To say that horror and metal go hand in hand is an understatement. It’s one of those magical connections where both cultures are viewed as outsiders in their medium and yet their fans are rabid, defending and understanding the genre for everything positive and worthwhile it has to offer.

Plus, you can’t deny that metal has some serious love of the horror genre. Think of Iron Maiden’s “Eddie” or Megadeth’s “Vic Rattlehead”. Give a minute to dwell on Metallica and their great many horror-themed songs. How about Slayer and, well…being fucking Slayer.

And more and more these rock and metal musicians are getting their feet into the horror world. David Bowie did it with The Hunger, Sully Erna was in Army Of The Damned, Dee Snider in Strangeland, and the list goes on and on. There’s obviously a passion for metal heads to be a part of the horror world.

But what if they went behind the camera and used their musical talents to create the ultimate unseen character for a horror film: the score. Imagine these musicians, who know how to write incredibly heavy and intense music turning their skills to something that requires more subtlety, more finesse, and more experimentation, but still needs that intensity, that sheer in-your-face quality. The end results could be absolutely magnificent if the right musician was connected with the right kind of movie.

So let’s go with that! Let’s take that thread and explore five possibilities that would work, in my mind, beautifully.

Mad scientist Devin Townsend – because what other way is there to describe him? – has released a short teaser for Ziltoid 2, which will be coming out October 28th. The teaser can be seen below.

Townsend explains the album:

So it’s been years I’ve been trying to get the energies in line to do another Ziltoid record, and it’s finally happened! Z2 is my new record, and it’s a multimedia event that has taken a ton of people a ton of effort to bring to you! It’s a double album, (one side DTP, and one side Ziltoid) and the concept expands on Ziltoid the alien, and his sci-fi adventures in a way that kind of throws back to 50’s radio plays… but obviously with complicated, heavy music as its soundtrack. It has taken a great deal of energy to put this all together, and the music is just one of the aspects of it.

A show where the album will be played in its entirety is scheduled for April 13th, 2015 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, which is already sold out.

There is no set release date or other information for this new material but we can hope that it comes sooner rather than later!

Also, vocalist Dominique Lenore Persi has confirmed that she will be appearing on Devin Townsend‘s upcoming Ziltoid 2, which began recording in May of this year. More details are expected to be released soon.

Musical mad scientist Devin Townsend and vocalist Ché Aimee Dorval comprise the duo known as Casualties Of Cool, a new project that is more in line with country than the rock and metal that Townsend is known for. In fact, Townsend states that the music, “…sounds like Johnny Cash songs. Late night music, completely isolated sounding and different than anything I’ve done.

To give people a taste, the duo has released an official music video for the track “Mountain Top”, which was animated by Jessica Cope. The video shows an astronaut who lands on a planet that is more nightmarish than one would ever hope. Skeleton arms pop out of the land, eager to pull whatever they can into the ground. There’s also a strange woman who reminds me of the orb from Heavy Metal.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Devin Townsend. The man is not only a genius songwriter and a brilliant guitar player but he’s also one of the nicest and most genuine guys I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing. He’s really something out of this world and the day that he stops making music is going to be a truly devastating day for the industry.

But let’s not think morosely here, shall we? Instead, let’s celebrate just how awesome Townsend is with a new video that was posted by EMGpickupsTV that shows the crazed musician playing through a nearly 11 minute medley entitled “Willy Wanka”. It’s super enjoyable to watch simply because of how dynamic the piece is. It goes from ambient beauty with lush reverbs and spacious delays to crunchy distorted madness and back again. And what’s even better is that it’s 100% obvious how much Townsend is enjoying himself. He performs for the camera, he smiles along with the music, he not only taps his feet but moves his whole body to the music. This is a man who has given himself entirely into what he does and it’s inspiring.

Go on below. Give it a watch. If you haven’t checked out Devin and his work before, let today be the start of an amazing journey for you.

Information from Townsend’s Pledge Music pages states that the album will see guest appearances from Che Aimee (vocalist on Ki), Morgan Ågren (Drummer extraordinaire from Thordendal, Zappa, Laswell, etc), Jessica Cope, Jørgen Munkeby, Kat Epple, The Swedish Sångkraft choir, a string section…

If that’s the case, then look no further as we at BD are here with some suggestions to get your MP3 player packed to the brim with awesome new tunes! Head on down to see what we culled from this year!

FILMS & TV/COMICS & BOOKS

Devin TownsendRetinal Circus

$19.50 – Purchase Here

C’mon guys, it’s Devin freakin’ Townsend! This live DVD is batsh!t insane and features one of the most innovative stage productions I’ve seen. It’s also pretty amazing to see the documentary which explains how last-minute the whole thing was. If you want to know more about it, head on over to my review.

Russian Circles – Memorial

$9.99 – Purchase Digitally Here or Purchase Physically Here

Chicago instrumental post-rockers Russian Circles have returned with one of their most intense, beautiful albums to date. Heavily influenced by the cold, icy landscapes of the black metal genre, this album is still permeated with lush melodies and dynamic tonal changes. Bonus: fantastic singer/songwriter Chelsea Wolfe guest appears on the album.

LazerhawkSkull And Shark

$12.99 – Purchase Here

For fans of 80’s horror synth, you need look no further than Skull And Shark for one of the greatest releases of 2013. Lazerhawk takes all the tropes and tones that made the 80’s horror scene so iconic and deliciously weaves them together into something that any genre fan can get behind.

