The Great Beyond will now release in theaters and IMAX on October 1, 2027.

Deadline explains, “We understand that there was a test screening of The Great Beyond at the Regal Irvine with Warners deciding that they wanted 70MM Imax prints of the pic. Abrams has been busy editing and was expected to finish post in September. Now, the filmmaker has more time to complete his original Bad Robot opus which he wrote.”

The mysterious film is being described as a science fiction fantasy.

Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”) and Glen Powell (The Running Man) will star alongside Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Merritt Wever, and Samuel L. Jackson.

The vague synopsis reads: “Once upon a time, there was a little girl, a young woman and a young boy. They each held a secret too heavy to bear. They met in an end-of-the-world world, and together rode a big motorcycle through empty cities, deserted freeways, immemorial forests.

“On their journey, they encountered many dangers, but kept going. In search of who they were; in search of a place to B, maybe?”

Lily May B is slated to shoot in Spring 2027 with Hugo Sélignac (Smoking Causes Coughing) of the Paris-based Chi-Fou-Mi Productions producing.

“Once upon a time, this is what destroyed us, and this is what kept us alive,” Carax cryptically teased of the project.

“To me, Leos Carax is one of the reasons I fell in love with Cinema,” Selignac said. “Having the chance to embark on this first journey alongside him means a great deal to me. Lily May B carries forward his singular vision with the freedom, raw emotion, and visual power that are uniquely his. Seeing this universe meet Jenna Ortega’s immense talent today feels simply natural.”

Variety shared the concept art below, which indicates that the film will have a heightened and dreamlike visual style in the same vein as Carax’s previous work.

Ortega’s other upcoming genre projects include J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi film The Great Beyond, in theaters November 13; “Wednesday” Season 3, currently in production for a 2027 premiere; and Single Female, a remake of Single White Female with Taylor Russell.

Creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, “Smallville”) are back as showrunners, alongside executive producer and director Tim Burton.

Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Joy Sunday, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Isaac Ordonez, Billie Piper, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Victor Dorobantu, Evie Templeton, Luis Guzmán, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joanna Lumley, and Fred Armisen return to star.

New additions include Eva Green (Dark Shadows), Winona Ryder (“Stranger Things”), Chris Sarandon (Fright Night), Noah Taylor (“Game of Thrones”), Oscar Morgan (“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”), Kennedy Moyer (“Task”), Lena Headey (“Game of Thrones”), Andrew McCarthy (Weekend at Bernie’s), and James Lance (“Ted Lasso”).

Season 3 plot details are being kept under wraps, but Gough and Millar previously teased, “This season, we welcome new students, new teachers, and excavate some long-rotting Addams Family secrets. Don’t say you weren’t warned.”

“Wednesday” is expected to return in 2027.

Jenna Ortega revealed this little horror fun fact in a chat with the Big Bro with Kid Cudi podcast, admitting to her X co-star that she was definitely not right for the part at the time.

“I didn’t understand it… I was so young when it came in. But I think I auditioned for Hereditary,” Ortega explains. “Which obviously I wouldn’t have made any sense for… especially my disposition as a kid. And I didn’t know what I was looking at…. they gave us barely any sides… it was like two pages of just ominous words that, as a 12-year-old, kind of went over the head.”

“But I remember seeing it, looking at it, and thinking, ‘I feel like this is an important movie.’ And it was. Incredible movie,” Ortega continues. “Yeah, it’s funny to think that I went in for that.”

“Because again, I just didn’t make any sense for it.”

We can only assume that Jenna Ortega had auditioned for the role of Charlie Graham, which was unforgettably played by Milly Shapiro in Hereditary. It’s hard to imagine literally anybody else other than Shapiro in that role, so some things really do work out for the best.

Jenna Ortega will be back in the horror genre in the upcoming third season of “Wednesday,” while she’s also set to star alongside Taylor Russell in a remake of Single White Female.

All your favorite characters will return in “Wednesday” Season 3, with Netflix announcing that Winona Ryder, Eva Green, and Chris Sarandon (Fright Night) will be joining them.

This will mark Winona Ryder’s return to Netflix in the wake of “Stranger Things” coming to an end, as well as a reunion with director Tim Burton. Eva Green and Chris Sarandon have of course previously worked with Tim Burton as well, with Green starring in Dark Shadows and Miss Peregrine, and Sarandon voicing Jack Skellington in The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Winona Ryder will be playing a character named Tabitha, while Eva Green is Aunt Ophelia.

