Television has reached a curious inflection point where what was once heralded as the medium’s Golden Age has turned into a daunting obligation where there’s far too much content to consume and the lengthy gaps between short seasons is enough to strip away even the most extreme enthusiasm. TV is in an interesting phase at the moment and while many prestige streaming series have struggled, the horror genre has thrived and turned out deeply captivating and creepy material. Television remains a safe haven for the horror genre and 2024 was a strong year for both brand new horror and returning series that are sure to entertain genre fans who are looking for something that will get under their skin.

Here are the 10 best horror television shows of 2024.

American Horror Stories: Season 3, Part 2

Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story has become increasingly cursed and squandered a lot of the goodwill that it established during its earliest seasons, even if there’s still some compelling ideas and strong performances in play. While it’s certainly understandable that some fans have completely written off the franchise, its episodic spin-off has quietly become the superior series and a home for genuinely strong horror that has something to say. American Horror Stories’ third season, which was split across 2023 and 2024’s Halloween seasons, features far and away the series’ strongest episodes. These five new episodes tackle diverse territory between the liminal space horror of “backrooms,” AI clones, boogeymen under the bed, and even a leprechaun bank heist. 

American Horror Story proper is guilty of losing the plot and indulging in camp, but the latter actually feels fitting in American Horror Stories. The spin-off achieves a successful atmosphere where it never takes itself too seriously, but is still able to craft disturbing scares and frightening set pieces. There are still some weak spots among these five episodes, but engaging performances from talented guest actors that include Henry Winkler, Victor Garber, Michael Imperioli, and June Squibb help smooth over the rough patches and evoke a retro Tales From the Crypt energy. If nothing else, it’s exciting to get a mainstream horror series tackling the fringe Backrooms phenomenon. If this happens to be the end of American Horror Stories — which is very likely — it at least goes out on an encouraging note as an anthology series that progressively found its footing.

Joko Anwar’s Nightmares And Daydreams

There’s been an encouraging rise in Indonesian horror over the past five years and Joko Anwar has become a leading name in the genre with impressive projects like Impetigore and Satan’s Slaves and its sequel. 2024 was a busy year for Anwar between his feature film, Grave Torture, and his pulpy anthology horror and sci-fi Netflix series, Nightmares and Daydreams. With so many modern horror anthology series taking a page from Black Mirror, it’s encouraging to see that Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams shares more in common with The Twilight Zone and Tales from the Darkside. Joko Anwar is at the helm for the majority of the anthology series’ seven episodes, all of which effectively deconstruct and explore social issues that are common to Indonesia. All seven episodes are set in Jakarta and span over three decades, which creates an engrossing sense of dread that highlights the haunting futility that afflicts these characters. 

Each episode of Joko Anwar’s Nightmares and Daydreams confidently stands on its own. However, one of the series’ greatest joys is clocking the connections between these stories and how certain supernatural threats and concepts overlap. This reaches an extremely satisfying fever pitch in the final episode, which connects many of the ideas that are introduced throughout the season. The anthology series really sticks the landing in a manner that’s not easy and it ends up feeling like an Indonesian horror Avengers when everything is said and done. Nightmares and Daydreams will provoke and petrify, but audiences are also likely to learn a lot about Indonesian urban legends and paranormal activity. 

Teacup

It should come as no surprise that a horror series that’s executive produced by James Wan and directed by some of the most promising emerging names in horror like E. L. Katz (Cheap Thrills, Azrael) and Chloe Okuno (Watcher and V/H/S/94’s “Storm Drain”) is one of 2024’s most enjoyable horror series. Ian McCulloch’s Teacup stars Yvonne Strahovski and Scott Speedman, who lead an accomplished cast of characters whose humble lives are irrevocably changed when their Georgia farm becomes a lightning rod for unnerving supernatural events and perplexing behavior. 

Teacup coasts on the eerie atmosphere and stark visuals that compliment this eerie, socially-minded mystery. Teacup holds many of its cards to its chest and it’s entirely possible that it will lose its way and fumble the landing in subsequent seasons like From and Sweet Home, two other 2024 horror series who couldn’t match the heights of their previous seasons. As it stands, Teacup is still cryptic and chilling storytelling that feels like Lost meets Salem’s Lot.

The Creep Tapes

Mark Duplass and Patrick Brice’s Creep films are disturbing serial killer character studies that are filtered through the personal found footage horror sub-genre. Both films knock it out of the park and audiences have patiently been waiting seven years for a “Creep 3” that completes the trilogy. The Creep Tapes, a six-episode evolution of the Creep movies, is one of 2024’s most enlightening horror productions that proves that an episodic anthology series has more value than another cinematic sequel that returns to Duplass’ unstable “Peachfuzz” character. The Creep Tapes is very careful to not dilute what made the films so effective and it uses its episodic format to deconstruct not just found footage horror, but the very nature of documentary filmmaking and the complex filmmaker/subject relationship. 

There are admittedly some diminishing returns as each episode of The Creep Tapes builds to a similar climax, but this is a series that perpetually keeps the audience on their toes and feeds on tension and unease. “Peachfuzz” adopts a completely new identity in each episode that’s meant to obfuscate his true self, but in doing so the audience gets a progressively better idea of who he really is and what drives him forward. It’s a bold experiment that pays off and helps reinvent the serial killer chamber piece series in a modern way.

