After a month of doppelgängers and deception, including discussions of cam girl thriller, Cam (listen), 1978 alien invasion Invasion of the Body Snatchers (listen), and the original The Stepford Wives (listen), Trace and I are ready to decompress with a simple, elegant David Fincher title.

In 2002’s Panic Room, Jodie Foster plays Meg, a recently divorcee who moves into a posh townstone (town home meets brownstone) with her pre-teen daughter, Sarah (Kristen Stewart). Unbeknownst to them, the eccentric recluse who owned the property before them left a large fortune in the titular room’s safe…and there are three opportunistic thieves who will do nearly anything to get the cash.

What follows is a cat and mouse thriller as idiot Junior (Jared Leto), sympathetic Burnham (Forest Whitaker), and wild card Raoul (Dwight Yoakam) try to break in while Meg and Sarah attempt to keep them out. Will the thieves get what they want or will the women persist? You’ll find out by the end of the night!

If houses could talk, the one in David Fincher’s Panic Room would have both plenty and very little to say about the Altmans. In this 2002 film, Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart’s characters, a recently divorced mother and her young daughter, ended up only living in their Upper West Side “townstone” for a brief period. Nevertheless, their stay was nothing short of eventful. Bizarre and harrowing, these tenants’ domestic nightmare was manifested with technical boldness and performed with dramatic flair. Today, Fincher’s endeavor in popcorn filmmaking isn’t held anywhere in the same regard as his other works, but even so, beneath Panic Room’s polished surface lurks a story teeming with texture.

David Koepp’s script for Panic Room sounds like an update of Lady in a Cage, that 1964 film where Olivia de Havilland’s rich character becomes trapped within her home’s built-in elevator, and is then menaced by aggressive intruders as her neighbors look the other way. It’s a gruesome commentary on the unprotected legal status of women at the time. Koepp, however, was inspired by the uptick in panic rooms — or safe rooms — among the wealthy. Of course, Jodie Foster’s character Meg Altman didn’t go searching for such a safeguard. No, this foreboding add-on in hers and her daughter’s new home was as fortuitous a find as it was integral to their wellbeing.

Panic Room’s cultural timing was punctual. Even though Koepp began penning his screenplay back in 2000, Fincher’s adaptation didn’t hit screens until spring of 2002. By then, there was an undeniable and rampant sense of paranoia hanging in the air that only added to the film’s own tense atmosphere. This is not a story that’s necessarily looking to breed mistrust in a changing and unpredictable world, but most definitely, it benefitted from that post-9/11 climate. Coincidentally, Jodie Foster’s subsequent thriller, Flightplan, also covered the theme of invasion, albeit aggressively.

panic room

Home invasion, as a subgenre, is overflowing with tales of forced entry, but Panic Room stands out in how it processes that universal fear. For all that initial boasting heard early on in this film, courtesy of two pushy real estate agents, the titular room doesn’t provide long-lasting relief for Foster’s character once she and her child take refuge. On the contrary, they are now more distressed. In addition to their prowlers refusing to vacate, there are oversights that the two women didn’t think to consider; they are not only trapped in the meantime, they still have no say in how the scenario will play out. So while the technological measures in place may not have literally failed, they never deliver as promised. It’s a rather nasty instance of “results may vary.”

As much as Panic Room wants its characters, along with the audience, to believe money can’t buy them security in the long run, that philosophy means nothing to the story’s antagonists. With the exception of Jared Leto’s Junior, the money-grubbing grandson of the house’s former owner and the panic room’s implementer, the other two burglars would only benefit from their windfall. Forest Whitaker’s Burnham, who helped install the panic room he’s now trying to break into, and Dwight Yoakam’s wildcard character Raoul are each hurting for money. Yet, in their effort to cut to the chase, Fincher and Koepp didn’t delve into personal motives or histories. The Panic Room novelization, on the other hand, has the luxury of time. In its unhurriedness, James Ellison’s literary tie-in fleshes out characters on either side of that impenetrable door.