Day Of The Dead Vinyl OST Reissue

$34 – Purchase Here

Completely remastered from the original master tapes. Liner notes from composer John Harrison and director George A. Romero. An 11×22 poster included. It’s all right here, everything you could possibly want from a reissue. If all that hasn’t convinced you yet that this is the definitive version of the Day Of The Dead soundtrack, then I’m simply at a loss for words.

Halloween Vinyl OST

$30 – Purchase Here

HOW IS THIS NOT SOLD OUT YET?!?! Sure, we’ve all heard Carpenter’s iconic score for this film probably thousands of times by now. But hearing it on brand new vinyl is an experience in and of itself. Do yourself a favor and get this, either for yourself or for the Halloween fan in your life.

Heaven’s Basement – Filthy Empire

$9.99 – Purchase Here

In my review of this album, I called Heaven’s Basement, “…the new Guns N’ Roses of the 21st century,” and that’s a statement that I wholly stand behind. These guys offer balls-to-the-wall hard rock with unrestrained enthusiasm and a kick ass attitude. Definitely one of the most infectious albums this year and it also benefits from having absolutely zero filler tracks. Every song is killer!

Last House On The Left Vinyl OST Reissue

€20.00 – Purchase Here

This is for our European readers. One Way Static Records has released the definitive reissue for Wes Craven’s classic rape-revenge thriller Last House On The Left, which was composed by David Hess (who also played the villainous Krug). Limited to only 1,400 copies, the vinyl comes packed with liner notes from some of the biggest film/TV composers around.

Maniac Vinyl OST

£21.00 – Purchase Here

Again, this option goes out to our amazing readers across the pond. Composer Rob‘s synth heavy score has been lauded as one of the best offerings this year. Very much influenced by 70’s and 80’s horror films, this score adds depth and excitement to an already fantastic film. Keep in mind that as of writing this post there are only 89 out of 500 copies left!

Check out this awesome feature on the film’s music here.

Nine Inch Nails – Hesitation Marks

Various Prices – Purchase Here

This one disappointed a lot of us when it came out in September. But, you know what? It’s a grower! I still don’t like “Everything” all that much but it’s a perfect gift for any NIN completists in your family that don’t already have it.” ~ ED

Nirvana – In Utero: 20th Anniversary Reissue

Purchase CD Box Here or Purchase Vinyl Here

The big box of this is expensive as f*ck but it’s worth it to see the smile on the face of whomever you buy it for. Not only does it have the original album remastered, it also has brand new mixes of each song overseen by Steve Albini. For this reason alone I’m going to link you to the CD and vinyl versions of the product only. This album sounds too good to be disgraced by the MP3 format. The Vinyl sounds better, but the CD boxed set comes with a LOT of extras, including a full live show and a beautiful book.” ~ ED

And now I turn to you, the lovely readers! Is there anything on here that we’re missing? Some album that we desperately need to check out? Let us know in the comments!

Devin Townsend is perhaps the very embodiment of the “mad scientist” when it comes to the metal genre. From Ziltoid The Omniscent to his Devin Townsend Quadrilogy, Townsend’s approach to music is less that of a standard album and more of a theatrical experience where each album has a theme, a continuous string that can be followed so as to make the entirety feel like a journey.

And such is the case with The Retinal Circus, Townsend’s new live album, which takes music from the 20+ year history of his work and sets a story behind it, all to the visual and aural delight of a sold out crowd at the Roundhouse in London, England in a special one-night only event.

Now, this retrospective concert has been released and we take a look at it to see if Townsend’s work is as epic as he aimed for of if he strives for the stratosphere only to come crashing and burning to the ground.

The first thing that should be noticed about this setup is the multi-storied stage production, which allows for the “story” to take place both above the group and in the midst of them, creating a dynamic experience where we’re not sure if the band is part of the narration or are themselves characters in the arc.

Secondly, it’s amazing to see how Devin doesn’t so much perform, rather conducting the entire show, engaging with the audience and the stage cast equally. His charm and enthusiasm are incredibly evident and infectious, his joy-filled smiles nearly splitting his face in half. His jokes and commentary mock the somewhat cheesy nature of the event, poking at the absurdity and joining the audience in on the laughter while still being the master of the joke.

Third, the editing of the DVD is aimed at creating an immersive experience for the viewer. There are times when the edits are specifically done to further the narrative rather than just cut from one band member to another. This allows for the viewing experience to be something far more than just a concert; it becomes a captivating journey, each song a chapter in a book that won’t let you put it down.

The concert opens with legendary guitarist Steve Vai (Townsend was Vai’s vocalist on Sex & Religion) offering a monologue that sets up the story of Harold, the main character of The Retinal Circus. Injecting humor through visuals and cheeky commentary, Vai becomes an integral part of the show, appearing very often before a song to explain the meaning of the next track and how it relates to Harold. Also, creepy clowns come out and pantomime to the audience.

Suddenly, the choir, which is broken in half by the drum kit, burst into “Effervescence” and frequent Townsend collaborator Anneke Van Giersbergen comes onto the stage, her glorious voice soaring as our ringmaster, Devin himself, emerges clad in white. While it’s basically impossible to miss, it does need to be stated that the vocal chemistry between Giersbergen and Townsend can only be described as magical. It’s rare that two voices can mesh so well, even with Townsend shifting from soaring opera to vicious growls, and yet they do.

