Mixing Doom and a remake of the original Fallout? That’s what developer Alexander “Red888guns” Berezin is doing with Fallout: Bakersfield, a non-commercial total conversion for Doom that just had a new trailer drop, showing off the 1997 classic from an up close and personal perspective. Originally revealed three years ago, Berezin has stressed that this project is not to generate financial profit of any kind for its creators, but if you’d like to send a tip their way, you can do so through Boosty.

Unlike its turned-based inspiration, Fallout: Bakersfield is instead an FPS campaign built in the GZDoom Engine. What’s more, Berezin has gone the extra mile to recreate that grungy look and feel of the original Fallout games, which sadly has been missing from the Bethesda-helmed entries since Fallout 3. The interface alone is a thing of beauty, feeling like it was ripped right from the first Fallout.

From the trailer, Fallout: Bakersfield takes place in the Necropolis area of the original Fallout, which means there are plenty of ghouls for you to gun down. In fact, the game appears to be a retelling of the series of events from the original game, which includes you facing off against the super mutant Harry, the leader of the super mutants in Necropolis.

Berezin states at the end of the trailer that the mod itself is around 60% complete, and while no release date has been announced for the mod, a “??/??/202?” date can be seen at the end.

Thanks to PCGamer for the heads up.

Leave it to fans to create new experiences with beloved games. We already have fan games like Bloodborne PSX (and the upcoming Bloodborne Kart), and now you can add Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 to the list. This time, however, instead of a demake, Resident Evil 4 has been reworked into a 2D shooter that screams of classic Run n’ Guns like Metal Slug.

Powered by GZDoom (the same port of the Doom Engine that powers several unique fanmade games), DooMero‘s Resident Evil 4 2D Edition takes RE4, and has Leon mowing down waves of Ganados on a horizontal plane while picking up items and weapons in a game that hearkens back to SNK’s beloved shooter series.

Resident Evil 4 2D Edition has actually been in the works for a while now. Over on the Doomworld forums (thanks, IGN), DooMero stated that they first started working on this mod back in 2016, but had shelved it. That obviously changed once Capcom dropped the remake of Resident Evil 4.

The mod still isn’t done, but DooMero has posted several videos showing the mod’s progress, including news that we’ll eventually get a demo. As for what the demo entails, DooMero doesn’t want to spoil the final boss, but will instead “include a file in one of the houses of the village for select [sic] what boss you want to confront at the end of the demo.”

Thanks to PCGamesN for spotting this.

Some of you might be disappointed with the recent re-release of LucasArts’ classic Zombies Ate My Neighbors to consoles and PC. The offerings lean towards the, well, lean side of re-releases.

If you’re in that camp, you can always lean (why I’m using this word again, I don’t know) on Doom to provide your fix. Specifically, Dude27th’s Total Conversion of Zombies Ate My Neighbors for Doom II. The TC is still very much in progress, but as you’ll see from the various videos on the modder’s YouTube page, there’s plenty of excitement.

It’s not just a straight-up reskinning, either. Dude27th is working to recreate the weapons (namely, things that aren’t in Doom II like the soda cans and crucifixes), items, enemies, and of course, co-op! At the moment, the TC is up to level 7, but there’s still plenty to enjoy.

To get this puppy going, all you’ll need is a copy of Doom II and GZDoom.

Thanks to PCGamer for the heads up.

So, you want to get your Inglourious Basterds on, but you also want some flair added to your classic Wolfenstein 3D? The team behind the latest standalone game inspired by Wolf3D in Blade of Agony has you covered.

Lead by Daniel “Tormentor667” Gimmer, Blade of Agony is described as a story-driven FPS “inspired by WWII shooters from the 90’s and early 2000’s”, but with faster-paced gameplay in the spirit of Doom.

You once again take on the role of Cpt. William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, only this time, B.J. has retired from active duty. But, as these things go, you’re itching for action, and it just so happens that Cpt. Douglas Blake is calling you back to duty. It seems Hitler has become a little too obsessed with human experiments and occult artifacts, and as a result, might have something in store for the Allies.