Burton will return to direct “Wednesday” Season 3, with the season’s cast of returning faces and new players including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Emma Myers, Hunter Doohan, Billie Piper, Fred Armisen, Isaac Ordonez, Joy Sunday, Victor Dorobantu, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Oscar Morgan, Noah Taylor, Luyanda Unati Lewis-Nyawo, Kennedy Moyer, Evie Templeton, Joanna Lumley, Joonas Suotamo, Liv Spencer and more.

The mysterious film is confirmed to be sci-fi, but it is not a time travel movie. Expect this feature to remain shrouded in secrecy for as long as possible.

What we do know is that The Great Beyond stars in-demand actors Jenna Ortega (“Wednesday”) and Glen Powell (The Running Man). It also stars Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Merritt Wever, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Abrams wrote and directed the film, which Indiewire notes was thought to be titled “Ghost Writer.” The filmmaker also produced the film with Tommy Gormley.

It’s also worth noting that Abram’s latest will go up against Ti West’s Ebenezer: Christmas Carol film, opening on the same day.

“Wednesday” was noticeably absent on Netflix’s announcement of their 2026 TV slate this morning. 

That shouldn’t be too much of a surprise, considering the gothic supernatural series is one of Netflix’s more elaborate productions. “Wednesday” season two arrived almost three years after the first, also partially impacted by the 2023 strikes in Hollywood. Netflix’s #1 most watched series premiered in 2022.

The series received its season three renewal months ahead of season two’s premiere, and production is rumored to begin next month for a 2027 debut.

In the latest season of the Netflix series, “Nevermore is back in session as Wednesday tangles with a new principal, a devious campus stalker, and a waning grip on her psychic powers.”

Creator/showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar return for the spine-tingling second season of “Wednesday,” alongside executive producer and director Tim Burton.

“Every family has its dark chapters. Including ours.”

The first half of Wednesday’s second season preached themes of legacy, disruption, and a message where Wednesday proved that she’s an Outcast, through and through, regardless of whether she possesses any supernatural powers. These ideas continue to blossom in Season 2: Part 2. However, these remaining episodes don’t just reinforce what it means for Wednesday to be an Outcast, but what it means for her to be an Addams.

Wednesday Season 2: Part 2 is slightly more surreal and morose, but there are still opportunities for these episodes to have fun and break away from the grander Hyde and premonition plot. Part 2 warmly complements the season’s first-half, all of which culminates in a deeply weird season of television. Like a complex piece of orchestral cello music, Part 2 hits new notes that strengthen what came before them and create something beautiful.

Season 2: Part 1 ended on a cliffhanger, and these new episodes don’t waste any time in resolving this hurdle and moving on to fresh conflicts as Wednesday attempts to recover her psychic powers and prevent an ancient prophecy. This supernatural fulfillment corresponds to a deeper connection to the entire Addams lineage. Fortunately, Part 2 is no longer a case where Wednesday is the only interesting character and everyone else is dead weight. Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday still carries the show, but the rest of the cast’s growing pains get worked out and turned into assets. It’s no longer a letdown whenever an episode cuts away from Wednesday.

Season 2: Part 2 also gets a lot of mileage out of Weems (Gwendoline Christie) as Wednesday’s new Spirit Guide. Weems stays cryptic, while an annoyed Wednesday prods to get her powers back. This could be a really cloying dynamic, so it’s encouraging that Wednesday shows restraint in this department. Lady Gaga’s appearance as Rosaline Rotwood is slightly more gratuitous and unnecessary. It’s isolated fan-service that allows Gaga to float around like a ghost, yet it certainly meshes with Wednesday’s gothcore aesthetic. 

Curiously, Slurp (Owen Painter) receives the greatest glow-up in these four episodes and he proceeds to take on a much larger role that becomes independent of Pugsley. It’s initially smart to juxtapose Pugsley’s drama with Slurp against Wednesday’s own efforts to tame a Hyde. They’re complementary ideas as the Addams siblings embark down these parallel dark paths. It at least thematically justifies Pugsley’s ongoing B-story and better connects it to the rest of the season than it was in Part 1. All the Slurp material plays much better in retrospect once the character’s full role comes into focus. Alternatively, the Hyde design still looks so freaking goofy the majority of the time, especially when Wednesday wants the audience to feel sympathy for these monsters. They’re at their most effective when they’re obscured in shadow and stylized lighting. 