What could have been mistaken for a throwaway line is actually a bit of crafty foreshadowing. By mentioning the previous owner’s missing fortune and the conflict among his potential inheritors, the thieves’ arrival in the story is less abrupt. Pre-announcing their entrance removes the element of randomness that makes home invasions so dreaded, but Panic Room eventually finds its thrills elsewhere. And in the cinematic version, that morsel of info is just enough to excuse the implausible encounter in store. The novelization behaves likewise, although there is more plot padding around the heist. In particular, author Ellison goes into how Junior teamed up with Burnham and Raoul.

panic room
Image: Forest Whitaker and Jared Leto in Panic Room (2002).

In the book, Junior didn’t simply find the man who built the reclusive Sidney Pearlstine’s panic room; he already knew him, seeing as how he and Burnham first crossed paths during the construction, then became reacquainted following the old man’s funeral. As for Raoul, he wasn’t discovered “through some people,” as Junior loosely explained in the film. Raoul is Junior’s drug dealer, fresh out of prison, and endures living with his good-for-nothing mother. Regarding their exact motivations, Burnham wants to clear substantial gambling debts and reconcile with his wife, whereas Raoul craves a clean slate, preferably somewhere tropical. Junior is still an entitled screwup in Ellison’s take, but now he resents his grandfather for being kinder to Burnham — that “staunch left-winger” preferred the company of “a working-class Black man” — than his own family.

Race and class come up in Panic Room even when the film doesn’t explicitly address these topics. The novelization is less inclined to skip the dialogue, even if it’s still done indirectly, and as expected, the author uses Frank Burnham and Raoul Avila to make his points. The matters of systemic poverty and racial discrimination are raised now, thanks to that extra attention paid to both men’s backgrounds.

Jodie Foster took over after Nicole Kidman dropped out, on account of an injury. The change ultimately pushed Fincher to approach the film and its protagonist differently, however, that divorcée-turned-hero is still shown to be quite vulnerable. The novelization runs away with that pathos, emphasizing Meg Altman’s inner battle with herself. Ellison expounded on Koepp’s design and offered a character whose whole life, up until now, has been something of a panic room in itself. The Meg found in the novelization goes through the same situational hurdles as her on-screen counterpart, yet the printed version of her catharsis is granted a bit more emotional oomph. This Meg realizes the weight of her ordeal, and in a way, is thankful for it. Ellison summed it up best by writing: “It had taken her thirty-six years of living, but Meg finally lost her innocence.”

Streamlining Panic Room comes at the cost of some exposition, but the blanks aren’t too hard to fill in, even without reading the novelization. It’s the sort of film where actions speak louder than words. And while the technical components and the high-concept setting evidently received top priority, David Fincher’s eye for detail only enhanced the story of this pulse-pounding and singular thriller.

“True Detective: Night Country,” the brand new season of the hit HBO series, is currently underway on Max with three episodes left to uncover the strange mysteries of Alaska. For those without a subscription, we’ve got good news: the premiere episode is available to watch online free right now!

From writer/director/showrunner/executive producer Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid), “Night Country” stars Jodie Foster alongside Kali Reis.

“When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”

Check out the age-restricted premiere episode below, which kicks off the genre-bending season-long mystery with an inciting event heavily reminiscent of The Thing or the Dyatlov Pass Incident.

Issa López serves as showrunner and writer and directs all episodes.

John Hawkes (Deadwood, Winter’s Bone), Christopher Eccleston (The Leftovers), Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve), Finn Bennett (Domina) and Anna Lambe (Three Pines) also star.

“Night Country” marks the show’s first season without creator Nic Pizzolatto. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson return as executive producers, with Foster also exec producing. “True Detective” premiered on HBO back in 2014, with the stellar first season being followed by second and third seasons that didn’t quite garner the same acclaim as that initial outing.

Expect this season to make connections to the first season. López said in a recent interview, ““What I kept about it is that there’s a bunch of winks to the first season, from characters that are related to characters in that first season to the beer they drink to the long drives where the two characters explore their own visions of the universe that are completely opposed, to some things that happen in Episode Six that you will see in time. But it is a love letter, in a way, to all the things that really worked in that first season.”

New episodes of “True Detective: Night Country” premiere Sundays on HBO at 9PM ET, exclusively on Max.

