Not only can you visit the camp of your own accord, but thanks to a new initiative from New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism (NJTT), in partnership with the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission, you can win a trip to stay at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco. New Jersey Film Trails has been launched, which highlights opportunities to visit real-life filming locations of a variety of movies and TV shows shot in the Garden State.

In honor of Halloween, and the state’s significant footprint in horror, the below festivities have officially kicked off:

Step into the Scene: Four Weeks of October Frights in New Jersey with Johnny Mingione

• With Halloween fast approaching, Audacy, a leading audio content and entertainment company, and digital creator and filmmaker Johnny Mingione, who is morning host on NEW 102.7 (WNEW-FM) in New York, will kick off the Film Trails’ seasonal programming with the Spooky Season Trail and an October-long multiplatform campaign.
• Mingione’s journey will unfold in four chapters throughout October, taking audiences across New Jersey to experience some of the Garden State’s most recognizable horror filming locations through weekly video chapters, radio features, and social media content. The series will build excitement for a sweepstakes giving listeners and viewers the chance to win a bucket-list “Crystal Lake” experience.

Enter to Win the Ultimate “Friday the 13th” Prize Experience

• Horror enthusiasts will be able to enter a special sweepstakes, created by Audacy, starting on October 5. One lucky fan will win a grand prize package including an overnight stay in New Jersey and an experience through Crystal Lake Tours at Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco, the private filming location of the original 1980 classic horror film, Friday the 13th.

Attendees at next weekend’s New York Comic Con are in for a unique treat, as they can step inside an all-new activation on the show floor honoring Crystal Lake. Peacock describes the experience, “Fans will be transported back to the 1970s at the seemingly idyllic Camp Crystal Lake — but will they survive their camp counsellor orientation? The free interactive experience for all New York Comic Con attendees will deliver in-world thrills, Camp Crystal Lake photo moments and branded giveaways.”

A prequel to the Friday the 13th franchise, Crystal Lake follows single mother Pam Voorhees who has been unable to shake her grief after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake almost a year before. When two strangers arrive at Pam’s door digging into her past, a disturbing chain of events is set into motion, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake wondering: just who is Pam Voorhees?

Crystal Lake stars Linda Cardellini, William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom.

Even though we’ve gotten looks at the new series through teasers, we still have a feeling it will be an experience that no one could have anticipated. We’re more than happy to settle for literally any new story set in the Friday the 13th franchise, and we can also hope that this is merely the beginning of a full-blown revival of the proper franchise.

Crystal Lake premieres on Peacock on October 15.

In fact, just this month alone, Rothe had three movies playing at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, courtesy of River, Beware Boiúna, and Pathetic Fallacy. Her future in the genre doesn’t seem to be slowing, as she even has some ideas on what she’d like to tackle in the future.

During a Reddit AMA, Rothe was asked which iconic slasher franchise she’d like to join, and she enthusiastically confirmed, “Friday the 13th!” Unfortunately, there aren’t currently any plans for a new entry in the franchise, though we’ll be getting the prequel TV series Crystal Lake on Peacock shortly. Perhaps if the show is a hit, there can be more momentum behind the powers that be to develop a new Friday the 13th movie.

Elsewhere in the conversation, she was asked about other filmmakers she’d like to work with, as she responded, “I would kill to work with Sam [Raimi]. [Zach] Cregger. Curry Barker, Robert Eggers, Chris Landon a million times more. The list goes on.” Reflecting on her own connection to the genre, she detailed, “First horror movie that scared the absolute sh-t out of me was The Ring. That put me off them for a while because it literally scared me lol. But first that showed me how deep and complex and badass horror could be? Probably The Thing.”

Rothe’s River had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and impressed audiences, as it currently sits at 92% positive on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Blumhouse Atomic Monster quickly swooped in to acquire the title, though it doesn’t yet have an official release date. While it might be months before the general public gets to enjoy the experience, Rothe already teased some conversations that River could get a follow-up.

“[Writer/director] Josh [Giuliano] is an absolute genius, and I loved working with him. It is early, but I know he has some ideas… All I’ll say is that I would return in a heartbeat,” Rothe noted. “Love him. Love [costar] Jane [Levy]. Love the River. BUT ALSO! The best way to guarantee a sequel to River (or any movie you love) is to go see it in theaters. Studios pay attention to those numbers. So show your love and spread the word!”

Beware Boiúna is set to be released on October 2, but her other new movies don’t yet have release dates.

Hollywood loves to remake, yet so do other filmmaking industries around the world. These other places aren’t just remaking domestic movies, either. As this list demonstrates, localizing imported ideas is fairly common.

The following ten movies are merely a sample of what’s out there when looking for international horror remakes you might not know about.

Seytan (1974)

Seytan, Metin Erksan‘s unofficial remake of 1973’s The Exorcist, has to be seen to be believed. This Turkish version is so brazen with its copying that it never has a chance to form its own personality. Plus, the effects are shoddy, the acting is dubious, and generally speaking, the movie is just very not good. Even so, all of that leads to a lot of incidental amusement.

A Monstrous Corpse (1981)

Of all the zombie movies that Korean filmmaker Kang Beom-gu could’ve semi-remade at the time, he picked something unexpected. No, instead of reimagining, say, Dawn of the Dead, A Monstrous Corpse is based on Jorge Grau‘s The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue (a.k.a. Let Sleeping Corpses Lie). Here, a radio transmitter’s ultrasonic wavelengths cause the dead to rise. A Monstrous Corpse is widely considered to be South Korea’s first zombie movie, but obviously it wasn’t the last. You’re in luck, by the way; this K-horror classic is available through the Korean Film Archive.

Srigala (1981)

The Indonesian Srigala is a quasi-remake of 1980’s Friday the 13th. It’s really more accurate to say Sisworo Gautama Putra‘s movie remakes certain scenes, as opposed to the whole movie. Here, some treasure hunters find more than just buried fortune upon reaching their destination; there’s a murderer hunting them down, one by one. By the end, the references to Friday the 13th become obvious.

Mahakaal (1994)

There are at least two Indian riffs on 1984’s A Nightmare on Elm Street, but as of this writing, Shyam and Tulsi Ramsay‘s Mahakaal appears to be the only one to have gotten an official release outside of its homeland. The other, Khooni Murda (1989), has fallen through the cracks. Looking at reviews, that seems understandable. As for Mahakaal, this other Bollywood interpretation includes a character who does a hilariously bad impersonation of Michael Jackson. Par for the course, there’s a lot of singing and dancing in between the horror content.

Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell (1995)

Sam Raimi‘s The Evil Dead inspired a number of filmmakers, to say the least. A few of them, however, saw this as more than an opportunity to do something equally gonzo; they straight up used that iconic horror movie as a blueprint. In the case of Shinichi Fukazawa‘s Japanese cult flick Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell, it “apes so much from Evil Dead that it’s virtually an unauthorized remake”. Story beats and Ash’s signature “groovy” are all included here. What was once so hard to find is now easily available with just the tap of a finger. So, do you dare to discover what’s been rightfully dubbed “The Japanese Evil Dead”?