Inside No. 9: Season 9

2024 has been particularly kind to anthology horror and 2025 is set to continue this promising trend. However, one program that’s been turning out back-to-back gems for over a decade is BBC Two’s Inside No. 9. Inside No. 9 ended its flawless nine-season run in 2024 and Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s structural masterpiece proved that they saved some of their best stories for last. Each Inside No. 9 episode tells a completely different story with the only connective tissue being that every installment is set in a different “number nine,” ostensibly turning the series into a collection of challenging and genre-breaking bottle episodes. Inside No. 9 has such a clear and passionate love for horror, but it’s also remarkably funny and its ability to adeptly oscillate between witty comedy and pitch black dread is one of its secret weapons. 

Inside No. 9 loves to push boundaries and some of its most ambitious stories feature a silent episode, an entry that’s entirely told through a CCTV feed, one that’s all told through iambic pentameter, and even a live episode. Inside No. 9’s final season continues to flex its stylistic muscles with an episode that’s all filmed through a fixed doorbell security camera. Season 9 doesn’t have any misses. There’s a bleak meditation on the ethical “trolley problem” thought experiment, a foreboding escape room experiment, and an Edwardian gothic horror story. Its final episode is also a sublime meta gift to the series’ long-time fans, but also sure to resonate with any new viewers. Now is the perfect time to binge all nine seasons and experience one of the best and most under the radar horror anthology series of the past decade.

Parasyte: The Grey

Parasyte: The Maxim is an acclaimed anime that offers top tier horror/science fiction storytelling that received an impressive live-action cinematic adaptation by none other than Takashi Yamazaki, Godzilla Minus One’s director. Rather than simply turn Parasyte into a redundant live-action Netflix series, Parasyte: The Grey tells an original story that’s set in South Korea and runs parallel to the original Parasyte. It’s an approach that’s similar to Terminator Zero’s penetration of the Terminator franchise that grapples with comparable ideas and themes, yet in a totally different portion of the world. 

Parasyte: The Grey focuses on a debilitating alien invasion where these parasitic extraterrestrials can take over humans and use these host bodies to wipe out their population. Anyone who has seen a frame of the Parasyte anime understands that its disturbing body horror is one of its strongest assets. The ways in which these alien parasites contort and eviscerate their human hosts is pure nightmare fuel and Parasyte: The Grey rises to the occasion on this front. The live-action series elegantly captures these monstrous transformations and the excessive gore that accompanies their attacks. The six-episode series excels with its Invasion of the Body Snatchers-esque mystery, yet also finds a way to turn this parasitic possession into an inspirational superpower that can heal as much as it can hurt. Parasyte: The Grey leans into broad extremes and turns a vicious alien invasion into B-movie bliss. 

Chucky: Season 3 Part 2

Revered slasher icons like Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers continue to languish and get sentenced to purgatory over rights disputes and other bureaucratic red tape, all while Chucky accrues a brutal body count that’s seamlessly transitioned from film to television. The Chucky TV series contains some of the franchise’s best material and while the decision to split season three in half was narratively frustrating, it at least meant that Chucky’s chaotic antics could spill over into 2024. Chucky’s White House-set third season turned out to be a rejuvenating change of pace for the unpredictable horror series and its final four episodes accomplish more magic and murder than most series do in twice as many episodes. Jake, Devon, and Lexy continue their prolonged pursuit of Chucky, who proceeds to cause new levels of mayhem. Chucky’s final episodes expand upon the series’ lore in rewarding ways as Chucky comes to terms with his own mortality and the series does some excellent work with Charles Lee Ray, who receives an excellent showcase in the spirit realm as “murderous ghost” gets added to his lengthy resume. 

There’s endless bloodshed and sublime practical gore effects to appreciate in the second-half of Chucky’s third season. However, one of the series’ greatest strengths remains its earnest beating heart and the empathetic relationships between its central trio of characters. The prospect of Chucky with the launch codes for nuclear missiles and the potential to cause global destruction puts him in a whole new tier of horror villain and is reason alone to give these episodes a watch. Chucky, as a TV series, may have reached its end. However, franchise creator Don Mancini has assured fans that they haven’t seen the last of these characters and that everyone’s favorite killer doll still has a lot more blood to spill.

Oh, and there’s plenty more Devon Sawa destruction, because, of course there is. 

Evil: Season 4

Robert and Michelle King’s Evil took 2023 off, only to return in 2024 with a super-sized final season that ostensibly mashes together their plans for seasons four and five. Evil is The X-Files by way of The Exorcist and Black Mirror and more often than not is superior to all three. Evil very quickly tapped into something special through the infectious chemistry that’s shared between Kristen (Katja Herbers), David (Mike Colter), and Ben (Aasif Mandvi) — a forensic psychologist, a Catholic priest, and a tech expert — who are tasked by the Catholic Church to assess potential supernatural events. Evil’s fourth season adopts a greater focus on tech-based anomalies, all while dark forces prepare for an apocalyptic event that revolves around the freshly-born Antichrist. 

Evil’s farewell year may not necessarily provide answers to every question, but it’s a season that’s unabashedly confident and brave enough to go out on its own terms. It’s fearless television that’s haunting, hilarious, and endlessly human. These final episodes tackle big ideas like a particle accelerator that may or may not be a gate to Hell, djinn-fueled fugue states, and demonically-possessed ChatBots. However, Evil never forgets its initial mission statement or its natural curiosity to help and heal in a world that’s on the cusp of being ripped apart at the seams. Andrea Martin’s demon-stomping Sister Andrea is also truly a performance for the ages that will be missed.

