Hulu previews this week, “The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Vrach Frankenshteyn reimagines creator and director Chris Carter’s original vision in this all-new director’s cut.”

The new cut was first teased in an interview with director Chris Carter on the Fail Better With David Duchovny podcast from last year, where he promised a much scarier movie.

“Now I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended to make,” Carter explained. “It’s not just doing a Director’s Cut to do a Director’s Cut. It’s really kind of bringing to life something that for me was on the page and never got to the screen.“

“We set out to make a real-life Frankenstein movie, and due to a variety of factors, our Frankenstein never completely left the operating room,” Carter tells Entertainment Weekly in a new interview this week. “A chance to apply the electrodes again was a special thrill.”

Years after walking away from the FBI, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dr. Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are pulled back from the shadows when a federal agent vanishes without a trace. In a case you’d never see on TV, their only lead is a disgraced, defrocked priest claiming to have horrific psychic visions of the crime. Forced to confront the ghosts of their past, the partners must navigate a chilling winter landscape and an even darker human monstrosity. The truth of these crimes is out there somewhere… and it will take Mulder and Scully to find it.

It’s been nearly twenty years since the release of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, with the 2008 movie serving as the second and last feature film based on the series.

The idea was for The X-Files: I Want to Believe to essentially be a feature length monster-of-the-week tale, and it came along ten years after the original X-Files movie. Unfortunately, while 1998’s movie scared up $189 million at the global box office, I Want to Believe ended its run with just $69 million, and the franchise later returned to the small screen in its wake.

Almost 20 years later, will the film finally be redeemed? We’ll find out on August 14.

Patel confirmed the news in a chat with The Direct, while reiterating that he and Deadwyler play new characters.

“I don’t want to say anything that’s going to get me disappeared. Needless to say, myself and Danielle Deadwyler are playing completely new characters, and we just wrapped on the pilot. If we get to do more… we’ll see where we go from there,” Patel said.

That last sentence is noteworthy, as Patel is reminding that Hulu has only ordered the pilot so far. A full series order has yet to be greenlit. 

It’s a good reminder, considering that Hulu also ordered a pilot for the “Buffy: New Sunnydale” reboot that was filmed and delivered earlier this year, only for the streamer to send shockwaves when it opted not to move forward with the series.

As for “The X-Files” pilot, Sinners filmmaker Ryan Coogler writes and directs the pilot. Jennifer Yale (“The Copenhagen Test”) serves as showrunner.

Himesh Patel and Danielle Deadwyler play two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena.

Patel and Deadwyler previously co-starred together on “Station Eleven.”

Other actors who have signed on for guest roles include Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand, and Sofia Grace Clifton.

“The X-Files” originally ran for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002, with two additional seasons arriving in 2016 and 2018. 218 episodes were produced in total, along with two feature films: 1998’s The X-Files: Fight the Future and 2008’s The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

Kerry Washington (Django Unchained, Wake Up Dead Man) is set to star and executive produce.

Chris Luccy (“A Million Little Things”) is penning the adaptation, with McG (Terminator Salvation, The Babysitter) on board to direct.

In the series, “After taking the life of a disturbed man in the line of duty, Detective Elise Sutton (Washington) – a devoted wife, loving mother, and cold case specialist — reels from the guilt of her actions.

“To convince herself that she did the right thing, she makes contact with a mysterious man that she saved that day, only to discover that he’s not at all what he seems. She’s soon caught in a dangerous game of cat and mouse, following the clues he leaves for her and realizing that the only person who can stop him… is her.”

20th Television and Kapital Entertainment are behind the show, with Walker producing. Executive producers include Luccy; Washington & Pilar Sivone for Simpson Street; McG, Mary Viola & Corey Marsh for Wonderland Sound and Vision; and Aaron Kaplan for Kapital Entertainment.

Released in 2023 by Blackstone Publishing, What Remains is described as a “dark, twisty, and highly addictive psychological thriller” in the vein of The Woman in the Window and The Silent Patient.

Rachel McAdams (Doctor Strange) and Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) star in the darkly comedic survival thriller as two colleagues who find themselves stranded on a deserted island after they are the sole survivors of a plane crash.

They must overcome past grievances and work together to survive, but ultimately, it is an unsettling and darkly humorous battle of wills and wits to make it out alive.

Edyll Ismail (“La Brea”), Dennis Haysbert (“24”), Xavier Samuel (The Loves Ones), Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians), Thaneth Warakulnukroh (“Thai Cave Rescue”), and Emma Raimi (Sam Raimi’s daughter) round out the cast.

Damian Shannon & Mark Swift (Freddy vs. Jason, Friday the 13th) penned the script. Danny Elfman (Spider-Man, Beetlejuice) composed the score.

Raimi produces alongside Zainab Azizi (65, Don’t Move) for Raimi Productions, with JJ Hook (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Bumblebee) serving as executive producer.

“Send Help is full of vibrant personality, packed with all of Raimi’s signatures,” Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “It’s a raucous, goopy good time at the movies.”

Available now on Digital and physical media, Send Help earned Raimi his first R rating in 25 years for “strong/bloody violence and language.”

“Paradise” will indeed be returning for a third season at Hulu, and Deadline reports today that small screen veteran Julianna Margulies (“ER”) has joined the cast of Season 3.

“Details regarding who Margulies will play and the plot of the third season are under wraps,” Deadline notes. The Emmy winner is the latest high profile actress to come on board Hulu’s “Paradise,” with Shailene Woodley joining the series for its second season.

While perhaps best known for her role in “ER,” Julianna Margulies has made a few stops in the horror genre over the years. She appeared in both Ghost Ship and Snakes on a Plane, while more recently she’s starred in the TV shows “Dietland” and “The Morning Show.”

Sterling K. Brown leads the cast of “Paradise,” which was created by Dan Fogelman.

The title of the series refers to a underground bunker where humanity’s survivors have been living after a doomsday event ravaged the planet, and we won’t spoil anything further for those who haven’t yet checked it out. Both seasons are now streaming on Hulu and Disney+, and I highly recommend you dive in and use this time between seasons to play catch-up.

How many people are watching, you might be wondering?

Deadline notes in today’s report, “The Season 2 finale (March 30) [of “Paradise”] scored 4.3 million views globally in three days across Disney+ and Hulu, the company said. That’s up 35% over the premiere to a season-best audience for the sci-fi series.”

Alternatively, “Precious Flowers,” The Testaments’ first episode, begins with orderly visuals of an elaborate dollhouse amidst greater opulence. There’s a sense of order, control, acceptance – and even pride – that’s present here that’s completely absent in the introduction to The Handmaid’s Tale’s world. The Testaments begins a little more than four years after The Handmaid’s Tale’s final episode, yet it’s initially difficult to recognize that they’re even a part of the same universe due to the extreme tonal shift at hand.

It was a little less than a decade ago when The Handmaid’s Tale first premiered in 2017, yet there is a shocking degree of parallels between 2017 and 2026. Horror, however, was in a different place, and there was a greater appetite for vicious films like Jigsaw, Gerald’s Game, Downrange, and Victor Crowley. The world has become much more desensitized to carnage and bloodshed, as if it’s just an everyday nuisance that needs to be compartmentalized. Accordingly, The Testaments’ world isn’t any less horrendous than what was on display in The Handmaid’s Tale. It’s just become commodified to such an extent that it no longer even reads as trauma. It’s Stockholm Syndrome to the nth degree.

