Monday around noon EST, artists menton3, David Stoupakis, and Damien Echols unveiled their first Kickstarter, SALEM, under their art collective name The Hand. This Kickstarter doubled its funding goal in less than two hours, and by the end of the night, had tripled it and then some.

This interview is not about the Kickstarter, but about the men behind it, the philosophies that go into the art and especially this specific project SALEM, and without sounding overly idealistic, it’s about making some changes.

I had the insane pleasure of chatting with one of the three members of The Hand, menton3, a man whose mind is genuinely as inspirational and deep as his art. We spoke about this new art collective and its place within 44Flood, bond with Damien Echols and David Stoupakis through menton3’s deep appreciation for his partners in art. And learn more about the gallery show and book that will open up the Salem Witch Trials for all of us on both a literal and abstract level of consciousness through several forms of art.

The SALEM book will be written by Damien Echols and will be a 9×13.5″ hardcover book at 72 pages. The book will feature the artworks Damien, David, and menton3 created for the gallery show along with discussions on the pieces, as well as stories and new perspectives on the events leading up to, and during, the Salem witch trials.

“The Fly: Outbreak” #2 takes us through the first 17 days of quarantine after everyone is exposed to the “disease” during Bartok’s escape.  Martin sits in solitary secretly video chatting with Beth while tension grow among the quarantined.  The disease is spreading fast and it affects the mind in really scary ways.  The looming creepiness of Cronenberg’s films is invoked in this slightly stretched and overly sexual issue.

WRITTEN BY: Brandon Seifert

ART BY: Menton3

PUBLISHER: IDW

PRICE: $3.99

RELEASE: April 22, 2015

Martin describes the stages of transformation in great detail as the disease begins to take hold within the quarantine.  The visuals paired with his explanation are a welcome plot device, but the symptoms and effects of stage one alone were so many that by the end it’s impossible to keep it all straight.  Then Noelani breaks it down pretty succinctly: exposure turns you into a paranoid, aggressive, horny, super human.  As more people begin to exhibit symptoms Martin expresses his feelings of responsibility for them.  His motivation and sense of desperation are hardly overwhelming. The book struggles to convey anything in subtext. The events in this issue could have happened in half the pages without losing anything at all, and the pacing is laborious.

Menton3’s style commands admiration. Even his work in the first issue is incredible, but somehow on these pages his work looks lifeless. Every person in the book is stiff like early PC character models.  The frame where the man hurls the table and the red headed woman are especially plastic and look like bad video games.  The art is at its best when Menton3 is using extreme contrast to silhouette the characters, thankfully thats most of the book.  There’s really not a lot to love with the visual style.

Speaking of love, the series is shoving sex down the throats of its readers in a way that seems pointless.  If the kink in issue one didn’t give you a clue wait until you see that weird ass shot, bareback boning, giant dildo, and constant fuck talk this issue shoe horns in.  It isn’t sexy, it doesn’t feel authentic, and it certainly doesn’t create any kind of juxtaposition to seem like its making a point.  It just seems forced to channel this Cronenbergian idea of sexuality, but fails to do so. Cronenberg is about subtextual attraction to abnormality, through the connective tissue of what makes inanimate objects more human, and how the human body can defy the human mind. It seems that Brandon Seifert doesn’t understand any of this.

This is the book no one asked for, and even those open to being convinced still probably won’t be.  Your $4 can be better spent elsewhere.  Diehard fans likely won’t be disgusted with this sequel. (In fact please let me know if there are any die hard Cronenberg fans out there digging this book)  There is simply a lot out there with a lot more quality.  Avoid this, if you want strange, try “Intersect” by Ray Fawkes

David Cronenberg’s The Fly is one of the most iconic horror movies of all time. It ushered in a new era of practical horror effects and cemented the directors legacy in body horror, but few people realize there was a sequel. The sequel certainly didn’t have the same legacy, or really any of the redeeming qualities of the first film. However, IDW Publishing aims to recapture the almighty glory of Cronenberg with The Fly: Outbreak.

Our own Eric Switzer was a fan of the first issue, citing “If you like “The Fly” you’ll like this.  If you don’t like or know “The Fly” you shouldn’t bother with this.  But you should appreciate that it exists either way, because some day your super niche cancelled tv show or B-horror movie can become a comic book, and that’s a real joy for me.”

“The Fly: Outbreak” is a continuation of “The Fly” series that started with the 1986 Cronenberg film.  This series picks up after the events of “The Fly 2” and follows Martin as he attempts to cure Anton of his mutant condition.  Adaptation and continuation is one of my favorite things about comics.  Unlocking the unlimited potential of storytelling is an incredible ability this medium has, and it is no more epitomized than in this continuation of a 1989 sequel.  Fans of “The Fly” may rejoice, no matter how limited your ranks may be: there is nothing not to like here. I love comic book continuation.  “Buffy Season 8” was actually what first got my into comic book in high school.  There are no budget constraints, actor availability issues, and, in this case, public demand doesn’t seem to be a major factor either.  Not to bash on “The Fly”, it is a classic sci-fi horror film that I enjoyed quite a bit.  But I also haven’t thought about it in years and I’m willing to bet you haven’t either.