Showrunner/Writer/Director Issa López makes a drastic departure from the previous three seasons of the noir crime series “True Detective” by relocating the setting to Northern Alaska at the start of Polar Night, launching “True Detective: Night Country” with a scene that hails straight out of horror. This inciting event set at an arctic research station, complete with knowing winks to The Thing, sets the atmospheric tone for a compelling, intense season that easily sets a high bar for the series.

Investigating the mysterious and sudden disappearance of the research station’s inhabitants, with no trace left behind save for a woman’s tongue found beneath a desk, is gruff Ennis police chief Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster). It’s the precise type of event that a small town like Ennis isn’t accustomed to handling, making the already acerbic Danvers all the pricklier and more frustrated. That’s never more apparent than with the arrival of State Trooper Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) on the scene. An unspoken history exists between the pair, lacing every interaction with venom and tension, but Navarro has a personal stake in solving the disappearances that seem tied to an unsolved cold case.

As evidence mounts and conspiracies unfurl, Danvers and Navarro make an uneasy alliance to solve the case even as forces conspire against them.

True Detective Night Country Foster

The fourth season of the series runs two episodes shorter than its predecessors, making for a much more tightly wound story without sacrificing complexity. López packs a lot in to present a fully realized town full of dark secrets and uneasy history that informs its characters and overarching mystery. It’s not the mystery that serves as the throughline, however, but the complicated relationship between Danvers and Navarro. Danvers isn’t an easy person to like. She’s intellectually superior to her Deputy, Hank Prior (John Hawkes), and she makes it known at every step. The police chief has a way of alienating almost everyone she encounters with her abrasive, standoffish personality, save for Prior’s son and fellow Officer Peter (Finn Bennett), a competent up-and-comer that Danvers coaches. Navarro is the warmer of the two, but only slightly. Driven by the need to bring justice to her cold case victim, Navarro is prone to violence and brash behavior that leaves her almost as socially irredeemable as her reluctant partner.

In lesser hands, Danvers and Navarro would polarize audiences and make it tricky to find a foothold into the season’s central investigation. Jodie Foster’s capable hands ensure that we may not always agree with Danvers, but she’s engaging, complex, and human enough to retain audience investment. Kali Reis wears Navarro’s insecurities and vulnerabilities on her sleeves, earning easy sympathies even when the character is prone to self-destruction. Both actors are helped by Issa López’s writing and subversion of archetypical roles, which creates an air of mystery behind the two leads that further draws us in and carries the season even when the investigation takes a backseat to focus on Ennis’ residents. While the season may belong to Foster and Reis, there’s not a weak link among the stellar ensemble of supporting players.

True Detective Jodie Foster Issa Lopez

There’s a fascinating structure to “Night Country.” López wastes not a second of those six episodes yet makes the proceedings feel like a slice of life in an underexplored pocket of the world and all the quirks that come with it. More importantly, the showrunner once again demonstrates keen instincts in playing with genres. “Night Country” is atmospheric and intense, toggling between supernatural chills and noirish dread with an ease that not only sets this season apart but further reels you into this unique, singular world. López offers wry winks and knowing nods to influential horror while injecting her own brand of horror without overstepping the established world of “True Detective.” Bursts of gore or emotional intensity get punctuated, on occasion, with enough levity to prevent the season from becoming too heavy or grim. Longtime fans will find plenty of connections to the original series, though occasionally a bit heavy-handed in execution.

All of it builds to one riveting, satisfying finale that helps solidify “Night Country” as an easy series highlight. López takes the series’ foundation and builds something wholly new from it through actualized characters, gripping drama, political unrest, grisly secrets, and fearlessness to veer straight into horror when needed. The exceptionally crafted season, like its icy setting, offers a breath of fresh air.

“True Detective: Night Country” premieres January 14 on HBO and Max at 9:00pm ET, with remaining episodes airing weekly on Sundays.

Chucky got lucky when we covered Ronny Yu’s Bride of Chucky and then the children got possessed (maybe?) when we discussed Jack Clayton’s The Innocents. Now it’s time to dive into one of the most well-known and controversial films ever made: Jonathan Demme‘s The Silence of the Lambs!

In the film, Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) wants Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster), a top student at the FBI’s training academy, to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a brilliant psychiatrist who is also a violent psychopath, serving life behind bars for various acts of murder and cannibalism. Crawford believes that Lecter may have insight into the case of the serial killer Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) and that Starling may be just the bait to draw him out.

