The Hollywood Reporter lets us know that Warner Bros. Discovery has picked up “Crystal Lake” for HBO Max in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, excluding the U.K. and Ireland.

“The series is set to debut on HBO Max across the region later this year,” THR notes.

Here in the United States, “Crystal Lake” slashes into Peacock on October 15. We know that ALL EIGHT EPISODES of “Crystal Lake” will release at the same time on that date.

Each episode has a runtime of 60 minutes.

The series follows single mother Pam Voorhees who has been unable to shake her grief after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake almost a year before. The addition of Jason marks another major horror franchise joining Hellbreak‘s expanding universe, which already includes several Universal Monsters properties such as Dracula and The Bride of Frankenstein, as well as A Quiet Place, Jaws and more.

“From the start, Hellbreak was built to bring together the icons that define the genre, and it simply wouldn’t feel complete without Jason,” said Doug Wadleigh, Spin Master’s President of Toys. “His addition to the first set marks a major milestone for the game and for fans who have been waiting to see these legends collide.”

Executive Vice President Robbie Barsamian. “Hellbreak lets fans choose from Friday the 13: The Game and Jason Universe favorites to go head-to-head with opponents.”

Developed in collaboration with Ghost Galaxy,  Hellbreak is a horror trading card game where the gameplay revolves around the idea of a “Monster Sandbox,” an arena in which fan-favorite characters from horror history fight to the bitter end. While we’ve since received more information about the show -including how all eight episodes will be released at the same time on October 15– fans wasted no time in speculating about the direction they think showrunner Brad Caleb Kane intends to take the franchise next. After all, Kane’s team is free to adapt elements from the entire Friday the 13th franchise, so it seems that anything goes at this point. That being said, I doubt we’ll be seeing young Jason depicted as a fun-sized killer with an affinity for hockey masks, as I’m of the opinion that the show is likely reaching back to the original actress behind Pamela Voorhees herself in order to fill out the prequel’s story.

You see, after sifting through behind-the-scenes interviews and plenty of special features from my own Friday the 13th collection on physical media, I learned that the late, great Betsy Palmer had come up with an elaborate backstory for Ms. Voorhees that was never properly explored in the films. She may have only accepted the iconic role because she needed money for a new car, with Palmer notoriously referring to Victor Miller’s original script as a “piece of shit”, but that didn’t stop her from taking her work seriously – and eventually even warming up to the now-iconic film.

Trained in the Stanislavski Method, an infamous system where actors use the “art of experiencing” to more realistically portray their characters, Palmer decided to build off of Miller’s script and make her own notes in order to characterize Pamela as a more complex and arguably sympathetic figure, even if only a fraction of her contributions would actually make it onscreen.

The only real information she found in the script concerned her character’s prominent class ring, and from there Palmer extrapolated an entire backstory where Pamela had a high school boyfriend during the 1940s that got her pregnant and then skipped town. This led to Pamela being forced to raise her child all on her own during a deeply conservative period in American history – another reason why the character is so bothered by the camp counselors’ promiscuity.

It was Tom Savini who first revealed to Palmer that Jason was going to be depicted as being disabled (an idea that wasn’t in the original screenplay), with this crucial addition making the actress realize that Ms. Voorhees was already overburdened even before the death of her son. The tragedy only pushed her over the edge as she became a puritanical vigilante attempting to shut down Camp Crystal Lake at any cost.

For Palmer, this means that “Camp Blood” never had any curse, as the multiple fires and poisoned water incidents that kept the camp from reopening before the summer of 1979 were merely part of Ms. Voorhees’ years-long vendetta against the property’s owners. Palmer also insisted that the killer in the sequels isn’t the original Jason, as he definitively drowned at the bottom of Crystal Lake. According to her, having Pamela’s child return even as a killer revenant would undo her entire character arc, meaning that the masked murderer who takes over her legacy must be someone or something else entirely!

These ideas match up with most of what we’ve heard about Peacock and A24’s plans for the upcoming series, which is set to follow Linda Cardellini as Pamela after she gives up a career as a singer in order to take care of her disabled son, played by Callum Vinson. That’s why I wouldn’t be surprised if the writing team decided to borrow from the woman behind the machete in order to make the series more authentic to the source material.

Of course, there are rumors floating around that the show could also feature a teenage Jason in some capacity, so we’re still not sure about how exactly Kane and company plan to adapt their project to the franchise’s ever-changing mythology. That’s why I’d like to invite fellow readers to comment below with your own theories about where you think the prequel show is headed!

For now, I think it’s safe to say that Friday the 13th fans are more than ready to binge-watch Pamela’s bloody origin story when it finally drops this October. And who knows? Maybe the show’s success could finally lead to a new mainline film…

In a chat with Variety this week, Jason Universe’s Robbie Barsamian teases that everything we’ve seen up to this point is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Jason’s return.

“We have a thrilling lineup of new projects that we can’t wait to share more details on soon.”

Barsamian also notes during the chat with Variety, “We want to give fans fresh takes on what they love most about Jason and continue to expand his world in authentic ways that resonate with horror fans today.” One of those expansions will take the form of the upcoming Peacock and A24 series “Crystal Lake,” which stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees.

“The Crystal Lake TV series will take fans back in time to tell the story of how Pamela Voorhees came to be the mother of all slashers,” Barsamian tells Variety this week.

