Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) brought the Jurassic World franchise back to the big screen last year with Jurassic World Rebirth, which stomped its way to $869 million at the worldwide box office. Needless to say, this franchise is still incredibly popular with audiences, and Deadline confirms that a new Jurassic film is in development.

According to a new report from the outlet tonight, however, Gareth Edwards will not be returning to direct the next installment in the Jurassic World movie franchise.

Deadline details, “Insiders say the decision was made due to creative differences and Gareth Edwards will now focus on other original projects he is developing as the studio begins to open up the search for a new director.” Universal Studios released the following statement to the outlet: “We had an incredible experience working with Gareth on Jurassic World Rebirth.”

Deadline goes on to explain that Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali are expected to return for the Rebirth sequel, with David Koepp again writing the script.

Universal could begin filming the next Jurassic movie as early as next year.

Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

Jurassic World Rebirth was something of a reboot for the franchise, getting back to basics and moving on from any characters previously featured in the Park and World trilogies.

In Jurassic World Rebirth

A covert extraction team races to the most dangerous place on Earth, an island research facility where dinosaurs too deadly for the original Jurassic Park were left behind. Their mission: collect DNA from three colossal creatures to unlock a drug with huge benefits for humanity. In a terrain populated by perils, they will make a shocking discovery that has been hidden for years.

A course correction for the franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth is now available on Digital at home ahead of a physical media release from Universal on September 9, and we’ve got an exclusive sneak peek at one of the film’s bonus features to share with you this week.

From the behind-the-scenes featurette entitled Jurassic World Rebirth: Hatching a New Era, the clip focuses on the creature design of the Distortus Rex, an all-new dino creation.

Whether or not the Distortus Rex is actually a “dinosaur” is up for debate – for what it’s worth, visual effects supervisor David Vickery calls it a “creature” and says he “can’t call it a dinosaur because it’s not” – it’s one of the most monstrous creations from the franchise to date, intentionally designed to look like a mix between a Xenomorph and a Rancor from Star Wars.

Director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) told Empire, “It’s kind of like if the T-Rex was designed by H.R. Giger, and then that whole thing had sex with a Rancor. It’s a design that I was really happy with. I’d like to buy the toy of it when it comes out.”

Watch our exclusive featurette below to see how the D-Rex came to life on screen.

From executive producer Steven Spielberg, the seventh installment in the dinosaur franchise is directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One) and written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible). The full Special Features package includes…

  • Audio Commentary with Director Gareth Edwards, Production Designer James Clyne, and First Assistant Director Jack Ravenscroft
  • Audio Commentary with Director Gareth Edwards, Editor Jabez Olssen, and Visual Effects Supervisor David Vickery
  • Alternate Opening
  • 2 Deleted Scenes: “Raptors” and “Mutadon Attack”
  • Jurassic World Rebirth: Hatching a New Era
    • The World Evolves – Journey into a reimagined Jurassic World with Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali and the rest of the cast and filmmakers.
    • Off the Deep End – Dive into the thrilling ocean sequence and learn about the challenges of shooting on open water, the one-of-a-kind gimbal used to toss around the Essex and Mariposa, and the VFX wizardry that brought the Mosasaurus and Spinosaurs to life.
    • Trekking Through Thailand – Follow the cast and crew’s footsteps as they navigate the challenges of shooting in exotic jungles, beaches, and tall grass fields that become home to the Titanosaurs.
    • Rex in the Rapids – Brace for a T. rex encounter that’s different than anything experienced before with a nail-biting river chase recreated from Michael Crichton’s original Jurassic Park novel.
    • Don’t Look Down – Soar into the Quetzalcoatlus sequence with Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Bechir Sylvain as they train for and shoot their cliff rappelling scenes.
    • Mini-Mart Mayhem – Go inside the heart-stopping third act of Jurassic World Rebirth and witness the process of crafting sets that allow the movie’s mutant dinosaurs to step out of nightmare-inspired designs and stop on an exhilarating rampage.
  • Meet Dolores – Meet the animatronic Aquilops with an extraordinarily lifelike personality.
  • Munched: Becoming Dino Food – Get a victim’s firsthand view inside the frightening jaws of deadly dinosaurs that munch, chomp, and chew their way into creating unforgettable death sequences.
  • A Day at Skywalker Sound – Actress Audrina Miranda guides a personal tour of Skywalker Sound in California to meet the audio editors, foley artists, and mixers who design the movie’s wide array of sounds.
  • Hunting for Easter Eggs – Find out where to look for cleverly hidden Easter eggs that pay homage to everything from the first Jurassic Park film to other Steven Spielberg classics.
  • Gag Reel

The beloved franchise, which has immersed audiences in a world of dinosaurs for over three decades and grossed more than $6.7 billion dollars at the global box office and counting, evolves in an ingenuous new direction with Jurassic World Rebirth. A new era is born.

Jurassic World Rebirth introduces a new world of characters, brought to life by a cast led by action superstar Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow, The Avengers), Jonathan Bailey (Wicked, “Bridgerton”) and two-time Oscar® winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book).

If you squint hard enough, you can see director Gareth Edwards’ feature debut, Monsters, and its sense of scale and wonder nestled in Jurassic World Rebirth. The plots, more or less, are essentially the same, in which humans are hired to retrieve something precious that requires heading into a quarantined zone due to dangerous, behemoth creatures.

In the case of Rebirth, a greedy pharmaceutical company wants to retrieve dino samples for profit, requiring a dangerous mission into an off-limits area that’s been taken over by the most dangerous species and more. The seventh installment of this franchise is at least an improvement over the last, thanks to pared-back simplicity, but it quickly runs out of ideas.

