Available today and throughout October, viewers can explore a best-in-class lineup of acclaimed new releases, blockbuster franchises, genre-defining classics, and exclusive titles, delivering a month of unforgettable scares for the spooky season.

HBO Max’s Halloween lineup kicked off early last month with the highly anticipated streaming debut of A24’s Backrooms, the studio’s highest-grossing film ever both domestically and worldwide. Viewers can also look forward to the premiere of Evil Dead Burn on October 2, and the new HBO Original Documentary series “The Pet Cemetery Murders: A Ghost Story” on October 11.

To help audiences discover their next scare, HBO Max’s “Horror Comes Home” Halloween hub is spotlighting a variety of specially curated collections and refreshed artwork throughout the month. Programming rails include “Horror Comes Home,” “Trick or Treat,” “Must-Scream Horror,” “A Killer Movie Marathon,“ “Haunted Hall of Fame,” “Creature Features,” “What’s Around The Corner” (debuts 10/2), and more themed homepage collections that celebrate the breadth and diversity of the horror genre.

In addition, horror fans can now tune into a new virtual channel, “Essential Horror,” which features a curated mix of series and films from the HBO Max horror catalog.

Below is a list of available curations along with a selection of series and films available to stream on HBO Max’s Halloween pages:

The post All The Horror Heading To Hulu, Netflix, Tubi & Other Streaming Services In October 2026 appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

The film will debut on HBO linear on October 3 at 8:00 p.m. ET, following special showings of Evil Dead (2013) at 4:45 p.m. ET and Evil Dead Rise at 6:20 p.m. ET.

After the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws in their secluded family home. As one by one they are transformed into Deadites—turning the gathering into a family reunion from hell—she comes to discover that the vows she took in life… live on even in death.

Souheila Yacoub, Tandi Wright, and Hunter Doohan lead the cast of the brand new Evil Dead movie alongside Luciane Buchanan, Errol Shand and Maude Davey.

The film is directed by Sébastien Vaniček and written by Sébastien Vaniček and Florent Bernard. It is produced by Rob Tapert and Sam Raimi. The executive producers are Bruce Campbell, Romel Adam, Sarah Spurway, Jose Cañas and Lee Cronin.

Sébastien Vaniček is joined behind the camera by director of photography Philip Lozano, production designer Nick Connor, editor Maxime Caro, makeup and effects designer Jane O’Kane, and costume designer Sarah Voon. Evil Dead Burn features music by Double Danger.

The critical reception for Evil Dead Burn was a bit less positive than the reception to Evil Dead Rise, with Rise hitting 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and Burn currently sitting at 71%. It’s interesting to note, however, that the “Popcornmeter” on Rotten Tomatoes is a bit higher for Burn than it was for Rise, with Burn‘s currently at 80% and Rise‘s sitting a tad lower at 76%.

Next installment Evil Dead Wrath has already wrapped production for an expected release in 2028.

The Hollywood Reporter lets us know that Warner Bros. Discovery has picked up “Crystal Lake” for HBO Max in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, excluding the U.K. and Ireland.

“The series is set to debut on HBO Max across the region later this year,” THR notes.

Here in the United States, “Crystal Lake” slashes into Peacock on October 15. We know that ALL EIGHT EPISODES of “Crystal Lake” will release at the same time on that date.

Each episode has a runtime of 60 minutes.

The series follows single mother Pam Voorhees who has been unable to shake her grief after her young, sickly son Jason tragically drowned in the town lake almost a year before. When two strangers arrive at Pam’s door digging into her past, a disturbing chain of events is set into motion, leaving the townspeople of Crystal Lake wondering: just who is Pam Voorhees?

Linda Cardellini stars as Pamela Voorhees, a mother who gave up a singing career to raise her special needs child, only to take a dark turn when she loses her son — Jason.

Callum Vinson (“Chucky”) is playing young Jason in “Crystal Lake,” which will tell the origin story of the masked slasher who has stalked the grounds of Crystal Lake for decades.

Brad Caleb Kane (“IT: Welcome to Derry”) is the showrunner for the series.

The eight-episode series “Crystal Lake” is directed by Michael Lennox (“Derry Girls”), Celine Held & Logan George (Caddo Lake), and Quyen Tran (“The Pitt”).

If you need even more incentive for an Evil Dead marathon, Evil Dead Burn actor Hunter Doohan recently teased that the new installment not only connects to Evil Dead Rise, but Sam Raimi‘s original trilogy as well.

It’s also highly recommended by Ash originator Bruce Campbell, who warned on social media that the uninitiated may need to practice for the visceral Deadite horror ahead.

HBO Max is making this directive even easier; all five Evil Dead movies are now available to stream on the service as of July 1!

Catch up on The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness, 2013’s Evil Dead, and Evil Dead Rise this weekend. For bonus credit, the Evil Dead series “Ash vs Evil Dead” is available to stream on Starz and Pluto TV.

Sébastien Vaniček’s Evil Dead Burn releases in theaters July 10, 2026.

After the loss of her husband, a woman seeks solace with her in-laws in their secluded family home. As one by one they are transformed into Deadites—turning the gathering into a family reunion from hell—she comes to discover that the vows she took in life… live on even in death.

Souheila Yacoub, Tandi Wright, and Hunter Doohan star.

Get ready for an onslaught of Deadite carnage; Vaniček promises the R-rated feature will get even gnarlier with his director’s cut.

Here’s what’s coming.

What’s the Fourth of July without Jaws? Peacock has you covered for a Jaws marathon this holiday weekend. The holiday also brings two 2026 theatrical releases to streaming: Lee Cronin’s The Mummy on HBO Max and Disney+/Hulu adds Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. Sharks close out the month, too, with the arrival of The Devil’s Mouth on Prime Video.

If you missed splatstick comedy Over Your Dead Body in theaters, look for it on Sundance Now on July 31. Also look for 2026 horror releases Exit 8 and Faces of Death to arrive on Shudder.

