We’re nearly done with our first month of “Underseen or Underrated” on Horror Queers and it’s been a blast going year by year through the 2010s, beginning with Scream 4 (2011) and American Mary (2012). For 2013, we’re joined by Boom Howdy and Horrorversary’s Adrian Torres for a dip into Rob Zombie territory with his most subdued film, The Lords of Salem, co-starring his wife Sheri Moon and a bevy of iconic genre actors!

In the film, late-night radio DJ host Heidi (Moon Zombie) is sent a bizarre record by local band The Lords which only affects the female population of Salem, MA. As Heidi begins experiencing visions of the infamous witch trials and the death of Margaret Morgan (Meg Foster), Heidi’s landlady Lacy (Judy Geeson) and her “sisters” Sonny (Dee Wallace) and Megan (Patricia Quinn) begin breaking down Heidi’s defenses in anticipation of whatever lurks inside the mysterious Apartment #5.

The post The Polarizing Oddity of ‘The Lords of Salem’ [Horror Queers Podcast] appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

After Halloween and Halloween II, Rob Zombie wanted to shake things up. Do something original with more creative freedom. Enter 2012’s The Lords of Salem, an atmospheric tale of witchcraft and devil worship set right in the heart of history’s favorite witch spot- Salem, Massachusetts. Like most of Zombie’s films, reactions proved extremely divisive upon initial release. Whether you love or hate it, it’s hard to argue about the film’s sumptuous style. It’s Zombie’s most stunning film yet. His grimy and mean version of witches offers up a unique take on the subgenre, too. Meg Foster is incredible in this.

Synopsis: Heidi is a local radio DJ in Salem. One day she’s sent a mysterious wooden box, a gift from “the Lords,” containing a record. When it’s played backwards, it triggers flashbacks in Heidi of the town’s violent past. As these flashbacks seem to plague Heidi with disturbing images more and more, it begs the question of whether she’s going mad or if the Lords are coming back to enact vengeance upon Salem.

Key Players: Sheri Moon Zombie stars as Heidi, the suffering radio DJ. Heidi’s radio show co-hosts Whitey and Herman are played by Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ken Foree, respectively. Exposition on the town’s history and its central curse falls to Salem witch trial expert Francis Matthias, played by Bruce Davison. Judy Geeson, Patricia Quinn, and Dee Wallace portray Heidi’s witchy neighbors, and Meg Foster is downright fierce as coven leader Margaret Morgan.

Why It’s on the List: The Lords of Salem is a change of pace for Zombie; it looks and feels different from the rest of his films, even if it’s still a throwback to his favorite decade in horror. It’s a visual feast for the eyes, too, full of ambitious cinematography and production design. The occult witchcraft scheme by way of record played backward isn’t new, but Zombie presents it with his own style. Look for tons of references to ‘70s and ‘80s Satanic horror, from Rosemary’s Baby to The Dunwich Horror, and more. It’s worth mentioning yet again how utterly captivating and chilling Meg Foster is in this movie. Being that it’s been 7 years since initial release, and Zombie has released 31 and 3 from Hell in the span, does time change reception to this movie?

Burn the Witch: It’s hell on Earth for the witches of Salem…and their witch hunters.

Where You Can Watch: The Lords of Salem is currently available to stream for free with ads on Tubi, Roku, and Vudu streaming apps. It’s also available on Mubi.

The post It’s Psycho-Head and Schizo-Head In Rob Zombie’s ’31’! appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

This morning he told his loyal followers that there’s only two days left of filming, and as a treat shared a first glimpse at Judy Geeson as ‘Sister Dragon’, who runs Murder World alongside ‘Father Murder’ (Malcom McDowell), owner of the park.

In addition, below is some more old concept art showing three characters to be featured in 31.

“31 follows five carnival workers who are kidnapped the night before Halloween and held hostage in a large secret compound known as Murder World.

Once there, they have 12 hours to survive a terrifying game called 31 in which ‘The Heads’- murderous maniacs dressed as clowns – are released to hunt them down and kill them.”

Jeff Daniel Phillips will play ‘Roscoe’, the ass-kicking carney mechanic of Venus Virgo’s traveling show.

Malcolm McDowell plays ‘Father Murder’, the owner of Murder World for which the film is based.

