizing a faux-documentary, found-footage veneer, the film follows the investigation of a serial killer who toys with his prey and the police alike. After 800 videotapes are discovered during a police raid, the film spirals into an unsettling journey through hidden-camera horrors that leave no depraved, disturbing, or disgusting stone unturned. Every new tape feels like peeling back another layer of decaying sanity, each more nauseating than the next.

What cements The Poughkeepsie Tapes as an unholy staple of the genre is its clinical, almost scientific dissection of evil. There’s no grand finale, no final girl escape—only an endless loop of terror that worms its way into your nightmares. Here, victims don’t die quietly with strategically placed emotional distance. On the contrary, here you’re forced to witness each gasp for air, every plea, every guttural sob, and disturbing demand. It’s a vision so cold-blooded and relentless that (much like 2023’s Red Rooms) it challenges every fan of true crime to question where the boundary lies between entertainment and outright complicity.

Flowers in the Attic (1987)

Locked away in the dusty confines of their grandparents’ sprawling mansion, the four Dollanganger children—Cathy, Chris, and twins Carrie and Cory—become pawns in a twisted game of family loyalty and survival. Based on the 1979 novel by V.C. Andrews, Flowers in the Attic embraces a rather Gothic horror vibe as it charts the slow erosion of childhood innocence.

Directed by Jeffrey Bloom (Blood Beach), the movie certainly doesn’t shy away from the cruelty enacted by the kids’ Grandma. Although, the real darkness blooms not in a single blood-soaked act but in the small building betrayals. As Cathy and Chris shoulder the impossible weight of caring for their dying, starving siblings, their bond mutates into something tender, taboo, and squirm-inducing. Flowers in the Attic isn’t a story one watches so much as a seeping wound you bear witness to, and certainly will not be for everyone. But then again, isn’t that kind of the M.O. for feel bad horror in general?

The Lodge (2019)

It doesn’t take long (at all) for Severin Fiala and Veronika Franz’s movie The Lodge to bury the bar for fun-and-games horror six feet underground. It stars Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road) as Grace, a new stepmother to Aidan (Jaeden Martell) and Mia (Lia McHugh). When their dad and Grace’s fiancé Richard (Richard Armitage) departs on urgent business, the three relative strangers are left stranded by a brutal blizzard, cut off from the world by ice and howling winds. Before long, creepy noises, flickering lights, mean pranks, and unsettling memories about the cult she grew up in start to influence Grace’s reality.

What makes The Lodge so hard to watch is the unrelenting chill of ambiguity and psychological manipulation swirling around it all. The children’s cruel games mess with Grace’s mind and prey on her trauma and fears. As her reality frays, the film spirals into a waking nightmare of claustrophobia, uncertainty, and freezing atmosphere. Despite not being the most violent, bloody, or brutal flick out there, The Lodge is unsettling nonetheless and reminds us that sometimes the coldest horrors come not from Mother Nature, but from those we’re meant to trust the most.

A24 is back on the big screen with a brand new nightmare this weekend, and that film from the directors of Talk to Me is joined by four fresh new horrors that are now available at home.

Here’s all the new horror that released from May 26 – May 30, 2025!

For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.

In A Hard Place, the monsters that roam the day and creatures that rule the night are separate entities, and they’re both out to kill genre favorites like Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp).

The indie horror-thriller was released onto VOD outlets this past Tuesday.

In the film, “After a botched job leaves a trail of bodies behind, a gang of desperate criminals seeks refuge in a remote desert hideout. But their plans fall apart fast when they discover the area is home to something far worse than the law — an ancient war between monstrous predators of day and night. As tensions rise and the body count climbs, the crew must decide if survival is worth trusting each other or the creatures hunting them.”

Lynn Lowry (Shivers), Rachel Amanda Bryant (M.F.A.), Kevin Caliber (“Future Man”), Ashley Undercuffler (Craving), Glenn Plummer (Saw II), Sadie Katz (Wrong Turn 6), and Bai Ling (The Crow) also star alongside Felissa Rose. J. Horton (Craving) directs the horror film from a script he co-wrote with Michael J. Epstein (Clickbait).

