Every year, the game developers and many of the folks who play them all gather in Los Angeles to talk about video games at the annual E3 convention. The “official” event runs from June 14-16, but that doesn’t include what often ends up being the most exciting part — sans those dull powerpoint presentations we must often endure — the pre-E3 briefings. EA and Bethesda are getting the party started this year, with conference slated for the afternoon of June 12, so in reality, E3 runs from June 12-16.

My E3 wish lists almost always go unanswered, but not this time. This time, at least some of the games I’d like to see will actually be shown. And if they’re not? Well, there’s always next year.

The recent goings on with Resident Evil 7 seems like a good place to start. The game could be revealed at the convention, and more importantly, it might finally be the “clean slate” the series so desperately needs. Capcom has big plans for the second half of the year, and I think they may have everything to do with this game.

Unfortunately, this would mean the Resident Evil 2 remake would be a no-show, since it’s presence would take considerable attention off Capcom’s next big thing. I don’t think they want that, so for now, there can be only one (at E3).

Remember State of Decay? The sequel they teased us with several years ago has to be ready for a public showing. The idea was the sequel would build on the foundation of the original game, transforming it into a zombie-themed MMO, of sorts. That was a long time ago, so the plan has probably changed a bit since then. Whatever form it takes, developer Undead Labs needs to shamble back into my life, pronto.

E3_WL2

Continuing the zombie theme is Dead Island 2, which we’ve seen nary a screenshot or second of footage from since Yager was removed from its development. I’m eager to see what’s changed, if anything, about the game. Maybe we’ll all find out next month.

This isn’t a new release, but I am interested in hearing what Techland’s plans are for the future of Dying Light, now that we know they’re going to continue supporting it with new content through the remainder of 2016. Is the content substantial, or are we talking smaller stuff, or worse, more character skins. I can’t see my character, Techland! You’re effectively buying DLC that only your co-op partners will enjoy. I don’t get it.

And where the fuck is Left 4 Dead 3?

Moving away from zombies, we do have a few indies I’d like to see something substantial from next month, starting with Routine. Lunar Software has confirmed, multiple times now, that it’s definitely, for sure, 100% coming this year. Sounds like the same old… routine, if you ask me.

I would love to get the deets on Contagion developer Monochrome’s next project, codenamed Project Ageless. Same goes for Moonville’s mystery game. Both are little more than enigmas to us right now, and it’d be nifty if that were no longer true a month from now.

Moonville_1

On the slasher front, there’s one stab ’em up we haven’t had the chance to get to know. We’re practically BFFs with Dead by Daylight and Friday the 13th: The Game, and it’d be nice to be able to say the same about Last Year. All three games deserve their time in the spotlight, and Last Year is long overdue for some affection.

Frictional’s making two games, y’all! Maybe we’ll see one of them in June?

Is anyone else as intrigued as I am by the Paranormal Activity VR game? I haven’t seen any of it in action, but it’s noteworthy when every other licensed IP is either going experimental (The Twilight Zone) or the safer mobile route, like the game adaptations of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Penny Dreadful. That’s not say those games won’t be good, I’d just rather see them to aim as high as developer VRWERX is with this VR game.

And finally, we have Silent Hill. I won’t bother with a recap, we all know what happened. It’s simple: Konami either needs to shit or get off the proverbial pot, and since they’ve already shit just about everywhere, it’s time they hand the series over to a competent studio so we can all move the fuck on.

What would you like to see at E3 next month?

Zombies. Everybody loved them until games developers started dropping their rotten asses onto all the video games in an attempt to cash in on their enormous popularity. As their numbers swelled, so did their haters. The slow, wobbly march of the undead hordes has slowed down somewhat since then, leaving us with an acceptable number of new games to look forward to over the next two years.

I’ve been working to break down the fairly intimidating slate of upcoming horror games that are the most deserving of your anticipation into themed listicles, so this is more of that. Alright, let’s go!

OUR MOST ANTICIPATED HORROR GAMES:
Crowdfunded | Science Fiction | Lovecraftian | Virtual Reality

MAZ_4

Season 3 of Telltale’s acclaimed episode series based on The Walking Dead promises to be more of the same — but in a good way — when it arrives later this year. After the mostly solid appetizer course that was Michonne mini-series, we’re more than ready to reunite with Clem and Co. for another round of post-apocalyptic people watching.

