The news comes from X user @bogorad222, who snagged the info from Dambuster’s annual report for the year ending March 31, 2025. The report, dated November 25, states that the developer’s focus would shift to Dead Island 3 once versions of Dead Island 2 for Amazon’s Luna gaming service and Mac are completed, which has already happened. Parts of the game are already in early production, with feature, character, world and story design “moving at pace” for a projected release of Q1/2 2028.

Dambuster themselves had in fact dropped hints of the sequel back in September after announcing that Dead Island 2 reached 20 million players across PC and console. “The next outbreak? Dambuster is already drenched in the work. The journey is far from over…”

“I am happy to state that [Dead Island 2] has now reached a sell-out of well over 2 million units,” states Embracer Group co-founder and CEO Lars Wingefors. “It is rewarding to see that the decision to give the studio time to polish the game has paid off.”

While the news is encouraging for fans after nearly a decade in development, the question of profitability will ultimately factor in how the series will proceed. A decade of development isn’t exactly cheap, after all. Still, we’re at least guaranteed additional chapters for the Dead Island 2, thanks to the Expansion Pass. No word yet on just when those will arrive.

According to the press release, Williams’ lifelong love of all things horror has been a driving force behind his creative output.

And if you really like the soundtrack, you can buy it digitally for $8.99 over at Amazon Music. No word on if there will be a physical version of the soundtrack just yet.

Among them, the game has been played for a cumulative 11 million hours, with over 1 billion zombies slain in the process. Speaking of the zombies, players have been busy carving them up in Dead Island 2. 45 million undead have been sliced in half since launch, with 756 million limbs having been hacked off.

Lastly, zombies aren’t the only ones dying, either. A total of 28 million player deaths have been recorded, which is over twice the population of Los Angeles. Of course, the in-game population of Los Angeles is a different story.

The opening sequence was created by ELASTIC, the studio behind cinematics for games such as Gears 5 and Metro Exodus, as well as opening sequences for television shows like “Shadow and Bone” and “His Dark Materials“.

It’s certainly a different tone than the one we saw from the teaser trailer all the way back in 2014. But then, there’s obviously been a lot going on with Dead Island 2 in those nine years.

Featuring Dani, one of the Slayers you’ll be playing as in Dead Island 2, the gameplay footage sees her meeting up with Standard zombies (Walkers, Shamblers, Runners), Variant zombies (grenadier walkers), and Apex zombies (hyper mutated zombies), each one with its own powers and behaviors.

That’s not to say that players will be at a disadvantage. You’ll be making use of each Slayer’s abilities, along with Skill Cards to enhance abilities and create unique player builds. You can also take advantage of the environment around you, allowing you to even the odds through chaining together different elemental damage types such as electricity, fire and acid.

Also on display is the FLESH System (Fully Locational Evisceration System for Humanoids), which as we’ve seen previously, allows for detailed levels of gore in your gameplay as you crush bones and slice up zombies in Dead Island 2.

Lastly, we get a taste of what happens when your chosen Slayer activates their corrupted DNA and triggers Fury Mode.

Reported by GameInformer, the FLESH system in Dead Island 2 allows for players to literally tear zombies from limb from limb. The new interview (which you can find below) sees Dambuster Studios’ senior render programmer Aaron Ridge and technical art director Dan Evans-Lawes chat it up about the gory new system.

It’s pretty simple, actually: depending on where you strike a zombie and what weapons you use determines how much damage is progressively done to that particular area. Got a bladed weapon? Repeated slicing will cut through skin and clothing, reaching the muscle, and eventually reaching the bone underneath. What’s even more impressive that this is all generated on the fly.

“Lots of games have gore, and they all work in different ways. But where the FLESH system really takes it forward is how it has this progressive effect,” explains Ridge. “So you can continue in many, many different ways as you attack a zombie.” Compared to other games, says Ridge, you might have a system where you can damage a zombie and hack of its limbs, but you won’t get that “progressive feeling” with the FLESH system that results in more damage and more feedback.

According to the post, the delay is to ensure that Dambuster is able to release Dead Island 2 in the best possible state.

It’s not all bad news, however. Dambuster will be dropping a new trailer and gameplay footage during the Dead Island 2 Showcase on December 6, which will be broadcast on Twitch and YouTube.