Evil wears a new face in Pretty Boy, a brand new Valentine’s Day-themed sequel to the 2019 indie film Blind. It’s now available on VOD from Lionsgate and Grindstone Entertainment.

Suffering from blindness after a botched laser surgery, actress Faye is abducted from her hillside estate by a masked lunatic named Pretty Boy. He drags her to a nearby home, where several decadent swingers are throwing a retro Valentine’s Day party. As the partiers meet up one by one with Pretty Boy and his machete, Faye awakens and struggles to plot her escape.

Blind director Marcel Walz (Blood Feast) and writer Joe Knetter (Twilight of the Dead) reunite for more bloodshed along with Sarah French as Faye and Jed Rowen as Pretty Boy.

Heather Grace Hancock, Devanny Pinn (Camp Pleasant Lake), Jake Red, Andrew Rohrbach, Sarah Nicklin (Popeye The Slayer Man), Robert Felsted Jr., Fritzi Marth, Ben Stobber, Tyler Gallant, Dave Sheridan (Scary Movie), Robert Rusler (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge), and Maria Olsen (Starry Eyes) round out the cast.

A Desert Review - A Desert trailer and poster reveal

Director Joshua Erkman’s feature debut A Desert blends nihilistic neo-noir and horror, and after a limited theatrical rollout, the film is now available on VOD outlets at home.

In the noir horror thriller, “A past his prime photographer heads out on a road trip across the American Southwest to recapture the magic and success of his previous work. Instead, he finds himself thrust into the dark and chaotic underbelly of America and unwittingly drags his wife and a shady private detective down into this nightmare world with him.”

David Yow (The Toxic Avenger), Kai Lennox (Green Room), Sarah Lind (A Wounded Fawn), Zachary Ray Sherman (“Under the Banner of Heaven”), Ashley B. Smith (Off Ramp, Extremity), Rob Zabrecky (A Ghost Story), and S.A. Griffin (Vegas Vacation) star.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review out of Tribeca Film Fest, “A Desert reaches a fitting conclusion, thematically and tonally, but the steadfast refusal for tidy answers may polarize. Still, the refreshingly unpredictable journey and richly textured worldbuilding establish Erkman as a bold new voice, one that deftly blends genres with stunning precision.”

The big screen summer horror season officially kicks off with A24’s Bring Her Back, the second movie from Talk to Me directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou.

Bring Her Back is now playing in theaters nationwide.

The final new horror release for the week is director Stephen Roach’s The Crucifix, an exorcism tale set on the wild coast of Scotland that was released onto VOD outlets today.

In the film, “When a couple moves to the wild coast of Scotland after the death of their son, a gruesome discovery unleashes an evil spirit that has lain dormant for centuries.”

Alex Walton, Hannaj Bang Bendz, and Nicholas Anscombe star.

We come to the horror genre to be shocked. Fans flock to scary movies for a variety of reasons, but one is to be jolted out of our everyday stresses with disarming events that play out on screen. Though we may crave this safe scare, we generally expect horror creators to abide by a set of unspoken rules. The dog will survive, the monster will be destroyed, and we will eventually see light at the end of the tunnel. Chief among these implicit guidelines is an understanding that cinematic children should not be killed. While the young often serve as hostages to danger or find themselves threatened by malevolent forces, they’re usually saved by the story’s adults or find a way to survive on their own.

Danny and Michael Philippou challenged this tacit tradition with their feature film debut Talk to Me. The 2022 Australian horror not only puts a child through several scenes of gruesome self-harm but suggests—and shows—his immortal soul tormented by nightmarish spirits. Their highly anticipated follow-up Bring Her Back is now in theaters and promises similar carnage as orphaned siblings discover a deadly ritual in the home of their new foster mother. Not known for holding back, The Philippou twins have become the latest horror creators to put cinematic children in real peril, proving that no one is safe in the horror world. They follow a harrowing tradition of notorious films willing to push our sensitivities to the breaking point by actually killing their most vulnerable characters.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)