Why We’re Excited: The first and second seasons were frighteningly consistent in their ability to make us laugh, cry, or quickly switch to something less emotionally draining, so we’re confident Telltale will deliver another dose of drama with the third season.

Release Date: Fall 2016 (PC, PS3, PS4, 360, XBO, Mobile)

MAZ_V2_DeadRising4

E3 2016 was really good to fans of the zombie genre. Like, it revealed enough new titles starring walking corpses that I had to update my list to include games like Dead Rising 4 and a handful of others we’ll be going over below. And this time, we’re returning to where it all began — a Christmasy Willamette, Colorado — because Frank West demanded it. Yeah, he’s back, too.

Why We’re Excited: Because Dead Rising is one of a select few zombie-themed video game franchises that’s not afraid to get silly, for better or for worse.

Release Date: A December 6, 2016 release was leaked, but it’s unconfirmed. (PC, XBO)

MAZ_V2_DaysGone

The PlayStation 4-exclusive open-world horror game Days Gone is another gift from E3 2016, where it had an enormously impressive showing that included a live demonstration in which a lone biker takes on a swarm of infected like a badass, right up until the point where he gets overwhelmed by the seemingly endless horde.

Why We’re Excited: Because it’s a blockbuster action horror game that blends The Last of Us, “Sons of Anarchy”, and the World War Z movie

Release Date: Fall 2016 (PS4)

MAZ_8

As far as sequels go, Killing Floor 2 is one of the few that goes above and beyond in its sequel duties in just about every area. It’s a stellar shooter that looks fantastic and takes its gore seriously. It also sports some satisfyingly visceral gunplay, a solid character customization system and access to an endless stream of user-created content, courtesy of Steam Workshop. This game is an easy one to recommend despite being unfinished, and that’s something I’m not quite ready to say about the other Early Access zombie games, including Moving Hazard, DayZ and H1Z1.

Why We’re Excited: I’ve actually played this one, so my excitement for it is based on 33+ hours of experience, rather than, say, the hundreds of hours I’ve spent dreamily wondering what a Resident Evil 2 remake might look like.

Release Date: It’s out now on Steam Early Access, but a console release is expected this year.

MAZ_V2_RE7

That’s right. Capcom finally announced Resident Evil 7 at E3 2016, and it’s heavily inspired by Kojima’s brilliant P.T. demo for his cancelled Silent Hills game, so it looks nothing like any other game in the series. You can learn more about it over here.

Why We’re Excited: It won’t have a single QTE — not even one. Hallelujah.

Release Date: January 24, 2017 (PC, PS4, XBO)

MAZ_9

I think I’ve adequately covered Overkill’s The Walking Dead game, as well as my anticipation for it, in these lists. We have yet to actually see the game in action, and that’s not likely to change until we’re a little closer to its late 2017 release date. We know it’s a standalone story set in the Walking Dead universe, and that it’ll feature a cooperative multiplayer mode similar to Payday 2. We also shouldn’t confuse it for Overkill’s The Walking Dead VR, which is it’s own thing.

Why We’re Excited: Series creator Robert Kirkman seems super pumped about the game, which he once referred to as the “Walking Dead co-op action game fans have been waiting for.” Surely he wouldn’t lead us astray?

Release Date: Fall 2017 (PC, PS4, XBO)

MAZ_V2_StateofDecay2

Jeff Strain, co-founder of State of Decay 2 developer Undead Labs, says the highly anticipated sequel will be “a bigger, badder, bolder, smoother State of Decay that you could play with your friends.” The incredible success of the original game has made the series a high priority for its publisher Microsoft, so I imagine it’ll deliver on all fronts. Fingers crossed.

Why We’re Excited: Undead Labs hit it out of the park with the first State of Decay, and its sequel looks like a worthy follow-up.

Release Date: TBA 2017 (PC, XBO)

MAZ_6

This footage may no longer represent the actual game.