The Handmaid’s Tale was such a splash of cold water to the face that got the audience’s attention because of its rampant sexual assault, twisted and torturous body horror, genital mutilation, and an oppressive government that makes Escape from New York’s political cabinet look rational. It presents a hellish world where its horrors don’t even have to hide in plain sight because there’s nothing to hide from. 

The Handsmaid’s Tale‘s YA-sequel unlocks an insidious dollhouse of horror

Curiously, The Testaments reads as a YA-coded subversion of The Handmaid’s Tale’s norm, and in many ways it is. It also tells a story that’s even more insidious than its predecessor by normalizing and sugar-coating these horrors through a younger point of view. The Testaments presents its “opportunities” as aspirational inevitabilities that its younger cast of characters has been born into. Many of them have never even known an alternative way of life, whereas The Handmaid’s Tale is all about the anguish of that schism and how to return to the status quo. Gilead is the status quo in The Testaments.  

The Testaments is a coming-of-age drama that follows a new generation of women in Gilead, led by Agnes (Chase Infiniti) and Daisy (Lucy Halliday), two residents with very different backgrounds who share an unexpected connection. Agnes and Daisy make their way through an elite prep school that’s designed to prime them for their obedient futures as wives. It’s fascinating to see Handmaid’s Tale’s aggressive nihilism receive a tie-dyed YA makeover that even plays into the burgeoning “micro-drama” space.

It’s a smart angle that rejuvenates The Handmaid’s Tale’s brand, which was admittedly flailing after six seasons. The Testaments draws in a completely new audience, while it still does enough to appeal to the original Handmaid’s Tale crowd. The same breed of relationship drama still exists, yet it’s impossibly more corrupted in The Testaments. These arranged marriages and prescribed fealty are something that Gilead’s youth are fighting rather than rebelling against. It’s their idea of a love story. The Testaments often feels more like a Freeform teen drama than a Hulu prestige piece. Even the series’ omnipresent voiceover echoes June’s use of this device in The Handmaid’s Tale, yet it’s turned into egregious, unnecessary narration that evokes the egregious internal monologues found in young-adult fare.

It’s no coincidence that The Testaments repeatedly turns to its introductory dollhouse imagery. It’s a convenient metaphor that displays the conditional happiness and oppressive roles that pull the strings in Gilead. Agnes and Daisy are drowning in a sea of poison, yet The Testaments deceives its victims through overpowering imagery of beautiful pastries, pastel desserts, and ornate tea parties. There’s even a “prom episode” that adds a Bridgerton quality to this horrifying story and pretends that it’s a fairy tale. At one point, a character remarks, “Gilead was so beautiful I could sometimes forget where I was.” The characters focus on dance steps, pomp and circumstance, and fancy pageantry that masks the abuse. It’s an Instagram filter of normalcy over subjugation and ignorance. 

The Testaments‘ hidden mask of cruelty cuts deeper

Even the episode titles in The Testaments reflect a sanitized and repressed nature that focuses on beautiful lies and artifice, rather than the truth. Episodes have titles like “Precious Flowers,” “Perfect Teeth,” and “Green Tea,” which all hide the true horrors that lurk beneath these ideas and what they really represent. Alternatively, The Handmaid’s Tale would have episodes with titles like “Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum,” “Unwomen,” and “Jezebels.” The girls in The Testaments are so oblivious to life’s true dangers that Agnes has her own Little Mermaid moment in which she misinterprets a crude crack pipe for something beautiful.

The most chilling example of The Testaments’ indoctrinated delusion involves the young girls’ highly stylized and color-coded outfits that delineate their various stages and roles. It’s treated like a fun outfit to coordinate and accessorize with as yet another aspect of this carefully coordinated lifestyle. It’s a disturbing exercise that ostensibly turns all these girls into targets, and yet it’s treated like haute couture. The whole “Plum” concept that labels girls who have yet to have their periods is so simple, yet one of the most vile things that the franchise has ever done. This disgusting idea is normalized in such a chilling manner. It turns a twisted tool that’s used to mark young, vulnerable women into a fashion statement. 

Girls are literally crying because they haven’t had their periods, and they want to be paired off with Commanders who are twice their age. It’s presented as a privilege that’s reinforced through a reprehensible cult mentality to characters who are too young to know any better. The whole Plum ritual is aspirational, and those who buck this trend are destined to become outcasts. The horror that’s so expertly weaponized in The Testaments is more akin to The Stepford Wives, Subservience, or even Village of the Damned and Dogtooth, rather than a more blunt and brutal examination of gender and status, like in Hostel, Society, or Revenge. 

The Testaments has even created an ecosystem where women from outside of Gilead are targeted by “Pearl Girls” and drawn into a world where “women still have value.” They co-opt and twist this subjugated sex slave narrative into a world where women are valued, cared for, and given a clear purpose. It’s The Testaments’ version of embracing a “trad wife” lifestyle, albeit with a lot more carnage and cruelty. Funnily enough, the one Testaments episode that ditches its stylized sanitation is a flashback entry that’s set pre-Handmaid’s Tale. It’s also the season’s most gratuitous and brutal episode. It’s outwardly terrifying, and the episode that feels the most like a traditional horror movie.

Gilead’s dystopian system still inspires violence

The Testaments masquerades many of its horrors, but the series isn’t completely devoid of violence. There’s a toxic version of girl power that’s exploited throughout the series and channeled into a fiery fury towards men. To be clear, Gilead’s system is still deeply broken. The Testaments is just very particular about how its most overt punishments are done to men, rather than building terror from their freedom to abuse women. This is not a world where violence is erased. It’s just powerfully focused to elicit a very specific response. This illusion of control and agency creates even greater horrors that are interwoven into these young girls’ identities.

The sheer jubilation that Gilead’s youth experience during a man’s dismemberment speaks to the bloodthirsty and rabid tendencies that are bubbling under the surface of these seemingly “proper women.” They’re living embodiments of Gilead’s toxic veneer of compliance. There’s a level of reverence and awe in these girls’ reactions that’s comparable to the Sawyer family watching a butchering session in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Both are governed by self-imposed norms that argue for a simpler, more honest existence. 

It’s fascinating to see both The Testaments and Emerald Fennel’s Wuthering Heights wrestle with the same themes of conditioned normalcy and women’s relationship and curiosity with pain, violence, and death. Surprisingly, The Testaments seems to have more to say on this front as Agnes and Daisy head further down Gilead’s rabbit hole. Daisy has some frame of reference for why all this isn’t normal. Agnes faces a much more challenging struggle ahead that involves liberation from Gilead, but also a complete reeducation on how to exist. 

Agnes’ psychological scars run much deeper than any mutilation wound from The Handmaid’s Tale. She’s so busy getting excited over marriage and celebrating puberty that she doesn’t even know that she’s trapped in a horror movie. Playing with dolls may be more pleasant than kicking and screaming through the woods, but the results can be so much worse. 

The Testaments’ first three episodes are available on Disney+ and Hulu, with new episodes releasing weekly.

Son Ye-jin (“Crash Landing on You”), Park Hee-soon (“Squid Game”), Lee Sung-min (The Spy Gone North), Yeom Hye-ran (“The Glory”), Cha Seung-won (Night in Paradise), and Yoo Yeon-seok (“When the Phone Rings”) also star.

Chan-wook co-wrote the script with Lee Kyoung-mi, Jahye Lee (Uprising) and Don McKellar (Blindness), based on Donald E. Westlake‘s 1997 novel The Ax.

The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival and went on to play the Toronto International Film Festival, Beyond Fest, New York Film Festival, Sitges Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, and more.