The Last Voyage of the Demeter Review

Despite a few notable exceptions, vampire stories usually concern adults. In fact, the subgenre’s foundational text, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, is devoid of children save for the unfortunate victims of its undead brides. But a reimagining of the novel’s often overlooked chapter places an innocent child in mortal danger. Set almost entirely on the doomed Demeter, André Øvredal’s film follows an unfortunate crew tasked with transporting deadly cargo. Traveling from Bulgaria to London, this doomed vessel carries the centuries-old vampire hidden away in a crate filled with dirt from his homeland. But the unstable container fractures, freeing the blood-thirsty creature to roam the ships decks at night searching for food.

When Toby (Woody Norman) succumbs to the strange blood-borne illness overtaking the ship, his grandfather, Captain Eliot (Liam Cunningham) plans to bury him at sea. But moments before sending his body into the deep, Captain Eliot spies movement from the tiny corpse. Overcome with emotion, he rips away Toby’s shroud then screams as the undead child tries to bury newly-grown fangs into his neck. But before Toby can spread the vampiric cure, the sun’s rays cause him to burst into flames. Painfully burned, Captain Eliot is forced to throw the dying boy into the sea to keep from jeopardizing the entire ship. It’s a cruel double death for an innocent child and a reminder that no one is immune to the vampire’s curse.

Pet Sematary (1989)

Stephen King may be known as the Master of Horror, but the world-famous author admits to occasionally frightening himself. He was famously so disturbed by a draft of his 1983 novel Pet Sematary that he hid the manuscript away, considering it too terrifying to ever see publication. This unease likely stems from the fact that the story of an ordinary family ripped apart by death was inspired by his own young son wandering into the road. While King’s child survived this nightmarish event, Pet Sematary is an attempt to push parental fear to its outermost limits. Midway through the novel, young father Louis Creed (Dale Midkiff) tries in vain to stop his toddler Gage (Miko Hughes) from stumbling into a dangerous country road where he’s struck and killed by an oncoming truck.

Mary Lambert’s 1989 adaptation wrings horror and emotion from this stunning scene by following Gage’s tiny shoe through the unthinkable wreckage. Louis silently screams in anguish as a series of snapshots highlight moments from his child’s brief life. Harrowing though this sequence may be, it’s nothing compared to the horrors to come. Determined to reconnect with his lost little boy, Louis digs up Gage’s body and reenters it in cursed ground rumored to reanimate the dead. But whatever finds its way into Gage’s shattered bones is not the sweet spirit of an innocent child, but a vindictive demon hellbent on revenge. This devastating story explores the fear of loving a vulnerable child while suggesting that sometimes death may be a blessing in disguise.

The Innocents (2021)

‘The Innocents’ Review – A Provocative and Disturbing Moral Fable of Superpowered Innocence - Hold till 5/9

Eskil Vogt’s Norwegian film functions as a psychic battle royale populated by powerful, young kids. Ida (Rakel Lenora Petersen Fløttum) spends her days idly playing on the grounds of her isolated apartment complex when not tasked with looking after her nonverbal sister Anna (Alva Brynsmo Ramstad). Bored, the girls make friends with their neighbor Aisha (Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim) and a lonely boy named Ben (Sam Ashraf) who’s suppressed anger blossoms into deadly telekinetic powers. Abused and bullied, the child begins lashing out in all directions, killing animals and children alike.

Fearing they will be next, Aisha and Ida try to wield their own burgeoning psychic abilities but prove to be no match for the rage-filled little boy. Ben uses telepathy to control Aisha’s mother, causing her to stalk and murder her own frightened daughter. Ida’s parents are similarly possessed and threaten the sisters, driving them out of their now dangerous apartment and onto the playground below. The sisters must harness their collective powers and kill Ben before his rage-filled telepathy spirals out of control. This shocking film explores the inner desires of abused and neglected children while bestowing them with frightening talents and the unusual ability to control their own surroundings.