“She’s important to the series, but sort of unexplored,” Cardellini tells the outlet. “So I thought that would be really, really fun, to do something I’d never done.”

“With Crystal Lake, A24, Peacock and [creator] Brad Caleb Kane all came together and they just had this concept for making this story about Pam Voorhees,” Cardellini (who is playing Mrs. Voorhees in the show) explains. “And if you watch the original movie, it really operates like a whodunit. Spoiler: at the end, you find out that it was Pam Voorhees.”

Cardellini continues, “She’s only in the movie for the last little bit, but she leaves this impression on the entire franchise. There’s so many movies subsequent that you’d think Jason’s always been in that mask doing what he’s doing. But that wasn’t the case. It just seemed like something that I had never done.

“I haven’t seen that many female slashers like that. To dive into who she might have been, I thought, well, that’s something I’ve never done. When I’m looking for things to do next, I ask myself what’s something I haven’t done yet. And that was one of them.”

“There’s fertile backstory there,” the actress also notes, explaining that the original Friday the 13th left the door wide open to examine the backstory behind the Camp Crystal Lake carnage. And that’s exactly what we’re getting when “Crystal Lake” premieres October 15 on Peacock.

As we already know from the weekend trailer, Jason, known in the game as The Slasher, will be arriving in Dead by Daylight on June 16. Prior to that, he’ll available on May 26 as part of the Steam public test build.

As for Jason’s abilities, his Power is split into two distinct components, the first being Omnipresent Evil—a stealth-based ability that encapsulates the Killer’s knack for popping up in unexpected places to catch his victims off guard. Activating Omnipresent Evil causes Jason to vanish from the Map entirely, allowing him to move at increased speed while giving Survivors zero clues as to his whereabouts. The second half of Jason’s Power taps into his signature creativity when it comes to kills, utilizing the items available in his environment. Scattered throughout the Map are containers filled with makeshift projectiles—fragments of Lockers, broken Generator parts, shattered Pallets, even Hooks.

Jason can pick up and throw these items with devastating force. Unlike other ranged Killers, each projectile must be gathered individually and will only be replenished the next time Jason enters Omnipresent Evil, adding a layer of strategy to their use.

A successful hit will stagger Survivors, but under the right conditions, Jason can also score some welcome style points. If an injured Survivor is struck near a wall, they’ll be pinned in place—left helpless and suspended until Jason strides up to claim them.

This is a big year for Jason Voorhees, with A24 and Peacock’s television series “Crystal Lake” set to premiere this coming October. The prequel series premieres on October 15, 2026.

The arrival of Jason Voorhees to Dead by Daylight is made possible by the Jason Universe, a multi-platform expansion of the Friday the 13th franchise from its original owners.

We had no idea at the time, of course, that it would be the last time for another nearly twenty years that we’d see Jason Voorhees or Friday the 13th back up on the screen again.

The franchise had been stuck in legal limbo for the past several years, with new installments in the Friday the 13th franchise unable to get off the ground while things were being worked out behind the scenes. Long story short, original Friday the 13th writer Victor Miller won the rights to that original movie’s screenplay in a legal battle with director Sean Cunningham, splitting up the franchise rights and making a massive mess of the whole situation.

Truth be told, it seems like nobody is 100% clear on who owns what and who can do what, but the two main players here are Victor Miller and Horror Inc.’s newly launched Jason Universe, the rights holders of the other Friday the 13th elements. With those two forces working together, A24 and Peacock’s upcoming prequel series “Crystal Lake” was able to take shape.

Long story short? As far as we can tell, Peacock’s “Crystal Lake” can do whatever it wants with the Friday franchise, a dream for fans who have been waiting 17 YEARS for Jason Voorhees to return to the screen. The movie rights are a bit of a different story, from what we understand, but the series will finally allow Jason Voorhees to emerge from Crystal Lake later this year.

As we just learned this morning, A24’s “Crystal Lake” from showrunner Brad Caleb Kane will premiere Thursday, October 15, 2026 on the Peacock streaming service.

But how long has it truly been since the last time we saw Jason on screen? Not counting last year’s Angry Orchard vignette Sweet Revenge from the Jason Universe team, it will have been 17 YEARS, 8 MONTHS since 2009’s Friday the 13th when “Crystal Lake” premieres on Peacock on October 15, by far the longest stretch of time ever between Friday the 13th projects.

The previous longest stretch of time between Friday the 13th movies was 8 years, 8 months. I know this because I’ve dedicated myself to keeping track for the past several years on Twitter.

What can we expect from “Crystal Lake”? Brad Caleb Kane recently told Entertainment Weekly in an interview, “In many ways, it’s a psychological thriller. It’s a paranoid ’70s thriller.”

He continued, “It has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but it’s all done in service of character and theme and place and time.”

Callum Vinson (“Chucky”) is playing young Jason in “Crystal Lake,” which will tell the origin story of the masked slasher who has stalked the grounds of Crystal Lake for decades.

Linda Cardellini stars as Pamela Voorhees, a mother who gave up a singing career to raise her special needs child, only to take a dark turn when she loses her son — Jason.