Part of that is due to the way the previous trilogy backed itself into a corner. Jurassic World Rebirth picks up five years after the events of Dominion, quickly erasing the spread of dinosaurs across the globe with the opening reveal that the prehistoric beasts have been dying out in our modern ecosystem. The exception is the oxygen-rich islands near the equator, where dinosaurs are thriving, along with some abandoned genetic experiments.

That’s where the humans come in, with hired merc Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) leading a ragtag crew easily identified as survivors or dino food based on where the needle points on their moral compass. Nervous dino expert Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) and Zora’s trusted right-hand Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) mark themselves with heroic potential early on, while sleazy Big Pharma rep Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend) all but begs for a brutal demise.

Jurassic World Rebirth t-rex
L to R: Luna Blaise and the T-Rex in JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH, directed by Gareth Edwards

The unlucky but wholesome family who sails too close to the quarantine zone only to run afoul of a Mosasaurus and need rescuing from Zora’s crew? Also predictable in fates, of course, though original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp at least wields them to create a separate survival adventure from the scavenger hunt Zora and crew are tasked to accomplish. Both splintered factions encounter a variety of dangerous reptilian enemies and close escapes, but Rebirth designates its nastiest off-screen PG-13 kills for the morally dubious or red shirts.

Edwards is more than capable of delivering stunning set pieces, which is good news considering that Rebirth is essentially just a series of impressive action sequences that showcase the dinosaurs and the great digital effects bringing them to life. Koepp’s script wisely bypasses the heavy-handed callbacks that plagued the previous installments, therefore giving us a reprieve from the velociraptors in favor of focusing on variety instead. Rebirth attempts to make a big deal about its genetic experiments, like the Distortus Rex, but gets too skittish to explore them beyond standard dino attacks. Worse, the glaring product placement gets more attention; it’s all too easy to get distracted here by the prominent showcase of Mars Inc. candy and Dr. Pepper over dinosaurs when there’s no real sense of danger for those not marked as fodder.

Jurassic World Rebirth
The Mosasaurus and Spinosauruses in JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH, directed by Gareth Edwards.

The overt commercialization continues with the dinosaurs themselves, including a new cute little mascot named Dolores, an adorable juvenile Aquilops to be sure, but one so implausibly forced into the proceedings in a way that’s purely designed to sell toys. Rebirth doesn’t really want you to dwell on that, though, but rather just sit back and enjoy the easy, breezy ride. That’s essentially what this sequel is: a safe but fun enough theme park ride.

Rebirth acknowledges that humanity has largely grown bored of dinosaurs and attempts to reset with a pared-back plot meant to remind us why dinosaurs are terrifying. The glaring flaw with that approach is its reluctance to get too scary or intense for the younger viewers who make up the target demo for Jurassic World merch. There’s a great movie buried somewhere beneath the slick, commercialized polish. Enough of it cuts through the artifice to deliver summer escapism fun, but not enough to come close to capturing the awe and intensity of the original that began it all.

Jurassic World Rebirth takes a step in the right direction, but the previous trilogy backed this franchise so thoroughly into a corner that it may be time to let this series go extinct.

Jurassic World Rebirth releases in theaters on July 2, 2025.

A new featurette has been released for Jurassic World Rebirth this afternoon, this one focused entirely on the dinosaurs. Specifically, the approach to making them terrifying again.

Visual effects supervisor/second unit director David Vickery previews in the featurette, “We’re looking for any way that we can to have the hairs on the back of your neck rise.”

Star Scarlett Johansson adds, “That’s what brings the excitement… you are just in a constant state of peril.” Watch the latest Jurassic World Rebirth featurette down below.

The seventh installment in the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise opens in theaters on July 2, 2025, and it’s taking us to the research facility for the original Jurassic Park.

Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) directs a script by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, based on characters created by Michael Crichton.

Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived.

The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.

Scarlett Johansson stars as skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery.

The worst of the worst dinosaurs were left on an island from Tyrannosaurus and Mosasaurus to the mutant Distortus Rex and they’re all attacking in the second trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth.

From executive producer Steven Spielberg, a new era is born when the seventh installment in the Jurassic franchise opens on July 2 via Universal.

Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) directs from a script by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, based on characters created by Michael Crichton.

The cast also includes Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Audrina Miranda as Reuben’s family and Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein as members of Zora and Krebs’ crews.

The writer of the original Jurassic Park, David Koepp, is headed back to the world of dinosaurs to pen the next installment of the Jurassic World franchise. While the new installment recently hit a roadblock, THR reports that the project has finally found its new director in Gareth Edwards (2014’s Godzilla, The Creator).

The outlet reports that Edwards is in talks to helm the feature that was briefly set to be directed by Bullet Train filmmaker David Leitch.

Universal and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners have set a theatrical release date for the new Jurassic World movie: July 2, 2025.

The new movie is expected to be completely fresh take on a Jurassic era with Jurassic World cast members Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard not expected to return. Don’t expect the original trilogy’s Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neill, either. The new Jurassic World is expected to take the franchise in a new direction, with plot details under wraps.

Gareth Edwards is no stranger to big budget productions or large-scaled monster movies. The filmmaker broke out with 2010’s Kaiju-centric Monsters before taking on Godzilla in 2014. Edwards also is no stranger to effects-heavy sci-fi features, from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to last year’s The Creator.

The next Jurassic World film will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Entertainment. Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley will produce and David Leitch and Kelly McCormick will also produce through 87North. Executive Vice President of Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Jacqueline Garell will oversee the project for the Studio.