When the band breaks into “Lucky Animals” it becomes wholly obvious the scope and insanity that is in store for the viewer. Half of the choir cast aside their robes to reveal that they are dressed as animals. They begin prancing around stage, many of them sinuously slipping and sliding on their hands and knees, tails and noses twitching. These animals then face capture and are caged during “Planet Of The Apes” by, you probably guessed it, people in ape costumes, a subtle commentary on how evolution seems to come with a sense of superiority and need to control and contain those that are “below us”.

The audience is given more attention in the next track, “Truth”, while the light show is also on full display. The two choir halves take off their robes to show the one half are wearing DTP shirts while the other half are wearing Ziltoid shirts. This causes the two to mock and taunt each other, the beginnings of a battle that explodes into full force in “War”. It is in “War” that the term “musical theater” fully applies. This is where the concert truly cements its place as an event and not just another gig.

I could go on and on through each song but that would ruin the surprises that are in store for you, the viewer. I’ll say that there are more amazing and bewildering visuals and that things only get crazier from there on out. There is a giant inflatable penis, a large vagina that “births” a Ziltoid baby, skeleton dancers, she-devil temptresses, fire breathers, pole dances, silk acrobats, fascinating aliens that have the same back spires as the Xenomorphs from the Alien series, acoustic performances (“Ih Ah” is nothing short of stunning), and so much more. There isn’t a dull moment in the whole DVD.

Audio-wise, the only gripe I have is that there are times where I wished the vocals of each singer were turned up just a bit. I would also have liked there to be a bit more of the audience in the mix, something to make me feel like I was actually there. Visually the show is crisp and the camera angles plentiful.

A short documentary goes over the process of the event, from inception to actual performance. It’s rather amazing how much of the show was done in the 24 hours leading up to doors opening. It’s also a testament to the madness of Townsend but also to the trust that his band and crew have in him. Instead of worrying that it could not have been pulled off, they gave everything, their full energy and more, to make sure that everything would go as planned.

The Final Word: For fans of Devin Townsend, purchasing a copy of this is a no-brainer. However, for people who aren’t that well versed in Townsend’s work, The Retinal Circus is a perfect entry into the world of his music. It showcases his passions, his theatricality, and, yes, his insane genius while being entirely playful and charming.

Theatrical, kooky, insane, calculating, genius… These are just a few words that can be used to describe Devin Townsend, someone who I consider to be one of the hardest working musicians in the industry these days. When he is not constantly releasing albums, he is producing or guesting on albums, some of which might make a person raise their eyebrows. And now the man is gearing up to release Retinal Circus, the live London performance from fall 2012.

With over three hours of performance, the concert spanned the history of Townsend’s career and included a full choir, theatrical cast, special guests, and visual/aural enhancements that were unlike anything Townsend had done before.

The first clip from the concert, a video “Grace”, can be seen below. Frequent Townsend collaborator Anneke Van Giersbergen (ex-The Gathering) has a front and center appearance. Check it out below!

Townsend comments, “So closing in on 8 months of work, we’re almost finished with the ‘Retinal Circus’! It’s been a huge amount of work for everyone, from the show, down to DVD & Blu-ray authoring, artwork, logistics…(not to mention the show itself!) but we’re almost there, and when watched in its entirety, it’s really a heck of an experience!
To tie you over until it’s out, here’s a clip of the song ‘Grace’…It’s out of context obviously, but hopefully gives you a vague idea of what’s about to come out.

It’s been a ton of work for everybody and we’re really quite proud of it…When the final products have been produced, we’ll let you know!

Fun! Whew!!!

Retinal Circus editions (pre-orders will become available here:
–standard 2-disc DVD
–standard 1-disc Blu-Ray
–standard 2-CD audio
–special edition 2-DVD/1-Blu Ray/2-CD box set
–diehard deluxe fan box incl. 2-DVD/1-Blu Ray/2-CD (full details of its contents to be revealed soon)

French progressive metal band Uneven Structure has released a full stream of their EP 8. Originally released in 2009, the band has since “re-worked, re-recorded and re-packaged” the EP to bundle it with their 2011 full length album Februus (which is a fantastic album, I might add).

Guitarist Igor Omodei states, “8, as a collective piece is something we love to play live but the way we do now is quite different from the 2009 EP. So we decided to release this altered version by going back to the drawing board, reworking it, taking advantage of the lineup consolidation and technical progress we’ve been through since the original was out. This is a thank you to our fans for being so supportive and believing in us, and we really hope they will enjoy what we’ve done with it. Whilst they enjoy this, we’re busy in our batcave, working on our second album. We want to get that exactly right as it’s a concept album, the technical aspect is more engaging than on Februus and we’re leaving more room for experimentation which means our writing spectrum is broad as hell.

Described as “…Pink Floyd’s creativity meets Meshuggah’s brutality with a side serving of Devin Townsend’s progressive charm,“, the 8 EP is available to pre-order along with Februus here. You can listen to the full stream below.

If you were into huge internet memes about 10 years ago or so then you’ll remember Weebl, the website that had a ton of different looping flash cartoons with absurdly catchy songs. My personal favorites were the original Magical Trevor, Narwhals, and Crabs. But the most popular one, without a doubt, was Badgers. It honestly seemed like I couldn’t go a day without someone posting a link to that flash cartoon on a forum or in a chatroom.

Well, that classic internet video has now received a metal remix thanks to the wildly eccentric Devin Townsend, who posted the track on YouTube yesterday. The drums are courtesy of Soilwork‘s Dirk Verbeuren and the track was recorded during the Deconstruction studio sessions. Check it out below!

