The neo-noir home invasion action thriller will be released on Digital February 10 via Bloody Disgusting’s parent company, Cineverse.

It follows a couple driven to carry out a series of high-end heists to pay off a dangerous mob debt. When their latest break-in — targeting a prominent defense attorney — spirals out of control, the pair find themselves caught in a web of secrets, deception, and deadly consequences.

Oliver Trevena (Plane) also stars. Lacy McClory penned the script.

Production began this month in Belfast, with Jordan Downey (The Head Hunter, ThanksKilling) directing from a script he co-wrote with collaborators Jackson Murray and Kevin Stewart.

The film follows a futuristic soldier (Bakalova) who is left for dead. But with the help of a synthetic angel (Grillo) — the latest in battlefield A.I. — she must fight against the clock to survive a mortal wound.

James Harris from Tea Shop Productions (Fall, 47 Meters Down) is producing alongside Michael Downey (The Big Ugly). It was financed by Christian Mercuri’s Capstone.

Capture, the sales company launched earlier this year as a joint venture between Capstone Global and Signature Entertainment, will present the film to buyers at the upcoming American Film Market.

Override is a reunion of sorts for Grillo and Bakalova, who both lend their voices James Gunn’s adult animated superhero series “Creature Commandos.”

Downey’s previously film, The Cycle, is due out in 2026 from Shudder.

Written by Matthew Kennedy, Werewolves introduces a world where a supermoon triggered a gene mutation that transforms people into werewolves if they step out into the moonlight. One year later, with another supermoon looming, Dr. Aranda and a team of experts that includes Dr. Wesley Marshall (Grillo) and Dr. Amy Chen (Katrina Law) make their final tests on “moonscreen,” a spray substance meant to protect human skin from moonlight, therefore preventing their transformation.

But the test goes catastrophically awry, prompting Marshall and Chen to fight their way across a werewolf-filled town so Marshall can reunite and protect sister-in-law Lucy (Ilfenesh Hadera) and niece Emma (Kamdynn Gary) from potential werewolf danger. And they’ll have to avoid the supermoon while doing so.

The very concept of “moonscreen” is enough to paint a clear picture of the type of fun Werewolves has in mind. Yet, if that’s not clear enough, Miller takes it a step further by delivering werewolves with personality. Tapping the endless talents of Studio Gillis to bring the werewolves to life through captivating practical effects, these feral, diseased beasts retain a semblance of their human selves in look. In other words, it’s not just their design that makes them impressive, but each one is given a unique identity through costuming and styling. One easy highlight is Law’s Chen facing off against a female werewolf, a punk rocker with a septum ring and a bright red shock of hair. Another sports American red, white, and blue face paint, a clever means that bypasses any budgetary constraints, allowing the crew to repurpose werewolf suits without sacrificing character. And these are well-designed werewolves with character.

Where Werewolves falters is in its split focus. Miller’s latest is at its best when following the scientists’ chaotic journey home, delivering no shortage of harrowing encounters and gory kills. Smart editing doesn’t just highlight the werewolf action but maintains a propulsive pace. That screeches to a halt when shifting back to the Marshall household to check in on Lucy and Emma, who don’t have much to do but sit inside and hope the werewolves don’t huff and puff and break down their door. Their lack of urgency fails to provide much in the way of stakes, either. There’s not enough characterization or plotting here to make this plot thread anywhere close to as gripping as Marshall and Chen’s survival bid.

Also distracting is the excessive lens flair use, a style choice that detracts from fully appreciating the werewolf carnage and Grillo’s action talents. It’s easy to forgive, though, when Miller escalates the mayhem with an ambitious battle in the rain. Also appreciable is the efficiency of storytelling. Werewolves is very light on narrative or depth, letting the action do the heavy lifting. Once the expositional preamble is out of the way, Miller and crew waste no time getting straight to the show: werewolves unleashed.

It’s not deep, nor should it bear those expectations, and it’s not dense in narrative. Instead, Werewolves is lean action horror movie that simply wants to deliver on its title. Grillo always makes for an effective action hero and is more than game to brawl with giant beasts and get doused in buckets of blood in the process, but the real stars here are the wolves. The gangly, monstrous beasts were crafted by hand with fully articulated animatronic faces. It makes for a throwback B-movie with ambition, one that offers silly, straightforward, fun, as well as awe-inducing creature work.

Werewolves releases in theaters on December 6, 2024.

