I’m not sure how long we’re supposed to dance around this spoiler, especially when it’s now available in the form of plastic, but Harold Ramis returns as Egon Spengler in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. It’s not even a brief cameo, but a full-blown reveal that’s integral to the film’s finale.

While some fans think director Jason Reitman went too far with his CGI resurrection of the franchise’s most prominent legacy character, others laud it. Those fans may want to continue to revel in the nostalgia with an action figure based on Ramis’ “performance”.

Hasbro has made available a special box set as part of their Plasma Series. “The Family That Busts Together” comes with not only a ghostly Egon Spengler, but also his granddaughter, Phoebe, played by Afterlife scene-stealer McKenna Grace.

The Plasma Series collectible action figure 2-pack includes proton pack, neutrona wand, plasma stream, mold and fungus jar, chess piece, and PKE meter accessories inspired by the Ghostbusters: Afterlife movie.

It also comes with the highlight piece (the head) in the “build-a-bonus” Terror Dog action figure.

You can score this set at most retailers.

At long last, Sony Pictures is unearthing Ghostbusters: Afterlife, discovering a brand new trailer that’s linked directly to the original two films in many ways.

The trailer targets the nostalgic sweet spot, offering up the first footage of Annie Potts as fan-favorite Janine, the love interest of Egon Spangler, as well as a tease of Dan Aykroyd‘s Ray Stantz. Even further, when the ghosts are unleashed out of a well, we catch a shot of a terror dog/Zuul(?) and possibly even…Gozer?!

It’s already been promised that Bill MurrayErnie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver are also all coming back for this sequel to the original classic, reprising their iconic and beloved roles. But the biggest and most endearing loving homage is being able to see Harold Ramis back in a Ghostbusters movie, even if it’s in YouTube footage of the infamous Ghostbusters television commercial from 1984.

In the film…

When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.

Afterlife‘s cast also includes Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace and Paul Rudd.

Jason Reitman‘s sequel to the original classic(s) is set for theatrical release on November 11, 2021, so we’re not looking at “The Summer of Ghostbusters” but rather the “Holiday Season of Ghostbusters.”

Update: Added a video of Reitman breaking down the trailer that reveals quite a bit of new information and points out a few Easter eggs.

It Came From the ‘80s is a monthly series that pays homage to the monstrous, deadly, and often slimy creatures that made the ‘80s such a fantastic decade in horror.

Where there are Ghostbusters, there is Slimer. The gluttonous ghost didn’t even have a name in his first appearance, nor were the minds behind Ghostbusters II even sure they’d bring him into the mix. Yet Slimer’s presence in both Ghostbusters and The Real Ghostbusters cartoon made him supremely popular with kids, which tipped the indecisive scales on the sequel. In turn, it solidified the Class 5 full-roaming vapor as a mainstay fixture in the franchise.

In the script for Ghostbusters, Slimer had no name. He was referred to as the Onionhead Ghost, described as a foul-smelling thing with an affinity for slime. Director/Producer Ivan Reitman likened the specter to Bluto from Animal House, and he was considered to be the ghost of John Belushi. Designing the Onionhead Ghost of John Belushi proved not as easy as it might sound. Executives and writers had lots of specific ideas, making the lengthy design process for this particular ghost extra tough for Boss Films Studio visual effects team, and effects artist and sculptor Steve Johnson in particular.

According to Johnson, impending deadlines put the pressure on to sculpt the final design, and an assist from cocaine helped him nail it.

As for implementing the lovable ghost on screen, Johnson’s design and sculpt was transformed into a foam latex puppet. Puppeteer Mark Wilson got into the puppet to operate Slimer’s body and arm movement, his legs dressed in pitch black to hide them. Off-camera puppeteers controlled Slimer’s facial expressions. Slimer’s parts were shot against a black screen, and the footage was later overlaid with the rest of the film, giving it that translucent effect. Essentially, a lot of puppeteering and clever camera tricks. Oh and Reitman voiced Slimer.

The same method was used in the creation of the film’s first introduction to the world of supernatural, the somewhat terrifying Library Ghost. Ruth Oliver played the quiet, subdued version of the specter roaming the shelves of the library. When Venkman (Bill Murray), Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Spengler (Harold Ramis) antagonize her with enough noise, her human façade gives way to a much more ghoulish appearance. Like Slimer, Johnson is the one behind her design, too.

The team lifecast Oliver to use as a basis for building a ghastly animatronic version of the character. The human features were elongated and distorted to creepy proportions, and the costume was rigged to tear-away and expose the ghoulish body underneath.

Boss Films and Johnson delivered two memorable ghosts at opposite ends of the scare spectrum, among a sea of remarkable creature designs for one of the ‘80s best supernatural comedies: the lovable mascot of the franchise, and the menacing librarian that offered an initial thrilling introduction to the Ghostbusters. The latter of which served as my own personal gateway into horror.

It’s Slimer, though, that has proven to be one of the most enduring creatures of the ’80s.

Spoiler warning.

Even though Bill Murray was accidentally killed in Ruben Fleischer‘s 2009 film Zombieland, he was worked into this past weekend’s sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap, making an appearance during the film’s end credits. The sequence flashes back to the day of the outbreak, which takes place during a press junket for Garfield 3. But that wasn’t the original plan from the writers, who had to tweak things over the past decade, writes The Hollywood Reporter.

The original plan by screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick was to create the Ghostbusters reunion fans had been salivating for since 1989!

Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson got Bill Murray out on a golf course and were trying to convince him to do a sequel to Ghostbusters. Dan Aykroyd becomes a zombie and attacks Bill and there are golf carts going in the lake and golf clubs being swung at people.”