What was your favorite Weebl toon?

Bloody-Disgusting is thrilled to bring you an exclusive interview with none other than the great Devin Townsend! Discussing everything from his new coffee maker to the just-released Epicloud to scoring a movie, we get the rundown on all that is going on in the world of Devin Townsend. Read this extensive interview below!

Epicloud was released this past Tuesday. Make sure to pick up your copy either via CMDistro or iTunes/Amazon.

Bloody-Disgusting: How are you doing?
Devin Townsend: Good buddy, how are you doing?

BD: Not too shabby! How’s life treating you these days?
DT: It’s good! Like how a baby treats a diaper.

BD: What’s new and exciting for you these days?
DT: Uhhh…got a new coffee maker! It’s pretty sweet. You set a timer on it, wake up in the morning and get coffee. Other then that, a ton of sh*t in music! [Laughs]

BD: [laughs] Sounds fun! Before we get started, I have to ask, is it pronounced “epi-cloud” or “epic-loud”?
DT: Both. It was me being clever.

BD: Gotcha. Because I’ve been saying “epi-cloud” this whole time.
DT: I guess that’s what I’ve been saying too. It’s a double-entendre [laughs].

BD: The recording process for your albums is always something amazing to hear about and see in videos. How grand did you get with Epicloud?
DT: Oh dude, I mean…You know, I’ve got 25 records, right? So, everything that I do is a result in a lot of ways of me finding a theme or a concept that engages me and that appeals to where my life is currently at. Epicloud has that in spades.
But when I went into it, my thought process was to make something that was easy to listen to and didn’t have incredibly narcissistic metaphor about my own process, because I’ve been doing that forever. So, in order to do that, the pieces of this puzzle started coming together in that, okay, I wrote a chorus and that’s a big chorus. How would we take this to a level that you’ve hinted at. When I make music, I tend to make music that are really over the top. But I think there’s also the part of me that is aware that I do that a lot of the times and, in the past, has been insecure about it or tried to hide it. You know, I’ll read a review or do an interview and I’ll read or hear “there are layers of sound” or “this over-the-top thing” and blah blah blah, “I’d like to see it stripped back”. And so this time I was just like, “F*ck it! How far would you take it if you could?”
It started by getting this really big drum set. Done. We’ll make all the chords really open so when we play them there’s a lot of space to fill in. Okay, done! Vocally, let’s make the melodies this sort of effervescent uplifting tonality. And then from there it just sort of snowballed. Let’s put a gospel choir on it, let’s take that over-the-top dynamic that you’re obviously toying with and just hammer it home.
And so the process became just how big can we make this? And it’s debatable as to how well we achieved that because obviously I do all my own stuff. It’s gonna have its deficits in terms of the technical end of it but, as far as I can take it, I did. As a moment of time specifically where it represents me perhaps getting over the fact that I’m being afraid to be this accessible… You know, in the past I was afraid to say, “No, I really want to make a very easy to listen to commercial sounding record” because I love that type of music. And then not only committing to that but also committing to the Liberace grandness of it all, it’s really cool for me to sit back and listen to it because I got it out of my system. And I think it’s been, like, clogging up the pipes for many years now.

BD: So it sounds like there were zero limits when it came to the recording process for this record.
DT: Well, I think I’ve been guilty, if you want to look at it that way, of doing that for a long time now [laughs]. Deconstruction and Ghost was definitely like that! But I think the difference is, with Epicloud, there is a stigma, I find, specifically if you’ve done left-of-center heavy music for the majority of your career there’s a real safety in not straying from that. I think it’s a safer move for me to make an album like Deconstruction than it is like Epicloud. I actually think it’s safer for me to make an album like Ghost than it is to make Epicloud, because Epicloud you run that fine line of making commercial, radio-friendly music, right? And I think that once I kind of searched my motivation, I realized that I love stuff like that and I’ve been afraid to do that more than anything because I was concerned that I would be ostracized from this scene that I’d been involved with for so long. And so, when I finally committed to myself and decided that it would be an album in a catalog that would likely not contain anything like it ever again, when I finally made the decision to go for it, I was like, “Okay, just go for it. Make it exactly what it wants to be. And then from there? Damn the torpedoes. I’ll lay it out and then people can make their own decisions on it.”

BD: You said that you were at some point worried about being ostracized from the heavy “left-of-center” community. But I’m curious if you were at all concerned that you might not show the popular music scene justice with Epicloud?
DT: No, god no! That’s definitely not a concern. I don’t believe I’ve ever had that concern for any style I’ve done. I guess I’m just so far up my own ass that doing a scene justice has never been a part of my process. To the point where I’m sure that I’ve upset people. For example, when I released Deconstruction, I was pretty convinced in my own head, “Yeah, this is a really great heavy metal record!” But I immediately encountered this frame of mind of, “Not Strapping [Young Lad]? Get the f*ck out.” You know, I don’t want to hear you do anything heavy unless it adheres to this parameter that either the audience or myself imposed upon that scene, so many years ago.
And so when Deconstruction first came out and got hit with that criticism, not from everyone but from some people, my first though was, “Huh! That’s actually really liberating!” Because if I’m not longer able to fit into that scene when I’m giving it everything I’ve currently go to do so, then what the f*ck am I hanging onto it for? Go do what you want to do! Then after Deconstruction I started writing again. Before the Zed Squared Symphony, which is a couple of years down the line, before I do anything like that, I just want to make a commercial sounding record and I think it was really liberating to have Deconstruction sort of viewed as not appropriate for the metal scene by and large because it allowed me to put that need to conform totally aside and make a record like this.
Now, I have to say with Epicloud, it’s not like I am selling it to a hard rock scene. The people who are going to buy this record are the same people who have bought my sh*t for years. It’s not like I’m in any real danger of reaching out to a new market. And so, also there’s that! I made Epicloud for the people that have listened to what I’ve done because I really think that this style of music fits well into my personal daily life and hopefully others. And then, from here on out, who knows where it’s going to go?