“Park Chan-wook’s deceptively simple comedy proves anything but,” Meagan Navarro wrote in her review out of TIFF. “It makes for a disarming and almost whimsical experience that wallops you hard with a sucker punch when you least expect it.”

No Other Choice was selected as the South Korean entry for the Best International Feature Film category for the 98th Academy Awards.

Set in the quiet of Italy’s Lake Garda, a private island hosts the most exclusive wedding of the year between Leopoldo Vigevani, heir to one of the country’s richest and most powerful families, and influencer Eva Bianchi.

When a lifeless body is found on the beach, the island turns into a trap from which no one can escape.

The series will film in Italy, with The Apartment (Bones and All, Challengers) producing.

Drawing comparisons to Agatha Christie, Murder on Lake Garda was published in 2024 by Century/Penguin and became a Sunday Times bestseller.

Pizza Movie follows a shy college student and his reckless roommate who set out on a simple mission to grab pizza. After a strange dose of a mind-bending experimental drug, they’re thrust into a chaotic night of absurd encounters, wild hallucinations, and unexpected revelations that could change their lives forever.

Jack Martin, Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Marcus Scribner, Caleb Hearon, Sarah Sherman, Justin Cooley, Kevin Matthew Reyes, Adam Herschman, and Lucas Zelnick round out the cast.

“Saturday Night Live” alumni Nick Kocher & Brian McElhaney write and direct. The duo, collectively known as BriTANicK, also penned the upcoming action comedy thriller Over Your Dead Body, out April 24.

Pizza Movie is produced by Jeremy Garelick & Will Phelps of American High, Billy Rosenberg of All Things Comedy, Jason Zaro, Molle DeBartolo, and Max Butler. Matarazzo receives an executive producer credit.

The latest installment in the Predator saga started streaming last week, amassing nearly 9 million global views in its first five days on Hulu and Disney+, Deadline reports.

All nine films in the Predator franchise are now on Hulu, along with 15 new videos in the Predator Creators Collection, amassing over 300 million hours streamed.

Predator: Badlands hit theaters in November and went on to become the franchise’s highest-grossing entry with $184.5 million worldwide.

Dan Trachtenberg (Prey, 10 Cloverfield Lane) directs from a script written by Patrick Aison (Prey) and Brian Duffield (Love and Monsters).

Set in the future on a remote planet, a young Predator (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), outcast from his clan, finds an unlikely ally in Thia (Elle Fanning) and embarks on a treacherous journey in search of the ultimate adversary.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “Trachtenberg and his talented team craft a stunning adventure epic with winsome characters, action, and creatures, but one that’s so drastically different that it’s polarizing.”

The highest-grossing entry in the franchise’s 38-year history, Predator: Badlands earned $184.5 million worldwide, surpassing the previous record holder, Alien vs. Predator ($177.4M).

Keith David, Jimmy Tatro, Stephen Root, Lewis Tan, Ben Schwartz, Emily Hampshire, and Arturo Castro round out the cast.

The crew includes cinematographer Larry Fong (300, Watchmen), editor Tim Squyres (Life of Pi, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), and composer Joseph Trapanese (“The Witcher,” Oblivion).

Andrew Lazar (American Sniper) produces, with Richard Middleton (The Artist) and Vanessa Humphrey as executive producers.

But now that “Welcome to Derry” is proving itself to be a massive hit for HBO Max, Netflix will bring both seasons of Hulu’s “Castle Rock” to their streaming service this holiday season.

“Castle Rock” arrives on Netflix beginning December 16, 2025.

Based on Stephen King lore, locations, and characters, the series premiered back in 2018 with a debut season centered on Bill Skarsgård‘s “The Kid,” a mysterious inmate at Shawshank State Penitentiary. The superior second season of the series more directly played with King storylines and characters, telling the origin story of Misery villain Annie Wilkes (Lizzy Caplan).

As I wrote here on Bloody Disgusting back in 2019, “The second season was considerably more satisfying than the first, and the handling of Annie Wilkes’ storyline brought the show to heights that it was never quite able to reach in season one. It’s as if the creators have cracked the code and figured out what kinds of stories the show ought to be telling, and that makes the future possibilities both endless and incredibly exciting for the King fans watching.”

What I didn’t know at the time, of course, was that “Castle Rock” would not be returning for a third season. This despite the show’s first season ending with a tease that we’d someday see more of Jane Levy (Evil Dead) as Jackie Torrance, the niece of Jack Torrance!

“Castle Rock” was developed by Sam Shaw & Dustin Thomason, and produced by J.J Abrams.

Predator (1987)

Dutch, a soldier of fortune, is hired by the U.S. government to secretly rescue a group of politicians trapped in Guatemala. That’s the plot of both the 1992 movie The Hand That Rocks The Cradle, as well as the new 2025 Hulu remake. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the Annabella Sciorra role and Maika Monroe in the Rebecca De Mornay role, the new film follows an affluent couple living in LA with their two children, daughter Emma (Mileiah Vega) and baby Josie (Nora Contreras and Lola Contreras).

Early in the film, there’s some vague dialogue between Caitlin Morales (Winstead) and her husband Miguel (Raúl Castillo) about her troubles following Emma’s birth, hinting at issues of depression and paranoia. Initially, this suggests that screenwriter Micah Bloomberg is going to lean into the hysterical woman trope, so it’s a testament to The Hand That Rocks The Cradle that Caitlin is presented, for the most part, as a capable, albeit overwhelmed, mother and lawyer.

The film opens with a scene of Caitlin meeting and advising Polly (Monroe) at a pro bono Tenants’ Rights Event. Outside in her car, Caitlin goes into labor, and the film jumps ahead to a point when Caitlin is back on her feet, but struggling. A near miss involving Chekhov’s stop sign proves that she needs a little extra help, and so, enter Polly, first as a babysitter and eventually as the live-in au pair.

Bloomberg’s screenplay does a solid job of introducing the cracks in the Morales family early on. There are intimacy issues between husband and wife (which can be expected after a newborn), and Emma is a willful child who isn’t afraid to scream at her mother. Though Caitlin and Miguel’s relationship is supportive and features plenty of open communication, there’s also a suggestion that Caitlin’s rigid approach to child rearing, as well as her past mental health issues, are cause for concern for Miguel.

Obviously, these are all fissures for Polly to exploit when she inserts herself into the family’s life and begins to systematically dismantle their relationships. Polly swaps out Caitlin’s depression meds, feeds Emma sugar, and, at one point, she even poisons the stew at a dinner party.

Audiences expecting sequences on par with the original film’s greenhouse sequence should temper their expectations, especially if the goal is to see Maika go off the rails. That’s because, unlike the original, which introduced De Mornay’s Peyton in a sympathetic light before quickly turning her into a full-blown villain, Polly isn’t a straightforward monster. The remake of The Hand That Rocks The Cradle is a much more grounded affair because the film has a legitimate interest in the complicated relationship between Caitlin and Polly.

As the housewife slowly begins to peel away the layers of Polly’s deception, aided by her work husband, Stewart (Martin Starr), it’s revealed that Polly has her own traumatic backstory. Despite a heel turn featuring explicit violence around two-thirds through the film and a climax featuring the women’s explosive face-off, most of the film positions Caitlin and Polly as two-sides of the same socio-economic coin. Caitlin happened to come out somewhat unscathed and well-off, whereas Polly has been struggling all of her life.

Polly’s envy of Caitlin’s life extends beyond mere coveting, though. It’s also queer.