Joe Pesci also would have been involved, adds the site, while also noting that the scene no longer worked by the time the film went into production. “Ramis, the beloved actor known for playing Egon Spengler in the Ghostbusters films, died in 2014, and in the intervening years, a third Ghostbusters (the 2016 reboot) became a reality.”

“It was really fun, but then with the passage of time, with anything else, it had to be something else,” Reese told THR.

Zombieland: Double Tap is now in theaters everywhere with the new Ghostbusters set for release on July 10, 2020.

I’m not sure anyone deserves this wonderful bit of news after the way people behaved during the release of Paul Feig‘s reimagining of Ghostbusters, but Dan Aykroyd has just reignited talk of a third film reunion.

Going way back, Aykroyd’s Ghost Corps. had long been developing a Ghostbusters 3, which was constantly being held up by costar Bill Murray. Story details leaked (thanks to Bloody Disgusting) as we learned that the film was to star Dana (Sigourney Weaver) and Peter Venkman’s (Murray) lovechild (to clarify, it’s Dana’s son), Oscar, a postgrad student who is forced to take over the business after Venkman dies in the first scene. Murray’s character was to be a ghost in the third film, which allegedly had been green-lit up until Harold Ramis got sick and eventually passed away.

Feig then came in and put a new spin on Ghostbusters, assembling an all-female crew and attempting to echo the original film’s comedic cast. While I personally find joy in the film, the community grotesquely turned on the remake and made it embarrassing to be a Ghostbusters fan (even though a handful of critiques make very good points).

Digressing, Aykroyd wasn’t a fan either, publicly expressing disdain for the film and blaming its failure on Feig’s ballooned budget. While Feig has expressed interest in returning to the director’s chair for a sequel, Aykroyd will never let that happen and has not only been developing an animated feature, but also reviving the original long-developed Ghostbuster 3.

Ghostbusters News has the story, who reports that Aykroyd was the special guest on last night’s episode of AXS TV’s The Big Interview with Dan Rather and revealed they are currently working on the screenplay that, get this, allegedly could have the support of Murray.

“There is a possibility of a reunion with the three remaining Ghostbusters,” said Aykroyd. “It’s being written right now.”

He added:

“I think Billy will come. The story’s so good. Even if he plays a ghost.”

The latter comment implies that they could be poking around the previously green-lit screenplay, which would have to be rewritten to omit Ramis’ scenes. I think a reunion in which a torch is passed to a new generation of ‘busters is the only direction this franchise could go, although an animated feature sounds pretty damn good right about now.

What say you?

Nostalgia screenings are going next level.

Sony has announced a “Ghostbusters Live in Concert” series, complete with screenings of the 1984 comedy with live orchestral accompaniment featuring Elmer Bernstein’s score and Ray Parker, Jr.’s hit “Ghostbusters”!

Variety reports that at each presentation, Peter Bernstein, orchestrator of the original film and son of Elmer Bernstein, will join the local orchestra as guest conductor. “Ghostbusters Live in Concert” will be presented in cities around the globe commencing in the fall.

Columbia Pictures, Ivan Reitman’s Ghost Corps, and Schirmer Theatrical are teaming to present the event.

“I’m thrilled to be presenting Ghostbusters with a live focus on Elmer Bernstein’s brilliant score,” said Reitman. “I’ve always felt that his remarkable music was the magical glue that held together the film’s unique mixture of funny, mysterious, and scary.”

Reitman produced and directed Ghostbusters from a script by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Bill Murray, Aykroyd, and Ramis starred as parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City. Sigourney Weaver, Ernie Hudson, and Rick Moranis co-starred.

“I am deeply excited to be able to bring ‘Ghostbusters Live’ to the concert hall,” said Peter Bernstein. “Working for my father as an orchestrator all those years ago was a unique and wonderful time. To be able to bring that score back to life and conduct it is thrilling both professionally and personally.”

Ghostbusters was a massive hit with nearly $300 million in worldwide box office and led to a 1989 sequel and a 2016 reboot. Parker’s song was nominated for an Oscar in the best original song category and the film also received a nomination for visual effects.

“’Ghostbusters Live in Concert’ promises to be an extraordinary film with live orchestra experience for audiences of all ages,” said Schirmer Theatrical president Robert Thompson. “What makes this particular production unique is that both the film’s director, Ivan Reitman, along with Peter Bernstein, orchestrator of the film and son of Elmer Bernstein, are directly involved in creating this show, along with the wonderful team at Sony Pictures and Ghost Corps. We’re all very excited to bring ‘Ghostbusters Live’ to international audiences.”

At Comic-Con over the weekend, Ghostbusters creative force Ivan Reitman was questioned about the potential of digitally de-aging and/or resurrecting actors in a future Ghostbusters live action film. The question stemmed from Reitman’s hints that a future movie *could* unite the original and reboot crews.

Reitman noted that such digital trickery is “something we’re thinking of,” leading many to speculate that we could eventually see the late Harold Ramis digitally resurrected as Egon Spengler one more time. In the wake of Rogue One bringing Peter Cushing back from the dead, it seems that anything is possible in Hollywood.

Mind you, nothing is even remotely confirmed at this time, but Harold Ramis’ daughter did catch wind of the speculation and she commented on this whole thing in a chat with THR. What does Violet Ramis Stiel think about the potential of CGI being used to bring her father back to the screen?

It’s bizarre. Personally, for me, it is hard to imagine that people would accept it, but who knows,” she told the site. “The technology now is amazing. I try to think what would he have thought. If it’s great and it works, then good. And if there is a problem, then obviously no.”

