Before making films like The Convent, The Gravedancers, Big Ass Spider, Lavalantula and Don’t Kill It, our buddy Mike Mendez made his feature debut with a film titled Killers back in 1997, which is now headed to Unrated Director’s Cut Blu-ray from Synapse Films.

Synapse previews, “In 1997, director Mike Mendez and co-writer/star Dave Larsen collaborated on the brutal, uncompromising and wickedly funny Killers, a movie that divided audiences at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival but then had a hard time finding an audience due to scattershot distribution. Having gained a cult following in the years since, Synapse Films is bringing Killers to Blu-ray in its complete, unrated director’s cut on October 8, 2024!

“Once upon a time, the James Brothers, Odessa (Dave Larsen) and Kyle (David Gunn), murdered their parents in their own beds. Now they’ve escaped from Death Row and are on the run on a stormy night, looking for a place to hide out. They invade the home of the Ryans, who seem like a typical American family and should be easy to control. But there’s something not quite right about this brood—the women seem more attracted than frightened by these notorious murderers in their house, and Dad (C.T. Miller) has secrets of his own.

“Things get violently out of hand as the James boys find the night not going as they expected…and there are even more surprises waiting in the basement!”

Special Features include:

  • Original unrated director’s cut scanned and restored by Multicom Entertainment Group
  • Audio commentary with director Mike Mendez and author/horror journalist Michael Gingold
  • Original promotional trailers
  • Alternate Ending
  • Liner notes by critic/writer Heather Drain

Killers is a highly stylized crime/horror hybrid that also puts a darkly satiric spin on America’s obsession with violent perpetrators. You can pre-order the Blu-ray from Synapse today.

Before making films like The Convent, The Gravedancers, Big Ass Spider, Lavalantula and Don’t Kill It, our buddy Mike Mendez made his feature debut with a film titled Killers back in 1996, which had only ever been released on VHS. Much to the surprise even of Mendez himself, his first film has been restored and it’s now streaming through Amazon Prime!

Mendez wrote over on Facebook today:

“This is very special news to me, because at one time I thought the film might be lost forever. The last time it was released was on VHS in 1997, so this was a wonderful surprise to see that it has been rescanned from the original negative and now streaming. Thank you to the folks at Multicom for restoring the film. I hope a Blu-ray release is just around the corner!”

According to Dawn of the Discs, a Blu-ray release is indeed in the works.

In Killers, brothers Kyle and Odessa James have been found guilty of the murders of their parents and are sentenced to death. Shortly before their execution, the two shockingly escape from prison in the middle of the night. Dave Larsen, David Gunn and Damian Hoffer star.

Slasher films are perhaps the most well known subgenre of horror in mainstream society. After all, they’re the ones that are plastered all over billboards, slapped on our TVs, seen in cultural references, etc… Almost everyone knows who Freddy Krueger or Jason Voorhees is but I doubt many people can tell you where Samara Morgan is from or what film featured Nix*.

Now, I’m not bashing that at all. I think it’s awesome that any part of horror becomes ingrained in the public eye, which is why I think it’s also just as important to learn a bit more about those characters so that they can be discussed with reverence and knowledge.

With that being said, below is a quiz that challenges you on your knowledge of several iconic slashers. I’m not going to lie and tell you I did well because I absolutely didn’t. In fact, I did pretty terrible. Time to hit the horror textbooks and get to learning!

Take the quiz and let us know your results in the comments below!

*The Ring and Lord of Illusions, respectively.

Admit it. One late night, while you were drearily scrolling through articles online, you came across an ad for a dirty video, and you clicked on it. Guilt might have washed over you, but the adrenaline from breaking some kind of moral code kept your eyes glued to the screen, taking comfort in the fact that no one would ever witness your sins. It may feel slightly wrong, but this behavior is not that uncommon. In a society where revealing celebrity photos are often leaked online, and nearly every craving can be coaxed within seconds without even having to leave your home, who hasn’t peeked at something naughty online that they shouldn’t have? Inquisitiveness is part of what makes us human, but if we allow our Id too much control over our actions, and give into our every whim and desire, our humanity is what we wind up sacrificing. In its attempt to explore the depths of our morbid curiosity and society’s instant gratification via the internet, Killers becomes the Videodrome of its generation.