Funny Games (1997)

Michael Haneke’s genre-busting film challenges viewers to confront their own complicity in on screen violence. Throughout the film, villain Paul (Arno Frisch) addresses the audience, daring them to find entertainment in his depraved and shocking actions. He and partner Peter (Frank Giering) invade the Schober family’s lakeside vacation home and force them to engage in a series of depraved games, wagering that none will be alive by 9:00 the next morning. Their young son Schorschi (Stefan Clapczynski) must sit next to these psychopathic killers with a bag over his head as they torment and torture his frightened parents.

Eventually, Schorschi escapes to a neighbor’s house and locates a shotgun, but his captors have removed the ammunition and likely orchestrated this light chase to cause further terror. Panicked, the child bolts during another “funny game” and falls victim to the very gun he hoped would be his salvation. What follows is a brutal scene in which his mother Anna (Susanne Lothar) descends into shock and grief while trying to muster the strength to save herself. Haneke lingers on this excruciating scene before questioning the narrative fairness of his upsetting story.

Terrified (2017)

Many would-be parents move out of the city hoping to raise their young children in relative peace, but the residents of Demián Rugna’s suburban nightmare face an insidious entity lurking within their idyllic homes. This Argentinian shocker begins when a young wife overhears sinister voices wafting out of the drain. Her husband later finds her bloody corpse slamming against their bathroom walls, seemingly tossed about by unseen hands. But this demonic force does not only lurk in shadows. On a bright day, Niño (Matias Rascovschi) is playing soccer when he wanders into his neighbor’s yard and hears similar voices drifting out of the wall. Unnerved, he backs away from the house and into the path of an oncoming bus.

But whatever haunts this sinister street is not done with the poor boy yet. Comisario Funes (Maximiliano Ghione) enlists paranormal investigator Jano (Norberto Gonzalo) to assist with this mysterious haunting when the child’s rotting corpse appears at the kitchen table. Muddy footsteps suggest that Niño somehow crawled out of the grave and walked back home, going through the motions of his former life. The two men are discussing this frightening occurrence when they’re startled by the corpse’s unseen movement. Unsure what to do, they discard the poor boy’s body in a freezer and try to locate the entity terrorizing his surviving neighbors.

Grief consumes directors Danny and Michael Philippou‘s follow-up feature, Bring Her Back. It fuels everything. The kind of primal, all-consuming agony that functions like a black hole, pulling everything nearby into its gravity and extinguishing light. The Philippous’ brand of grief horror is as visceral and brutal as you’d expect based on their feature debut Talk to Me, but without any of the vibrancy or hope. Instead, Bring Her Back operates on an unwavering and palpable feeling of dread and anguish from start to end.

The only truly carefree moment at all in the Philippous’ bleak sophomore effort comes with the opening scene that introduces protective older brother Andy (Billy Barratt) as he picks up his sister Piper (Sora Wong), who is visually impaired, from the bus stop, mere moments after she tries and fails to make new friends. The tender moment between tight-knit siblings comes screeching to a halt when they arrive home to find dad dead in the shower, a traumatic moment that they barely have time to register before social services set about placing them in new homes.

They’re taken in by Laura (Sally Hawkins), an eccentric woman with a rather unusual child already in her care, the mute Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips). It turns out that Laura is also acutely familiar with profound loss, and she has plans for her new wards.

If the setup isn’t enough of an indicator, Bring Her Back is a downer of the highest order with one cruel monster at the center. Despite some rather creepy occult tapes indicating what Laura intends to accomplish and a chilling performance by Jonah Wren Phillips as the eerie possessed child at her disposal, Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman‘s script keeps the horror mostly relegated to the background. That’s not to say it’s lacking or subdued — Oliver is one nasty poster child for body horror — but that most of the tension derives from Laura’s evil machinations in her determination to see her goal through. That involves a lot of gaslighting and abuse, driving an intentional wedge between Andy and Piper, made all the more heartbreaking and vicious considering that it’s all inflicted upon minors.

As such, the film belongs to Sally Hawkins; Laura’s calculated cunning is as infuriating as it is compelling and unpredictable. Laura’s the type who knows how to deceive and turn on the charm, and how to utterly destroy a young soul still reeling from losing nearly their entire world. That Hawkins can also manage to induce sympathy for Laura’s own grief or nearly fall for her display of kindness speaks to her as a performer; the script withholds too much of Laura’s humanity until the late hour. By then, it’s far too little too late.

