Trees are Watching, the latest film from Kurdish-Iranian writer/director Bahman Ghobadi, opens with the quote “Trees are not silent. They perceive, remember, and bear witness.” This is apt considering the malevolent spirit that’s haunting the film is, in fact, a wooden chair; it creeps, it lurks like a shadow under closed doors.

It even, in the climax, attacks in mid-air.

Sometimes this is handled very seriously, and the personified object has a dangerous appeal. Just as often, however, the self-seriousness of Trees are Watching is at odds with its execution, which slips into silliness and occasionally even outright comedy. Expect at least some folks to mockingly refer to this as “the Eva Green flying chair movie.”

Green is Darya, a London-based writer whose area of expertise is the city of Mardin, Turkey, where she grew up. At the start of the film, she and her hearing-impaired daughter Connie fly in for a month-long writing retreat. Darya elects to stay at the home of a childhood friend, and the large, isolated house – with its two large and distinct trees – immediately becomes a visual focal point. The trees will, naturally, have an important role to play in the narrative.

Almost immediately, strange events begin to occur: Darya’s rental car breaks down unexpectedly on the road, and a news report on the radio indicates that this is the second consecutive summer with unexplained forest fires. Then there’s the mysterious figure of a woman that Darya first sees on the road, and then again in the backyard by one of the trees.

All of this precedes the moment when Connie, then Darya, realizes that one of the chairs is moving of its own accord.

The threatening furniture is part of a larger backstory involving Darya’s childhood, twin classmate sisters Nihal and Spin, and their relationship with their mother (Ozlem Tas). This unfolds in lengthy flashbacks and features a pair of great child actors, though the twists and turns of the past are not as complicated or twisty as Ghobadi’s screenplay believes them to be.

Nihal upsets her mother with a series of drawings which anticipate a dark, calamitous fate for the family matriarch. Nihal herself is then scared by (an admittedly creepy) plumber who tells her a tall tale while fixing the family’s toilet; as a result, the young girl is scarred to such a degree that she becomes fearful of going to the bathroom by herself. This pair of events – angering mom and being scared to flush – initiates a disastrous series of events* that carry deadly implications that reverberate from past to present.

*One of these is a sequence that can only call to mind the log truck crash that opens Final Destination 2, but sadly features unconvincing CGI logs, which flattens the visual impact. Still, it nevertheless earns a hearty chuckle.

Meanwhile, Darya processes her role in these events while contending with the return of adult Spin (Zeynep Çamci), who appears and disappears like a specter. The disgruntled childhood friend urges Darya to exact revenge on several authority figures from their childhood, which in turn takes Darya to plenty of scary locations, such as the house’s secluded basement, as well as the file room of their former school (sadly there’s no montage with microfiche, but it’s not far off).

So far, so familiar. Thankfully, Green, who has never met a genre project she doesn’t fully commit to, anchors the film along with the dedicated child actors. For long stretches, it’s the performances that carry Trees are Watching.

Even when the plot meanders or becomes fairly predictable (ie: the truth about what happened to the sisters and their mother or what is happening with the chair), Trees are Watching is visually appealing. Ghobadi and cinematographer Saba Mazloum favor plenty of overhead shots of the landscape to emphasize the clear-cut logging in the area, and a brief, but gorgeous survey of Mardin’s underground city feels sponsored by Turkey’s tourism board. Many of the scary bits are surprisingly effective, such as when Connie glimpses the shadow of the chair’s legs moving beneath a door or a fleeting, uncanny glimpse of the chair nuzzling one of the trees.

Eva Green stars in 'Trees Are Watching'

The visuals can only carry the movie so far, though. The nearly 1 hour 50 minute runtime doesn’t feel entirely earned, especially with regard to the mystery from the past. It’s far too obvious, though Ghobadi’s screenplay doesn’t seem to realize that, as evidenced by the fact that the climax treats the truth as a reveal.

By this point, the disconnect between the film’s more poetic, environmental, and philosophical underpinnings and its genre elements is clear. An earlier passage explores the often ironic way that individuals are reincarnated as wooden objects. This is a fascinating proposition, but it feels completely incongruous with other aspects of the film, such as Darya battling a flying chair in an empty pool or pleading with police officer Vedad (Murat Yildirim) about her sanity and going off her meds.

The tonal and narrative imbalance results in a film that feels at odds with itself. Trees are Watching simply never comes together, despite solid performances and several intriguing ideas. Chalk this one up as an interesting misfire.

Trees Are Watching had its world premiere at TIFF 2026. Release information TBD.

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival is in full swing and has already seen a handful of thrilling debuts for horror fans. From Vintage Violence to The Spiral to River, audiences are getting their first looks at what will likely be some of the best genre titles of the coming year. Another highly anticipated title is Trees Are Watching, which stars Eva Green, and adding even more excitement to the project is that Martin Scorsese has just boarded the project as an executive producer.

Deadline has confirmed that Scorsese has joined the Bahman Ghobadi movie ahead of its premiere on Friday. The pair have more than a decade of history of collaborations, with Scorsese having presented Ghobadi’s Rhino Season back in 2012, resulting in Ghobadi spending time on the sets of Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street and The Irishman.

Eva Green (Penny Dreadful, Nocebo) stars as “Darya, a writer obsessed with the spiritual resonance of trees, returns to her hometown of Mardin with her deaf daughter and grows haunted by past memories of Spin and Nihal, twin sisters she knew as a child.

“Residing in their former family home — which is bordered by mass deforestation save for an ominous pair of trees planted for each sister — Darya’s unease is suddenly exacerbated by nightly visitations of a malignant entity that takes a seemingly benign form: a chair made from local timber. Soon ruminating on her checkered relationship with Spin and Nihal, the latter of whom claimed to be terrorized by a similarly fearsome fixture, specifically a maternal witch said to lurk in the home’s noisy toilet, Darya’s sanity begins to wane.”

Ghobadi detailed how his personal experiences inspired the project, which is “shaped in part by the nightmares that have followed his 18 years of exile and his reflections on the connection between humanity and the natural world.”

Eva Green has become a favorite in the genre world, as she has a long history of a variety of macabre projects. While she starred in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows remake, she also starred in all three seasons of Penny Dreadful on Showtime. Genre-adjacent projects include Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For and 300: Rise of an Empire.

Stay tuned for details on the release of Trees Are Watching.

Ecological allegory collides with witchy psychological horror in Trees Are Watching, and the first image has arrived ahead of the film’s TIFF 2026 debut.

Trees Are Watching makes its world premiere at the festival on September 18, and the fest teases one grand guignol horror movie from Iranian Kurdish auteur Bahman Ghobadi (Half Moon, Turtles Can Fly).

Murat Yildirim also stars.

If that’s not appealing enough, the fest’s description of Ghobadi’s voyage into horror has our attention: “Across surreal set pieces that ebb with heightened phantasmagoric stylization and sometimes full-blown Grand Guignol spectacle — particularly in a thrilling sequence that recalls the American Final Destination series — Ghobadi conjures a unique flavour of terror, enriched with nuanced philosophy and a deeply personal dimension.”

Expect to hear more about Trees Are Watching when our TIFF coverage begins next month.

Netflix’s hit series “Wednesday” starring Jenna Ortega will return for Season 3 likely in 2027, and Netflix has revealed the new season’s main cast this morning with an announce video.

All your favorite characters will return in “Wednesday” Season 3, with Netflix announcing that Winona Ryder, Eva Green, and Chris Sarandon (Fright Night) will be joining them.

This will mark Winona Ryder’s return to Netflix in the wake of “Stranger Things” coming to an end, as well as a reunion with director Tim Burton. Eva Green and Chris Sarandon have of course previously worked with Tim Burton as well, with Green starring in Dark Shadows and Miss Peregrine, and Sarandon voicing Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Winona Ryder will be playing a character named Tabitha, while Eva Green is Aunt Ophelia.

Burton will return to direct “Wednesday” Season 3, with the season’s cast of returning faces and new players including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Billie Piper, Fred Armisen, Isaac Ordonez, Joy Sunday, Victor Dorobantu, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Oscar Morgan, Noah Taylor, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Kennedy Moyer, Evie Templeton, Joanna Lumley, Joonas Suotamo, Liv Spencer and more.

Creator/showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar returned for the spine-tingling second season of “Wednesday,” alongside executive producer and director Tim Burton.