Have you ever thought about killing someone? Nomura suggests that it’s something everyone ought to consider. He’s been taking lives and hiding the evidence ever since he was nine years old, starting with his very own family. First he finds the girls, then he films himself torturing and killing them (in a terrifyingly awesome mask), and then cleans up the mess and posts the video online under an anonymous account. Nomura is just a lone wolf terrorizing Japan, but his debauchery managed the catch the eyes of millions of people, including Indonesian journalist Bayu all the way over in Jakarta. Bayu thinks of himself as a good man, just trying to hold white collar criminals to the same standards as the rest of their peers, and punish men like Dharma for their crimes. But when Bayu is randomly attacked by two barbarous thieves and is forced to defend himself, he feels the immense power of playing god, and and falls prey to a lethal spell. As he glides his camera phone over the robbers’ lifeless bodies, Bayu feels calamity wash over him like a mother’s lullaby, and he finds joy in the act he once feared. As soon as Bayu posts the video online, Nomura reaches out to him, and encourages his murderous rampage. One man in Japan, and one in Indonesia, the two men set out on their deadly paths, one born into an emotionless sociopathic world, and the other sinking a little further down a self-destructive rabbit hole each day.

Told entirely from the villains’ POV, this film provides an excellent analysis of the makings of a serial killer though the old debate of nature vs. nurture. Nomura represents nature, since he’s been murdering people from the age of nine, and in all likelihood, long before that. He feels no remorse, and displays no emotions, only exhibiting calm power over his victims and taking delight in their brutal deaths. A true sociopath, Nomura works hard to fit in and appear normal amongst his peers, making a strong case for the argument that murderers are simply born with an innate need to kill. Bayu on the other hand starts out like most people, a simple man who’s made some mistakes and is currently paying for them. As much as he loves his daughter and her mother, the responsibility of a family frightened him, so he walked away, and has been trying to make things right ever since. However, after his name as a writer is tarnished by Dharma, the man he seeks to imprison, the weight of his family and his failure in his work weigh heavy on him, and the men who rob him are just a tipping point into his journey of madness. Therefore, one could argue that murderers are made when good men are forced to make bad decisions in traumatic events. Both sides of the argument are equally supported, and as disturbing as the film is, the ride is surprisingly quite engaging.

Like Cronenberg’s Videodrome, Killers points out how our society is never satisfied with our means of entertainment. Whereas Videodrome was a commentary on video nasties of the 1980s, Killers is an updated version, capturing the underbelly of the internet through handheld cameras, cellphones, and laptops. Nowadays, a simple story about a boy and a girl falling in love isn’t gonna cut it. We want gun fights, we want nudity, and we want it now. We won’t be happy until we’ve drawn blood. As we hungrily seek the next thrill, the only logical next step to titilate our senses is to raise the stakes and hurt somebody. In Killers, we, as the audience, sit safe behind a screen and watch the violence unfold, becoming just another pair of eyes in addition to the many that watch Nomura commit his wicked deeds, just as Bayu did before he joined in on the action. Killers is not just a brilliant look at the overstimulation and desensitization of humanity, it actually manages to wrangle in their viewers as participants in this sick and twisted game. The sadistic acts are as tranquil and artistic as they are barbaric, making it hard to look away. Through this, the viewers understand first hand the slippery slope that is the journey from passive watching to active involvement.

With layered, oddly relatable antiheroes and utterly astounding performances from Kazuki Kitamura and Oka Antara, Killers is an extremely impressive addition to the Mo Brothers’ catalogue. The best parts of the film are the interactions between Bayu and Nomura, and it would have been nice to see more of Nomura taking Bayu under his wing and training him as his understudy. With a little tweaking and fine tuning to make a tighter story, this film would be nearly perfect. However, despite its small faults here and there, Killers is wildly entertaining and a fascinating inquiry into the mind of people who take pleasure in extinguishing life. The Mo Brothers are oozing with potential, and with a little recognition and a bigger budget, one day, they will undoubtedly make a masterpiece.

Finally getting released in the States on January 23, 2015 through Wells Go USA is Killers, a stylish thriller from The Raid‘s Gareth Evans and directed by the hugely talented ‘Mo Brothers’ (V/H/S/2, Macabre).

The film sees the explosive meeting of two serial killers with contrasting, and sadistic, styles of murder.

Check out the new U.S. trailer below.