Kucch to Hai (2003)

While Anurag Basu and Anil V. Kumar‘s Kucch to Hai is said to be a remake of 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, it also borrows from that movie’s sequel, as well as 1998’s Urban Legend. Keep in mind, no one in charge will confirm any of that. Horror fans, however, can spot an homage, official or otherwise. In this movie, it takes quite a bit of time, plus singing and dancing, before we reach the event that puts a target on the characters’ backs. Just be thankful there’s any attempt at suspense here; sometimes these Bollywood remakes don’t even bother doing that.

Yella (2007)

Prior to Christian Petzold‘s German remake of Carnival of Souls, there was a ’90s version that, in the past, has been torn to shreds by critics and audiences. Although Wes Craven is listed as a producer there, and was also nearly the director, he has little to do with the movie. As for Yella, it’s a more grounded retelling of Souls that’s hard to categorize; it’s more supernaturally tinted than straight up horror. Yet like the original, the story leaves room for interpretation.

Watching (2019)

More and more people have come around to P2, the nasty holiday horror movie that Roger Ebert called “well made” in his review. Nevertheless, P2 wasn’t a huge success, so learning there’s a Korean remake is a small surprise. The setup between Watching and its predecessor is the same; a workaholic is held captive and tortured by a parking garage attendant. Kim Sung-Gi‘s movie, though, has a plot twist that makes it all worthwhile.

Sharktopus (2023)

Remaking bad movies should be more common practice. In the case of Sharktopus, the Chinese version is actually something of an improvement. It’s only fitting that Dongsheng Hu and Shixing Xu‘s movie, one of many Chinese creature-features from the last decade, redoes a SYFY Original. These CGI-ridden spectacles are essentially the same thing, only now more absurd and brainless, if you can believe it.

Handsome Guys (2024)

One of the most random entries here has to be Nam Dong-hyup‘s Handsome Guys, the Korean Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. Indeed, that beloved horror comedy is the basis for this movie, and for at least half of the time, it’s sort of faithful to the original. The style of comedy is also a bit different, but if you’ve watched enough Korean media, you shouldn’t be too caught off guard. Additionally, there is a more pronounced supernatural element in the last act.

AMC has not only announced that Tales from the Crypt‘s The Crypt Keeper would serve as host of this year’s event, but also revealed its full schedule of programming.

The Crypt Keeper, the underground icon from the beloved ’90s cult-classic Tales From the Crypt voiced by John Kassir, will be the official host of this year’s FearFest to mark the 30th anniversary of the epic horror celebration. With presenting sponsor BACARDÍ Rum returning for a second year, the long-running annual horror and genre programming event, featuring over 650 hours of iconic horror films, franchises, new series, specials and more, kicks off Thursday, October 1 on AMC and AMC+.

Famed special effects master, AMC’s longtime creative partner and The Walking Dead director, Greg Nicotero (Creepshow, Guts & Glory) re-created the legendary puppet for a ghoulish refresh, leveraging his expertise in practical effects and creature design to update the Crypt Keeper’s signature look, movement, and personality for today’s audiences. In collaboration with AMC Global Media’s Content Room, the company’s in-house branded entertainment studio, Nicotero directed the Crypt Keeper segments for FearFest with John Kassir providing the signature cackle and wit that cemented the Crypt Keeper’s legacy.

Inspired by Ice Nine Kills’ The Silver Scream and The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood albums, the series pairs the band’s love of horror with five films that have helped define the genre. Each screening will also feature a custom introduction from Ice Nine Kills frontman Spencer Charnas before the film, followed by the band’s corresponding music video inspired by the feature.

“It’s a bloody honor to present this selection of modern horror classics with the mighty AMC Theatres and our friends at Bloody Disgusting. Metal music and marquee movie mayhem. What more could we ask for this October?” says Charnas.

“Scares should be shared. Simple as that,” says Michael Roffman, Business Development of Bloody Disgusting. “There are no stronger crossroads for Horror fans than the theater experience. “Welcome to Horrorwood” takes over Friday and Tuesday nights at AMC throughout October, with all screenings beginning at 8 p.m. local time. For Halloween weekend, THE CROW will be featured as the Friday night title on October 30, and returns for a special Halloween night screening on Saturday, October 31.

And unbelievably, some of us go willingly into that hellscape for the purpose of hiking, camping, necromancing, and fornicating beneath the stars. Horror filmmakers understand this to be true, and the result is an entire subgenre of forest-set terrors ranging from slashers to creature features and beyond.

Films featuring camping often include characters bedding down for the night in the comfort of a cotton chrysalis: a sleeping bag. But while its warmth may be real, its safety is mere illusion, as it instead becomes a death trap with only one way in or out. A handful of movies recognize that by killing off characters with the misfortune of being “safe” in the bag when hell comes calling.

Below is a ranking of nine sleeping bag kills – there are probably some movies that I’ve missed, but I refuse to apologize – and the order comes down to a few simple factors. I’m weighing the filmmaking itself alongside the impact it has on viewers, but the bottom line comes down to just how memorable the scene has proven itself to be over time.

9. Ted Bunny (2026)

Ted Bundy’s reign of terror ended in 1975 when he was arrested, convicted, and eventually executed for his serial crimes. What this film presupposes, though, is that the terror is still ongoing. Bundy, of course, was a very real killer whose story has already reached the screen in numerous ways before, but here it’s in the form of an illegitimate son who dresses up as a rabbit while killing people. It’s not a comedy!

The newest sleeping bag kill on this list is also the simplest (and least effective, dramatically). A couple camping in the woods is interrupted by some noises, and soon the man’s throat is slit beneath the moonlight. The woman tucks herself into a sleeping bag, but Ted Jr. drags her to the campfire, drops her atop it, and watches her writhe as she burns. It’s open by her head, but she never tries to crawl out or even roll off the flames – the partly CG flames – but hey, it’s a sleeping bag kill!

8. Rats: Night of Terror (1984)

While the bulk of this list showcases human (or inhuman) killers disrespecting the sanctity of the sleeping bag, these next two entries show that animals can be just as rude. The first of the two occurs in 225 A.B. – “after the bomb” – as descendants of humans who hid underground during a nuclear exchange head to the surface to see what’s what. All kinds of troubles and dangers surround them, but the biggest threat might just be an army of voraciously hungry rats.

The super cool gang settles into an abandoned town for the night and notices that the corpses strewn about seem to have been serving as buffets. No worries. Lilith recovers from canoodling with her man, Lucifer, by dozing off in a sleeping bag, but a bold rat gnaws its way through the cloth – and then keeps right on going. The horrors happen unseen inside the bag, but it’s implied that the rodent, er, finds a way inside Lilith while she struggles to escape. It dines well, and when Lilith’s body is found later, her friends watch as the engorged rat crawls out of her mouth. This is a pretty vicious kill, even as it leaves much to the imagination.

7. The Monkey (2025)

Osgood Perkins’ adaptation of Stephen King’s short story is something of a fun mixed bag, but one thing he gets absolutely right is the choice to expand the tale and make it his own. The short story is incredibly simple, so the film expands on its basic lore – a toy monkey plays its drum (cymbals in the actual story) when wound up, but someone nearby is immediately killed – to include feuding brothers, Death himself, and a much, much higher body count.