Part of that is owed to the incredibly heart wrenching performance by Barratt as a teen trying to hold it together during the lowest point of his life, but failing through no fault of his own. Most of it, though, is owed to the Philippous’ laser focus on situating their audience with oppressive dread at the expense of story and scares. As Andy opens up to Laura, for example, it introduces a subplot that’s clumsily handled to a manipulative degree.

Bring Her Back Review

The true horror here is of the human variety, with the occult elements perfunctory and fleeting and in support of a woman so consumed by pain that she’s become a vile beast. Bring Her Back introduces her as such and struggles to expose her humanity, making for a more tonally flat effort than the Philippous’ debut. It’s a film that makes you sit with its anguish, piling on the trauma at a steady clip until it reaches a cheerless conclusion that refuses even a semblance of catharsis for the gauntlet of misery endured.

But it’s so utterly soul crushing in its unwavering darkness that it’s hard to imagine anything coming close to beating it for the mantle of feel bad horror of the year.

Bring Her Back releases in theaters on May 30, 2025.

A24 will release Bring Her Back in theaters on May 30, 2025.

The upcoming A24 horror movie is rated “R” for “Strong disturbing bloody violent content, some grisly images, graphic nudity, underage drinking and language.“

Here’s the official plot synopsis…

A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.

Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, Sally-Anne Upton, Stephen Phillips, and Mischa Heywood also star in the film written by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman.

Marketing has done an incredible job shrouding Bring Her Back in mystery, and that’s by design. “I watch trailers, I remember every shot in a trailer,“ Michael told press at a recent event, “and I find myself, when I’m watching the movie, waiting for those moments. And you’re like, ‘Okay, well, I know that they’re alive, because that hasn’t happened in this scene, you know?‘ And it’s always that balance, because you want to sell the movie, but then you also don’t want to spoil it. A24 is on the same page. Trust me, the trailer doesn’t show the half of it.”

While that means we still don’t know much about the horror that’ll ensue, other than the trailer looking suitably creepy, we do know that the inspiration behind the film is deeply personal. Danny recalled how a tragic loss mid-writing influenced the brothers’ newest film.

“The idea of a never ending grief cycle is terrifying to me, and seeing raw grief like that is terrifying,” he explains. “And that just happened while we were writing. So, that became part of the screenwriting process, and it always is a way to express those things, or look at those things in a fun way. Hopefully it’s fun … it’ll probably not be.”

That indicates we’re likely in store for another brutal horror knockout from the Philippous this summer, supported by Bloody Disgusting’s bloody new look at Sally Hawkins’ character above.

A24 has released the official trailer for Bring Her Back, the hotly anticipated new horror movie from Danny and Michael Philippou, the directors of A24’s horror hit Talk to Me.

Sally Hawkins, Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, and Sally-Anne Upton star in Bring Her Back, which A24 will release in theaters on May 30, 2025.

A24 is describing the upcoming horror movie as “a soul-shaking possession horror that cannot be unseen.” Get a taste by watching the official trailer for Bring Her Back below.

“A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.”

“We were in the middle of writing Bring Her Back,” Danny Philippou shared during a preview event that BD attended this past Friday, “and my cousin lost her two year old, and we were in the hospital, and I was just seeing her on the bed, holding this kid, and the family were all around him, and they were holding his feet, and his hands, and his head, and his arms, and eventually, over time, everyone let him go. And my cousin was the last one to let him go.”

“Horror is a fun way to look at dark things like that,” Danny added. “Like the idea of her never being okay ever again after that, that was an inspiration point. How far she would go, you know, to heal herself from it. And the idea of a never ending grief cycle is terrifying to me, and seeing raw grief like that is terrifying.”

Talk to Me was a huge hit for A24 in 2023, the film scaring up $92 million at the worldwide box office and earning the Philippou brothers rave reviews for their feature debut.

