It’s been 75 years since The Thing From Another World first warned us to “watch the skies”, and filmgoers have done just that by showing up to multiple instances of extraterrestrial contact on the big screen. This makes sense, as a recent CBS news poll estimated that 63% of Americans believe in intelligent life on other planets, and the ongoing disclosure movement aims to raise that number with each passing day.

With Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day leaving many genre fans hungry for more alien footage (preferably of the spooky variety), today I’d like to share a list recommending six underrated alien invasion thrillers for your viewing pleasure. After all, regardless of whether or not you believe that we’re alone in the universe, it can be fun to dream about the worst-case scenario if our cosmic neighbors ever decide to visit.

For the purposes of this list, we’ll be focusing on lesser-known invasion stories rather than the popular extraterrestrials of franchises like Alien and Close Encounters of the Third (or even Fourth) Kind. That being said, don’t forget to comment below with your own alien favorites if you think we missed a particularly thrilling movie.

While it won’t be featured in this article, I’d highly recommend checking out Dean Alioto’s UFO Abduction/The McPherson Tape if you’re up for some ufology-inspired found footage thrills.

With that out of the way, onto the list!

6. The Arrival (1996)

Not to be confused with Denis Villeneuve’s Academy Award-winning Amy Adams vehicle about learning to communicate peacefully with extraterrestrial life, David Twohy’s The Arrival is a much more straightforward (but no less entertaining) genre romp where Charlie Sheen faces a global conspiracy involving hostile alien invaders.

It’s not exactly up there with Close Encounters or even Independence Day, but Twohy’s conspiratorial thriller plays out like an exceptionally fun episode of The X-Files that I’d recommend to sci-fi/horror fans who don’t mind a little bit of wonky CGI and 90s excess alongside their alien thrills.

5. Extraterrestrial (2014)

The Vicious Brothers made a name for themselves with the success of 2011’s Grave Encounters, but that was far from the Canadian duo’s only collaboration. And while it’s not exactly a fan favorite, I always point out 2014’s Extraterrestrial as one of their most underrated projects simply because I agree with the filmmakers’ opinion that there aren’t enough ‘cool alien abduction movies’ out there.

Admittedly, the majority of the picture functions like a run-of-the-mill creature feature with paper-thin characters and familiar horror tropes, but I’d argue that the cosmically-terrifying final act elevates the experience to new and memorable heights. The movie also boasts great performances by both Michael Ironside and Emily Perkins – a combination that more than makes up for the occasionally janky CGI.

4. Alien Raiders (2008)

Alien Raiders

Director Ben Rock has gone on record lamenting how his John-Carpenter-inspired creature feature was forcefully renamed from Supermarket to the painfully obvious Alien Raiders (a change which likely resulted in many potential viewers skipping out on the experience), but the new title doesn’t change the fact that this single-location thriller is something of a hidden gem.

Taking place entirely within a supermarket, Alien Raiders tells the story of an ensemble of customers and employees who are taken hostage by a group of armed men looking for something far more dangerous than an easy payout. I won’t get into details in order to avoid spoiling the experience, but I’d highly recommend this criminally underseen flick to fans of John Carpenter and the Resident Evil games.

3. Phoenix Forgotten (2017)

You’d think that a Ridley-Scott-produced retelling of one of the most infamous real-life UFO sightings of all time would have a bigger following, but I rarely see Justin Barber’s Found Footage period piece brought up during discussions about extraterrestrial-focused horror movies.

This is a huge shame, as Phoenix Forgotten is just as spooky as it is convincing, with this well-researched dive into the Phoenix Lights incident benefiting from surprisingly believable special effects as well as an appropriately horrific finale.

2. Communion (1989)

I wouldn’t blame you for disregarding Whitley Strieber’s controversial book about his alleged close encounter as sensationalist slop, but I’d argue that Phillipe Mora’s 1989 adaptation of these events is much better than the source material. After all, the movie works as a standalone piece of speculative fiction while also benefiting from an incredible performance by the one and only Christopher Walken!

Mora’s take on Communion may not be particularly scary, but the film is still an unforgettable character study regardless of whether or not the abduction really happened. Not only that, but the flick also paved the way for plenty of future sci-fi stories where the extraterrestrial invaders aren’t as evil as they initially appear.

1. Altered (2006)

Originally envisioned as a Sam Raimi-style horror-comedy titled Probed, Eduardo Sánchez (of The Blair Witch Project fame) eventually realized that it would be much more interesting to turn the film into a serious exploration of the emotional aftermath of a traumatic abduction incident.

That’s how we got Altered, a clever inversion of the standard abduction narrative that follows a group of troubled friends as they capture and experiment on an alien in order to enact revenge for their own abduction years prior.