Judy Geeson plays ‘Sister Dragon’, who runs Murder World alongside McDowell. She joins David Ury, who will be playing ‘Schizo-Head’, one half of murderous team of brothers living inside Murder World. Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs was recently cast as ‘Panda Thomas’, with Elizabeth Daily (E.G. Daily) playing ‘Sex-head’, and Torsten Voges as the insane partner of Death-Head. Ginger Lynn is featured as ‘Cherry Bomb’, a very special friend of Doom-Head (portrayed by Richard Brake), as was Jane Carr, who will portray ‘Sister Serpent’, a wicked cross of Satan meets Mother Goose. Pancho Moler will be seen as ‘Sick-Head’, and Tracy Walter stars as ‘Lucky Leo.’

Daniel Roebuck plays ‘Paster Victor’, an unfortunate participant in last year’s game of 31.

Lew Temple, Devin Sidell and Sheri Moon Zombie also star.

The post ‘The Lords of Salem’ Star Rejoins Rob Zombie In ’31’ appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

Local rock radio DJ and recovering drug addict Heidi Hawthorne co-hosts a show with “the two Hermans” in modern day Salem, Massachusetts. One day, Heidi receives a mysterious wooden box containing a vinyl record from “The Lords”. Heidi and one of the Hermans play the record, which causes Heidi to have flashbacks of torture and witchcraft from Salem’s past. A local historian, Francis Matthias, takes a keen interest in the package, and after investigating, discovers a link between it, an old coven of witches and the Hawthorne bloodline. It seems that the witches who were burned at the stake by Heidi’s ancestor, Reverend Jonathan Hawthorne, are trying to return to fulfill a centuries-old curse placed upon the Salem’s women.

Zombie has always had an eye for the look of his films, and The Lords Of Salem is no exception. Grimy, dark and oozing with atmosphere, the film’s cinematography is something to behold. Rob has taken more than a few cues from films like The Shining and Rosemary’s Baby with regards to the camera, and has crafted something that is definitely disturbing in its presentation. It also helps that this is a slow burner, building up the unsettling feelings of dread. Gore-wise, there’s certainly less that what you’d expect from Rob, as this time around it’s more of the disturbing visuals and atmosphere. We still do get a bit of the red stuff, so it’s not totally bloodless.

As far as the acting goes, fans of the genre will get a kick out of the horror veterans doing their stuff and loving it. Judy Gleeson, Patricia Quinn and Dee Wallace as the trio of modern witches are a treat to see, and are quite eerie. Ken Foree is charming as Whitey, while Jeff Daniel Phillips’ beard does most of the acting for Phillips. Bruce Davison is fine as Matthias, though the guy needs to watch out for frying pans. And any time you have Michael Berryman and Sid Haig doing cameos is a good time. As for Mrs. Zombie, well that’s another issue…

I tiptoed around the issue of Sherri Moon Zombie for a reason. While she’s gorgeous and oft-naked in many of Rob Zombie’s films (The Lords Of Salem is no exception), she’s not what you’d call a great actress. While it’s great that Rob wants to give work to his wife, she definitely isn’t leading actor material. She’s wooden in much of her performance, and much of the time she’s onscreen is spent doing nothing that really moves the story forward.

In the final act of the film, Rob once again goes off the rails with his art-house imagery, throwing weird stuff on the screen for no reason other than it being weird. It’s that masturbation thing of his again. It confuses and disorients more than shocks and disturbs. Honestly, it’s this sort of thing that has had me wondering whether I truly like his stuff. Don’t get me wrong, Zombie has talent. But his need to feed his ego by continually casting his wife and genre vets for the sake of going “Hey! Look what I did!” is not the way to go. He really needs to have someone steer the ship before he ends up pulling this again and again.

So once the credits roll, The Lords Of Salem left me in much the same way I’ve been left with many of Rob’s films: puzzled. While Rob’s eye behind the camera is something I relish along with his scenes of brutality, his other decisions in self-indulgence leave me rolling my eyes and wondering when the film is going to end. I know that there are some of you Rob Zombie fans who love his stuff no matter what we critics say, and that’s fine. Support and love the man. He’s trying his damnedest to give the genre something new. As for myself, I’m just going to sit and wait for Rob to finally get over himself and make a film that doesn’t end up stroking his ego.