Interview With The Vampire: Season 2

Vampires make up some of the horror genre’s most popular monsters and 2024 alone saw the release of Abigail, Nosferatu, and Salem’s Lot. Audiences were initially skeptical when a serialized adaptation of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire made its debut on AMC in 2022. Now it’s the center of the Immortal Universe and one of TV’s finest dramas, horror or otherwise. Interview with the Vampire’s eight-episode second season is a beautiful expansion of the gothic horror and toxic relationship dynamics that made the first season must-watch television. Lestat (Sam Reid) takes a bit of a backseat role in season two as Louis (Jacob Anderson) and Armand’s (Assad Zaman) relationship develops in destructive ways. Season two also takes Louis and Claudia (Delainey Hayles) to Paris and immerses them among Old World Vampires and their Theatre Des Vampires troupe. 

It’s par the course to turn vampire stories into meditations on abuse and power dynamics, but none have been as delicate and daring as Interview with the Vampire. The season’s climax is truly powerful television that broaches suicide and codependency with the blunt, raw force of a stake to the heart. Interview the Vampire’s third season, which is set to adapt the second book in Anne Rice’s celebrated series — The Vampire Lestat — will hopefully continue to tap into nuanced, emotional horror excellence in 2025. Interview with the Vampire’s second season isn’t just the strongest horror series of 2024, but one of the best pieces of vampire media that’s ever been produced. It sets new, lofty standards for the scary, sexy sub-genre.

The series, which recently began production in New York City on the previously announced four bonus episodes, will premiere Thursday, May 23, exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada, and on the following day in Australia, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The 14 never-before-seen episodes will premiere weekly.

In the upcoming season, Kristen, David and Ben continue to assess cases that involve wayward technology, possessed pigs, demonic oppression and infestation, a dance muse conjured by alleged witches and an evil relic. Throughout, Leland attempts to lure Kristen into raising a baby antichrist who was conceived with her ovum.

David is recruited by the Vatican’s secret service to “remote view” a paranormal ability to see the unseen in order to detect evil. Ben is hit by an ion beam, causing him to see visions of a taunting jinn until he discovers an unusual solution to banish it. Finally, all three realize they only have a few weeks left to assess cases because the parish has decided to disband the team due to a lack of funds. This culminates in one last confrontation with Leland and the 60 families that make up Evil in the modern world.

The series stars Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, Aasif Mandvi, Michael Emerson, Kurt Fuller, Andrea Martin, Christine Lahti, Brooklyn Shuck, Skylar Gray, Maddy Crocco and Dalya Knapp.

Per Deadline, the Paramount+ horror series from creators Robert King and Michelle King has been canceled and there will be no fifth season. The silver lining here is that the streamer has ordered four additional bonus episodes to wrap up the storylines.

Shining Vale

The inaugural season of this Starz series used classic horror homages to comedic effect to capture domestic dysfunction. At the center of it is actress Courteney Cox, playing against type as a floundering author whose life is spiraling in the wake of an affair and a midlife crisis. The atypical characters and repurposed iconic horror scenes transform the familiar family sitcom format into a unique, era-bending horror-comedy depiction of inner demons. Written by series creator Jeff Astrof from a story he wrote with co-creator Sharon Horgan, “Shining Vale” adheres to the familiar beats of haunted house and possession horror. What makes it feel fresh is the blending of horror and television influences, along with Cox’s central performance. She’s aided by an equally engaging performance by Mira Sorvino as the devious ghost Rosemary.

1899

The minds behind the mind-bending Netflix series “Dark” are back with another twisty, atmospheric series, this time aboard a ghost ship. The period piece follows various passengers on the cross-Atlantic ship when a mysterious signal from the sister ship Prometheus appears after being lost at sea for months. The endless twists and turns in store mean the season winds up in a vastly different place than where it began, keeping you guessing the entire time. If you’re in the mood for moody supernatural mysteries and fantastic production design, “1899” brings both in spades.

Interview with the Vampire

The premiere episode of this new adaptation of Anne Rice’s 1976 novel shifts from 1910 New Orleans to 2022 Dubai, indicating the series’ expansive scope and ambition. This iteration establishes Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) as a Black man struggling to run a business in 1910, and navigating life becomes even more complicated once he meets the seductive vampire Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid). “Interview with the Vampire” adds new layers to Rice’s already complex characters, and Anderson and Reid are more than up to the task of making them compelling to watch. Its modern sensibilities, scale, and cast inject new life into a familiar story.

Servant (Season 3)

The Turner family may have restored order to their home by the end of season two, but it derailed again quickly in the third season of the M. Night Shyamalan-produced series created by Tony Basgallop. Murder, paranoia, cults, kidnapping plots, and Leanne’s enigmatic powers and persona continue to create barely contained insanity within the Philadelphia brownstone, presenting yet another remarkable showcase for this highly talented cast. “Servant” has a unique way of drawing you in despite relentlessly withholding answers. Season three made for a much more focused and even outing than season two, serving as a satisfying setup for the upcoming final season.

What We Do in the Shadows (Season 4)

Season four brought significant growing pains and transitions for our favorite Staten Island vampires. The housemates returned to find their mansion in a state of complete disarray and Laszlo (Matt Berry) acting as the guardian for a now baby Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch). Nandor (Kayvan Novak) begins his quest for matrimony, Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) opens a club, and Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) searches for his family. It allows the fourth season to expand the supernatural world in poignant and hilarious ways.

