Colin Trevorrow pulled off the impossible in 2015 with Jurassic World, as he brought a 14-year big-screen drought for the beloved Jurassic Park franchise to an end and injected new life into it. Even if critics weren’t entirely impressed, the movie took in a whopping $1.67 billion worldwide, compared to Jurassic Park III‘s $368.7 million in 2001. This injected enough enthusiasm to ensure the franchise would stick around for years to come.

Last year, Gareth Edwards helmed Jurassic World Rebirth, and while it didn’t reach the financial heights of its predecessors, it successfully found a new formula for the series that took the excitement out of a park and into the wild. While a sequel is on the way, Edwards ended up leaving the project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom director J.A. Bayona is a frontrunner to helm the upcoming sequel. Rebirth stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey are all expected to return.

Since launching in 1993, the Jurassic Park franchise has seen its ups and downs, to say the least. The original Steven Spielberg-directed movie is nothing short of revolutionary, with his directorial talents managing to entirely elevate the campy concept of dinosaurs being brought back to life. Spielberg returned for the sequel and, while still a financial success, The Lost World: Jurassic Park didn’t resonate quite as strongly with critics. Joe Johnston directed Jurassic Park III, which continued the diminishing returns of the series, resulting in the franchise’s stagnation.

Jurassic World was a financial sensation, though anyone old enough to remember the original movie couldn’t help but criticize how similar it felt to the original movie and how it didn’t deliver as much freshness into the concept as many had hoped. Fallen Kingdom, however, leaned much more into the realm of monster movies, including a thrilling chase through a creepy mansion as our heroes evaded deadly dinosaurs in its finale.

Bayona took a much bigger swing with his horror-inspired narrative, and while it didn’t earn as strong of reviews as what came before him, it still took in $1.3 billion worldwide. Trevorrow would then return to the series for Jurassic World: Dominion, which largely closed the book on the characters from both the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World series.

Given that Edwards’ breakout movie was 2014’s Godzilla, he similarly approached Rebirth as a monster movie more than anything else. Bayona’s penchant for big swings could make him the perfect choice to continue this narrative, and we’d rather a filmmaker who takes bigger risks at the helm than someone who repeats what’s already been done.

The Jurassic World Rebirth sequel doesn’t yet have a release date.

Would you like to see Bayona return? Let us know in the comments below!

Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) brought the Jurassic World franchise back to the big screen last year with Jurassic World Rebirth, which stomped its way to $869 million at the worldwide box office. Needless to say, this franchise is still incredibly popular with audiences, and Deadline confirms that a new Jurassic film is in development.

According to a new report from the outlet tonight, however, Gareth Edwards will not be returning to direct the next installment in the Jurassic World movie franchise.

Deadline details, “Insiders say the decision was made due to creative differences and Gareth Edwards will now focus on other original projects he is developing as the studio begins to open up the search for a new director.” Universal Studios released the following statement to the outlet: “We had an incredible experience working with Gareth on Jurassic World Rebirth.”

Deadline goes on to explain that Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali are expected to return for the Rebirth sequel, with David Koepp again writing the script.

Universal could begin filming the next Jurassic movie as early as next year.

Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

Jurassic World Rebirth was something of a reboot for the franchise, getting back to basics and moving on from any characters previously featured in the Park and World trilogies.

In Jurassic World Rebirth…

A covert extraction team races to the most dangerous place on Earth, an island research facility where dinosaurs too deadly for the original Jurassic Park were left behind. Their mission: collect DNA from three colossal creatures to unlock a drug with huge benefits for humanity. In a terrain populated by perils, they will make a shocking discovery that has been hidden for years.

A course correction for the franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth is now available on Digital at home ahead of a physical media release from Universal on September 9, and we’ve got an exclusive sneak peek at one of the film’s bonus features to share with you this week.

From the behind-the-scenes featurette entitled Jurassic World Rebirth: Hatching a New Era, the clip focuses on the creature design of the Distortus Rex, an all-new dino creation.