Note: This article contains mild spoilers for Disclosure Day.

In the post-World War II era, Hollywood began to take science fiction seriously. This genre that was once relegated to low-budget serials and dismissed aschildren’s farewas beginning to be understood as a way to tell sophisticated stories while simultaneously making pointed social and political commentary.

Writers and filmmakers became acutely aware that they could discuss whatever issues they wanted—race, nuclear war, class disparities, the effects of mass media, environmental concerns, and much more—just as long as they told a great story along the way and kept audiences entertained. 1951 was a banner year for this new brand of science fiction, with The Thing from Another World, When Worlds Collide, and The Day the Earth Stood Still all hitting the screen.

The Day the Earth Stood Still taps into early 1950’s flying saucer fever while also examining who we are and, more importantly, who we could be. The premise of the film is simple. A flying saucer lands on a baseball field adjacent to the White House in Washington, D.C. A man named Klaatu (Michael Rennie) steps out of the vehicle and declares that he comes in peace but is immediately met by fear and violence. Gort (Lock Martin), the robot that accompanies him, vaporizes the weapons, including tanks and artillery, that the military has brought to surround the ship, a display that forces Klaatu into hiding. When he is finally able to deliver his message, it is a warning.

Klaatu and his people have observed that humanity’s violent tendencies are beginning to reach beyond the confines of planet Earth and threaten its intergalactic neighbors.Your choice is simple,Klaatu declares, join us and live in peace or pursue your present course and face obliteration.

Connections Between The Day the Earth Stood Still and Disclosure Day

In the film, this obliteration would come at the hands, or vaporizing beam, of Gort, a kind of intergalactic enforcer, but in the real world, the threat comes from within. Though the film appears to be athe threat is out therepicture at first blush, it is actually awe are the monstersmovie. It makes this point in several ways, most of which remain shockingly relevant seventy-five years after the film’s original release.

Though The Day the Earth Stood Still was released at the dawn of the television revolution, it was practically prophetic in depicting the ways that mass media would be used and abused in times of uncertainty and crisis. News reports quickly evolve from reporting facts to spreading fear about the visitors and spinning out wild conspiracy theories. Newspapers print images of Gort attacking people as they run screaming, though up to that point, he had only destroyed weapons and left humans unharmed. A radio announcer declares Klaatu to be a monster that must be hunted down like a rabid animal and destroyed. Rumors quickly spread that he, though completely human in appearance, has tentacles and three eyes.

The film’s commentary on mass media personally made me reflect further on my recent viewing of Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day (2026) and its depictions of media, which are surprisingly less cynical than those found in The Day the Earth Stood Still. In both films, there is a trust in the information sources, something that was largely true in the early 1950s, but Spielberg’s depiction that people would believe the evidence of their eyes and ears is viewed by some as naïve. I must admit my own reluctance to believe this would be the case in our age of deep-fakes and the barrage of A.I.-generated images that flood social media. I would love to believe that he is right, and the world would literally stand still in rapt attention as a major network reveals such long-hidden secrets, but I am doubtful.

Even in The Day the Earth Stood Still, there is a sense of this cynicism. Klaatu is told by Mr. Harley (Frank Conroy), the President’s special secretary, that gathering the leaders of the countries of the world in one place would be impossible. He produces messages in which the Soviet Premier demands the meeting occur in Moscow, while the Prime Minister of Britain refuses to attend unless it is held in Washington. Though the people of Earth seem to believe that an alien has in fact landed, proving that we are not alone in the universe, they still cannot put aside petty squabbles to hear what Klaatu has to say. I hate to say it, but I believe this still rings true in our increasingly divided nation and world.

In order to gain the attention of the world, Klaatu consults a scientist, Professor Barnhardt (Sam Jaffe), who admits that people are reluctant to listen to scientists, a point that has unfortunately become increasingly true in the ensuing years. Barnhardt suggests that Klaatu perform a display of power that does not hurt any humans to convince influential people from around the world to hear his message. Klaatu devises a plan to literally make the earth stand still by suspending power of all kinds—electrical, mechanical, combustion, etc.—for exactly half an hour at the same time across the entire globe. The exceptions are just as remarkable: hospitals, airplanes in flight, and other vital operations. But still, despite the care he takes not to harm anyone, the fear of Klaatu and Gort only increases.

Klaatu as Science Fiction’s Christ Figure

A powerful detail of The Day the Earth Stood Still is that the first visitor to our planet from another world is very much like us. After Klaatu is injured by a frightened soldier who thinks a gift to the people of the world is a weapon, he is taken for examination at Walter Reed Hospital. This examination reveals that he is essentially human in every way. His organs all function the same as a healthy young man’s, indicating that his planet has a similar atmosphere and pressure. The differences are just as striking. Though he appears to be in his mid-30’s, Klaatu is 78 years old, and his people have a life expectancy of 130 years along with a vastly superior intellect.