The lambs have stopped screaming so we’re going all-in on Jonathan Demme’s critically-acclaimed and Oscar-winning film The Silence of the Lambs. Joining us is Reyna Cervantes, the co-host of the Horror In Session podcast!

In what is an admittedly unorthodox episode for us, we eschew a traditional plot summary in favor of a more analytical episode, looking back at the film’s development while tackling the transphobic elements of Buffalo Bill and the impact it has had on the trans community in the 30 years since the film’s release.

Plus, feminist horror, intent vs. impact, and what would a 4th season of Hannibal look like with Clarice Starling?

CBS is taking you back to 1993, a year after the events of The Silence of the Lambs, with the brand new sequel series “Clarice”, which is headed to CBS and CBS All Access tomorrow.

To celebrate the occasion, the Oscar-winning The Silence of the Lambs is currently on sale for $7.99 in 4K UHD on both Vudu and Apple TV. Its 2001 sequel Hannibal is also on sale for $7.99, but unfortunately only in HD.

In the film, Jodie Foster plays an FBI trainee assigned by her superior to interview an imprisoned, cannibalistic psychopath, Hannibal “the Cannibal” Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), in the hope that he may help uncover the identity of an elusive serial killer.

The Silence of the Lambs is one of the rare occasions when the Academy didn’t ignore our genre, awarding the film five Oscars: “Best Picture”, “Best Actress in a Leading Role” (Foster), “Best Actor in a Leading Role” (Hopkins), “Best Director” (Jonathan Demme), and “Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published” (Ted Tally).

Nicolas Roeg‘s 1990 adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches is often overlooked. It’s easily one of the best family horror films ever made, while also being the final film that the great Jim Henson ever worked on before his passing.

The British/American film is a frightening dark fantasy “comedy” about a young boy who stumbles onto a witch convention and must stop them, even after he has been turned into a mouse.

In one of the most memorable horror film performances ever, Anjelica Huston plays the coven’s Grand High Witch, who intends on turning the world’s smelly children into mice with her newly perfected potion. She’s elegant and mesmerizing, while also terrifying, making her the perfect embodiment of what Dahl’s Grand High Witch would be like. Interestingly, this could have gone in a completely different direction…

[Related] Why 1990’s The Witches is the Scariest Children’s Horror Film Ever Made

Dahl originally wanted Cher to play the role of the Grand High Witch, but she was unavailable at the time because the actress was filming Mermaids, Wiki explained. In fact, Eartha Kitt (who plays Catwoman on the “Batman” 1960’s television series), Fiona Fullerton (A View to Kill), Geneviève Bujold (Dead Ringers), Starr Andreeff (Amityville Dollhouse), Olivia Hussey (It (1990), Black Christmas), Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Aliens, Ghostbusters), Frances Conroy (“The Mist”, “American Horror Story”), and Liza Minnelli (Cabaret) were all at some point considered for the part of The Grand High Witch prior to Anjelica Huston’s casting.

IMDb adds to the list with some additional shockers that include The Exorcist‘s Linda Blair, Bonnie and Clyde‘s Faye Dunaway, Rocky Horror Picture Show‘s Susan Sarandon, The Silence of the Lambs’ Jodie Foster, and Vanessa Redgrave (Blow-Up).

Everything worked out in the end and the rest is history. Even Dahl found himself “satisfied” with Huston’s casting. It damn well better have.

What do you guys think of The Witches? If you haven’t seen it, Amazon is streaming it in HD via Prime.

Oscar-winning The Silence of the Lambs actress Jodie Foster introduced the Jonathan Demme-directed movie to an audience at the British Film Institute (BFI) over the weekend. While calling Lambs a “timeless” film that is still “relevant” today, she also dove deep into the production and revealed several actors who were considered for the now infamous role of Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

Foster told the audience that a number of U.S actors, including Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Dustin Hoffman, had been considered for the role, but that Demme wanted a Brit.

“Lecter is a manipulator and has a way of using language to keep people at bay… you wanted to see that Shakespearean monster. That’s why we jumped the pond.”