To be clear, this isn’t mere coding; it’s canonical in the text. From Caitlin’s confession that she was dating a woman before she met Miguel to multiple instances where the women touch, exchange clothes and mimic each other’s hairstyles to a voyeuristic sequence when Caitlin spies on a sexual encounter between Polly and Amelia (Yvette Lu), it is evident that beneath the jealously, deception, and lies, there’s also an undeniable level of attraction between Caitlin and Polly.

Cinematographer Jo Willems and director Michelle Garza Cervera (who knows a thing or two about motherhood and queerness, as evidenced by Huesera: The Bone Woman) shoot the film in soft focus, emphasizing the cool blue, brown, and grey tones of the Morales’ incredible wooden and glass house. Much of the film has a slight hazy blur on the periphery of the frame, and – in several scenes – there’s a visual effect akin to witnessing the action through the bottom of a glass. This helps to reinforce both the cold and anti-septic “perfect life” façade that Caitlin has cultivated, but also her wavering grip on reality.

Whereas the original film was a conventional warning to white middle-income audiences about opening your home to outsiders, 2025’s The Hand That Rocks The Cradle is a grounded contemplation of motherhood, marriage, and female relationships.

Although the film ultimately reaches a slightly conventional violent apex in the last act, it never loses its interest in the humanity of its female leads. Audiences hoping for a catty smackdown between Winstead and Monroe may find this low-key approach a little underwhelming, but Cervera and Bloomberg have actually crafted something more interesting and contemporary: a well-shot thriller that values the flawed complexity of its characters.

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, which will begin streaming on October 22, is officially rated “R” for “some strong/bloody violence, sexual content and language.”

Raúl Castillo, Martin Starr, Mileiah Vega, Riki Lindhome, and Shannon Cochran also star.

The Hand That Rocks the Cradle is written by Micah Bloomberg based on a screenplay by Amanda Silver. The producers are Michael Schaefer, Mike LaRocca, and Ted Field, and the executive producers are Michael Napoliello, Maria Frisk, and Seth William Meier.

“The studio gave me all the chances to recreate the whole thing and build a new story, new characters, with its own heart. I think that was the best way to honor the original, not try to redo it,” Michelle Garza Cervera told PEOPLE. “We build a whole different kind of thriller.”

Halloween episodes are a tried and true television tradition that has thankfully only grown more creative over time. They’re a great opportunity for characters to try on new skins – figuratively and literally – during a time when it can often feel like reality’s rules don’t apply. Family Guy is no stranger to Halloween episodes, yet they’re hardly something that the series has run into the ground. Family Guy’s first Halloween episode didn’t occur until the show’s ninth season, and it’s been fairly selective on that front ever since. Corporate synergy and Hulu holiday specials have given Family Guy the chance to embrace Halloween in new ways. While the series is still finding its footing with how it approaches these specials, “A Little Fright Music” is a strong, silly Halloween episode that’s a great apéritif for this year’s spooky season. It turns to music and mischief to get to the very core of the holiday.

Brian and Stewie were front and center in Family Guy’s previous Halloween special, and “A Little Fright Music” unites this duo over a very relatable annoyance. There’s plenty that Brian and Stewie love about Halloween, yet they’ve developed a growing disdain for the holiday’s lackluster song catalogue. Trick-or-treaters have been forced to accept “The Monster Mash” as Halloween’s anthem. Disappointed with the state of Halloween’s musical affairs, Brian and Stewie pledge to craft the ultimate Halloween song instead of waiting for the holiday to create one on its own. 

This is a small-scale plot in concept, but the perfect type of story that has infinite room to grow as these characters get lost in the creative process. This idea could play out with so many potential outcomes that are all dependent on which characters are involved in the carol creation. Stewie and Brian are certainly the most satisfying duo to embark on this endeavor, which results in an entertaining episode that’s as much a love letter to everyone’s favorite autumnal holiday as it is a celebration of Brian and Stewie. It’s a playful story that explores the endless creativity that Halloween inspires, rather than an episode that opts for scares and suspense (although there’s a little of that, too). “A Little Fright Music” pursues an angle that represents an equally important part of the holiday that’s helped Halloween become a touching time for new traditions and personalized passion, regardless of age.

There’s plenty of fun to be had with the dissonance that’s created between Stewie and Brian as they get deeper in this project. Stewie gets lost in every aspect of song production except the song itself, while Brian loses his patience and grows to regret this creative collaboration. Curiously, there are quite a few sitcoms that attempt to create new musical anthems for holidays, albeit typically not with Halloween. That being said, the same principles are in place, and this turns into one of the more entertaining examples where two stubborn, creative forces attempt to work together and create something. There’s a moment in which Brian uses the term “bon mot” as an early indication of the turbulence that these two will have in their musical endeavor. While this is hardly a reference to Frasier, the dynamic that’s shared between Stewie and Brian here is very akin to Frasier and Niles and how they would go about such a pursuit. It’s a successful tone that helps both characters shine in their own ways, rather than pitting them against each other and punching down with them.

Brian and Stewie’s musical mission becomes a light-hearted balance for the rest of the episode’s exploits. Chris finds himself looking inward when he experiences malaise as a teenager who longs to continue trick-or-treating, while his older age suggests that he’s now banished to hand out candy at home with the rest of the joyless adults. Family Guy has something compelling to say with all this, especially once it turns into an opportunity for Chris to “become a man” with Peter. This – evidently – means learning how to comfortably lie to the women in his life while he does what he wants.

“A Little Fright Music” heads into a ludicrous third act that’s rich in car crashes, urban legends, and masked killers. It’s a heightened trope-filled turn of events, but it at least finds a way to justify all this and make sense of it all, rather than actual serial killers being in pursuit of Peter, Chris, and company. These holiday machinations push Lois to go all “get off my lawn” when it comes to Halloween’s mutation over the years, as it’s turned into yet another extended excuse for adults to regress and commandeer the holiday away from children. What’s supposed to be fun escapism becomes an opportunity for bragging rights, class disparity, and ego boosts. Lois is certainly a fitting Halloween Grinch, but this doesn’t necessarily become a storyline of its own. Lois’ irritation works as an obstacle to Peter and Chris’ pursuits. Her initially toxic perspective blossoms over the course of the episode until it becomes an unlikely inspiration to the rest of the cast, rather than something that impedes their holiday joy.

Chris and Peter’s night on the town is an innocuous enough story that reinforces the episode’s grander themes of Halloween’s societal expectations and how this is often bifurcated between kids and adults; creative freedom over the prison of monotony. In this sense, it’s appreciated that Family Guy attempts to say something a little deeper with this holiday. It’s the right move for a show that’s committed itself to multiple Hulu holiday specials at this point, and so it better have something about Halloween that goes beyond a surface level analysis. Family Guy’s previous Halloween special, “Peter, Peter, Pumpkin Cheater,” was much less successful because it indulged in hollow guest stars and an exaggerated storyline that strayed too close from home. “A Little Fright Music” finds a better balance that turns this into a significantly stronger Halloween special and a better Family Guy episode in general.

There’s also plenty to appreciate in “A Little Fright Music” outside of the core storytelling and character development. The episode’s non sequiturs land, for the most part, while the cutaway jokes are a cut above the norm. There’s a brilliant riff on “Who’s on First?” that’s filtered through Abbott Elementary that genuinely had me laughing. Another gag takes a ridiculous jab at FOX Animation Domination synergy through a Grimsburg shout-out. This is all accompanied by decent pacing and an episode that doesn’t waste time. “A Little Fright Music” isn’t anything revelatory, but it accomplishes what it sets out to do in this Halloween showcase.