This news comes in the wake of Jurassic WorldJurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World: Dominion, a trilogy of sequels to the original classic that concluded in 2022. The last entry, Jurassic World: Dominion, brought in a billion dollars at the global box-office, all but ensuring Universal would want to continue this franchise.

The franchise will also return with “Jurassic World: Chaos Theory” later this year, an animated series from Netflix set in the world of “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.”

20th Century Studios, New Regency and Entertainment One are giving fans the chance to see sci-fi action thriller The Creator on IMAX, from director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla), one month early, ahead of its theatrical release on September 29.

Edwards will participate in THE CREATOR: IMAX® LIVE EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK on Tuesday, August 29 at 5:00 pm PT/8:00 pm ET.

The sneak peek fan event will take place at the AMC Century City IMAX Theatre and feature exclusive footage from the upcoming sci-fi action thriller and an interactive live Q&A with Edwards.

The exclusive screening event will take place at 10 participating IMAX theatres in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Toronto, Seattle, Washington D.C., and San Francisco, and all attendees will receive a commemorative lanyard and mini poster from the film. Tickets for the sneak peek are available on a first-come, first-served basis here.

The Creator seems like the perfect movie to see in IMAX, but if you’re not near any of the 10 cities included (like me), fret not: the release is just over a month away.

The film stars John David Washington (Tenet), Gemma Chan (Eternals), Ken Watanabe (Inception), Sturgill Simpson (Dog), newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles and Academy Award® winner Allison Janney (I, Tonya).

In The Creator, “Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself.

“Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.”

The film’s screenplay is by Gareth Edwards and Chris Weitz, from a story by Edwards. The producers are Gareth Edwards, p.g.a., Kiri Hart, Jim Spencer, p.g.a. and Arnon Milchan.

Before taking the reigns on Rogue One, Monsters director Gareth Edwards gave birth to the newest Godzilla universe that’s smashing its way to an apex in November’s Godzilla vs. Kong.

Last night, Edwards took over the official Godzilla Twitter account for a special viewing party in which he commented on the entire film several years after its release.

While there’s a ton of interesting bits, including this gem in which he reveals a cut scene in which Aaron Taylor-Johnson‘s Ford falls asleep watching classic Toho movies, the coolest share was that of a gruesome effect from a deleted sequence involving dead miners.

Check out the previously unseen makeup below…

If you missed the fun, next week they’ll be live-tweeting Kong: Skull Island.

British sci-fi horror film Monsters is being turned into a television series by Vertigo Films for UK broadcaster Channel 4, Deadline reports. The feature was the directorial debut of Star Wars spin-off Rogue One and Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards.

The film, which was released in 2010 via Vertigo and Magnet Releasing in the U.S., follows an American photojournalist, played by Scoot McNairy, who is tasked with escorting his employer’s daughter, played by Whitney Able, back to the U.S by crossing an infected zone full of creatures in Mexico.

Edwards is likely to be involved behind the scenes with his full involvement determined when the project has been fully greenlit.

Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett will act as showrunner with up-and-coming British writers Daniel Fajemisin-Duncan and Marlon Smith writing. It is currently in development with Channel 4 in the UK, via head of international drama Simon Maxwell, and the producers are looking to secure a major U.S. partner and is in talks with broadcasters and SVOD services including Netflix and Amazon. C4 hopes that the big-budget drama will follow a similar path as its Philip K. Dick adaptation “Electric Dreams”, which is set to launch on Amazon, and Kudos sci-fi thriller “Humans”, which is a co-pro with AMC.

Did you know there’s a new Star Wars movie coming out this weekend?!

Look. The truth is, I know next to nothing about the Star Wars franchise/universe/whatever you want to call it. I’ve seen bits and pieces of all the films, and I absolutely loved The Force Awakens, but I’m not and have never been big into that whole world. Nevertheless, I will be seeing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Because I like good movies. And it looks like a damn good movie.

Now that that’s out of the way.

One of the reasons I’m excited about Rogue One is that it was directed by Gareth Edwards, who made a splash with the indie film Monsters and went on to direct the 2014 version of Godzilla. As Edwards recently revealed, there will a nice little visual tribute to both Monsters and Godzilla in Rogue One, and we’ve just learned that the film will also pay homage to 1979’s Alien.

As reported by Fandango, there’s a brand new planet in Rogue One called Eadu, and the visual landscape was directly inspired by LV-426 in Ridley Scott’s seminal sci-fi/horror flick.

Edwards explained:

Films that I used in there that got high score were Apocalypse Now, a little of Thin Red Line, and there’s a planet in our film that’s very much inspired by Alien. Also Blade Runner, THX-1138 and of course the original Star Wars.

You can see Planet Eadu below, with a screen-grab from Alien underneath it.

As if you needed another reason to be excited about Rogue One.

Prior to directing this month’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, director Gareth Edwards spent the majority of his career playing with monsters. His first feature, titled Monsters, was released in 2010, and it helped land him the gig directing the 2014 version of Godzilla. But will there be monsters in Rogue One? Actually yes, there will be. And they’ll be very familiar looking

Speaking with The Star Wars Show, Edwards just revealed that there are fun Easter egg tributes to both Monsters and Godzilla in Rogue One!

He explains where you’ll find the homages:

There’s some Easter eggs in Saw’s cave. There’s some cave paintings. One of them is of the creatures that were in my first film, called Monsters. And I think there’s some MUTOs and Godzilla painted somewhere in there. I didn’t ask for it. They did it as a joke. I came in one day and spotted it… during the middle of a take.