This coincides with previous stories that Demme originally approached and was turned down by Sean Connery. In fact, other actors considered for the role included Derek Jacobi and Daniel Day-Lewis.

Even more interesting, Foster admitted that she and Anthony Hopkins didn’t film together much during the shoot.

“I did the whole first part of the movie without him; he went off [after rehearsal] to go and shoot another movie. He only shot for 7 or 10 days or maybe even less. I never saw him until halfway through the movie.

“Much of the dialogue is straight to camera, a Hitchcock technique so some days I never even saw him,” she continued. “It was the last day of shooting and I was eating a tuna fish sandwich and I said ‘I was a little scared of you’ and he said ‘I was scared of you’ and then we had a big hug.”

The rest is history as The Silence of the Lambs won Academy Awards in all the top five categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Adapted Screenplay.

He was looking for a way out. She was looking for a way in. Bars couldn’t keep them apart.

Whether you feel that The Silence of the Lambs is a horror movie, a “detective thriller” or something else entirely (I’ve had this silly, totally pointless debate so many times and I really don’t care to have it again), one thing we can all agree on is that it’s most definitely not a romantic comedy. Well, at least it wasn’t originally intended to be a romantic comedy…

Thanks to some clever editing, it now is!

The folks over on CineFix just gave their “Trailer Mix” treatment to the 1991 film, and you might be surprised by how convincingly it can be turned into a rom-com with a little editing.

Said the team:

The 1991 classic is such a thrilling crime drama but wouldn’t it be as creepy and (quite frankly) hilarious if Hannibal Lecter fell in love with Detective Starling? No? Well, we think so!

Check out the fun trailer edit below!

This morning I was reading up on Oscar wins for Jonathan Demme’s 1991 The Silence of the Lambs, and that’s when I came across a shocking discovery.

While I’m sure a few of you smart-asses (I say that with love) already know this, I literally had no idea that Hannibal Lecter’s infamous quote, “I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti,” was a joke, as well as a very declarative statement.

Reddit user mrcchapman explains:

“I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.”
Great line from Silence of the Lambs everyone knows. But most people don’t realise Dr Hannibal Lecter is making a medical joke.
Lecter could be treated with drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors – MAOIs. As a psychiatrist, Lecter knows this.
The three things you can’t eat with MAOIs? Liver, beans, wine.
Lecter is a) cracking a joke for his own amusement, and b) saying he’s not taking his meds.

Another user, bICEmeister, chimes in with another deep thought:

In the book he actually said Amarone and not Chianti. Amarone would be a much better fit for liver, and a such shows off his sophistication and further strengthens just how psycho he is – making sure to pair the liver with the proper wine. The movie execs just thought that people wouldn’t know what amarone was, so they switched it out to a wine that everyone would have heard of.

A huge “thank you!” for making one of the best genre films ever even better!

Ah… hindsight. It’s always 20/20. For Gene Siskel I imagine the hindsight in this particular instance came on March 30th, 1992 when The Silence Of The Lambs won 5 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay (adapted).

Of course, there are many Academy Award winning movies I personally can’t stand (Crash being a prime example) and there’s nothing wrong with sticking to your guns just because a bunch people like something you don’t. But still, in this review he has such an amazing amount of disdain for Jonathan Demme’s 1991 masterpiece it’s a little hard to believe. Ebert seems to be fairly on board with the pic, but Siskel can’t stomach any part of it.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about this video is that Siskel sort of redeems his argument by championing Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer. Still though… this is crazy talk.

One of my personal “most anticipated” of the summer is Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, opening in theaters August 9. In it Matt Damon plays a factory worker takes on a mission to hijack his way onto a man-made space habitat. While we haven’t had a chance to check out the sci-fi actioneer yet, a slew of first reviews hit the Web early Thursday morning. While it appears the action will keep you munching on your popcorn, your brain allegedly will go numb from all of the metaphors. Spoiler Warning.

Variety says that District 9 writer-director Neill Blomkamp “delivers a less dazzling but absorbing and intelligent bit of futurism,” adding, “Yet if Elysium falls short as social commentary, as entertainment it rarely falters. The final act, a breathless cat-and-mouse game inside Elysium’s industrial core.”