When I stare longingly into the Dead Island 2 screenshots I keep in a very special place on my MacBook — i.e. next to the por- actually, forget it, no one downloads porn in 2016 — I see a game that wants to bring us the best of California (the lovely weather, ocean views), sans the less-appealing bits, like kale chips or the state’s propensity for seemingly sentient wildfires. Now that I think about it, knowing the longer I stay within state lines increases my chances of getting caught inside a blazing inferno might actually benefit this game.

Why We’re Excited: This kind of depends on what’s been changed since Deep Silver replaced its original developer, Yager, with Crackdown 3 maker Sumo Digital — but you can bet it’ll have satisfying combat, addictive co-op and a shitload of zombies.

Release Date: TBA 2017 (PC, PS4, XBO)

MAZ_7

MAZ_V2_RE2_FINAL

Capcom delighted everyone when they announced their plans to remake the beloved survival horror classic that is Resident Evil 2, so we can all move on to the next items on our list, starting with more Dino Crisis, another Outbreak, and something, anything, that stars the Merchant from Resident Evil 4.

Why We’re Exci-For real? It’s a remake of Resident Evil 2. That’s Resident Evil, followed by a 2. Nothing more needs to be said.

Release Date: A long fucking time from now (PC, PS4, XBO)

MAZ_0

MAZ_13

Dying Light 2, and Left 4 Dead 3. We want ’em something fierce, but it’ll likely be a while before we get them. Neither has been officially announced, and that’s okay. They’re still worth mentioning in a list about our most anticipated zombie games. Hell, I’ll even throw the non-conforming zombie game Dead Space 4 in there too. I could probably come up with a few more if I wanted to make myself sad. I don’t though, so let’s wrap this up.

Why We’re Excited:

Release Date: Don’t bother. (That they’ll each make the current console generation is about the best we can hope for until their respective publishers throw us a bone.)

This year’s E3 has come and gone, ushering in the second half of what so far has been a ridiculously good year for horror games. It’ll be interesting to see what the latter half of 2015 has in store for us, and whether or not it’ll be able to match the deluge that we insatiable fans of the genre have enjoyed for a solid six months.

Unfortunately, as spectacular as last week was to be a gamer, there were some notable absences that left me wondering if we’ll see all of the horror games that were previously confirmed for 2015.

Arguably the biggest surprise of them all is a game that’s just three months away.

Friday the 13th: The Video Game

E3MIA_2

Where you at, Jason? We’ve heard nothing from him in the six months that have gone by since it was revealed that a mysterious developer would be bringing us our first Friday the 13th game in over two decades. This game was supposed to join Until Dawn in kicking off a new era of slasher video games, but I don’t see that happening this year seeing as we still know very little about it.

Unofficial Status: Quiet. Too quiet. Don’t be surprised if this gets moved to 2016. Maybe it’ll be ready in time to catch the first Friday the 13th of the year (May 13).

Last Year

Last Year has been quiet since its developer ran into copyright issues back in January. How much of an impact that whole mess had on its development remains to be seen. The team behind it has been fairly consistent in providing updates to their backers on Kickstarter, where the game raised about $83,000 last year.

Summer Camp wasn’t at E3 either, but I’ve been assured that it’s still coming.

Unofficial Status: Backer rewards mention a November 2016 ETA, so it may be aiming for something closer to a fall 2016 release.

Frogwares’ Call of Cthulhu

E3MIA_3

When Magrunner: Dark Pulse developer Frogwares first announced their plans to make a new Call of Cthulhu two Januaries ago, they did so quietly, with concept art. Clearly, the game wasn’t far enough along for a trailer, but I would’ve expected it to have reached that point by now, 18 months after its initial reveal. I fear this game has been cancelled.

Unofficial Status: Worried. Frogwares hasn’t mentioned canning it, even if that does seem to be the fate that befalls most Lovecraftian games. I’m going to take the wait and see approach with this one.

It’s not a stretch to say the first three months of 2015 have been lousy with horror games. We’ve been blessed with a steady drip-feed of spooky scary releases, and I’ve enjoyed how consistent the quality has been. With so many games arriving so closely together, you might expect more failures. That’s made this mostly solid bunch of games even more impressive.