Keep those eyes peeled on December 16th, Star Wars fans!

We now have the official second trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, in which Jyn Erso leads a group of unlikely heroes to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction!

The biggest reveal, however, is that of Darth Vader, who is now 100% confirmed to appear in the film that ties directly to George Lucas’ seminal 1977 Star Wars.

Oh yeah, and check out this stunner of a poster!

Jyn Erso, a Rebellion soldier and criminal, is about to experience her biggest challenge yet when Mon Mothma sets her out on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. With the aid of the Rebels, a master swordsman, and non-allied forces, Jyn will be in for something bigger than she thinks.

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and starring Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, and with James Earl Jones returning as the voice of Darth Vader, Rogue One soars into theaters on December 16th.

It’s been confirmed that Gareth Edwards will no longer be directing Godzilla 2, according to Deadline. The site states that the split with Legendary Entertainment was an amicable one.

Edwards has just got off directing Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and apparently has his own project that he wants to pursue, which is on a much smaller scale than the likes of both Godzilla and Star Wars. Currently, no director has taken his place but we’ll be keeping our eyes and ears open for any news.

Godzilla 2 has a release date of March 22nd, 2019 and it will be the precursor to Godzilla vs Kong, which will be coming over a year later on May 20th, 2020.

The latest (full) teaser trailer for Disney and Lucasfilm’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is here, and it’s pretty great.

In theaters December 16th, 2016, Rebels are set out on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. The set up is pretty great and adds an entirely new dimension to the first Star Wars. I also love the homage to Ridley Scott’s Alien in the trailer’s score!

Pictured at the bottom are Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Felicity Jones, Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen in Rogue One, which is directed by Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards.

Ben Mendelsohn, Jiang Wen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, and Forest Whitaker also star.

The filmmakers have assembled a stellar cast, including Felicity Jones, nominated for an Academy Award for her leading role in “The Theory of Everything”; Diego Luna, who was featured in 2008’s Oscar-winning “Milk” and the critically acclaimed “Killing Them Softly”; Ben Mendelsohn, recently nominated for an Emmy for his leading role in “Bloodline” and co-starring in the upcoming “Mississippi Grind”; Donnie Yen, Hong Kong action star and martial artist who starred in “Ip Man” and “Blade II”; Jiang Wen, who co-wrote, produced , directed and starred in the award-winning “Let the Bullets Fly” and “Devils on the Doorstep”; Forest Whitaker, recently featured in the critically-acclaimed Lee Daniels’ “The Butler” and winner of an Academy Award® for his leading role in 2006’s “The Last King of Scotland; Mads Mikkelsen, who starred in “The Hunt” and was the memorable villain from 2006’s “Casino Royale”; Alan Tudyk, who plays a performance-capture character in “Rogue One,” stars in the soon-to-be-released “Con Man” series and “Trumbo,” which releases this November; and Riz Ahmed, who was recently featured in “Nightcrawler” and starred in the BAFTA-winning film “Four Lions.”

Veteran ILM visual effects supervisor John Knoll, who shares a long history with the Star Wars movies, dating back to the mid-1990s, originated the idea for the movie. Allison Shearmur (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” “Cinderella”), John Knoll, Simon Emanuel (“The Dark Knight Rises,” “Fast & Furious 6”) and Jason McGatlin (“Tintin,” “War of the Worlds”) are executive producers. Kiri Hart and John Swartz (“Star Wars: The Force Awakens”) are co-producers.

To create the lived-in, realistic feel of “Rogue One,” Edwards chose Greig Fraser (“Zero Dark Thirty,” “Foxcatcher”) to be his director of photography and Neil Corbould (“Black Hawk Down,” “Gladiator,” “Saving Private Ryan”) to be his special effects supervisor. Star Wars and Lucasfilm veteran Doug Chiang (“Star Wars: Episodes I-II,” “Forrest Gump”) and Neil Lamont (supervising art director for the “Harry Potter” series, “Edge of Tomorrow”) will be the production designers. Additional crew members will include stunt coordinator Rob Inch (“World War Z,” Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”), creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan (“Prometheus”) and co-costume designers Dave Crossman (costume supervisor for the “Harry Potter” series, “Saving Private Ryan”) and Glyn Dillon (costume concept artist for “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” “Jupiter Ascending”).

Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy previously stated. “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for Rogue One.”

The D23 Expo is lighting up Saturday afternoon with a barrage of huge reveals.

In addition to revealing the first poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the initial bit of breaking news is that Jurassic World‘s Colin Trevorrow is officially directing Star Wars: Episode IX, which is slated for release in 2019. No writer has been named.

While production won’t begin for a few years, Trevorrow is heading to Lucasfilm this year to begin working with artists and his fellow Star Wars directors.

“Colin is someone I’ve been interested in working with ever since I saw Safety Not Guaranteed,” says Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. “The power of that film paired with the enormous success of Jurassic World speaks volumes about his abilities both as a storyteller and skilled filmmaker. We are thrilled to have such an incredible talent as Colin join our family and step into the Star Wars universe.”

“This is not a job or an assignment,” added Trevorrow. “It is a seat at a campfire, surrounded by an extraordinary group of storytellers, filmmakers, artists and craftspeople. We’ve been charged with telling new stories for a younger generation because they deserve what we all had—a mythology to call their own. We will do this by channeling something George Lucas instilled in all of us: boundless creativity, pure invention and hope.”

Star Wars: Episode IX will conclude the third trilogy of Star Wars movies that begins with Star Wars: The Force Awakens on December 18, 2015.