He is proof that humans are capable of bettering themselves by living in peace with one another. Rather than expending energy on war, destruction, and the pursuit of money and power, Klaatu’s people have focused on reason, mathematics, and sciences. Though not mentioned in the film, I imagine (or hope) that they also value history, the arts, and all those pursuits that we would callthe humanities. To make this point inescapable, the film depicts Klaatu as an ideal to strive for, even a kind of Christ figure: a teacher of peace who is killed, resurrects, delivers one final message to those gathered to listen, and ascends back into the heavens.

To draw another Spielberg parallel, there are hints of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) in The Day the Earth Stood Still, including these Christlike parallels. After escaping Walter Reed, Klaatu, posing as Mr. Carpenter (see what they did there?), befriends a young boy, Bobby Benson (Billy Gray), whose father, like Elliot’s in E.T., is absent, in this case, killed in the War. Klaatu eventually reveals who he is to Bobby’s mother, Helen (Patricia Neal), who assists him in escaping back to his ship. Klaatu, worried that Gort will destroy the city or even more if he is harmed, tells Helen to deliver the famous wordsKlaatu Barada Niktoto Gort if anything should happen to him.

Klaatu is shot and taken to a jail cell, where he is declared dead. Gort, sensing Klaatu has been harmed, vaporizes the two soldiers guarding the ship and is about to continue his rampage when Helen, though fearful, is able to deliver the words to stop him (it’s a good thing she wasn’t Ash Williams). Gort brings Helen aboard the ship before retrieving Klaatu’s body from the cell. Back on the ship, Klaatu is revived by a medical device and delivers his ultimatum to the leaders of the world.

Why Klaatu’s Warning Still Matters Today

There has been much discourse about the final word uttered in Disclosure Day by Emily Blunt’s character Margaret Fairchild—Listen. But I believe The Day the Earth Stood Still poses a similar challenge. After giving the option of peace or obliteration, Klaatu says,We shall be waiting for your answer. The decision rests with you, leaving humankind to rest in the conundrum.

Where Disclosure Day requests, The Day the Earth Stood Still demands, but I fear its demand has fallen on deaf ears. We have continued to seek power over peace, wars and rumors of wars have only increased, and as Klaatu says in the film, we have continued tosubstitute fear for reason.

The Day the Earth Stood Still does not come across as a cynical film, though I fear I have painted it as such. There is a great amount of hope in it. It is filled with characters like Bobby, Helen, and Professor Barnhardt who seem to truly believe that a better world can be achieved. But then there is also Tom (Hugh Marlowe), Helen’s fiancé, who believes turning in Klaatu will bring him power and political position. Mr. Harley, and by extension the President of the United States and the political powers of the world, believe that the systems are too entrenched and the problems of the world too complex for peace to ever happen.

Maybe the deeper question of both films is, can we evolve? If faced with the revelation of truth beyond ourselves, or with an ultimatum of peace or oblivion, can we finally believe that it is possible to unite and be one human family?

That is the ultimate power of The Day the Earth Stood Still. Science Fiction and its sister genre, horror (which practically blended into one in the 1950s), have an uncanny ability to, as I said before, show us who we are, but also who we could be. Day asks us if we are willing to make the hard choices to achieve something greater, to become the best version of ourselves. Not to achieve perfection but strive toward that mark as closely as imperfect beings possibly can.

The answers are not simple, and the methods are challenging, even divisive. The process has been and will continue to be long and difficult, but the ultimate goals may not be as disparate from our neighbors as they seem. Perhaps the first step in that process is exactly as Margaret in Disclosure Day says, listen. And even more, to make the conscious choice to listen.

As Klaatu declares, the decision indeed rests with us.

Steven Spielberg has always been conversant in the cinematic language of the horror genre, despite relatively few credits in the genre. His contributions as a writer and producer on things like Poltergeist are legendary, and films like Duel and Jaws certainly wield the horror genre in remarkable, often chilling ways. He may not be a horror filmmaker, but he knows when he needs to scare us, and he has the tools to make that happen.

I didn’t go into Disclosure Day, Spielberg’s alien epic, expecting outright horror, and indeed the film leans much more into thrilling than frightening. This is not a horror film, but for a few minutes in the middle, much to my surprise, it became one.

Spielberg has filmed more than his fair share of scary scenes over the years, but with Disclosure Day, he directed a new contender for the scariest scene of his entire career.

SPOILERS AHEAD for Disclosure Day!

Josh O’Connor in DISCLOSURE DAY, directed by Steven Spielberg.