The Hydes are awkward, but these four episodes look gorgeous and feature some inspired art design and cinematography, especially in Tim Burton’s two episodes that cap off the season. Wednesday has fun with lavish masquerade galas and a standout Day of the Dead celebration that’s mixed with Pilgrim iconography in a delirious amalgamation of history. They’re fun excuses to deck out the school with ghoulish, garish decorations.

There’s also a wildly entertaining body swap episode that really allows Jenna Ortega and Emma Myers to have some fun and flex their acting muscles as they do their best imitation of the other. It’s a completely ludicrous setup, albeit one of the more entertaining highlights of these new episodes. If nothing else, Wednesday glams up and rocks out to BLACKPINK in what amounts to one of the season’s strangest and most satisfying sequences. The season’s most interesting dynamic involves the schism that forms between Wednesday and Enid. Wednesday refuses to be vulnerable and comes clean about her foreboding premonition, while Enid further retreats into the camaraderie of her Nightshade “pack.” It’s rather clear that these wounds will be healed by the season’s end, but it’s still a compelling dramatic throughline that makes sure that these four episodes have as much emotion and heart as they do supernatural mayhem.

Wednesday learns how to get out of her own way and truly be humble. Wednesday’s first season preached the idea that Nevermore’s students are more than the sum of their parts, but this message is much clearer by the end of season two. These episodes have plenty to say on the dangers of good intentions and how something that’s kind and pure can slowly fester over time until it’s corrupted. This theme applies to not just Nevermore, but also Wednesday, Enid, Pugsley, and even Tyler. Family can be a beautiful, freeing form of acceptance, but there’s also the potential for it to be as much of a prison and life-sentence as any supernatural curse.

Wednesday is ultimately strengthened through her blood family and found family — both in a figurative and literal sense — but it’s fascinating to see how these episodes are equally interested in toxic family dynamics, like what’s perpetuated by the Galpin and Night families. Generational trauma and sins of the father, in the truest sense, are fundamental to these episodes. It’s also surely no coincidence that both Wednesday and Tyler are haunted by apparitions of their ancestors, yet Wednesday’s is a helpful guide and Tyler is taunted by his eternal connection to his family’s past. Wednesday may be a little glib in terms of how it explores this theme, but there’s nothing wrong with an adaptation of The Addams Family that’s so family-oriented.

Season 2: Part 2 doesn’t get so consumed by its central mystery that these final episodes are just dense in exposition. The success of the season’s conclusion and whether Wednesday sticks the landing or not are open to interpretation, but one has to respect just how gonzo Wednesday gets with some of its solutions. There’s also a major reveal in the season finale that’s actually kind of brilliant. Part 2 gives its episodes plenty of room to breathe. They’re not just an overstuffed mad dash to the finale. Wednesday gets to be quirky and further develop its personality instead of just jumping from one plot twist to the next. It’s why these episodes feel more natural than the four installments that preceded them. 

There’s more efficient pacing and plotting across these installments that help the season end as confidently as possible. It’s deeply appreciated that Wednesday doesn’t keep Wednesday in her coma for an entire episode while the series indulges in her subconscious. This is a season of eight episodes that has exactly the right amount of story, rather than five episodes’ worth of content that’s spread across eight entries. Tim Burton once again directs two of these four entries. So much of Season 2: Part 2 is Burton riffing on Frankenstein, but there’s also a glorious moment in which he does his best Sam Raimi impression. Newcomer director Angela Robinson also does an exceptional job and her episodes easily hold their own with Paco Cabezas’ installments from Season 2: Part 1. 

Wednesday’s second season ends on a note that’s stronger than where it started. Part 2 is daring, ridiculous, captivating, and imperfect, not unlike Wednesday Addams herself. If Part 1 was an incremental step forward from the first season, Part 2 is an even bigger push to something better. Wednesday is more confident and ambitious with its storytelling and plot twists, which will likely lead to an even stronger third season that continues to refine the series’ and titular character’s voice.

Wednesday continues to thrive in the shadows, but her future has never been brighter.

This is nothing new for anyone who saw the first season of Wednesday and, if anything, it’s helped weed out the skeptical fans who weren’t on board with this tonal chimera. Wednesday is a series that works, almost in spite of itself and largely because of Jenna Ortega’s beyond-committed performance. Wednesday Season 2, Part 1 is a more confident and daring improvement from its first season that takes advantage of the leeway that it’s been granted. That being said, it’s still not able to rid itself of its clumsiest habits, like a too-tight skin that it’s unable to shed from and evolve.