In the second season of the series, “Nevermore is back in session as Wednesday tangles with a new principal, a devious campus stalker, and a waning grip on her psychic powers.”

The first two seasons of “Wednesday” are available to stream now on Netflix.

“Wednesday” Season 2 teased the introduction Morticia Addams’ mysterious sister, Ophelia Frump, and we now know that Eva Green will take on the role in the upcoming third season.

Green previously collaborated with “Wednesday” executive producer Tim Burton on Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Dark Shadows, and Dumbo.

“I’m thrilled to join the woefully twisted world of ‘Wednesday’ as Aunt Ophelia,” Green told Netflix. “This show is such a deliciously dark and witty world, I can’t wait to bring my own touch of cuckooness to the Addams family.”

“Eva Green has always brought an exhilarating, singular presence to the screen — elegant, haunting and beautifully unpredictable. Those qualities make her the perfect choice for Aunt Ophelia,” added creators/showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar. “We’re excited to see how she transforms the role and expands Wednesday’s world.”

Although she wasn’t seen until the final episode of Season 2 — and only from behind, wearing a flower crown and scribbling “Wednesday must die” on a wall — the specter of Aunt Ophelia has long loomed over Wednesday.

Throughout the second season, Morticia describes her sister as missing after she lost control of her powers as a Raven; a disturbing parallel to Wednesday’s loss of psychic abilities. When Morticia hands Wednesday Ophelia’s old journal at the end of Season 2, Wednesday’s powers come firing back in the form of a dreadful vision: Ophelia locked away in a dungeon-like room in Grandmama Hester’s mansion.

“Ophelia has been gone a long time,” Millar said of the Season 2 cliff-hanger. “It’s left a hole in Morticia’s life and a lot of unanswered questions. The reemergence of Ophelia is going to hit this family like a bomb.”

Returning cast includes Jenna Ortega, Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Isaac Ordonez, Billie Piper, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Victor Dorobantu, Evie Templeton, Luis Guzmán, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joanna Lumley, and Fred Armisen.

Netflix’s #1 most watched series, “Wednesday” premiered in 2022 and returned earlier this year. Stay tuned for more details on Season 3.

In the original “The Addams Family” TV series, Morticia Addams actress Carolyn Jones also played Ophelia Frump.

Lorcan Finnegan’s ‘Nocebo’ subverts the wicked nanny subgenre with a haunting horror story with a ruthless, relevant message.

“I am here with you.”

There are few bonds that are more innate and eternal than those between family. These fundamental connections can push the most ordinary of individuals to do impossible things. Parenthood–whether it’s the stresses that surround this responsibility or the idea that someone else doesn’t deserve it–is subject matter that frequently finds itself at the center of the horror genre. There is no shortage of evil nanny or creepy kid horror movies, but Lorcan Finnegan’s Nocebo strives for something more with this surreal, visceral Irish/Filipino hybrid horror story that contains some of the most haunting visuals of the year. It’s a powerful gut punch of a film that feels like M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant meets The Babadook meets Inside.

Nocebo begins in fairly familiar territory as Christine (Eva Green) and her husband Felix (Mark Strong) go about their ordinary, albeit overworked lives while they attempt to provide their son with the best that life has to offer. This simplistic existence spins off its axis when a caregiver, Diana (Chai Fonacier), shows up–seemingly out of nowhere–and becomes the essential godsend that Christine never knew she was missing. Nocebo lives in the tension of whether Christine actually hired Diana or if this helper has significantly more sinister intentions. A lot of Nocebo’s success relies upon not only if audiences buy into this central relationship, but if the payoff of where this all goes is actually worth the effort. Recent horror movies like Barbarian are proof that viewers can be patient when it comes to answers and while Nocebo never reaches those heights, it still goes out on a surprising turn that’s likely to leave more audiences satisfied than aggravated.

Nocebo is technically a fantasy horror movie, but so much of its material examines the survival of capitalism through the exploitation–and vilification–of overseas workers, which in this case narrows in on Filipino culture. The horror of the “other” has unfortunately been alive and well in the horror genre for decades. Nocebo wags these tired archetypes in the audience’s face, but what’s encouraging about the film is that there’s a level of authenticity here that comes from Filipino screenwriter, Ara Chawdhury. Nocebo and its vilified “other,” Diana, intentionally mock and subvert horror’s fascination with token mysticism. It’s no coincidence that Christine’s job centers around the exploitation of children and Felix is a marketing strategist who only views people in terms of dollar signs.

The growing schism between Christine and Diana fuels most of Nocebo’s story and there’s interesting material that’s born out of Christine’s superstitious, susceptible disposition. Finnegan concocts some frightening recurring symbols throughout this cat and mouse feud (a thriving tick is a recurring image that’s used to excellent effect and triggers several of Nocebo’s strongest scenes) that only become more overbearing to these characters. There’s a fascinating karmic connection between Christine and Diana that’s perpetually in flux and leads to some draining, harrowing performances. Eva Green’s fragile mental state in Nocebo’s final act is enough of a reason to check out the movie (even if it does occasionally feel like “Resurrection light”). Nocebo is a film that wallows in a lot of intense melodrama, but there’s also a wry sense of humor that comes out of Christine’s family life before Diane fully indoctrinates it.

Finnegan’s previous feature films, Without Name and Vivarium, are both sumptuous visual feasts that bombard the viewer with kaleidoscopic surreal scenes. Nocebo is no different, although it’s largely more restrained than Finnegan’s previous films; that is until the final act when Nocebo really gets to go wild as Christine’s mental state reaches newfound peril. Finnegan’s trippy visuals are usually the selling point to his stories and so it’s encouraging to see the director attempt new tricks here and not purely rely on what’s worked in the past. Additionally, Jose Antonio Buencamino’s plunky score is often the perfect tool to accentuate the movie’s mounting dread. There’s a quality to this music that feels tribal, primal, and foreign in nature, which fits with Nocebo’s themes and fascination with mysticism.

Nocebo deserves credit for its broader idea that capitalism is the greatest monster of them all, but it’s not something that ever fully comes together. There’s a horrific finale that effectively ties these themes together and proves that Finnegan is such a strong visual filmmaker. However, a little restraint can go a long way and Nocebo often comes across as heavy-handed with its grander ideas. It feels like a story and script that would benefit from a tighter additional pass, which is frustrating since there are also plenty of compelling ideas in the movie that are left a mystery and not overexplained. That being said, it’s still hard to argue with Nocebo’s message and the chilling final image that it goes out on. During a time where the horror genre is crowded with remakes and sequels, the risks that Nocebo takes and the pockets of culture that it highlights more than make up for the moments that fall flat.

Nocebo played at the Brooklyn Horror Fest 2022.

‘Nocebo’ releases in limited theaters on November 4th.

“Penny Dreadful’s” Eva Green suffers from a mysterious illness in Nocebo, a new psychological thriller from Vivarium director Lorcan Finnegan.

Mark Strong (Shazam!) and Chai Fonacier also star in the film that’s currently in production in Ireland, adds Variety.

“The film follows a fashion designer (Green) suffering from a mysterious illness that puzzles her doctors and frustrates her husband (Strong) until help arrives in the form of a Filipino carer (Fonacier), who uses traditional folk healing to reveal a horrifying truth.”

Adds the site: “Set between London and Manila, the film’s themes explore consumerism, human exploitation and the fast fashion industry, as well as the brain’s power in deciding whether to harm or cure the physical body.

“Nocebo” is the antonym of “placebo,” and refers to the Nocebo Effect, in which negative thinking on the part of a patient results in a more negative outcome.”

Written by Finnegan’s frequent collaborator, Garret Shanley, the film is produced by Emily Leo of Wild Swim Films and Brunella Cocchiglia of Lovely Productions, alongside Filipino co-producers Bianca Balbuena and Bradley Liew of Epic Media. XYZ Films is handling international sales at next week’s European Film Market and executive producing the film.

Take our money. Make this movie and take our money.

We’re not sure who first came up with the idea, but one of the most popular bits of fan casting on the internet right now is the mere thought of Oscar Isaac and Eva Green being cast in the roles of Gomez and Morticia Addams in a reboot of The Addams Family. Granted, a reboot hasn’t been announced, but that’s a pretty delicious proposal.