“Nomura is a good looking and stylish man in his early thirties who lives a successful life in Tokyo, Japan. Girls are drawn to him, something he uses to his advantage as none of them realise the sinister truth behind the clean-cut façade.

Nomura has been leaving a legacy of violent murders that he immortalises through video clips posted on a public video website. He thrives off of the fact that millions are witnessing his work through the virally spread videos.

Thousands of miles away from him, in a whole different world, lives Bayu, a disgraced investigative journalist living in a violent and unstable Jakarta, Indonesia. As Bayu’s life is hit by the nadir of failures, Nomura’s videos trigger his dark side as he starts to record his own brand of “justified” killings. Nomura’s seemingly confident and controlled charm starts to peel when his ego is wounded by the fact that Bayu’s videos have reached a significant numbers of followers that could rival his own.

Complicating matters further is Nomura’s bizarre attraction towards a traumatised young florist Hisae. Bayu himself starts to sink deeper into a spiral of violence; obsessed with bringing down one of the country’s biggest and most corrupt politicians, but during his bloody rampage he doesn’t realise the repercussions towards his young daughter, Elly.

When the rivalry between Nomura and Bayu becomes an uncontrollable psychosis, the two of them must face each other in one of the most exhilarating film finales in years.“

In the film, “Two serial killers post their violent crimes online in a psychotic battle for notoriety. It soon becomes clear that they will square off with one another face to face.”

Check out the first stills from the thriller that stars Kazuki Kitamura, Oka Antara, Rin Takanashi, Luna Maya, Ray Sahetapy.

Here’s the full line-up for Park City at Midnight.

While we’re crazy close to announcing the Bloody Disgusting Selects release of Macabre (finally), the insanely gory Indonesian flick from The Mo Brothers, Timo Tjahjanto has reteamed with Kimo Stamboel for Killers, which is being produced, in part, by the team behind The Raid. The pic features Japanese actor Kazuki Kitamura as the murderous Nomura Shuhei.

Timo has been teasing tons of images over the course of this past summer, but now he’s released a rampage of goodies ranging from an awesome teaser trailer, to a new one-sheet, and even a lengthy behind-the-scenes video featurette!

The film stars Ray Sahetapy, the veteran Indonesian actor who played the crime boss Tama in The Raid.

Developed by The Mo Brothers from a story by Nightmare Detective producer Ushiyama Takuji, “Killer is a dark psychological look into the minds of two men with nothing in common: Nomura, a self-obsessed serial killer residing in Tokyo and Bayu, a failing journalist and a struggling father in Jakarta. Connected through violent incidents, both men inexplicably start to feed off each other. As their lives become more uncontrollable, each of them starts to journey into a maze of violent self discovery.”

Timo is also behind the insane V/H/S/2 segment, “Safe Haven,” and my personal favorite ABCs of Death short, ‘L is for Libido’.

The trailer comes courtesy of Twitch.

V/H/S/2 just hit VOD!! You can find the iTunes and Apple TV link here. Other outlets carrying it should also include Amazon, AT&T UVerse, Charter, Comcast, Cox, Google Play, Playstation 3, Sudden Link, Time Warner Cable, Verizon Fios, VUDU and Xbox Zune. Look around! There’s also a theatrical rollout set for July 12th. We’ve also got an insane look at a new poster courtesy of MTV.

In the film directed by Simon Barrett, Adam Wingard, Gareth Evans, Eduardo Sanchez, Gregg Hale, Jason Eisener and Timo Tjahjanto, “Inside a darkened house looms a column of TVs littered with VHS tapes, a pagan shrine to forgotten analog gods. The screens crackle and pop endlessly with monochrome vistas of static—white noise permeating the brain and fogging concentration. But you must fight the urge to relax: this is no mere movie night. Those obsolete spools contain more than just magnetic tape. They are imprinted with the very soul of evil.”

Last night I hopped on the phone with directors Gareth Evans (The Raid) and Timo Tjahjanto (Killers) to talk about their segment, “Safe Haven.” While I was at it, I got a little bit of info on The Raid 2. Check it out below and be sure to write your V/H/S/2 review here!!

How did you guys get looped into this?

Gareth: We both got contacted separately. I’m not the horror guy really, I’m more the action guy, but we’ve known each other for 6 or 7 years. And we said, “f*ck it.” We’ve wanted to collaborate so we just let this be that thing.