Wednesday’s first season engaged in an overarching mystery, but this element really gets amplified to great effect in season two. Wednesday is essentially turned into a psychic-powered Dexter Morgan-esque torturer of serial killers. It’s a gonzo pivot that appropriately matures the tween material up a little more and situates the series for a standout second season that seems to avoid the standard sophomore slump. It attempts to trim its fat and ditch what wasn’t working in favor of hard-boiled detective theatrics over a rogue, rowdy stalker and criminals, yet it can’t fully get out of its own way. There’s a very Jigsaw quality to Wednesday’s aggressor, which is certainly entertaining, even when it doesn’t always work. It builds to some very arch set-pieces, including a heightened sequence where a ceiling of nails descends and threatens to kill and crush the cast like it’s some Indiana Jones trap.

This season also features more personal stakes as Wednesday searches for answers behind the “black tears” that have begun to plague her when she taps into her newly-awakened psychic powers. While no one expects Wednesday to perish from these ailments, it’s still an effective driving force for the storytelling that’s more practical and has greater stakes than season one’s shenanigans. This superpower Outcast angle becomes even more prominent than it was in Wednesday’s first season. It just makes this all feel a little too much like some X-Men origin story, rather than a black horror-comedy. It becomes too uncomfortably close to Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. This also prompts a greater focus on Wednesday’s cryptic Aunt Ophelia, her powers, and how they’re connected to Wednesday and what’s currently happening to her. It’s a decent angle to create tension, especially once it involves Wednesday’s efforts to prevent a psychic prophecy that involves Enid’s death from coming to fruition.

Wednesday Season 2: Part 1 finds a fun, fresh angle as Wednesday wrestles with her newfound popularity after saving Nevermore Academy from destruction back in season one. This is a playful development for someone like Wednesday who would rather stay out of the spotlight and live in the darkness. She has zero interest in chasing clout, her social standing, and why she’s suddenly Nevermore’s most interesting student. She has much bigger fish — and people — to fry. Wednesday remains one-of-a-kind, but this season showcases many more examples where she works as a team, helps others, and makes Outcasts feel like the majority. It’s a sweet change of pace for Wednesday that never gets too saccharine. Wednesday and company are given a lot of rope across these four episodes, including Prank Day and coming trips. The camping episode, which turns into Rambo by way of Harry Potter, is an entertaining change of pace that helps Wednesday take bigger risks. There’s even an episode that lovingly homages the heist genre in a particularly creative and complex mission that becomes the climax of these four entries.

Those who were put off by the rampant young adult energy of Wednesday’s first season will still have issues with these new episodes. Wednesday still feels like a CW show, but there are many more moments that do, in fact, feel like vintage Addams Family. They actually cause wonton mayhem and get a kick out of it, just as God intended. To this point, Wednesday’s sense of humor is also much stronger this season. There are frenetic cutaways that help the character develop a more eccentric sense of humor that works for the series and makes it feel like truly anything is possible in this heightened world. There’s even the opportunity for a fun riff on Silence of the Lambs as Wednesday pays a visit to Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan). This gives one of the first season’s biggest storylines some appreciated closure, while it also passes the baton over to more twisted ideas in season two.

To this point, Tim Burton directs half of these episodes and feels more keyed in and rejuvenated than ever. This season truly kills it with the production design, cinematography, and performances. Burton’s efforts this season indicate that he has a lot more gas in the tank here than he did in Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. There’s a phenomenal stopmotion campfire story in the season premiere that has so much personality and energy. It conjures vintage Burton in the best way possible. It’s not unexpected for these extra-special sequences to be more prevalent in Burton’s installments, but some of this magic is better than nothing. Despite how well they work, it’s still slightly awkward for these creative flourishes to only happen intermittently and like they’re a pre-ordered item on Burton’s checklist.

On a performance level, Jenna Ortega is even more comfortable and confident in this role. She makes it her own, but in the best way possible. Every single furtive glance and scowl that she gives are magic. There may not be any moments this season that match Wednesday’s iconic dance scene from the first season, but there’s a swordfight with Morticia in the woods that gets close. Wednesday may claim that she “doesn’t evolve, but cocoons,” yet she makes some major strides across the season’s first-half, even if she doesn’t want to admit it. There’s also more of the actual Addams family this season once Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) begins to attend Nevermore Academy. It’s such a simple, logical shift, but one that brings so much to the table and completely changes Wednesday’s dynamic in a place where she finally feels like she’s back on solid ground.