Earlier this year, someone took the idea and ran with it, cutting together a faux trailer for an Addams Family Netflix series starring Isaac and Green. The trailer was so convincing that many believed it was real, ensuring it became a viral hit on social media.

Now, the always awesome Boss Logic has lent his particular talents to the cause, whipping up a faux poster for the faux movie that’ll surely set your heart aflutter.

We love this idea. So much.

This is very fake. But we wish it was very real.

After spawning multiple movies and TV series’ both animated and live action, the Charles Addams-created Addams Family franchise has lay dormant for nearly 20 years now. We last got the chance to hang out with Gomez, Morticia and the gang back in 1998 thanks to direct-to-video film Addams Family Reunion, which saw Tim Curry take over the role of Gomez Addams.

In more recent years, a couple of Addams Family projects have come and gone: Tim Burton was at one point attached to potentially direct a stop-motion film, and in 2013 it was announced that an animated feature was in the works. Needless to say, the franchise is primed and ready for some sort of reboot – and it’s pretty clear that fans of the macabre family are hungry for it.

A faux trailer for Netflix’s “The Addams Family” hit the net over the weekend and quickly became a viral hit, already amassing nearly 5-million views in just a few days. The trailer, which we again must remind you is completely 100% fake (Netflix, to our knowledge, has no plans to acquire or do anything with The Addams Family), presents a rebooted series we’d love to watch.

In this must-watch fan pitch, Oscar Isaac and Eva Green star as Gomez and Morticia Addams. Just as inspired, Michael Shannon plays the role of Lurch. Check it out below!

As many of you may have heard, Showtime’s fantastic horror series The Eva Green Variety Hour Penny Dreadful was cancelled earlier this week. Well, cancelled may not be the appropriate word. According to series creator John Logan, he realized during Season 2 that the series and Vanessa Ives’ (Eva Green) arc would come to an end simultaneously. Logan said the following in a statement:

“I created ‘Penny Dreadful’ to tell the story of a woman grappling with her faith, and with the demons inside her. For me the character of Vanessa Ives is the heart of this series. From the beginning, I imagined her story would unfold over a three-season arc, ending with Vanessa finally — and triumphantly — finding peace as she returns to her faith.”

You can read Entertainment Weekly’s interview with Logan and Showtime CEO David Nevins here for more insight onto how the series final came to fruition.

***SPOILERS for the series finale of Penny Dreadful to follow.***

Forgive me for being crass, but I call bullshit. Showtime told Logan that they were going to cancel it and he was forced to end his series. Penny Dreadful was never a ratings winner. It was never able to match the series high of 872,000 viewers for the pilot episode in 2014, and even that is about half the viewers of a normal episode of Shameless. Penny Dreadful is also a ridiculously expensive series to produce (which explains how the much more cost-effective Masters of Sex secured a fourth season renewal last year). The money shows in the gorgeous set design, but apparently budget cuts were out of the question.

I would argue that the series was never solely about Vanessa’s arc. It was called Penny Dreadful, not Vanessa Ives. The series served as a more serious version of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen that saw literatures famous horror characters brought to life through Logan’s eyes. It was always about the ensemble, even if Vanessa Ives was the most interesting facet of that ensemble. Vanessa grew to become the emotional center of the series, but just because her life is over doesn’t mean the series has to be over as well. No, dwindling ratings and an expensive budget brought Penny Dreadful to an end. Showtime knew it and had to break the news to Logan, thus creating their “mutual agreement” to end the series.

But could Penny Dreadful function without Eva Green? For three seasons, she has been the heart and soul of the show. Does her death merit ending the series? Is it alright to cut the other characters’ stories short so long as Vanessa’s receives closure? That is up to you to decide. There were several loose ends tied up. Vanessa’s arc was the main one, of course. Malcolm received some closure over Mina’s death. Ethan accepted his role in Vanessa’s fate. The Creature was able to bury his son. That’s the extent of finality with “The Blessed Dark.”

What hurts the most is knowing all of the storylines that we’ll never get to see, especially after all of the Easter Eggs that were planted this season. We will never see Dr. Jekyll become Mr. Hyde. Well, not Robert Louis Stevenson’s version of him anyway, as Jekyll did earn his father’s title of Lord Hyde in his final scene (maybe that was the point all along). The introduction of characters like Jekyll, Dr. Seward (a superb Patti LuPone) and Catriona Hartdegen seems superfluous if this was truly meant to be the final season. Why waste time on these new characters if that was the case (not that I’m complaining, as both characters were welcome additions that I desperately wanted to see more of)? Leave them out and focus on the characters you already have established. Hartdegen seemed poised to be a Vanessa Ives stand-in following her death, so maybe Showtime realized that that would have been a fruitless effort. You can’t simply replace Eva Green and call it a day.

Where will Lily go from here? Are they just going to let Dracula go? Will anyone ever find out that Victor brings people back from the dead? Will Dorian’s painting ever be discovered? And what about that Season 4 tease with Ferdinand Lyle going to Cairo to see Imhotep’s tomb? If the plan was to always end this season, Lyle’s casual mention of Imhotep just seems like a cruel taunting from Logan, as opposed to a fun Easter Egg.

Some other plot threads that were left dangling (courtesy of our own Daniel Baldwin during a lengthy Facebook conversation we had last night):

– Malcolm, Ethan, and Lyle (who was VASTLY underused this season) still don’t know about Victor’s experiments.
– Ethan is still totally unaware that Victor murdered and resurrected Brona as Lily.
– Kaetenay aside, no one else in the group knows that Ethan is a werewolf or that he killed Sembene.
– Vanessa is dead, but the battle isn’t over. She was explicitly told last season that if she died, the “Mother of Evil” curse would simply pass to another.
– The Creature hasn’t met anyone else in the group beyond Victor.

I’m not saying I need everything wrapped up in a neat little bow, but this is just silly. There was so much material to mine stories from in a fourth season, and I truly think that Logan wanted to continue these characters’ stories. Sadly, we will never get to see them.

Of course, I could be totally wrong. Maybe John Logan did always intend for Penny Dreadful to be the story of Vanessa’s journey. Maybe this article is just the ramblings of a person distraught with grief because a show he loved was taken from him too soon. I sincerely hope that’s the case, but I have my doubts. At the very least, we got 27 episodes of this wonderful under-watched series. Like many deaths, you don’t always realize how much you loved it until its gone. I’m sorry Penny Dreadful. I took you for granted. Consider it a lesson learned. You’ll live on in Blu-Ray form next to my copies of NBC’s Hannibal. R.I.P.

What were your thoughts on the series finale of Penny Dreadful? Are you buying the story that Showtime is selling or are you, like me, more skeptical? Let me know in the comments below!

If you watched the third season finale for Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful“, you’ll probably have noticed that it ended with the words “The End”. Alas, that wasn’t hyperbole and fans will need to accept that those words are the last we’ll see of Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, and Timothy Dalton as Ethan Chandler, Vanessa Ives, and Sir Malcolm Murray, respectively.

Creator John Logan has made it clear to Deadline, “I can absolutely confirm it is really over, the end — that’s all she wrote.” He continues, describing the show as a poem, saying some are only meant to be, “…haikus and some are meant to be sonnets and some are meant to be enormous epics, and this was always meant to be a sonnet. It was something of grace and beauty. I think we’ve been able to achieve that in a really masterful way with the artists that I work with, everyone’s work. I think this is the right ending so for me to revisit that world again would seem inorganic, I think.”

When asked if the show might ever return, Showtime president David Nevins stated, “I’m always happy to speculate, there is no this is done. …I feel like it is a rich world that I think will live on for a very long time. …Who knows?”

Premiering in April of 2014, the show was positively received and built a strong fan base. It earned several nominations and won multiple awards over its three seasons, including Best Television Series, Best Original Music, Best TV Actress, and more.

There’s a new world coming.

The trailer for Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, in theaters September 30, 2016, is a bit surprising.

The overall tone is that this is some sort of magical fantasy, like Alice In Wonderland. Yet, the end of the trailer gets dark, and super weird. The film appears to transition from something along the lines of X-Men to, get this, Clive Barker’s Nightbreed.

“When Jake discovers clues to a mystery that spans alternate realities and times, he uncovers a secret refuge known as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As he learns about the residents and their unusual abilities, Jake realizes that safety is an illusion, and danger lurks in the form of powerful, hidden enemies. Jake must figure out who is real, who can be trusted, and who he really is.”