Whether or not the Distortus Rex is actually a “dinosaur” is up for debate – for what it’s worth, visual effects supervisor David Vickery calls it a “creature” and says he “can’t call it a dinosaur because it’s not” – it’s one of the most monstrous creations from the franchise to date, intentionally designed to look like a mix between a Xenomorph and a Rancor from Star Wars.

Director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) told Empire, “It’s kind of like if the T-Rex was designed by H.R. Giger, and then that whole thing had sex with a Rancor. It’s a design that I was really happy with. I’d like to buy the toy of it when it comes out.”

Watch our exclusive featurette below to see how the D-Rex came to life on screen.

From executive producer Steven Spielberg, the seventh installment in the dinosaur franchise is directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One) and written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible). The full Special Features package includes…

  • Audio Commentary with Director Gareth Edwards, Production Designer James Clyne, and First Assistant Director Jack Ravenscroft
  • Audio Commentary with Director Gareth Edwards, Editor Jabez Olssen, and Visual Effects Supervisor David Vickery
  • Alternate Opening
  • 2 Deleted Scenes: “Raptors” and “Mutadon Attack”
  • Jurassic World Rebirth: Hatching a New Era
    • The World Evolves – Journey into a reimagined Jurassic World with Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali and the rest of the cast and filmmakers.
    • Off the Deep End – Dive into the thrilling ocean sequence and learn about the challenges of shooting on open water, the one-of-a-kind gimbal used to toss around the Essex and Mariposa, and the VFX wizardry that brought the Mosasaurus and Spinosaurs to life.
    • Trekking Through Thailand – Follow the cast and crew’s footsteps as they navigate the challenges of shooting in exotic jungles, beaches, and tall grass fields that become home to the Titanosaurs.
    • Rex in the Rapids – Brace for a T. rex encounter that’s different than anything experienced before with a nail-biting river chase recreated from Michael Crichton’s original Jurassic Park novel.
    • Don’t Look Down – Soar into the Quetzalcoatlus sequence with Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Bechir Sylvain as they train for and shoot their cliff rappelling scenes.
    • Mini-Mart Mayhem – Go inside the heart-stopping third act of Jurassic World Rebirth and witness the process of crafting sets that allow the movie’s mutant dinosaurs to step out of nightmare-inspired designs and stop on an exhilarating rampage.

  • Gag Reel

The beloved franchise, which has immersed audiences in a world of dinosaurs for over three decades and grossed more than $6.7 billion dollars at the global box office and counting, evolves in an ingenuous new direction with Jurassic World Rebirth. A new era is born.

Jurassic World Rebirth introduces a new world of characters, brought to life by a cast led by action superstar Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow, The Avengers), Jonathan Bailey (Wicked, “Bridgerton”) and two-time Oscar® winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book).

The bar for the Jurassic World franchise is sky high at the box office, with all three previous Jurassic World movies crossing $1 billion at the worldwide box office. They paved the way for Jurassic World Rebirth this past holiday weekend, the seventh installment in the franchise.

The good news for Universal is that Jurassic World Rebirth has once again proven this franchise is bulletproof, with the back-to-basics film from director Gareth Edwards stomping its way to a massive $318.3 million at the global box office across Fourth of July Weekend. That includes $147.3 million that was made from 4,308 theaters here in the United States.

Internationally, Rebirth scared up $171 million across its opening weekend.

Jurassic World Rebirth was #1 at the domestic box office for the weekend, with the film’s three-day traditional opening weekend hitting $91.5 million in the States. How does that compare to the three previous JW movies? Jurassic World opened to $208 million domestically in 2015, followed by Fallen Kingdom with $148 million and Dominion with $145 million.

That gives Rebirth the lowest domestic opening weekend for the Jurassic World saga to date, though $318.3 million is actually its second best global debut behind the first Jurassic World. The news is all around quite good for Universal, with Rebirth proving that this franchise still has a lot of life left in it. But will it match the billion dollar worldwide total of its predecessors when all is said and done? Keep your eyes peeled for fresh updates in the coming weeks.

The reported production budget for this one was $180 million, with a massive marketing spend of course tacked onto that. At this rate, the film will become profitable in the coming days.

Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) directs a script by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, based on characters created by Michael Crichton.

Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived.

The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.

Scarlett Johansson stars as skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery.

It’s the 4th of July and the Jurassic World franchise has stomped its way back into theaters, but that’s not the only new movie hoping to keep you company over the long weekend.

Here’s all the new horror that released from June 30 – July 4, 2025!

For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.

The second movie from Talk to Me directing duo Danny and Michael Philippou, Bring Her Back is now available on Premium VOD for rent ($19.99) or purchase ($24.99) via A24.

Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) stars. In the film, “A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.”

Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, Sally-Anne Upton, Stephen Phillips, and Mischa Heywood also star in the film directed by Danny Philippou & Michael Philippou.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review, “It’s impressively bold and shocking in the way the directors continue to push horror boundaries and shatter taboos, especially when it comes to kids, ensuring a nail-biting and grueling experience that’ll leave you wincing and squirming in your seat. But it’s so utterly soul crushing in its unwavering darkness that it’s hard to imagine anything coming close to beating it for the mantle of feel bad horror of the year.”

The Twin

Writer/Director J.C. Doler’s directorial debut, the Irish folklore horror film The Twin was released onto VOD outlets this past Tuesday by Vertical. Check out the trailer below.

The movie stars Logan Donovan (Colony, Magnum P.I.), Robert Longstreet (Midnight Mass, Fall of the House of Usher), and Aleksa Palladino (The Irishman, The Penguin).

The film’s synopsis: “After the tragic loss of his son, Nicholas (Donovan) struggles with his grief and a strained relationship with his wife Charlie (Palladino). Under the watch of psychiatrist Dr. Beaumont (Longstreet), Nicholas begins experiencing terrifying visions of a shadowy figure that looks like himself. As reality unravels, Nicholas must confront his past and the supernatural force haunting him before it consumes him completely.”

J.C. Doler co-wrote the screenplay along with Paul Petersen, based on a story by Doler, Taylor Bracewell, and Chris Alan Evans. The indie horror film, previously titled The Fetch, was the winner of Best Screenplay at the 2021 Screamfest. The Twin had world premiered at the 2024 Austin Film Festival and won the Audience Award for Dark Matters Feature.

You’ve heard the story, but never like this. Enter the shadowed world of public domain horror movie The Death of Snow White on Digital today via The Horror Collective.

The twisted reimagining of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale stars Sanae Loutsis (Rose Blood: A Friday the 13th Fan Film) and Chelsea Edmundson (Army of the Dead).

Pursued by her stepmother for eternal beauty, Snow White flees into a terrifying forest and aligns with seven bloodthirsty dwarfs — cold-blooded assassins with a knack for brutal killings.

Jason Brooks (Friday the 13th Vengeance 2: Bloodlines) directs from a script he co-wrote with special effects makeup artist Naomi Mechem-Miller.

Tristan Nokes, Meredith Binder, Risa Mei, Jeremy Hallam, Ali Chapman, Colin Miller, Dillon Moore, Michael De Santo II, and Eric Pope round out the cast.

Jurassic World Rebirth t-rex

The seventh installment in the multi-billion dollar blockbuster franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth starring Scarlett Johansson is now playing in movie theaters nationwide.

Great White Waters

Cocaine incites a shark feeding frenzy in Great White Waters, a new Tubi original from the director of Sharknado that swam onto the free-streaming platform beginning today, July 4.

The film’s official synopsis reads, “When millions in cartel cocaine go missing off Florida’s coast, the search turns savage as vicious sharks close in on anyone daring to claim the stash.”

Angela Cole, Johnny Ramey, Steve Hanks, Ashton Leigh, and Hector Becerra star. Director Anthony C. Ferrante co-wrote the screenplay with Geoff Mead.

This marks the second team-up between Tubi and Ferrante when it comes to sharks; Ferrante stranded a couple with sharks in the 2022 Tubi original Blind Waters. Ferrante is also behind the first five Sharknado films, so he’s well versed in campy shark horror.

sinners black american sign language

Ryan Coogler’s Sinners has made its streaming debut on HBO Max for the 4th of July, and Max is streaming the Black American Sign Language (BASL) version of Sinners alongside the original version of the film. Max notes in a press release, “This groundbreaking release marks the first time a streaming platform will exclusively debut a film interpreted in BASL.”