Stiel subsequently tweeted, “My dad’s #1 contribution to GB was helping shape the story + characters w/his intelligence + humor & you can’t CGI that!

Amen to that.

Is this a really weird trend? I think it might be really weird.

Ivan Reitman has recently expressed a desire to *potentially* unite the casts of the original Ghostbusters and the reboot Ghostbusters for a future live-action film, as he feels that fans of the franchise were bummed that the original characters did not appear in Paul Feig’s film.

Good idea? Bad idea? Well, we’ll let you guys answer that one.

If a future Ghostbusters film did indeed mash up the old and new, that’d presumably mean that Egon Spengler would not be part of the fun. After all, Harold Ramis unfortunately passed away back in 2014. But stranger things have happened in Hollywood.

At Comic-Con yesterday, Reitman was asked by a fan about the potential of using CG technology to either resurrect or de-age actors in such a film. His answer?

It’s possible… it’s something we’re thinking of,” said Reitman. “HINT.”

A new live action film and an animated movie are both currently in development, with one of the two likely being released in time for 2019’s 35th anniversary of the brand.

Updated on March 14th, 2017.

While I wasn’t a fan of the “Ghostheads” documentary, which is now on Netflix, I’m hoping that focusing on the film itself will be more entertaining. With such a rich history behind the franchise, that film’s focus was on super fans, while someone else is taking a stab at the Ghostbusters‘ production with the forthcoming doc, “Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters“.

Eight years in the making and with over seventy cast and crew interviews ‘Cleanin’ Up The Town: Remembering Ghostbusters’ is the definitive documentary that charts how ‘Ghostbusters’ and ‘Ghostbusters 2’ came to fruition and how these films were made by the people that made them.

Interviews include actors in the film Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver Annie Potts, David Margulies, William Atherton, Kurt Fuller and Jason Reitman, Director Ivan Reitman, Producer Michael C. Gross, Visual Effects crew including Richard Edlund, Terry Windell, Dennis Muren and Steve Johnson, musicians Ray Parker Jr and The Bus Boys.

In this extended cut we want audiences to experience a little more of what they can expect from this feature length documentary.

They’ve shared footage from their doc in this new trailer and are hoping to garner some more funds, which you can help provide right here.

I’d love to hear inside stories from the people behind the two films, as well be gifted with never-before-seen shots from the set or behind-the-scenes, especially of how the ghosts per created. There’s so much we don’t know about Ghostbusters and it’s going to take a resilient filmmaker to get it on screen for all of us to enjoy.

Vulture posted an in-depth interview with Ivan Reitman, the director of the original 1984 Ghostbusters and the producer of Paul Feig’s reboot. Not only does he reveal plans for the now defunct third Ghostbusters, but he also reveals that the studio had green-lit it before Harold Ramis got sick.

“By the way, the studio green-lit it. Everything was ready to go. I couldn’t get [Bill Murray‘s] attention, and in the midst of that, Harold got really sick. And that was pretty much it.”

Dan Aykroyd had been the most public about the sequel, almost campaigning to get it into production. There were many false starts, but plenty of rumors. It’s sad to hear that Ghostbusters 3 was finally going to happen and everyone’s hard work came to a close because we lost Ramis. We can only hope that Feig’s interpretation has him smiling from above.

If Murray hadn’t been dragging his feet, it may have actually come into fruition. What Reitman is referring in the above quote to is all the of the publicly reported drama Murray brought to the development process, which is why his character was to die in the opening scene. He speaks to all of this and his theory as to why Murray kept playing games:

“I worked with Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, who wrote a number of movies [‘Year One’, ‘Bad Teacher’] and worked on ‘The Office’ together. They wrote a very funny script [for ‘Ghostbusters 3’] that I was very comfortable in directing, and both Harold and Danny wanted to do. And literally Bill refused to read it for a year. Then finally he may have read a few pages, and I got him on the telephone, and he said, “Look, I just don’t want to do this.” It had nothing to do with how good or bad the script was or anything like that. He was having his own issues in his own life, and I think he just didn’t want to engage…I think the reason that Bill wouldn’t read it was he didn’t want to make a decision about this. So he just ignored it.

“Bill and Sigourney’s kid, Oscar, is a postgrad student, and weird things start to happen,” he added, referring to Murray’s character in the third film. “Bill Murray dies in the first scene, because he always said, ‘I won’t do it unless I die.’ And I said, ‘Okay, you got it.’ [Laughs.] It was a father-son story, with him as a ghost.”

There was also version entitled Hellbent, in which the Ghostbusters actually battled the Devil. Reitman explains why:

“I was never a big fan of that one,” he tells the site. “Danny always loved it. To me, what was funny about the Ghostbusters was putting these extraordinary situations in a world that we knew, surrounded by people that we recognized, real New Yorkers acting like New Yorkers. I thought the comedy was in that juxtaposition. I’ve never liked the more fantastical versions.”

He segues into discussing the original plan for the 1984 film, which was to star John Belushi and take the ‘busters to space!

“Danny’s original treatment [for the original ‘Ghostbusters’], which he wrote for Belushi and himself, took place in outer space and the future, with competing groups of Ghostbusters and all kinds of stuff going on that was almost impossible to shoot on any budget, particularly then without CGI. So after Belushi passed away, he came to me. By then I had worked with Bill, I think three times, and Dan said, “I was thinking of doing this with Bill. What do you think?” And I sat down with him and pitched this contemporary story about guys who are paranormal researchers at Columbia University, get kicked out, and go into business. And it gave us a real structure to write a story that I thought could be way funnier than something more fantastical. It’s why I like the second ‘Ghostbusters’ so much. It probably wasn’t as big as it should’ve been. But I liked that a baby was at the center of it, and that it was really a domestic story. I just looked at that film again, and I was so proud of the comedy work between Sigourney Weaver, Bill, and everybody.”