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities

Guillermo del Toro assembles a Murderers’ Row of horror filmmakers for his limited anthology series, and each story is contained within his ornate oddities cabinet. The episodes range from the macabre to classic frights to the fantastical, all sending its central characters on unexpected journeys. The roster of talent on display is incredible, and that reflects in the series’ quality. The impeccable craftsmanship never wavers throughout, ensuring favorites vary vastly based on narrative preference. Panos Cosmatos’ “The Viewing” eschews the norm in favor of a face-melting vibe, making for an impressive stand-out. The quiet introspections that dabble in cosmic or existential horrors play like a soothing yet haunting vintage scary story collection.

Love, Death, + Robots (Volume III)

Tim Miller’s animated anthology series unites various art styles and genres in an easily digestible format. The sheer range makes for an infectious grab bag for all tastes and moods. Robert Bisi & Andy Lyon’s “Night of the Mini Dead,” for example, chronicles an entire zombie apocalypse entirely through sped-up miniatures in the most charming way. Seven director David Fincher’s “Bad Travelling” spins a graphic creature feature at sea, while sci-fi embraces Lovecraftian horror when marines face Cthulhu in Jerome Chen’s “In Vaulted Halls Entombed.” It’s creative bite-sized shorts via stunning animation.

Evil (Season 3)

“Evil” Season 3 continues the series’ unpredictable streak. It picks up where season two ended when a newly ordained David (Mike Colter) and a married Kristen (Katja Herbers) kiss. In season three, the two will have to explore this development and grapple with David’s new role within the Catholic Church. The series’ ability to subvert expectations and conventions of a biblical Good vs. Evil procedural never ceases to amaze; there’s zero guessing about what zany new encounters with evil are in store for its protagonists. The creature designs behind the series’ demons also never fail to impress. If you thought the well had run dry on horror rooted in Catholicism, this zany horror show will convince you otherwise.

Chucky (Season 2)

Series creator Don Mancini and team upped the ante for season two of “Chucky,” and it’s apparent in every facet of this infectious series that they all had an absolute blast in the process. Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur), Devon (Bjorgvin Arnarson), and Lexy (Alyvia Alyn Lind) undergo tremendous growing pains thanks to their ongoing battle with Chucky and the authorities at their Catholic boarding school. It makes them more resilient, mature, and ready to beat Chucky at his lethal game. Season two also introduced a ton of Chucky-on-Chucky violence, but Tiffany’s (Jennifer Tilly) complex arc this season surprised the most. Mancini continues the evolution of his franchise in unexpected ways while demonstrating no shortage of creativity behind Chucky’s gnarly kills. Here’s hoping Season 3 is on the way next year.

EPIX introduced a captivating and nightmarish mystery box series from the minds behind event television series like “Lost” and “Alias.” “From” wastes no time establishing the horror; an opening sequence sees a quaint town rushing to shutter all windows and doors before nightfall. We then see why when a young girl hears a tapping at her second-story bedroom at night by an older woman claiming to be her grandmother. The aftermath is shockingly gory. Cut to a family of four traveling by RV, who soon find themselves trapped in this strange town. They’re the latest among residents who’ll have to adapt to survive both the monsters lurking in the dark and the bizarre phenomena that plague this mysterious place. Propulsive thrills, endless questions, and complex characters combine for a captivating modern horror fairy tale with sharp teeth. We can’t wait for season two.

Honorable Mentions…

The gory, pitch-black superhero show “The Boys” may not qualify as horror, but it’s adjacent enough thanks to its bloodletting and remains at the peak of quality TV. And the animated spinoff “The Boys Presents: Diabolical” ran the gamut in styles and genres, ensuring we’ll sign up for whatever this unhinged universe throws us next.

An insightful account of the genre’s history with queer representation, Shudder’s “Queer for Fear” docuseries was fascinating on its own, but candid conversations with talking heads like Osgood Perkins elevated it to poignant heights.

“Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin” went full throttle on ’90s slasher homages to an entertaining degree.

I’d also be remiss not to bid farewell to the enduring “The Walking Dead“; but thanks to a slew of upcoming spinoffs, it’s not truly goodbye.

The Baby – HBO Max

This eight-episode limited series premiered on April 24, with new episodes dropping every Sunday. “Michelle De Swarte (The Duchess) stars as 38-year-old Natasha, who is furious that her closest friends are all having babies. But when she is unexpectedly landed with a baby of her own, her life dramatically implodes.

“Controlling, manipulative, but incredibly cute, the baby twists Natasha’s life into a surreal horror show. As she discovers the true extent of the baby’s deadly nature, Natasha makes increasingly desperate attempts to get rid of it. She doesn’t want a baby. But the baby definitely wants her.”

Love Death + Robots Volume 3 – May 20 (Netflix)

The adult animation anthology returns with a new volume featuring nine new stories, including Se7en director David Fincher’s first foray into the medium. “Terror, imagination and beauty combine in new episodes which stretch from uncovering an ancient evil to a comedic apocalypse, telling startling short stories of fantasy, horror, and science-fiction with trademark wit and visual invention.”

Stranger Things Season Four: Part 1 – May 27 (Netflix)

Expect a massive “Stranger Things” summer; so huge that Netflix is splitting the fourth season into two halves. “It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. The Boys Season 3 – June 3 (Prime Video)

The hyper violent series is back! “The Boys” (based on the best-selling comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson) puts a bold, fresh and bloody new spin on the superhero genre, centered on a group of vigilantes who set out to take down corrupt superheroes.

First Kill – June 10 (Netflix)

A YA vampire series from executive producer Emma Roberts. A supernatural Romeo and Juliet, perhaps? The plot: “When it’s time for teenage vampire Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) to make her first kill so she can take her place among a powerful vampire family, she sets her sights on a new girl in town named Calliope (Imani Lewis). But much to Juliette’s surprise, Calliope is a vampire hunter, from a family of celebrated slayers. Both find that the other won’t be so easy to kill and, unfortunately, way too easy to fall for.”