The show’s cast also includes William Catlett (Abigail), Cameron Scoggins (“Nashville”), Devin Kessler (“Godfather of Harlem”), Gwendolyn Sundstrom, Nick Cordileone (“Warrior”), Joy Suprano (“Fleishman Is in Trouble”), Danielle Kotch (Sinister), Christopher Denham (“Shining Girls”), Nancy Nagrant (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), and Phoenix Parnevik.

The eight-episode series is set to be directed by Michael Lennox (“Derry Girls”), Celine Held & Logan George (Caddo Lake), and Quyen Tran (“The Pitt”).

From A24 and streamer Peacock, “Crystal Lake” will notably be the first official Friday the 13th project since the Platinum Dunes remake of the original classic way back in 2009.

The Dude Designs has unleashed his Paperback Nightmares series this week, featuring slasher classics reimagined in the style of classic horror paperback artwork from the 1980s!

“Here’s a series of designs I’ve had floating around in the back of my mind for over a year, and I finally found the time to sit down and bring them to life,” The Dude Designs explains.

He continues, “I’ve always loved the look and feel of classic 70s and 80s horror paperbacks, so I thought it would be fun to create some completely alternate art for Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th Part III, mainly because Part III gave us the iconic hockey mask, all done in the style of vintage pulp horror novel covers.”

“These films all originally received paperback novelizations through different publishers,” The Dude Designs notes, “so this became my own reimagining of what those books could have looked like in some parallel world of 1980s horror publishing. It was a lot of fun approaching these classics through a completely different lens, especially creating the vintage-inspired typography and layout treatments to make them feel authentic to the era. I wanted them to look like something you’d discover battered and dog-eared on a spinner rack in 1984.”

The best part? He’s selling the artwork as a set of three 18×24” screen prints.

Brad Caleb Kane writes on Instagram, “All 8 episode final mixes are done and dusted. Which means Coltrane and red wine in a janky air b&b glass. Here’s to teevee!!!!”

He’s referring to the sound mixing for the “Crystal Lake” series with this Instagram post, suggesting that picture editing is locked and the audio tracks have been finalized.

What does that mean? Well, it means that “Crystal Lake” is now in the final stages of post-production. The series is expected here in 2026, but we have no indication at this time on when to expect it. There is, however, one final Friday the 13th this coming November…

With franchise co-creators Sean S. Cunningham and Victor Miller having resolved their legal issues after years of court battles, Cunningham tells TMZ he hopes a new Friday the 13th movie will gain traction in the wake of the studio merger, as the rights being divided between them has been a major hurdle.

After Paramount released the first eight Friday the 13th movies throughout the 1980s, New Line scooped up the rights to Jason and produced the next three installments before being acquired by Warner Bros.

New Line and Paramount teamed up for the 2009 reboot, with Warner Bros. handling the domestic release and Paramount overseeing international distribution.

Cunningham confirms that a film treatment for an “old school” Jason movie is done.

He says the script needs a “young writer,” because the heart of the series has always been “the fear of untimely death” — and he’s too old to be worried about that these days.

Cunningham mentions he’s just a “cheerleader” for the project, but he anticipates being an executive producer if it comes to fruition.

While we continue to wait for Jason’s feature return, Peacock is bringing Friday the 13th to the small screen with the prequel series “Crystal Lake” later this year.

In the new Friday the 13th fan project from Womp Stomp Films, witness Jason Voorhees in haunting 2D animation, brought to life by Mako Animation and Armáss Productions.

Set four years before Never Hike Alone, the story follows a group of hikers who get lost in a mysterious fog and stumble into the cursed grounds where the Ghost of Crystal Lake awaits. Will they escape the wrath of Jason, or become the latest in a long list of lost victims?

The final call fundraiser for the animated film is live on Kickstarter now.

Womp Stomp Films previews the 10-minute fan film, “The film features 2D animation with 3D environments by Mako Animation, presented in black and white with bold splashes of red and yellow—stylistically inspired by Sin City.” The team also teases, “Ghosts in the Fog will feature 3 unique animated kill sequences that push the limits of gore in the Friday the 13th universe—bringing a whole new dimension of terror to the screen!”

“Ghosts in the Fog is the first time Jason Voorhees has ever been featured in an animated story based on Friday the 13th,” says Vincente DiSanti, who co-directed with Juan Rivera.

The original Never Hike Alone fan film launched back in 2017 at a time when the actual Friday the 13th franchise was still mired in a legal mess. It’s one of the most popular horror franchise fan films ever made, subsequently spawning follow-ups from the same team.

This production is an independent effort by Womp Stomp Films, LLC, and its volunteer collaborators. Never Hike Alone is a work of fan fiction. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or representative of Viacom/Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, Jason Un1v3rse, Horror Inc., or the Friday the 13th franchise and its characters.

Writer-director Ian Tuason makes his feature debut on Undertone, shot on location inside his childhood home in Toronto. The film is now playing in theaters nationwide from A24.

Nina Kiri (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) stars in the acclaimed Undertone as Evy, a paranormal podcast host who moves into her dying mother’s house to be her primary caregiver.

When she receives audio recordings of a young pregnant couple experiencing supernatural noises, Evy realizes the woman’s story mirrors her own.

Each new recording scratches at her sanity, drawing her into a fate she cannot escape.

Joe Lipsett wrote in his 4.5-skull rave review for Bloody Disgusting, “I can’t remember the last time a movie made every hair on my body stand up, but undertone got me good.”