“The release of Sinners with BASL is a major step forward in accessibility, representation, and visibility in streaming,” Max explains. “BASL is a distinct dialect of American Sign Language (ASL) with its own dynamic history and unique grammar, signing space, rhythm, facial expressions, and cultural nuances. For the first time, the Black Deaf community will have streaming access to a more immersive experience in their language. Max subscribers, who sign in ASL but are unfamiliar with this dialect, will also be able to follow along with this interpretation.

“Sinners with BASL is interpreted by Nakia Smith, an influential voice in the Black Deaf community, who delivers a powerful interpretation with cultural depth and linguistic richness that aligns with the film’s themes and historical timeline. Rosa Lee Timm, Director of Artistic Sign Language, is a renowned performance artist and uses her expertise in sign language performance and visual storytelling to ensure cultural authenticity.”

“Accessibility within streaming is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Our goal at Max is to make these great stories accessible to all audiences in a way that is authentic to the content and the communities we serve,” said Naomi Waibel, SVP of Global Product Management at Warner Bros. Discovery. “Sinners with Black American Sign Language is an example of how culturally nuanced access can enrich the viewing experience for our audiences.”

“With ASL” titles, including Sinners, will be displayed on the Max app and indicated with key art featuring the sign language symbol. Look for both versions of the film on the 4th of July.

Written and directed by Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed), the critically acclaimed vampire horror film stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twin brothers Smoke and Stack.

Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, they return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.

If you squint hard enough, you can see director Gareth Edwards’ feature debut, Monsters, and its sense of scale and wonder nestled in Jurassic World Rebirth. The plots, more or less, are essentially the same, in which humans are hired to retrieve something precious that requires heading into a quarantined zone due to dangerous, behemoth creatures.

In the case of Rebirth, a greedy pharmaceutical company wants to retrieve dino samples for profit, requiring a dangerous mission into an off-limits area that’s been taken over by the most dangerous species and more. The seventh installment of this franchise is at least an improvement over the last, thanks to pared-back simplicity, but it quickly runs out of ideas.

Part of that is due to the way the previous trilogy backed itself into a corner. Jurassic World Rebirth picks up five years after the events of Dominion, quickly erasing the spread of dinosaurs across the globe with the opening reveal that the prehistoric beasts have been dying out in our modern ecosystem. The exception is the oxygen-rich islands near the equator, where dinosaurs are thriving, along with some abandoned genetic experiments.

That’s where the humans come in, with hired merc Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) leading a ragtag crew easily identified as survivors or dino food based on where the needle points on their moral compass. Nervous dino expert Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) and Zora’s trusted right-hand Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) mark themselves with heroic potential early on, while sleazy Big Pharma rep Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend) all but begs for a brutal demise.

Jurassic World Rebirth t-rex
L to R: Luna Blaise and the T-Rex in JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH, directed by Gareth Edwards

The unlucky but wholesome family who sails too close to the quarantine zone only to run afoul of a Mosasaurus and need rescuing from Zora’s crew? Also predictable in fates, of course, though original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp at least wields them to create a separate survival adventure from the scavenger hunt Zora and crew are tasked to accomplish. Both splintered factions encounter a variety of dangerous reptilian enemies and close escapes, but Rebirth designates its nastiest off-screen PG-13 kills for the morally dubious or red shirts.

Edwards is more than capable of delivering stunning set pieces, which is good news considering that Rebirth is essentially just a series of impressive action sequences that showcase the dinosaurs and the great digital effects bringing them to life. Koepp’s script wisely bypasses the heavy-handed callbacks that plagued the previous installments, therefore giving us a reprieve from the velociraptors in favor of focusing on variety instead. Rebirth attempts to make a big deal about its genetic experiments, like the Distortus Rex, but gets too skittish to explore them beyond standard dino attacks. Worse, the glaring product placement gets more attention; it’s all too easy to get distracted here by the prominent showcase of Mars Inc. candy and Dr. Pepper over dinosaurs when there’s no real sense of danger for those not marked as fodder.