The post All the Horror Heading to Hulu, Netflix, Tubi & Other Streaming Services in July 2026 appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

The horror movie will make its global streaming debut exclusively on HBO Max on Friday, July 3. The film will debut on HBO linear on Saturday, July 4 at 8:00 pm ET.

The gory reimagining of a Universal Horror classic follows as ” a journalist’s young daughter disappears into the desert without a trace. Eight years later, the broken family is shocked when she is returned to them, as what should be a joyful reunion turns into a living nightmare.”

Jack Reynor (Midsommar), Laia Costa (“The Wheel of Time”), May Calamawy (“Moon Knight”), Natalie Grace (“1923”), and Veronica Falcón (“Ozark”) lead the cast.

From Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and New Line Cinema, the film is produced by horror master James Wan, Jason Blum, and John Keville. Lee Cronin executive produces.

“This is a very different kind of Mummy movie,” Cronin promises. “It’s an insane mashup to suggest, but [the film is] almost one part Poltergeist and one part Se7en.” Though I’d argue it’s all parts Evil Dead.

Cronin previously told BD of his Mummy, “The aspiration to want to do something unique, but placed it within the sandbox of the Mummy sort of lore and mythology. But within that, how do we find something that we haven’t quite seen before?”

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is rated “R” for “Strong disturbing violent content, gore, language, and brief drug use.”

On a related note, The Mummy 4 starring Brendan Fraser is coming soon!

The post ‘Lee Cronin’s The Mummy’ Makes Streaming Debut Next Week appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

HBO Max will also have a version of The Bride! with American Sign Language, performed by ASL dubber Yamila Davis and directed by Rosa Lee Timm (Sinners with BASL).

Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley star in the iconoclastic take on the classic horror story with Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz.

It follows a lonely “Frank” who travels to 1930s Chicago to ask groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronious to create a companion for him. The two revive a murdered young woman, and The Bride is born.

What ensues is beyond what either of them imagined: Murder! Possession! A wild and radical cultural movement! And outlaw lovers in a wild and combustible romance!

Gyllenhaal produces alongside Emma Tillinger Koskoff (Joker, The Wolf of Wall Street), Talia Kleinhendler, and Osnat Handelsman Keren. Executive producers are Carla Raij, David Webb, and Courtney Kivowitz.

The Bride! is rated R for “strong/bloody violent content, sexual content/nudity, and language.”

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “The Bride! dedicates itself fully to giving the Bride of Frankenstein the chance she wasn’t really afforded in her introductory film: to live.”

The post Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ‘The Bride!’ Streams on HBO Max Next Week appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

Sam Raimi’s Send Help makes its streaming debut on Hulu this month, along with under-the-radar new releases like Babak Anvari’s Hallow Road, the Daisy Ridley-starring zombie drama We Bury the Dead.

The arrival of Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair on Peacock comes with a Quentin Tarantino collection that includes horror faves like Death Proof. Screambox transforms a kids show into nightmare fuel with Monkey’s Magic Merry Go Round.

Yes, that means all nine Alien franchise movies – including the two Alien vs. Predator crossover movies – are now streaming together, in a single place, and only on HBO Max!

And you’re not just getting one version of each movie, either. Various Alien Extended Cuts, Special Editions, and even an Assembly Cut are now streaming on HBO Max as well.

Ridley Scott’s prequels Prometheus and Alien Covenant had already been streaming on HBO Max heading into this week, but the following titles were all added on April 1:

• Alien
• Alien: Director’s Cut
• Aliens
• Aliens: Director’s Cut
• Alien 3
• Alien 3: The Assembly Cut
• Alien Resurrection
• Alien Resurrection: Special Edition
• AVP: Alien vs. Predator
• Alien vs. Predator: Extended Cut
• Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem
• Alien vs. Predator: Requiem: Extended Cut

Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus was then added to HBO Max today, completing the collection and making Max your one-stop-shop for the entirety of the decades-spanning Alien saga.

As for the Alien franchise on the small screen, Noah Hawley’s series “Alien: Earth” is only streaming on Hulu and Disney+, so you unfortunately won’t find the show on HBO Max.

But the movies are all there at your fingertips on HBO Max. Enjoy!

Fuller makes his feature directorial debut on the fantastical gateway horror movie from his own script.

In the film, 10-year-old Aurora has a mysterious neighbor who kills real-life monsters: he’s a hit man for hire. So, when Aurora needs help killing the monster she believes ate her entire family, she procures his services.

Suspecting that her parents may have fallen victim to assassins gunning for him, Aurora’s neighbor guiltily takes the job. To protect her, he’ll need to battle an onslaught of assassins — and accept that some monsters are real.

Mads Mikkelsen, Sophie Sloan, Sigourney Weaver, David Dastmalchian, Rebecca Henderson, and Sheila Atim star.

Fuller produces alongside Basil Iwanyk & Erica Lee of Thunder Road (John Wick, Sicario).

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review out of TIFF, “Dust Bunny, guided by Fuller’s strong and distinct vision, easily stacks up against many of the formative gateway horror films of yesteryear. So much so that it feels all but destined for cult classic status.”

Dust Bunny will be released on 4K Ultra HD on April 28 via Lionsgate.

The 1985 Japanese post-apocalyptic fantasy anime film is written and directed by Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell), who supervised the restoration.

The acclaimed filmmaker collaborated with revered artist Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy, Vampire Hunter D) on the allegorical tale, which intertwines Oshii’s thematic reflections on philosophy and theolog with Amano’s distinctive ink painting style.

Set in an underwater city, a young girl takes care of a large egg she holds carefully in her arms – a treasure that she believes is an angel’s egg. A boy with a gun arrives in search of a bird he saw in his dream.

At first, it seems as if feelings of sympathy are developing between the two. Then, one night, the boy crushes her precious egg.

Jinpachi Nezu and Mako Hyōdō voice the boy and the girl, respectively, with Keiichi Noda serving as narrator.

The new restoration of Angel’s Egg screened at last year’s Cannes, Fantasia, New York Film Festival, and Fantastic Fest before hitting theaters in November.