The full interview has so much more, including plans for a follow up and a new animated movie!

IFC is getting into the viral game in an attempt to get viewers to tune into their showings of both Ghostbusters this month.

They imagine a Ghostbusters sitcom we wish existed: Several kooky friends – Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, Ernie Hudson – and their wacky exploits battling ghosts, learning to love, and living in the city!

Jokes like this can get tiring, yet, look at the above screen-grab of star Harold Ramis and tell me this isn’t perfect?

It’s surprising how well the footage morphs into a parody sitcom intro along the lines of “Family Matters” or “Full House.” I think that, after watching this all the way through, twice, this could have easily been a television comedy.

Variety made huge changes to the announcement that Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig would be helming the next Ghostbusters.

Says the site, the movie is to be a total reboot, most likely with female characters played by comedic actresses in the ghostbusting roles.

The script is being written from scratch.

Feig has been in conversation with Sony to direct the project. However, no formal negotiations have taken place yet. Sony declined to comment.

Here’s a bit of history, with a potential bombshell: Ghostbusters 3 was initially supposed to be directed by Ivan Reitman, the director of the original Ghostbusters and its 1989 follow-up, Ghostbusters II, but he dropped out in March. It’s unclear whether another director will be chosen for that project or if this reboot will take its place. Does this mean multiple films?!

Men in Black 3 writer Etan Cohen was brought on broad in 2012 to redraft Ghostbusters 3. “The Office” scribes Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky were hired in 2008 to revive the blockbuster franchise.

25 years ago today I sat alone in an empty theater – as a nine-year-old boy – watching Ivan Reitman’s Ghostbusters II.

Thus, we’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of the sequel to the smash-hit horror comedy that starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver.

In it, the discovery of a massive river of ectoplasm and a resurgence of spectral activity allows the staff of Ghostbusters to revive the business.

The sequel, which critics weren’t fond of, was still a success taking in $215M worldwide at the box office. A third film should have happened by now, yet we sit here waiting like a bunch of jackasses. I have my proton pack on and ready to go. Sony, what’s up?!

A 30th anniversary you shouldn’t be afraid of is about to kick off this summer with a re-release, new Blu-rays and vinyl soundtracks!

We just received a press release announcing that a 4k restored and remastered Ghostbusters will return to more than 700 movie theaters in both the U.S. and Canada on August 29.

I think I just slimed myself.

This is huge news for hardcore fans like myself as we’ll be able to introduce this classic to our younger family members, who will get to experience this masterpiece for the first time in theaters! I just pray to god that this theatrical run isn’t being pushed through Fathom Events, in which case I want nothing to do with it. I expect this new digital transfer to be flawless.

But it gets event better. This isn’t just a re-release of the classic, it’s a major event.

Following the theatrical release of the film, on September 16, fans will be able to own the Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray and the long-gestured Ghostbusters II 25th Anniversary Edition, as that film makes its Blu-ray debut. The Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases of the films will also be available in a two-disc anniversary edition Blu-ray Digibook including both films, as well as a Limited Edition gift set that includes an exclusive collectible Slimer figurine and the two-disc Digibook. This special gift set will only be available for a very limited time, with the collectible Slimer figurine being a true must-have for fans. Both films have been fully restored and remastered in 4K and will be presented in high definition on Blu-ray from those 4K sources.

Both the Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II Blu-rays come loaded with exclusive bonus materials, including revealing conversations with director Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd, as well as never-before-seen deleted scenes from Ghostbusters II and more. The Ghostbusters anniversary edition features the original music video of the Oscar nominated song “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker Jr., while Ghostbusters II includes the original music video for “On Our Own” by Bobby Brown. In addition, Ghostbusters will contain all previously released legacy content, commentary and an interactive Slimer Mode, offering fans a picture-in-picture graphical viewing experience.

There will also be a slew of new merchandise from Sony Pictures Consumer Products to be released. Collaborations include Lego, Mattel, Funko, Mad Engine and other select items to help celebrate the occasion. In addition, SPCP partnered with Gallery 1988 to create a once-in a lifetime experience, displaying original paintings, limited edition prints, and sculptures inspired by the film.

In addition, Legacy Recordings / Sony Music Entertainment, will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the iconic Ghostbusters soundtrack(!) with multiple collectible vinyl LP releases this year.

Today also marks the premiere of the new website, GHOSTBUSTERS.COM, where fans can access new franchise offerings, including collectible merchandise, music, and more. Fans can register for updates, unique video content, as well as Ghostbusters news.

Directed and produced by Ivan Reitman (Meatballs, Stripes), with the screenplay written by Dan Aykroyd (My Girl) and Harold Ramis (Knocked Up), Ghostbusters is listed as No. 28 on the AFI’s List of America’s Funniest Movies. Bill Murray (Stripes), Dan Aykroyd (Blues Brothers), and Sigourney Weaver (Aliens) star, along with Harold Ramis (Groundhog Day), and Rick Moranis (Honey I Shrunk the Kids). Ernie Hudson (TV’s “Oz”) and Annie Potts (TV’s “Designing Women”) also star in the films.

University parapsychologists Dr. Peter Venkman (Murray), Dr. Raymond Stanz (Aykroyd) and Dr. Egon Spengler (Ramis) lose a research grant when their experiment methodology is proven to be bogus. The team decides to go into business for themselves and open ‘Ghostbusters,’ a ghost removal service. After struggling to get on their feet, they are summoned to investigate the strange happenings in Dana Barrett’s (Weaver) Central Park West apartment. What they discover is that all Manhattan is being besieged by ghosts and other worldly demons through a portal in her building.