Danny and Michael Philippou will return to direct Talk to Me 2 for A24. The Australian duo got their start with the popular YouTube channel RackaRacka, launched back in 2013.

Nearly two years after bludgeoning the box office with 2023’s Talk to Me, brothers Danny and Michael Philippou are reuniting with A24 for Bring Her Back. Although their highly anticipated followup arrives in just two months — May 30, 2025, to be exact — there’s still an impressive air of mystery to the project. Between the logline and the unnerving 65-second teaser that dropped in February, we know that two-time Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins plays a reclusive foster mother to a brother and sister who may have stumbled into a “terrifying ritual.”

Well, this past Friday, Bloody Disgusting had the opportunity to get a first look at what the Philippous are conjuring up … and they’re not missing a beat. At the ultra swanky NeueHouse Hollywood, the two brothers stormed a small stage with the contagious camaraderie that’s only matched by their chaos on celluloid. “We thank you guys so much for coming out,” Michael exclaimed. “It’s amazing that you all came out for this. Thank you, thank you.” Warm words for a Warholian hell of a room, where spiraling, ritualistic found footage cocooned the crowd.

But isn’t that the dichotomy what makes the Philippous, aka RackaRacka, such an enigma? Or why so many critics and horror hounds in 2023 shook their heads and wondered, How the hell did two YouTube creators create one of the most terrifying films of this decade? What’s the old adage? Nice guys finish last? Well, in this case, these nice Australian boys get the last laugh, at least if we’re to glean anything from the two clips and the official trailer they previewed. Their brand of look-away-look-away horror feels even more primal and inescapable.

And they know it. “The clip we’re about to show is based around Oliver, the kid who is, for some reason, starving and he’s mute,” Danny teased. “Selectively,” Michael added. Danny agreed, “Yes, he’s a little bit strange, and we’re going to see just how strange he is.” The two Wonka smiles they wore spoke volumes, like a bright yellow warning sign ahead of a rocky, nasty curve, or perhaps one of those grim grinning ghosts pulling you to the next room of the Haunted Mansion. “Roll the clip,” Michael screamed, and so did we.

Without spoiling too much, said clip — the second shown and inarguably the centerpiece of the night — involves a slice of cantaloupe, a sharp butcher knife, and possibly the most gruesome mouth injury since that unlucky trick or treater at Haddonfield Memorial Hospital in 1981’s Halloween II. You know what’s coming, but that doesn’t soften the sights in the slightest. No, as they employed all throughout Talk to Me, the Philippous ensconce the scene in a wall of sound that’d give Phil Spector a shot to the head. It’s delightfully disturbing.

An all-timer, if you will.

It works even better knowing the context. In the first clip, the Philippous set the stage by laying out the logline. We watch two foster teens — Billy Barratt and Sora Wong — meeting their new foster mother (Hawkins). But, it’s hardly the warm welcome the Philippous gave us in person. No, it’s an erratic meet and greet, exacerbated by booming music, an empty swimming pool, a mysterious memorial plate, and the eerily stoic Oliver (Jonah Wren Phillips) at the center. The palpable realization for the two teens is damning: This is home.

Themes of grief and trauma haunt both clips, not too dissimilar to the themes they explored on Talk to Me. However, there’s a heavier weight to the proceedings, no doubt heightened by this one-location setting and the apparent assertion that nowhere is safe. In fact, there’s reason to believe that the children may not even be able to escape. At one point, Oliver is carried out of the house, only he refuses to cross a white line, suggesting the supernatural may be at play in this home. Don’t ask me, though, the Philippous wisely stayed mum.

Instead, they extrapolated on the conceit of the film, particularly how it was influenced by a very real incident that happened to them. “We were in the middle of writing Bring Her Back,” Danny shared in the Q&A, “and my cousin lost her two year old, and we were in the hospital, and I was just seeing her on the bed, holding this kid, and the family were all around him, and they were holding his feet, and his hands, and his head, and his arms, and eventually, over time, everyone let him go. And my cousin was the last one to let him go.”

