Life Is Strange and Disco Elysium fans will be getting their own TV adaptations, courtesy of Amazon. Per Deadline, Amazon Studios has teamed up with Dmitri M. Johnson’s dj2 Entertainment (which co-produced the Sonic the Hedgehog film adaption, along with the sequel) to bring several video game adaptations to the service, including Dontnod Entertainment’s Life Is Strange and ZA/UM’s Disco Elysium.

“The dj2 team has long believed that video games would one day serve as incredible source material for stories told in television and film, and that it was only the lack of love and respect for the artform which previously held successful adaptations back,” said Johnson.

Both adaptations had been in the process of development for a while now, with Shawn Mendes signing on to executive produce the Life Is Strange series, and ZA/UM having inked a deal in 2020 with dj2 for the TV adaptation of Disco Elysium.

Needless to say, there are plenty of film and TV adaptations of video games on the way in some form or another for genre fans. It was announced earlier this week that Netflix will finally be bringing BioShock to life, and of course Paramount+ has its Halo adaptation coming next month (and already has a second season confirmed).

There’s also the System Shock and Hunt: Showdown adaptations headed for new streaming service Binge, HBO’s The Last of Us, the upcoming Twisted Metal adaptation by Sony, and the Eli Roth-directed Borderlands film that finished production last year.

Life Is Strange tells the story of Max Caulfield, an 18-year-old photography student who discovers that she has the ability to rewind time, leading her every choice at the mercy of the butterfly effect. Meanwhile, Disco Elysium centres on a large city still recovering from the effects of a war decades ago. An amnesiac detective has been assigned to a murder case, during which he comes to recall his own past, along with the current forces trying to affect the city.

Developer Dontnod have a Christmas treat for those Life is Strange 2 fans waiting for the next episode. Dubbed “Rules”, the second episode is set for a January 24, 2019 launch. Here’s the synopsis for the upcoming episode.

“Sean and Daniel’s story continues in Episode 2. On the run from the police following a tragic incident in Seattle and the manifestation of a strange supernatural power, Sean and Daniel Diaz continue their journey into the winter months. As the two brothers struggle against the cold, Daniel gets increasingly ill. Sean decides that they must take the risk and make their way to their distant grandparent’s house to recover and seek shelter.

There, they encounter next-door neighbour Chris Eriksen, a young boy who believes he has powers eerily similar to Daniel’s, and they come face to face with his superhero alter ego, Captain Spirit. As Daniel and Chris are becoming fast friends, it’s up to Sean to make sure Daniel follows a set of rules they agreed on for his power: Never in public. Never talk about it. Run from danger.

Can Daniel successfully hide the truth from the people around them, will the temptation to explore the immense power within him be too much, or will he break the rules in a time of need?”

In addition, Dontnod and Publisher Square Enix have unveiled a live-action trailer for the episode, starring Gonzalo Martin, who provides the voice of Life is Strange 2‘s Sean Diaz.

Life is Strange 2 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

The first episode is expected to be released sometime in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, but if you’re a sucker for psychological thrillers, it looks to be worth the wait.

The trailer provides a nice overview of the setting, as well as explaining the concept of duality found within the game’s narrative, as well as protagonist Sam’s “double”, which will provide clues to aid in the player’s investigation in its own smartass way. The animation needs a bit of work, though. Still, the vague 2019 release date should provide the devs time to smooth things out.

Okay, so Dontnod’s Vampyr didn’t really end up being the amazing game that we’d hoped it would be. That apparently won’t stop Dontnod from bringing the game to the Nintendo Switch, according to publisher Focus Home Interactive’s latest financial report.

According to the document, Dontnod “will continue to maximize the potential of the Vampyr licence. After the game’s impressive success on PC, Xbox One, and PS4, it will be Nintendo Switch’s turn to welcome the Dontnod title to reach an even wider audience.”

By indications, Dontnod scored record revenues of €44.3m over the first six months of its fiscal year, thanks in part to Vampyr. You then of course have the upcoming Call of Cthulhu, which launches October 30, which also helped generate buzz for the French company.

No release date for the port has been announced, but in the meantime, we still have that McG-directed TV series to look forward to.