I’ve been dying for Columbia Pictures to get their third Ghostbusters off the ground, but with the sudden death of Harold Ramis, it’s kind of hard for me to envision it without him…

Still, the studio will continue forth with him, says a new report on THR.

Explains the site, Ramis’ death on February 24 has has left Sony scrambling to keep Ghostbusters III on track since Ramis, who died at age 69 due to complications from autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, was to have made a cameo appearance in the film.

The sequel’s director Ivan Reitman is scheduled to meet with Sony production brass in the coming days to assess how to move forward on the project that is in active development.

Ramis, who starred in the 1984 original and 1989 sequel alongside Murray and Dan Aykroyd, was poised to appear in a third outing in a cameo role — like Murray and Aykroyd — that set up a baton-passing to a trio of newcomers.

The script, written by “The Office” writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, will now need to be revamped. “There will be some repercussions,” says a project insider.

A studio source downplayed the impact on the project, however, insisting that Ramis was involved in Ghostbusters III only minimally.

He was always great to bounce something off of, and that will certainly be missed,” the source says of Ramis. “But it won’t affect the script.

Even before Ramis’ death, the script had not progressed enough for the film to begin shooting in 2014.

Now, the studio will have to adjust without an on-screen assist from Ramis’ Dr. Egon Spengler…

Some incredibly sad news to report today. Per The Chicago Tribune, writer/director/actor Harold Ramis has died at the age of 69. Often taking a notable creative role in the projects he appeared in, he of course co-wrote as well as starred in Ghostbusters. He was also the writer and director of classics like Caddyshack and Groundhog Day. In addition, he directed the first installment of the National Lampoon’s Vacation series and was the writer of Animal House, Meatballs and Back To School. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg – Ramis was heavily involved in many other wonderful projects.

He had also been making a late career resurgence appearing in films like Knocked Up and Walk Hard. Not only did I immensely enjoy his work as a writer and director, I found his screen presence to be genuinely warm and human and I’m going to miss not seeing more of him.

According to the Tribune his death was a result of “complications of autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, a rare disease that involves swelling of the blood vessels.” He had apparently been battling the disorder since 2010. Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.

A brief Ghostbusters 3 update and still nothing official has come out of Columbia Pictures’ mouth. They haven’t even announced the film yet, so who knows if the long-gestured sequel will even happen.

According to SK, Emma Stone is passing on “Anna” but Jonah Hill still has an offer out for “Jeremy”. So much for the big Superbad reunion. They also state that Sony wants two big stars signed on or they will not green light the picture.

Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, Sigourney Weaver aren’t stars, apparently.

Ivan Reitman will direct if this ever happens. It follows a ragtag group of paranormal researchers reopen their notorious ghost removal service, and a new generation of Ghostbusters is brought on board to be green slimed and trained to contain the mischievous spirits. We previously reported that the new ‘Busters will be lead by Dana and Peter’s lovechild, Oscar.

Here’s a bit of non-news that I’m actually excited to report on.

Personally, Louis Tully is my favorite character in the Ghostbusters franchise, which is why Rick Moranis’ return in Ghostbusters 3 is essential to my support.

Thankfully, he’s not opposed to making a return, he tells Empire in an insanely rare interview.

I haven’t talked to Danny (Aykroyd) about it,” he tells the UK magazine. “Somebody he’s associated with called me and I said, ‘I wouldn’t not do it, but it’s got to be good.’ You know, I’m not interested in doing anything I’ve already done, and I thought the second one was a disappointment.

But I guess I’m interested in where that guy is now. I sort of see him as being Bernie Madoff’s cellmate in jail. Both of them being so orderly that they race to get up and make their beds.

I think he’s selling himself short, as his character could easily be one of the film’s driving forces.

And speaking of short…

If I had a time machine I’d go back and attempt to make a Rick Moranis/Martin Short buddy comedy. It’s one of the biggest mistakes this world has ever served us.

Comedian-turned-actor Dan Aykroyd joined “Larry King Now” to talk about all sorts of stuff, including the long-gestured Ghostbusters 3, which seems destined to eventually happen. While Bloody Disgusting was the first media site to bring you story details, Aykroyd speaks in more detail to Larry King.

Before getting into the actual plot, it’s important to note that Aykroyd boldly stated that Bill Murray is not currently part of the movie. “He’s a good friend, I love him, he just doesn’t want to reprise the role. However, there will be a hole for him. If Billy wants to walk in the door and be in the movie, we will find a place.

But, as we previously revealed, Ghostbusters 3 will feature a new cast of Busters. “We’re going to have to cast. We need four new ghostbusters. We need four new Columbia students,” stated Aykroyd.

As far as the plot of Ghostbusters 3, Dan Aykroyd said, “It’s based upon new research that’s being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University.” Aykroyd added, “Basically there’s research being done that…I can say that the world or our dimension that we live in, our four planes of existence, length, height, width, and time, become threatened by some of the research that is being done. And Ghostbusters, new Ghostbusters have to come and solve the problem.

Of course, we’re going to be doing you in your new format as you comment on what’s happening in Manhattan up there at Morningside Heights,” he adds, joking about King’s new role. “It’s going to be quite a spectacular scene once the stuff starts to break.

In our old breaking news, we exclusively reported that the pic follows a ragtag group of paranormal researchers reopen their notorious ghost removal service, and a new generation of Ghostbusters is brought on board to be green slimed and trained to contain the mischievous spirits. The new ‘Busters could be lead by Dana and Peter’s lovechild, Oscar, although without Murray, this could be written out.