Evil Season 3 – June 12 (Paramount+)

The unpredictable, demonically entertaining series is back. Season 3 begins moments after the end of season two: when a newly ordained David and Kristen kiss. Dark Winds – June 12 (AMC)

A psychological thriller/noir series from “Castle Rock” showrunner Vince Calandra, executive produced by George R.R. Martin. The Plot: “Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Dark Winds follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon, Doctor Sleep) of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon, “Roswell, New Mexico”). Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil, each other and their own personal demons on the path to salvation.”

Westworld Season 4 – June 26 (HBO)

The mind-bending world of this HBO series is about to get a whole lot weirder with new AI nightmares. “Set in a futuristic Wild West fantasy park, a group of android ‘hosts’ deviates from their programmers’ carefully planned scripts in a disturbing pattern of aberrant behavior. With an exceptional cast headed by Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandiwe Newton and Jeffrey Wright, Westworld was inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1973 film.”

Stranger Things Season Four: Part 2 – July 1 (Netflix)

This is it. Wellington Paranormal Season 3 – June 22 (CW and HBO Max)

The third season of the What We Do in the Shadows spinoff has already aired in New Zealand, but it finally airs this summer in the US. Created by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, “the story follows the adventures of Officer Kyle Minogue and Officer O’Leary. The pair are hard-working members of the Wellington constabulary’s paranormal unit who investigate supernatural occurrences that arise in the capital of New Zealand on a surprisingly regular basis.“

Resident Evil – July 14 (Netflix)

Netflix aims to redefine the legendary Resident Evil franchise with a brand new series that introduces new faces, set in the year 2036. “14 years after a deadly virus caused a global apocalypse, Jade Wesker fights for survival in a world overrun by the blood-thirsty infected and insane creatures. In this absolute carnage, Jade is haunted by her past in New Raccoon City, by her father’s chilling connections to the Umbrella Corporation but mostly by what happened to her sister, Billie.”

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous Season 5 – July 21 (Netflix)

The final season of the animated series spinoff is here. In Season 5, “The arrival of Kenji’s father, Mr. Kon, renews hope of a rescue for the campers. But as the nefarious plans of Mantah Corp. come into focus and one of the Camp Fam turns on their own, the others must band together if they want to save the dinosaurs and ever make it home.” 

House of the Dragon – August 21 (HBO Max)

“Game of Thrones” is back with a prequel series. Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” which is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, “House of the Dragon” tells the story of House Targaryen. Check out the poster and teaser here.

Here are 2021’s most memorable TV and movie monsters!

The Suicide Squad – King Shark

The apparent creature default in James Gunn’s delightfully violent anti-superhero movie is, understandably, Starro, the alien Kaiju with a talent for gruesome mind control tactics. But Starro didn’t capture hearts quite the same way as King Shark, played by Steve Agee and voiced by Sylvester Stallone. The man-eating shark-human hybrid proved challenging to kill and even more formidable in appetite. What he lacks in intellect he makes up for in heart; King Shark just wants to not feel alone in the world. He’s just as likely to rip you apart, though. Nom nom.

Godzilla vs. Kong – King Kong

Whether you’re on team Godzilla or team Kong, the giant ape wins in terms of sympathy. His bond with child Jia (Kaylee Hottle) brings the pathos in this high-stakes battle, as does his need for a permanent home away from human captors. While ultimately the underdog in his grudge match, which we’re always a sucker for, the expressive Kong comes into his own in Hollow Earth. All of that would warrant his spot alone, but the Kaiju earns bonus points for axe-wielding spectacle.

Army of the Dead – Alpha Queen

Zack Snyder’s Las Vegas heist meets zombie movie leveled up with an alien twist to the undead outbreak. The horde within the city is far more organized thanks to a hierarchy ruled by the more intelligent Alpha and his Alpha Queen. The intelligence, the animalistic screeches and movements, and the glitzy costuming of her past life make the Alpha Queen one of the most compelling characters. It also helps that she’s got a pet zombie tiger at her disposal.

The Vigil – Mazzik

Sometimes all it takes to freshen up a familiar formula or subgenre is introducing untapped mythology. Enter the Mazzik, a demon of Talmudic mythology. In The Vigil, the Mazzik feeds off the suffering of its host. Considering the demonic parasite’s decades-long host died, the Mazzik sets its claws on an unwitting Shomer who’s harboring a lot of guilt and grief of his own. The Vigil gives glimpses of its demon, enough to make an impression. The concept and mythology behind it drive it all home.

“Evil” – Demons

You can’t narrow it down to just one demonic entity in this fantastic and wildly underseen series that works as a revolving door of excellent creature design. Every single one deserves this spot, and season two brought the goods. A forensic psychologist, Catholic seminarian, and tech whiz find themselves navigating bizarre criminal cases intertwined with supernatural and Hellish forces. Luckily “Evil” takes great care in its demon designs, ensuring no shortage of memorable and unique denizens of Hell.

“Chucky” – Doll Army

Don Mancini brought the pint-sized horror icon to the small screen to continue where Cult of Chucky ended, exploring Chucky’s plan behind splintering his soul across numerous Good Guy dolls. Each one feels slightly different than the rest, more like newborn killers. That doesn’t even touch on the surprise finale reintroduction of a fan favorite. Between the number of killer dolls and the quality of kills, this Good Guy doll army spoiled us in terms of fun.