The big reveal in “Welcome to Derry” Episode 6 is that Madeleine Stowe’s Ingrid Kersh is the daughter of Bob Gray, the performer who played the original Pennywise the Clown at the Derry carnival in the early 1900s. It would seem that Pennywise was a real clown that the interdimensional being known as IT decided to take the form of, and this has led Ingrid to believe that Pennywise is her dead father. It’s for this reason that Ingrid has been helping IT achieve its sinister goals, and the episode also revealed that Ingrid is a creepy clown too.

Ingrid Kersh has been haunting the show’s characters as Periwinkle the clown all this time, a side act to her father’s Pennywise that sees Ingrid dressed up in her own clown attire. Periwinkle was glimpsed in previous episodes of “IT: Welcome to Derry,” most notably in the photo the kids took in the graveyard. That wasn’t Pennywise, but rather Periwinkle the clown.

It’s interesting to note that Ingrid Kersh is one of the forms IT takes in Andy Muschietti’s movie IT: Chapter Two, with the show’s big Episode 6 twist adding several new layers to that character’s appearance in the movie. We’ll be learning much more about Periwinkle and her father Bob Gray in Episode 7, which premieres the night of Sunday, December 7 on HBO Max.

Watch the official episode trailer below for a taste.

Co-showrunner Jason Fuchs tells EW, “[Bill Skarsgård’s] performance goes to some unexpected places [in the weeks ahead]. [He] has opportunities with this character that the story of the films did not present. Not only are you getting a really thrilling build-up to seeing Pennywise, you are gonna see Bill doing things you’ve not seen him do in this character yet.”

Just two more episodes remain in “Welcome to Derry” Season One…

He’s always wondered how you’d taste…

It was 35 years ago this week that Tim Curry first brought Stephen King’s killer clown Pennywise to the small screen, terrorizing an entire generation and living on in their nightmares for decades to come. Bill Skarsgård took over the role in the big screen adaptations of the tale, with “IT: Welcome to Derry” serving as a prequel to those theatrical nightmares.

Check out an exclusive sneak peek at Pennywise’s return below and be sure you don’t miss the next four episodes of “IT: Welcome to Derry” on HBO Max beginning this Sunday night!

You can also preview the back half of the show’s first season by watching the Midseason Trailer below, which promises that the show’s most harrowing nightmares are still to come.

Serving as an expansion of Andy Muschietti’s IT films based on Stephen King‘s 1986 novel, the show’s first season is set in 1962. Muschietti himself directs multiple episodes.

“IT: Welcome to Derry” has kicked off its story in 1962 in the time leading up to the events of It: Chapter One (2017). From there, the planned second and third seasons will jump back in time and take place in their own distinct decades. The series is based on Mike Hanlon’s interludes from King’s book, which document “catastrophic events” from Derry, Maine’s past.

The finale of the first season will premiere on Sunday, December 14.

But first, get ready to return to the house on Neibolt Street on Sunday, November 23…

The post ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ – Exclusive New Look at the Return of Bill Skarsgård’s Pennywise! appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

The film will debut on HBO linear on November 22 as the culmination of a franchise marathon:

• 7:35am ET: The Nun
• 9:15am ET:  The Nun II
• 11:08am ET: Annabelle
• 12:50pm ET: Annabelle: Creation
• 2:43pm ET: The Conjuring
• 4:38pm ET: The Conjuring 2
• 8:00pm ET: The Conjuring: Last Rites

Produced by franchise architects James Wan and Peter Safran, the ninth installment in horror’s high-grossing universe had the biggest global opening for a horror movie of all time with $194 million in September.

Based on the real-life Smurl Family Haunting, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson return as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren for one last case that strikes at the core of their mission and attacks the very heart of their family.

Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun II) directs from a script by Ian Goldberg & Richard Naing (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, The Nun II) and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It).

Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hardy, Tony Spera, Steve Coulter, Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, Beau Gadsdon, Kíla Lord Cassidy, John Brotherton, and Shannon Kook round out the cast.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “Last Rites is suitably nightmarish where it counts, bringing memorable chills that linger and spilling more blood than usual in a Conjuring film. But it’s more affecting for the way it wears its heart on its sleeves, with Wilson and Farmiga giving their final bow as Ed and Lorraine Warren their all.”

New Line is reportedly developing a Conjuring prequel with Rodrigue Huart in talks to direct.

Written and directed by Ari Aster (Midsommar, Hereditary), the satirical contemporary western set against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic stars Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal.

In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Phoenix) and mayor (Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.

Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone round out the cast.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “Eddington makes you sit with the discomforting tour down memory lane, just dialed up to violent, satirical excess. That it feels like it’s punching down in its pitch-black observations only further frustrates. Aster’s latest winds up feeling like empty provocation for provocation’s sake, and not much else.”

The post Ari Aster’s Pandemic Western ‘Eddington’ Hits HBO Max Next Month appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

Written and directed by Zach Cregger (Barbarian), the hit horror film earned more than $136 million at the U.S. box office and over $239 million worldwide.

When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.

Julia Garner (Wolf Man), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame),  Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Austin Abrams (“The Walking Dead”), Cary Christopher (Mank), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), and Amy Madigan (Field of Dreams) star.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “This is a horror movie that trusts its audience, while also delivering on practical effects-driven violence, methodically employed scares, and a biting sense of humor that’ll leave you squealing and squirming in equal measure.”

Cregger is considering a prequel centered on Madigan’s Aunt Gladys. But first, his Resident Evil movie is due out on September 18, 2026.

The satirical body horror movie stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid.

Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime, is suddenly fired from her fitness TV show. She is then drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug: The Substance. All it takes is one injection and she is reborn – temporarily – as the gorgeous, 20-something Sue.

Coralie Fargeat (Revenge) writes and directs.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “Fargeat helms with assured confidence, delivering a tactile visual feast for the senses. Considering just how insane the horror gets, complete with a protracted finale that more than earns the robust runtime, well, here’s to hoping it doesn’t take Fargeat quite so long to release her next horror manifesto. The Substance is a campy body horror revelation.”