“Bang go the guns, ka-boom go the metaphors,” TheWrap jokes. “In his follow-up to District 9, Blomkamp once again delivers on the action while over-delivering on the message. Still, as an effects-laden action piece, Elysium delivers the goods. It might not be the thinking man’s fill-in-the-blank that some viewers were eagerly anticipating, but it’s a solid adventure that oversells its deeper meanings.”

The Hollywood Reporter adds: “Vivid visuals and a pointedly political context are let down by conventional action and conceptual limitations in another big budget Sony shortfaller.” But they do give major props to Damon for his performance, even though his “upgrades” limit him physically. “His noggin shaved, Damon comes off credibly as a ticking time bomb in the early-going but becomes unduly constrained by his metal apparatus later on.” They also thought the design of the film’s future was poorly conceived, adding, “Conceptually as well, Blomkamp has failed to take the extra step with both the ruling class and the denizens of the lower depths; despite the fact that the action is set 131 years hence, both look exactly as they do now.“

A brand new poster has been released for District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming dystopian epic Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. Once again, it puts Damon’s head in the forefront, while telling us that he could save us all…

In theaters August 9, “In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the planet’s crime and poverty, and they critically need the state-of-the-art medical care available on Elysium – but some in Elysium will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve their citizens’ luxurious lifestyle. The only man with the chance bring equality to these worlds is Max, an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission – one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt and her hard-line forces — but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.”

Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, William Fichtner, Alice Braga and Diego Luna also star.

Escape the crime, pollution, and misery of Earth. Apply now for a better, happier, more luxurious life. Elysium, it’s better up there.

That’s the kickstart of Columbia Pictures’ viral campaign for Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, which makes me think of the utopia promised in the “BioShock” games.

In theaters August 9, “In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. I seriously think some of us need to wake the hell up and pay attention here.

Sure, Pacific Rim and the other big summer movies are taking up all of our ADHS attention spans, but we really shouldn’t be ignoring Elysium, Neill Blomkamp’s follow up to his masterful District 9. In theaters August 9, the chatter around the sci-fi thriller is deafening, which means either the movie looks bad, or the studio needs to boost the film’s awareness. I go with the latter as we desperately need new images and a flippin’ new trailer already. At this point, I’m starting to think Sony’s going to bump it. Although, August is still a few months away, I’m sure the goodies will start exploding out of the gate, and maybe this LA Times photo is just the starting point. Let’s hope because this movie looks and sounds awesome.

“In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming dystopian epic Elysium, starring Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, finally has a trailer. It’s been around 9 months since I saw the footage at SDCC, but it was so fun and unique the film hasn’t strayed far from my radar since then. This trailer does a great job of selling the gleaming sci-fi rich vs. the teeming poor masses thing, but it doesn’t really indicate how splattery this movie is (or at least the bits I’ve seen). It is Blomkamp, after all.

Kicking off this massive afternoon of news, Zac Efron, pictured, and Akiva Goldsman are teaming up for a mystery supernatural project at Warner Bros. titled The Falling, says THR. Efron will star in the film and produce via his Warners-based Ninjas Runnin’ Wild Productions and Goldsman’s Weed Road banner. Also on board to produce are husband-and-wife team Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold of Safehouse Pictures. Every effort is being made to protect the logline of the project, which is being described as “an edgy thriller centering around an otherworldly being.” The idea originated within the studio, which then presented it Goldsman and Efron. Goldsman and Harold, the screenwriter who worked on Warners’ upcoming Tom Cruise sci-fi movie All You Need Is Kill, then hammered out a story.

Simply Jodie has leaked out a trio of looks at Jodie Foster in Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium, in theaters August 9. “In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) will stop at nothing to preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium – but that doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in by any means they can. Max (Matt Damon) agrees to take on a life-threatening mission, one that could bring equality to these polarized worlds.”

Twitch is reporting that Wolf Creek 2 is finally a go! The site reports that Gregg McLean returns and that principle photography is already underway in Australia. John Jarratt, as reported multiple times, returns as the franchise villain. In the film, “While seeking an authentic Australian adventure, one unlucky backpacker learns the deepest, darkest secrets of the Outback’s most infamous serial killer.”