Far from a simple mod, Blade of Agony sports several modern improvements, thanks to the GZDoom engine:

  • 30 playable and unique levels in 3 different chapters (plus secret maps)
  • Orchestra-quality game music
  • Voice acting and ambient soundscapes
  • A combination of low-poly models and hi-resolution sprite assets to create the perfect retro feeling
  • Devastating armaments from the battlefields of WWII
  • Interactive NPCs that support the twisted plot’s progress and help you understand the game
  • Improved enemy AI for more dynamic and challenging fights
  • Beautiful special effects (weather, elements, explosions, etc.)
  • Modern post-processing shaders (motion & effect blur, noise, flares, etc.)

Best of all, you don’t need the original Wolfenstein 3D to enjoy this one. Simply head on over to the official site, download it, and away you go.

Originally announced in 2017 and released in the same year, Castlevania: Simon’s Destiny has only now finally been finished, and recreates the entire NES classic within the first-person perspective of Doom.

Modder Batandy (who also did that cool P.T. remake in GZDoom) states that Simon’s Destiny is a “game born as a love letter to this legendary franchise”, and best of all, it’s completely free! You can grab the mod (which requires GZDoom to play) from Batandy’s itch.io page. Also, make sure to follow the instructions on Batandy’s page to get the game set up correctly.

It’s crazy how Doom‘s engine is still able to crank out these crazy games after over 25 years. And yes, this remake works incredibly well and is just as terrifying. Obviously, there are a few minor differences due to limitations of the engine. And yeah, the assets aren’t anywhere near PS4 quality. But it’s still amazing how Batandy was able to pull this off.

To get this thing going, you’ll need a copy of GZDoom, but luckily, you don’t need a Doom WAD in order to play it.

Aliens and DOOM have crossed paths before with various mods, but with Kontra_Kommando’s Aliens: Eradication, the author has thrown in more than just a few new sprites. There’s quite a lot more, actually.

The mod, which you can snag on ModDB, tosses in things such as character classes and cool gameplay mechanics like auto-turrets. One of the more interesting aspects of the mod is that you don’t actually play as a Marine. Instead you have classes like the colonist, whose role is to recruit and command any fellow colonists you encounter. Another is the synthetic, who has must rely on recharging their batteries using generators.

Of course, if you’re more into things that go bang, you can always spring for the Mercenary or the Weyland-Yutani operative. You still have to contend with the usual array of Xenomorphs and facehuggers, but also malfunctioning synthetics and even the Predator. Because why not?

To play this one, you’ll have to fire up GZDoom with the DOOM II WAD file.

After doing almost all there is to do with Brutal DOOM, which had its version 21 released earlier this year, modder Sargeant Mark IV has gone back and created a newish mod called “Meatgrinder”. The mod is “newish” because it’s “meant to bring the dismemberments and explosions of Brutal Doom to a slaughterfest-friendly setting, in a better and more optimized manner.”

Unlike Brutal DOOM, the “Meatgrinder” mod contains no locational damage, no advanced enemy behavior, destroyable dead bodies or advanced enemy behaviour. Instead, it’s a gameplay enhancement mod for the GZDoom engine. “The gameplay is designed to make things easier for people that don`t have the time to learn how to play hardcore mods or are playing with shitty controls such as a touchscreen phone.” The weapons have been rebalanced, “[b]ut remain balanced in a way that they only increase the player`s damage output speed, but barely touches the total damage given so you aren`t really overpowered.”

“Meatgrinder” is meant to be played with “very hard mods” such as Speed of Doom and Slaughterfest 2012. If you decide to play plain DOOM with this mod, Sargeant Mark IV recommends playing the game on Nightmare difficulty to keep the difficulty balanced.

As a bonus, you can use the sv_corpsequeuesize cvar to control the amount of gibs you want to stay in the floor forever.