Hal’s childhood saw him frequently bullied by his twin brother, Bill, and that relationship was complicated by the presence of the toy monkey. Their youth was filled with unexpected death and carnage, and after losing their mom to the monkey’s whims, the pair are sent to live with their Uncle Chip. He’s no safer, of course, and Hal shares in a flashback montage that Chip was trampled in his sleeping bag by 67 horses. Perkins gives us a quick, goofy, and gory glance at the trample and the aftermath as the man’s remains are poured out looking “like someone had drop-kicked a cherry pie.” It’s gross, absurd, and a fun little entry on the list.

6. Don’t Go in the Woods (1981)

James Bryan’s early ’80s slasher doesn’t have the best reputation, and while Vinegar Syndrome’s beautifully restored Blu-ray makes it easier to watch, the film itself is still a messy romp in the woods. It deserves credit, though, for beating the Friday the 13th films – a franchise built almost entirely on a summer camp premise – to the punch when it comes to a sleeping bag kill. Insane that it took the Friday the 13th films seven more years to deliver one of their own.

Two campers – one of the film’s issues (and hallmarks, if we’re being honest) is that its ensemble is a big ol’ mess of unrelated people and storylines – have settled into their sleeping bags for the night when a big, burly killer comes calling. He ties the guy into his bag, tosses him aside, and then hangs the woman’s sleeping bag over a tree branch. From there, it’s just a series of brutal stabbings and slashings as he alternates between the two. Her cries are audible as blood permeates the bag, and we watch as he’s stabbed to death inside his own fabric coffin. The level of filmmaking and lack of a desire to make it entertaining makes it brutally effective instead.

5. Friday the 13th (2009)

The Friday the 13th reboot is easily among the franchise’s three or four best entries. Derek Mears is the best Jason, too. Okay, now that that’s out of the way, let’s explore this brutally mean kill. The franchise saw two earlier sleeping bag kills – both land in spots below – that fit the tone of their respective movies. One is fun in its simplicity, and the other is an homage that goes a few steps beyond, but it’s not the laughs they’re aiming for here.

Mears and director Marcus Nispel are after a meaner, more horrifying experience, and it starts with a faster, more feral Jason. This is prior to his acquiring a hockey mask, too, leaving his head wrapped up in a more frightening, less iconic fashion. Amanda’s tent is sliced open, and she’s grabbed in her sleeping bag by a monstrous man. Her boyfriend returns to camp just in time to see the bag suspended over the campfire, catching on fire, and burning Amanda alive. It’s doubly brutal as her death is clearly painful and prolonged, and he’s forced to watch (for a few seconds, at least).

4. Jason X (2001)

The tone of various entries in the original franchise can sometimes seem debatable, as some play it seriously despite the absurdity of what they’re presenting. Other entries, though, fully understand and embrace the idea of a goofy good time. Jason going to space is an obvious opportunity for the latter, and it fully delivers on the promise of slasher hijinks amid cheap sci-fi sets and a wholly nonsensical premise. Jason’s corpse is being studied for its regenerative properties; he’s accidentally cryogenically frozen, Earth goes to shit hundreds of years later so humans begin anew on Earth II, some hot twentysomethings visit old Earth on a field trip and find Jason’s frozen body… okay, let’s just get to the damn sleeping bag kill.

Jason’s rampaging through the spaceship, so the survivors distract him with a simulation straight out of Star Trek’s holodeck. He enters “Crystal Lake” and finds two young women with an allergy to clothes who try to woo him from the comfort of their sleeping bags. We cut away for some character/story piece, and when we return, we see Jason using one of the women in her bag to bludgeon the other woman in her own bag – and when he’s done, he slams the first one against a nearby tree. It’s a fun, exaggerated homage to the franchise’s very first sleeping bag kill.

3. Night of the Demon (1980)

You’d think that Bigfoot and sleeping bag kills would go together like giallos and J&B whisky, but the evidence just doesn’t support that. Campers are sleeping out in the woods; Bigfoot’s out killing people in the woods – should be a no-brainer! My guess is that filmmakers creating Bigfoot films over the past 40-plus years probably saw this 1980 “classic,” realized they’d never be able to top its sleeping bag murder, and just decided to never even try.

Jim West’s sasquatch gem is a funny, chatty, grimy, terribly scored affair that delivers several unforgettable sequences. My own personal favorite involves two Girl Scouts who Bigfoot uses as murderous marionettes to stab each other to death. It’s glorious nonsense. The sleeping bag kill is its own kind of fun, though, as a camper awakes to see the big guy standing over him. Bigfoot picks up the sleeping bag, twirls him around like a sack of onions, and tosses him screaming through the air until he’s impaled on a big branch. This is just gold.

2. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988)

This seventh entry in the long-running franchise seems to be one that fans either love or hate with no real middle ground. I’m in the former camp, as I think it’s a top three sequel – seriously, giving Jason a supernaturally endowed combatant is a fun idea! – despite its offensively limited bloodletting as a concession to the MPAA. It’s got fun characters you’re excited to see bite it, some physical stunt action, the aforementioned Jason versus Carrie face-off, and the reason we’re talking about it today – Friday the 13th’s very first sleeping bag kill.

Dan and Judy are out camping, and Jason is on the prowl. He punches a hole through Dan’s chest and snaps his neck for good measure before slicing his way into the tent and grabbing a sleeping bag-enshrouded Judy. Jason drags her away in the bag and brutally slams her against a tree, killing her instantly. That’s the theatrical cut, and that single slam into the tree is undeniably effective, but my heart belongs to the uncut version the MPAA wouldn’t allow. Jason slams the bag against the tree six times, with each hit making it look like a sack of increasingly smooshed and leaky tomatoes, and it is just wonderfully, excessively mean.

1. Prophecy (1979)

Regular readers know that this entire list came about because of a recent Commentary Commentary feature I did on 1979’s Prophecy. It’s a fun, deadly serious slice of eco-horror delivering some sincere themes on the need to be better stewards of the Earth. There are also several kills as a monstrously mutated bear savages its way through human prey, and while most of them are played for scares, terror, and the horror of it all, one kill stands out as being hugely entertaining and unintentionally fun.

A family settles in for the night in their sleeping bags around the warm glow of their campfire, but their peaceful dreams are interrupted by the arrival of a large, angry, mutated bear. Screams echo between the trees as panic sets in, and the young boy attempts to escape by hopping away while still fully enclosed in his sleeping bag. Mama bear ain’t having it, though, and slaps the kid with one mighty swing that sends him flying through the air. The child slams against a boulder and bursts into a cloud of feathers and stuffing that slowly settles to the ground atop his unmoving body. As a big connoisseur of “kid kills” in horror, this is a rarity that shocks, thrills, and entertains in equal measure.

While these are currently nothing more than teases and clues about what the show will explore, the reaction from fans to such theories have caused showrunner Brad Caleb Kane to weigh in on the matter.

Taking to Instagram, Kane posted a photo of Dr. Freeze from Batman and Robin, captioning the post, “It’s not the CIA. He’s not a gov’t super soldier or an Eleven. He’s probably just a Chud. Or at worst a Trog. In any case, all will be known Oct. 15. Y’know, they called Copernicus a heretic at first, too. And look how that turned out! Well, bad for him, I guess. Nevermind. Enjoy!!!”