Ivan Reitman will direct for Columbia Pictures, with Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, Sigourney Weaver all rumored to be returning.

While Sony Home Entertainment’s June 2009 Blu-ray release of Ghostbusters somehow won a “Reaper Award,” I was sitting at home scoffing at how badly I felt ripped off. The transfer was absolute garbage; not to mention an insider explained to me that they actually used an old, damaged upconverted transfer, instead of doing it right.

Almost 4 years later, Sony is making amends (at the expense of our pocketbooks) with their 4K release of Ivan Reitman’s 1984 horror comedy starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver.

Our friends at DVDTalk pointed us to the blu-ray forum where they shared some screengrabs of the new 4K Master. According to @TylerFoster of DVDTalk, Sony actually created brand a new transfer this time. He explains, “They actually did it over, from the negative.” Unfortunately, there are no extras, “All of these discs have no extras and are encoded at 1080p — it’s like a flashback to the days of Superbit DVD. Should be $14.99 apiece.

Still, isn’t it enough to finally get a crisp, clear transfer of the ghost bustin’ quartet on Blu-ray? You can pre-order now on Amazon for the May 14 release!

Specs via Amazon: The Blu-ray “Mastered in 4K” collection will set a new standard for Blu-ray HD picture and sound, creating the ultimate 1080p home entertainment experience. Some slight news on Sony’s Ghostbusters, which will apparently not be shooting this summer since writer Etan Cohen is still only about halfway through the script. The good news is that Dan Aykroyd is apparently inspired by some cool real-world scientific discoveries that they could use to bridge over into the supernatural universe for the sequel.

Aykoryd told ABC (via Badass Digest), “ I feel re-encouraged, reinvigorated by the pages that I have seen. I know that we’re expecting half of the screenplay to be completed very soon. It should be into production by the fall and be shooting by the new year. I won’t say anything, it’s very exciting. The Higgs boson and the particle theories, gluons and mesons, that really gives us a scientific base in terms of our fictional storytelling, to open up to another dimension and have something horrible come through.

Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver are all rumored to be returning at some capacity. Again – this will crush all of your dreams if/when it happens. Trust me.

Bill Murray doesn’t have an obligation to the fans to star in Ghostbusters 3, let alone any movie. In fact, many Bloody readers have sounded off that they don’t even want to see the sequel. But alas, Sony and Columbia Pictures continue to tweak their proton packs for a third battle with the undead in New York.

The project, which has been in development for several years now, would bring Ivan Reitman back behind the camera, with Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson returning to bust some ghosts (and pass along the torch), alongside Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver (depending on what source you believe; and take into consideration the years of development could cause players to get cold feet).

And thanks to the team’s failed attempts dedication to bring Bill Murray back into the fold as Dr. Peter Venkman, the project has been in development hell for the better part of a decade. What’s interesting though is the roundabout news that, once again, Sony is looking to do Ghostbusters 3 as an animated film, a source exclusively reveals to Bloody Disgusting. This was the original plan back in 2007, which eventually resulted in the incredible 2009 video game.

Whether you blame Murray for stringing everyone along and not giving a flat “no” (though it seems he has done this several times), or you point your finger at Aykroyd and Reitman for agreeing accepting that string – it seems the damage to the project might be permanent. In the end, it looks like they may go with “Plan Z,” which would entail animating the feature and bringing the cast in for a few days of voice work. If I were a gambling man, I’d say Murray couldn’t turn down a massive paycheck for one day of work. (Cameron Diaz earned $3 million for Shrek, $10 million for Shrek 2, and a disturbing $30 million for Shrek The Third.)

Hot on the heels of Sony deciding to shoot their new Ghostbusters in the summer, they’ve now lightly applied the brakes. They’re going to be making some decisions about the film this spring, which in all likelihood would preclude a summer start. In fact they’ve said as much.

Per THR, “ Any ‘decision’ on Ghostbusters III, the long-, long-gestating sequel, has been postponed until the end of March — this after Men in Black 3 writer Etan Cohen was paid a huge sum for a script. Shooting was to begin next summer but now couldn’t start before fall at the earliest.” I’m hoping for never.

Hiding within an article over at Deadline, they report that Kevin Costner and Ivan Reitman’s football feature Draft Day is being put in turnaround by Paramount as Ivan Reitman will begin shooting the new Ghostbusters next summer.

Next summer is a long ways away, and there are quite a few questions that need answering before it goes into production (something I won’t believe until I receive a shooting announcement from Columbia Pictures). First, is it going to be a sequel or is it going to be a reboot? Is Bill Murray officially out? Or will he be included by some sort of other means (digital, animated etc…)? And, will the plot follow Peter and Dana’s lovechild, Oscar, who is rumored to lead the modern Ghost Buster team?

There’s a lot to find out before next summer as Etan Cohen rewrites Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky’s screenplay.

Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver are all rumored to be returning at some capacity. Personally, I just want to see Moranis return to acting. He is missed greatly here at Bloody.

While we’ve watched everyone involved trade verbal blows, and then deny them, something interesting terrifying has been brewing under the streets of New York City.

In a recent interview with Collider, Reitman was asked about the sequel. His response sent me into a state of shock: “I think Ghostbusters probably should be remade, if we can get it all right. We’re working on it, so we’ll see.

Unfortunately, reporter Christina Radish didn’t follow up with the shocking statement. It’s as if it went completely unheard. If I were in that position, they’d be checking to see if I were okay after having fallen off my chair.

Etan Cohen, Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky had been working on various screenplays that would introduce a new generation of Ghostbusters (lead by Dana and Peter’s lovechild, Oscar).