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children stars Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Ella Purnell, Allison Janney, Terence Stamp, Rupert Everett, with Judi Dench and Samuel L. Jackson.

The Gothic horror melting pot over on Showtime that is John Logan’s “Penny Dreadful” just had six more ingredients added into the mix, according to Deadline.  First up, Patti LuPone, seen last season in a guest starring role as witch Joan “The Cut Wife” Clayton, will be returning to the series in another part.  LuPone will be playing an American therapist named Dr. Seward, who has “an unconventional new approach” to treating Vanessa Ives’ (Eva Green) problems.  LuPone has now been set as a series regular, so expect Dr. Seward to stick around for awhile.

Given the nature of the series, I think it’s say to assume that we have just added another character from Bram Stoker’s famed novel, Dracula, to the series.  While we have yet to see the fiend himself, the Count has been referenced throughout the first two seasons and we have already be graced by the presences of Mina Harker (Olivia Llewellyn) and Abraham Van Helsing (David Warner).  The show’s version of the novel’s events have already taken place and so far the details have not yet been revealed, so perhaps we will be getting a deeper look next year?

Sam Barnett has been cast as Dr. Seward’s “mysterious young secretary”.  No further information about the character has been given at this time, but it’s safe to say that something is up at Dr. Seward’s office.  Continuing with Vanessa’s new acquaintances is the casting of Christian Camargo as Dr. Alexander Sweet, “a zoologist who strikes up an unlikely friendship with Vanessa”.  Another suspicious character, no doubt, as few who involve themselves in her life are ever who they claim to be.

DrJekyll

The new big literary character that Logan teased a couple of months back has finally been revealed:  Dr. Henry Jekyll!  Shazad Latif will be bringing Robert Louis Stevenson’s trouble physician to life and no doubt play an important role in the coming third season, although no details as to how he fits in have been revealed yet.  Veteran character actor Wes Studi joins the series as Kaetenay, “an intense, enigmatic Native American” who has strong ties to Ethan (Josh Hartnett) and will apparently also bond with Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton).

Lastly, Jessica Barden is set to play Justine, “a young acolyte” to Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney) and Lily Frankenstein (Billie Piper).  Given the nature of those two characters, as well as the series as a whole, I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that this Justine is none other than the titular character from the Gothic erotic novel Justine (or The Misfortunes of Virtue), which was written by the Marquis de Sade himself.  The sadism inherent both in the novel itself and the two series characters with whom she will associate practically guarantees this.  More trouble for poor Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) to deal with!

“Penny Dreadful” returns to Showtime next Summer.

Gothic horror drama series Penny Dreadful continues to be a success for Showtime, so it comes as no surprise that the premium cable network announced today that it has been renewed for a third season comprised of nine episodes.  Creator and showrunner John Logan (Hugo, Spectre) is already hard at work on the next phase of our monstrous heroes’ tale, with production slated to begin once again this fall in Dublin.  The second season, which just aired its seventh episode this past weekend, is set to conclude on July 5th.

Courtesy of Variety…

“John Logan’s brilliant writing and this amazingly talented ensemble continue to draw a passionate, global fanbase into the meticulously crafted world of ‘Penny Dreadful,’” said Showtime Networks president David Nevins. “Together with our wonderful partners at Sky Atlantic, we’re excited to see what new haunts John and his team have in store for season three.”

The order for the third season is an episode shorter than the current run, but I wouldn’t worry.  Many cable genre shows having been cutting back a bit lately, with Cinemax’s Banshee (not horror, but recommended nonetheless!) lopping off two from its usual amount next season and True Blood had shorter orders in later seasons as well.  In many cases, it often leads to tighter storytelling and the budget not being spread out as thinly, which is rarely a bad thing.

What terrors will Season Three hold for Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton), Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), Caliban (Rory Kinnear), Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), and the rest?  And will the lot I just mentioned even survive long enough to see the start of a third season?  I guess we’ll know come July 5th…

When Showtime’s deliciously sensual and morbidly horrifying cult show “Penny Dreadful” returned for a second season in May, Entertainment Weekly made the statement, “’Penny Dreadful’ belongs to Eva Green.” It was a bold statement. So I’m here, a month later, to make an even bolder statement. “’Penny Dreadful’ belongs to Billie Piper.”

tumblr_no92k1VrVa1sb25xto1_500

Don’t get me wrong, please don’t misunderstand: Eva Green is a rare gem, a magnificent sight to watch and not just because she’s basically the most beautiful woman on earth, but because she commands the screen and those sitting on the other side of it. But there’s someone else who lurked in the background of season one who’s pushed her way through to the foreground in season two as a major player and a driving force behind all that is emotional, beautiful, innocent, terrifying, and puzzling about “Penny Dreadful.”

Brona Croft.

Piper, who plays Brona/Lily Frankenstein, channels something on the show that no other character has channeled for me, a pure sense of heart and soul. The only other character that comes close to this is Caliban, but he also has his typical Frankenstein’s Monster anger issues. There was one character that also channeled what Piper brings to “Penny Dreadful” but he was killed in the second episode of season one: Proteus. It seems clear to me that the show wanted to make this correlation between Brona Croft’s pure soul and Proteus’ similar soul during the scene where they first met. At the time, it felt like nothing, looking back, now that Brona is Lily and has all of the attributes of Proteus, it feels very monumental.

peny025

Proteus: “Enjoy the fairy lights.”

Brona: “I always do.”

As Brona, Piper played a rough-around-the-edges, but intensely sweet and giving tortured soul. Still portraying one of the loveliest characters on the show. As Lily, she carries all the attributes of Mary Shelley’s famous Monster minus the “I’m going to murder everyone you love if you don’t do what I say” part. She exhibits trust, love, pureness, intelligence, loneliness, and a charming heart of gold. She is essentially everything that Vanessa Ives is not.

I’m not purporting that the show doesn’t belong to Eva Green because she isn’t pure at heart. But what I think is going to happen is that Lily is about to steal the show. She’s about to become one of the main reasons people watch it and a favorite character to boot. I think this fact is becoming increasingly clear to viewers, but what was not so clear is that she’s been stealing our hearts since the beginning of season one.

She was captivating when she so boldly came on to Ethan, her excitement and wonder at the theatre was absolutely child-like and delightful, her appreciation of the city on her first night out with Ethan could teach us all a lesson in gratitude, and when she tried to push Ethan away because of her own insecurities, she slayed us. These subtle scenes that didn’t seem to play too much of a part in the grand scheme of “Penny Dreadful’s” first season plot, were toying with our subconscious, preparing us for the second season and her return as Lily Frankenstein.

tumblr_np25n8ceKL1u1slkbo1_500-2

All this in addition to the fact that she channels a new take on Mary Shelley’s Monster. She is, as I’ve previously mentioned, a completely pure and charming version of the classic Monster. But she will also be (what I am completely assuming) a very feminist version, one that Shelley would be so proud of. Ives challenges the patriarchy all the time, it’s in her blood, she practically is the patriarchy. So it doesn’t make as much of an impact on the viewer. But Lily is learning things as a grown adult female that she wasn’t able to learn as she grew up, because she didn’t grow up, she popped into existence and now she has to figure out how to be a female in a dominant, patriarchal society. This is something viewers need right now, especially now. We look at Ives and think, “What a badass female! She is completely respected along with these men; they admire her, they need her. She’s such a great example for females!” And we’re not wrong… But with Lily, we will see the process. We will watch her transform and become the exact thing that we all want in modern day society. Watching that transformation, in my opinion, will be much more powerful than just seeing it already developed in Ives.

tumblr_nowhhkS8ID1smi5c7o1_500

“Penny Dreadful” is a dark and dreary show without much to hope for (in the best way possible, it is horror after all). While the evil characters and the characters that sit somewhere between good and evil are absolutely necessary, there has to be a light. There has to be something to guide us through to the end. If not, we lose hope and the show starts to feel daunting. Brona was, and Lily is, that light.

Postscript: Not to mention, Lily is going to steal all of the men’s hearts and this is going to add such a sexy, lovely, and energizing element to the show!