Ordonez is solid as a foil for Ortega and never develops too much of a “younger sibling syndrome,” despite being a younger sibling who Wednesday needs to perpetually babysit. Pugsley’s awkward efforts to blend in at Caliban Hall and a lot of the YA dating woes defer to Pugsley, while Wednesday tackles more mature territory. This feels like a perfect compromise that allows Wednesday to tonally have its cake and eat it too, while Enid and Pugsley still manage to pull Wednesday back to more lighthearted antics whenever it’s appropriate. Morticia and Gomez take on more parental duties that are tangentially connected to Nevermore Academy — and by proxy their children — as they become more present (but not too present) this season. Luis Guzman also does some really strong work this season and loses himself in Gomez’s slimy machismo. Season two of Wednesday also doesn’t hold back with its guest stars, the likes of which include Thandie Newton, Billie Piper, Haley Joel Osment, and Steve Buscemi as Barry Dort, Nevermore’s new principal and the season’s surprise MVP.

Wednesday Season 2: Part 1 is very much more of Wednesday, for both better and for worse. Anyone who likes Season 1 will likely be satisfied with the direction of this new story and what it puts into motion. It’s hard to judge what’s ostensibly just the first half of this storyline, but there’s a strong foundation here that does culminate to a fitting cliffhanger conclusion that will leave the audience eager for Part 2 in September. Season 2: Part 1 is an incremental improvement to the first season, albeit with a slightly harder edge. It still suffers from many of the same issues that previously plagued it, some of which are even more pronounced when it comes to the series’ hit-or-miss supporting cast. Wednesday isn’t perfect, but at the end of the day, this is still a series where Steve Buscemi, as the principal of a supernatural academy, converses with the disembodied head of Christopher Lloyd. One can’t be too upset here.

Part 1 is now streaming on Netflix, with Part 2 arriving on September 3, 2025.

Additional guest stars for Season 2 include Jamie McShane, Frances O’Connor, Haley Joel Osment, Heather Matarazzo, Joonas Suotamo, Fred Armisen, and Christopher Lloyd, who played Uncle Fester live-action Addams Family movies from the 1990s. Noticeably absent among the cast and character breakdown at all is Lady Gaga, who was announced as a cast member last November. The singer, songwriter, and actor has been tight lipped on her role in the series. Could Gaga and this mystery character be one and the same?

It’s the basis for psychological genre-bender Hurry Up Tomorrow, starring Tesfaye in an abstract autobiographical odyssey that doubles as the conclusion to The Weeknd’s artistic trilogy that includes After Hours and Dawn FM. If that sounds niche and pretentious, well, it is. 

Tesfaye plays a fictional version of his stage persona, introduced as an artist teetering on the brink of mental collapse amidst an ongoing tour. His exhaustion is compounded by a breakup via voicemail, insomnia, and his overbearing parasitic enabler of a manager, Lee (Barry Keoghan).

Running parallel to The Weeknd’s mounting breakdown is the mysterious young woman (Jenna Ortega, “Wednesday“) fighting tears and setting houses ablaze as she makes her way toward The Weeknd’s fateful Halloween gig that will set both on a mind-bending collision course. It’s a setup that sounds far more enigmatic than it really is, especially when that woman’s name is revealed as Anima, the Jungian archetype that represents the unconscious feminine side of a man. As Anima and her animus (The Weeknd) are drawn together, the musician finds himself forced to confront the guilt and acute sense of loneliness that’s wreaking havoc on his life and those around him.

Director Trey Edward Shults (It Comes At Night), who co-wrote the feature with Tesfaye and Reza Fahim, performs a Herculean feat of bringing artistry and visual interest to what amounts to little more than a superficial vanity project. Swooping camera work, soft focus photography, dreamy imagery, aspect ratio shifts, and Shults’ trademark ability to capture pitch black darkness on screen lend an arthouse feel that makes Hurry Up Tomorrow look and feel far more sophisticated than it really is.

The core conceit and narrative thrust hinges on The Weeknd’s forced reckoning with his fame, identity, and the long-buried demons wreaking havoc on his present. It’s overwrought with the dramatics of a musician opening his veins and exposing his vulnerability, except Hurry Up Tomorrow frequently lets the performer off the hook. The Weeknd is tormented by a recent breakup, but the details remain as unnamed as the woman who broke his heart. That extends to his Anima, herself dealing with turmoil in a relationship with her mother. If you’re still unsure about the film’s clumsy Psych 101 metaphor, just look to the end credits to see who provides the voices for the ex and the estranged mom. 