Family Guy does solid work in this holiday installment. However, episodes that revolve so heavily around the debut of a big song – while admirable – are often set up to fail in some respects. “A Little Fright Music“ makes a decent argument that there aren’t any definitive Halloween songs. Granted, Halloween is not as song-heavy a holiday as Christmas, but the point still stands. An episode of this nature would really hammer its point in if Brian and Stewie’s song legitimately caught on in the real world and turned into a seasonal hit. Now, such a feat is nearly impossible, and something with even the cultural pull and legacy of Rick and Morty, The Simpsons, and South Park would struggle to pull this off. This doesn’t turn “A Little Fright Music“ into a failure by any means, but it does just underscore how an episode like this could really succeed on a meta level under the right circumstances. Family Guy doesn’t attempt anything nearly as lofty in “A Little Fright Music,“ but that’s more than okay. This is a Halloween special that features far more treats than tricks. Brian and Stewie’s song is unlikely to become an evergreen Halloween hit, but this Family Guy episode might become a part of many audiences’ annual Halloween watch list.

In the new Halloween special, “A Little Fright Music,” Brian and Stewie realize there is a shortage of quality Halloween songs, so they set out to write a hit, and Peter and the guys discover that lying about trick or treating can have deadly consequences.

The episode will premiere Monday, October 6 only on Hulu.

Executive Producers/Showrunners Rich Appel & Alec Sulkin joke, “One day in the writers room we realized that no animated show had ever done a Halloween special — besides The Simpsons‘ Treehouse of Horrors I through XXXIV — so we thought, let’s be the XXXVth!”

“We also realized that while everyone had a favorite Christmas song, and a ton to pick from, nobody really had a favorite Halloween song,” the duo’s statement to IGN continues. “And we thought maybe we could actually be the first there. Plus, given the very limited competition, ours would have a better chance becoming everyone’s favorite.”

“A Little Fright Music” is part of this year’s “Huluween” celebration from Hulu.

Perkins’ adaptation of Stephen King’s short story from 1985’s Skeleton Crew, now streaming on Hulu, uses its source material as a loose framework for a Final Destination-like, gory romp filled with a nonstop onslaught of over-the-top, elaborate deaths. 

The plot centers around twin brothers who find a mysterious wind-up monkey, triggering a series of outrageous deaths that will tear their family apart. When the Monkey’s arm winds up, get ready; a brutal death occurs whenever the cursed object bangs his toy drum. It’s always at random, too. Per the wind-up toy’s box, it is “like life,“ after all.

And in this movie, death comes fast and furious in morbidly funny fashion. So much so that there are over two dozen gruesome demises packed into The Monkey’s runtime, all highlighting the gallows’ humor with gore. However, many of them are shown in fleeting montages or featured in the background, especially in the film’s final act when the cursed object’s reign of terror unleashes chaos. 

Now that The Monkey is on streaming, we’re highlighting six of the horror-comedy’s standout kills beyond the quick montage and background deaths. Spoilers ahead, of course…

6) Hibachi Grill Decapitation

The first time Hal Shelburne (Christian Convery) winds up the Monkey, he doesn’t know what it does or what’s to come. That the audience does means a suspenseful build-up as Hal and his twin brother Bill (also Convery) get treated to dinner by their babysitter, Annie (Danica Dreyer), at a Hibachi restaurant. The chef at the trio’s tableside grill strikes up a flirtation with Annie while attempting to impress with cooking flair. It spectacularly backfires; a quick flip of the wrist with a sharp spatula winds up decapitating the babysitter instead. While The Monkey quickly reveals itself to be rather fond of decapitations, Annie’s freak accident is the twin brothers’ first tangible brush with death. More noticeably, the babysitter’s full name, revealed at her funeral service, makes for an amusing joke in itself: Annie Wilkes, as in Misery‘s Annie Wilkes.

5) Uncle Chip Mince Meat 

Of the deaths on this list, Uncle Chip’s is the briefest for good reason. It’s arguably the goriest of the bunch and only shown in quick flashes. After Hal and Bill’s mom dies from an aneurysm courtesy of the monkey, they’re taken in by their swinging Uncle Chip (Osgood Perkins) and Aunt Ida (Sarah Levy) in Casco, Maine. Somehow, the wind-up monkey finds its way to them and promptly triggers another freak accident. This time it claims Uncle Chip, who was decimated off-screen by a horse stampede in his sleeping bag while on a camping trip, but Perkins does give a gag-worthy look at the mince meat aftermath that earns a spot here. 

4) Wasp Face Ricky

When Bill finally connects the dots on the Monkey’s M.O. as an adult, he hires Casco local Ricky (Rohan Campbell) to find and retrieve it so he can enact vengeance upon his brother. Ricky becomes obsessed with the wind-up toy, holding Hal and his son Petey (Colin O’Brien) at gunpoint under Bill’s orders. Just before the final confrontation between estranged brothers, the monkey bangs his drum once again, sentencing Ricky to an outlandish demise courtesy of one massive hornet’s nest whose pissed off inhabitants charge straight into his mouth to rearrange and mutilate his jaw.

3) Pawn Shop Harpoon

Talk about a great hook for an opening. The Monkey begins in 1999, where the twins’ blood-drenched dad, Petey (Adam Scott), frantically makes his way to a pawn shop to offload his cursed object. The skeptical owner isn’t interested in the children’s toy or Petey’s insistence that it isn’t one. That’s when the Monkey’s arm comes banging down, setting off a chain of events within the shop that causes a harpoon gun to fire, landing straight into the pawn shop owner’s belly, revealing just how long the small intestines can coil in a brutal disemboweling. It’s the type of scene that warns to buckle up for an absurdly wild ride. 

2) Going to Pieces Over a Night Swim

Hal and Petey’s father/son bonding trip derails almost immediately, thanks to Bill’s murder scheme. The pair stops at a motel not unlike the famous Bates Motel, where the deeply broken a/c signals the grim reaper is lurking near. It arrives shortly after Hal steps outside to take a phone call, where he begins to notice the telltale signs that something is amiss. The faulty a/c unit slips from the roof, crashing into the wet pool area and electrifying the water just as a woman takes a dive. Hal is helpless to warn her; she doesn’t even hit the water as she explodes mid-air. It’s as nasty as it is funny, only further underscoring the random cruelty of death.

1) Fish Hooked

The randomness of death doesn’t just apply to who dies, but how they die, too. Some are lucky to receive a swift death, while others inexplicably suffer protracted fates of immense suffering. The worst of it befalls poor Aunt Ida, whose insanely elaborate death reignites a new wave of annihilation 25 years after the twins thought they’d destroyed the Monkey for good. The perky but quiet woman, living alone, succumbs to a bizarre chain of events that sees her falling through basement steps into a faceful of fish hooks. Ida manages to dust herself off and clean her wounds with rubbing alcohol, the move that proves fatal when she ignites her stovetop for a calming beverage, only for her newly flammable face to go up in flames. She runs out the door and impales her fiery head upon the realtor’s sign in her yard. It’s a centerpiece kill that heralds in the second half of the film, and Perkins marks the occasion with Rube Goldberg Machine-style gallows humor.

Eenie Meanie will premiere on August 22 on Hulu.

The film follows a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend.

It’s written and directed by Shawn Simmons and stars Samara Weaving as the titular character Edie, also known as “Eenie Meanie.”

Eenie Meanie also stars Karl Glusman (Watcher), Jermaine Fowler (The Blackening), Marshawn Lynch, Randall Park, with Steve Zahn and Andy Garcia. The producers are Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick (Zombieland, Deadpool), and Marty Ewing.