But wait, there’s more!

In addition, Disney and Lucasfilm released the first cast photo from the now-filming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story!

Pictured are Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Felicity Jones, Jiang Wen and Donnie Yen in Rogue One, which is directed by Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards.

In theaters December 16th, 2016, Rebels set out on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star.

Additional crew members will include stunt coordinator Rob Inch (“World War Z,” Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”), creature effects supervisor Neal Scanlan (“Prometheus”) and co-costume designers Dave Crossman (costume supervisor for the “Harry Potter” series, “Saving Private Ryan”) and Glyn Dillon (costume concept artist for “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” “Jupiter Ascending”).

Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” said Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy.

When I don’t like something, I make it known, and sometimes I even go as far as to beat a dead horse.

Sometimes that rubs you guys the wrong way, I know, but if I didn’t stand by my convictions then how would I be able to stand behind something that I love with the same impact?

With that said, Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Godzilla was bad. No, no, it wasn’t just bad, it was terrible.

I have shared many reasons why I don’t like the movie – the biggest issue being that the characters don’t actually interact with Godzilla or MUTO. While that’s just the icing on the proverbial cake, there’s a lot of character missteps that also impacted the emotional content of the Gareth Edwards-directed film.

Don’t believe me? Even star Bryan Cranston took issue with the way his character was treated. If the main star of the film is vocalizing his disdain, clearly there were some behind-the-scenes issues that many of us weren’t aware of. With the movie being a resounding success, and a sequel in development, Cranston must really have been frustrated to rain on the parade.

Here’s what Cranston told the Nerdist Podcast:

“That character dying at that time was a mistake. I knew it when I read it. When I read it I said, ‘Oh, page 50 this character who was the emotional core at the center, that was guiding the audience in the story up to that point – he dies?’ What a waste.

They kind of dealt with it poorly, that’s my only criticism of it because I think it was a fun movie, it was a very successful movie. I told them that even if I wasn’t doing this role, that character shouldn’t die at that point. It’s just bad narrative, but they were too far down the road. I was the last guy hired because I was still shooting Breaking Bad and they kept pushing because ‘Breaking Bad’ kept pushing. Finally, I was able to get in and do it.”

He gets even more detailed in his dig on the filmmakers’ decision:

“That character should have been with his son and they would’ve started to bond a little bit more and they went on this journey together to go back home and be reintroduced to his grandson. Just when they’re bonding and it looks like they could have a relationship, the father sacrifices himself to save his son. And that’s the way he should have died.”

The filmmakers behind Godzilla must have thought they were pulling a Scream by killing off so many characters early on in the film, but all they were doing was pulling the rug out from under viewers, and leaving Godzilla callow and soulless.

Still, Godzilla was visually stunning, and I can only hope lessons were learned by the monstrosity of a film. If you can’t learn and get better as a filmmaker, you’ll continually fail the people who need you the most: the audience.

Edwards is currently at work on Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, where I hope he had a stronger screenplay to work from. Once completed he’ll be back at work on a sequel to Godzilla, which hopefully gets it right this time around.

One of my biggest complaints with Gareth Edwards’ 2014 take on Godzilla was that it felt very small. I know that seems crazy, considering that it’s a movie about gigantic monsters beating the unholy shit out of each other, but it really felt compressed and confined to me. The scenes with the kaiju were few and far between and we never got up close and personal with the monsters, instead staying with the humans as they remained far, far away from any real danger.

However, scriptwriter Max Borenstein, who wrote the 2014 film, is promising that the sequel will be “bigger and better”, especially now that the modern world of Godzilla has been created.

Borenstein spoke with Collider, who told them:

I’m writing it now, and it’s really going to be great. I don’t want to go off book and tell you anything that I’m not allowed to tell you. The response to the first film was really exciting, but now that that world is established, we can do bigger and even better things. We’re really stoked.

We’ll be seeing Godzilla towering over humanity once again in 2018. Gareth Edwards is set to direct. It’s unsure if Aaron Taylor-Johnson will be reprising his role as Ford Brody.

We’ve got our hands on some rather incredible news regarding the upcoming stand-alone film Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One, which takes place before the events of A New Hope and follows a crew of rebels on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star.

Yesterday, we posted that Darth Vader would be returning as one of the villains in the film but now we have some additional information on other villains that will be entering the fray!

Our source has shared this incredible and exclusive information with us:

Ben Mendelsohn’s new Moff character is indeed the big baddie of Rogue One. The other main villains of the piece are bounty hunters hired by the Moff to quietly retrieve the stolen Death Star plans at all costs. Vader factors in once he realizes that the plans have been stolen, so he joins the hunt in a supporting role and is none too pleased.

These bounty hunters include Boba Fett, Bossk, Dengar, Zuckuss & 4LOM, IG-88, and Cad Bane, who is from ‘Clone Wars’ and is making his live action debut.

There might some new ones as well, but that’s the core group. So Fett will absolutely appear on screen again in a semi-main role before his solo film.

Our source also tells us that there have been thoughts of adding a Wookie bounty hunter to the group, although that has yet to be confirmed.

Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One is being directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) based on a script by Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz. As well as Mendelsohn, the film stars Felicity Jones and Diego Luna. It is scheduled to be released on December 16th, 2016.

Alright Star Wars fans, who’s excited by these details? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!

The now-filming(!) Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One has managed to keep the majority of its details quiet over the past few months, but it looks like that is about to change.  Today was already Star Wars crazy enough, given the announcement that the second Star Wars Anthology entry will be a young Han Solo film and directed by Phil Lord & Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie) for a May 2018 release.  We thought that would be the peak of Star Wars news today.  We were wrong.