BD: One of the things you mentioned was this sort of “unclogging of creative pipes”. Have you noticed that a lot of new musical ideas have been flowing out?
DT: Hoo! The new stuff that I’m writing… I think in the past my love for commercial things, I equate it to being in the closet where it ends up leeching out into what you do in ways that maybe compromise things that don’t need that. If I’m writing something that’s left-of-center as opposed to trying to crowbar in a commercial sounding chorus and having this strange conglomeration of styles in one place, and there’s validity to that, of course. The stuff I’m writing now is, “No, I did that! I’m good! It’s out!” I don’t have to drop a commercial sounding song into the middle of a Ziltoid record because I managed, with Epicloud, to purge that. And so what I’m writing now is, in my opinion, completely free that I’ve done. If it requires a melodic aspect that’s accessible, of course I’ll put that in there. But there’s no subconscious need to try and get it heard because I’m too afraid to put it out there in its entirety, unabashed. And so Zed Squared, Casualties of Cool, everything I’ve been writing since Epicloud has been this relentless zero compromise.
And I find it strange in hindsight how your own inability to recognized parts of your artistic nature compromise your output until you address it.

BD: There was the quadrilogy of Devin Townsend Project albums: Ki, Addicted, Deconstruction, and Ghost. Does Epicloud fit within that line of albums or is the beginning of something new?
DT: No, no, it’s a summary of that. I had no real intention of making Epicloud. As soon as I had finished recording Deconstruction and Ghost, I was like, “Right, time to start writing this symphony.” It’s a couple of years away, I want to do a movie, it’s this massive undertaking. But when I sat down to write it, I realized that I wasn’t ready yet! I had done a ton of complicated stuff with those two albums and the full records having these narcissistic metaphors about my own personal growth that I just wasn’t interested in it. I found that my love for music is, in my opinion, unabashed and has a lot to do with being free to make the expression of where I’m at currently real.
And I started thinking, “I’ve done these four records, what a catharsis! It’s out of my system!” And if those records are about just getting over it, then I started writing music about just being over it and that became Epicloud. The fact that it’s so soon after Deconstruction and Ghost and yet so far away from Zed Squared, it’s like you’re over the cloud, as silly as that sounds. And even the album cover. You’re going into outer space but you can still see the planet [laughs]. You’re still here but see ya!
And so Epicloud is definitely a way to summarize what I’ve been trying to say over these past four records by essentially saying, “There! I’ve said it! See ya!” [laughs]

BD: Tell me a bit about the “Epic Kings & Idols” tour. What are your thoughts of that line-up?
DT: It’s odd, y’know? Where I’m at as a live entity is definitely a very positive thing. I want it to be intense and light-hearted. I want it to be a bit of a party when people come to the show because life is pretty grim, right? If we can offer respite for an hour or so, that’s good for me when I’m out. In the back of a van in the parking lot of Detroit, I’d rather have a good time than not.
But I guess the thing is when we come out with Katatonia and Paradise Lost and Stolen Babies, each band has got its own vision of reality, I suppose. And so, investigating the bands I realized that all these bands are really good, like the new Katatonia stuff is so good man! And I don’t know if you’ve heard Stolen Babies but, f*ck man, they’re killer! And Paradise Lost, I’ve known those guys for a while and they’re just such nice people that I think, on the surface, it may come across as many different moods in one night. But standing back from that I think it’s really interesting for people.
It’s not that there is one band that is better than any other. It’s just four different takes on music and life and I think it could potentially end up being a really, really memorable show for the people who come out. And that’s what I’m setting myself up for and what the band is gearing themselves for as opposed to tapering our set to fit in with Katatonia’s music, we’re just gonna make the best show that we’d like to see. And if the other bands are doing the same thing, which I’m assuming they are, it could end up being a great night of varying moods!
When we play shows, I just want to say, “F*ck it. Let’s do our best to have a good time.”

BD: If you were approached to do a movie score, what would it take for you to say, “Yes.”?
DT: Umm…enough money for me to spend a year doing it without anything else and creative control, complete.
I’m very sensitive as to what kinds of movies I bring into my world. I’m not interested in sadistic sh*t, I’m not interested in Human Centipede type sh*t. It’s not that I think it’s right or wrong it’s just that I have zero interest in that type of art. I think that if someone wanted me to do music, it’d have to be a theme I relate to, otherwise I’d have nothing to offer. I did a video game soundtrack at one point and I couldn’t do it because I just don’t care about video games.
So, with a movie, it would have to be something that inspires me. And once I’m inspired, I’m good to go!

BD: Devin, as always, it’s been a real pleasure. Thank you and best of luck to you!
DT: You too buddy! Talk to you soon!