An attempted police cover-up leads to mind-bending terror in Bodycam, which looks like a 75-minute V/H/S segment. The found footage movie is now streaming on Shudder and AMC+.

Bodycam is told from the perspective of police body cameras.

When two police officers show up to investigate a domestic dispute, a startling escalation leads to a tragic accident. Not wanting to be crucified by the public, the officers attempt to cover it up — only to reveal that their body cameras aren’t the only things watching them.

Brandon Christensen (Night of the Reaper, Z) directs from a script he co-wrote with brother Ryan Christensen (Night of the Reaper). Jaime Callica (Wayward Pines), Sean Rogerson (Grave Encounters), Catherine Lough Haggquist (“Supernatural”), Angel Prater (The Puppetman), and Keegan Connor Tracy (Final Destination 2) star.

Shirley Chen (Dìdi) and Mckenna Grace (Five Nights at Freddy’s 2) experience a unique body-horror, body-swap situation in Slanted, described as “Mean Girls meets The Substance.”

The teen body horror comedy is now playing in theaters nationwide.

Joan Huang idolizes the popular girls and dreams of being prom queen, but fears the only way to win is to look like all the past queens whose portraits line her high school halls.

Enter Ethnos: a mysterious cosmetic surgery clinic that turns people of color white. Joan undergoes the procedure and wakes up a beautiful blonde destined for the crown, but at what cost?

Vivian Wu (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III), Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (“Never Have I Ever”), Amelie Zilber (“Grown-ish”), and Fang Du also star.

Writer-director Amy Wang (“The Brothers Sun”) makes her feature debut on the project, which premiered at last year’s SXSW and took home the Narrative Grand Jury Award.

The Breakfast Club meets 28 Days Later in the zombie outbreak movie This Is Not a Test, which opened in theaters last month from IFC and Shudder. The film is now available at home.

Adam MacDonald (Backcountry, Pyewacket) writes and directs This Is Not a Test, based on Courtney Summers‘ 2012 young adult horror novel of the same name.

The film follows Sloane and a small group of her classmates who take cover in their high school to escape their suddenly apocalyptic hometown.

As danger relentlessly pounds on the doors, Sloane begins to see the world through the eyes of people who actually want to live and takes matters into her own hands.

Olivia Holt (Heart Eyes), Froy Gutierrez (The Strangers), Corteon Moore (“From”), Carson MacCormac (Clown in a Cornfield), Chloe Avakian (“Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy”), and Luke MacFarlane (Bros) star in zombie movie This Is Not a Test.

Horror icons Lin Shaye (Insidious) and Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects) headline supernatural horror comedy Scared to Death, which is now playing in select theaters.

The film centers on a group of filmmakers who attend a seance at an abandoned orphanage in order to research their horror movie. When the ritual begins, the cast and crew are trapped inside and tormented by the spirits of the children — and something far worse.

Olivier Paris, Victoria Konefal (“Days of Our Lives”), B.J. Minor (“Bel-Air”), Jade Chynoweth (300: Rise of an Empire), Rae Dawn Chong (Commando), Lucinda Jenney (Thinner), and musician Kurt Deimer (Halloween 2018) round out the cast.

Billed as Poland’s first Giallo movie, Dead by Dawn hit VOD outlets today.

In Dead by Dawn, set inside a legendary theater steeped in occult rumor, a rehearsal becomes a nightmare when a masked presence begins stalking the cast.

The actors become part of a sinister ritual as they’re targeted and tormented, forced to endure the night or be consumed by the performance.

In his feature debut, Polish writer-director Dawid Torrone puts an occult spin on the Italian giallo tradition — complete with stylish visuals and brutal practical kills.

Sylwia Boron, Monika Frajczyk, Adam Machalica, Lukasz Szczepanowski, Piotr Nerlewski, Bartlomiej Topa, and Paulina Zwierz star in Dead by Dawn.

Mason Gooding (Scream 7) is already back on the big screen in The Gates, which marks the final film of James Van Der Beek. It’s now playing in select theaters from Lionsgate.

The Gates follows three college students on a road trip gone wrong.

The trio takes an ill-advised shortcut through a remote gated community, where they find themselves trapped after witnessing a murder. Over the course of the night, they are blamed, hunted and fractured by their own differing belief systems, while the perpetrator (Van Der Beek) emerges as the cunning patriarch who holds the entire community under his influence.

John Burr (Muse) wrote and directed.

The Gates is rated R for “violence, language, some sexual references, and brief drug use.”

Folklore and reality blur in Red Riding, executive produced by genre favorite Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent). The film was unleashed on VOD outlets at home today.

Craig Conway — who appeared in Marshall’s The Descent, Dog Soldiers, and Doomsday — directs the reimagining of Little Red Riding Hood from a script by Peter Stylianou.

In the film, after her mother’s overdose, troubled teen Redele Riding is sent from her London council estate to live with her estranged aristocratic grandmother in the Scottish Highlands.

At first, Red is captivated by the grand estate, but beneath the elegance, she uncovers disturbing secrets: vanished children, whispers of a monstrous wolf stalking the woods, and a sinister control exerted by her grandmother and the menacing gamekeeper.

As folklore and reality blur, Red struggles to make sense of cryptic warnings left by her mother and a dark family legacy.