Birth.Movies.Death is claiming that Ben Mendelsohn’s new Moff character isn’t the only baddie menacing Felicity Jones & Co. in Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One next year: Darth Vader will be too!  While they go on to state that they aren’t sure how much Vader will be in the film and in what capacity, our own sources have painted a larger picture.

We all know that the central idea is that the film is set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, with a group of rebels stealing the plans for the Death Star and making off across the galaxy to deliver them to their superiors.  The “Rogue One” of the title is the name of their mission.  In pursuit is Mendelsohn’s Moff and his imperial cronies. That’s the vague set-up we’ve been given to date.

According to our own sources, Vader enters the fray when he learns that the plans have been stolen and is none too pleased about this.  While we should not expect everyone’s favorite, Force-choke happy Darth to be a main role in the film, it does sound like this will be more than a cameo.  Given that he recently participated on the animated series set during this same gap, “Star Wars: Rebels”, I think it is safe to assume that James Earl Jones will be back to voice Lord Vader.  Rumors still persist that WWE superstar Seamus has been cast as Vader in the suit, but no confirmation has been made at this time.

With filming underway, San Diego Comic-Con later in the week, and D23 creeping up next month, we should expect to hear a lot more about Rogue One in the coming weeks, both in terms of cast and story.

VaderChoke

Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One is set to hits theaters on December 16, 2016.  Directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) and written by John Knoll, Gary Whitta, and Chris Weitz, the film stars Felicity Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Sam Claflin, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, and Forest Whitaker.

Last we heard about Monsters: Dark Continent an April release date was announced. Now we’ve got the specifics: on April 17th the massive-looking sequel for Garth Edwards’ feature debut Monsters will be unleashed.

This time Tom Green (UK show Misfits) will be directing, with Edwards acting as executive producer. From what we’ve seen in the trailer, the tone of Dark Continent looks really interesting, with a tale of soldiers taking on giant monsters in the Middle East. It’s going to be a tough act to juggle but so far it looks pretty awesome.

Ten years on from the events of Monsters, and the ‘Infected Zones’ have spread worldwide.

Two soldiers embark on a life-altering mission through the dark heart of monster territory in the deserts of the Middle East. By the time they reach their goal, they will have been forced to confront the fear that the true monsters on the planet may not be alien after all.

Big Star Wars news coming out of Disney and Lucasfilm’s annual shareholder pow-wow. Variety reports that:

Rian Johnson has also been confirmed to write and direct the as yet untitled Star Wars: Episode VIII, which will hit theaters May 26, 2017.

Gareth Edwards upcoming standalone film, starring Felicity Jones, will be called Rogue One. The movie starts filming in London this summer and opens Dec. 16, 2016.

“Rogue One” is the call-sign of Rogue leader, the commander of Rogue Squadron. In the original trilogy, Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles both held these titles at one time. There have been a ton of them in the Expanded Universe, including Han and Leia’s daughter Jaina Solo and one of my favorite characters Corran Horn (I, Jedi is still one of my favorite EU books). Since Disney is conveniently pretending the EU doesn’t exist, I’d bank on a brand new character being leader in Rogue One, but I’d flip my shit if they brought Corran Horn to life.

The idea of a standalone Star Wars film centering on Rogue Squadron sounds awesome though and suggests some large scale dogfights and an epic scale. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Edwards’ Godzilla, but hopefully he goes big without forgetting about the human angle.

What’s fun about this date is that Legendary’s King Kong prequel, Skull Island, opens in 2016, which could be tied into the franchise and eventually lead to both Kong and Godzilla facing off.

This summer’s Godzilla, which starred Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston, recently joined the $500M club.

Gareth Edwards is confirmed to direct and will get back to business after he completes Star Wars. Thus, don’t expect this to happen for a few years from now. That gives them a lot of time to figure out how to do it correctly (note to filmmakers: watch Jurassic Park).

Fresh off the success of Godzilla, filmmaker Gareth Edwards has lined up his next project, something set in a galaxy far, far away.

Heat Vision reports that Edwards is attached to direct one of the Star Wars spinoff films!

Due to the high level of secrecy surrounding the Star Wars development process, it is unclear which spinoff Edwards will tackle.

Explains the site, speculation has focused on characters such as bounty hunter Boba Fett and Jedi master Yoda as those who might be getting their own movies. There are also rumors of a potential Han Solo origin story or at least something on the Solo clan, and untold adventures of Luke Skywalker.

Disney CEO Bob Iger stated earlier this month that there was a plan to make at least three spinoff movies that would be released in between the main installments.

Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are allegedly writing and producing the spinoffs.

J.J. Abrams is currently filming Star Wars: Episode VII in Abu Dhabi.

The film is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.

One of my favorite ongoing Late Night segments is “Jimmy Kimmel Live’s” hilarious ‘Lie Witness News’.

Last night, they took to Hollywood Blvd and asked people this question: “Considering Godzilla is based on the true story of the giant lizard attack on Tokyo that killed more than 100,000 people in 1954, do you think it is wrong that Hollywood glamorizes this event for entertainment?

It’s incredible that some people actually respond as if Godzilla really attacked Japan, and what awaits you below is guaranteed to brighten up your day! Let’s just hope Godzilla never attacks the United States…

A story so obvious even Godzilla himself would scoff (some blue fire).

After opening to $103M internationally — the biggest opening of 2014 so far — and grossing $93M domestic stateside this weekend, it should come as no surprise that Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.‘ are already developing a sequel to the monster hit Godzilla, Deadline deduces. They allegedly confirmed the news this morning.