Among the various alien secrets laced throughout Disclosure Day are a trio of palm-sized rods, the color of pencil graphite. These rods, originating from another planet, can be used for a number of things, but for the purposes of this scene, the most important is “diving,” gripping the rod in one bare hand and using its power to “dive” into the mind of another person.

The person holding the rod in this scene is Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth), head of shadowy cybersecurity firm Wordex, who is hellbent on keeping human knowledge of extraterrestrials secret from the general public. Scanlon’s trying to find whistleblower Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor), who’s got all of those alien secrets tucked in a backpack while he’s on the run, and while Daniel’s more experienced mind is protected from diving, his girlfriend Jane’s (Eve Hewson) is not. So, monitored by medical personnel at Wordex headquarters (diving is dangerous), Scanlon pushes his way into Jane’s mind to find the location of Daniel’s safe house.

A telepathic invasion is scary enough on its own, but Spielberg doesn’t stop there. When Scanlon dives into Eve’s mind, he appears to her to be sitting across the kitchen table, like he’s in the room. Her bright blue eyes turn Scanlon’s dark brown, and she loses much of her control over her own body, not to mention her mind. Moments before, Daniel finally shared with her the secrets in his backpack, so Jane is shocked, conflicted, deeply vulnerable when Scanlon slips inside her head. This is not just telepathy. This is possession.

Spielberg underscores this not just through the visual language of the scene, as Jane breaks out in a sweat and struggles to sit upright as Scanlon invades her mind, but through Jane’s background. As she revealed to Daniel earlier in the film, Jane is a former novitiate nun who left her convent when she began to question her calling. She still believes firmly in God and, more importantly, believes that perhaps proof of alien life should be kept secret from the public because, in her eyes, it would upset the entire balance of faith in the world. God is a defining factor for humankind, Jane argues, and showing humanity proof of creatures from the stars would undercut that in dangerous ways.

This context, combined with the crucifix necklace Jane’s holding in her hand at the time of the dive, makes this scene the closest thing Spielberg will ever shoot to something out of The Exorcist. It’s not just a battle of wills, but a battle of faith. As an amoral technocrat worms his way into her memories, her beliefs, her faith, Jane turns the crucifix into a weapon, squeezing it until her hand bleeds when she discovers that a pain response can momentarily push Scanlon out of her head.

Of course, when you put a crucifix and a bloody hand together, it conjures images of stigmata. Screenwriter David Koepp pushes the allusion further by having Scanlon quote Christ on the cross to Jane by way of convincing her that she must be the one to stop Daniel by any means necessary.

It’s easy to see why this is scary, right?

On a very basic level, you have a powerful, wealthy man subduing and assaulting an innocent young woman, which is frightening enough. Then, the layers of the scene kick in. Scanlon doesn’t just assault Jane, but possesses her, seizes her memories, her knowledge, and finally her own free will, all while Jane literally clings to her faith in an effort to fight back. Disclosure Day is, among other things, a story about who has a right to the truth, and Scanlon believes that he should be the arbiter of that truth. Not just the truth as he sees it, but the truth as Jane sees it as well. If they don’t see eye to eye, he’ll make her.

But the possession, as it turns out, cuts both ways. Using the rod to dive is, for a normal human being, an intensely strenuous process. Scanlon admits that previous attempts almost killed him, and for some members of his time, so much as touching the rod results in a near-death experience. Even accessing an unprepared mind like Jane’s takes a lot of Scanlon, and when she kicks him out by squeezing the crucifix – again, so much meaning embedded in the details here – his team holds him back and tries to offer medical intervention. But Scanlon persists, pushing them away, and keeps diving back in.

This means that Jane can’t escape him because he just won’t stop pushing back through her defenses, but it also means that each time Scanlon enters her mind, and thus the safe house, he looks more monstrous. By the end, through a combination of lighting and makeup, Firth barely looks human, conjuring up images of the possessed Father Karras at the end of The Exorcist.

Colin Firth (center, standing) in DISCLOSURE DAY, directed by Steven Spielberg.

On a pure, visceral craft level, all of this is quite frightening, but the real trick to making this scene into Spielberg’s most terrifying lies in the more existential horror surrounding all of this. Disclosure Day is a film about the battle for the truth over extraterrestrials, but it’s also about a fight against an impossibly powerful surveillance state, the devaluing of human and alien lives in favor of some nebulous collection of assets, and the value of the individual in a world that increasingly lumps people into demographic boxes and writes them off.

In this scene, the surveillance state becomes supernatural, a human life is worth less than a piece of information, and an extragovernmental technocrat would rather sacrifice his own humanity than see reason. In 2026, few things could be more terrifying than that. Spielberg knows this and wields it mightily, proving once again that, while he’s not a strictly horror filmmaker, he can direct horror with the best of them.