The Substance ranked highly on Bloody Disgusting’s Best Horror Movies of 2024, Best Horror Movie Kills of 2024, and Best Horror Movie Performances of 2024.

The post ‘The Substance’ Starring Demi Moore Hits HBO Max in October appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

Nancy Won (“Supernatural,” “Jessica Jones”) will serve as the project’s showrunner, writer and executive producer, Variety reports. Peter Cameron (“Werewolf by Night”) and Cameron Squires (“WandaVision”) have also boarded the series as writers.

James Wan’s Atomic Monster Productions and Peter Safran’s The Safran Company will produce the franchise’s very first small screen project, in association with WBTV.

The series will “continue the story established in the feature films.” The Conjuring: Last Rites was billed as the final installment in the franchise universe’s “Phase One,” with the film’s massive box office success ensuring that the franchise isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

The Conjuring films are based on the real-life case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga respectively.

There are currently nine films in The Conjuring universe — The Conjuring, Annabelle, The Conjuring 2, Annabelle: Creation, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun 2, and this year’s The Conjuring: Last Rites.

The film will be released in its original Japanese language with subtitles, including restored text cards and a 4K remaster that has never before been released in North America.

Check your local listings and grab your tickets now!

We’ve also learned that Shin Godzilla will come to 4K streaming courtesy of HBO Max sometime late this year or in 2026, with a Deluxe Edition physical 4K release up for pre-order.

In Shin Godzilla, “The Prime Minister of Japan pleads with the public to remain calm after a horrific creature of tremendous size makes landfall in the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Then, it evolves into the King of all Monsters… Godzilla.”

Hideaki Anno (“Neon Genesis Evangelion” franchise) and Shinji Higuchi (Shin Ultraman) directed the film from a screenplay by Anno, with visual effects by Higuchi.

Shin Godzilla was the first Godzilla film produced by Toho since 2004’s Godzilla Final Wars and became a massive hit upon release, amassing 11 Japan Academy Prize nominations, and took home seven wins, including Best Picture and Director of the year. It became the highest-grossing Japanese Godzilla film ever; that is, until Godzilla Minus One surpassed it.

Beginning today, Final Destination Bloodlines is now streaming exclusively on HBO Max! That means that all six Final Destination films are now streaming on HBO Max.

The sixth installment in the franchise will also debut on HBO linear on August 2 at 8:00 p.m. ET. Here’s the schedule for HBO’s August 2 marathon of the Final Destination saga:

• 6:25 p.m. ET: FINAL DESTINATION 5 (2011)
• 8:00 p.m. ET: FINAL DESTINATION BLOODLINES (2025)

In Bloodlines, “Plagued by a violent recurring nightmare, college student Stefani heads home to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle – her grandmother, Iris – and save her family from the grisly demise that inevitably awaits them all.”

Final Destination Bloodlines stars Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Richard Harmon, Owen Patrick Joyner, Anna Lore, Rya Kihlstedt, Brec Bassinger, and the late horror legend Tony Todd in his final role. The film is directed by Adam Stein & Zach Lipovsky.

Sinners will make its global streaming debut exclusively on HBO Max on Friday, July 4, 2025. The film will debut on HBO linear on July 5 at 8:00pm ET.

The vampire epic is currently available on Digital and receives a physical media release on July 8.

Written and directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed), the critically acclaimed vampire horror film stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers Smoke and Stack. Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, they return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee), Jack O’Connell (Eden Lake), Wunmi Mosaku (“Loki”), Jayme Lawson (The Batman), Omar Benson Miller (“CSI: Miami”), and Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods) round out the incredible ensemble cast of Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.

The film is produced by Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Ryan Coogler. The executive producers are Ludwig Göransson, Will Greenfield, and Rebecca Cho. The score is composed by Academy Award winner Ludwig Göransson (Oppenheimer, Black Panther).

I wrote in my 4-star review, “Coogler’s first foray into horror shows a keen understanding that the key ingredient to ensuring the scares land and the suspense leaves you on edge is making you care about the characters. It makes for one of the more satisfying third acts to come along in a while, continuing through the end credits and even post-credits.”

“Music is a conduit in Sinners, making for an electric, lively first horror effort from Coogler,” the review for Bloody Disgusting continues. “Here’s hoping it’s far from the last.”

Get ready to watch Sinners this Fourth of July holiday on HBO and HBO Max.

The nine episode HBO series will serve as a prequel to Stephen King’s horror classic, and yes, Bill Skarsgård will be making his return as the iconic villain Pennywise the Clown.

“Welcome to Derry” is being positioned as a true continuation of Andy Muschietti’s IT movies, telling a brand new story that’s been pulled from the pages of King’s classic novel.

Andy Muschietti will direct multiple episodes of the original series.

“Welcome to Derry” kicks off its story in 1962 in the time leading up to the events of It: Chapter One (2017). The series is based on Mike Hanlon’s interludes from King’s book, which document “catastrophic events” from Derry, Maine’s past. Muschietti has teased that second and third seasons, if ordered by HBO, would take place in 1935 and 1908, respectively.

Taylour Paige (Zola), Jovan Adepo (“Watchmen”), Chris Chalk (“Perry Mason”), James Remar (Oppenheimer), Madeleine Stowe (Revenge) and Stephen Rider (Daredevil) will star in the upcoming series, with Bill Skarsgård returning as Pennywise the Clown.

Alixandra Fuchs (Hatfields & McCoys), Kimberly Guerrero (The English), Dorian Grey (Star Trek: Discovery), Thomas Mitchell (Gangland Undercover), BJ Harrison (Family Law), Peter Outerbridge (Saw VI), Shane Marriott (Fargo), Chad Rook (Billy the Kid), Joshua Odjick (Little Bird), Rudy Mancuso (The Flash) and Morningstar Angeline (Echo) also star.

Produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television, developed for television by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, “Welcome to Derry” is based on the novel IT by Stephen King. Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti (through their Double Dream production company), Jason Fuchs, Brad Caleb Kane, David Coatsworth, Bill Skarsgård, Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin are executive producers. Jason Fuchs, who wrote the teleplay for the first episode, and Brad Caleb Kane serve as co-showrunners on the project.