It caused chaos here on Bloody Disgusting when Evan shared his mixed thoughts on the Gareth Edwards-directed revamp, and if you follow me on Twitter, you saw me go on a tirade about how disappointed I was – but that doesn’t mean we don’t want to see more of destructions from the “King of the Monsters.”

In all honesty, I’m desperate for them to give it another go as I suspect this was an enormous (pun intended) learning curve for Edwards, who has previously directed the micro-indie Monsters. Now that the writers/producers and director have realized what a modern Godzilla movie will look like, and learned what not to do with the screenplay, I can only expect greatness when Godzilla returns to battle in the near future.

What would I like to see from the sequel? Well, for those of you who saw Godzilla, Edwards makes various references to Steven Spielberg’s work from Jaws to Jurassic Park. And, while everyone points to the obvious character development issues, my biggest complaint is that the actors and chaos never co-exist. If you look at Jurassic Park, for example, the characters are constantly in danger and immersed in battle (from a Tyrannosaurus rex stomping on a Jeep filled with children to a Jeep falling out of a tree. Then you have the T-rex chasing down another Jeep not to mention the magnificent electric fence set piece in which suspense builds as the power to JP is about to be turned back on). Frankly, I want to see the characters in real danger because of Godzilla and his foe(s) – not standing miles and miles away watching from a television set.

Now that I’ve had my say, tell us what you want from the sequel below. Then talk about the film in theaters now by clicking here.

Being that this is the biggest horror-esque film in quite some time, we thought it would be fun to get a dialogue going and see what you guys thought.

Is Godzilla still the “King of the Monsters”?

Bookmark this page, go check it out this weekend, and then return here to tell us what you thought. There’s quite a bit to chat about, and I suspect it’s going to split audiences.

One thing I’m curious to hear is where you stack Godzilla up against films like Pacific Rim, Cloverfield and even the previous 1998 Godzilla?

The new film is the story of human courage and reconciliation in the face of titanic forces of nature, when the awe-inspiring Godzilla rises to restore balance as humanity stands defenseless.

With Godzilla opening in theaters tonight, Protagonist Pictures released the first trailer to the sequel to Gareth Edwards’ hit indie, Monsters.

Tom Green took over directorial duties for Edwards, with Joe Dempsie, Johnny Harris and Sofia Boutella starring in Monsters: Dark Continent.

If you thought the first featured a lot of mega-sized monsters, this time it looks like they actually do something. Monsters annoyed me because it felt like the creatures never truly interacted with the humans, while Dark Continent, well, watch the trailer and see!!

Watch for it in the UK this September. Expecting Magnolia to pick up U.S. rights again.

If you’re planning on wasting your money checking out the IMAX version of Godzilla this weekend (there’s no reason to spend the extra cash, see it in 2-D), you’ll be treated to a different “countdown” than you’re used to. Instead, Godzilla’s score and roar will blast your eardrums. We’ve added that below as well as two absolutely stunning new looks at King Lizard.

The film stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Sally Hawkins, David Strathairn, Juliette Binoche, and Bryan Cranston.

From visionary new director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) comes a powerful story of human courage and reconciliation in the face of titanic forces of nature, when the awe-inspiring Godzilla rises to restore balance as humanity stands defenseless.

Check out Evan’s early review. I’ll be chiming in with my thoughts this weekend.

A few days back a good number of readers took issue with my review of Godzilla, which was the kind of thing I would have hoped they would do after they had actually seen the movie. I stand by my review, but I want to point out one thing – it was mixed down the middle. The 2.5 out of 5 score was very deliberately meant to indicate that there was still just as much to like (for me) as there was to dislike.

In the comments, I was asked how this film compares with last year’s Pacific Rim. Good question. Both are giant Kaiju movies. Both are Legendary/Warner Bros. films. And both get a lot right. Mainly, they get their Kaiju right. As I noted in my Godzilla review, the new movie’s treatment of the big guy is fantastic. Not only are his scale and appearance imposing and powerful, but there’s a lot of strong character work going on in the pixels that animate him. You get what his objectives are and you can even understand his battle plan. Gareth Edwards does such a good job of getting you on his side that there are several moments during the end battle that will make you want to stand up and cheer, regardless of your feelings on the rest of the movie.

Edwards also does a fantastic job of setting Godzilla himself up. Seen only in fits and starts, from a series of fins protruding from the water to brief full body glimpses, he retains a satisfying sense of mystery up until the end. There, the film goes whole hog on the full body shots as Godzilla and one of the MUTOs wage war in San Francisco. Godzilla might wear you out with its human characters, but there’s no monster or battle fatigue.
PACIFIC RIM

Pacific Rim, on the other hand, wears you down a bit on both fronts. I believe that Rim would benefit from perhaps one less robot on Kaiju battle scene, just as I believe that the film suffers from a huge missed opportunity when it comes to developing its concept of “the drift.” The final version of the film explores surprisingly little in the way of character possibilities offered up by that conceit. It’s the perfect scenario to make the chances of overcoming external obstacles contingent upon the triumph over internal obstacles. There’s a little bit of that with Rinko Kikuchi’s character, but the movie could have gone full (as a friend once suggested) Strictly Ballroom here, with Hunnam and Kikuchi learning to work together – to dance – in a way that fuels their ultimate romantic entanglement.