Lastly, inside we’ve added a new TV Spot for The Last Exorcism Part II, in theaters March 1. The Last Exorcism sequel follows Nell (Ashley Bell) who, six months after the first film’s events, has move to a halfway house only to realize that the demon that has ruined her life is still after her!

The second still, shared by Screen Crush, is another look at Damon with his alien-vaporizing firepower called the Chemrail.

The movie’s title refers to a space station that, with Earth a ruined , poverty-stricken shell in the year 2154, transports the wealthy serenely in orbit.

“In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.“

Sony/TriStar has made a few major dafe shifts moving District 9 director Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium from March 1, 2013 to August 9, 2013. This can be seen as a vote of confidence in the film, maybe the execs think it can hold its own in the summertime.

In even worse news, Elysium is snatching up RoboCop‘s old slot, which MGM has pushed all the way back to February 7, 2014. This can be seen as the studio almost kind of dumping the film, which is weird since they’re still shooting. Maybe I’m wrong, but this isn’t a great sign for RoboCop.

In Elysium, “In the year 2159, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth.

With RoboCop, director Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) reimagines the tale of part man, part machine, all cop starring Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) as the title character, Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises) as the scientist who creates RoboCop, and Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers) as media mogul Pat Novak. Peter Weller played the character in the original and the 1990 sequel.

On Friday the 13th Sony Pictures took to Hall H to share three upcoming titles with San Diego Comic-Con attendees – one of which blew the roof off the place.

Stars Matt Damon (pictured) and Jodie Foster joined director Neill Blomkamp and producer Simon Kinberg on stage to share the insanely gory first footage from Elysium. Inside you’ll find Evan Dickson’s report from the panel alongside video interviews with all four attendees!

The panel also focused on two other genre titles, the forthcoming Len Wiseman-directed Total Recall (in theaters August 3) and Rian Johnson’s insane time travel thriller Looper (September 28), starring Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt.

Dickson recaps the footage and panel presentation inside.

TOTAL RECALL

Next up Len Wiseman took the stage to introduce Total Recall. Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel and Brian Cranston accompanied him shortly thereafter and they pretty much immediately launched into an extended 6 minute trailer for the film.

Now, I’ve been extremely hard on the early trailers for the film. I think it looks like a completely neutered version of the original, with all of the satire and edgy violence removed. The footage I saw was actually something of an improvement. I was a little impressed with the scope of what Wiseman is trying to pull off and admired some shots and some of the action. That’s really what this chunk of footage featured more than the existing trailers. Action. I actually caught myself thinking that I might even like this movie on some level, and I might like it a lot more if it didn’t have the Total Recall title and story. There was some cool stuff that looked like it could have been thrilling in a different setting. But for every new beat, there was a callback to the original. The three-breasted woman is there – though I’m not sure where she got the extra breast from if there’s no Mars mutants in the movie. It also looks like, due to the PG13 rating, she will only be seen from the cleavage up. There’s also a callback to the “3 days” customs bit from the original, but it only served to remind me that this was a remake and diminished whatever enthusiasm I had for the footage,

All in all – Total Recall looks like it could be a slick and entertaining ride. But it also looks like something of an empty cash grab. Devoid of anything new to say.

LOOPER and ELYSIUM

The emptiness of Total Recall as a sci-fi film was easily illustrated by the next two panels on the docket. While there isn’t much in that way of horror as far as Looper is concerned, it does look like a truly original take on time travel. Thoughtful, action packed and full of rich character work – this is the kind of sci-fi film many of us have been dying for since Inception.

Something that definitely falls under the categories of “bloody” and “disgusting” is Elysium. Director Neill Blomkamp was brought onstage to introduce the footage – which had never been seen before. We were warned that it had very rough pre-viz level effects but – except for a few glaring examples regarding space travel – a lot of the effects work seemed finished.

The footage established Earth in the year 2154. A barren, global ghetto marred by disease, overpopulation and crushing poverty. The rich people built their own planet-like space station – Elysium – years ago and there they exist in utter opulence and luxury. Free of disease and free of worry.