Per the Amazon listing (before it was heavily redacted, naturally), Dead Island 2 will be available on both last-gen and current-gen Xbox and PlayStation consoles, as well as PC on February 3, 2023 (per the original page listing). They also posted a summary of the story, which is as follows (thanks, GameInformer):

During the Q&A session that followed the report, Carnegie equity research analyst Oscar Erixon posed the question of if it was “reasonable” that people would expect Dead Island 2 to arrive during the next financial year. In doing so, Erixon attempted to goad Wingefors into giving up some info about the game. “People have sort of written off [Dead Island 2], not knowing if it’s still alive. But it very clearly is. I, at least, expect the release this financial year—sorry, next financial year, I should say. Is that reasonable? What can we expect from the title?”

Wingefors stuck to the script with regards to unannounced game. “I can’t talk about Dead Island 2 because it’s not announced, as such, from the publisher, but we have just talked about—we have one unannounced triple-A title that you think is Dead Island 2.” Wingefors also had a bit of a wink in his answer, adding “It’s hard for me to comment further on that. But I’m excited about unannounced titles.”

This coyness is pretty much in line with Deep Silver’s past reactions to fans inquiring about Dead Island 2. Deep Silver had a bit of fun with a fan’s disappointment last year after the new Saints Row game was announced, for example.

The question obviously remains as to when Dead Island 2 will be officially announced, and just when it’ll be released. Who knows? We might just get the answers this year at E3.

Per industry insider Tom Henderson in a YouTube video, speaking to people close to the game’s development, he claims that Dead Island 2 is still in development over at Dambuster Studios, and we could be hearing about it soon. “According to everyone that I’ve been speaking to… the game is in a decent state, and it could be announced pretty soon with some kind of gameplay trailer.”

As for when the game would be released, Henderson goes with the approximate timeframe of “somewhere in Q4 2022”, depending on how the current development cycle goes.

And to add a bit more to that, Henderson also drops some preliminary plot details. “You’re on a plane and there’s a zombie outbreak on a plane… eventually the plane crashes into Hollywood, you survive and it’s then your job to survive on the ground.”

Neither Deep Silver nor Dambuster have commented on or responded to any of this as of yet.

To recap the history of Dead Island 2, it was announced way back in 2014, with a 2015 release date. However, that was under developer Yager Development (who eventually went bankrupt). After a series of delays, the game was handed over to Sumo Digital. Publisher Deep Silver then switched developers again, to Dambuster Studios.

A 2015 build of the game was subsequently leaked to the internet a few years ago.

Currently, Dead Island 2 is being developed for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

But when deliveries start going awry, the Rangers investigating the situation find the industrial complex in disarray. Seems that there’s a bit of a revolt going on, and you can decide its outcome.

The new DLC promises new quests, new foes, new gameplay mechanics and more. Among the new mechanics are telegraphed attacks, non-lethal weaponry and stacking status effects that provide a new dimension to your battles, and offer more in terms of strategy.

Don’t worry if you think you’re going to be overpowered, either: the new DLC will scale the combat and gear when entering Steeltown, ensuring that you won’t arrive without any challenges.

Per Gematsu, the resurrected Free Radical Design will begin work on the new TimeSplitters game “in the coming months”. The new Free Radical Design team is made up key members of the original team, including founders Steve Ellis and David Doak.

In a press release, Deep Silver global brand and marketing director Paul Nicholls stated “It’s this unique style that earned the TimeSplitters series a large and passionate following who will, without doubt, be excited by the formation of Deep Silver’s latest studio and will look forward to learning more as the franchise moves forward.”

Steve Ellis added, “To finally be able to confirm that the studio has been formed and that we have a plan for the next TimeSplitters game is incredible. While we cannot tell you anything more at the moment, we look forward to sharing information in the future.”

For those unfamiliar with the TimeSplitters series, the first-person shooter was created by the same minds who created GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64. A mix of sci-fi, horror and humour, TimeSplitters has humans battling against a race of alien beings known as the TimeSplitters, who travel through time changing the course of history in order to bring about humanity’s destruction.