Disclosure Day is in theaters now.

This week’s new releases offer everything from giant monsters to Spielberg aliens to ass-kicking martial artists and even an ash-eating medical student. Do we have your interest?

Here’s all the new genre movies that released on Friday, June 12, 2026!

These aren’t all HORROR movies, but we want you to be aware of them all the same…

Norwegian creature feature Kraken is now available on Digital.

The film was also unleashed in select theaters. Check your local listings.

In the monster movie Kraken, “unnatural behavior in wild salmon, followed by inexplicable deaths in Norway’s deepest fjord, points to the mythical Kraken. The ancient, multi-armed monster has awakened, ready to crush everything that moves or makes a sound.”

Pål Øie (The Tunnel) directs Samuel Goldwyn Films’ Kraken from a script by Vilde Eide, Kjersti Jelen Rasmussen, and Natasha Arthur. Sara Khorami, Mikkel Bratt Silset, Øyvind Brandtzæg, Jenny Evensen, Ingvild Holthe Bygdnes, Jon Erik Myre, Hans Morten Hansen, Steinar Klouman Hallert, and Filip Bargee Ramberg star.

An all girls trip into the desert for escapism fun instead implodes in violence in the revenge thriller Find Your Friends, now streaming only on Shudder.

In the film, “Amber and her four best friends flee Los Angeles for a girls’ trip in Joshua Tree, only to find themselves unwelcome in a desert town simmering with quiet hostility. As isolation sets in and encounters with aggressive locals grow more threatening, festering resentments within the group begin to surface.

“What begins as fun and reckless escape spirals into a violent struggle for control and survival, as past wounds and present dangers collide in a night that turns their trip into a nightmare.”

Bella Thorne (The Babysitter), Chloe Cherry (“Euphoria”), Helena Howard (I Saw the TV Glow), Sophia Ali (Uncharted), Zion Moreno (“Gossip Girl”), and Chris Bauer (“True Blood”) star in the feature debut by writer/director Izabel Pakzad.

Steven Spielberg is more sure today than he was when he made Close Encounters and ET that aliens are very real, and with Disclosure Day, he aims to make you a believer too.

Okay so it’s not a horror movie, but the sci-fi blockbuster is now playing in theaters.

The vague synopsis for Disclosure Day reads: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to Disclosure Day.”

The film stars SAG winner and Oscar® nominee Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place), Emmy and Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor (Challengers, The Crown), Oscar® winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, Kingsman franchise), Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters, The Perfect Couple) and two-time Oscar® nominee Colman Domingo (Sing Sing, Rustin).

Based on a story by Spielberg, the screenplay is by David Koepp, whose previous work with Spielberg includes the scripts for Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Combined, those films earned more than $3 billion worldwide. Koepp also wrote the script for Jurassic World Rebirth.

Steven Spielberg is of course no stranger to extraterrestrial encounters, directing two of the greatest alien movies of all time: Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1977 and E.T. in 1982. It’s an arena he returned to in 2005, directing an adaptation of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds.

Here in 2026, Steven Spielberg sees hope in the existence of aliens. He notes in the final trailer for Disclosure Day, “How will disclosure change us? I believe for the better.”

Another movie that’s not a horror movie but worth mentioning here is the violent martial arts revenge thriller The Furious, which is now playing in theaters from Lionsgate.

Xie Miao (The New Legend of Shaolin) and Joe Taslim (Mortal Kombat) star.

After his daughter is kidnapped by a criminal network and he receives no help from the corrupt police, Wang Wei sets out on a rampage to find her himself.

His only ally is Navin, a relentless journalist whose wife has mysteriously disappeared. Fueled by a furious vengeance, the unlikely duo ruthlessly fights against the kidnappers.

Kenji Tanigaki (Enter the Fat Dragon) directs from a script by Mak Tin Shu (Kung Fu Jungle), Lei ZhilongShum Kwan Sin (Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In), and Frank Hui.

A disturbing weight loss craze involving human ashes opens up a haunting world of hurt for a young woman in Saccharine, which is now available on Digital outlets at home.

From writer/director Natalie Erika James (RelicApartment 7A), the Australian supernatural body horror film follows lovelorn medical student Hana, who becomes terrorized by a sinister force after taking part in an obscure weight loss craze: eating human ashes.

Midori Francis (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Danielle Macdonald (Patti Cake$), and Madeleine Madden (“The Wheel of Time”) star in Natalie Erika James’ latest nightmare.

From directors Arturo Ambriz and Roy AmbrizI Am Frankelda is billed as the first ever full length stop motion movie from Mexico, and it’s now streaming on Netflix.

The history-making stop-motion film is a dark fantasy set in a world of monsters.