While you wait, check out a short teaser for the teaser below.

The nine episode series will serve as a prequel to Stephen King’s horror classic.

Andy Muschietti & Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs are leading the upcoming Pennywise prequel project from Warner Bros. Television. The plan? A three-season horror story.

“Welcome to Derry” will kick off its story in 1962 in the time leading up to the events of It: Chapter One (2017). From there, the planned second and third seasons will jump back in time and take place in their own distinct decades. The series is based on Mike Hanlon’s interludes from King’s book, which document “catastrophic events” from Derry, Maine’s past.

And when bad shit happens in Derry, well, Pennywise is never far behind…

If the first season of “Welcome to Derry” ends up being a hit for Max, the second season would jump back in time to 1935, while the planned third season would take place in 1908.

Look for “Welcome to Derry” on HBO as well as on HBO Max later this year.

And yes, the series will feature Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise the Clown!

“A cold case is no substitute for a warm life.”

True crime documentaries and serial killer investigations have become the latest cash cow for streaming services. Dozens of these slickly-packaged products flood streamers as they elicit shock and awe through sensationalized storytelling. That’s not to say that all of these serial killer docu-series are disposable, but there’s definitely a right and wrong way to engage in these investigative narratives. The Truth About Jim benefits from its accomplished director, Skye Borgman, who’s responsible for the gripping true crime documentary, Abducted in Plain Sight, which unpacks the complicated tale of the Broberg family, as well as Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries revival. The Truth About Jim tells a story that’s comfortably in Borgman’s wheelhouse that attempts to do something new with the true crime genre by mixing a serial killer investigation with a Who Do You Think You Are?-esque family tree journey of self-discovery. The end result, while fascinating, is a mixed bag of presumptions and emotions that’s more about the fragile survivors than the poisonous perpetrators.

What differentiates The Truth About Jim from its countless peers is that the lead investigator and guiding voice through this disturbing journey is not some hardened detective or criminal expert, but rather a fractured family member. Sierra Barter is the step-granddaughter of Jim Mordecai, a man who may-or-may-not be the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Killer — one of California’s most prolific serial killers. Barter’s drive to relitigate her past provides a powerful emotional core to this four-episode docu-series, yet her closeness to this case and her need for answers becomes a double-edged sword for this investigation. The Truth About Jim provides many details on Mordecai’s sordid past, and even more speculation on what these acts might have led to, but in the end it’s really a study of a fractured family, through retrospect.

Barter leads the charge as The Truth About Jim’s primary interviewer, which is a distinct, crucial detail that contributes to the docu-series’ original flavor and how it coalesces true crime with a family tree where each branch is more painful than the last. However, it still feels produced in many ways, because it is. A central question for any true crime docu-series of this nature is whether it’s exciting or simply exploitative. The Truth About Jim toes the line here, but never gets too gratuitous in this regard. Additionally, many modern true crime series are much longer than they need to be and suffer from egregious padding and insufficient content to flesh out each episode. Each of The Truth About Jim’s four episodes make unique arguments that contribute to a greater whole and Borgman doesn’t struggle in this regard. That being said, her past works are much stronger and one can’t help but feel that this story would work better as a feature film or two installments rather than four, which naturally prolongs this story rather than forcing Borgman to be more decisive with what’s important.

The Truth About Jim’s longer length leads to extra interviews from more ancillary figures, but it also allows the docu-series to build up the “family in repair” angle and let that breathe more. This helps showcase just how odd Mordecai was and the inappropriate nature of his relationships to better convey his character, energy, and life. The Truth About Jim takes the time to really just explain all of Mordecai’s flawed, manipulative relationships with friends and family, and how much harm he’s caused. The docu-series puts a lot of focus on the copious sorrow that he’s caused between the grooming, sexual assault, manipulation, and violence, even before there’s the possibility of murders being in the mix. Jim Mordecai is a bad person regardless, so does the rest matter? He still ruined his family’s life.

The Truth About Jim establishes an endless cycle of abuse and how Mordecai was a victim before he became a perpetrator. This pattern is sadly all-too common and the docu-series breaks down the symptoms and psychology of it all, whether it’s with Mordecai or his victims, and really creates this complex quilt of abuse. In lieu of answers, The Truth About Jim asks if closure is possible for Barter and if this family can find some semblance of peace and put all of this behind them. The docu-series is practically more interested in the victims and how they can help each other heal. The Truth About Jim shows them share hugs and hear each other instead of just capitalizing on this man’s evil. This angle makes sense since Jim Mordecai is dead, no longer out there, and was never caught for his crimes. Therefore, the logical focus is on the victims, who are around, and what they’re going through now that he’s out of the picture.

The docu-series’ first episode is pretty standard, but it’s the murder angle in the rest that really elevates The Truth About Jim into something more dangerous. Most importantly, Borgman’s filmmaking entertains both sides of Barter’s dilemma. The docu-series does seed some doubt on whether the questions being asked are inherently flawed and if the “Truth about Jim” is that he was bad, but not a killer. It’s appreciated that it considers this side of the argument rather than just blindly feeding into one perspective and ignoring anything that supports the contrary.

On some level, it’s almost as if Barter needs her investigation to bear fruit because it would explain and justify this awful man in her family and why he made things as horrible as they were. Instead, a more plausible truth is that Mordecai was just a bad person who didn’t respect women, but he also wasn’t some supervillain who held California captive with the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders. The Truth About Jim even briefly entertains the idea that Mordecai could have been the Zodiac Killer, which is by far the most outrageous and unfounded element of the docu-series. It at least addresses the incredulity of this claim.

The Truth About Jim has good intentions and charts curious ground through its possible familial connection to a notorious serial killer. Not everything in this curious case study works and it sometimes feels as if it gets lost in the weeds. However, when it connects, it’s powerful storytelling that proves that there’s so much more to an investigation than simply results and proof. This process helps Sierra Barter and her extended family heal and reclaim hope. It’s an optimistic conclusion for a story that’s so full of hate and abuse. The truth about Jim Mordecai may ultimately be inconclusive, but at least Barter and those left behind find closure and catharsis.