PG: Psycho Goreman – The Archduke of Nightmares himself     

The eponymous alien conqueror imprisoned on Earth meets his match when a sociopathic child unearths then subjugates him. But his awakening alerts the intergalactic council that locked him away in the first place, putting a bounty on his head. That means that Steven Kostanski introduces a slew of distinct alien killers to pit against PG, including his former army, the Paladins of Obsidian. But it’s PG’s personality and gory punishments that stand out above the rest in this wacky horror-comedy.

Antlers – Wendigo

An opening scene sees a young boy’s father attacked by an unseen creature in the mines. He survives, but it begins a slow transformation into a Wendigo. That happens slowly in stages until a creature effects-heavy third act reveals a wholly monstrous Wendigo without a trace of humanity left. The 10-foot tall monster induces all the awe and terror you’d want in a horror movie finale, enough to leave you clamoring for more full-throttle Wendigo carnage.

No One Gets Out Alive – Ītzpāpālōtl 

Much of No One Gets Out Alive plays like a familiar haunted house story, save for a few critical clues that something’s amiss. Namely, a strange box that lurks in the shadows. The final act reveals its contents; the Aztec goddess Ītzpāpālōtl. The goddess, whose name translates as “obsidian butterfly” or “clawed butterfly,” requires ritualistic sacrifices to remain satiated, and her arrival is a sight to behold. We can thank creature designer Keith Thomas for one of the year’s most unconventional and unique movie monsters. Thomas also happens to be behind another fan-favorite creature; the artist designed Raatma for the Bloody Disgusting produced V/H/S/94 segment “Storm Drain.”

Malignant – Gabriel

James Wan wanted to give his spin on Giallo, and the result was a wild ’90s throwback that delivered the year’s most talked-about monstrous villain, Gabriel. The parasitic twin could control electricity and broadcast his thoughts through speakers. Gabriel’s short temper and deep-seated grudges sent him on a path of murderous revenge, holding his twin hostage to do it. Malignant and Gabriel dominated social media discussion upon release and still have fans clamoring for more. Gabriel might be Horror’s “Person” of the Year, more than just a movie monster.

This week’s streaming picks belong to current series worth catching up on, from eccentric supernatural mysteries to biblically-based nightmares. They’re ongoing, which means you can binge all at once until the next season’s release or pace out the episodes.

30 Coins – HBO Max

Álex de la Iglesia’s series follows Father Vergara (Eduard Fernández), an ex-convict, boxer, and exorcist exiled by the church to be the priest for a remote village in Spain after an exorcism gone wrong. He uses his new post as a means of repressing his past, but that proves tricky when the town becomes under siege by a series of increasingly bizarre events. A cow gives birth to a human baby. Villagers hear voices and turn to aggression. Ouija boards come with added dangers, and reality distorts with increasing frequency. Judas’ 30 pieces of silver paid for Jesus’s betrayal is at the center of it all. They’ll have to team up to fight the forces of Hell and the covert religious organization aiming to collect all 30 coins. Biblical horror has never been as wild or with such creative designs for its entities. While it officially hasn’t been renewed yet for a second season, it’s clear that it’s meant to continue.

Inside No. 9 – Hulu, Britbox

Inside No. 9 is probably one of the greatest shows you’re not watching; if you live outside of the U.K. Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s anthology series doesn’t get enough attention stateside. Each 30-minute episode sees the two playing different characters in self-contained stories that run the gamut in style and genre. Pitch black humor tends to run through it all, but episodes vary from gothic to slapstick to flat-out petrifying. No matter the tone, Shearsmith and Pemberton make excellent use of misdirection and always bring the unexpected. Whether genre-centric or genre-adjacent, Inside No. 9 will delight the horror fan regardless. Hulu offers only some of the seasons to binge, while Britbox provides it all.

Nancy Drew – HBO Max

If you grew up with Scooby-Doo or already miss the weekly monster adventures of Supernatural, Nancy Drew offers up the perfect solution. This series follows a more mature version of the teen detective marred by tragedy. Struggling to find direction, Nancy gets drawn into a murder mystery heavily entrenched in the supernatural. The teen sleuth and her often reluctant cohorts frequently get drawn into various cases that put their lives on the line in their seaside town, from deadly curses to child-devouring Lamias and beyond. The series even sprinkles in some fun creatures, and unexpected jump scares.

Evil – Netflix (S1 only), Paramount+

The series follows a skeptical psychologist (Katja Herbers) enlisted by a priest-in-training (Mike Colter) and his tech specialist (Aasif Mandvi) to investigate miracles, possessions, and extraordinary cases. What makes Evil so special is its unique ability to dramatically shift between tones, from absurdist humor to genuine scares, with organic ease. Also impressive is how the series incorporates technology and psychology to cover all aspects of the supernatural. Of course, the creature/demon design is a significant plus. Evil kicked off on CBS but made its move to Paramount+ for season two, and it will be back for an upcoming third season.

Servant – Apple TV+

Created by Tony Basgallop and executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan, Servant follows Philadelphia couple Dorothy and Sean Turner (Lauren Ambrose and Toby Kebbell) mourning the tragic loss of their infant. Dorothy’s profound denial results in her belief that her reborn doll is real, and the couple hires a new nanny Leanne (Nell Tiger Free) to care for it. There’s something extraordinary about Leanne, however, and their lives will never be the same. A psychological horror that keeps its secrets close to its vest, Servant’s distinct atmospheric style will keep you hooked. Above all, it always keeps you guessing, throwing supernaturally driven surprises at you at every turn.