Here’s the synopsis: “In 19th-century Mexico, Frankelda is a gifted writer whose dark tales are ignored and dismissed. Forced to suppress her voice, she refuses to give up, even as many try to silence her. But when she is thrust into her subconscious, the very monsters she created come to life.

“Guided by Herneval, a tormented prince trapped between dreams and nightmares, she must restore balance between fiction and reality before both realms collapse. Meanwhile, the sinister writer Procustes and his conspirators plot to seize control. As Frankelda and Herneval grow closer, their bond becomes both a strength and a curse.

“To rewrite their fate, she must confront a love that defies existence and reclaim her power as a storyteller—before dark forces consume her imagination and reveal horrors beyond her creation.”

The directors said in a joint statement, “As brothers, we grew up inventing worlds together, drawing, playing, imagining. Over time we understood that fictional characters were not only companions but guides. Sometimes they felt closer than the people around us. They provided us courage, wisdom, and solace. We believe fiction is not an escape from reality but a way of understanding it. A way of converting truth into palatable chunks. I Am Frankelda comes from a lifelong love of storytelling.”

Steven Spielberg is more sure today than he was when he made Close Encounters and ET that aliens are very real, and with Disclosure Day, he aims to make you a believer too.

Watch the Final Trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day below, which features our very first look at one of the extraterrestrial beings you’ll be meeting in the sci-fi blockbuster.

“I used to say to myself, wouldn’t it be wonderful if all of this turned out to be true,” Spielberg explains. “I’m now thinking, wouldn’t it be wonderful for people to know… all of this IS true.”

All will become clear when Disclosure Day invades theaters and IMAX June 12.

David Koepp is one of the highest box-office-generating screenwriters of all time, thanks in no small part to his work on several Steven Spielberg productions — including three Jurassic Park/Jurassic World films, two Indiana Jones movies, and War of the Worlds.

With Disclosure Day, their latest collaboration, Koepp set a new personal record with 42 drafts of the script.

“[Spielberg] was more exacting than I’ve ever seen him because he knows he’s worked in this area before,” Koepp tells Vanity Fair. “He wants this one to be the best one.”

Indeed, Spielberg has been probing the mystery of extraterrestrial life in his films for nearly 50 years, dating back to 1977’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Koepp describes Disclosure Day, which came to him as a 38-page treatment from Spielberg, as a “further exploration” of the themes of Close Encounters and likens it to a ’70s-style paranoid thriller.

“[Koepp]’s a good collaborator because he listens as much to me as I do to him,” Spielberg added, noting that the writer is willing to rework a script “including and often through principal photography.”

In theaters June 12 via Universal, Disclosure Day‘s vague synopsis reads: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to Disclosure Day.”

Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Josh O’Connor (Wake Up Dead Man), Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Eve Hewson (Bridge of Spies), Colman Domingo (The Running Man), and Wyatt Russell (“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”) star.

Spielberg produces for Amblin Entertainment alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger (Ready Player One, The Fabelmans). Adam Somner (Ready Player One, Bridge of Spies) and Chris Brigham (Inception, Shutter Island) executive produce.

Disclosure Day is rated PG-13 for “action/violence, some bloody images, and strong language.”

Koepp is currently writing a new Westworld movie for Warner Bros.

An otherworldly force descends upon the Earth in a new image from Steven Spielberg‘s Disclosure Day, courtesy of EW.

Three other photos show Josh O’Connor (Wake Up Dead Man) as Daniel Kellner, a cyber-security expert on the run after stumbling upon highly-classified information, in the sci-fi film.

O’Connor describes his character as an “unglamorous hero” to EW. “We were trying to create a character that was fairly everyday — sort of an average Joe in some respects.”

He isn’t entirely ordinary, however. “He has this very special talent or skill that he’s almost unaware of — it’s become part of him over time,” O’Connor explains. “And as the film progresses, we start to see where that’s come from.”

O’Connor clarifies, “I think, actually, it’s less about the skills that he has. It’s more about where they came from that’s important.”

Part of that talent is his ability to understand the otherworldly communication delivered by Margaret Fairchild, a journalist-turned-weather presenter at the center of a bizarre on-air incident, played by Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place).

Disclosure Day also stars Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Eve Hewson (Bridge of Spies), Colman Domingo (The Running Man), and Wyatt Russell (“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”).

David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man) penned the script, based on a story by Spielberg.

Spielberg produces for Amblin Entertainment alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger (Ready Player One, The Fabelmans). Adam Somner (Ready Player One, Bridge of Spies) and Chris Brigham (Inception, Shutter Island) executive produce.

Invading theaters and IMAX on June 12Disclosure Day is rated PG-13 for “action/violence, some bloody images, and strong language.”