The Truth About Jim premieres on February 15 on Max, with all four episodes dropping at once.

The new season hails from acclaimed writer/director/showrunner/executive producer Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid), who brings her genre-bending talents to the series along with stars Jodie Foster alongside Kali Reis.

Issa López serves as showrunner and writer and directs all episodes of the new season, which centers around the bizarre disappearance of eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station. Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves and dig into the haunted truths buried under the eternal ice to solve the mystery.

Ahead of the season’s premiere, Bloody Disgusting spoke with López in a roundtable interview, where the filmmaker revealed more of what to expect from the new season.

“Night Country” initially began as a very different project for López, one that organically evolved into the new season of “True Detective.” That doesn’t mean there aren’t any connections to the previous seasons. Expect plenty of nods and Easter eggs ahead, particularly for the first season that began it all.

The filmmaker explains, “I had a very hazy general concept of something I wanted to explore, but there were no tacks in place yet. I had the world, the feeling, and the mystery of what had happened to these men, and then when HBO approached me with the question of, ‘What would you do with True Detective?’ I thought, ‘This is crazy, but this is what I would do.’ Then, the moment that I was given the True Detective of it all, it became clear that I could take the things that excited me about that first season: the two characters, the focus on the landscape behind them, the supernatural tones… and it just completely clicked with what I had.”

López continues, “What I kept about it is that there’s a bunch of winks to the first season, from characters that are related to characters in that first season to the beer they drink to the long drives where the two characters explore their own visions of the universe that are completely opposed, to some things that happen in Episode Six that you will see in time. But it is a love letter, in a way, to all the things that really worked in that first season.”

Those familiar with López’s Tigers Are Not Afraid know that her ghosts, though ominous, give a voice to the voiceless. That applies here, too, though in a much different setting and context.

The showrunner says of her ghosts this season, “Well, I have learned that we’re not alone. We walk, and we carry the people that we have lost. I believe that, and I saw that in the first True Detective, Cohle had a daughter, and we see her. I thought it was the perfect environment; this town at the end of the world where reality is coming apart at the seams, and sometimes we can peek through the fabric of things, and you can see the dead walking with you.”

Her lead characters, Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro, represent two opposites: a believer and a skeptic. But that’s not always the case as the season progresses, and the oft-stubborn Danvers is more open to the world’s possibilities than she initially lets on. When asked whether that’s an extension of herself and what it was like to write for veteran actor Jodie Foster, López shed more light on the interesting dynamics at play between her leads this season.

“It is absolutely a reflection of me,” López tells us. “I think that what makes these two characters fascinating is that one of them represents the non-believer that in moments of doubt believes, and the other one is the believer that in moments of doubt doubts. And both of them are, I think, all of us. I think that the ones of us who are believers have our moments of doubt, and the ones of us who are non-believers have our moments of faith. And it’s fascinating to see characters that dance between these two sides.

“Writing for Jodie Foster was a delight. She will always question every decision in the most wonderful way and make you think again about what you’re doing. But you also know that when you’re writing a scene that is funny or poignant or is bitter or angry, nobody’s going to be able to deliver it the way she will, and she will blow your mind every single time. Honestly, she’s spoiled me. I don’t think I can work with anybody else after her. It’s over.”

Just how far “Night Country” veers into supernatural territory, according to its showrunner, is ultimately up to the viewer.

López explains, “The thing with this series, as was the case with Tigers, is that there’s a read of the events in the series, same as with the original True Detective, by the way, that absolutely sticks to reality. There’s a real explanation for every single event in the series that does not require the presence of the supernatural. But there’s a read where every event is related to what I call a wider world, and it’s up to you, like an inkblot test, to decide which series you’re watching. Or maybe it’s mostly of one with touches of the other, but it’s your decision. So in that way, it’s a really interesting position and read that this world, this town, exists right at the edge, between here and whatever is beyond.”

“True Detective: Night Country” premieres January 14, 2024 on Max.

Season 2 picks up immediately where Season 1 ended, with the restored collection of silver scattered once more thanks to the sacrifice of rogue priest Father Vergara (Eduard Fernández). His body gets collected by a black arts practitioner who sets about prepping his body for a resurrection ritual. Cut to a year later, when we’re reintroduced to Vergara’s allies; local vet Elena (Megan Montaner) remains comatose thanks to Merche (Macarena Gómez) and Paco (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) dutifully looks after her.

The first two episodes toggle between the survivors of Pedraza’s final siege as they work to uncover the conspiracies behind it, the emerging battle between Lucifer (Manolo Santoro) and the human he fears, Christina Barber (Paul Giamatti), and Elena and Vergara’s bid to escape the harrowing bowels of Hell.

It’s the latter plot thread that provides the most intrigue and visual interest. In Alex de la Iglesia’s hands, Hell is a breathtaking Hieronymus Bosch painting brought to life to visceral effect. While Elena may rest in a vegetative state on Earth, in Hell, she’s trapped in a cage surrounded by leather-clad demons wielding sharp weapons, eager to carve out their pound of flesh. That means thrilling action-horror encounters as Vergara works to free her. The depiction of the Aristocratic rulers of Hell, its myriad of tortured souls, and the inspired demonic designs – one of the most prominent being portrayed by horror stalwart Javier Botet– helps offset the heavy weight of exposition.

The first two episodes have almost too much happening, with the spinning plates of plotting cumbersome to juggle. “30 Coins” Season 2 starts with a quick recap video to catch viewers up to speed, but the intricate mythology is so dense that it leaves a lot out. There’s no gentle easing into the continued story in Season 2; there’s far too much ground to cover in such a short order. The first two episodes make it dizzyingly clear that it will only continue to grow more expansive in scale and complex in mythology from here.