Here’s the densely packed 2020 television slate in review.

The Discoveries

This section belongs to series that premiered in late 2019 and found renewed interest on streaming, or they spread by prolonged word of mouth.

Evil (CBS)

The 13-episode inaugural season of this CBS show premiered in September 2019 and ended in late January. Evil received a home release in June, but its Netflix drop in October generated the most buzz. Gone Too Soon

The graveyard of fallen shows that received cancellations after their season run this year, many of which still cut deep. Consider this section a celebration of these genre series and a reminder to support your faves while it counts the most.

I Am Not Okay with This (Netflix)

This short 7-episode series premiered on Netflix in February and was the first of the year to explore the coming-of-age tale through exploding teens. Sophia Lillis starred as Sydney, a teenage girl navigating the trials and tribulations of high school while dealing with her family’s complexities, her budding sexuality, and mysterious superpowers just beginning to awaken deep within her. As heartfelt as it is bloody, with a fantastic supporting performance by Wyatt Oleff, I Am Not Okay with This was a critical darling and worthwhile adaptation of a YA novel. What was a shoo-in for renewal instead became a severe casualty of the pandemic.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (Showtime)

Four years after Penny Dreadful’s far-too-soon wrap-up, creator Josh Logan introduced a spin-off set in 1938 Los Angeles. Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) become embroiled in a gruesome murder case that serves as the connective tissue to a broader tale of history, social issues, and Mexican-American folklore. Despite familiar faces from the original series and a new, complicated set of supernatural characters, City of Angels failed to resonate and received a cancellation after its 10-episode run.

Helstrom (Hulu)

This standalone Marvel series followed Daimon and Ana Helston (Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon), two estranged siblings with unique gifts. Through very different means, the pair tracks down humanity’s worst while trying to solve the broken family’s demonic mysteries. The 10-episode inaugural season failed to impress critics, though it did land with viewers- just not enough to earn a second season renewal in a year where the competition was fierce.

NOS4A2 (AMC)

Series creator Jami O’Brien expanded upon Joe Hill’s novel for season two in a big way, opening up the world of inscapes to introduce more characters and superpowers. The second season also expanded upon Charlie Manx’s (Zachary Quinto) backstory and his history with daughter Millie (Mattea Conforti), while continuing his battle with protagonist Vic McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings) and her family. The good news is that the season successfully wrapped up the story arc from the novel. The bad news is that we’ll miss out on future visits with Christmasland and creepy new villains of the inscape world due to cancellation.

The Outsider (HBO)

An adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, The Outsider followed the investigation of a boy’s gruesome murder in the Georgia woods and the mysterious force surrounding the case. The 10-episode series was a major hit with critics and viewers and boasted an impressive cast led by Ben Mendelsohn, Cynthia Erivo, and Jason Bateman. The Outsider originated as a limited series adaptation. While HBO bought and launched it as a drama series, the network ultimately decided to keep it as a limited series after hearing the pitch for season two. So, The Outsider exists in that weird space between limited series and a canceled series, with King having reportedly given his blessing for the Season 2 storyline.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix)

Series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa adapted his comic books to create a very different vehicle for the teen witch. In a dark coming-of-age story, Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) navigates humans and occult worlds while confronting the evil forces that threaten her loved ones. She’s been to literal Hell and back and encountered demons and witches of all types over the three seasons that have aired so far. Netflix announced that it would not renew the series ahead of its season four premiere on December 31, 2020, but at least it seems fans will receive closure. It’s a small comfort for a series that opened its doors to all types of horror, including the Lovecraftian terrors teased in last season’s finale.

Limited Series

If you’re worried about getting too attached to shows in fear of cancellation or you’re just plain short on time, the limited series tells a complete, self-contained story without much commitment necessary. These series won’t extend beyond their initial runs, allowing you to binge and enjoy at your leisure without worrying about the future.

Dracula (BBC One/Netflix)

The year kicked off with a bold take on Bram Stoker’s 1897 classic, one not too interested in adhering faithfully to its source material. The feature-length, 3-episode run followed Dracula (Claes Bang) from his Eastern Europe origins to his battles with Van Helsing’s descendants and beyond. Dolly Wells threatened to steal the entire show as the feisty Sister Agatha Van Helsing, but the gore certainly helped quite a bit. If you thought you’d grown tired of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, this series shook things up in a surprising way.

The Third Day (HBO)

For fans of Midsommar and similar folk horror, The Third Day followed a man and a woman’s separate journeys to a mysterious island off the British coast. In the first half of the 6-episode series, Sam (Jude Law) discovers a group of islanders dead set on preserving their way of life at any cost. Their secrets and bizarre rituals force him to confront his trauma, and he finds himself unable to leave. The second half follows Naomie Harris’s Helen, a woman who comes to the island determined to find answers. Instead, she finds herself in a perilous fight for survival. The Third Day does offer a familiar entry in folk horror, but it’s well-executed and full of enchanting mysteries that engross you anyway.

The Stand (CBS All Access)

The limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s epic novel has only just begun on CBS All Access. A new reimagining that shakes up the story in structure, featuring flashbacks within flashbacks, expect storylines to get cut while others get expanded upon in unique ways. Well cast, this iteration puts its characters first over the stakes in the ultimate battle of good versus evil. How it all shakes up, in the end, remains to be seen, but it’s interesting how creators Benjamin Cavell and Josh Boone skip over the pandemic setup and any hand-holding for The Stand novices. In other words, this is likely a limited series best suited for Constant Readers.