Bloody-Disgusting is excited to bring you the exclusive album artwork premiere for Naught, the upcoming album from Stolen Babies! The artwork is deceptive, to say the least. At first glance, it seems very innocent and happy, showing a dark pink sheep in the middle of a “Who Framed Roger Rabbit Toon Town”-esque setting. But at closer inspection, things become more stranger, creating a sense of unease. The colors, while bright, have a dark tinge. The houses, seemingly happy, have a worried tilt to their eyes. And the sky, while blue and beautiful, has scratches and mars. Yup, something seems very strange in this image. You can check out the full artwork below.

The follow-up to 2006’s There Be Squabbles Ahead, Naught has a fall release date via No Comment Records.

Stolen Babies will be on the Epic Kings & Idols Tour with Devin Townsend, Katatonia, and Paradise Lost. Tour dates and artwork can be found below.

In continuing our collaboration with artist Crab Scrambly, it was really important to us to create something our fans would want to keep staring at while they caress and possibly fondle it’s smooth exterior… not something easily done to a downloadable mp3, I must note,” states bassist Rani Sharone. “We hope this album cover brings plenty of candy coated smiles to the masses and even more warm and fuzzy feelings when they see the rest of this little gem that is the album’s packaging. Naught is our mutant, not so well behaved second full-length studio album and we look forward to its release!

In anticipation of their upcoming ninth studio album Dead End Kings (out Aug. 28th via Peaceville Records), Swedish melodic metal band Katatonia have released a tour promo video that uses a sample of a new song, “Lethean”, as the backdrop. Personally speaking, I cannot WAIT for this album! I’ve been a fan of Katatonia for over 10 years and a new album from them is a reason for much celebration. Also, “Dead Letters” and this sample are convincing me that I might have a contender for Album of the Year. What are your thoughts?

It is becoming more and more apparent with each passing day that the quality of music that can come from a home studio can equal, if not surpass, what professional studios offer. Bands and artists have access to plug-ins and effects that would boggle the mind of the music industry not even a decade ago. Such is the case with unsigned band The Omega Experiment’s self-titled debut album. Built as an outlet for mastermind Dan Wieten’s troubles with addiction, this prog/djent metal album is a slick, fantastic sounding album. But does it have substance behind the glossy mask?

The album opens with The Gift, a six-minute track that mixes gratuitous vocal harmonies with positive, almost joyous heavy guitar riffing. Sprinkles of piano pepper the background, popping forth into the foreground here and there. It’s a perfect song to set the tone for the album.
As the songs progress, the theme of addiction and recovery become more and more apparent. The music becomes more insane and there are voiceovers of, what I can only assume are, frontman Dan Wieten describing his path in and out of drug addiction. The chaotic whirlwind ending of Tranquility dives immediately into the heavily Devin Townsend-inspired track Furor
The production on this album is top-notch. For an unsigned band to sound this good is pretty much the ultimate slap in the face to the mainstream recording industry. Guitars sound lush, drums sound tight and snappy, and the overall mix is nearly 100% spot on. This is an album that home musicians should look at for inspiration.
The one thing that really stood out to me was the obvious love of Devin Townsend. While I can understand the influence (hell, the man is a musical genius), there were times when the music felt almost derivative rather than homage. I’m hoping that another album will see this band fine tune their own sound.
The Final Word: The Omega Experiment has brought a lot on this self-titled debut. While I’m definitely very impressed, I find that I’m more interested in what the next album will bring.

Devin Townsend has just released a video for Juular, which comes off Deconstruction, the third in the Devin Townsend Project quadrilogy. The video shows Devin hopping onto a train that looks very much like the one in Alice: Madness Returns (no, seriously, check it out here) and dealing with a very upset older gentleman who apparently has the lungs of an ox. Oh, and make sure to keep an eye out for a special cameo appearance of Ziltoid!

2010 was the first full year of Bloody-Disgusting Music and it’s been one hell of a ride. We’ve worked hard to bring you readers contests, exclusives, reviews, originals and more, all because of our love of music and horror. For me personally, I’ve gotten to hang out with some of the coolest musicians, listen to great albums and write about what I love. Because of all of this, here is a random list of personal favorites from this year in Bloody Disgusting Music.

Interviews

Exclusive Audio Interview: Oderus Urungus ‘Gwar’

This was probably the funniest interview I’ve done in a long time. It took everything I had to not laugh the whole time. Cheers Oderus for not breaking character even on the phone.

Exclusive Interview: Devin Townsend

This interview will always hold a special place in my heart not because of what went on during the interview, but from what happened once the recording equipment went off. Devin asked me a couple of questions and it turned into a 30 minute discussion about anything and everything where nothing was taboo or risque. It was a really amazing experience that I’ll always remember.

BD Exclusive Interview: Missing In Action

This one was awesome because I was actually in Israel at a metal festival when I interviewed these guys. Here’s hoping I’ll be at Wacken in the next year or two!

Exclusive Interview: Ronan Harris of VNV Nation

Upon introducing myself to Ronan, he grabbed my hand and shook it almost violently. He proclaimed that he loved Bloody-Disgusting and he was so honored that we wanted to interview him. So that was pretty awesome. Then he said that the club that I most frequently attend has no equal among all the clubs he’s been to in the world. Yeah, double awesome. Plus his love of horror is great.

Bloody Disgusting Exclusive Interview With Mikael From Dark Tranquillity

This was my first real BIG interview. I was at a large venue, there were tour busses, stage hands everywhere and it was an almost overwhelming experience. So imagine my surprise when Mikael turns out to be one of the coolest, most down-to-Earth guys I’ve ever met. This interview taught me that 99% of rock stars I meet are everyday people who are always eager to have a little chat.