You don’t need to remind me of my sins. Just don’t forget yours. ~Caliban

I think “Verbis Diablo” is my favorite “Penny Dreadful” episode of both seasons so far. The development in this episode was so rich but (as it has happened in the past with many shows) when they try to fit in too much character development, things get muddied. But such is not the case with this one. It was beautifully plotted and paced to perfection. In addition it had my heart vacillating between shock-induced hummingbird beats and melting into a pool of gooey love for (some) of characters.

Speaking of such characters. I’m about to make an incredibly bold statement here, especially since it’s only been one episode, but I think that Caliban (now John Clare) and Brona (now Lily) might be my favorite live action Monster and Bride…ever. All last season, I was wondering what Brona’s arc would be. I knew she wasn’t just a love interest for Ethan because they didn’t spend enough time developing their relationship. And I knew she’d probably stick around because…well…frankly, Showtime made a character poster for her. So there needed to be another reason she was a part of the cast. And this, this is perfect. It’s been one episode of her being Lily and already she has added a grand new element in both the lives of Caliban and Victor.

Screen Shot 2015-05-11 at 7.09.50 AM

But uh oh. I foresee some serious conflict in the future in two ways: Victor’s finally created the perfect creature and now he can’t have her. This has been his life’s work and now that he’s succeeded, he must let go. The second issue I see arising, and I may be reading into it a little too much, is that I’m fairly certain Victor and Lily will develop feelings for each other and that’s not just a problem where Caliban is concerned but Ethan as well. All this to say: Bravo, “Penny Dreadful” for adding such a complicated and unique element to the story of Frankenstein.

I must also thank the writers for the conversation between Ives and Caliban. It was the one time in last night’s episode that I could NOT keep myself from smiling (okay, aside from all the little smiles that Ethan and Lyle’s flirtatious banter brought me). What a beautiful, thoughtful, and stunning introduction for those two characters. The juxtaposition of the scene is stark and striking. Surrounded by the ill and the poor in a dark and dank cavern, yet the two of them seem to be surrounded in light with the lovely and profound words they speak to each other. And their chemistry is exquisite, not in a sexual way, but it’s as if they have an immediate understanding of each other’s true nature. And when Ives closes out their magnificent first meeting with the compliment to his eyes…no words.

Let’s get to the meat (kind of in a literal way…) of the episode. Evelyn Poole. She is quickly becoming my favorite character. Not only does she bathe in blood but she’s also the sassiest, silver-tongued, I-get-what-I-want-so-fuck-off Bitch Witch around. I absolutely adore her. I could watch an entire episode of just her. But it’s not just her character that is wonderful; it’s what her character is adding to the dynamic of the cast and plot. She hasn’t had a chance yet to do too much damage to our crew. But she will. And it’s going to be bad. And I utterly cannot wait. (Yes, I know you all want me to talk about the dolls and the baby heart…give it a minute).

Screen Shot 2015-05-11 at 8.07.35 AM

Okay, minute over. The ending…THAT END! My hand literally involuntarily flew to my slack jaw. Who could have seen that coming? No one. That’s who. The dolls, eh, whatever. Dolls are no longer creepy to me, like clowns…is anyone still afraid of clowns? But when dolls are stuffed with human baby hearts…still not creepy but demented and terribly sad. Now that we know what she does with these dolls (or I guess I’m assuming she does something nefarious to the person the doll looks like ::cough cough:: Ives ::cough cough::) it’s incredible to see how many lives she has most likely ruined because dayummmm…that room had SO many dolls. Not to mention how many babies she has killed.

Screen Shot 2015-05-11 at 8.09.17 AM

GAH! This episode was so good I could go on forever.

Random Reflections:

How adorable are Ethan and Lyle? Ethan is such a charmer and Lyle has no shame.

I can’t help thinking of this misfit, ragtag crew of occult purveyors as Scooby-Doo and Gang.

“Sad old sodomite in too much rouge in a flamboyant wig.” Seriously, that witch cuts like a knife.

I just want to see Ives smile again. Who’s with me on that?

I really appreciated the story Ethan told Lyle in the archives about the wolves. His obvious emotion was more telling than his actual words. They are definitely taking their time developing his character and good for them. Slow burn is wonderful when done correctly.

Did I hear correctly? The name of the one survivor of the Tavern massacre, was his name Mr. Ripper?

Angelique No-Last-Name did not impress me. It could be my issue with incredibly bold people, I find them daunting, but eh. Hopefully something fun comes of that. However, in this episode, just from what I’ve seen so far, Dorian and Angelique bore me. They’re just two beautiful things who enjoy way too much hedonism. Let’s hope our lovely new lady of the night (that was a brothel, right?) adds some dimension to Dorian’s story because he needs some facets.

Leave your thoughts in the comments section! Remember, I have such wonderful swag from Showtime and I’m still looking for profound and thoughtful commenters to share with!

“Can there be two monsters like that in our city?” Oh, if only these chumps knew.

The story itself is simple enough: Vanessa and Ethan are attacked by a coven of witches, which sends Vanessa into a tailspin of crazy (as most things do), Mina is buried and Malcolm returns to London, Victor continues his task of bringing Brona back to life as Caliban’s bride so that he can secure the safety of his future, and Caliban gets a job at what appears to be the most badass wax museum of all time, run by a couple that seem reminiscent of either Sweeney Todd/Mrs. Lovett or the Thenardiers.

While “Fresh Hell” relies heavily on the satanic rituals and goings-on in Vanessa and the witches’ lives, make no mistake about it: emotionally, this episode belongs to Caliban. He is the most heartbreaking take on Frankenstein’s Monster I’ve seen in a long time. His self-loathing, shame, violent outbursts, unconditional love, loyalty, and hatred are so true to Mary Shelley’s original Monster it makes me want to weep.

Screen Shot 2015-05-04 at 11.06.57 AM

He stole this episode with moments like “mine is not a face for touching,” (how about that scene, eh? That darling girl touching his face with such tenderness and understanding…such a beautiful moment), and his pleading—to whomever—to let Brona live. His raw vulnerability evokes emotions I never knew I had. So again, while “Fresh Hell” intended to introduce a new foe for Vanessa and further her tortuous life story, it was Caliban who owned my attention/love/hurt/and heart.

But this wouldn’t be a proper review without talking about “Penny Dreadful’s” new enemy—the Nightcomers. These are witches in service of Satan, though they are directly in the service of their Madame. You may remember her from last season. Madame Kali, the “psychic” from season one’s “Séance” episode. Turns out she’s not as phony as we may have thought. She’s in bed with Satan and they’re both after Vanessa.

Screen Shot 2015-05-04 at 10.56.01 AM

Honestly, I’m disappointed in myself for not seeing witches coming. Witches are all the rage these days in TV, books, and comics. It’s only natural they’d show up in the one show on TV that seeks to combine every supernatural being out there. As with TV’s “Salem,” “Penny Dreadful” does not bother with making its witches sexy maidens of Satan. “PD’s” witches are hideously bald and malnutrition-looking creatures that take on almost a Nosferatu look when transformed into their true form.

As excited as I am to see where this new plot takes us (witches are a blast) I’m mildly bored with Vanessa being tortured. Some hardships are wonderful for character development, but what Vanessa has been through and continues to go through is on the verge of overkill. While Green plays the role to perfection, honestly she plays it beyond perfection—it’s like magic watching her in all her tortured states, but when it happens every episode, it gets old and I’d die to see her happy for just one moment in time.

Overall, “Penny Dreadful” is one of the most stunning shows on television. It’s so atmospheric. It’s dark and broody and sensual. It’s chaotic and sexy, calm and unyielding. While “Fresh Hell” could have been a stronger season two opener, I think they did a fine job reintroducing us to the majority of the cast and their insane hardships. I would have liked to see more of Malcolm after the death of Mina—the girl he spent an entire season looking for (that felt a bit anti-climatic, no?) and as I made clear above, I could have done with less of Vanessa and perhaps more of Ethan and his struggles. But I’m not sweating that, because this season is clearly going to explore his life in great detail.

My one serious complaint…where the hell was Dorian?!

Random Observations:

  • Victor works at his desk with his back turned to a dead body that is meant to come alive again. You couldn’t pay me enough money to work with my back against a dead body meant to come alive again.
  • Victor also caresses said dead body. So there’s that.