Following the first alien sighting in last week’s teaser, a new Disclosure Day still from ScreenRant features another close encounter of the third kind.

David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man) penned the script, based on a story by Spielberg.

A new teaser trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day has been shared on social media this afternoon, and it gives us our very first sneak peek at the movie’s extraterrestrial beings.

Check it out below and pause at :25 seconds for an alien sighting…

Steven Spielberg is looking up at the night skies once again with Disclosure Day this summer, and he offered a pretty intriguing tease live on stage at CinemaCon earlier this month.

Discussing Film reported from the event, “Steven Spielberg has revealed that the entire third act of Disclosure Day is being kept out of the marketing.”

Spielberg also said during Universal’s CinemaCon presentation, “I really truly believe that this movie is going to answer questions and cause you to ask a lot of questions.”

He teased, “All you need to get from the beginning to the end (of this movie) is a seatbelt.”

All will become clear when the sci-fi blockbuster invades theaters and IMAX June 12.

The vague synopsis for Disclosure Day reads: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to Disclosure Day.”

The man who invented the Hollywood blockbuster has once again set his sights on the stars.

Steven Spielberg, the director behind Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and so many other classics, is getting set to unleash his next otherworldly epic, Disclosure Day.

The announcement of the film in early 2026 immediately set off internet-wide speculation about the story and tone of the film. While the only way to learn the truth will be buying a ticket and seeing for yourself, Bloody Disgusting has tried to answer some of the most pressing questions about the upcoming film.

Reminder, this is merely an FAQ page for an alien movie. Bloody Disgusting has no official comment on the existence of life throughout the galaxy… or do we?

What We Know: Disclosure Day is an upcoming science-fiction film directed by the man who invented blockbuster storytelling, Steven Spielberg. Details are sparse but the trailers released so far suggest that Spielberg is telling another story about aliens, possibly through the lens of journalists or researchers informing humanity about the existence of life beyond Earth.

For Disclosure Day, Spielberg re-teams with writer David Koepp who also wrote the scripts for Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Some outlets have speculated that this might even be a sequel to Spielberg’s 1977 moody alien thriller Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The only way to find out will be to go see it in theaters June 12, 2026.

Official Synopsis: If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to … Disclosure Day.

At the 2026 South By Southwest Film Festival, Steven Spielberg said, “I don’t know any more than any of you do, but I have a very strong suspicion that we are not alone here on Earth right now — and I made a movie about that.”

Spielberg’s fascination with extraterrestrial life began when he was a child and his father took him to view a meteor shower. Spielberg later became interested in the work of J. Allen Hynek, an astronomer who did consulting work for the U.S. Air Force with regards to the possibility of alien life. The title of Spielberg’s original alien movie, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, comes from Hynek’s book, The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry.

What other alien movies has Steven Spielberg made?
Steven Spielberg’s initial alien movie was 1977’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Spielberg also directed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, an original story about a young boy who meets a friendly alien, and War of the Worlds, an adaptation of H. G. Well’s science-fiction novel from 1898.

Steven Spielberg has been probing the mystery of extraterrestrial life in his films for nearly 50 years, dating back to 1977’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind and continuing through 1982’s E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and 2005’s War of the Worlds.

His latest exploration of these notions takes shape in Disclosure Day.

“There are definitely questions posed by Close Encounters that are answered in Disclosure Day,” star Emily Blunt tells Empire.

“The question has always remained for me: are we alone on our own planet?” comments Spielberg. “I cannot imagine that we are alone out there. That question has not only haunted me, but it has inspired me. But, I think, it has now resolved itself to my satisfaction in Disclosure Day.”

The filmmaker adds, “If I could know, I would want to know. Who would not want to know?”

Empire debuted two new images from the film, pictured below, and divulged new details about the main characters.

Blunt stars as Margaret Fairchild, a journalist-turned-weather presenter at the center of a bizarre on-air incident, as seen in the trailer.

Josh O’Connor plays Daniel Kellner, a cyber-security expert with a target on his back after stumbling upon highly-classified knowledge, with Eve Hewson as his girlfriend, Jane Blakenship, who faces her own fallout from Daniel’s quest for the truth.

Colin Firth plays antagonist Noah Scanlon, leader of Wardex, contracted by the government to maintain the biggest secret in the cosmos, with major consequences if he fails. Colman Domingo plays Hugo Wakefield, an advocate for disclosure fresh out of Wardex.

Written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man), Disclosure Day invades theaters June 12 via Universal.

Three-time Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg explores the idea of aliens on Earth this summer with Disclosure Day, and, as he revealed at SXSW, he’s a true believer.

Spielberg sat down with host Sean Fennessey for a live episode of The Big Picture, where he discussed his career and provided more insight into his upcoming feature.

