Last week, it was reported that Bloober Team had received grants for three projects, one of which turned out to be Layers of Fear 2, fueling speculation in some circles that Bloober Team’s recent strategic partnership deal with Konami might have one of these turn into a new Silent Hill game. In a new interview with IGN, Bloober Team CMO Tomasz Gawlikowski set the record straight, shooting down speculation (and hope) that Bloober Team was working on the storied franchise’s return.

As mentioned, the first grant was for a project known as “H2O”, which had been proven to have been 2019’s Layers of Fear 2. The second grant was for a project known as “Dum Spiro“, which was a WWII-theme horror title. Unfortunately, Gawlikowski confirmed that after several attempts at creating a game that was “appropriately sensitive to the topic and commercially viable at the same time”, Dun Spiro is no longer in active development.

Lastly, “Black” was a medieval-themed first-person title that likewise has been given the axe. However, Gawlikowski did state that a new project under the same codename is still under development, saying that “it’s now a much different project than what you could read on the web in the past few days”.

As for just what Bloober Team is working on right now, Gawlikowski can’t say. However, he did say that “multiple large projects” are in the works. “At Bloober Team we have two active internal projects, one in the production phase and one in the pre-production phase. Both are going to be bigger in scope than The Medium, however, neither of them is based on themes or premises that have been circulating online in the last days.”

The plot thickens as to what exactly the road back to Silent Hill looks like, but for now, Bloober Team isn’t part of it.

Earlier last week, news broke that Bloober Team and Konami were teaming up for a strategic partnership, which of course has tongues wagging over a potential Silent Hill revival. Things have gotten even more interesting now that Twitter user Bobvids brought to light three Bloober Team projects that have received grants from the European Union’s Media Program over the course of several years.

Keep in mind that these have not been announced or acknowledged by Bloober Team. Furthermore, just because a project received a grant, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s been seen to completion.

The first project is codenamed H2O, which turns out to have been 2019’s Layers of Fear 2. The project is described as a “hidden horror game” with “an intimate story revolving around a singular, specific character”, and features an artistic theme with “call-backs to Layers of Fear assets”. Given that Layers of Fear 2 took place on an ocean liner, the codename makes sense.

The second project is referred to as “BLACK”, and is a first-person title with a medieval theme that features a mixture of exploration, survival and combat. The title will feature multiple endings, and features combat that “always poses a challenge and builds tension, suitable for a survival horror game.” BLACK would also feature aliens and a choice system.

The last project is Dum Spiro, the title of which comes from a Latin sentence “dum spiro, spero” meaning “while I breathe, I hope”. The game takes place during 1941-44 in the Litzmannstadt Ghetto – a World War II ghetto established for Polish Jews. The player takes on the role of an imprisoned boy who “struggles against all odds in order to hide and save his little sister”. Dum Spiro will feature a branching plot divided into 3 acts, at the end of which the player must make a choice in determining which of the episodes they will play next. Your subsequent decisions affect the dilemmas you face in the following episode.

If you’re playing the Silent Hill sweepstakes, BLACK would be the more logical choice, though the description doesn’t sound very Silent Hill. Also, Konami and Bloober Team only just signed their agreement, so until Bloober Team says something, we’re left to wonder.

Legendary hardcore/punk band H2O are heading into the studio to record a cover album featuring some of their favorite songs. The album, appropriately titled Don’t Forget Your Roots, will feature the following bands: The Ramones, Dag Nasty, Madball, Rancid, Circle Jerks, Descendents, Cro-Mags, Bad Brains, The Clash, GovernmentIssue, Verbal Assault, Gorilla Biscuits, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, 7 Seconds, Embrace, Social Distortion, Sick of It All and Warzone. Just to name a few. I’m a huge sucker for cover songs especially when done by a band I enjoy and have a lot of respect for.

Lead singer Toby Morse had this to say: “This album is extremely important to us. These are bands that inspired us to start a band and who have inspired our personal lives. Also with so many young kids getting into hardcore every day, it’s good to always keep exposing them to the ROOTS of this music and getting them into some of the originators of hardcore/punk. We have all gotten to see this bands play live when we were young so covering their songs that made us happy and inspired as kids feels amazing and we feel honored.”

If you aren’t familiar with H2O, click past the break for their videos for What Happened? and Nothing To Lose. And if you are familiar, watch them anyways. Enjoy!