Victoria Tait stars as Redele alongside Bill Fellows (“Ted Lasso”), Ian Whyte (Alien vs. Predator), Lynsey Beauchamp, and Jack McEvoy (“Vikings”).

Friday the 13th Part 3 is directed by Steve Miner, written by Martin Kitrosser and Carol Watson, and stars Dana Kimmell, Paul Kratka, and Richard Brooker as Jason Voorhees.

In the 1982 slasher sequel, having revived from his wound, Jason Voorhees takes refuge at a cabin near Crystal Lake. As a group of co-eds arrive for their vacation, Jason continues his killing spree.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter is directed by Joseph Zito, written by Barney Cohen, and stars Kimberly Beck, Corey Feldman, Peter Barton, Crispin Glover, and Ted White as Jason Voorhees.

In the 1984 follow-up, after being mortally wounded and taken to the morgue, Jason Voorhees spontaneously revives and embarks on a killing spree as he makes his way back to his home at Camp Crystal Lake.

Launched in 2017, Friday the 13th: The Game was an asymmetrical survival horror game developed by IllFonic and published by Gun Media. Updates were eventually halted due to licensing issues, with all online services discontinued at the end of 2024.

The last time a single year had three Friday the 13ths in it was eleven years ago back in 2015, and the rare phenomenon won’t happen again until 11 years from today, in 2037!

In addition to today, you can expect Friday the 13ths in March and November of this year. Yes, that’s right, we’re already getting another Friday the 13th one month from today!

The name for an irrational fear of Friday the 13th? That’d be friggatriskaidekaphobia, but horror fans certainly have no reason to fear Friday the 13th this year. While it’s been a long 17 years since the last time Jason Voorhees was up on the big screen – the 2009 Friday the 13th remake turns 17 years old today, in fact – Jason’s long-awaited return is on the horizon.

We are expecting that this year will see the premiere of A24 and Peacock’s “Crystal Lake,” the official Friday the 13th prequel television series. It will be the franchise’s first official installment in the aforementioned seventeen years, and its first Jason-centric TV series, with Brad Caleb Kane (“IT: Welcome to Derry”) steering the ship as the project’s showrunner.

What can we expect from “Crystal Lake”? Brad Caleb Kane recently told Entertainment Weekly in an interview, “In many ways, it’s a psychological thriller. It’s a paranoid ’70s thriller.”

He continued, “It has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but it’s all done in service of character and theme and place and time.”

Brad Caleb Kane also teases that star Linda Cardellini, who plays Jason’s mother Pamela Voorhees in the series, is going to “shock and surprise a lot of people” with her performance.

Callum Vinson is playing a young Jason Voorhees in the series, with Linda Cardellini starring as Mrs. Voorhees. The series will serve as an expanded prequel to the 1980 slasher.

What else is going on in the world of Jason Voorhees? Beginning today, the original Friday the 13th movies are returning to Regal theaters for all three Friday the 13th dates this year.

Here’s the schedule from Regal:

• February 13 – Friday the 13th (1980) and Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
• March 13 – Friday the 13th Part 3 3-D (1982) and Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
• November 13 – Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

We also want to mention that Paramount Scares launched the new web-series Friday the 13th: Camp Crystal Legacy today, which aims to “cut deep into the legacy of everyone’s favorite slasher franchise, with all new interviews featuring a wide array of cast and crew.”

Dread Central has learned that, in partnership with Jason Universe, NECA is making collectibles based on Friday the 13th: The Game.

They include Part 8 Jason, inspired by Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, and Part 9 Jason, inspired by Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. Prototypes will be on display at Toy Fair.

They’re also showing off the final production figure of the previously announced Savini Jason, designed by special effects legend Tom Savini.

The fiery take on the horror icon will come with an alternate light-up head and a pitchfork, along with other interchangeable parts and accessories. Pre-orders are expected to launch in the near future.

Earlier today, NECA debuted the Pamela Voorhees shrine diorama, also based on Friday the 13th: The Game.

Cunningham’s film is often dismissed as a copycat of John Carpenter’s iconic Halloween, but the summer camp horror is much more than a carbon copy. Admittedly reverse-engineered to highlight a calendar date — thus ensuring annual rewatches — Friday the 13th clarifies a burgeoning slasher formula while evolving the field of special effects. The story does follow then-emerging guidelines, later codified in Carol J. Clover’s 1992 treatise Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film. A group of sexy coeds gathers at a terrible place only to find themselves picked off one by one by a killer wielding a phallic weapon.

But Friday the 13th makes one major deviation: the mysterious killer is not a hulking madman in a mask, but a grieving woman trying to process her rage.

On a dark and stormy summer night, Alice (Adrienne King) finds the dead bodies of her fellow counselors artfully staged all over the camp. As she stumbles, sobbing, out into the rain, she bumps into a friendly woman. Mrs. Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) calms her fears and assures Alice that she is “an old friend of the Christys’” who own the camp. But as they go back to call for help, Alice sees a darker side to this grinning stranger. Mrs. Voorhees recalls her own son’s time at camp, including the day he drowned in the lake. “The counselors weren’t paying any attention… They were making love while that young boy drowned.” We realize that not only has she slaughtered all of Alice’s friends, but she’s also responsible for the two gruesome murders that open the film. The grief-stricken mother channels the voice of her child, chanting, “Kill her, Mommy! Kill her!” words that weave themselves through the film’s eerie score.