Top 10’s

Exclusive: Saving Abel ‘Top 10 Horror Sex Scenes’!

Say whatever you want about Saving Abel, but this list was hilarious! Leave it to these guys to not only pick that as their Top 10, but also turn it completely on it’s head and make it a complete joke. Definitely one of my favorite Top 10’s that I got to post.

Top 10 Horror Movies: Jon Dobyns of Twitch The Ripper

This was easily the most impressive Top 10 Horror Movie list that we posted. Rather than stick to the usual picks, Jon picked a list of obscure, often classic films that many of you admitted to never having heard of.

Album Reviews

Album Review – KARNIVOOL’s Sound Awake

This was one of the few albums that once I heard it, I had to write a review immediately! I was so excited about this album that I needed to share my thoughts with you readers at once. I still love this album and come back to it constantly.

Album Review: Dr. Acula ‘Social Event Of The Century’

My first really negative review. There were those of you who were really upset with my rating, but you know what? I stand by it to this day. Plus, it’s kinda fun writing a scathing review.

Retro Review: At The Gates ‘Slaughter Of The Soul’

This wasn’t the first retro review, but it was the first one where I had readers submit their recommendations for what should come. Also, it was the start of the monthly serial, which is a lot of fun to do.

Retro Review: Portishead ‘Dummy’

The second serialized retro review, this one felt really important to me as it showed that BD Music does not only cover rock and metal. We’re open to expanding our musical news to cover what is appropriate and what resonates with you, the readers. And it showed: This was one of the most popular retro reviews we’ve posted so far.

Album Review: TesseracT ‘Concealing Fate EP’

Another album that I just HAD to review the moment I was done spinning it a few times. To say that I’m excited for their debut LP ‘One’ is an understatement: It is officially my most anticipated release of 2011.

Video Releases

NSFW Exclusive Video Premiere: Cephalic Carnage ‘Ohrwurm’

How could this not end up here? You knew it was coming, I knew it was coming, so here it is. This video was easily one of the highest viewed articles of 2010 and for very good reason: gore, nudity, sex, violence. Basically it had everything that makes the Internet such a wonderful place.

BD Exclusive Music Video: 3 Inches Of Blood ‘Silent Killer’

Great song with a hilariously gory video. What’s not to love?

Exclusive Video Premiere: Nevermore ‘Emptiness Unobstructed’

Nevermore has long been one of my favorite bands, so to be able to debut the first video off of their latest album, ‘The Obsidian Conspiracy’, was a big honor for me.

Exclusive Premiere for Finntroll’s ‘Under Bergets Rot’ Music Video!

This video is just plain fun to watch! The music is really catchy and the visuals are very engaging. If you haven’t checked it out yet, now is as good a time as any other!

As a closing message to this article, I want to take a moment to thank you, the readers. Without you, we wouldn’t keep this going. I personally read every comment and respond to every email, so keep commenting and keep submitting story ideas. Your voice is heard.

Longtime Roadrunner Records recording artist Soulfly, lead by metal titan Max Cavalera, has announced a string of winter tour dates that will bring the band to eleven cities beginning in November.

This is Soulfly’s first tour since the release of the seventh album, Omen, which features appearances by famed guests like Dillinger Escape Plan’s Greg Puciato and Prong’s Tommy Victor.  Alternative Press said “longtime fans of Cavalera’s brand of primitive crunch will love Omen…” while Revolver said Omen is “harder, angrier and catchier than its predecessors.”

Hailed as one of the best unsigned bands from everyone from the Washington Post to UK’s Rock Sound magazine, TesseracT are pleased to finally shed the “unsigned” tag as they announce a worldwide recording deal with Century Media Records.  The band comments:

“TesseracT is very excited to be working with Century Media. We have been looking for a long time and have spoken to many companies but feel that the hard work ethic and enthusiasm that Century Media showed will help take us to the next level and will see TesseracT emerge from the underground and on to the international scene.”

TesseracT has spent the last year finalizing their debut album, One, which was produced by band mates, Acle Kahney and Amos Williams. With constant support from the UK media, TesseracT has been able to achieve a loyal following in their home country as well as the rest of Europe, having their video for Concealing Fate Part II in constant rotation on Scuzz TV and other media outlets. They’ve toured throughout the UK and EU playing everything from clubs to festivals and last spring made it over to Russia for the first of what will surely be many stops. Their international touring plans continue as they are pleased to announce they were invited as special guests on Devin Townsend’s North American West Coast run.

“For TesseracT to be on the road with Devin Townsend is just unbelievable for us. From his work with Steve Vai to the craziness of SYL and all the way through to his latest solo albums, he’s always been way out there, pushing the boundaries of modern rock and metal and has been a constant in cutting edge music. It’ll be a great opportunity for us to watch and learn from a very creative and accomplished musician and song writer. We cannot wait for October to come!”