While Pacific Rim has hugely broad characters, they almost sort of fit in with the old fashioned innocence of the film. It feels like Guillermo del Toro engineered the movie as something of a futuristic riff on those old WW2 propaganda reels, so the broadness feels earned (even if I personally find some of it grating). The characters in Godzilla are broad in a different way – they’re ciphers. There’s nothing cartoonish or exaggerated about them, which puts them miles away from the Pacific Rim universe. They are fairly bland. However, if the intent was to reduce their function to POV access points, they get the job done superbly. Since much of Godzilla is built around a slow, Jaws-like reveal, it helps to have plenty of different characters on the ground who can gape at his majesty without giving away the money shot every 5 minutes.

Pacific Rim boasts a higher quantity of Kaiju with varying designs and sizes. Its beautiful rainswept neon environment keeps them at arm’s length from our current reality. The destruction brought upon us by Godzilla and the battling MUTO’s feels much more recognizable, the terror more relatable. As I’ve said before – the monster stuff in Godzilla is fantastic. The set pieces are alternately suspenseful and grand and they don’t overdo it. The only fatigue you’ll feel from this movie is from the half-baked exposition that threatens to destroy all of the human scenes.

As far as preferences go, I’d have to see Godzilla again before I decided. While my review demonstrates a degree of disappointment, there’s enough praise coming from people I respect to warrant a second look. As it stands now, Pacific Rim beats it out for me as a movie – but the character of Godzilla himself is better than any single element of GDT’s film.

Maybe it comes down to this. If you like your Kaijus as beautifully anonymous cannon fodder, Pacific Rim wins. If you want them to be characters you can root for, Godzilla stands triumphant. Either way, if you like big lizards, you’ll probably be fine.

It’s only a couple more days until the world is rocked once again by one of cinema’s most recognizable monsters, Godzilla. The film has drawn mostly positive reviews, although our own Evan Dickson wanted a little more from the film (see his review).

To create a true feeling of grand destruction and suspense, director Gareth Edwards got famed composer Alexandre Desplat to bring a score that would suit the massive beast. This soundtrack was released yesterday and previews of every track are available through Amazon, although I have to warn you that the track titles are super spoiler-y.

Listening to the music, it’s clear that Desplat fully incorporated the slightly cheesy aspect of the original scores while creating something bombastic and thrilling. Highly worth checking out!

Head below for a trailer.

The real bummer about not loving the new Godzilla movie is that I liked the character of Godzilla. More specifically, I liked this version of him quite a bit. I’ve never really fallen in love with the franchise (nor have I seen every single installment), but I was pretty taken with this iteration of the big guy. Not only did I care about what happened to him, but I was impressed with the decisions he made during the battles (director Gareth Edwards does a great job of defining the character through action here). I just wish there was a better movie around him.

And it pretty much comes down to one fatal flaw. Gareth Edwards’ direction is never less than decent and often borders on being truly impressive and the cast is fantastic (though Bryan Cranston is turned up to 11 throughout all of his scenes, sometimes uncomfortably so). But the script (credited to Max Borenstein but frankensteined together by around half a dozen writers) is painful. I mean that almost literally. Throughout the bulk of the film’s running time I was shifting in my seat, sort of aghast at some of the decisions (or non-decisions) that were being made.

These choices squander the impressive array of talent on display. Ken Watanabe is made to wander through the film wide eyed and seemingly drunk, spouting theories about the battling monsters to an audience of befuddled military brass. Even though his character is responsible for 15 years worth of ill-advised experiments that helped cause these issues in the first place. Still, the military (and this is primarily a movie about military response) has more reason to keep him around than they do Aaron Johnson’s character, the only thing they know about him is that he’s the trespassing son of an ex-scientist and that he’s a bomb defuser. The movie does an okay job of making these contrivances work in the moment (after all we need Johnson’s POV for the film to work), but the stitches around them are always threatening to buckle. There’s also at least one or two gung-ho dialogue exchanges that are right out of Starship Troopers, which is puzzling since that film is a military satire.

There isn’t a single interesting decision made by any of the characters (save for Godzilla himself). The intentions of the filmmakers and the studio seem (mostly) in the right place, so why not use this fertile ground to do something other than the bare minimum when it comes to getting from point A to point B? I have to wonder if the original script contained at least a few idiosyncrasies, a couple of unexpected character beats, that were sanded off for whatever reason. Frank Darabont was hired to do a pass on the script in January 2013, a mere two months before shooting began in March of that year. I’m not sure if he was the last writer on this but, at that point in the production schedule on a huge project, they aren’t bringing writers on to innovate so much as they are to fix things. Alas, it’s impossible to tell from one viewing if any of his contributions were used. The whole thing is so vanilla it’s inscrutable.

There’s also a tonal issue and it will be interesting to see how audiences respond to it. The trailers for Godzilla sell an intense, beautiful and atmospheric film. And while the actual movie at hand has plenty in the way of suspenseful set pieces and impressive monster on monster battles, it’s also improbably goofy. So much so that I almost feel that the marketing for the film is a bit of a bait and switch. This isn’t a bad thing in and of itself, but Godzilla seems trapped at the halfway point. It should either lean into or away from these inclinations, but it does neither. The result is a mildly diverting mixed bag of a film that only really picks up once we get to the final battle (and an admittedly inspired sequence on a train trestle).

Godzilla still pegs Gareth Edwards as a talent to watch, indicting the practice of setting a release date before finishing a script more than it does any of the creatives involved. While I don’t think this movie suffers from the total wrongheadedness of Roland Emmerich’s 1998 take on the material, it’s likely to be discarded just as quickly. Perhaps even faster. After all, we’re still talking about how bad that film was. This one might just be forgotten.