Mrs. Voorhees remains an anomaly in the slasher realm, though her galvanizing voice would go on to define the franchise. Subsequent chapters follow her resurrected son, Jason, who grows up to be a hulking madman, dispatching victims with his trusty machete. A classically trained actress known for prominent work on stage and screen, Palmer faced heavy criticism for her role in what was then considered a controversial subgenre. She was particularly lambasted by critic Gene Siskel, who took the egregious step of including the name of her hometown in his review and encouraging his readers to send her hate mail. Now this pearl-clutching seems fairly quaint. It’s rooted in the misconception that older women should be maternal figures and nothing more, which erases female humanity. After all, if male characters can go berserk and slash through hordes of camp counselors, shouldn’t that arc be available to women as well?

Developed as a follow-up to the surprise success of Wes Craven’s 1996 film, Scream 2 follows final girl Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) to the campus of Windsor College, where she’s once again stalked by a costumed killer. Like both franchises’ opening entries, the story plays out like a horrific whodunit as Sidney and fellow survivors Gale (Courteney Cox) and Dewey (David Arquette) try to identify the killer on the other end of the line. In a spectacular final showdown, we learn that this time Ghostface is actually Mickey (Timothy Olyphant), the “freaky Tarantino film student.” But true to form, Craven has a second killer hiding under the mask. Gale and Sidney find themselves held at gunpoint by Debbie Salt (Laurie Metcalf), who’s been masquerading as a local reporter.

We first meet the wide-eyed woman as she shamelessly flatters Gale and desperately tries to scoop her competition. But Sidney, a Woodsboro native, finally recognizes the woman from her painful past. We find out that Debbie Salt is actually Mrs. Loomis, mother of Sidney’s dead boyfriend Billy (Skeet Ulrich), who was also the first Ghostface killer. When Sidney shoots her baby boy — an understandable act of self-defense — she ignites a mother’s insatiable rage. Mrs. Loomis has spent extensive time grooming and bankrolling the gullible Mickey to conceal her ultimate quest for revenge.

In the first film’s shocking conclusion, Billy and his partner Stu (Matthew Lillard) claim that the real-life “movie” they are making is scarier if it has no motive. But closing in on his final victim, Billy reveals the true source of his pain. He whispers to Sidney, “Your slut mother was fucking my father, and she’s the reason my mom moved out and abandoned me.” After killing Sidney’s mom one year ago, they’ve kicked off a new murder spree to commemorate the anniversary of her death. Now, Billy’s mother seeks similar vengeance against the innocent young woman who murdered her son.

By contrast, Mrs. Voorhees is much more disturbed. The campers who originally caused her son’s death are long gone, and she must satisfy her grief through proxy revenge. Advancing on Alice, who never met Jason, she exclaims, “You let him drown! You never paid any attention. Look what you did to him!” Unable to process her rage and guilt, the bereaved woman sees all counselors as one and the same, irresponsible teens who deserve to die. Mrs. Loomis racks up a similarly lengthy list of kills, but most of her victims are collateral damage meant to implicate Mickey by mirroring Billy’s crimes. She will off anyone who gets in her way, but Mrs. Loomis’ calculated rage leads to Sidney alone.

Yet beneath these murderous exteriors, both mothers are searching for absolution. After all, they were gone when their sons were in danger. Mrs. Voorhees was working as a cook at the camp, assuming Jason would be safe with the counselors. Mrs. Loomis left her husband in the wake of his betrayal, likely hoping to heal her broken heart in privacy. Neither is responsible for their sons’ misfortune. However, they both secretly believe that had they only been present, they could have protected their children from harm. Their murderous rage hides misplaced anger and guilt over this perceived abandonment. And they are not alone in this self-condemnation. Ever since Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho gave us Norma Bates — whose own son Billy references —  we’ve perfected the misogynist art of blaming a mother for the crimes of her son.

But Mrs. Voorhees has a more memorable legacy. When Casey bungles Ghostface’s infamous question, “Name the killer in Friday the 13th,” she sparks an exciting new type of slasher. Billy and Stu have grown up watching Mrs. Voorhees’s story and patterned their own “movie” after that of her son. This surprising moment passes a torch from the original guard of slasher killers to those who will push the subgenre to new heights. As he chases Sidney with a knife, Billy insists, “Movies don’t create psychos. Movies make psychos more creative!”

Mrs. Loomis may pin her motive on Sidney, but she owes her existence to Mr. Voorhees.

Brad Caleb Kane (“IT: Welcome to Derry”), showrunner of A24’s upcoming prequel series, shared the news on Instagram.

“Lunch with the maestro and composer of the iconic [Friday the 13th] Ki Ki Ki Ma Ma Ma theme [Harry Manfredini]. Cookin’ up some fresh nightmare fuel for ya,” Kane captioned a photo of the two them at lunch.

It’s unclear if Manfredini will be the series’ main composer or take on a different role — contributor, consultant, or perhaps writing the opening title theme? — but in any event, his involvement is a show of good faith for fans.

Linda Cardellini stars in “Crystal Lake” as Mrs. Voorhees, a mother who gave up a singing career to raise her special needs child, only to take a dark turn when she loses her son — Jason Voorhees.