Formed in 2003 as a solo writing project in the mind of guitarist Acle (who was a founding member in Fell Silent) TesseracT first broke through in the scene with their 2007 demo and later appearances at UK’s Bloodstock, Hammerfest, Caos Emergente in Portugal and the  Hellfire 2 festival at the Birmingham NEC arena. TesseracT soon became one of the most talked about bands among musicians and tech-heads, thanks to the quintet’s time signatures and musical complexity.  TesseracT are far from an exclusionary exercise in tech metal pomposity though. They fully embrace their experimental, prog sensibility without excessive indulgence or pretentiousness, delivering atmospheric, metallic songs that stir strong emotions and evoke powerful mental images.
TesseracT is:
Acle Kahney – Guitars
Amos Williams – Bass
Dan Tompkins – Vocals
Jay Postones – Drums
James Monteith – Guitars
TesseracT 2010 North American Tour Dates, special guest to Devin Townsend
10/8 – Vancouver – Rickshaw
10/9 – Seattle – Studio Seven
10/10 – Portland – Hawthorne
10/12 – San Fran – Slim’s
10/14 – Los Angeles – Key Club
10/15 – San Diego – Ramona
10/16 – Las Vegas – Cheyenne

Addicted (review HERE) was released in Nov. 2009 and has become his fastest selling solo record in his career. Townsend is currently working on two new albums for 2011. The new, mind-blowing offering, Addicted, was met with worldwide critical praise and scored very impressive first week numbers debuting at #168 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and #2 on the Billboard Heatseakers chart.

Townsend further states: “Sitting here at the airport after months of preparation for the European festivals, getting this material ready to be heard the way it’s meant to be heard has been a pretty mean task. Last night’s epic rehearsal was one of those moments when you realize the work put into making it right results in an awesome sound. I have been given the opportunity now to bring this music to North America in my first ever solo headlining tour. It’s not a huge tour, but I really would appreciate seeing some of the familiar faces and hopefully some new ones as well. It’s cheesy to announce your touring plans as ‘the biggest or best’ of anything, but I love this music, we’ve worked really hard to get it right. If you’re one of the folks that dig it, then this should be a great, heavy and fun time that sounds the way it should.

“I’m honored to be able to play for you after all these years. There’s a ton of great tours coming up, and here is my contribution. Rock the fuck out, stay positive.”

One of metal’s most intriguing, ominous and immensely talented figures, the mighty Devin Townsend, just completed an extremely successful North American trek with genre visionaries Between The Buried and Me, Cynic and Scale The Summit. This was Townsend’s first tour in a number of years and the first in support of his new, mind-blowing offering, Addicted, that was met with worldwide critical praise and scored very impressive first week numbers debuting at #168 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and #2 on the Billboard Heatseakers chart.

Townsend checks in with the following report in regards to the success of the tour and his plans for the remainder of the year. He states: “Tour one in the can! Man, what a heck of an experience. I had gone back into touring with a certain amount of trepidation. ‘will I flake? Can I do this without the ‘persona? Is this life going to wipe me out?’ but as is with most things, you never know until you’re ‘in it’.
“After a week of tumultuous shows (click tracks through front of house, monitor problems, broken guitars, etc.) I began to realize that really NOTHING has changed since Ozzfest for me. I’m still the same cheeseball performer, but now my voice is clear and I have the realization that I am honored to do this, and I really missed it. I love playing for people, and to finally represent all the emotions that go into my work, as opposed to just one or two is a dream come true and one that I don’t take lightly.

“The audiences were great, supportive and forgiving of the initial technical glitches. The opportunity to connect with folks who have supported me for so long is an incredibly rewarding experience. The tour itself was magnificent with many shows that were sold out or close to it, and for my ‘reintroduction’ to the touring life, I could not have asked for better people to share the experience with.

“I recorded a ton of the shows and I am mixing the best one right now for release later this month. It will be our New York show, as well as my upcoming acoustic show in Redmond, Washington (Feb 27th and it’s free show folks!) these two events will be on a new disk out next month for cheap as a testament to what I’m doing now and the seriousness of where it wants to go (The moon!!!)

“Now, we head to Australia for our first headline run. Ocean Machine, Infinity, Physicist, Ki, Addicted, AE, Synchestra, Ziltoid. BRING IT! Then, we go to Europe for a mess of high profile festivals, interspersed with headline shows and a special, one off world exclusive of the Ziltoid album in its entirety at the Tuska festival in Finland. BRING IT!

“I am also in talks with some sick musicians not only for the next album, Deconstruction, but also some very interesting side projects. It’s very flattering. I hope it works out, but even if not, it will be great for the ‘hang factor’.

“Next, we are in talks for a serious headlining tour through America in October. It’s the same idea as Australia, a lengthy set pulling out all the stops. America is wonderful, and the amount of support extended to me on this last run is again, incredibly flattering. I viewed the BTBAM tour as almost an ‘advertisement’ for the future tours, and I’ve been very fortunate to have been picked up by The Agency group throughout North America, and I can’t wait to give you folks a REAL show!

Deconstruction and Ghost are basically finished, and the musicians are for the most part lined up, but I’m one thing at a time and I’m currently focusing on making the live shows as good as they can be, but when the October tour is done, I’m putting three months aside for these albums…and hopefully they will be released simultaneously next May. Deconstruction is truly a ‘tour-de-force’ and Ghost is the perfect compliment, but until I get time they are archived in notes and awaiting the moment.

“I will be doing various acoustic shows/Q+A sessions over the next year as well and I’m also working on a big hometown Vancouver show. I love where I live, and I want it to be special. Peavey released my signature 7 string V at NAMM, and that company is awesome for me. I can’t thank them enough. Their guitars are among the best ones I’ve used in my career, and they have some serious surprises in store for us all. Check out my PXD ‘Vicious V’ on tour. I love it.

“Anyways that’s where I’m at. The NY show goes to mastering tonight and I can’t wait for you to hear it. After three years off, I realize how totally fortunate I am to have the opportunity to play for you, and I don’t take that lightly. See you soon! Be well folks, strive to be happy…and always remember: ‘Worse shit has happened to better people!”