Screen Shot 2015-05-04 at 11.06.13 AM

  • That blood bath scene with Madame Kali was delightful. No witch is complete without a sexy blood bath.
  • This reviewer absolutely cannot wait to find out what Brona remembers and what she doesn’t. There is so much potential for some weird love triangle between Brona, Ethan, and Caliban. This also ups the chances of everyone finding out about Victor’s little secret.
  • “That face will make our fortune.” Uh oh…

Tell us your thoughts on “Penny Dreadful’s” season two opener! I have some great PD swag sent to me from Showtime and I’m looking for the most profound commenter to share with. *wink* (Must be in the US and no PO boxes)

I’m no longer upset about the inevitable train wreck that is going to be the rebooted Universal Monster franchise. How can I be when everything I would want in a reboot is already happening on Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful”. After last year’s compelling season finale, “Penny Dreadful” instantly became one of my most anticipated Summer returns. Delightedly, “Fresh Hell” doesn’t wait around to address major cliffhangers and get right into telling the tragically beautiful stories of our characters.

Josh Hartnett and Eva Green continue to dazzle in their performances, being the main focus in the return. For the first time in years, the art of possession has unlocked the secret to being scary again. This season promises to dive further into the black arts and sorcery which implies some serious Devil interaction from Green as well as our “big bad” for the season, Madame Kali (Helen McCory) who’s back as the leader of a vicious coven. Opposite Green is Hartnett’s lonesome werewolf, Ethan Chandler. The final scene of last year’s season finale revealed what most already knew to be true, Chandler on the brink of a classic looking werewolf transformation. While dealing with his own inner demon, Chandler confides in Vanessa revealing to here that he has “black outs” and doesn’t remember things but that he usually wakes up covered in blood. Whether that means he actually doesn’t know he is a werewolf or not remains to be seen.

eva

Our other returning characters aren’t finding themselves much better on the other side of town. Harry Treadway’s portrayal of Dr. Frankenstein continues to pull from the Universal and Hammer incarnations by combining Peter Cushing’s scientific and proper demeanor with Colin Clive’s energy and madness. I was excited to have the Bride of Frankenstein teased. Billie Piper’s performance as the doomed Brona Croft was the stand out for me last season and the idea of having her as the focus character for one of my favorite entries in the original Monster’s line up is exciting. The show writers seem to be taking the idea of “Bride” in a very literal sense however so I predict an even more tumultuous relationship forming between creator and child.

In historical interest, the introduction of a Waxworks museum is not only a nice homage to House of Wax but also very telling of the time period. 56 years before “Fresh Hell” opens, a wax museum by the name of Madame Tussaud’s opened up in London and would go on to become one of the most famous wax houses of the 20th century. Of course, the Waxworks portrayed isn’t Madame Tussaud’s but in addition to being historically relevant the inclusion of it also made me realize the characters are in many was could be molded into exhibits themselves. Using Europe’s rich culture has made the city into a character in its own right. The stark white snowscape of winter blends right into the drab slums of London town.

I’ll leave you with this, last season there was a lot of Egyptian mythology and iconography surrounding the vampires. This season seems to be shifting gears in ancient beliefs by introducing a character by the name of Hecate, who in Greek mythology is a goddess of sorcery and necromancy. Unless that just happens to be her name, which I doubt, it implies we could see more Greek mythology incorporated in later episodes.

Continuing our catch-up of “Penny Dreadful,” now that it’s recently become available for purchase, we discuss the second episode, “Séance,” and dear lord this episode is powerful. It’s a stunningly intense hour, primarily due to two of gothic literature’s greatest characters: Frankenstein’s Monster and Dorian Gray.

In “Séance,” Sir Malcolm Murray continues his search for his missing daughter Mina. This includes further research of the vampire corpse from “Night Work,” which brings Victor Frankenstein back into the company of Murray and Ives as well as gives Ferdinand Lyle (Simon Russell Beale), the flamboyantly magnificent Egyptologist, much more desired screen time. Meanwhile, Ethan Chandler generally does nothing of real importance. His moments in this episode serve the storyline only to introduce Irish prostitute Brona Croft (Billie Piper) and very subtly heighten the intrigue on his mysterious past (and present for that matter). Perhaps most importantly, “Séance” introduces the viewer to a major force and popular literary character, Dorian Gray, who completely seduces this episode. And last but not least, the story takes a considerable amount of time to delve into Frankenstein’s Monster.

One cannot describe “Séance” without discussing the titular scene: a (wait for it) séance held by Lyle. It’s a lively event that ends on an insanely demonic note. The problem occurs when the medium conducting the séance (from whom you get the impression is simply a source of entertainment and not legitimate) is overcome by a dark presence claiming that there is “another here” referring to Ives and the possible dark presence residing within her. Then, for nearly six minutes…all hell breaks loose and Eva Green gives one of the most evocative and chaotic performances for a television audience. We’re talking six minutes carried completely by Green. Too much is revealed or hinted at during this scene for me to talk about it explicitly. But I will say that it deals greatly with Mina and some serious family issues. And also, it’s super not safe for work. Unless you work in a place where it’s okay to say the word “cunt” a lot. A lot. This is the type of performance that does not leave you any time soon. It’s also the type of performance that is difficult to watch more than once, so watch close and listen well the first time.

As I mentioned in my “Night Work” review, the darkness of Ives’ soul is constantly called into question, and this episode reveals a great deal about her “darkness.” Especially in a scene where Lyle analyzes the vampire hieroglyphics. The scene is a follow up to Frankenstein’s earlier analysis that the hieroglyphics—that cover the vampire’s body from head to toe—are from the Egyptian Book of the Dead. They deal with the Egyptians’ goal of transmutation to an “afterlife of something more profound—eternal life.”

As with the Frankenstein analysis, Lyle’s look into the markings is also extremely brief yet a lot of information is revealed. Frankly, those types of scenes always annoy me. Yes, this is a paranormal/supernatural horror but there are still parts that need to remain practical and when things are “figured out” too quickly, credibility seems to blow away like a wisp of hair. Regardless, Lyle comes to some hard and fast conclusions about both the hieroglyphics and Ives. Both dangerous and both extremely important to the mythology of “Penny Dreadful.” Upon realizing the extreme threat that Murray is dealing with, Lyle delivers a swift warning to stay away from whatever it is he’s after.

This scene with Lyle might be my biggest grievance with the episode. Aside from the fact that it was a complete info dump, his parting words to Murray are very presumptuous and have little ground to stand on. It’s as if the writers gave way to practicality for the sake of moving the story along quickly. Things are muddied; the markings on the vampire corpse start to fuse with Ives and at this point we simply have no clue of knowing where that’s headed.

LouieDeMartinis-Frankenstein-Proteus-PennyDreadful

The time spent with Frankenstein and his monster, Proteus, is magnificent. It’s exactly the type of slow burn drama this show needs to balance out the horror and sexuality. Treadaway offers an eager, fascinated portrayal of Frankenstein. He completely nails the essence of Mary Shelley’s young doctor and the raw curiosity that got him into so much trouble. Proteus portrays The Monster in a beautifully sad performance. The necessary intimacy between him and the doctor is palpable. His emotions are exposed to the viewer and are very potent. He captures the childlike wonder of The Monster without losing the underlying fear.

Dorian Gray, both in literature and in his depiction in “Penny Dreadful” is the essence of psychosexual horror. He is first introduced to us by way of Croft as he takes nude photographs of her and later engages is some emotionally disturbing sex with her. There is no way to describe how sexually charged and horrifying this initial scene becomes. Perhaps I’ll just drop a quote to encapsulate the heavy shit we’re getting into, “I’ve never fucked a dying creature before. Do you feel pain more deeply?” For some viewers, Reeve Carney might take some getting used to as Dorian Gray, but I absolutely adored his interpretation. He’s brash and arrogant, but sexy, compassionate, empathetic, and lovely. There’s inquisitiveness in him that I find so inherently attractive. Some might find him too “deep” compared to the Gray from literature who’s definitely more selfish. But I think it played out splendidly.

Penny-1.2-Dorian-Billie

Overall: fantastic episode. It’s bookended by two extremely gruesome and shocking scenes, is filled with profoundly haunting performances, lighted occasionally by the lovely Croft and Proteus’ lust for life, and sizzles with Green’s unspeakable sexual energy.

What did you think of “Séance”? Is this show faring well for you thus far? Worth the purchase?