William Catlett (Abigail), Cameron Scoggins (“Nashville”), Devin Kessler (“Godfather of Harlem”), and Gwendolyn Sundstrom also star, with Callum Vinson (“Chucky”) as young Jason.

The eight-episode series is set to be directed by Michael Lennox (“Derry Girls”), Celine Held & Logan George (Caddo Lake), and Quyen Tran (“The Pitt”).

A staple of the series, Manfredini composed the scores for nine of its twelve installments: Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th Part 2, Friday the 13th Part III, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday, and Jason X.

Manfredini also worked on Friday the 13th: The Game and the Crystal Lake Memories documentary, along with such cult classics as House, Wishmaster, Swamp Thing, DeepStar Six, and The Hills Have Eyes Part II.

“Crystal Lake” is due out on Peacock later this year.

Regal is celebrating with screenings of five installments in the Friday the 13th franchise across the three horror holidays.

Here’s the schedule:

• February 13 – Friday the 13th (1980) and Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981)
• March 13 – Friday the 13th Part 3 3-D (1982) and Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984)
• November 13 – Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986)

The press release notes that Regal purposefully omitted Friday the 13th: A New Beginning “out of respect to the murderous legacy of the Voorhees family.”

Regal also teases “something big planned to elevate the horror moviegoing experience on the final (un)lucky day in November.” Stay tuned for more.

“Winter has never been done in the Friday the 13th franchise, and we’ve always dreamed about it,” Swift told ComicBook.com. “We want to see visible breath coming through the holes in the hockey mask. We want to see red blood drips in pristine white snow. We want Jason to jab a long sharp icicle through a camp counselor’s eye.”

Swift continues, “In the opening scene, Crystal Lake is frozen solid. Two naughty teens go out onto the frozen ice to play hockey. The puck slides… and stops right on top of what appears to be a dead girl under the ice. It’s Whitney from our last chapter.

“Then, on the shoreline, they see an imposing figure who looks like he wants to join them. Only he isn’t holding a hockey stick. It’s a machete.”

The reveal of Whitney’s corpse confirms that the 2009 film’s final girl, played by Amanda Righetti, did not survive the wrath of Jason Voorhees.

After the cold open, Shannon and Swift’s sequel would have seen Camp Crystal Lake open for business once again. “We had a really awesome zipline kill that I always loved,” Shannon teased.

While the sequel never came to fruition, A24’s Friday the 13th prequel series “Crystal Lake” is due out later this year on Peacock. Meanwhile, Shannon and Swift went on to pen Sam Raimi’s Send Help, in theaters now.

Kinnaman played Pam in the Friday the 13th installment that didn’t actually feature the real Jason Voorhees, and they poke fun at that little fun fact in the festive short film.

“Isn’t this wild? This is the first time we’re technically meeting each other in person,” Kinnaman says to Jason when he shows up for her Christmas party in “Season’s Screamings.”

What can we expect from “Crystal Lake”? Brad Caleb Kane tells Entertainment Weekly in a brand new interview, “In many ways, it’s a psychological thriller. It’s a paranoid ’70s thriller.”

He continues, “It has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but it’s all done in service of character and theme and place and time.”

“I tried to think about Crystal Lake and a Friday the 13th prequel as, ‘What era did the first movie come out of?’ It came out of the paranoid ’70s thriller era,” Caleb Kane goes on to explain. “It came out of the mistrust-of-institutions era. It came out of the women’s lib era, the National Organization for Women era, this consciousness-raising awakening era in America. I wanted to go and play with all of those themes.”

Brad Caleb Kane also teases that star Linda Cardellini, who plays Jason’s mother Pamela Voorhees in the series, is going to “shock and surprise a lot of people” with her performance.

He explains in his chat with EW, “I think [Linda Cardellini’s] gonna get a lot of attention for this role. She’s inconceivably brilliant in it. I can’t really say any more.”

Callum Vinson is playing a young Jason Voorhees in the series, with Linda Cardellini starring as Mrs. Voorhees. The series will serve as an expanded prequel to the 1980 slasher.

“Crystal Lake” also stars William Catlett (A Thousand and One, Constellation), Devin Kessler (Godfather of Harlem), Cameron Scoggins (Shades of Blue, Nashville) and Gwendolyn Sundstrom. Nick Cordileone is Crazy Ralph, Danielle Kotch is Claudette, and Phoenix Parnevik is Barry, all characters from the original Friday the 13th movie.

Nancy Nagrant will play Kay Christy, a relative of Steve Christy from Friday the 13th (1980), while Joy Suprano (Fleishman is in Trouble, Best Foot Forward) will also star.

As it’s not unprecedented for horror franchises to resurrect fan-favorite characters, I asked Glover during a recent conversation if he’d be interested in returning to the Friday the 13th franchise if the opportunity presented itself.

“For some reason, that really makes me laugh,” Glover guffaws.

“Anything is possible,” he says. “That is such an unlikely thing that would happen. It’s not something I’ve ever even contemplated. I don’t really see how that would happen, but you never say never, I suppose.

“It is funny to me how that particular film and franchise is such a thing, because it certainly wasn’t what I was in it for, but people really do like the Friday the 13th series.”

Glover recalls, “The same year — it might have been the very month — that the first Friday the 13th came out, there was a re-release of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I was 16, and I was seeing a lot of films, driving around Los Angeles. That was an important year for me.”