With only two episodes, it’s tough to gauge how the second season will fare. De la Iglesia and Guerricaechevarría pack so much into the narrative that it’s tough to digest, but hopefully, that smoothes out from here now that the key players and their motivations have been established. But the initial episodes do make it clear that Season 2 puts the pedal to the metal, going full throttle on an increasingly precarious battle of biblical proportions. It also raises fascinating questions and a wonderfully gnarly iteration of Hell that ensures whatever journey lies ahead, fans of “30 Coins” won’t want to miss the wild ride.

The first two episodes of “30 Coins” premiered at Fantastic Fest. The eight-episode season of the acclaimed horror series, produced by HBO Europe in Spain, will air on HBO and will be available to stream on Max on October 23, 2023.

The post “30 Coins” Fantastic Fest Review – Season 2 Plunges Straight Into the Winding Depths of Hell appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

Paul Giamatti joins the cast for “30 Coins” Season 2. Watch the trailer below.

The eight-episode season of the acclaimed horror series, produced by HBO Europe in Spain, will air on HBO and will be available to stream on Max on October 23, 2023.

Directed and co-written by acclaimed horror master Álex de la Iglesia (The Day of the Beast, Witching & Bitching, The Last Circus), Max‘s “30 Coins” takes viewers into a world where nothing is as it seems, and nobody can be trusted. De la Iglesia co-writes the series with Jorge Guerricaechevarria.

The eight-episode first season follows Father Vergara (Eduard Fernández), an exorcist, boxer, and ex-convict who is exiled by the church as the priest of a remote town in Spain. As his past and old enemies come back to haunt him, strange things begin to happen. An unlikely task force forms as Mayor Paco (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) and local vet Elena (Megan Montaner) seek the truth, while reality is distorted by a cursed coin which is at the heart of a global conspiracy.

As for what to expect in Season Two: “Most residents of Pedraza, a remote town in Spain plagued by inexplicable, demonic events, have lost their minds and are confined to a psychiatric hospital. Elena lies comatose in a Madrid hospital bed; Paco, shattered by remorse, tries to take care of her. As horror intensifies around them, our group of heroes must face a mysterious new enemy (Giamatti) – someone so perverse that even the devil fears him.”

Macarena Gómez, Pepón Nieto, Cósimo Fusco, Manolo Solo, Nuria González, Javier Bódalo, Manuel Tallafé, and Najwa Nimri also star.

Season one ended with some massive lingering questions. What happened to Father Vergara? How will the town pick up the pieces in the aftermath of one wild journey? It sure seems like things are crazier than ever in the trailer for Season 2. More importantly, what insane demonic creatures will de la Iglesia and Guerricaechevarria come up with next?

The half-hour animated series from WB Animation and Amblin TV is set in 1920s Shanghai and tells the story of how 10-year-old Sam Wing met the young Mogwai called Gizmo.

Watch the official “Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” trailer below, a fresh new look at the upcoming series that gives us a better idea of the storyline. In short, it looks like an evil villain is using the Gremlins in a sinister plot to take over the world, transforming the Mogwai into vicious beasts and allowing them to spread chaos. Think Gremlins 2… but in the open world!

The Wing family is voiced by an esteemed cast led by Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, The Mandalorian, Mulan), James Hong (Big Trouble in Little China, Blade Runner, Mulan), BD Wong (Mr. Robot, Jurassic World film franchise), and Izaac Wang.

• Fong Wing (voiced by Ming-Na Wen)—Fong Wing is Sam’s mother and a doctor of Chinese medicine. She’s resourceful, slyly funny, and fiercely protective of her family, even her frequently troublesome father.  She’ll do anything to aid and protect her son.
• Grandpa (voiced by James Hong)—A free spirit and self-proclaimed expert in Chinese myth and magic, Grandpa is the elder of the Wing family. He claims to have traveled the world on grand adventures, but nobody really believed him… until now. He alone knows the true power (and secrets) of the Mogwai and the importance of protecting them.
• Hon Wing (voiced by BD Wong)—Hon Wing is Sam’s father and the family’s calm rock. He’s never believed his father-in-law’s tales of magic and adventure. But when he and Fong become separated from Sam, he realizes the world is stranger than he thought, and that he’ll need to become braver to reunite his family.
• Sam Wing (voiced by Izaac Wang)—Sam Wing is a naïve 10-year-old boy who will one day become Mr. Wing, the mysterious shopkeep and Gizmo’s guardian in the original Gremlins films. Young Sam lives with his family in the tiny apartment behind their struggling medicine shop. Sheltered and cautious, Sam will be thrown into the adventure of a lifetime when he promises his Grandpa he’ll get Gizmo home.

“A period piece set in 1920s Shanghai, the series reveals how a 10-year-old Sam Wing – who becomes the future shop owner Mr. Wing in the 1984 movie – met the young Mogwai called Gizmo. They strike up a lifelong friendship as Wing attempts to return Gizmo to his family, encountering and sometimes battling colorful monsters and spirits from Chinese folklore.

“Meanwhile, the two and street thief Elle are pursued by a power-hungry industrialist and his growing army of evil Gremlins.”

“Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai” is produced by Amblin Television in association with Warner Bros. Animation. Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios, and Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, Presidents of Amblin Television are executive producers. Tze Chun serves as showrunner and executive producer. Brendan Hay serves as executive producer with Dan Krall serving as Supervising Producer.

Variety details, “The duo’s exact roles remain under wraps. But Variety has confirmed Stowe will appear in a recurring guest role while Rider is a series regular.”

Taylour Paige (Zola), Jovan Adepo (“Watchmen”), Chris Chalk (“Perry Mason”), and James Remar (Oppenheimer) have also been confirmed to star in the series.

Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs are on board the Pennywise prequel project from Warner Bros. Television, with Muschietti set to direct several episodes.

Variety had reported last year, “The series will begin in the 1960s in the time leading up to the events of It: Part One, the 2017 film based on the Stephen King horror novel. The story is also said to include the origin story of Pennywise the Clown.”

Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman, Ice Age: Continental Drift) and Brad Caleb Kane (“Moonhaven,” “Black Sails,” “Fringe”) will serve as co-showrunners for the prequel series.