“Penny Dreadful” seemed to come and go without much fanfare. And for those of us without Showtime, it was reduced to nothing more than sexy trailers and portrait-style character posters. Simply put: it was a brilliant concept bulked up with extreme talent facing the harsh storm of premium cable and lackluster summertime audiences. But now that it’s been picked up for a second season, Bloody Disgusting wants our readers to know whether or not they should give a shit. Luckily for all of us, season one became available on iTunes this week, so for the next 8 days I’ll be binge reviewing season one of “Penny Dreadful” and I hope that you’ll watch along with me and weigh in with your thoughts on this fearlessly stitched, literarily-steeped psychosexual horror.

Shockingly, for a show touted as a ‘literary mash-up,’ the first three main characters we’re acquainted with have yet to appear in literature: Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett), and Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton), whose daughter, Mina Murray appears in loads of literature, most famously: Dracula.

We first lay eyes on Ives in the middle of some insane possessed prayer (spiders included!). She’s a stunning clairvoyant medium and a powerful force—all trussed up in the most proper of appearances. Miss Ives seems to create fear, chaos, sensuality, and tension wherever she goes (or on whomever she sets her glare). As the episode progresses, the darkness of her soul is constantly called into question.

Chandler, an American sharp shooter touring with a carnival, initially feels like cheap plastic compared to Ives’ fine china, but as Ives later describes, he is much deeper than he cares to show. When Ives approaches Chandler with a proposition of some “night work,” we are treated to one of the most intensely sizzling, non-overtly sexual back-and-forths I’ve seen on television in quite some time. As expected, wherever Green goes, raw sexuality is sure to follow.

“Penny Dreadful” runs on juxtaposition, both in tone and character. The dichotomy of scenes from Ives’ spider-invested medium moment to Chandler’s phony American carnival show should be jarring but instead create a sense of discord that perfectly represents the rest of the episode. Not all of the stark juxtapositions work, but the ones that do serve up an apropos unsettling tenor.

There’s a reason “Penny Dreadful” is billed as “psychosexual horror,” it moves seamlessly from haute sexual tension to horrific visuals. The themes of Stoker’s Dracula run deep. Mina has been taken by a “creature” (read: vampire) and her father, Sir Malcolm, is on a violent, determined quest to retrieve her. When the “night work” commissioned by Ives and Murray turns extremely supernatural, Chandler’s sharp shooting is worth shit and only the combined skills of Ives and Murray can stop the chaos.

During the mission, they kill and harvest one of the vampires (something very akin to Nosferatu). And it’s a good thing they need a doctor to help dissect the creature because this brings us to the filthy little lair of Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway). He’s a hostile, self-righteous prick, but he’s the first real literary character we come across. It’s this precise moment where two of literature’s most iconic horror characters meet: Frankenstein and Vampire. The gravity of this moment is neither overlooked nor overdone. The stylized cinematography, Treadaway’s intense portrayal, and the deep, rumbling score scream to the viewer: “Hey, this is a big moment for television, so watch up.”

penny-dreadful

I’ll admit, upon first watch, what’s revealed during the autopsy of the vampire feels completely out of left field, as if the show jumped the shark twenty minutes into its first episode. But upon further personal research, the findings are deeply rooted in ancient mythology and give this first episode a depth I wasn’t prepared for. What’s even more impressive is the immediate comic relief that follows the harrowing scene, which again, should feel deeply out of place but instead works only to the show’s advantage. Because while yes, we’re watching an intensely dark portrayal of grisly Victorian London, we’re also dealing with a ‘closed world,’ a world in which the average inhabitant is unaware of the supernatural goings-on.

The ultimate plot revelation comes with Green’s perfect delivery of a succulent monologue about the ‘demimonde.’ The world between what we know and what we fear. This is the world we’ll be living in for the majority of “Penny Dreadful.” A world full of supernatural horrors unimaginable, where science and superstition meet.

The episode isn’t perfect. There are a lot of slow scenes that serve no greater purpose than to arouse us and heighten our senses. The episode starts to drag about two thirds of the way through and the overall set up is tedious. It’s clear that “Penny Dreadful” wants us to be immersed in the blended world of television fiction, classic fiction, and straight reality, but the immersion is painstakingly slow and uses dialogue more than any horror show should.

Though tedious it is, the development of Frankenstein’s character is viciously daring. The liberties taken with his personality traits feel surprisingly accurate. I applaud the writers for adding on to an existing character—such a well known one, at that—and doing it so boldly without losing the essence that Mary Shelley created almost 200 years ago. The fresh look into Frankenstein fits the essence of the show and its audacious creative vision.

What did you think of “Penny Dreadful”: ‘Night Work’?

Back in 2005, when comic book legend Frank Miller joined forces with renegade indie filmmaker Robert Rodriguez to bring Miller’s sleazy, hyper-stylized, ultraviolent tribute to ’40s pulp detective thrillers Sin City to the big screen, it seemed the stars aligned quite nicely on that project, resulting in a swirling monochromatic blend of classic noir atmosphere, grindhouse-style exploitation and state-of-the-art digital magic. It was the right combination at the right time, and its success was well-earned. While a return to the rain-slicked perpetual night of Basin City was a foregone conclusion, it’s amazing it took nearly a decade for Miller and Rodriguez to revisit that world… but they finally did, delving again into Miller’s comic source material for a new set of interlocking stories – most of which actually take place prior to the events of the first film.

Where the original Sin City dove headlong in to surreal, twisted and often horrifying fantasy (living severed heads, monstrous mutants, a cannibal serial killer), A Dame to Kill For plays its cards a bit closer to the chest, adhering more to the long-established tropes of the hard-boiled ’40s detective novels and classic films which inspired Miller’s comic series in the the first place, with much less emphasis on outlandish, horror-tinged scenarios. That might seem like a fair choice (though perhaps a let-down for horror fans), but in the long run this approach actually works against the film, leaving it in often tedious limbo between over-the-top comic fantasy and gritty, old-school film noir, sampling heavily from both but not fully committed to either.

Thankfully, the wild, anarchic sense of fun is mostly intact, thanks in large part to the strength of the actors involved. Seeing many of the original characters return to the fold is a definite plus: Mickey Rourke’s hulking, wise-ass bruiser Marv is always a blast, dominating as thoroughly as he did in the first film (and rightly so); Jessica Alba returns as whip-cracking exotic dancer Nancy, now tormented by the loss of Bruce Willis’ grizzled cop John Hartigan, the only man she ever loved (the fact that he blew his brains out in the last film doesn’t mean he can’t watch over her). Rosario Dawson’s tough-as-nails Gail gets an awesome entrance, flanked by her all-female crew of Old Town assassins, but much like Alba, she doesn’t ultimately have much to do apart from briefly assisting Brolin. In fact, many of the principals are a bit underused, lost amid a rambling collection of missed opportunities.

Among the new talent on display is rock-jawed Josh Brolin, taking over the role of Dwight from Clive Owen for the film’s central tale, which precedes the events of the first film and follows Dwight’s doomed relationship with impossibly seductive femme fatale Ava Lord – the titular Dame – played with spooky, green-eyed, serpentine grace by the frequently naked Eva Green, turning in one of the film’s most outlandishly memorable performances. While the change in Dwight’s looks is explained reasonably well, and Brolin is compelling (as always) in the role, his personality has clearly shifted from super-suave antihero to a coarse, overwrought private-eye type who delivers the film’s most cringe-inducing, clichéd noir lines. Oh sure, I know Miller’s playing with the formula, and often in a satirical way, but some of Dwight’s Mickey Spillane-on-acid narration in this segment verges from hard-boiled into waaay overcooked, provoking the kind of groans usually reserved for truly awful puns. Joseph Gordon-Levitt brings his usual boyish charm as Johnny – a cocky, nearly infallible young gambler who pits his skills against Basin City’s puppet master, Senator Roark (the awesome Powers Boothe, once again devouring virtually every scene he’s in), who redefines the term “sore loser” in one of the film’s most brutal moments.