Jurassic World Rebirth
The Mosasaurus and Spinosauruses in JURASSIC WORLD REBIRTH, directed by Gareth Edwards.

The overt commercialization continues with the dinosaurs themselves, including a new cute little mascot named Dolores, an adorable juvenile Aquilops to be sure, but one so implausibly forced into the proceedings in a way that’s purely designed to sell toys. Rebirth doesn’t really want you to dwell on that, though, but rather just sit back and enjoy the easy, breezy ride. That’s essentially what this sequel is: a safe but fun enough theme park ride.

Rebirth acknowledges that humanity has largely grown bored of dinosaurs and attempts to reset with a pared-back plot meant to remind us why dinosaurs are terrifying. The glaring flaw with that approach is its reluctance to get too scary or intense for the younger viewers who make up the target demo for Jurassic World merch. There’s a great movie buried somewhere beneath the slick, commercialized polish. Enough of it cuts through the artifice to deliver summer escapism fun, but not enough to come close to capturing the awe and intensity of the original that began it all.

Jurassic World Rebirth takes a step in the right direction, but the previous trilogy backed this franchise so thoroughly into a corner that it may be time to let this series go extinct.

Jurassic World Rebirth releases in theaters on July 2, 2025.

A new featurette has been released for Jurassic World Rebirth this afternoon, this one focused entirely on the dinosaurs. Specifically, the approach to making them terrifying again.

Visual effects supervisor/second unit director David Vickery previews in the featurette, “We’re looking for any way that we can to have the hairs on the back of your neck rise.”

Star Scarlett Johansson adds, “That’s what brings the excitement… you are just in a constant state of peril.” Watch the latest Jurassic World Rebirth featurette down below.

The seventh installment in the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise opens in theaters on July 2, 2025, and it’s taking us to the research facility for the original Jurassic Park.

The worst of the worst dinosaurs were left on an island — from Tyrannosaurus and Mosasaurus to the mutant Distortus Rex — and they’re all attacking in the second trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth.

Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) directs from a script by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, based on characters created by Michael Crichton.

Mahershala Ali co-stars as Duncan Kincaid, Zora’s most trusted team leader. Jonathan Bailey plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis. Rupert Friend appears as Big Pharma representative Martin Krebs. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo plays Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked civilian family.

The cast also includes Luna Blaise, David Iacono, and Audrina Miranda as Reuben’s family and Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein as members of Zora and Krebs’ crews.

The seventh installment in the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise opens in theaters on July 2, 2025, and it’s taking us to the research facility for the original Jurassic Park.

Getting to the island will involve surviving a harrowing Mosasaurus attack at sea, and once there we’ll come face to face with the franchise’s newest monster: the D-Rex.

We’re now less than two months away from the return of the Jurassic World franchise, with this summer’s Jurassic World Rebirth aiming to take the franchise in a new direction. The new movie is taking a page out of the playbooks of both Jaws and the original Jurassic Park rather than more recent Jurassic World movies, with all new characters taking center stage.

Entertainment Weekly introduces this new cast of characters, led by Scarlett Johansson’s Zora Bennett, in an exclusive preview piece featuring four brand new images from the movie.

Johansson’s Zora is joined by Mahershala Ali’s Duncan and Jonathan Bailey’s Dr. Loomis, with the trio being compared to iconic trio Brody, Quint and Hooper from Jaws.

Entertainment Weekly previews, “The version of Jurassic World Rebirth that exists now — even as [director] Gareth Edwards still has a ways to go to finalize the edit — is closer in spirit to Jaws. Johansson’s Zora is the Brody (Roy Scheider’s character), hunting for a prehistoric creature with Henry as the Hooper figure and Duncan filling the Quint void.”

The other main characters featured in the film are the Delgados, a vacationing family that Zora and her team have to rescue from a dinosaur attack while they’re out on their own mission to secure potentially life-saving dinosaur DNA. Head over to EW to learn more.

From director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) and writer David Koepp (Jurassic Park), Jurassic World Rebirth will stomp into theaters on July 2, 2025.