What’s worth noting, though, is that Kane jokingly shoots down the idea that Jason is an “Eleven,” referencing Millie Bobby Brown’s Stranger Things role, as well as mentioning various horror creatures. While we doubt Jason will be revealed to actually be connected to any of the beloved franchises Kane mentioned, the filmmaker could intentionally be misdirecting theorists from buying too much into more ambitious speculation.

Even though Kane’s post might have been an attempt to settle the speculation about Jason and Pamela Voorhees, it’s possible that we’re just left with more questions. On the one hand, the entire premise of Crystal Lake and how it explores Pamela’s (Linda Cardellini) backstory before we see her murderous side in the original Friday the 13th makes us wonder why this is a story worth telling. Given that we haven’t gotten a new movie in the series since the 2009 reboot, we’re happy to take any new stories we can get, though an origin story for Pamela didn’t seem like the most obvious angle to pursue.

On the other hand, if Kane and his creative team have found a way to at least imply that Jason was more than your average boy, it could ultimately reveal how he was able to survive drownings, stabbings, and all of the other grievous injuries he suffered. Admittedly, not a lot of people have shown much interest in getting to the truth behind Jason, and the less we know about him, the better.

Still, Brad Caleb Kane’s remarks have us all the more curious about Crystal Lake and what’s in store for us when the series premieres on Peacock on October 15.

With that in mind, it makes sense that the full trailer for Peacock’s upcoming Crystal Lake TV show is blowing up online, as fans have a lot to say about the latest preview and its unexpected teasing of both a bag-headed Jason Voorhees and an implied sci-fi explanation for his “condition.”

From what we can gather from brief snippets of footage (as well as dialogue hinting that there’s more to this family than meets the eye), it’s implied that Pamela Voorhees and her ill-fated offspring have some kind of history with a secretive research facility that looks a lot like it might be engaging in MK Ultra experiments.

For our less conspiracy-minded readers, MK Ultra was a real life government program that was initiated in the 1950s and engaged in controversial experimentation involving mind control, chemically-induced torture and -allegedly- serial killer studies. When the public first caught wind of this secretive program, the news ended up inspiring popular genre stories by writers like Stephen King and Robert Ludlum. These days, however, most folks know about MK Ultra because of its role in the creation of Stranger Things, with this connection actually driving some fans to accuse Crystal Lake of actively stealing from Netflix’s cash cow.

As is usually the case with retcons, adding sci-fi elements to the Friday the 13th franchise is a risky move that -understandably- has a lot of people up in arms, but I’d argue that these additions aren’t as much of a reach as you might initially think. Not only does the timeline match, but the MK Ultra serial killer angle was part of the cultural zeitgeist that originated the series in the first place. Plus, having Jason Voorhees be the result of government experimentation is no less ridiculous than reframing him as a Deadite or a zombie fueled by lightning bolts.

At the end of the day, fans can still mix and match their favorite elements of the franchise mythology like we’ve been doing since the 1980s.

Of course, we’ll only really know how the story plays out when Crystal Lake finally releases on October 15, though I have a feeling that there’s a lot more going on with this show than the trailers would have you believe (especially with characters referencing how the lake never gives up her dead).

Empire Online reveals this week that legendary original Friday the 13th composer Harry Manfredini has contributed brand new original music to Peacock’s “Crystal Lake” series!

The opening title sequence for “Crystal Lake,” in fact, will pay tribute to the original classic.

“Crystal Lake” showrunner Brad Caleb Kane tells Empire, “The credit sequence can really help set the right atmosphere and vibe from the start. I remember watching a show that was the precursor to The X-Files, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, and it had this really grainy, nerve-jangling vibe to it that’s just steeped in that 1970s time and place. But I also wanted to give a nod to the original Friday the 13th movie; the words ‘Crystal Lake’ pop out of the screen, shatter the glass, and the credits use the same font as the movie.”

Empire notes, “They also got Harry Manfredini – who scored the original film – to create new original music for the title sequence.”

Empire Online reveals in a new preview piece this week that A24 and Peacock’s prequel “Crystal Lake” takes place eight years before the events of the original Friday the 13th movie.

Jason drowns in the Summer of 1971, while the bulk of the series takes place in 1972.

Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane tells the outlet, “Pam is a cook at Camp Crystal Lake, Jason is an eleven-year-old camper participating in all activities despite his physical limitations, and his mom is absolutely intent on making sure he has a normal summer outdoors with other kids… but with ultimately tragic consequences.”

“Things take some twists and turns on the way to Pam’s total psychotic break and subsequent bloody rampage,” Caleb Kane previews.

The official trailer begins in Summer 1971, with a young Jason Voorhees drowning in Crystal Lake. From there, the series jumps forward in time to shine the spotlight on Pamela Voorhees and her rage over the death of her young son… though as we know, he’s not quite dead. Pamela believes Jason is still out there somewhere, and the trailer suggests that the series will reveal how Jason is able to seemingly come back from the dead and become the character we all know.

“What do you think the good people of Crystal Lake would say if they knew what you and Jason really were?” a character says to Mrs. Voorhees in the trailer. It’s a line that’s sure to grab the attention of longtime Friday the 13th fans, as none of the films ever quite explained how Jason died as a child and was soon thereafter a fully grown madman prowling the woods of Crystal Lake.

While the rare behind-the-scenes production photos offer a cool glimpse of the zombified slasher icon, the new images provide an even bigger rarity: a look at the original design concept for Mr. Shepard (John Otrin), the dead dad who temporarily resurrects to help final girl Tina Sheppard (Lar Park Lincoln) in her confrontation with Jason.

In the sequel, Tina’s telekinetic powers accidentally revives Jason from his watery grave, triggering a new wave of murders.

It wasn’t just the superpowered new heroine that made this sequel so polarizing, though, but how bloodless it was. As Zachary Paul noted in his retrospective, “the MPAA was already notorious for its hatred of the Friday the 13th franchise, so despite it being the exact kind of film they tended to be more lenient on, they essentially punished The New Blood for simply being a part of the series.“

That resulted in a lot of the film’s gory kills getting culled down to a mostly bloodless affair.

While some bits of excised footage from The New Blood have surfaced over the years, we’ve to date never seen all of the footage that was trimmed out of the movie in order to get it the “R” rating necessary for theatrical release back in the late 1980s. 

These new images don’t restore the gore, but it is a cool look at what might’ve been.

We’re sad to learn that Victor Miller has passed away this week at 86.

“Yesterday my father, Victor Miller, went to his final reward,” son Ian Miller writes on Instagram. “He was almost always the smartest, funniest person in whatever room he was in. He inspired in me, and many others, a love of photography, music, and storytelling.”

Miller’s son adds, “He had a helluva run and will be missed dearly.”

Prior to writing the original Friday the 13th, Victor Miller had written the film Manny’s Orphans for director Sean Cunningham, who of course directed Friday the 13th just two years later.

Victor Miller’s writing credits also include the 1982 film A Stranger Is Watching, along with TV shows “One Life to Live,” “Guiding Light,” “General Hospital,” and “Married With Children.”

Victor Miller later returned to the horror genre to write the film Rock, Paper, Scissors in 2017, which was directed by fellow horror legend Tom Holland (Child’s Play, Fright Night).