“Horror is a fun way to look at dark things like that,” Danny continued. “Like the idea of her never being okay ever again after that, that was an inspiration point. How far she would go, you know, to heal herself from it. And the idea of a never ending grief cycle is terrifying to me, and seeing raw grief like that is terrifying. And that just happened while we were writing. So, that became part of the screenwriting process, and it always is a way to express those things, or look at those things in a fun way. Hopefully it’s fun … it’ll probably not be.”

While that last sentiment may sound indecisive, the Philippous sound confident. That’s not an easy feat when you’re following up a blockbuster breakthrough the size of Talk to Me — let’s not forget, it became A24’s highest grossing horror film in the summer of 2023 with 92M at the box office. They’re self aware of these expectations, but also pragmatic.

“When we were first on set for Talk to Me, even the crew, didn’t take us seriously,” Danny explained. “Which is good,” Michael added. Danny continued, “But for this shoot, the crew had this respect, but internally, we came on set thinking we have no fucking idea what we’re doing. That’s how it feels. It’s just as unknown. It’s just as scary. It’s just as daunting.

“It was more anxiety ridden because you have A24 to let down. You have Sally Hawkins to let down. Everything that you do, there was an extra pressure to it. So, everything just goes out the window, and it feels like you’ve never made anything. And then you’re in the deep again, and you feel like you’re drowning again. And you’re like, ‘Oh, why the fuck did we put ourselves through this again?’ And then, at the end of it, you come out. You’re talking about it, the film’s done. It’s always a painful process, but a rewarding one.”

“Yeah, unless the film’s really bad,” Michael quickly joked. “But it’s really coming together, and we’re very happy with how it’s turning out.”

Yes, that’s present tense, as in the film is still being finished. They confirmed they’re 95% complete, dedicating these last gasps of time on the intricate sound design that has become one of their hallmarks. “We are discovering things as we’re going along,” Michael explained. “So, that’s right now. It’s fine tuning those things and really ironing them down.”

Danny added, “We’re creating unique sonic atmospheres for each character. Like close ups of their hands, getting a sense of touch, feeling things, and heightening those sounds. We even got obsessed with people’s breathing on this one, and it’s such a dangerous rabbit hole to go down. But there’s something about hearing a character’s breath up close that you naturally wouldn’t hear on film. It’s so much more personal. You can hear it. You can feel it. It’s an amazing way to convey emotions. Even for a possessed character, like certain breaths in, certain breaths out.”

Sound wasn’t the only rabbit hole the Philippous went spelunking through for Bring Her Back.

“It’s so funny going down the rabbit hole of some of that witchcraft stuff and how dark you can go,” Danny confessed. “I dressed up as a character named Trevor to meet with some other people online, and I had a long, black wig, mascara … I looked super, super in character. And then I would interview a couple of these people that would really, really believe this dark side of resurrection, and they’re looking to all that sort of stuff. There was one person I talked to that was convinced she could actually turn into a cat, which is so weird, but she believed it was real. It’s fascinating.”

What’s also fascinating is that, even after the discussion, even after the clips, and even after seeing the new official trailer, Bring Her Back still lingers in the shadows — and that is by design. “I watch trailers, I remember every shot in a trailer,” Michael argued, “and I find myself, when I’m watching the movie, waiting for those moments. And you’re like, ‘Okay, well, I know that they’re alive, because that hasn’t happened in this scene, you know?’ And it’s always that balance, because you want to sell the movie, but then you also don’t want to spoil it. A24 is on the same page. Trust me, the trailer doesn’t show the half of it.”

He’s not wrong. There’s nothing obvious about anything we’ve seen, and that was an exhilarating feeling coming out of this event. Yet what really got our blood boiling were the two filmmakers downplaying the cantaloupe scene we praised (and this writer hailed as an all-timer) earlier. Our recorder was off at that time, but during the cocktail hour that took place after, Danny and Michael both insisted upon even more horror ahead. In other words, as the bards behind Bachman Turner Overdrive sang: “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet”. Stay tuned.

Sally Hawkins, Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, and Sally-Anne Upton star in Bring Her Back, which A24 will release in theaters on May 30, 2025.