The last three months set the bar high enough that I doubt the rest of 2015 will be able to live up to it. Even still, the remaining nine months could be considerably less exciting and I’d still consider the year a success.

As fond as I am of all these new games, the wet blanket in me can’t help but want to take this joyous time of year and bludgeon it to death with something akin to a freshly used toilet scrubbing brush. Until now, you were probably as satisfied with 2015 as I am. Enjoy that feeling while it lasts, because I’m about to show you how much better this year could’ve been.

That’s actually not true at all. The reason I’ve decided to write this piece, which I’ll admit is a bit of a downer, is because there’s a handful of games that I get asked about on a regular basis, mostly from folks who seem to assume one of the benefits I get from working for Bloody Disgusting involves horror game-exclusive Future Sight.

If you think I’m trying to hide my unusually specific superpower from you, I’d like to direct you to a similarly themed list I wrote last year. So far, an impressive zero of the eight games I said we might not see until 2015 — also known as now — are confirmed 2015 releases. Pessimists might see that as a failure on my part, but they’d be overlooking how impressive it is to attain 0% accuracy.

Let’s see how I fare this year!

We’ve only just begun our descent into the new year and I’m already excited for it. If time were a roller coaster, this would be the bit that comes right after that incredibly slow climb to the top of a hill where the coaster has started its horrifying plunge back to Earth. Depending on who you are, that sudden drop can be the best part, or it can be the worst.

It’s a good thing that’s where the similarities between beginning a new year and riding a roller coaster end. I don’t imagine many of us will be literally losing our heads this year, but I can see a few of us losing them in the figurative sense should this list come true.

Now, before we get into my list of 10 Horror Game Sequels I’d Like to See in 2015, it’s worth mentioning that I don’t expect most of these games to release in 2015. With a few exceptions that I’ll be sure to point out when we get to them, if a game is on this list, that means I’d like to hear from it. That could be a trailer, some new info, a release window, whatever.

All right, let’s go!

Alan Wake 2

2015_AlanWake

I feel like there’s a very good chance that we’ll eventually see a sequel to Alan Wake, which, if you have yet to play it, is easily one of the last generation’s greatest and most underrated video games. It’s a great game with a fervent fan base and a developer that seems very interested in giving the game’s eponymous writer another go.

Established developers have struggled with crowdfunding their games, even if that project is a sequel to a universally beloved survival horror game.

If we hear from Mr. Wake this year, it’ll likely come in the form of another tease.

The year’s biggest gaming event is now less than a month away. E3 always brings with it a slew of exciting headlines for all types of gamers, and like every year I’ll be covering it live, from a dark room where I plan on embracing every gamer stereotype imaginable as I live off energy drinks and little sleep. If my coverage turns to rambling somewhere between June 10-12, just know that I do this for you.

Last year, Sony dominated the convention, and Microsoft, with their one, two, three, four punch that was the PS4’s official unveiling. Microsoft is arguably in a much better place this year with its upcoming $399 Xbox One (sans Kinect) and a more focused “games first” direction, thanks to the new head of Xbox, Phil Spencer.

Oh, and Nintendo has decided to eschew all of the E3 chicanery in favor of a more direct, digital event, which I think is an absolutely terribad idea, but I’ll save that for another feature. For now, let’s focus on a few things I would love to see come out of 2014’s biggest gaming convention: E3 2014.

Maybe we’ll get a remastered version of the game, which now includes all of the content from the original Left 4 Dead, with improved visuals, thanks to Source 2.

This doesn’t necessarily help confirm Left 4 Dead 3, but I’m loving the game’s new look nonetheless. See a larger version of the above pic after the jump.

Earlier this month, we took a gander at the most anticipated horror games of 2014. We laughed, we cried, we reminisced about what’s shaping up to be a fantastic year to be a horror fan. Almost all of them are practically guaranteed to arrive before the next New Year comes along, and they’re all fine reasons to be excited 2014’s offering of horror games. Keep in mind, it’s only January, so we still have several months worth of still-secret projects left to look forward to hearing from.

I’m already plenty excited for 2014, but as we look to the future, I can’t help but wonder about the games we’ll see in 2015. Read on for my list of eight horror games we (probably) won’t see until 2015!