But it’s of course Friday the 13th that will forever be the enduring legacy of Victor Miller in the world of entertainment, and what a legacy that is. The 1980 horror classic changed the game for the horror genre and launched a legendary saga that still continues to this day, with Victor Miller on board as an executive producer for the upcoming prequel series “Crystal Lake.”

The A24 series, set to premiere on Peacock this October, will jump back in time to explore the events that paved the way for the story Miller and Cunningham told all those years ago.

Victor Miller is survived by his wife, two sons, and his grandson.

The outlet details, “Pabst Blue Ribbon is teaming up with Horror Inc. for a limited-edition Jason Voorhees collaboration that turns its 12-pack packaging into a wearable version of the slasher icon’s hockey mask. You can cut the mask out of the box or, apparently, throw the whole damn 12-pack over your head and be IG photo dump ready.”

“Along with the wearable packaging,” Food Beast continues, “fans can expect a collection of Jason-themed apparel, glassware, koozies, tap handles, tackers, and bobbleheads.”

The campaign rolls out in stores in September and will run through November 13, with Food Beast noting that some stores will get standees, and some bars will even get Jason tap handles.

Brad Caleb Kane previewed earlier this week, “I think the biggest conceptual issue was people know what to expect from a Friday the 13th, or at least they know what a Friday the 13th movie should be. Teens go out to a place, they are having sex and doing drugs, and then they are hunted by Mrs. Voorhees or Jason in the subsequent films. But, thankfully, we weren’t making a Friday the 13th movie. They are going to make another Friday the 13th movie, which I’m sure will be Friday the 13th to the max; but this was called Crystal Lake, and we were doing a story about the town and a prequel about Jason’s mom, and it was really fresh snow.”

“We could build it however we wanted,” the showrunner continued. “And feeling ownership for the franchise as a long‑time fan and a lover of it, truly die‑hard lover, I kind of knew what I wanted to see as a grown‑up Friday the 13th fan, as somebody who these movies opened doors for me and opened my eyes and I was thrilled watching them with thousand‑seaters full of people yelling at the screen. But I also grew up a little bit and became interested in other films and other themes in films, and I wanted to bring all of that cinema love to my love for Friday the 13th.”

Does that mean “Crystal Lake” isn’t really a slasher series in the way that the Friday the 13th movies are slasher movies? And does Pamela Voorhees do any killing in those earlier years?

According to showrunner Brad Caleb Kane, Pam indeed goes “full Friday the 13th” in the series.

Brad Caleb Kane explains during a panel this week, “You watch the first four episodes, and you go ‘Okay. They are telling a story, and there’s a little bit of paranoid conspiracy thriller here, and it’s a psychological devolution or evolution, however you want to put it; but where’s Friday the 13th‘?” Pam goes full Friday the 13th in this season, and you will see it.”

He continues, “There are a series of kills that are everything the movies do, and, hopefully, it will satisfy the real hunt hack‑and‑slash fans, too; we build to it, but it’s coming.”

That being said, expect something far different than the traditional Friday the 13th movie.

The Hollywood Reporter lets us know that Warner Bros. Discovery has picked up “Crystal Lake” for HBO Max in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, excluding the U.K. and Ireland.

“The series is set to debut on HBO Max across the region later this year,” THR notes.

Here in the United States, “Crystal Lake” slashes into Peacock on October 15. We know that ALL EIGHT EPISODES of “Crystal Lake” will release at the same time on that date.

Each episode has a runtime of 60 minutes.

The addition of Jason marks another major horror franchise joining Hellbreak‘s expanding universe, which already includes several Universal Monsters properties such as Dracula and The Bride of Frankenstein, as well as A Quiet Place, Jaws and more.

“From the start, Hellbreak was built to bring together the icons that define the genre, and it simply wouldn’t feel complete without Jason,” said Doug Wadleigh, Spin Master’s President of Toys. “His addition to the first set marks a major milestone for the game and for fans who have been waiting to see these legends collide.”

Developed in collaboration with Ghost Galaxy,  Hellbreak is a horror trading card game where the gameplay revolves around the idea of a “Monster Sandbox,” an arena in which fan-favorite characters from horror history fight to the bitter end. While we’ve since received more information about the show -including how all eight episodes will be released at the same time on October 15– fans wasted no time in speculating about the direction they think showrunner Brad Caleb Kane intends to take the franchise next. After all, Kane’s team is free to adapt elements from the entire Friday the 13th franchise, so it seems that anything goes at this point. That being said, I doubt we’ll be seeing young Jason depicted as a fun-sized killer with an affinity for hockey masks, as I’m of the opinion that the show is likely reaching back to the original actress behind Pamela Voorhees herself in order to fill out the prequel’s story.

You see, after sifting through behind-the-scenes interviews and plenty of special features from my own Friday the 13th collection on physical media, I learned that the late, great Betsy Palmer had come up with an elaborate backstory for Ms. Voorhees that was never properly explored in the films. She may have only accepted the iconic role because she needed money for a new car, with Palmer notoriously referring to Victor Miller’s original script as a “piece of shit”, but that didn’t stop her from taking her work seriously – and eventually even warming up to the now-iconic film.

Trained in the Stanislavski Method, an infamous system where actors use the “art of experiencing” to more realistically portray their characters, Palmer decided to build off of Miller’s script and make her own notes in order to characterize Pamela as a more complex and arguably sympathetic figure, even if only a fraction of her contributions would actually make it onscreen.

The only real information she found in the script concerned her character’s prominent class ring, and from there Palmer extrapolated an entire backstory where Pamela had a high school boyfriend during the 1940s that got her pregnant and then skipped town. This led to Pamela being forced to raise her child all on her own during a deeply conservative period in American history – another reason why the character is so bothered by the camp counselors’ promiscuity.

It was Tom Savini who first revealed to Palmer that Jason was going to be depicted as being disabled (an idea that wasn’t in the original screenplay), with this crucial addition making the actress realize that Ms. Voorhees was already overburdened even before the death of her son. The tragedy only pushed her over the edge as she became a puritanical vigilante attempting to shut down Camp Crystal Lake at any cost.

For Palmer, this means that “Camp Blood” never had any curse, as the multiple fires and poisoned water incidents that kept the camp from reopening before the summer of 1979 were merely part of Ms. Voorhees’ years-long vendetta against the property’s owners. Palmer also insisted that the killer in the sequels isn’t the original Jason, as he definitively drowned at the bottom of Crystal Lake. According to her, having Pamela’s child return even as a killer revenant would undo her entire character arc, meaning that the masked murderer who takes over her legacy must be someone or something else entirely!

These ideas match up with most of what we’ve heard about Peacock and A24’s plans for the upcoming series, which is set to follow Linda Cardellini as Pamela after she gives up a career as a singer in order to take care of her disabled son, played by Callum Vinson. That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised if the writing team decided to borrow from the woman behind the machete in order to make the series more authentic to the source material.

Of course, there are rumors floating around that the show could also feature a teenage Jason in some capacity, so we’re still not sure about how exactly Kane and company plan to adapt their project to the franchise’s ever-changing mythology. That’s why I’d like to invite fellow readers to comment below with your own theories about where you think the prequel show is headed!