Mixing Star Wars and DOOM is kind of a no-brainer. Sure, there was the excellent Star Wars: Dark Forces back in the day, but I’m talking about mods. Luckily, Xim’s Star Wars Doom mod for DOOM II does more than just bring over weapons and enemies from Dark Forces. The mod also gives us something that was lacking in Dark Forces: Force powers like Push, Pull, Heal, and Choke.

Originally released last year, the mod has been updated with a few new fixes. The mod eliminates the DOOM II hitscan weapons (which was almost all of them) in favour of the projectile-based mechanics of Dark Forces. Also, enemy infighting has been removed. Imperials, aliens, and bounty hunters will fight the other side, but not amongst themselves. So, you can’t provoke Stormtrooper into taking each other out, but you can get them to take out bounty hunters. The mod includes 25 weapons (many from Dark Forces), more than 40 enemies, and new music and sounds. There are also optional add-on packs will replace props, add more new music, and fix compatibility issues with some mega WADs.

Oh yeah, and those Force powers. Finding two lightsabers in the mod will unlock Force abilities, and with each new one you come across, a new power unlocks. Along with the Push, Pull, Heal, and Choke, you also have the Mind Trick, which causes confuses enemies and causes them to wander around temporarily, Lightning (which does extra damage to mechanical enemies), and the always enjoyable Saber Throw.

To play the mod, you’ll need a copy of DOOM II, along with GZDoom, which you can snag here.

With DOOM Eternal hitting hard this November, some of you are probably hankering for something to keep you busy. You could go back to 2016’s DOOM, but if you really want to get into the spirit of things, Sargeant Mark IV has released v21 Gold of his acclaimed Brutal DOOM mod, complete with trailer.

Technically, it was released back in May, but it needed a kickass trailer to really show it off.

According to Sargeant Mark IV, he wasn’t able to show all of the new features of this update with this trailer (which is set to music by the amazing Andrew Hulshult). “If I were to make a trailer listing every new feature that has been added from v20b to v21 I would probably need to use a Dream Theather[sic] album,” explains the man himself.

For all of that, you’d best check out the changelog, which predictably lists a whack of stuff. To get in on all of this, you’ll need a full version of classic DOOM. The instructions on how to install the mod are pretty easy and straightforward, so you’ll be painting the walls with demon blood in no time.

And in case you want choice (which we all do), there’s now an option to change the amount of blood/gore you’ll be seeing as you gun down enemies. It comes in four varieties: Less; Normal; Extra; and Jesus That’s a Lot. You can guess what version most of us will be using.

So, you thought that Brutal Doom was the best you could get with Doom mods? Again, who knew that when John Carmack released the source code years ago that we’d get something like this?

After being in the works for years, a new total conversion mod for Doom II entitled Total Chaos has been released. And yes, it’s epic. Running on GZDoom source port, the game drops you into an abandoned coal mining community on an island called Fort Oasis. And yes, monsters are running around, hungry for blood.

According to the developer wadaholic, “the player has freedom of choice of either finding the lost community, surviving on their own against the islands deadly forces, or explore Fort Oasis to uncover its most hidden secrets.” Total Chaos features six chapters, eight enemy types, and a lots of guns. In classic survival horror fashion, ammo is somewhat scarce. You’ll have to get up close and personal with tireirons, pickaxes, shivs, and “garden tools”, all of which you can upgrade as you progress through the game.

But enough yakking. Load up your copy of Doom II, grab GZDoom, and head to ModDB to experience something that pushes the Doom engine farther than you ever thought possible.

You know, I’m not sure Doom programmer John Carmack even realized just what kind of funky things people would do with his beloved game when he released the source code a few years back. Aside from the endless mods, we’ve been given things like Brutal Doom, OMDO, and versions of the game on platforms that were never even intended to play the game (like your Texas Instruments calculator).

So, why not have another iteration of Doom where the guy running the other blog used a couple of different mods and a neural network to make the game look like the shading style of the game’s iconic boxart? Prepare yourself, because it gets disturbingly awesome. Using GZDoom, Thunderpeak and Smooth Doom, a neural network (and a buttload of time to render just 15 seconds), we get this:

Now, that might not be so bad, but the same guy also created Deepdream Doom.