He continues, “When I saw Texas Chain Saw Massacre as the re-release, I liked it. I thought it was an interesting movie. And then I went and saw Friday the 13th, the first one, in its first run at the movie theater.

“Because I had just seen Texas Chain Saw Massacre, to me, it seemed derivative. My sense was Texas Chain Saw Massacre was the better film. It wasn’t like I hated Friday the 13th, but I wasn’t compelled to go see another one of the movies.”

Glover acknowledges, “What it really is, is that the entire slasher film genre is essentially all derivative of the original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I thought that was a good movie. I’m not that drawn to the genre as a filmgoer, but I understand there are people that like it.”

When it came time to audition for Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Glover reflects, “It was the fourth part of a series that I hadn’t seen the second or third, so I wasn’t particularly thinking, ‘Wow, this will be great!’ I was thinking, ‘I need a job as an actor!'”

He adds, “I found the person I was going to be auditioning with through their agents. I knew by that time that it was good, if you’re going into an audition with somebody, to work with them before, just so energetically the scene played well.

“We rehearsed it, and then went in and did the audition, and I got the part. I was glad I got the part, because I needed to work,” he chuckles.

Released in 1984, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter saw Jason Voorhees return to stalk a group of friends renting a house near Crystal Lake.

Scream Factory wrote on social media, “The Friday the 13th Collection, featuring 12 films, 16 discs, and hours of bloody-good bonus features, will be going out of print before next Shocktober.”

The alert drove fans to sell out the set from Shout Factory website. It’s also out of stock on Amazon, although it’s available new from third party sellers starting at $184.99.

The 16-disc box set includes all 12 films in the iconic slasher franchise, each housed in its own Blu-ray case with original theatrical artwork. They’re collected in a rigid slipcover wit artwork by Devon Whitehead alongside a 40-page booklet featuring essays and archival photography.

Friday the 13th launched in 1980, followed by Friday the 13th Part 2 in 1981, Friday the 13th Part 3 in 1982, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter in 1984, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning in 1985, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives in 1986, Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood in 1988, and Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan in 1989.

The franchise continued with Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday in 1993, Jason X in 2001, Freddy vs. Jason in 2003, and the Friday the 13th reboot in 2009.

Jason recently returned in the short film Sweet Revenge, and the Friday the 13th legacy will continue with the prequel series “Crystal Lake” on Peacock in 2026. A new film and video game are also in early development.

As for the Sky deal outside the United States, Deadline notes, “The deal covers the United Kingdom and Ireland and will see the series play on Sky and its streaming service, Now.”

Sky’s Katie Keenan said in a statement, “We are so excited to bring Crystal Lake, the back storyline to the iconic Friday the 13^th franchise. Snapping up this show demonstrates our commitment to bringing our customers the best US drama series from one of the hottest US studios. We are thrilled to be in partnership with A24 and Peacock on this project.”

Callum Vinson is playing a young Jason Voorhees in the series, with Linda Cardellini starring as Mrs. Voorhees. The series will serve as an expanded prequel to the 1980 slasher.

“Crystal Lake” also stars William Catlett (A Thousand and One, Constellation), Devin Kessler (Godfather of Harlem), Cameron Scoggins (Shades of Blue, Nashville) and Gwendolyn Sundstrom. Nick Cordileone is Crazy Ralph, Danielle Kotch is Claudette, and Phoenix Parnevik is Barry, all characters from the original Friday the 13th movie.

Nancy Nagrant will play Kay Christy, a relative of Steve Christy from Friday the 13th (1980), while Joy Suprano (Fleishman is in Trouble, Best Foot Forward) will also star.

The eight-episode series is set to be directed by Michael Lennox (“Derry Girls”), Celine Held & Logan George (Caddo Lake), and Quyen Tran (“The Pitt”).

Brad Caleb Kane (It: Welcome to Derry) will be the project’s showrunner.

This year’s event will run from October 9 until November 1, and while details on the event won’t be revealed until tomorrow, leave it to those trusty dataminers to give us some info. For starters, Jason will reportedly play a big part this year, not only with a skin, but also a medallion that grants stealth-based perks.

Meanwhile, Scooby-Doo’s Mystery Inc. gang will have their own skins, a Mystery Machine SUV, Scooby’s Theme Song by Simple Plan, and more. Ghostface and The Grabber will also have their own skins. It’s not clear yet what Huggy Wuggy will bring to the event.

Nevertheless, Jason’s having a busy Halloween this year. Not content with just being in Fortnite, Jason is also in Call of Duty‘s “The Haunting” event this year, alongside Chucky from Child’s Play and the Predator.

But what about a new movie? Jason Universe’s Robbie Barsamian recently teased that a new Jason Voorhees movie and video game are in the works, and he doubles down on those comments in an interview that was just published in the new issue of SFX Magazine.

“We are actively working on a new movie – which will be the 13th in the franchise – as well as a new video game,” Barsamian teases in the new issue of SFX Magazine (via Games Radar).

Barsamian also teases in the chat with the magazine that Jason will also be returning “in other unexpected ways.” He notes, “We’re exploring a variety of opportunities, but consistently staying focused on authenticity.” Stay tuned for more on the Jason Universe as we learn it.