Thanks to Miller’s posts on Twitter yesterday and today, we know that the filmmaker has been hard at work on completing post-production for the action-horror film. “Finishing touches in the DI on WEREWOLVES this week,” Miller tweeted.

The rest of the cast includes:

Lou Diamond Phillips plays Dr. Aranda, the Head of the CDC, tasked with finding a cure for the werewolf pandemic.

And James Michael Cummings plays Cody, Lucy’s neighbor, hard-core veteran and wolf-killer.

The film hails from The Solution Entertainment and is helmed by Steven C. Miller, director of Dimension Extreme’s The Aggression Scale, Bloody Disgusting’s Under the Bed, Silent Night, the remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night, and Margaux. He’s gone on to direct several action films including Escape Plan 2 and Marauders. It is produced by Myles Nestel (Blacklight), Craig Chapman (Honest Thief) and Sevier Crespo (Mack & Moxy).

“I think I’m going to write the next one, and if the audience wants it, we’ll do it,” DeMonaco told Daily Dead back in 2021. “Again, I think I came up with a new way to flip the whole thing upside down, and it’ll be five years after [The Forever Purge], but it takes America in a whole new direction and I think it would be a very interesting place to explore.”

DeMonaco explains to Variety in a new update this week that he finished the script “about eight months ago.” He tells the site, “It’s not completely different than previous movies, but it’s a new America that we’re entering into. In The Forever Purge, America kind of collapsed, and it’s really kind of mapped itself according to different ideologies. The states are based on sexuality, religion and ideology. So we’ve broken apart and the state of discord is at its worst.”

“We enter The Purge in that world,” DeMonaco adds, echoing his comments from 2021.

A former Los Angeles Police Department sergeant, Leo Barnes set out on Purge Night in The Purge: Anarchy to seek revenge for the drunk driving death of his son, though he ultimately spared the life of the man responsible. In The Purge: Election Year, Barnes is the head of security for senator Charlie Roan, eventually becoming the new Director of the Secret Service.

The sixth Purge movie would presumably find Leo Barnes once again fighting for his life in a very different America, with The Forever Purge turning it into an apocalyptic landscape.

In Merciless, when his wife is possessed by a malevolent spirit, the government’s top interrogator seeks vengeance on those who were closest to the entity in its previous life in order to drive it out of her body only to discover that everything is not what it appears to be.

Renee Tab, Pierre Morel and Tuffin will produce alongside Andy Schefter for Sentient Pictures International, which is shopping the film in Cannes. Tuffin developed the story with The Cooler writer Frank Hannah, who wrote the script.

Frank Grillo, who appeared in The Purge: Anarchy, The Purge: Election Year, and Beyond Skyline, is also starring in the Steven C. Miller-directed werewolf horror film Year 2, the Charles Manson-inspired Man’s Son, and also Session 9 director Brad Anderson’s The Dagon.

Principal photography is set to commence on location in Alabama in August 2022.

The “gripping psychological thriller” is currently in pre-production with Neal Edelstein (Mullholland Drive, The Ring, Night’s End) and Mike Macari (Alone) both producing. It was penned by Peter Mattei (“Outsiders”).

Frank Grillo, who appeared in The Purge: Anarchy, The Purge: Election Year, and Beyond Skyline, is also starring in the Steven C. Miller-directed werewolf horror film Year 2, and the Charles Manson-inspired Man’s Son.

Brad Anderson also directed Blood, which is currently for sale at the Cannes market, as well as The Machinist, Vanishing on 7th Street, The Fractured, and many others.

Independent Entertainment are repping the film, which will launch sales in Cannes this month. Independent are co-repping North American rights with CAA.

“The Dagon is one of those rare scripts that delivers a story and characters you completely invest in, only to totally pull the rug from under you,” said Marc Hofstatter, head of acquisitions for Independent Entertainment said.

Cameras are scheduled to roll in March in Yucca Valley, California.

Described as “The Purge with werewolves”, Year 2 is the wild and crazy story about the return of a supermoon which, on its last appearance just a year earlier, turned anybody touched by moonlight into a werewolf!

The synopsis notes that it led to nearly one billion deaths.

The film hails from The Solution Entertainment and is helmed by Steven C. Miller, director of Dimension Extreme’s The Aggression Scale, Bloody Disgusting’s Under the Bed, and Silent Night, the remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night. He’s gone on to direct several actioneers including Escape Plan 2 and Marauders.

Frank Grillo starred in The Purge: Anarchy, The Purge: Election Year, Beyond Skyline, and many, many more.