The high-speed thriller is rated “R” for “violence/bloody images, pervasive language, nudity, some sexual material, and brief drug use.“

A favorite in the horror world, Samara Weaving has a handful of projects headed our way soon, also including the sequel Ready or Not: Here I Come and remake Over Your Dead Body.

The Monkey will be streaming on Hulu beginning August 7, 2025.

Based on the Stephen King short story from 1985’s Skeleton Crew, the gory horror-comedy is written and directed by Osgood Perkins (Longlegs) and produced by James Wan.

In the film, “When twin brothers find a mysterious wind-up monkey, a series of outrageous deaths tear their family apart. 25 years later, the monkey begins a new killing spree forcing the estranged brothers to confront the cursed toy.” Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell, and Sarah Levy star.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “With storytelling efficiency and a playful spirit, The Monkey delivers a King adaptation like no other. Perkins pushes back against logic in favor of entertaining midnight madness, and death has never been funnier or gorier as a result.”

The Monkey scared up $68.8 million at the worldwide box office, leading to a new pact between Perkins and NEON. In addition to launching his own production banner titled Phobos, alongside Chris Ferguson, Perkins has also signed a first look deal with NEON.

The anthology, now streaming on Hulu, features a triptych depicting three of the fiercest warriors in human history: a Viking raider guiding her young son on a bloody quest for revenge, a ninja in feudal Japan who turns against his Samurai brother in a brutal battle for succession, and a WWII pilot who takes to the sky to investigate an otherworldly threat to the Allied cause.

The self-contained stories eventually converge as the human warriors awaken from suspended animation and find themselves displaced by time on a strange new planet, held captive and forced to enter a gladitorial arena where they must fight each other to the death. The prize for survival? The winner must face a behemoth Warlord Predator to determine the ultimate Killer of Killers. 

The trio of humans eventually learn to work together to escape their new fate, but tough-as-nails shield-maiden Ursa (Lindsay LaVanchy) sacrifices herself to aid the escape. But the Yautja have long been established as an extra-terrestrial species that honors a worthy opponent and places Ursa back in stasis instead of killing her. The anthology ends with Ursa getting placed back in their cryo storage alongside countless others that the Yauja have collected throughout time and space, with the final image of the film resting on another warrior in their possession: Naru (Amber Midthunder), the Comanche warrior who bested the Predator in Prey.

It’s a startling sight in that it not only answers the questions Prey‘s closing credit imagery evoked but that it’s not exactly the fate we’d wish for the young Comanche warrior. Still, it means she’s alive and poised to face the Predators again sometime in the future. 

Naru’s surprise appearance also highlights that Prey director and Predator: Killer of Killers co-director Dan Trachtenberg is playing the slow game when it comes to expanding the Predator franchise. The filmmaker also has Predator: Badlands on the way this year, but this Killer of Killers cameo is laying the groundwork for what’s beyond. Don’t expect to see Naru pop up in Badlands; Trachtenberg has larger ambitions for her return, which he’s keeping close to the vest.

Trachtenberg tells Bloody Disgusting, “The fun is that now we have the end of Prey set up something, and then there’s this, and I love the slow play of it all. I think is cool rather than smushing everything together inside one movie right away, we can really be elegant with our storytelling and hopefully aspire to that. So, it is not a setup for what’s in Badlands, but it is a setup for what could happen afterward.”

It’s clear the director is thinking many steps ahead, and that Naru factors into those plans if they come to pass. Naru’s appearance in the Yautja cryo bay means that a sequel to Prey could take place anywhere, at any time. What are the Yautja up to with their collection of hunters? The possibilities are now endless.

It’s the third segment, the 1941-set “Bullet,” that brings the film closer to the familiar Predator timeline.

The segment introduces Torres (Rick Gonzalez), a young car mechanic drafted into the war as a fighter pilot. It makes him uniquely suited to notice something deeply amiss during an intense dogfight. Torres becomes an unlikely hero in the skies, and an asset to his superior, Vandy.

But the actor lending his voice to Vandy also has experience with playing hero against an extra-terrestrial threat: Michael Biehn.

This role puts Biehn in a rare club among very few actors. Trachtenberg, speaking with Bloody Disgusting, sums it up best: “Now nothing thrills me more about the whole movie than that because of what we’ve done, Michael Biehn has faced off against the Terminator and a Xenomorph and now finally a Predator. It’s the greatest thing.”

Wassung agrees, “It’s pretty awesome for him to join that rare club of being in each of the famous, iconic franchises that we all know and love. That was just really rad. I got to meet him in the sound recording, and it was definitely a very full circle moment for us all.”

Torres’ unexpected battle against the Yautja evolves beyond the sky, where he comes into possession of the film’s most familiar weapon of all to fans of the franchise: the Raphael Adolini 1715 flintlock pistol.

This particular pistol first appear in the franchise in 1990’s Predator 2, set in 1997, which ended with the Yautja honoring Lieutenant Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover) with the antique weapon after besting one of their own. Trachtenberg took it even further with franchise prequel Prey, where French voyageur Raphael Adolini (Bennett Taylor) traded his pistol to Naru (Amber Midthunder) in exchange for tending to his wounds. 

Predator: Killer of Killers brings the weapon into the story in a very amusing way as the Yautja later assign human warriors a weapon, but it also makes sense for the overarching canon. Trachtenberg revealed that the pistol’s appearance wasn’t initially part of the plan.

“Funny enough, that sequence didn’t initially have them being given weapons, and then we had the idea for them to be given weapons, and then it was like, ‘wait, wait, hold on. We could give Torres the gun.’ I think, as a byproduct of that, one could assume that up there in cold storage could be the previous owner of that gun,” Trachtenberg teases.

The original animated action-adventure film follows three of the fiercest warriors in human history: a Viking raider guiding her young son on a bloody quest for revenge, a ninja in feudal Japan who turns against his Samurai brother in a brutal battle for succession, and a WWII pilot who takes to the sky to investigate an otherworldly threat to the Allied cause.

It’s a premise that suggests a straightforward triptych, but playing with the anthology format allowed for more surprises in Killer of Killers’ franchise expansion. Trachtenberg tells Bloody Disgusting that it was making three distinct tales into one cohesive whole that cracked this anthology open.

“That was really when this unlocked for me, and I was toiling over exactly what to do and what the take could be. Once we had that little nugget of like, ‘Oh, actually, we could be doing more.’ That the movie wouldn’t just be Twilight Zone as an anthology. That it would be Pulp Fiction as an anthology. That these stories could really be interwoven and build to something incredibly special.”

Trachtenberg further explains, revealing a surprising source of inspiration in the process.

“So to be under a spoiler umbrella about the ending, if you want, the thing that I’ve always been chasing was a feeling I had watching Best In Show, the Christopher Guest movie. Normally, when you’re watching a contest movie or a sports film, you’ve got one character that you’re rooting for and hoping for them to win. Something crazy happened as a byproduct of just the nature of that movie that you’ve connected with all of these people. You weren’t thinking about who’s going to have to win the competition. You were just enjoying them, and all of a sudden, the competition builds to a climax. It’s like I’ve never had more stakes for the winner of a contest because I’ve really connected to the characters equally. That was what I knew would be so special about this structure. So, that was a huge piece of figuring out the movie was the format.”

Though Predator: Killer of Killers does tie each distinct story together eventually, each of the three stands apart with its own style, cadence, and action matching the era. Each brings a cultural specificity, too, bringing depth and pathos to the protagonists featured in each. 