I would have enjoyed more screen time from any of these players, but the often truncated plot lines occasionally sabotage their potential. Loose ends go flopping in all directions – so many, in fact, that I suspect eleventh-hour cuts might have laid waste to large chunks of each story. For example, we’re clearly shown Johnny on a collision course of vengeance against the Senator (tempered by a shocking secret they share), but this thread is resolved too abruptly to carry enough dramatic weight. Alba’s Nancy is also driven by revenge, turned half-mad by hatred toward the Senator – whom, along with his late son Junior (a.k.a. “Yellow Bastard”), she blames for Hartigan’s suicide in the first film – and each time we see her she’s one step closer to exacting poetic justice… but when the moment of truth arrives, it’s a case of too little, too late.

Rounding out the ensemble is Dennis Haysbert (taking over for Michael Clarke Duncan, who sadly died in 2012), all smooth menace as Ava’s unstoppable bodyguard Manute – though I would have liked to see more of his titanic clashes with Marv, the only man who can equal him in hand-to-hand combat. We even get a creepy cameo from veteran actor Stacy Keach – albeit smothered in a grotesque fat-suit – but his inferred connection to Roarke begins and ends there. (Speaking of cameos: be on the lookout for a certain Ms. Gaga as a  hash-slinger with a heart of gold, and the co-directors as drunken characters on a cheesy TV show.)

The stylish action comes as fast and crazed as Sin City fans have come to expect (heads and limbs go flying at every opportunity; one multiple decapitation got a round of applause from the audience), and the filmmakers utilize the same mad technical and artistic skills to bring lusty life to Miller’s panels – all inky black night and cut-out white silhouettes spattered with primary-color highlights (red cars, gold coins, a devilish blue dress, and buckets of blood in various hues). But ultimately A Dame to Kill For comes off as more of an interesting companion piece to the original film than a tale strong enough to stand tall on its own. Come to think of it, I’d actually like to see the two cut together into a single epic, while shifting some of the storylines around for continuity – similar to Coppola’s re-cut of the first two Godfather films – with some of the apparently missing plot threads restored. Now that would be a flick to kill for.

We’ve been obsessing ever since we saw the first taste of Alexa Vega in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete Kills.

Now, she’s taking on a role in TWC-Dimension’s August 22 release of Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.

She’ll play Gilda, says this new poster, which rivals any beauty shot of Eva Green and Jessica Alba. I think it’s safe to say the new Sin City features a whole lotta strong women – and we like that.

We also just updated the article with two clips, one that doesn’t carry an empty threat, the other putting Marv’s rampage on display.

The sequel is about Dwight McCarthy planing to have his vengeance against the woman who betrayed him, Ava Lord, while Nancy is trying to cope with Hartigan’s death.

Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis, Juno Temple, Jaime King, Rosario Dawson, Michael Madsen, Jamie Chung, Dennis Haysbert, Crystal McCahill, Christopher Meloni, Jeremy Piven, Julia Garner, Ray Liotta and Stacy Keach all star.

Give me a second… okay, I’m good.

Just minutes ago we showed you a new comic poster for Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, in theaters August 22 from TWC-Dimension. Now, we have some news out of the panel, as well as a look at this crazy red band trailer that was showed to Comic-Con patrons.

For those of you excited about a potential third film, here’s how to make that happen: “Robert [Rodriguez] and I are already talking about Sin City 3,” Miller told the Hall H crowd, “so you’d better show up to 2!”

You can check out the red band trailer for the film below, which is about Dwight McCarthy planing to have his vengeance against the woman who betrayed him, Ava Lord, while Nancy is trying to cope with Hartigan’s death. Also, enjoy a strip tease by Jessica Alba.

Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis, Juno Temple, Jaime King, Rosario Dawson, Michael Madsen, Jamie Chung, Dennis Haysbert, Crystal McCahill, Christopher Meloni, Jeremy Piven, Julia Garner, Ray Liotta and Stacy Keach star.

The acclaimed Showetime original series “Penny Dreadful” – Season One will arrive on Blu-ray Disc and DVD October 7, it was announced today during the “Penny Dreadful” panel at San Diego Comic-Con International 2014.

From three-time Oscar nominee John Logan (Skyfall, Hugo, Gladiator) and Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall), “Penny Dreadful” is a frightening psychosexual drama that weaves together classic horror origin stories into a gripping series that is “moody, mystical and wonderfully twisted” (Cleveland Plain Dealer). “Penny Dreadful”, starring Josh Hartnett (Black Hawk Down), Timothy Dalton (The Living Daylights) and Eva Green (Casino), completely reinvents literature’s most famous characters. Icons of terror such as Victor Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and timeless figures from Dracula join a core of original characters in a dark and brutal quest to save a soul – even as they grapple with their own monstrous temptations.

The series also stars Reeve Carney (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), Rory Kinnear (Skyfall), Billie Piper (Doctor Who, Secret Diary of a Call Girl), Danny Sapani (The Bill) and Harry Treadaway (The Lone Ranger). A co-production of Sky Atlantic, “Penny Dreadful” was created, written and executive produced by John Logan and executive produced by Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions, along with Sam Mendes and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road, Call The Midwife), both of Neal Street.

Special Features Include:
Ray Donovan: Season One, Episodes 1 & 2
What is a “Penny Dreadful”?
Literary Roots
Coming Together
The Artisans Pt. 1
The Artisans Pt. 2
The Grand Guignol
Prostitution and Sex in Victorian Times
British Exploration & The Search for the Nile

In fact, many actors/actresses aren’t consulted on completed films and their promotional materials (unless it’s stated in their contract), and in other cases their too busy working on a new project to give a shit.

What that said, I’m actually interested in seeing what Green had to say about the Sin City: A Dame to Kill For poster that was rejected by the MPAA “for nudity — curve of under breast and dark nipple/areola circle visible through sheer gown.”

Via Vanity Fair:

“Oh, my God, I heard about that,” she said of the uproar. “I find it a bit odd. It seems like it’s all just publicity—a lot of noise for nothing. You have so many more violent things in the movie business and this is kind of soft. I’m not naked. It’s suggested.”

“I find it really sexy, actually,” she said. “It’s kind of beautiful. But if it shocks people, I don’t know what to do about it. I don’t want to upset anybody.”

“I don’t want to be seen as just the femme fatale or put into some silly box. I hope that people will have enough imagination.”

Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For opens August 22.

Showtime has picked up a second season of its critically acclaimed drama series “Penny Dreadful”, Bloody Disgusting is told.

The network has given an expanded order of ten episodes to the series.

Created, written and executive produced by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan, “Penny Dreadful” has been embraced by the network’s subscribers, drawing 4.8 million weekly viewers across platforms since its launch.

Starring Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green, “Penny Dreadful” will go into production, and will once again shoot on location in Dublin, Ireland for a 2015 launch.

The fifth episode of the series airing this Sunday at 10 p.m. ET/PT is not to be missed – viewers will learn the shocking truth behind the bond that connects Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Vanessa (Eva Green) and Mina (Olivia Llewellyn). Leading up to this Sunday’s episode, SHOWTIME will air two Penny Dreadful marathons on Saturday, June 7th, before and after the 10 p.m. television premiere of The Last Exorcism Part II. Episodes 101 through 104 of Penny Dreadful will air from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and then again from 11:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. Viewers hoping to catch up on what they’ve missed so far can also watch the first four episodes on Showtime ON DEMAND and Showtime ANYTIME. For a sneak peek at Sunday night’s episode, go to: s.sho.com/1mSeJ9D.

In “Penny Dreadful”, some of literature’s most famous characters – including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula, all brilliantly reimagined in a whole new light – have become embroiled in Victorian London. The series also stars Reeve Carney (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), Rory Kinnear (Skyfall), Harry Treadaway (The Lone Ranger), Danny Sapani (The Bill) and Billie Piper (Doctor Who, Secret Diary of a Call Girl). “Penny Dreadful” is executive produced by John Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions, along with Oscar winner Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall) and Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road, Call The Midwife), both of Neal Street.

Anytime I hear about the MPAA censoring a poster it reminds me of how they forced Universal to remove a single sperm from the one-sheet of the 2004 Seed of Chucky (see it here).

Apparently, Eva Green is just too sexy for the poster of her upcoming sequel to Sin City, or so the MPAA believes. The actress is seen in a sheer robe in the poster for Dimension Films’ and Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For.

Page Six shares the art and reports that the poster was disapproved by the MPAA “for nudity — curve of under breast and dark nipple/areola circle visible through sheer gown.”

Dimension declined to comment but it is believed execs are working on a compromise with the MPAA before the sequel opens August 22.