Published in 1986, Stephen King’s massive novel was of course first turned into a mini-series in 1990, with Tim Curry playing the role later played by Bill Skarsgård in the movies.

The tale centers on the town of Derry, Maine, where a group of friends called the Losers’ Club battle Pennywise the killer clown first as kids, and then 27 years later as adults.

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced today that HBO Max will simply become Max beginning on May 23, with Discovery+ content being rolled into the new service.

Variety notes, “the company promises [there] will be an average of more than 40 new titles and TV show seasons every month” on the freshly-relaunched Max streaming service.

Variety also details, “According to the service’s website, Max will be available in three different versions. The first two plans align with the existing HBO Max pricing, and WBD said current HBO Max customers will not see their pricing change (for now) when the new service debuts. The third tier, “Max Ultimate,” expands to up to four streams and includes 4K content.”

The site notes, “Their character details have yet to be revealed.”

The trailer comes with the announcement that “30 Coins” season two will arrive in October, and the series creator confirmed via Twitter that it’s Fall debut includes the US.

Directed and co-written by acclaimed horror master Álex de la Iglesia (The Day of the Beast, Witching & Bitching, The Last Circus), HBO Max‘s “30 Coins” takes viewers into a world where nothing is as it seems, and nobody can be trusted. De la Iglesia co-writes the series with Jorge Guerricaechevarria.

Check out the new trailer below to get a peek at new demons and characters, including Paul Giamatti’s Christian Barbrow.

Christian is described as “an American business and technology billionaire, science fiction writer, science guru, and leader of a mysterious ‘Brotherhood’ that counts the world’s elite among its members. He is the ultimate disruptor, but no one knows his true intentions.”

The eight-episode first season follows Father Vergara (Eduard Fernández), an exorcist, boxer, an ex-convict who is exiled by the church as the priest of a remote town in Spain.

Season one ended with some massive lingering questions. What happened to Father Vergara? How will the town pick up the pieces in the aftermath of one wild journey? It sure seems like things are crazier than ever in the trailer. More importantly, what insane demonic creatures will de la Iglesia and Guerricaechevarria come up with next?

Bill Skarsgård of course played the iconic killer clown in Muschietti’s two movies, but he reveals in a new chat with Jake’s Takes that at this moment he’s *not* involved in the series.

“We’ll see what they come up with and what they do with it. I’m not currently involved in it,” Skarsgård explains to the show. “If someone else gets to [play Pennywise], my advice is to make it your own. Have fun with it. What I thought was so pleasurable about that character was how incredibly abstract he was. The book is really a gift that way.”

Per The Independent, in an interview with The Jonathan Ross Show, Ramsey remarked that season two of the hit show “will be a while”, but that shooting will most likely start near the end of the year. “I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next.”

As for just when season two will premiere, Ramsey say that new episodes will start airing “probably by the end of 2024, early 2025.”

Again, there has been nothing so far from series developer Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”) regarding the start date for season two’s production, nor has there been anything from Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann who wrote and executive produced the first season. Druckmann did tweet out a teaser poster for season two that alludes to what’s to come for next season.

In regards to season two, which will adapt The Last of Us Part 2, Mazin stated that there is “more than a season’s worth of television“, which seems to imply that there is a potential of additional seasons beyond the second.

In addition to Ramsey, Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian”) stars as Joel in the adaptation, which is currently streaming on HBO Max. Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate), Storm Reid, Anna Torv, Jeffrey Pierce, Nick Offerman, Merle Dandridge, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett and Con O’Neil also star in the series.

Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti (IT, IT: Chapter Two) and Jason Fuchs are on board the Pennywise prequel project from Warner Bros. Television, THR also notes today. “Andy Muschietti will direct multiple episodes of the series, including the first episode.”

“As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s IT until the thick paperback fell to pieces,” the Muschiettis said in a statement. “IT is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our IT movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel, in all its heart, humor, humanity and horror.”

“I’m excited that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted city, is continuing, and I’m glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara,” Stephen King said. “Red balloons all around!”

“To be able to return to the world of my all-time favorite horror novel and help build upon the singularly brilliant cinematic universe created by Andy and Barbara is more than the opportunity of a lifetime, it’s a dream come true — or, maybe more appropriately, a nightmare,” Fuchs said.

“We are thrilled to continue this iconic franchise with the brilliant Andy and Barbara Muschietti, Jason Fuchs and Brad Caleb Kane,” said Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max. “This prequel will expand the IT storytelling canvas and bring fans deeper into the terrifying, mesmerizing town of Derry.”

Published in 1986, Stephen King’s massive novel was of course first turned into a mini-series in 1990, with Tim Curry playing the role later played by Bill Skarsgård in the movies.

While “The Last of Us” debuted with 4.7 million day-of viewers for its premiere episode last week, this past Sunday night’s second episode pulled in a whopping 5.7 million viewers!

Geoff Keighley (The Game Awards) notes on Twitter, “This marks the largest week 2 audience growth for an HBO Original drama series in the history of the network.”

This number represents the Sunday night total between HBO and HBO Max, and Sunday night viewership only represents 20%-40% of a show’s total gross audience per episode.

For example, the premiere episode is currently up to 18 million total viewers!

For the sake of comparison, AMC’s “The Walking Dead” posted similar live viewer numbers in its debut season, with Season 1 viewership ranging from 4.71 million to a high of 5.97 million.

Needless to say, it’s VERY likely that we’ll be getting a second season of “The Last of Us” in the near future. From what we gather, the plan is for Season 2 to adapt the second game.

HBO’s “The Last of Us” takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.

Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian”) is starring in the series as Joel and Bella Ramsey (“Game of Thrones”) is playing Ellie. Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate) is playing Tommy, the brother of Pascal’s Joel. Storm Reid, Anna Torv, Jeffrey Pierce, Nick Offerman, Merle Dandridge, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett and Con O’Neil will also star in the series.

Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl”) developed the series for HBO, and worked directly alongside Neil Druckmann to write and executive produce the small screen adaptation.