The Jurassic World franchise has been messing with dino DNA to create some brand new hybrid nightmares in recent years, with Jurassic World unleashing the Indominus Rex and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom introducing the Indoraptor. This summer’s Jurassic World Rebirth will also feature a brand new dino terror the world has never seen before.

The official name of Rebirth‘s new dinosaur? Distortus Rex aka D-Rex.

Director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) tells Empire this week, “It’s kind of like if the T-Rex was designed by H.R. Giger, and then that whole thing had sex with a Rancor. It’s a design that I was really happy with. I’d like to buy the toy of it when it comes out.”

We’ve only gotten brief glimpses of the six-limbed D-Rex in the film’s teasers and trailers thus far, and we may have to wait until July 2, 2025 for the full reveal on the big screen.

Gareth Edwards directs the franchise’s seventh installment from a script by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, based on characters created by Michael Crichton.

The idea behind Jurassic World Rebirth is to tap back into the vibes of the original Jurassic Park, whisking us off to an island inhabited by dinosaurs far too dangerous for the parks.

In the new movie, “The planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.”

Standing in the way of the film’s human characters? You guessed it. The D-Rex.

“In death there are no accidents, no coincidences, no mishaps, and no escapes,” Tony Todd‘s Bludworth says in 2000’s Final Destination. Death is back with a brand new installment in New Line Cinema’s bloody successful franchise that takes audiences back to the very beginning of Death’s twisted sense of justice. Plagued by a violent recurring nightmare, college student Stefanie heads home to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle and save her family from the grisly demise that awaits them all. Zach Lipovsky & Adam Stein (Freaks) direct from a script by Guy Busick (Scream 5, Scream 6) and Lori Evans Taylor (Cellar Door). Watch the trailer here.

Read our review.

Fear Street: Prom Queen – May 23 (Netflix)

Fear Street Prom Queen

Matt Palmer (Calibre) is directing the franchise’s brand new fourth installment set in 1988, placing the film between Fear Street: 1994 and Fear Street: 1978. While that’s the chronological placement, we understand this is a standalone tale. The class of 1988 is in for one hell of a prom night when prom court nominees start mysteriously disappearing. While we wait for a new trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth, the official MPA rating for the franchise’s upcoming return to the big screen has arrived this morning.

Jurassic World Rebirth has been rated “PG-13” for “intense sequences of violence/action, bloody images, some suggestive references, language and a drug reference.”

From executive producer Steven Spielberg, the seventh installment in the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise opens in theaters on July 2, 2025 from Universal.

The idea behind Jurassic World Rebirth is to scale the franchise back to the vibes of the original Jurassic Park, telling a fresh story filled with characters that are brand new to the saga.

Ahead of tomorrow’s trailer drop, Vanity Fair got a first look at six images from Jurassic World Rebirth.

The accompanying article reveals that the seventh installment in the Jurassic Park franchise will lean into the horror elements.

“It’s got to be dangerous,” asserts producer Frank Marshall. “You’re in a new place, you don’t know what’s around the corner. You’ve got a different jungle, you’ve got more water, you’ve got higher cliffs. There’s a little bit of everything that’s scary.”

“When you make a creature, you get a big, massive pot and you pour in your favorite monsters from other films and books,” says director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla). Describing a particular dinosaur that turns up in the trailer, he teases, “Some Rancor went in there, some H.R. Giger went in there, a little T. rex went in there.”

The filmmaker drew inspiration from the works of Steven Spielberg, who serves as executive producer. “To me, it’s like a heist movie that meets all the films of Steven Spielberg I loved growing up,” Edward said. “The three films we were orbiting were Jaws, Indiana Jones, and the awe and wonder of the original Jurassic.”

Edwards continues, “Jurassic Park is a horror film in the witness protection program. Most people don’t think of it like that. We all went to see it as kids. But I was scared shitless, to be honest, when I was at the cinema watching the T. rex attack. It’s one of the most well-directed scenes in cinema history, so the bar’s really high to come on board and try and do this.”

Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Godzilla) directs from a script by original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp, based on characters created by Michael Crichton.