“I credit Amy Carter,” Wassung says. “She is one of our production designers. She has this special superpower that she can just really drill down on historical cultures. She came from that background. She was a researcher on Lincoln and many other films. She grew up through art, and her dad was a production designer. She was just so great at finding these pieces of history and these photos from this museum or this book or whatever, and she would coalesce them in a way that was very authentic. Then, 20th was able to bring in professional cultural advisors.”

That extended to the action itself; Wassung explains, “There was just a lot of input even down to we had stunt consultants, some of whom were trained in really advanced Sword Mastery, and they were able to video for us little tutorials on how to properly hold a sword, what is the proper form for a situation, and we were able to give that to every animator on the project. So they got this tutorial on how to be a proper samurai and how you hold and what you do. It was just so many elements that went into it, but it was a very high priority for us all.”

Killer of Killers begins in 841 AD, in a story titled “Shield,” where shield-maiden Ursa’s (Lindsay LaVanchy) quest for vengeance is well underway amidst harsh winter terrain. A primal battle between two Viking tribes turns into an all-out bloodbath when the feud is interrupted by the arrival of a Predator eager to join the hunt. That pattern, in which a Predator interrupts human combat, repeats twice more to introduce new opponents deemed worthy by the Yautja’s fiercest warriors.

“Sword” brings viewers to Feudal Japan just as a deep-seated rivalry between two brothers (both voiced by Louis Ozawa), a samurai and a ninja, explodes into violence, attracting an inhuman foe. “Bullet” shifts gears to 1941, where aspiring pilot Torres (Rick Gonzalez) discovers an invisible threat amidst intense aerial dogfights. 

Each story reflects its era and cultural specificity, lending a distinct style and tone to each act. That, in turn, brings a different flavor of action and carnage to each segment that prevents them from feeling too repetitive. The iron will of Ursa and the Vikings inspires a very different style of combat than the elegance of the samurai, for example. The effervescent Torres, by comparison, is untrained and scrappy, leading to a battle of wits in the sky.

Each unique set of circumstances opens breathtaking animated action sequences that make full use of the R-rating and then some; it’s a lot easier to get away with decapitations, maiming, and viscera in animated form, after all. The throughline isn’t the Predator-induced carnage, though, but the duty-bound honor and heart that fuels each unwitting participant in the Yautja’s game. The filmmakers and cast manage to endear these protagonists in a short period, earning laughs and tears along the way; though the short form format does create limitations.

Just when Predator: Killer of Killers starts feeling too self-contained to make much of an impact beyond its stunning craftsmanship and elegant storytelling, screenwriter Micho Robert Rutare, working from a story Trachtenberg, saves the anthology’s biggest surprises for last. Namely, the final act serves as connective tissue between this standalone anthology and the greater universe, revealing new facets to the Yautja while dangling teases of what may lie ahead.

That’s far more exciting than Killer of Killers‘ requisite use of Easter eggs and references to the past, though Trachtenberg and Wassung ensure they’re as satisfying as they are fleeting. Aliens actor Michael Biehn, for example, makes his first appearance in the Predator franchise by lending his voice to Torres’ mentor and superior. And a certain 1715 flintlock pistol earns genuine laughs for its clever inclusion here. But the emphasis always remains on the present characters.

It’s the ambition and reverence for the Predator world that prevents Killer of Killers from falling into repetitive stagnation or feeling like a mere appetizer to this fall’s Predator: Badlands. Trachtenberg hints at future plans for the franchise with a provocative final image guaranteed to get fans buzzing. It’s one small moment of many that elevates this handsomely made but conceptually simple anthology into a worthwhile addition to the Yautja canon, raising new questions along the way.

Walter Mosley & Nadia Latif wrote the screenplay for the novel adaptation.

The novel was originally published back in 2004.

Co-Director Dan Trachtenberg previously said of his original animated feature, “Thematically, all segments are driven by a simple question: ‘Who would be a unique challenge for the Predator?'” That certainly appears to be the case; this anthology is unleashing a Predator aerial battle.

Because that’s the truth, and Bloody Disgusting has the exclusive first details.

Predator: Killer of Killers is a three-part animated anthology that showcases Yautja warriors hunting human prey across global history. It’ll premiere as a Hulu exclusive on June 6th, 2025. The voice cast includes Lindsay LaVanchy, Louis Ozawa, Rick Gonzalez, and Michael Biehn.

Here’s the official synopsis with all the glorious details:

“Predator: Killer of Killers, an original animated action-adventure film set in the Predator universe, will premiere June 6th, 2025, exclusively on Hulu. The anthology story follows three of the fiercest warriors in human history: a Viking raider guiding her young son on a bloody quest for revenge, a ninja in feudal Japan who turns against his Samurai brother in a brutal battle for succession, and a WWII pilot who takes to the sky to investigate an otherworldly threat to the Allied cause. But while all these warriors are killers in their own right, they are merely prey for their new opponent – the ultimate killer of killers.”

It’s a brilliant concept that passionate fans have long pondered since Predators can interrupt any era. Maybe King Arthur’s Camelot guard versus Predators or Blackbeard’s crew firing cannonballs at Predators. Wherever worthy adversaries exist, a Predator might challenge for dominance. Trachtenberg was so in love with the project that he co-directed alongside Josh Wassung (from animation company The Third Floor) while on location for Predator: Badlands. “We were writing the script for [Killer of Killers] while we were prevising stuff on [Badlands], and then [once on location] in New Zealand, on the way to shoot [Badlands], we would remote with everyone back here and [watch footage] thanks to Starlink.” 

When asked why on Earth he’d make two films at once, Trachtenberg chuckled and admitted, “This all was like a game of hopscotch…That was dumb. I hope I don’t do it again.”

Oh, I should probably tell you that I was lucky enough to watch the first twenty-ish minutes of Predator: Killer of Killers with Trachtenberg in attendance. That spanned the icy Viking revenge arc in its entirety, which, let me confirm, doesn’t lose a lick of Predator signatures through illustration versus a gore-forward, practical effects showcase. The spectacle of action sequences and brutal kill shots reminds me of Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, Warner Bros. Animation’s hyper-violent and bone-shattering animated franchise starter. Another journalist quickly pointed out how the visual design resembles Netflix’s Arcane (complimentary), which Trachtenberg cited as an artistic inspiration.

Predator: Killer of Killers marks The Third Floor’s first full-length feature, but they’re no rookies. As Trachtenberg notes, Wassung and his team have handled VFX for countless properties you’ve loved across Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, The Boys, Netflix Originals—the list continues. Many companies contributed to the film, but Wassung’s co-director tag speaks to Trachtenberg’s enthusiasm about working together, laying the groundwork for visual compositions that do not lack survivalist ferocity or intensity despite biased preconceptions about cartoons.

This isn’t Trachtenberg’s first animated rodeo, either. He recalls directing the opening cinematic for a video game titled Warframe, and how the experience made him realize there’s not that stark a difference between live-action and animated filmmaking. “I was so struck by how animation, on the one hand, you can do anything—but also, you become just as limited as you do in live action.” The number of sets costs money, the number of characters, the number of wardrobes, yadda yadda. That experience helped Trachtenberg “shoot it the way I would a live-action movie, and so that it felt cinematic from my voice.” 