Damon’s character is an ex-con who gets radiation poisoning at work and knows he will die in 5 days if he doesn’t do something about it. He knows that the only way he can be cured will be to somehow get into the heavily guarded Elysium. In order to get there, he agrees to complete a mission that involves stealing the memory of a character played by the great William Fichtner. Getting geared up for this mission means a nasty piece of bone-saw surgery into Damon’s skull (apparently without pain killers) where a highly intrusive device is implanted that will enable him to download Fichtner’s brain.

Along for the ride is an almost unrecognizable Sharlto Copley (the “hero” from District 9), who looks sort of like a homeless ninja. He literally has throwing stars that make people explode in a gory, gooey and messy fashion. We only got a few glimpses of Jodie Foster’s character, a severe but mysterious looking woman that didn’t appear to be too far off from something that Tilda Swinton might play.

All in all, the movie looks super violent, not unlike early Paul Verhoeven stuff like RoboCop and the original Total Recall. It also has some nice commentary about the haves and the have-nots – sort of an uber-extrapolation of the 99% vs the 1% concept. Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and producer Simon Kinberg came out for the panel where they basically sang the praises of Blomkamp and declared that they would have done the film script unseen because of District 9 alone. Oh, and Jodie Foster declared that her favorite movie of all time is Team America: World Police. Not a bad choice!

Elysium is Blomkamp’s long-awaited story set in the far future on another planet and, like District 9, is filled with many sociopolitical ideas wrapped up inside a Hollywood action film.

In addition, early rumors circulated that the plot will actually follow a battle between an alien and human race for the right to colonize another planet. There are some very relevant political themes hidden within there…

We don’t normally report on fan-made posters here, but director Kimberly Pierce (Boys Don’t Cry, Stop Loss) has given the thumbs up to this fan poster for her upcoming remake of Carrie starring Chloe Moretz. Clearly, she’s jazzed to be taking on the film. Some outlets have reported that Pierce herself made this poster, but we don’t believe that to be the case.

The story centers on “Carrie White, who is raised by a nightmarish religious fanatic mother, and comes to grip with devastating telepathic powers just as she reaches puberty. She eventually uses those gifts for lethal means when fellow classmates use the prom as an excuse to humiliate her before the entire school in a parable about bullying.”

Sissy Spacek played the character in the first movie, with Piper Laurie playing her mother, and Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, John Travolta, Betty Buckley and William Katt rounding out the cast. Both Spacek and Laurie got Oscar nominations for their work in the 1976 film.

What do you think? Does this poster get you stoked for Moretz as Carrie? Or could you do without?

Wow. Casting for the lead in Sony/MGM’s remake of Stephen King’s Carrie is down to two very different choices. Chloe Grace Moretz (pictured above; Kick Ass, Let Me In) and Haley Bennett (pictured below; Lawless).

Per Vulture, “now we’re told the field has narrowed to two main contenders: the 15-year-old Chloë Moretz (Kick-Ass) and the 24-year-old Haley Bennett… we also hear that earlier this week, The Descendants’ Shailene Woodley passed on an offer from MGM to take the title role.” Apparently Jodie Foster has been offered the role of Carrie’s mother but there’s no word yet on if she’ll do it.

Kimberly Peirce is directing the redo of King’s thriller “about the telekinetic teenager who gets pushed too far at the prom and wreaks havoc on her fellow high school students,” .Carrie was previously turned into the 1976 film that starred Sissy Spacek, John Travolta and Amy Irving, with Piper Laurie as the repressive mother.

The new script has been written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

Before District 9 came out, Neill Blomkamp was mainly recognized as “that guy who almost made Halo.” Here we are two years later, with one of the best sci-fi films of the last decade under his belt and Elysium undergoing production right now.

With the cast Blomkamp assembled and the amount of goodwill he’s built up, I imagine a lot of crew members and “passersby” will conveniently have cameras on them, especially since the plot is still vague and hush-hush. Case in point: these photos of a bald and bloodied Matt Damon wearing an exoskeletal apparatus of some sort.

Not much is known about the film, other than it being set in the far future on another planet where it’s rumored that humans and aliens are battling for the right to colonize, so it’s hard to guess what’s going on in these pics. The gear looks like it might be a brace or life support system (they are colonizing another planet…), or maybe it’s the remnants of a bigger suit that was damaged in battle. Whatever it is, we’ll find out on March 01, 2013.