Rendering the pertinent details in such broad and vague fashion becomes a glaring problem in the film’s third act, which sees The Weeknd absolving himself with even vaguer apologies without ever actually confronting the sins the film only reluctantly hints toward. Apologies that read disingenuous when Hurry Up Tomorrow places just as much blame, if not more so, on the relentless manager who refuses to take The Weeknd’s pleas into consideration, even as he plows him with piles of coke for the sake of compliance.

It winds up making the Anima archetype crucial; the film greatly benefits from Jenna Ortega’s ability to remain vulnerable even while embodying some of The Weeknd’s more deranged tendencies and impulses. It’s she we wind up empathizing with, especially as her male counterpart succumbs to self-pity and despair.

What’s meant more as a baptism by fire that could double as a metaphorical rebirth instead rings hollow. That Shults and Tesfaye opt for a more experimental, emotion-driven form of visual storytelling over conventional narrative further alienates. It all makes for an exhausting show of empty vanity.

Played by Richard E. Grant, Téa Leoni, and Will Poulter, the Leopolds practically froth at the mouth when they discover this unexpected windfall comes with massive financial possibilities and, thus, power. Naturally, nature has other plans for everyone, leading to a brutal struggle for survival.

By summoning the rich history of the unicorn, the movie taps into a reservoir of symbolism that spans centuries—from medieval tapestries to modern blockbuster reinterpretations—underscoring the timeless appeal of fairy tales and legends. Not only does the movie pay homage to these enduring stories, but it also sets the stage for a broader convo about how myths can and should be recontextualized to reflect contemporary societal issues. Let’s take a look at some of the ways Death of a Unicorn deconstructs and plays with these ideas, shall we?

Purity meets Predator

Historically, unicorns have embodied physical and symbolic traits of purity. In some cases and in certain days of yesteryear, unicorns have even been used as a symbol for Jesus Christ. In Death of a Unicorn, Scharfman both celebrates and radically reimagines this idea of an impossibly pure, impossibly virtuous fantasy entity.

Here, we get not just one, but three unicorns to ride around with. Like the unicorns of legend, these beauties retain an air of mystery and an almost sacred quality—particularly in their association with healing and the supernatural. However, rather than serving as benevolent, ethereal beings, these unicorns are also violent, vengeful forces, invoking both awe and terror.

Their blood, which, in folklore (and the stories of He Who Shall Not Be Named), was believed to have purifying and medicinal properties, becomes a central plot point in the film, but here, its miraculous nature is corrupted by human greed and exploitation. Plus, it’s purple. This shift from the unicorn as a symbol of purity to one of danger and retribution shows how even the most revered legends can take on new, darker meanings when refracted through the lens of contemporary anxieties and storytelling.

Then there’s the altered presentation of Mommy and Daddy unicorn. While the foal unicorn resembles a more classic Medieval unicorn, Mom and Dad deviate a bit. In their case, they may first appear to be fairly equine in form, but their serrated horns give off major Seven vibes and are certainly not to be messed with. They also have fangs, which are a far cry from the flat grazing teeth of more traditional herbivores. There’s also the unique bone structure of these unicorns that allows them to move and intimidate in stealthy, predatory ways no actual horse is capable of. Plus, their sheer aggressive demeanor, motivation and dogged determination in seeking vengeance for their baby’s treatment should not to be underestimated.

This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

One of the most potent and resonant elements of Death of a Unicorn is how it pulls the fantasy idea of the unicorn into the real world, grounding its presence in the here and now. Mirroring the historical need to create myths for that which is difficult to understand, Death of a Unicorn uses the unicorn itself as a vessel to offer a sharp critique of humanity’s tendency to exploit and commodify above all else.

For example, the magic powers of the unicorn are not respected by the Leopolds, like, at all. Instead, they are viewed as something to be harvested, controlled, and monetized. Sadly, this idea also echoes the real history of animals like the narwhal, buffalo, or rhino being hunted to extinction or harvested for supposed medicinal benefits. By framing the narrative within the Leopold’s hungry, hungry desire to capitalize on the situation, the story becomes a scathing allegory, reflecting very real anxieties about consumption, scientific advancement, and the calloused disregard for the natural world.

Not In My Movie…I mean, Fairy Tale

It likely won’t come as too big of a surprise that Death of a Unicorn is, at its core, a modern fairy tale. But by deviating from the norm and intentionally subverting expectations, the narrative avoids the pitfall of coming across as cheesy, saccharine, or tone-deaf. Pretty wild, considering there are still multiple unicorns at the heart of it all.