SOMA

I figured we’d go ahead and get the two games on this list that we already know aren’t arriving until 2015 out of the way first. Let’s start with “SOMA”, a mind-bending sci-fi horror game from Frictional Games, the makers of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It’s being made with the intention of “chilling you to your core,” and seeing as it’s being crafted by the team that brought us one of the scariest games of all time, if any studio can accomplish that, it’s Frictional.

Kodoku

When I look at nightmarish horror game “Kodoku”, the primal part of my brain wants to fear it, to run away from the things I’m seeing, because they just aren’t right. With that said, this game looks terrifying, and amazing, but mostly terrifying. It also has a fantastic Japanese style aesthetic to it that draws me in, not unlike a Siren’s call, probably so it can do unmentionable things to me as soon as I’m within grabbing distance.

I think I’m all right with that.

Doom 4

We know it’s coming, and we even know why it’s taking so long, but all that knowledge isn’t making this wait any less painful. There are few franchises that have has as much influence on this industry as “Doom”, and I think I speak for everyone when I say this game cannot come soon enough.

Class 4

Undead Labs has been teasing us with “Class 4” since long before “State of Decay” even released. They’re describing it as a (now Xbox exclusive) zombie survival MMO that expands on the world, mechanics, and gameplay of their fantastic XBLA game. “State of Decay” set the stage, creating a foundation for something far more ambitious, and its follow-up promises to take it all to the next level, starting with the much-requested addition of co-op.

Valve’s database was made public, again, and this time the Internet was able to find the core team of developers working on both Left 4 Dead 3 and Half-Life 3 — the former we’ve known is in the works, the latter one of gaming’s worst kept secrets.

There are some big names attached to each game, including Chet Faliszek (Left 4 Dead series writer), Jess Cliffe (Counter-Strike) and Doug Church (System Shock, Thief) who are all working on Left 4 Dead 3, as well as Erik Wolpaw (Portal), Kelly Bailey (Half-Life series composer), Sergiy Migdalskiy (Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Far Cry) and Marc Laidlaw (Half-Life) working on Half-Life 3. The teams are largely comprised of fairly well-known Valve veterans and experienced designers, writers and composers.

We know they’re coming, it’s just a matter of time. Unfortunately, it’s Valve time.

Multiple anonymous sources have confirmed to Rock Paper Shotgun that Left 4 Dead 3, which was spotted in an internal changelog during a recent tour of Valve’s Bellevue-based office, is in fact the real deal. It’s not all that surprising, seeing as Valve would have to be insane to not make another game in a series that’s sold well over twelve million copies. Even still, it feels good to get some confirmation on the rumor, even if they’re of the anonymous variety.

Valve has more or less confirmed that another Left 4 Dead is coming, it’s really just a matter of when. Like Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster, or any other Valve game, Left 4 Dead 3 has been hinted at in blurry photos and found in ancient archives, where brave virtual explorers have risked their lives in order to find any trace of a game many of us so desperately want to play. It’s name has been whispered in the darkest threads of the Internet by those who say they’ve seen it with their own two eyes, yet after years of rumors, no one’s managed to find any real evidence of its existence.

Go ahead and add this to the growing pile of rumors and speculation. Valve recently held a tour of their Bellevue-based office, where an eagle-eyed Dota 2 player successfully managed to get a picture of Valve’s internal changelog. On that list of current projects is none other than Left 4 Dead 3. More after the jump.

In case you don’t want to try and find the line yourself, here it is:

If you’re a fan of Valve’s games — and really, how could you not be — you’re probably all-too-familiar with the company’s seeming inability to reach the number 3. With no third entry in the Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, or Portal series (I know, that last one isn’t completely fair) in sight, it’s almost as if Valve has something against trilogies. That may soon change.

A sleuthy developer may have stumbled across something that might hint at an in-development Left 4 Dead 3. The dev, who has since been banned for violating Steam’s Terms of Use, but not before he found the game listed in the SteamWorks database. “I brute forced it in a way, there were lots of interesting things I found. L4D3 was the most interesting although it hasn’t been updated in months so it may be dead.” More after the break.

It would seem almost stupid obvious to make a new game that’s both critically acclaimed and has sold a staggering 12 million copies, but that’s not how Valve works. To the frustration of many a gamer, they take their time.