For now, I think it’s safe to say that Friday the 13th fans are more than ready to binge-watch Pamela’s bloody origin story when it finally drops this October. And who knows? Maybe the show’s success could finally lead to a new mainline film…

“Everybody in this world is living in a different genre in their mind,” Kane says, “until they collide with the genre that Pam is in.” Kane clarifies Crystal Lake is “100 percent” still a slasher. What’s more, the series is set in the ’70s.

In a chat with Variety this week, Jason Universe’s Robbie Barsamian teases that everything we’ve seen up to this point is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Jason’s return.

“We’ve been busy behind the scenes laying the foundation that everyone is finally starting to see come to life, but this is just the tip of the iceberg,” Barsamian teases.

“We have a thrilling lineup of new projects that we can’t wait to share more details on soon.”

Barsamian also notes during the chat with Variety, “We want to give fans fresh takes on what they love most about Jason and continue to expand his world in authentic ways that resonate with horror fans today.” One of those expansions will take the form of the upcoming Peacock and A24 series “Crystal Lake,” which stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees.

“The Crystal Lake TV series will take fans back in time to tell the story of how Pamela Voorhees came to be the mother of all slashers,” Barsamian tells Variety this week.

“Crystal Lake” premieres October 15 on Peacock.

Linda Cardellini stars as Pamela Voorhees in “Crystal Lake,” the mother of Jason Voorhees and the killer from the original Friday the 13th movie. The character finally takes center stage in the upcoming Peacock series, and Cardellini teases what to expect in a new chat with Deadline.

“She’s important to the series, but sort of unexplored,” Cardellini tells the outlet. “So I thought that would be really, really fun, to do something I’d never done.”

The actress goes on to explain that “Crystal Lake” showrunner Brad Caleb Kane has “made sort of this mixtape of all the things that he would love to see happen for [Pamela Voorhees].”

“It goes all over the place for her character and it’s really fun,” Cardellini adds.

“Crystal Lake” premieres October 15 on Peacock.

Jason’s default Outfit presents the unmistakable icon from Jason Universe, originally designed by horror legend Greg Nicotero: a 13-holed hockey mask, machete, and weather-beaten clothing worn through countless kills.

Additional outfits include Backwoods Terror, which trades Jason’s jacket for flannel and suspenders, and his machete for a heavy axe. Death Forsaken offers a more grotesque incarnation with decayed features, exposed bone, and a shovel in hand. Lastly, Jason’s Depths of Despair Outfit sees him emerging from the depths; a vision of terror covered head-to-toe in barnacles, coral, and seaweed.

In “Crystal Lake,” Mrs. Voorhees finally takes center stage. And star Linda Cardellini talks a little bit about that in a new chat with The Hollywood Reporter this week.

“With Crystal Lake, A24, Peacock and [creator] Brad Caleb Kane all came together and they just had this concept for making this story about Pam Voorhees,” Cardellini (who is playing Mrs. Voorhees in the show) explains. “And if you watch the original movie, it really operates like a whodunit. Spoiler: at the end, you find out that it was Pam Voorhees.”

Cardellini continues, “She’s only in the movie for the last little bit, but she leaves this impression on the entire franchise. There’s so many movies subsequent that you’d think Jason’s always been in that mask doing what he’s doing. But that wasn’t the case. It just seemed like something that I had never done.

“I haven’t seen that many female slashers like that. To dive into who she might have been, I thought, well, that’s something I’ve never done. When I’m looking for things to do next, I ask myself what’s something I haven’t done yet. And that was one of them.”

“There’s fertile backstory there,” the actress also notes, explaining that the original Friday the 13th left the door wide open to examine the backstory behind the Camp Crystal Lake carnage. And that’s exactly what we’re getting when “Crystal Lake” premieres October 15 on Peacock.

“There was never a question that our 10th Anniversary Chapter couldn’t just be big – it needed to be something really special,” says Behaviour Interactive Senior Creative Director, Dave Richard. “When we started to see a path to finally making this partnership a reality for our 10th, we knew then the perfect Jason moment had come. We’re just thrilled the stars aligned and we were able to work with the great folks at Jason Universe to deliver this for our players on such a major milestone for Dead by Daylight.”

As we already know from the weekend trailer, Jason, known in the game as The Slasher, will be arriving in Dead by Daylight on June 16. Prior to that, he’ll available on May 26 as part of the Steam public test build.

As for Jason’s abilities, his Power is split into two distinct components, the first being Omnipresent Evil—a stealth-based ability that encapsulates the Killer’s knack for popping up in unexpected places to catch his victims off guard. Activating Omnipresent Evil causes Jason to vanish from the Map entirely, allowing him to move at increased speed while giving Survivors zero clues as to his whereabouts. While invisible, Jason can track his prey through faint visual cues like footsteps.

To reappear, Jason targets key environmental points such as Pallets, Vault points, and breakable walls—bursting back into action with explosive force. For added effect, these sudden appearances can destroy breakable obstacles around him and trigger screams from nearby prey. Survivors will have to contend with the tension that comes from suddenly losing track of Jason, and knowing a vicious attack could be waiting.

The second half of Jason’s Power taps into his signature creativity when it comes to kills, utilizing the items available in his environment. Scattered throughout the Map are containers filled with makeshift projectiles—fragments of Lockers, broken Generator parts, shattered Pallets, even Hooks.

Jason can pick up and throw these items with devastating force. Unlike other ranged Killers, each projectile must be gathered individually and will only be replenished the next time Jason enters Omnipresent Evil, adding a layer of strategy to their use.

A successful hit will stagger Survivors, but under the right conditions, Jason can also score some welcome style points. If an injured Survivor is struck near a wall, they’ll be pinned in place—left helpless and suspended until Jason strides up to claim them.

Jason Voorhees has a long history in the world of video games, dating back to his unique purple & blue look in the Friday the 13th NES game. He returned in Friday the 13th: The Game, and he’s also been featured in Fortnite, Call of Duty, and Mortal Kombat over the years.

This is a big year for Jason Voorhees, with A24 and Peacock’s television series “Crystal Lake” set to premiere this coming October. The prequel series premieres on October 15, 2026.

The arrival of Jason Voorhees to Dead by Daylight is made possible by the Jason Universe, a multi-platform expansion of the Friday the 13th franchise from its original owners.

We had no idea at the time, of course, that it would be the last time for another nearly twenty years that we’d see Jason Voorhees or Friday the 13th back up on the screen again.

The franchise had been stuck in legal limbo for the past several years, with new installments in the Friday the 13th franchise unable to get off the ground while things were being worked out behind the scenes. Long story short, original Friday the 13th writer Victor Miller won the rights to that original movie’s screenplay in a legal battle with director Sean Cunningham, splitting up the franchise rights and making a massive mess of the whole situation.

Truth be told, it seems like nobody is 100% clear on who owns what and who can do what, but the two main players here are Victor Miller and Horror Inc.’s newly launched Jason Universe, the rights holders of the other Friday the 13th elements. With those two forces working together, A24 and Peacock’s upcoming prequel series “Crystal Lake” was able to take shape.