When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.

Mahershala Ali co-stars as Duncan Kincaid, Zora’s most trusted team leader. Jonathan Bailey plays paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis. Rupert Friend appears as Big Pharma representative Martin Krebs. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo plays Reuben Delgado, the father of the shipwrecked civilian family.

Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, Philippine Velge, Bechir Sylvain, and Ed Skrein round out the cast.

Leigh Whannell’s take on a Universal Monsters classic arrives hot on the heels of the Wolf Moon, the first full moon of the new year. Whannell’s Wolf Man leans heavily into the body horror of a man transforming into a monster, drawing more from 1980s films like The Fly.

Grafted 2024 Wei Starts To Cut Her Face

If there’s one emerging 2025 horror trend already, it might be body horror. Experimentations on a revolutionary skin grafting procedure get weird and gross in Sasha Rainbow’s feature debut. Look for this one to arrive on Shudder this month.

The Shrouds – Spring 2025

The Shrouds movie

Cinema’s most iconic dinosaurs return to the big screen in Jurassic World Rebirth next summer, and director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, The Creator) is in charge this time around. The plan? To trim back the visual effects-heavy spectacle a bit and get back to the vibes of the original Jurassic Park, which Edward details in a new chat with Entertainment Weekly.

Additionally, the outlet has shared four brand new images from the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth, introducing us to the trio of main characters who bring a Jaws vibe to the film.

Edwards explains to EW, “To me, it’s a giant love letter to Steven Spielberg and his earlier films. There are moments in this movie that remind me very much of Jaws. It’s like little greatest hits of all those aspects of his films that I loved growing up as a child. It’s essentially a little adventure odyssey across this island, a survival story, really.”

The site goes on to describe in their own words, “Edwards likens the trio’s dynamic to Brody, Hooper, and Quint from Jaws, played in that 1975 Spielberg classic by Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, and Robert Shaw — disparate individuals hunting a prehistoric creature.”

Head over to Entertainment Weekly to learn more about Jurassic World Rebirth.

Universal will release Rebirth in theaters on July 2, 2025.

Here’s the official plot synopsis: “The planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.”

Academy Award® nominee Scarlett Johansson stars.

Original Jurassic Park writer David Koepp is back to write the screenplay.

Universal is bringing the Jurassic Park / Jurassic World Universe back to the big screen with Jurassic World Rebirth next year, a brand new movie that takes place five years after the events of Jurassic World: Dominion. The goal? To strip the franchise back to its core elements, seemingly with a smaller scale adventure that returns the saga to its 1990s roots.

For that purpose, original Jurassic Park writer David Koepp is back to write the screenplay, and Koepp teases the vision for Jurassic World Rebirth in a chat with The Discourse Podcast.

Koepp details, “I hope people like the movie because the series tended to change after three, and it felt like, ‘Okay, so let’s change our tone.’ Steven [Spielberg] and I were interested in a tone that was maybe more akin to the very first movie. I saw it early on as a mission movie. I like things that are driven by bottles, by containment, you know?”

“And so, developing a limited team and a thing that they have to accomplish – that was all really fun,” Koepp continued. “And it was just fun to return to that world of great adventure backed by real science and write some cool new characters. You don’t often get a chance to have a blank slate and say, ‘What do you want to do?’”

He adds, “There were no franchise expectations other than dinosaurs.”

Koepp notes in the same chat with The Playlist’s podcast that Jurassic World Rebirth won’t be contradicting or denying anything from the previous six films. Good news if you hate retcons!

Universal will release Rebirth in theaters on July 2, 2025. This time around, franchise newcomer Gareth Edwards (2014’s Godzilla, The Creator) is seated in the director’s chair.

Here’s the full official plot synopsis: “The planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. The next installment in the Jurassic World franchise has received an official title today, with Universal announcing that Jurassic World Rebirth will release in theaters July 2, 2025.

Check out two first look images and the title announcement video below.

Universal previews, “This action-packed new chapter sees an intrepid team racing to secure DNA samples from the three most colossal creatures across land, sea and air.”

Here’s the full official plot synopsis announced today: “Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind.”