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Bill Murray will probably never reunite with Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson for Ghostbusters 3. I’m not sure if he hints that he’ll do it out of a genuine sense of curiostiy in the project (or paycheck) or if he just likes seeing how high Aykroyd will jump to accomodate the possibility.

Apparently Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky are no longer involved with the script and new – unnamed – talent has been attached. Aykroyd told ABC, “”new writing staff working on it now. It’s got to be perfect. That’s the whole thing. There’s no point in doing it unless it’s perfect.

This comes on the heels of the comment Murray made to David Letterman last month, “You just have to have a really good script, you know, it’s hard. I think, you know, we’ll try again.” But if you watch the video of that, his eyes aren’t exactly brimming with enthusiasm.

Columbia Pictures had hoped to tell the story of a ragtag group of paranormal researchers whom reopen their notorious ghost removal service, with a new generation of Ghostbusters brought on board to be green slimed and trained to contain the mischievous spirits. We previously reported that the new ‘Busters will be lead by Dana and Peter’s lovechild, Oscar. Perhaps those plans have changed depending on whether or not the new guys are polishing Eisner and Stupnitsky’s previous draft or are building a new one from the ground up.

Bill Murray will probably never reunite with Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson for Ghostbusters 3. Yet he occasionally will dole out some kind of info and dangle the carrot a little bit. Does he like f*cking with Dan Aykroyd that much? Maybe. In the below interview with David Letterman he seems to be considering the prospect when he says, “we’ll try again.” But, honestly, I just don’t think it’s in the cards.

Columbia Pictures hopes to tell the story of a ragtag group of paranormal researchers whom reopen their notorious ghost removal service, with a new generation of Ghostbusters brought on board to be green slimed and trained to contain the mischievous spirits. We previously reported that the new ‘Busters will be lead by Dana and Peter’s lovechild, Oscar. Rick Moranis and Sigourney Weaver have both been closely connected to the project.

I personally hope Ghostbusters 3 never happens. I love the first movie but, at this point, a third is something we only think we want. When we finally get it (if ever), we’ll hate it. I think Murray is being smart about this one, his trepidations are well founded.

Ghostbusters

As much as I scoff at the National Enquirer, I’ve always believed strongly that there’s a small bit of truth in everything they report. Living in Los Angeles the past decade as sort of made this belief more prevalent.

With that said, the tabloid trash mag is reporting on some pretty insane Ghostbusters III news that should (maybe) be taken with a grain of salt.

As previously reported, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver and Harold Ramis had all agreed to rebirth the Ghostbusters franchise – but Murray, who’s got script approval, kept refusing to take producers’ phone calls after they’d send rewrites.

But here’s the kicker, the site is reporting that after they sent him the latest reworked screenplay weeks ago, Murray fired back his shocking answer – nailing the coffin shut forever – by sending Dan and Harold a box containing the new script SHREDDED into confetti, along with this nasty note: “No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts!

Insiders say furious Dan and Harold vow that Bill’s off their “who ya gonna call” list forever – and they’ll make the movie WITHOUT him! YIKES. Aykroyd eluded to this back on August 25. Maybe now they’ll take Winston Zeddemore a bit more seriously?

Good news is that it sounds as if the spring start date will be met, too bad it’ll be without the spine of the old ghost bustin’ crew.

One of our inside jokes here at Bloody Disgusting is Ernie Hudson’s involvement in the potential third Ghostbusters film. Hudson, who has resorted to doing a fairly large amount of autograph conventions, would probably give just about anything to return to the franchise that gave his career major life. So why do I find it unsettling that he hasn’t even been contacted about returning? Will the “fourth wheel” Ghost Buster once again be the last to join?

According to THR, Hudson, who played Winston Zeddmore in the Ghostbusters films, says he hasn’t been approached about a role in the film.

I haven’t seen anybody with any money, but I hear it’s happening, and I’ve been reading all the press stuff, and the fans have been telling me that it’s on,” Hudson said.

Ivan Reitman, who directed and produced the first two movies, returns with Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, and even Sigourney Weaver.

Recent reports indicate that the project is close to its demise as star Bill Murray refuses to read the latest draft.

Howard Stern was lucky enough to receive a call from the elusive BIll Murray, the legendary comedian/actor who marches to the beat of his own drum. Over the past few weeks Murray has had multiple fingers pointed in his direction as the hold up on the long-gestured Ghostbusters 3. The truth?

Stern asked Murray about the rumors: “I guess I’m the problem. Before I was an asset. Now I’m a problem,” he explained. Bill said he had the script somewhere (“I haven’t read it yet.“) and liked his Ghostbusters co-stars (“We really are funny together.“) but hadn’t taken the time to consider the project: “It’s not the foremost thing in my mind right now so I don’t think about it.

I seriously think it’s time to official give up any hope on seeing Murray and Weaver’s love-child take the reigns as a new Ghost Buster. Maybe they can just license Murray’s likeness and insert him as a CG ghost? I’ll take that blow just to see Columbia Pictures get this off the ground. Sigh.

Supposedly, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, and Sigourney Weaver have agreed to return, with Ivan Reitman taking the reigns. I just want to see Rick Moranis back in action!