Video/Audio:

Say what you will about Zombie as a director, but the man knows his visuals. In spite of the film’s low budget, The Lords Of Salem looks damn fine. Presented in 2.39:1, the 1080p AVC-encoded transfer has a fair level of intentional grain, but the grain actually helps emphasize the grimy look Zombie aimed for. Details and textures are excellent, with flesh tones looking natural, even with the low light presentation.

As for the audio, the Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless soundtrack reflects the grimy visuals with the appropriately rough industrial sounds. Dialogue is clear and free of distortion, while ambient effects help to give a great sense of the environment. Bass is a little on the heavy side, at times, but it kind of goes hand-in-hand with the music. A great compliment to the visuals.

Extras:

The only extra on the disc is an audio commentary with writer/producer/director Rob Zombie. Like Rob’s other commentaries, he come across as a guy who’s done his homework and is full of information about his films. Rob spends the track going over the story and its characters, locations, cast and performances, music and score, the editing process, cinematography, and more. It’s an entertaining track, though depending on your position on the film, it’s probably not going to change your mind whether you loved or hated it.

The only other extra (aside from the DVD and Ultraviolet copies of the film) is a lenticular slipcover replicating the cover art for the Blu-Ray.

Overall, this is a great audio/visual package, but is really lacking in the extras department, in spite of Rob’s excellent commentary.

Per Brad, “It would be easy to give Lords a pass. It has genuinely creepy imagery, cool scares, super crazy sound design, and even more mind blowing set designs. But there will be no pass, mainly because of the awkwardly unfulfilling ending and the fact that much of the “cool” doesn’t interact with the characters or plot.”

Per Mike, “For 100 minutes, I was taken away to another place and the usual insistence in basic storytelling and character eluded me. In this case, the style is the substance.”

Struggling with her newfound sobriety and creeping depression, Heidi suddenly receives an anonymous gift at the station-a mysteriously shaped wooden box branded with a strange symbol. Inside the box is a promotional record for a band that identifies themselves only as The Lords. There is no other information. She decides to play it on the radio show as a joke, and the moment she does, horrible things begin to happen. The strange music awakens something evil in the town. The Lords of Salem ran the town with an iron fist, but four witches who were tortured and killed in secrecy vowed that one day they would be back for revenge.”

Still no word on a release, but it’s worth noting that the Toronto International Film Festival is coming up. It’s quite possible that, since Insidious premiered there, we’ll see Zombie’s latest being snatched up.

Rob Zombie posted a few new pictures from the set of The Lords of Salem this afternoon – and I’m not entirely sure what to make of them.

One features a Kiss-esque dude holding a sword over a pentagram. That’s pretty much Rob Zombie’s aesthetic in a nutshell. The other just has a goat. I imagine some kind of ritual will befall this little fella.

The Lords Of Salem stars Bruce Davison, Meg Foster, Ernest Thomas, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Torsten Voges, Bruce Dern, Sheri Moon Zombie, Dee Wallace, Billy Drago, Richard Lynch, Lisa Marie, Maria Conchita Alonso, Ken Foree Christopher Knight, and Patricia Quinn.

With day 17 underway, Rob Zombie continues to jam his The Lords of Salem cast with collectible names that you’d see at a local horror convention. This morning he revealed that he will once again be working with genre fav Sid Haig (House of 1,000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects, Halloween) who will play “Dean Magnus”, the other half of the witch finding duo known as “The Brothers.”

Sid is best known for cult classics like Spiderbaby, Coffy, Black Mama, White Mama, CC and Company and The Big Dollhouse.

Meg Foster, Ernest Thomas, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Torsten Voges, Bruce Dern, Sheri Moon Zombie, Dee Wallace, Billy Drago, Richard Lynch, Lisa Marie, Maria Conchita Alonso, Ken Foree, Bruce Davidson, Christopher Knight, Michael Berryman also star.

Hopefully Zombie will release another image from set soon. “The story is about a local DJ who mistakenly unleashes a hellish curse on the town. 300 years earlier on the very streets of Salem that the townspeople walk on today, innocent folks were rounded up from their homes, convicted of being witches and sentenced to death.