Fennessey pointed out in the discussion that Disclosure Day shares some thematic overlap with Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but his latest revolves around the concept of a government cover-up over the existence of alien lifeforms.

Yet Spielberg hadn’t really considered exploring that aspect with Close Encounters. The legendary filmmaker explained why.

“Because one of my consultants on Close Encounters was the former head of Project Blue Book, the Air Force investigation. It was federally funded, the Air Force was investigating these anomalies in this guy, and J. Allen Hynek worked for them until he sent the Air Force on those sightings he had investigated and could not explain when he sensed there was a cover-up of even his efforts to investigate the project going into the private sector. He consulted with me a bit on Close Encounters, and he was very helpful because I introduced him to some people who had close encounters of their own.”

Spielberg himself has yet to experience a close encounter of his own, but would very much like to.

“Now, here’s the thing that I just want to say right now. I’ve made Close Encounters, I’ve made E.T. You’re about to see Disclosure Day very soon. June 12th, it comes out. I’m really into this. Why haven’t I seen anything? How have my friends have seen UFOs, now called UAPs, and I haven’t? I made a movie called Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I haven’t even had a Close Encounter, the first or second kind. Where’s the justice in that?”

“I’m not afraid of any aliens there or here. I have no fears about that whatsoever.”

He continued, “I think our movie does take into consideration, without giving too much away, the social dislocation that could occur theologically if it were announced that there’s evidence. Not only evidence, there’s interaction that has been going on for decades that we are not just now finding out about. It’s going to cause a disruption in a lot of belief systems, but I don’t think it is a lethal disruption at all.”

Don’t expect a slow, meditative film, though. “Disclosure Day moves really fast. It’s fast.”

Spielberg isn’t slowing down anytime soon, either. The SXSW keynote revealed that he’s currently developing a Western, with the aim to shoot in Texas and eschew Western tropes and stereotypes.

Look for Disclosure Day in theaters and IMAX on June 12, via Universal.

“I’ve always been fascinated with things that cannot be explained, and I’ve made a lot of movies about things that cannot be explained — from sharks to saucers,” Spielberg notes.

He continues, “People’s questions about what is not only going on in our skies but what is going on in our worlds, in our realities, has reached a critical mass of peoples’ complete fascination with, are we alone or are we not alone? And if someone knows we’re not alone, why haven’t we been told?”

Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Secret Service) is hooked up for an alien encounter in USA Today‘s new image from Steven Spielberg‘s Disclosure Day.

The mysterious sci-fi movie invades theaters on June 12 via Universal.

David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man) penned the script, based on a story by Spielberg.

Details are being kept under wraps beyond the vague synopsis: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people. We are coming close to Disclosure Day.”

Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place), Josh O’Connor (Wake Up Dead Man), Eve Hewson (Bridge of Spies), Colman Domingo (The Running Man), and Wyatt Russell (“Monarch: Legacy of Monsters”) also star.

Spielberg reunites with several frequent collaborators, including cinematographer Janusz Kaminski (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List), production designer Adam Stockhausen (Ready Player One, West Side Story), editors Michael Kahn (Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark) and Sarah Broshar (Ready Player One, The Fabelmans), and composer John Williams (Jaws, Jurassic Park).

Spielberg produces for Amblin Entertainment alongside Kristie Macosko Krieger (Ready Player One, The Fabelmans). Adam Somner (Ready Player One, Bridge of Spies) and Chris Brigham (Inception, Shutter Island) executive produce.

Good riddance to 2025; there’s a brand new year ahead packed to the gills with hotly anticipated new horror releases.

Even more exciting is that this only covers what’s already been announced; expect to get inundated with surprise announcements and film festival discoveries to further fill the calendar with horror goodies. Until then, this guide covers the notable highlights, from big releases like Scream 7 and Evil Dead Burn to anticipated chillers like Hokum, Obsession, and beyond.

Welcome to Bloody Disgusting’s 2026 Horror Preview.

If this preview of the year’s looming horror offerings is any indication, 2026 is going to be a whirlwind for nonstop horror. Of course, expect some release dates to shift and many surprises yet to be announced in the coming months. In other words, this is only the beginning of the year’s horror offerings. Could this be the year for Adam Wingard’s Onslaught, for example? We’re keeping our fingers crossed. Mike Flanagan’s Untitled Exorcist film shifted off its March release date, but could it still arrive in 2026? We’ll have to wait and see.

Disclosure Day will release in theaters on June 12, 2026.

Universal previews, “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you? This summer, the truth belongs to seven billion people.

“We are coming close to … Disclosure Day.”

Even more recently, Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment produced the Netflix docuseries “Encounters” last year, which explores true stories of human contact with otherworldly phenomena. You can stream all four episodes of “Encounters” over on Netflix right now.