Let’s take Ridley, to start. An open reinterpretation of the virtuous maiden, Ridley passes on being a boring, picturesque figure of innocence and is instead presented as a dynamic, moody, resourceful protagonist deeply connected to nature, and her vape pen. Her purity, in the context of the film, stems from her strong convictions, willingness to speak out, and her open mind to things she may not immediately and fully understand.

And then there’s the Leopolds. Standing in as the rich nobility, the Leopolds are emblematic of modern greed and present an updated version of generational wealth, power, and motivation. Here, instead of a throne, Odell Leopold wields corporate influence, updating the trope to reflect modern ideas about wealth and unchecked ambition. Whereas royalty also historically had some modicum of job security (outside of a coup or takeover of some sort), today’s elite remain eternally fearful of losing status, wealth, and privilege to others, regardless of how much they already have. Fear and willful ignorance makes people do absolutely insane things, like completely exploiting a unicorn and keeping it all for themselves with little to no regard for anyone or anything else around them.

Adding another little fun layer of complexity to the film’s fairy tale re-envisioning are the open nods to historical representations of unicorn lore—most notably, the famed Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries, which depict the capture and demise of a unicorn. Much like these artworks, Death of a Unicorn cleverly juxtaposes the allure of the mythical with the stark realities of modern exploitation. By blending these classic fairy tale archetypes with social commentary, the film transforms from an escapist fantasy into satire.

Drawing on centuries of fairy tale tradition—from the sacred healing qualities of unicorn lore and the poignant imagery of the Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries to timeless archetypes like the virtuous maiden and the rapacious nobility—Death of a Unicorn transforms familiar symbols into potent allegories for today. These tongue-in-cheek reinventions not only update these legends for contemporary audiences but also challenge us to confront the realities of unchecked ambition and consumption. With dynamic characters like the resourceful Ridley and a modern Leopold family that proves there’s no magic bullet for corporate greed, Death of a Unicorn stands as a vivid, satirical fairy tale—one that leaves us with plenty to mull over, proving that even in a messed-up world, the spirit of myth lives on.

Chatting with Collider, Jenna Ortega now teases a slasher episode of “Wednesday” Season 2!

Ortega tells the outlet that the upcoming season will feature “a whole episode based off of slashers,” with lots of “horror references” finding their way into the mix this time around.

Jenna Ortega notes in the same interview, “I feel like we kind of had a little bit more trust, and therefore, we felt like we could do bigger, more elaborate sequences, which is nice.”

Will a “Wednesday” Season 3 eventually follow in its wake, you might be wondering? Ortega tells Collider, “We haven’t gotten an official thumbs up or anything like that, but I know that the writers are… with a show like that, you kind of want to get ahead of the game.”

Joining Ortega in the new season will be fellow returning stars Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, with Lady Gaga also joining the cast.

“Wednesday” is described as “a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy.” The series follows…

“Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships.”

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (“Smallville”) are the writers and showrunners, with Tim Burton executive producing and directing several episodes of the show’s debut season.

Variety details, “Sony and Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures are reviving the intra-apartment friction with Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell in negotiations to star in a remake.”

The original erotic thriller was directed by Barbet Schroeder, with Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh starring. In the 1992 film, “After an unfaithful fiancé leaves her suddenly single, Allison Jones (Bridget Fonda) advertises for a roommate to share her spacious apartment. But when the introverted Hedra (Jennifer Jason Leigh) moves in, she doesn’t just take over Allie’s spare bedroom. She takes over her clothes, her boyfriend … and her identity.”

The original 1990s movie, which spawned a direct-to-video sequel years later in 2005 titled Single White Female 2: The Psycho, was based on John Lutz’s 1990 novel, SWF Seeks Same.

Single White Female was notably featured on Bravo’s “100 Scariest Movie Moments,” landing in spot #56. “I don’t think a haircut has ever been so terrifying,” the show proclaimed.

One person who’s hoping for the return of the Gremlins to the big screen? Jenna Ortega, who’s no stranger to making her mark on iconic movie franchises. Ortega has thus far appeared in the Scream, Beetlejuice, and Addams Family franchises, and it sounds like her phone line is open for any and all calls regarding those adorable Mogwai and those nasty little Gremlins.

On the SXSW red carpet, where Ortega’s latest movie Death of a Unicorn just premiered, the actress was asked what other mythical creature she’d love to see back on screen. The question was posed by IMDb, and Ortega’s answer revealed her love of the Gremlins saga.