If you’re a gamer, you’re undoubtedly already fully aware of how stupefyingly awesome last week was. If you’re not a gamer, than let me take a second to fill you in. Last week, nearly every video game company in the country migrated to Los Angeles so they could spend a few days blowing our minds.

They did this by showing off new hardware — including a saucy battle between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 — and announcing tons of exciting new games. Among these big reveals were a myriad horror games, both from indie developers and high profile publishers, that all look absolutely terrifying. Unfortunately, even though we saw from the likes of Daylight, Outlast, Dying Light and Dead Rising 3 — there were still many highly anticipated games that didn’t make an appearance.

After the break I have eight horror games I really wanted to see more from last week, but didn’t. Check them out, and let me know what I missed in the comments!

I am so bummed we didn’t hear anything from inSANE. It was a long shot, but come on, Mirror’s Edge 2 and Kingdom Hearts III were just as unlikely and we saw both.

It doesn’t necessarily mean director Guillermo Del Toro’s exciting foray into video games has been canned; Dead Island and The Evil Within (previously known as project Zwei) both went silent before we resurfacing again a year (or two) later. I do hope Del Toro finds a developer, a publisher, and all the money he could possibly need, because a Lovecraftian action horror game from the mastermind behind Pan’s Labyrinth sounds incredible.

This is a game we know little about, outside of the possibility that it may or may not feature creepy dolls. It might not even be a horror game.

What has me most excited for this is the developer behind it. It’s Climax! You know, the team behind two of the best (recent) Silent Hill games, Origins and Shattered Memories. They understand psychological horror, so if this does end up being a horror game that sees the light of day, I have full faith they’ll deliver something that’s truly terrifying.

Okay, yes, this is a little unfair. Bethesda is busier than ever promoting their current projects — an arsenal of hugely anticipated games that includes The Elder Scrolls Online (now coming to next-gen consoles, as well as PC!), Wolfenstein: The New Order and The Evil Within. Asking them to show us something from Doom 4 when they already have plenty coming is almost definitely asking too much. With that said, I don’t care, just show me the damn game already.

If you can’t do that, I’ll settle for an explanation as to what Endless Summer is, or even something related to Fallout. Maybe more on that Skyrim follow-up, too…

Robotoki is working on a post-apocalyptic survival game called Human Element. It sounds amazing, and not just because it has Robert Bowling, former lead and creative strategist on the Modern Warfare series, behind it. This is the only game on this list that’s coming to the Ouya console, so I hope they show us something soon. Last we heard, the plan was to launch an episodic prequel exclusively on the Ouya, followed by the “full” Human Element some time in 2015.

With the PS4 officially revealed and a potential Xbox announcement incoming, the next generation of consoles is almost upon us. This means we’ll have brand new games to look forward to — like Watch Dogs, Human Element, and Bungie’s Destiny — as well as a slew of sequels to franchises we’ve grown to love over the years. It seems like we’ve been inundated with sequels lately, and that includes the horror genre (Resident Evil 6, Dead Space 3, Silent Hill: Downpour, etc.). However, there are a few games that just need sequels. Here are six of them.

Alan Wake is one of my favorite horror games of all time, because it’s different. It’s story is wonderfully strange and as a relatively new series with only two games — the other being American Nightmare — it still has a lot of potential. Remedy has been a huge tease about the all-but-confirmed sequel, and while I would’ve liked to see more Alan Wake sooner rather than later, the possibility of a next-gen sequel is exciting enough to make me more than willing to wait.

The original Condemned was a launch title for the Xbox 360, so I have hopes that the reason we haven’t heard from the series since 2008. That was five years ago. Can you believe it? How dare Monolith leave us with the cliffhanger that was Bloodshot’s ending like that for so long. It’s criminal. The series has seen moderate success, so I can only hope that something is in the works. If a third game is in development, they are doing a mighty fine job of laying low.