DONTNOD’s Vampyr drop on June 5th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. You’re excited, I’m excited, your dog’s excited. DONTNOD has upped the excitement further with this final launch trailer, which after all the developer diaries, story and gameplay trailers, pretty much means you know what you’ll be doing on Tuesday.

This trailer combines all of the good stuff that we’ve seen, tosses in some new stuff we haven’t, some story tidbits here, some combat there, and polishes it into a slick and stylish-looking spectacle. Sure, while it belies the game’s post-WWI London in the midst of the Spanish Flu setting, how many games these days have you being a vampire with cool vampire powers? Not many.

Up until this point, we’ve never gotten a good look at the combat component in DONTNOD’s Vampyr. We’ve had the story trailer, several developer diaries that danced around the topic, but nothing to be seen. Well, with the game being released in June (June 5th, to be exact), that all changes in the latest gameplay trailer.

From the look of things, the combat has that potential “free-flow” aspect similar to what you’d get in the Batman: Arkham games, albeit with cool vampire powers driving things. The trailer also hints at the dilemma that protagonist Dr. Jonathan Reid faces with his vampirism, and his decisions with whom to feed on in order to survive. Plus, like any good tease, the trailer hints at more of the backstory as to Reid’s loyalties to his vampire brethren.

June 5th can’t come soon enough. Vampyr will hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

After three dev diary entries for Vampyr, Dontnod have saved the best for last. Partly because at the end of this fourth entry, they’ve revealed the release date for the game: June 5th, 2018.

With this entry, the developers discuss their approach to storytelling, what it means to them, and how that relates to video games. As they’ve touched on in the previous entries, Dontnod’s focus is to create a rich story that players can truly be immersed in during the game. Balancing that out with equally-strong gameplay can be a difficult task, but from what they’ve shown so far, the team is certainly up for it.

Vampyr will be available for Steam, PlayStation 4 and XBox One.

Dontnod continue their series of developer diaries for Vampyr with their third entry, this one focusing on the character development and story. If you’re a sucker for devs that take the time to fully flesh out each character, this one’s for you. Unlike other RPGs, according to the game’s director, Philippe Moreau, the team focused on giving each citizen in the game “an identity”, which when it comes time to sacrifice them, it has impact and meaning. Plus, you’ll end up hearing your victim’s last thoughts as they die at your hand. If that’s not creepy…

Depending on who you choose to kill, according to narrative designer Stephane Beauverger, it will have an impact not only on the other citizens who were around that now-deceased person, but also the story. What that entails has yet to be revealed. I do hope that the hype doesn’t take over, but man, how cool would it be to have an engrossing story with game mechanics that take it a step beyond what we’ve become accustomed to in RPGs?

Picking up from last week, Dontnod Entertainment have released their second developer diary entitled “Architects of the Obscure”. While this entry continues the art vein of the previous, this time the devs focus on the artistic choices involved in bringing to life a vampire in war-torn streets of London in the midst of the Spanish Flu epidemic.

The episode goes into the four London districts that are in the game (Whitechapel, the East End docks, the Hospital, and the West End), and the choices made in each to convey the particular tones in gameplay. Also included is input from the game’s composer, Olivier Deriviere, whose industrial soundtrack is meant to invoke the lonliness that the game’s protagonist, Dr. Jonathan Reid, would feel inside a living city like London. Having the game take place at night also plays into this, as well.

The more I see of this game, and how much thought goes into the presentation, the more I can’t wait for this to finally drop. There’s still no firm 2018 release date, but as soon as it hits…

With Dontnod Entertainment’s Vampyr being one of our games to look forward to this year, it’s a no-brainer for Dontnod to start putting out developer diaries. The first episode, entitled “Making Monsters”, was released just recently, and has the devs chatting it up about vampires, and the varying “types” found within the world of Vampyr.

Mixed in with the vampire talk is some gorgeous in-game footage, which is an obvious bonus when you think about it. Game director Philippe Moreau goes into detail about the morality of being a vampire, and how unlike, say, a werewolf, a vampire it “self-aware” of their nature. This ties into the fact that the game’s protagonist, Doctor Jonathan Reid, must make tough choices with his vampirism, including the killing of his victims to prevent them from harming others. It all plays into the ripple effect Jonathan’s actions have within the game.

Vampyr is scheduled for release this year on PC, XBox One and PlayStation 4.