“Ya know what I used to love as a kid? Gremlins,” Ortega answered with a smile. “Would love… Gremlins 3? 4? Call me.”

The next installment in the franchise would indeed be Gremlins 3, with Joe Dante directing both Gremlins in 1984 and Gremlins 2: The New Batch in 1990. Yes, that means it’s been 35 years since a Gremlins movie rampaged up on the big screen, which is insane to think about given how popular the franchise – and its lovable characters – has remained through the years.

For now, at least we have Max’s original animated series “Gremlins: The Wild Batch” to keep us company. Gizmo and the gang return to Max with brand new episodes on April 10, 2025!

That rocky road begins with the introduction of father-daughter duo Elliot and Ridley Kinter, played by Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, respectively. The out-of-touch Elliot is dragging Ridley along on a weekend trip to the Leopold Nature Preserve in a bid to sign a major contract with his big pharma boss. After Elliot accidentally crashes into a baby unicorn on the way, all but Ridley see dollar signs when the unicorn’s blood reveals itself to have magical healing properties.

The unicorn’s parents, however, don’t take kindly to the cruelty and unleash savage vengeance. Though it does take a while to get there.

Death of a Unicorn wants to be an eat-the-rich oddball comedy, stacking its ensemble cast with fan-favorite comedic talent like Rudd as the overly career-focused dad to the detriment of his relationship with Ridley. Richard E. Grant and Téa Leoni serve as the affluent and woefully selfish elite driving the greed forward, further evoking the ire of the baby beast’s pissed off parents, with Will Poulter as their only son, a spoiled man child that manages to elicit some of the film’s few actual laughs. The other scene stealer is Anthony Carrigan as the family’s put-upon servant Griff. That leaves Ortega as the voice of reason in a world where money overrides logic.

If it’s not clear already, Death of a Unicorn is well cast. The problem is that very few of them are likable in any way. Even Rudd struggles here; Elliot spends most of the movie disregarding Ridley at every turn. Scharfman attempts to infuse this friction-fueled relationship as the emotional backbone of the story, but Dad is such a jerk that the inevitable reconciliation feels unearned. To be fair, the Leopold family is intentionally rendered unlikable; we’re meant to root for the unicorns to dole out brutal punishment. We’re just trapped with flat caricatures while we wait for sweet, sweet comeuppance.

And boy, do we wait. Scharfman spends quite a bit of time with animal cruelty to further mark characters for death. Even in a film that opts for noticeable CGI over practical effects, the constant mistreatment of the baby drags on far too long to the point where, when mom and dad begin their carnage in earnest, it feels far too little and too late. The filmmaker cribs liberally from the Jurassic Park franchise, from unicorn anatomy details to The Lost World’s baby t-rex plot, further robbing the concept of originality.

The idea behind Death of a Unicorn is a novel one, and Scharfman’s commitment to over-the-top spectacle is commendable. But seeing the greedy elite get taken down in brutal, gory fashion should be far more satisfying than this is.

Death of a Unicorn made its premiere at SXSW and releases in theaters on March 28, 2025.

Prior to Jamie Lee Curtis coming on stage to present an award, the Netflix-streamed live event aired a video package paying tribute to horror’s Scream Queens, featuring clips from a handful of horror movies alongside insights from Curtis, Neve Campbell, and Jenna Ortega.

The video package put the spotlight on classics including Scream, Halloween, Psycho, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, but it also featured clips from deeper cuts including Night of the Demons, Leprechaun, and even Chopping Mall. Other films featured include Poltergeist, Immaculate, Carrie, Friday the 13th, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: Next Generation.

“I’ve made my living screaming,” Jamie Lee Curtis says in the video, while also noting that a scene from the original Halloween showcases the first time she had ever screamed in her entire life. Jenna Ortega notes in the video, “I’ve always considered horror to be a home.” Neve Campbell ponders, “What makes a great scream? Commitment. Letting go.”

“Hurry Up Tomorrow is inspired by and featuring new music from The Weeknd,” the outlet further clarifies. “The project also reps the conclusion to The Weeknd’s artistic trilogy, completing the journey that began with After Hours and Dawn FM.”

Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan also star in Hurry Up Tomorrow.

Trey Edward Shults (It Comes at Night) wrote and directed the feature film.

Of particular note here, Lloyd of course played Uncle Fester in the live action Addams Family movies from the 1990s, while Armisen plays Fester in the “Wednesday” series.