The Haunting of Bly Manor (Netflix)

Mike Flanagan bid adieu to the Crain family and skipped across the pond to reimagine the literary works of Henry James. Netflix’s new season uses The Turn of the Screw as the main story, in which a young American nanny (Victoria Pedretti) cares for orphaned children in the haunted Bly Manor. Look for several of James’ ghost stories woven into this Gothic romance that will pull at your heartstrings by season’s end.

The Boys (Prime Video)

The second season of Eric Kripke’s The Boys upped the ante on the violence, gore, and complicated character arcs without losing its irreverent, biting humor. Sure, it’s not horror in the traditional sense, but its gleeful use of splatstick puts it firmly in the realm of genre that horror fans will love. Season two slowed down its release strategy, dropping the first three episodes at once before settling into a weekly format. The ire it drew from fans who couldn’t wait to see the next is another sign of how addictive the show is. Season two ends on some surprising revelations and cliffhangers for a new season, and luckily, it’s already been renewed for season three.

What We Do in The Shadows (FX)

What We Do in The Shadows didn’t just avoid the sophomore slump; it blew past it with such infectious style, humor, and heart, setting a new bar for perfection. Vampires Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja, and Colin Robinson made us fall even harder in love with their charm and hijinks throughout their encounters with rival vampires, witches, and trolls. Guillermo grappled with his place in the house amidst the revelation that he descended from Van Helsing. Throw in even more surprising guest stars, and you have a show that makes it impossible not to love.

The New Class

These are the brand-spanking-new series that premiered in 2020. These shows showcased how diverse the genre can be while drumming up a lot of engagement, viewership, and discussion. Mostly, though, they brought a lot of fun.

Cursed Films (Shudder)

Jay Cheel’s documentary series explores the myths, stories, and legends surrounding some of horror’s most notoriously cursed productions. Over the inaugural 5-episode season, Cheel assembles a variety of talking heads, candid discussion, and footage to expose the truth behind the curses of The Exorcist, The Omen, Poltergeist, The Crow, and Twilight Zone: The Movie. The result is an oft-heartbreaking realization that behind superstition lies a human cost.

Ju-On: Origins (Netflix)

Like the film franchise that inspired it, this 6-episode origin series followed an ensemble cast across time – all tethered to the infamous house. Even by season’s end, it’s not entirely clear what the story is about or where it’s headed, save for its rumination on the horrors that men inflict on those around them. Still, it’s a bold entry that eschews the franchise’s most popular characters in favor of forging new ground. Most of all, it brings about some unnerving and visceral horror via practical effects, courtesy of Screaming Mad George.

Locke & Key (Netflix)

The 10-episode inaugural season kickstarted the Locke saga from Joe Hill’s popular comic series, finally, after many failed attempts in the past. After their father is murdered under mysterious circumstances, the three Locke siblings and their mother move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, which they discover is full of magical keys that may be connected to their father’s death. While it makes some significant departures from Hill’s source story, Locke & Key successfully invokes the comics’ imagery. It goes heavy on the fantasy-horror. If you’re a fan, you’re in luck as it was just renewed for a third season ahead of season two’s premiere.

Lovecraft Country (HBO)

The series with the biggest buzz belongs to this adaptation of Matt Ruff’s novel by series creator Misha Green. It follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) in his quest to find his father during the 1950s, a time of segregation and social upheaval, but with many Lovecraftian beasties and terror thrown in for added complications. While Lovecraft Country has a lot to say, it’s also winsome for its cast, monsters and cinematic visuals.

Monsterland (Hulu)

Based upon the short story collection North American Lake Monsters: Stories by Nathan Ballingrud, this anthology series runs the gamut in style and tone. Mostly, though, it’s bleak as hell with a stark reminder that humans remain the worst possible type of monster. In other words, it’s not a series you want to binge unless you’re in the mood for despair. Like most anthologies, episodes will vary by taste and quality.

Raised by Wolves (HBO)

From executive producer Ridley Scott, Raised by Wolves centers on two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious virgin planet. It’s highly ambitious, cerebral sci-fi that feels very much at home in the Alien universe, though entirely unconnected. Raised by Wolves may feature an alien planet, gruesome deaths, and even some alien lifeforms, but expect this to instead get heady with its ruminations on religion. You can expect the weirdness to continue, as the series received a second season renewal.

Warrior Nun (Netflix)

This pulpy occult action series gives a fun twist to demonic possession and Vatican conspiracies based on a comic series. A singular, silly Hero’s journey with a witty teen antihero transforms into an epic, ensemble story that’s refreshingly ballsy and mature in the way it tackles oft controversial subject matter. After waking up in a morgue, an orphaned teen discovers she now possesses superpowers as the chosen Halo Bearer for a secret sect of demon-hunting nuns. In other words, expect an action-heavy series that will appeal to Buffy fans. Season one ended on a major cliffhanger, but luckily season two is on its way.

Starring “Luke Cage’s” Mike Colter and “Manhattan’s” Katja Herbers,  the series focuses on a skeptical female clinical psychologist who joins a priest-in-training and a blue-collar contractor as they investigate supposed miracles, demonic possessions, and other extraordinary occurrences to see if there’s a scientific explanation or if something truly supernatural is at work.

Now, we already have a promotional trailer that looks hella good. While there’s not much in the sense of plot, it looks in the vein of “The Exorcist” and promises plenty of death and demons. Watch for a premiere date most likely this fall.

Each situation we come across in life offers a choice on how we act, whether it be for the betterment of ourselves or those around us or if we become a little naughty and choose to let the devil on our shoulder do the talking.