Long story short? As far as we can tell, Peacock’s “Crystal Lake” can do whatever it wants with the Friday franchise, a dream for fans who have been waiting 17 YEARS for Jason Voorhees to return to the screen. The movie rights are a bit of a different story, from what we understand, but the series will finally allow Jason Voorhees to emerge from Crystal Lake later this year.

As we just learned this morning, A24’s “Crystal Lake” from showrunner Brad Caleb Kane will premiere Thursday, October 15, 2026 on the Peacock streaming service.

But how long has it truly been since the last time we saw Jason on screen? Not counting last year’s Angry Orchard vignette Sweet Revenge from the Jason Universe team, it will have been 17 YEARS, 8 MONTHS since 2009’s Friday the 13th when “Crystal Lake” premieres on Peacock on October 15, by far the longest stretch of time ever between Friday the 13th projects.

The previous longest stretch of time between Friday the 13th movies was 8 years, 8 months. I know this because I’ve dedicated myself to keeping track for the past several years on Twitter.

What can we expect from “Crystal Lake”? Brad Caleb Kane recently told Entertainment Weekly in an interview, “In many ways, it’s a psychological thriller. It’s a paranoid ’70s thriller.”

He continued, “It has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but it’s all done in service of character and theme and place and time.”

The Dude Designs has unleashed his Paperback Nightmares series this week, featuring slasher classics reimagined in the style of classic horror paperback artwork from the 1980s!

“Here’s a series of designs I’ve had floating around in the back of my mind for over a year, and I finally found the time to sit down and bring them to life,” The Dude Designs explains.

He continues, “I’ve always loved the look and feel of classic 70s and 80s horror paperbacks, so I thought it would be fun to create some completely alternate art for Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th Part III, mainly because Part III gave us the iconic hockey mask, all done in the style of vintage pulp horror novel covers.”

“These films all originally received paperback novelizations through different publishers,” The Dude Designs notes, “so this became my own reimagining of what those books could have looked like in some parallel world of 1980s horror publishing. It was a lot of fun approaching these classics through a completely different lens, especially creating the vintage-inspired typography and layout treatments to make them feel authentic to the era. I wanted them to look like something you’d discover battered and dog-eared on a spinner rack in 1984.”

The best part? He’s selling the artwork as a set of three 18×24” screen prints.

He’s referring to the sound mixing for the “Crystal Lake” series with this Instagram post, suggesting that picture editing is locked and the audio tracks have been finalized.

What does that mean? Well, it means that “Crystal Lake” is now in the final stages of post-production. The series is expected here in 2026, but we have no indication at this time on when to expect it. There is, however, one final Friday the 13th this coming November…

Cunningham and Victor Miller having resolved their legal issues after years of court battles, Cunningham tells TMZ he hopes a new Friday the 13th movie will gain traction in the wake of the studio merger, as the rights being divided between them has been a major hurdle.

After Paramount released the first eight Friday the 13th movies throughout the 1980s, New Line scooped up the rights to Jason and produced the next three installments before being acquired by Warner Bros.

New Line and Paramount teamed up for the 2009 reboot, with Warner Bros. handling the domestic release and Paramount overseeing international distribution.

Cunningham confirms that a film treatment for an “old school” Jason movie is done.

He says the script needs a “young writer,” because the heart of the series has always been “the fear of untimely death” — and he’s too old to be worried about that these days.

Cunningham mentions he’s just a “cheerleader” for the project, but he anticipates being an executive producer if it comes to fruition.

While we continue to wait for Jason’s feature return, Peacock is bringing Friday the 13th to the small screen with the prequel series “Crystal Lake” later this year.

Set four years before Never Hike Alone, the story follows a group of hikers who get lost in a mysterious fog and stumble into the cursed grounds where the Ghost of Crystal Lake awaits. Will they escape the wrath of Jason, or become the latest in a long list of lost victims?

The final call fundraiser for the animated film is live on Kickstarter now.

Womp Stomp Films previews the 10-minute fan film, “The film features 2D animation with 3D environments by Mako Animation, presented in black and white with bold splashes of red and yellow—stylistically inspired by Sin City.” The team also teases, “Ghosts in the Fog will feature 3 unique animated kill sequences that push the limits of gore in the Friday the 13th universe—bringing a whole new dimension of terror to the screen!”

“Ghosts in the Fog is the first time Jason Voorhees has ever been featured in an animated story based on Friday the 13th,” says Vincente DiSanti, who co-directed with Juan Rivera.

The original Never Hike Alone fan film launched back in 2017 at a time when the actual Friday the 13th franchise was still mired in a legal mess. It’s one of the most popular horror franchise fan films ever made, subsequently spawning follow-ups from the same team.

This production is an independent effort by Womp Stomp Films, LLC, and its volunteer collaborators. Never Hike Alone is a work of fan fiction. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or representative of Viacom/Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, Jason Un1v3rse, Horror Inc., or the Friday the 13th franchise and its characters.

Writer-director Ian Tuason makes his feature debut on Undertone, shot on location inside his childhood home in Toronto. The film is now playing in theaters nationwide from A24.

Nina Kiri (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) stars in the acclaimed Undertone as Evy, a paranormal podcast host who moves into her dying mother’s house to be her primary caregiver.

When she receives audio recordings of a young pregnant couple experiencing supernatural noises, Evy realizes the woman’s story mirrors her own.

Each new recording scratches at her sanity, drawing her into a fate she cannot escape.

Joe Lipsett wrote in his 4.5-skull rave review for Bloody Disgusting, “I can’t remember the last time a movie made every hair on my body stand up, but undertone got me good.”

An attempted police cover-up leads to mind-bending terror in Bodycam, which looks like a 75-minute V/H/S segment. The found footage movie is now streaming on Shudder and AMC+.

Bodycam is told from the perspective of police body cameras.

When two police officers show up to investigate a domestic dispute, a startling escalation leads to a tragic accident. Not wanting to be crucified by the public, the officers attempt to cover it up — only to reveal that their body cameras aren’t the only things watching them.

Brandon Christensen (Night of the Reaper, Z) directs from a script he co-wrote with brother Ryan Christensen (Night of the Reaper). The teen body horror comedy is now playing in theaters nationwide.

Joan Huang idolizes the popular girls and dreams of being prom queen, but fears the only way to win is to look like all the past queens whose portraits line her high school halls.

Enter Ethnos: a mysterious cosmetic surgery clinic that turns people of color white. Joan undergoes the procedure and wakes up a beautiful blonde destined for the crown, but at what cost?

Vivian Wu (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III), Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (“Never Have I Ever”), Amelie Zilber (“Grown-ish”), and Fang Du also star.

Writer-director Amy Wang (“The Brothers Sun”) makes her feature debut on the project, which premiered at last year’s SXSW and took home the Narrative Grand Jury Award.

The Breakfast Club meets 28 Days Later in the zombie outbreak movie This Is Not a Test, which opened in theaters last month from IFC and Shudder. The film is now available at home.

Adam MacDonald (Backcountry, Pyewacket) writes and directs This Is Not a Test, based on Courtney Summers‘ 2012 young adult horror novel of the same name.

The film follows Sloane and a small group of her classmates who take cover in their high school to escape their suddenly apocalyptic hometown.

As danger relentlessly pounds on the doors, Sloane begins to see the world through the eyes of people who actually want to live and takes matters into her own hands.