Year 2 is in pre-production, expect more casting soon.

“I think I’m going to write the next one, and if the audience wants it, we’ll do it,” DeMonaco told Daily Dead earlier this summer. “Again, I think I came up with a new way to flip the whole thing upside down, and it’ll be five years after this film, but it takes America in a whole new direction and I think it would be a very interesting place to explore.”

He teased, “It also brings back a character from the previous films, which is fun.”

That returning character, it seems, will be Frank Grillo‘s Leo Barnes, who first appeared in The Purge: Anarchy and returned in The Purge: Election Year. Speaking with The Playlist Podcast this week – an interview that was transcribed by Games Radar – Grillo suggests he’ll indeed be back for the sixth installment in the franchise, which may truly be the final Purge movie.

“We committed to doing that – Purge 6 with [James DeMonaco] directing,” Grillo tells Playlist. “It’s based on the Leo Barnes character. I’m excited. He’s going to send me the script. He just finished it. So, yeah, I’m really psyched about that. I love doing the Purge movies.”

A former Los Angeles Police Department sergeant, Leo Barnes set out on Purge Night in The Purge: Anarchy to seek revenge for the drunk driving death of his son, though he ultimately spared the life of the man responsible. In The Purge: Election Year, Barnes is the head of security for senator Charlie Roan, eventually becoming the new Director of the Secret Service.

The sixth Purge movie would presumably find Leo Barnes once again fighting for his life in a very different America, with The Forever Purge turning it into an apocalyptic landscape.

Costas Mandylor from the Saw franchise also stars in this one.

“You meet Frank’s character having just rotated back from a really, really, brutal special forces operation,” Carnahan explained. “He’s got soft tissue damage in his hands, and his rotator cuff is blown out, and they take fluid off his knees, and the doctors basically tell him, ‘Listen you’re at the razor’s edge of PTSD and you need three months of just nothing, some R&R, because you’re jacked up.’ And in that space he gets the message that his brother, who he thought had been dead for four years, is actually alive and working for a very bad guy in Caracas, and in 18 hours they’re gonna kill his brother. These forces are gonna descend and murder the bad guy and murder the brother, so do you wanna go and get your brother, who you thought is dead? Do you want that opportunity? So that’s where we start.”

He continued, “I want the entire movie to feel like the knife fight between Adam Goldberg and the German in Saving Private Ryan. Everything.“

“In every great action film there’s always an emotional quotient that you’re dealing with. You have to have a sense of stakes.”

Dean Devlin, who wrote Independence Day, is channeling his inner Emmerich with Geostorm, a disaster film that looks like all the best parts of “Sim City” merged with an actual story.

“As a man (Gerard Butler) heads into space to prevent climate-controlling satellites from creating a storm of epic proportions, his brother discovers a plot to assassinate the president (Andy Garcia).”

The film stars Gerard Butler (Olympus Has Fallen, 300), Jim Sturgess (Cloud Atlas), Abbie Cornish (Limitless), Alexandra Maria Lara (Rush), Daniel Wu (The Man with the Iron Fists, Warcraft: The Beginning), with Oscar nominees Ed Harris (The Hours,Apollo 13) and Andy Garcia.

Here’s the official synopsis:

“After an unprecedented series of natural disasters threatened the planet, the world’s leaders came together to create an intricate network of satellites to control the global climate and keep everyone safe. But now, something has gone wrong—the system built to protect the Earth is attacking it, and it’s a race against the clock to uncover the real threat before a worldwide geostorm wipes out everything…and everyone along with it.”

Butler stars as Jake, a scientist who, along with his brother, Max, played by Sturgess, is tasked with solving the satellite program’s malfunction. Demonic, directed by Will Canon and penned by Max La Bella, was already released internationally way back in 2015. It stars both The Purge‘s Frank Grillo alongside Maria Bello.

Filmed way back in 2013, “The film centers on the aftermath of a horrific massacre where five college students were brutally murdered inside an abandoned home. Detective Mark Lewis (Frank Grillo) and psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Klein (Maria Bello) question one of the few survivors who explains they were amateur ghost-hunters, seeking out paranormal phenomenon at the abandoned house, which was believed to be haunted. But what started out as a harmless activity turned into something truly terrifying.“

Luiz reviewed the film a few years back, calling it “muddled and clumsy.”

Demonic was completed before the release of James Wan’s The Conjuring, which means that we’ve seen several Conjuring spinoffs and sequels in the amount of time it took for them to finally release this little fella.