The segment has such a sense of dread and escalation, but it also has a sense of humor. Was that hard to balance?

Timo: I guess if you take the original inspiration, like the Jonestown Massacre and all that, that whole thing is such a serious subject to tackle. We just wanted to see what would happen if a camera crew went into one of those places on the day of the f*cking apocalypse. In that respect, once we knew we were going to do that – and once we decided it would be supernatural – that informed us in terms of tone. It’s so dark and f*cked up, but it’s laced with black humor and a sense of “what the f*ck is going on?” Hopefully the audience can barely catch their breath.

It’s so ambitious, how much time did you have to shoot it?

Gareth: Seven days, but the schedule we had we would sometimes shoot 18 or 19 hour days. At some point we went for 24 hours and then we had to go for an extra day, so 8 days. The benefits of shooting in Indonesia, we are very independent from union laws.

Timo: It’s very much normal to shoot for those kinds of hours. Gareth and I both have our feature films where we actually went for crazy hours. It’s pretty much nothing new.

Gareth: Also the way we work together as co-directors, we could split up duties and know we could trust the other person. Usually, on our features, neither one of us has a second unit because we want to be able to see everything. But on this one he would cover me for one scene and I’d cover him for another.

The cult leader is amazing. He was in ABC’s Of Death too, right?

Gareth: Oh it’s nice that you noticed that. Yeah Epy Kusnandar, who plays The Father, Timo had done ABC’s with him first and had just f*cking raved about him. I was like, “okay let’s find something for him.” I don’t think he even auditioned, we just cast him off the bat.

Timo: He was already in character when he came for our first call. Also, after “Safe Haven” we cast him in our feature films.

Gareth: Yeah he’s in Killers and will be in The Raid 2 as well. We love Epy to bits so we’re going to keep casting him as more and more f*cked up characters.

Gareth, it seems like the shoot for The Raid 2 is epic. What day are you on and how many do you have left?

Gareth: Right now we’re on day 84 I think. It was supposed to be 100 but we’ve gone over a little. We’re a few days over at the moment. In about a month or so we’ll be done and then post will probably take me until the end of the year. It’s been intense. In a way the number of shooting days is a response to The Raid, which was 71 or 72 days but almost every day was 16 or 17 hours of shooting. We were just drained and sick. So on this one I wanted 5 days a week and 15 hours a day maximum. That helps space it out a little bit.

Timo, how’s post on Killers coming along?

Timo: It’s done, I just came from color correction. We’re going to start getting it into festivals before we go after a premiere here. That film is interesting because it started out as a slasher movie, but it slowly developed into a psychological drama. When I watched the final cut it still ended up having some horror elements, so it will be something fresh, hopefully.

Former Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr passed away last night peacefully in his sleep at the age of 56. Burr joined Maiden in 1979 and performed on the first three albums Iron Maiden (1980), Killers (1981) and The Number Of The Beast (1982). Burr was later diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which caused him to need a wheelchair and left him in great debt. Iron Maiden staged several charity concerts for Burr.

Steve Harris said “This is terribly sad news. Clive was a very old friend of all of us. He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to Maiden in the early days when we were starting out. This is a sad day for everyone in the band and those around him and our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Mimi and family at this time.”

Bruce Dickinson adds “I first met Clive when he was leaving Samson and joining Iron Maiden. He was a great guy and a man who really lived his life to the full. Even during the darkest days of his M.S., Clive never lost his sense of humour or irreverence. This is a terribly sad day and all our thoughts are with Mimi and the family”

Our deepest condolences to Burr’s family, his friends, the members of Iron Maidens, and all the fans around the world.

It’s driving me crazy that we havent released Macabre (pictured above) yet, the insanely gory Indonesian flick from The Mo Brothers. While we figure that out, we worked with Timo Tjahjanto on one of the five V/H/S/2 segments. With that in the can, Timo has reteamed with Kimo Stamboel for Killers, which is being produced, in part, by the team behind The Raid, reports Twitch.

The film stars Ray Sahetapy, the veteran Indonesian actor who played the crime boss Tama in The Raid.

Developed by The Mo Brothers from a story by Nightmare Detective producer Ushiyama Takuji, “Killers is an international horror-thriller revolving around a pair of serial killers who discover one another on the internet.”

Timo is also behind my personal favorite ABCs of Death short, ‘L is for Libido’.