Olivia Holt (Heart Eyes), Froy Gutierrez (The Strangers), Corteon Moore (“From”), Carson MacCormac (Clown in a Cornfield), Chloe Avakian (“Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy”), and Luke MacFarlane (Bros) star in zombie movie This Is Not a Test.

Horror icons Lin Shaye (Insidious) and Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects) headline supernatural horror comedy Scared to Death, which is now playing in select theaters.

Billed as Poland’s first Giallo movie, Dead by Dawn hit VOD outlets today.

In Dead by Dawn, set inside a legendary theater steeped in occult rumor, a rehearsal becomes a nightmare when a masked presence begins stalking the cast.

The actors become part of a sinister ritual as they’re targeted and tormented, forced to endure the night or be consumed by the performance.

In his feature debut, Polish writer-director Dawid Torrone puts an occult spin on the Italian giallo tradition — complete with stylish visuals and brutal practical kills.

Sylwia Boron, Monika Frajczyk, Adam Machalica, Lukasz Szczepanowski, Piotr Nerlewski, Bartlomiej Topa, and Paulina Zwierz star in Dead by Dawn.

Mason Gooding (Scream 7) is already back on the big screen in The Gates, which marks the final film of James Van Der Beek. It’s now playing in select theaters from Lionsgate.

The Gates follows three college students on a road trip gone wrong.

The trio takes an ill-advised shortcut through a remote gated community, where they find themselves trapped after witnessing a murder. Over the course of the night, they are blamed, hunted and fractured by their own differing belief systems, while the perpetrator (Van Der Beek) emerges as the cunning patriarch who holds the entire community under his influence.

John Burr (Muse) wrote and directed.

The Gates is rated R for “violence, language, some sexual references, and brief drug use.”

Folklore and reality blur in Red Riding, executive produced by genre favorite Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent). The film was unleashed on VOD outlets at home today.

Craig Conway — who appeared in Marshall’s The Descent, Dog Soldiers, and Doomsday — directs the reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood from a script by Peter Stylianou.

In the film, after her mother’s overdose, troubled teen Redele Riding is sent from her London council estate to live with her estranged aristocratic grandmother in the Scottish Highlands.

At first, Red is captivated by the grand estate, but beneath the elegance, she uncovers disturbing secrets: vanished children, whispers of a monstrous wolf stalking the woods, and a sinister control exerted by her grandmother and the menacing gamekeeper.

As folklore and reality blur, Red struggles to make sense of cryptic warnings left by her mother and a dark family legacy.

Victoria Tait stars as Redele alongside Bill Fellows (“Ted Lasso”), Ian Whyte (Alien vs. Predator), Lynsey Beauchamp, and Jack McEvoy (“Vikings”).

The theater chain screened the first two Friday the 13th installments last month, and they’ll be showing Jason Lives on the next Friday the 13th in November.

Friday the 13th Part 3 is directed by Steve Miner, written by Martin Kitrosser and Carol Watson, and stars Dana Kimmell, Paul Kratka, and Richard Brooker as Jason Voorhees.

In the 1982 slasher sequel, having revived from his wound, Jason Voorhees takes refuge at a cabin near Crystal Lake. As a group of co-eds arrive for their vacation, Jason continues his killing spree.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter is directed by Joseph Zito, written by Barney Cohen, and stars Kimberly Beck, Corey Feldman, Peter Barton, Crispin Glover, and Ted White as Jason Voorhees.

In the 1984 follow-up, after being mortally wounded and taken to the morgue, Jason Voorhees spontaneously revives and embarks on a killing spree as he makes his way back to his home at Camp Crystal Lake.

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this Friday the 13th than with the first official look at Peacock’s upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series, “Crystal Lake.”

Produced by A24 and created by showrunner Brad Caleb Kane (“IT: Welcome to Derry”), the “Crystal Lake” series is slated to premiere later this year on Peacock.

Linda Cardellini stars in “Crystal Lake” as Pamela Voorhees, a mother who gave up a singing career to raise her special needs child, only to take a dark turn when she loses her son — Jason.

William Catlett (Abigail), Cameron Scoggins (“Nashville”), Devin Kessler (“Godfather of Harlem”), and Gwendolyn Sundstrom also star, with Callum Vinson (“Chucky”) as young Jason Voorhees.

The cast also includes Nick Cordileone (“Warrior”), Joy Suprano (“Fleishman Is in Trouble”), Danielle Kotch (Sinister), Christopher Denham (“Shining Girls”), Nancy Nagrant (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), and Phoenix Parnevik.

The eight-episode series is set to be directed by Michael Lennox (“Derry Girls”), Celine Held & Logan George (Caddo Lake), and Quyen Tran (“The Pitt”).

“It’s a paranoid ’70s thriller,” Brad Caleb Kane previously said of the show. “It has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but it’s all done in service of character and theme and place and time.”

2026 has one more Friday the 13th coming up in November — that could be a good candidate for a premiere (or finale). Stay tuned for more on “Crystal Lake” as we learn it.

Bride of Re-Animator 4K UHD from Ignite Films

The last time a single year had three Friday the 13ths in it was eleven years ago back in 2015, and the rare phenomenon won’t happen again until 11 years from today, in 2037!

In addition to today, you can expect Friday the 13ths in March and November of this year. Yes, that’s right, we’re already getting another Friday the 13th one month from today!

The name for an irrational fear of Friday the 13th? That’d be friggatriskaidekaphobia, but horror fans certainly have no reason to fear Friday the 13th this year. While it’s been a long 17 years since the last time Jason Voorhees was up on the big screen – the 2009 Friday the 13th remake turns 17 years old today, in fact – Jason’s long-awaited return is on the horizon.

We are expecting that this year will see the premiere of A24 and Peacock’s “Crystal Lake,” the official Friday the 13th prequel television series. It will be the franchise’s first official installment in the aforementioned seventeen years, and its first Jason-centric TV series, with Brad Caleb Kane (“IT: Welcome to Derry”) steering the ship as the project’s showrunner.

What can we expect from “Crystal Lake”? Brad Caleb Kane recently told Entertainment Weekly in an interview, “In many ways, it’s a psychological thriller. It’s a paranoid ’70s thriller.”

He continued, “It has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but it’s all done in service of character and theme and place and time.”

Brad Caleb Kane also teases that star Linda Cardellini, who plays Jason’s mother Pamela Voorhees in the series, is going to “shock and surprise a lot of people” with her performance.

Callum Vinson is playing a young Jason Voorhees in the series, with Linda Cardellini starring as Mrs. Voorhees. The series will serve as an expanded prequel to the 1980 slasher.

What else is going on in the world of Jason Voorhees? Beginning today, the original Friday the 13th movies are returning to Regal theaters for all three Friday the 13th dates this year.

Here’s the schedule from Regal:

• February 13 – Friday the 13th (1980) and Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
• March 13 – Friday the 13th Part 3 3-D (1982) and Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
• November 13 – Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

We also want to mention that Paramount Scares launched the new web-series Friday the 13th: Camp Crystal Legacy today, which aims to “cut deep into the legacy of everyone’s favorite slasher franchise, with all new interviews featuring a wide array of cast and crew.”
