Yeah, I know, the title is a bit on the nose, especially after Sony managed to torpedo their own Spidey franchise not once, but twice within the past 14 years.  Now, after a few cinematic duds, our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has returned home to Marvel.  Hence “Homecoming”.  Okay, it might actually grow on me.  Besides, it’s at least more personal than the often-rumored “The Next Avenger” subtitle.

The title was finally revealed tonight at CinemaCon and here’s the official logo (courtesy of Germain Lussier)…

Not much is known about this MCU-sanctioned Spidey flick as of yet.  We know that it is being helmed by Jon Watts (Clown, Cop Car) and that the last known draft of the script was penned by John Francis Daley & Jonathan M. Goldstein (Vacation).  We know that Tom Holland will be reprising the role of Spider-Man from Civil War.  We know that Marisa Tomei has been cast as Aunt May Parker and Zendaya as someone named Michelle.  There are rumors that Robert Downey Jr. will appear in some fashion as Iron Man, that Hugh Laurie is the front-runner for prickly news editor J. Jonah Jameson, and that Vulture is rumored to be one of the villains, although none of this has been confirmed.

Mostly, we just know that we are getting a brand new Spider-Man movie on July 28, 2017 and that it’ll be lovingly put to screen by Marvel themselves.  Will they knock it out of the park?  I hope so.  Reactions to Holland’s take on the character from those who have seen Civil War have been almost universally positive, which is certainly encouraging.  As they say, the third time’s a charm.  Let’s hope that holds true here.

You play kind of a sell-out in this movie. What’s your access point for that?

Oh yeah! Well it’s that whole thing of I could never really have fun playing a character I totally hate. You find the place where you’re, if not relating to him, sympathetic. And it’s that scene at the pool where I’m mistaken for a pool contractor by the Anti-Christ. And I think that’s something everyone can relate to, being found out in front of people that matter. We’re all afraid that we’re going to be found out.

How was it working with Craig Robinson again after Hot Tub Time Machine?

What a drag. What a drag! Craig Robinson again in Vancouver, he’s like the mayor of that town. No, there’s nothing that’s not insanely fun about doing anything with Craig.

In the movie you’re vying to be in with the Anti-Christ. If you were to become him in real life, what’s the first thing you’d do?

Oh my God I would smite, rape and pillage. I would do my duty to the best of my ability. I’m a hard worker, I’m productive and efficient. I would be the best Anti-Christ ever! I wouldn’t be one of these movie Anti-Christs that’s like Damien who’s just being handsome. I’d be completely ruthless.

I have to ask about the PCP in the salsa line, was that from you or was that in the script? Was that from Titanic?

Pretty much all the scenes with me and Huebel are us bullsh*tting. Yes, it was from Titanic. There was a guy on set that was there when that happened [when the crew of Titanic ate chowder spiked with PCP].

Warm Bodies made over $100 Million at the worldwide box office and Isaac Marion is writing a sequel to the book. Have you heard anything about going back up to Montreal for a Warm Bodies 2?

Oh my God, I live with my fingers crossed. That would be so awesome. I can’t imagine what the sequel would be, but who cares? The answer is yes. Montreal is my favorite town in the world. What surprises me [about that film] is the lack of backlash. I expected there to be a significant amount of dudes who weren’t going to go see that because it’s “another Twilight” or zombie fans who just said, “no.” But it was embraced by people once they realized it wasn’t just a “chick movie.” It’s the first movie I’ve been in that was a hit!

You play sort of a dominant/submissive relationship in this movie. Did that take a while to cement or did it come naturally to you?

Huebel: That wasn’t even in the script. That just came out.

Robinson: That came through improv and stuff. And we did some other ridiculous stuff where I had a hypnotic hold on him.

Huebel: A Darth Vader stranglehold.

Robinson: And later it was going to be revealed that I didn’t have that hold on him.

Huebel: This is just one of those movies where we were given free reign to improvise a lot and we thought it would be funny if he could really use his Anti-Christ powers over me. Just the worst boss ever.

How is it playing the Anti-Christ?

Robinson: Lionsgate sent me the script and I dug it. I saw how much fun the character was gonna have, and I dug it.

Huebel: It’s also good that you got to it before Daniel Day Lewis.

Craig, you’ve got two apocalypse movies coming out a few weeks from each other. Do you know something we don’t?

Robinson: I’m not supposed to talk about it but I will, I don’t know anything. This Is The End was shot last year, but Rapture-Palooza was shot two years ago. What was interesting about them is that when we were doing this one, that minister had predicted that the world was going to end. And then of course when we shot This Is The End, the Mayan calendar predicted the world was going to end then as well.

Huebel: If we keep shooting apocalyptic movies eventually we’re going to be right.

The Anti-Christ promises Anna Kendrick no anal on the first date. Can we infer that he’s a class act?

Robinson: Absolutely. That’s something you want to slide into on the second date. He feels like he’s being charming and classy.

Rob, a lot of your comedic roles from I Love You, Man to The Other Guys have a puffed up bravado to them. But you also have a softer comedic presence in something like The Descendants. Where would you say your actual comedic voice lies?

Huebel: You know, I like to do both of those things. I love to play douchebags and *ssholes. I have a couples of brothers and we just grew up making fun of guys who were loud, cocky jerks. I think that’s really funny, but you can’t make a living just doing that. So when you get lucky enough to work with someone like Alexander Payne, that’s just a really different kind of movie. That’s a very different tone. It’s fun to go back and forth.

Craig, a couple of posters for your film Peeples feature one of the killers for another Lionsgate film coming out in August called You’re Next…

Robinson: I heard about that. There’s a crossover for Temptation as well. I heard about that too. There is a Peeples poster out where you have a family dressed for a nice family picture on the beach and in the front I’m buried up to my head in sand. So it looks like they decapitated me and put me there… it’s a weird way to promote a comedy. I haven’t seen it yet, it sounds pretty interesting.