Latest ‘Ghostbusters III’ Rumor Blames Bill Murray… Again https://bloody-disgusting.com/news/23010/latest-ghostbusters-iii-rumor-blames-bill-murray-again/ https://bloody-disgusting.com/news/23010/latest-ghostbusters-iii-rumor-blames-bill-murray-again/#comments Wed, 12 Jan 2011 10:04:06 +0000 http://bloodydev.com/news/23010/latest-ghostbusters-iii-rumor-blames-bill-murray-again/ Deadline just did a report on Columbia Pictures’ struggle to get Ghostbusters III off the ground, with the highlight once again punning the blame on an unsigned Bill Murray. Deadline just did a report on Columbia Pictures’ struggle to get Ghostbusters III off the ground, with the highlight once again punning the blame on an unsigned Bill Murray. Earlier reports indicated Murray had recently received a new screenplay and now Director IvanReitman and Sony Pictures have no idea if the mercurial Murray will smile on the script they’ve just sent him. Without Murray, the studio absolutely will NOT make the film, which gives an extraordinary amount of leverage to a quirky actor who leaves financiers sweating until the moment he shows up on the set. It appears Murray is to blame. More inside….
Deadline writes:

“This is too big a project to play games. “The studio won’t even think about forward on a $150 million film unless Bill has a closed deal and a commitment,” said an insider. “It’s too huge a risk to do any meaningful prep, hoping he shows up.”

It has been 21 years since the last Ghostbusters sequel, which wasn’t as good as the 1984 original and didn’t gross as much. Despite that, Sony Pictures Entertainment has tried over and over to scare up a new ghost comedy that would entice Murray and his compatriots Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis for another encore. It has gone long past the point when a studio hurries a sequel to capitalize on the momentum of the last film and nobody was going to hurry unless a good script made it worthwhile, Sony has proven adept at figuring out problem sequels: for years, Men in Black 3 seemed unmake-able because of the battles between director Barry Sonnenfeld and producer Walter Parkes, a prohibitive amount of first dollar gross committed, and the inability to agree on a creative direction. When a good script finally materialized, Sonnenfeld and Parkes made peace and talent traded first dollar gross for cash break deals. The picture is slotted for May 25, 2012 release.

SPE thinks it has the same opportunity on Ghosbusters III, because of the script by The Office writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. Murray had been aloof about an Ghostbusters but Aykroyd and Ramis felt a thaw after the cast got together a couple of years ago to work on a video game. Eisenberg and Stupnitsky delivered the goods, and Aykroyd, Ramis and Reitman added their own touches before sending the script to Murray. The script brings back the original cast, who pass the torch to newcomers, which sets up future installments.

When the mercurial Murray does turn up on a film set, it’s worth the wait. He’s generating Best Supporting Actor talk for his performance in Get Low, and he was a definite highlight of Sony’s Zombieland. But nobody envies a studio having to rely on him for such a big piece of business, because Murray moves to the beat of his own drum. Even trying to get an answer on Murray’s thoughts conjures up the signature Ghostbusters line, ‘Who you gonna call?’ He has been without an agent for several years and doesn’t have a publicist. He has an attorney but a call to his office was met with the curt reply that they don’t talk to reporters. Bottom line: a yes from Murray moves Ghostbusters III right into pre-production, with shooting to begin as fast as possible. If Murray says no, the film doesn’t have a ghost of a chance. No pressure, Dr. Peter Venkman.”

This entire Ghostbusters 3 circus is officially pissing me off. Every single person involved is a f*cking liar, or spinning their words, or playing semantics (sift through all of the finger pointing). There’s obviously a problem somewhere as the wheel is missing the proper spokes to get rolling. It’s been promised over and over, only now attached director Ivan Reitman is calling everyone a liar. “Virtually everything you’ve read on the internet [about Ghostbusters III] is not accurate,” he tells Cinema Blend, adding that they still need to get the cast together first. “[We] have some actors who seem to be interested in doing it, a ton of interest in the film.” Yeah, I’m sure it’s all bull crap, even when we broke the news that he’d be directing. According to his brash response, I guess he’s not? Ridiculous. Columbia, put your foot down, slam a fist, it’s time to get this goddamn movie off the ground already.

Oh boy, here we go again. When there are a handful of egos involved in any project, there are bound to be problems. Such the case with Ghostbusters 3, Columbia Pictures’ hotly anticipated sequel that’s had its fair share of problems, most of which keep being swept publicly under the rug. While Dan Aykroyd plays “good cop”, the rest of the cast have been very outspoken about the “Bill Murray delays”. Ernie Hudon, who plays Winston Zeddemore in the Ghostbusters franchise, is the latest to chime in.
Dan and Harold are working on the script,” Hudson tels Movie Mikes. “If it happens we will see but Bill has been the hold up. His definition of good is a little bit different than everybody elses. So we will see, I would love to see it happen. I know the fans have been asking for it … so hopefully.

He continues, “Bill’s a great guy, he’s kind of quirky but I love him. He’s a guy who is very much into what he’s feeling. I know he really cares about his work, which is probably why there hasn’t been another Ghostbusters as of yet.

Assuming the movie ever gets off the ground (a May start is rumored), Ivan Reitman will direct the returning cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, and Sigourney Weaver. Anna Faris, Bill Hader and Will Forte are three names being thrown around to join the cast.

Lead by Dana and Peter’s lovechild, Oscar, a new breed of Ghost Busters are passed the torch…

Bloody Disgusting reader ‘Jonas’ reports in with a fresh Ghostbusters 3 update that confirms many of the casting rumors floating around the web. According to Jonas, producer/writer/star Dan Aykroyd was on WGN Radio Chicago where he commented on those pesky rumors. He confirmed that they are casting and open to finding some fresh faces, adding that both Bill Hader and Anna Faris have been mentioned as “strong possibilities”, although it’s still too earlier to call. Aykroyd, who plays Dr. Raymond Stantz in the franchise, also mentioned Eliza Dushku’s name again, also confirming (what we already knew) that both Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver are returning. Columbia Pictures is aiming at a May 2011 start date.

Obviously, none of this is confirmed so keep this filed under “rumor” until further notice.