Titled Metro Exodus Complete Edition, this enhanced version will arrive on June 18, and will be available as a free upgrade to users who own the game on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. There will also be a new physical version that includes both DLC expansions in “The Two Colonels” and “Sam’s Story”.

Much like the Enhanced Edition, the new Complete Edition will sport graphical overhauls, including running at 4K resolution at 60 fps with full Ray Traced lighting. The Complete Edition will also sport console-specific enhancements, including spatial audio and controller latency improvements on Xbox, and support haptic feedback for the DualSense controller on the PS5.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions of Metro Exodus will include “major enhancements” such as higher frame rate, increased resolution, reduced loading times, and ray tracing support. Users who own Metro Exodus for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, whether physical or digital, will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series version free of charge.

On top of that news, 4A Games also confirmed that they’re in the process of working on the next Metro game, and is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC with a “complete overhaul of [the 4A Games] engine and renderer to take advantage of the new power, storage, and hardware supported ray tracing afforded by the new consoles.” Details are light at the moment, but 4A Games did state that the developer is looking to add a multiplayer component to this upcoming entry.

“We’re committed to delivering a great story-driven single-player experience; this is what the Metro series is founded on,” the studio said in a press release. “As a studio, we want to constantly push ourselves to create bigger and better games, but we also listen to what the fans are saying, and we know what’s important to you. We take our responsibility to the franchise seriously, and we think you’ll be excited about our plans for the next chapter.”

4A Games said that it is not looking to jump onto some multiplayer trend, but wants to explore a multiplayer experience that “makes sense in the Metro universe” and wouldn’t affect the single-player aspect of the game.

Publishers Tripwire Interactive and Deep Silver with developer Blindside Interactive state that Maneater for PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series will support ray tracing, native 4K HDR resolution at 60 frames per second, and new lighting effects. The PC version on the Epic Games Store (and eventually Steam) will receive these enhancements in 2021 via a free update.

Users who currently own Maneater for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series version free of charge.

“The Tripwire team has been overwhelmed by the great reception Maneater received since it launched earlier this year, and we can’t wait for players to experience the thrill of playing as a deadly shark in all of her powerful glory on next-gen consoles,” said Tripwire Interactive CEO John Gibson in a press release. “With next-gen Maneater has never looked better with amazing ray traced water and smooth 4k 60 frames per second gameplay, but the adventures won’t stop there, as fans can expect even more exciting news about the future of Maneater soon.”

Maneater first launched for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store on May 22, and has since sold over one million units. It is also planned for release on the Nintendo Switch.

In Wasteland 3, you can start a new game either in co-op mode, or continue your previously-saved games in co-op. The person who hosts the game will determine who controls which characters, and who controls joint conversations. You and your friends can then go around the city, finding different quests and talking to different people at the same time. On top of that, each of you will be able to control his/her own conversation options.

Best of all, there are some co-op-only features in the game. This includes the potential of turning in quests to two rival NPCs at the same time for double the reward, for example. Of course, if you’re the type to screw with your friends, you can also do things like spread rumors around them at your base, or even steal their clothes.

As for when you finish a co-op playthrough, you’ll have a save from the last checkpoint that you’d left the game, giving you the option to continue the game on your own, or with a friend once again.

Wasteland 3 will launch for PC via and Xbox One. The title will also be available through Xbox Game Pass and the Microsoft Store. An Xbox Series X version is also in the works, which will launch when the console arrives.

As you might expect, the beta isn’t the most polished (read: it contains bugs), but it does give you a taste of a couple hours of gameplay ahead of the game’s actual release this May. InXile has stressed that any of the content seen in the beta is subject to change, as well as the game not being optimised for everyone. They encourage those playing the beta to use an in-game reporting tool to let testers identify and report on any of the technical hitches they may encounter.

If, for some reason, you’re not up to speed on the game, Hunt is set in Louisiana in 1895, and mixes PvP and PvE elements. In the classic game mode, a match of Hunt pits ten players—playing solo or in teams of two—against each other as they race to take out a monster for a bounty they must collect and get off of the map. Hunt also offers a quickplay mode for solo players to scavenge for weapons as they compete for a diminishing pool of bounty. The higher the risk, the higher the reward, but a single mistake could cost everything.

Hunt: Showdown is also available on PC via Steam, and Xbox One.