Let’s forget about Operation Raccoon City for a minute. Let’s say Capcom was going through an experimental phase — I went to college, I understand, it happens — no judgment. But seriously, get on that. There’s no reason to not give fans the game we’ve been clamoring for since forever. In my opinion, the best way to go about it would be by releasing it as a multiplayer XBLA game. Make it cheap ($10 for each episode), focus on the co-op, and make it episodic. Telltale laid the ground work with The Walking Dead and I dare say the Resident Evil name is more widely recognized than TWD, so I don’t see it failing. Pretty please?

I’ve really been trying to give Eternal Darkness as as many mentions as possible. I do this because I care. Also because I really, really want another Eternal Darkness game. The original was so mind-bogglingly (new word?) awesome that it stuns me we haven’t seen anything from it for over a decade.

Fatal Frame hasn’t gone anywhere, and that’s the problem. It’s been stuck in Japan where it can’t be fully appreciated. Crimson Butterfly is still one of the most unsettling gaming experiences I’ve ever had, as well as one of my favorites. I’d love to go snap some pictures of ghosts, but for some reason the series has been relegated to a small corner of this big beautiful place we call Earth. And no, Spirit Camera doesn’t count.

I hesitated putting this on the list because frankly, I’m sick of Valve. I know, it’s blasphemous, and I don’t necessarily mean that as a slight against them. Valve makes amazing games and Steam is fantastic — I’m just so tired of waiting for them to actually make games. Left 4 Dead, Half-Life 2: Episode 3… it’s tiring being a Valve fan. I’m sure a third Left 4 Dead game is coming and it will almost certainly make beautiful use of the Steam Box, I only hope we don’t have to wait five more years to see it.

It’s no secret Valve enjoys trolling their audience, but seriously guys, Left 4 Dead isn’t just a game, it’s a way of life. So when you’re “a little coy” with the rumored collaboration, as Valve’s Chet Faliszek put it, you’re ruining lives. Speaking with PCGamesN, Faliszek said “We’re trying to be a little coy and a little fun because we want the communities to discover it.” Head past the break for more on this collaboration.

“[The project] is kind of akin to how in TF2 you might see some other games’ weapons get translated and put into that game. We’re doing something similar to that, but it’s a little bit more involved.”

Chet refused to give out any details regarding the project between Valve and Overkill Entertainment. “Again. I don’t want to give it away, because we want the community to explore and find it, but I want to make sure that people don’t think the prequel is coming. If that happens, then it will make this other thing we’re doing feel uncool, when the thing we’re doing is really cool. I mean, the problem is, if you make a rumor, and you can make the rumor anything, you’re going to make the rumor really, really cool. And that makes everything else sound less cool,” he added.

No Left 4 Dead prequel, sequel, or spin-off for us. Still, whatever they’re working on could be fantastic, it’s just not going to be quite as exciting as what fans of the two companies originally thought. Let’s have a moment of silence for what could’ve been.

Last month Payday: The Heist developer Overkill Entertainment revealed they are currently hard at work on a collaborative effort with Valve that’s a “very cool blend of Payday and Left 4 Dead.” Not much else about the game was announced at the time, but according to a source at CVG this game could be a prequel to Left 4 Dead. “We are working on a very cool blend of Payday and Left 4 Dead. I am sure it is so exciting that it will have some players check into the hospital before we are done.” said a statement from Overkill regarding the announcement. Could this mean we’ll finally find out how the outbreak began? So far, the Left 4 Dead series has been largely void of a real plot, so some details regarding the cause of the zombie apocalypse in a prequel sounds good to me. What do you think?

I’ll try my hardest not to start violently sobbing while I write this, but you can be sure that as soon as I hit ‘Publish’ I’m immediately going to turn off the lights, lie down on my floor and weep silently while singing to myself until the bad thoughts go away. In case you were hoping for some news regarding any of Valve’s unannounced titles like Half-Life 3, Left 4 Dead 3 and Portal 3, it sounds like none of them will be making an appearance at E3 next month. According to Valvetime.net, the disheartening news came from an e-mail exchange with Gabe Newell, who said “We’re not announcing anything. Really. We are not announcing Half-Life 3 or Portal 3 or Left 4 Dead 3.” I’m positive next month will be chock-full of incredible reveals, but this has definitely dampened my mood a bit. How about you? Which of these highly anticipated sequels were you most looking forward to hearing from?