Of the elements to be excited about, segment individuality remains paramount. “Most characters are dealing with generational [issues], trying to break a cycle. All the chapters are different genre-wise.” The frosty, fog-thick battlegrounds of 841 AD have a chill to them as this badass Viking death-dealer avenges her lineage while massacring her foes, yet the trailer footage for the American pilot segment looks much brighter and more adventure-centric. But, thematically, all segments are driven by a simple question: “Who would be a unique challenge for the Predator?” Time periods were chosen based on their trademark fighting capabilities and “cool” factor, from Japanese samurai choreography to WW2 airborne dogfights. The door is wide open to so many alternate possibilities, but Trachtenberg confirms Predator: Killer of Killers was created to stand alone, always as an anthology feature (versus, say, television episodes).

“You don’t want to feel shortchanged by the experience, that it was incomplete. I won’t sleep at night if I don’t feel like I’ve communicated everything I wanted to with [Badlands and Killer of Killers].

It’s clear how Trachtenberg and screenwriter Micho Robert Rutare want to embolden Yautja lore beyond its familiar attributes. In the segment we watched, the Predator looms a bulkier build with this sonic charge-up fist weapon that introduces never-before-seen technology. He’s a heavyweight Yautja, throwing haymakers that turn craniums into splattery mist. Predator: Killer of Killers takes advantage of its medium and visualizes Predator storytelling that’d otherwise be far harder to accomplish in live-action. Trachtenberg likens his approach to his experiences at sleepovers: “When I was 12, and I saw Akira for the first time, and I was like, what the fuck? What did I just see? I can’t believe a movie could be like that.” He wants Predator: Killer of Killers to be that sleepover awakening for a new generation of movie lovers.

If my multiple gasps during bloodthirsty Viking warfare are a tell, he’s on the right track. There’s one decapitation, a head popped between two crescent cutouts on dual-bladed spherical shields, that’s worth the price of admission alone.

Predator: Killer of Killers makes the impossible, or at least improbable, possible. Stan Winston‘s legendary Predator body suit and mechanical facial effects are Hall of Fame craftsmanship, but exhibit limitations. Through animation, Predators aren’t inhibited by their costumes. There’s an entire underwater combat sequence in the footage we saw, and more elaborate and far-fetched science fiction gizmos. Trachtenberg’s not trying to overwrite a legacy, but to bring the Predator franchise to the “next level.” Oh, the places the Yautja can go are endless, and it won’t cost live-action budgets.

Since Badlands is on the horizon, we tried to connect continuity dots. As per a cheeky and coy Trachtenberg: “There’s so much cool stuff in this movie. It might even go into more than Badlands or—or it might not.” There’s also a framing device that looks oddly familiar to Nimrod Antal’s Predators, with prisoners en route somewhere, but evidently that’s just a coincidence. “It’s different. You do not need to [rewatch] Predators.” Predator: Killer of Killers is its own beast, themed around a throughline of courage and tenacity in the face of Yautja threats. “The movie is very much about the connection between the characters, as much as the stories themselves.”

With that enthusiasm, Trachtenberg plans to crack open the Predator franchise and expose vast new worlds. There are no current plans for a sequel, but it’s hard to foresee any future where Predator: Killer of Killers—as long as it’s deemed successful—doesn’t add future chapters. There are so many breeds of soldiers for the Yautja to de-spine, and as many variations you can spin on Predator builds. Predator: Killer of Killers could be the start of something fantastic, but at the very least, it promises three brand new Predator experiences like you’ve never seen before.

Control Freak debuts exclusively on Hulu on March 13.

The logline for this psychological thriller is straightforward, simple, and effective: “A motivational speaker is tormented by an unrelenting itch on the back of her head.”

Watch the new trailer below, which introduces the start of the parasitic affliction. Intriguingly, the trailer withholds any full glimpse of the entity, though the creepy, crawly new poster below might give us a better look.

In Control Freak, Tran plays  “Valerie, a woman whose life spirals into chaos due to this inexplicable and relentless affliction.” Opposite Tran, Miles Robbins (Daniel Isn’t Real, Halloween) plays “her on-screen husband Robbie.”  Toan Le rounds out the cast as Valerie’s father, Sang, with Kieu Chinh as Aunt Thuy.

The  WorthenBrooks and Hulu Original horror movie was written and directed by Shal Ngo (The Park, “The Box”), expanding his 2021 horror short “Control” featured in the second season of Hulu’s Bite Size Halloween. That means that Control Freak joins WorthenBrooks’s expanding slate of horror features for Hulu, which includes titles like Appendage, The Mill, Clock, Mr. Crocket, and Carved.

Producers include David Brooks, Arbi Pedrossian, Jenna Cavelle, and Shaum S. Sengupta, with Miles Alva serving as executive producer.

Control Freak arrives next month on Hulu before heading to Disney+ internationally at a later date.

After spending December revisiting Joel Schumacher’s 2004 version of The Phantom of the Opera (listen), Bette Davis’ Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte (listen) and Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 (listen), Trace and I rang in 2025 with a look back at Sophia Takal‘s Into The Dark entry, New Year, New You (2018), co-written with Adam Gaines.

In the Hulu film, Alexis (Suki Waterhouse) joins friends Kayla (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Chloe (Melissa Bergland) and social media influencer Danielle (Carly Chaikin) to ring in the new year.

But Alexis has ulterior motives for attending this year’s festivities. She blames Danielle for her facial disfigurement, resents her for her fame, and has a devious plan to exact revenge. The party quickly turns into a hostage situation with Kayla and Chloe forced to pick sides as the other two work out their issues in an escalating series of verbal and physical spats.

Will Alexis get her revenge? Will Danielle acknowledge her faults? And who will survive to celebrate the new year?

As part of a 2025 preview video from Disney+, we’ve got the first footage from “Alien: Earth” this morning, which gives us a brief sneak peek at the locations and characters.

One character says in voiceover, “This ship collected specimens from faraway moons… monsters.” The suggestion there is that a Xenomorph specimen has been brought back to Earth in the upcoming “Alien: Earth,” which will indeed be the franchise’s first installment set here on Earth. Check out the first look preview footage for next year’s “Alien: Earth” below.

Creator Noah Hawley recently told Deadline, “There’s something about seeing a Xenomorph in the wilds of Earth with your own eyes that is truly chilling… to think of it moving here among us. And so I can’t tell you under what circumstances you’ll see that, but you’ll see it — and you’re going to lock your door that night.”

Sydney Chandler stars in FX’s “Alien: Earth,” set roughly 70 years in the future. FX had originally teased, “Expect a scary thrill ride set not too far in the future here on Earth.”

In “Alien: Earth”…

“When a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, a young woman and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet’s greatest threat.”

The series is set 30 years before the events of the original Alien – Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus, meanwhile, takes place 20 years *after* the events of Ridley Scott’s Alien.

The upcoming “Alien: Earth” deals with “the emergence of the story’s infamous Weyland-Yutani Corporation and the race between corporations to create new android life.”

Sydney Chandler is playing a character named Wendy in the series, said to be “a hybrid, a meta-human who has the brain and consciousness of a child but the body of an adult.”

Babou Ceesay (“Guerrilla”), Jonathan Ajayi (“Wonder Woman 1984”), Erana James (“Uproar”), Lily Newmark (“Sex Education”), Diêm Camille (“Washington Black”), Adrian Edmondson (“War & Peace”), Timothy Olyphant (“Fargo”), David Rysdahl (“Fargo”), Essie Davis (The Babadook), Alex Lawther (The End of the F*cking World), Samuel Blenkin (“Black Mirror”), Adarsh Gourav (The White Tiger), Sandra Yi Sencindiver (“Foundation”), and Moe Bar-El (The Peripheral) also star in the upcoming sci-fi/horror series.