Now the story gets to continue, and I reminded of all these characters and the tone of style of the films, translated beautifully and eerily by Menton3, and I’m delighted to read it.  It reminds me that any story can live on infinitely, and in comics there doesn’t even need to be a huge buy-in from a studio or a fan base.  One quirky publisher known for continuations can revive something even as obscure as “The Fly 2”.

Martin has so baggage about his unnatural origins.  Why he continues to work on Anton’s condition, other than the pursuit of science, I’m not entirely sure.  But we find him in the lab doing experiments on the creature and discussing his vasectomy with his assistant.  After a bit of BDSM with his girlfriend Martin returns the next day to find that the creature has powered up and is currently on a rampage through the facility melting people’s faces off.  Martin catches up to Anton who uses a smart phone to call him son and tell him to confess that he turned him into a monster.  Anton escapes and everyone that was exposed to him is put into quarantine.

It is all fairly straightforward so far, but what struck me Menton3’s creature work.  I loved what he was doing in “Monocyte” a few years ago, and I’ve seen a few other IDW books he’s done recently, but I really loved his monster here.  It was sort of inconsistent in representation, but I think that really added to the twisted reality bending horror of it.  I would love to see him do something with “The Thing” in the future.

If you like “The Fly” you’ll like this.  If you don’t like or know “The Fly” you shouldn’t bother with this.  But you should appreciate that it exists either way, because some day your super niche cancelled tv show or B-horror movie can become a comic book, and that’s a real joy for me.

This is one I’ve had to be tight lipped on for some time. I was genuinely surprised today when they announced the book, but that doesn’t undercut my excitement. This is something that will change the face of licensed horror comics. The creative team of Brand Seifert and Menton3 will bring the world of Cronenberg’s masterwork to the forefront and hopefully continue the story in a really interesting way. To say I’m excited is an understatement.

The story that began in David Cronenberg‘s film update of The Fly continues here with a five-issue miniseries The Fly: Outbreak written by Brandon Seifert (Hellraiser,Witch Doctor) with painted interior and cover art by menton3 (Silent Hill, Monocyte). Issue one will hit in March and will boast variant covers by Jason Edmiston and Lukas Ketner.

Years ago, a scientist had a horrific accident when he tried to use his newly invented teleportation device and became a human/fly hybrid. Now his almost-human son continues to search for a cure for the mutated genes. But a breakthrough turns into a breakout, and anyone exposed risks turning into a monster as well…

“To be totally honest, The Fly is one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen!” said Seifert. “It was really resonant for its time. And in the last 20 years or so, with all the advances in Genetically Modified Organisms, the film has taken on a lot of meaning it didn’t originally have. It’s really exciting to explore those elements in this miniseries — and great to have an amazing, super-distinctive artist like menton3 on the visuals!”

“Equal parts gory allegory and tragic love story, The Fly Vwas perhaps David Cronenberg’s crowning achievement,” editor Denton J. Tipton said. “That’s a lot to live up to, but I believe Brandon and Menton are equal to the task. The script is sharp and poignant, and the art is visceral and haunting. No one is safe!”

Nothing spreads faster than fear… be part of the outbreak March 2015.

Saltillo, the musical project behind menton3 (aka Menton J. Matthews III), will be releasing a deluxe, special edition vinyl of the upcoming album Katabasis, which comes out in early october. The record will feature 12 brand new tracks and is described by Matthews as “his darkest yet”.

The term katabasis originates in Ancient Greece and spans both religion and time in its usage. With credence to mythology, katabasis describes a descent to the underworld, popularly taken by heroes, most notably, Orpheus in pursuit of Eurydice, but may also be a description for one’s journey through unfavorable capacities. Generally speaking, this journey may be traversed within multiple realms or planes of being, ergo, the otherworld.

I’m obsessed with a good writer/artist pairing in comics. The kind that makes me excited just on word alone. Writer Steve Niles and artist Menton3 provide that sort of ambitious coupling that sends chills straight to my gut in this month’s special “Nosferatu Wars” one-shot. And when combined with the word and context behind “Nosferatu” you know it’s going to be “bag and board” worthy.

WRITTEN BY: Steve Niles

ART BY: Menton3

PUBLISHER: Dark Horse
PRICE: $3.99

RELEASE: March 12, 2014

The plot of this horror one-shot is introductory. There is no beginning, middle, end. There are a series of events shadowing vampires Tarquin and Moria as they live, love, fight, and hunt during the black plague. In order to give us some context of their lives, Niles seamlessly interlaces flashbacks and possible flash-forwards. This technique also serves to make the plotlines time frames enigmatic. We’re not quite sure which plotline has us in the present. Overall, this creates a circular-type understanding of their existence, which is simply impressive.

Niles sets up an interesting character dynamic. Two vampire lovers against the world, “enemies in life, lovers in death” …and other romantic literary tropes are added into a juxtaposition of the pair’s humanity and their absolutely brutal impulses. In a landscape of literary bipolar disorder, Tarquin and Moria go from gentle, kind beings, to loyalty-driven vigilantes, love-driven murderers, utterly brutal fiends and back again. His writing really accentuates this as he uses a gothic-romance tone—a tone that’s fairly rare for Niles though shockingly unique to his writing.

True to Menton3’s artistic nature, the color palette is dark and rich, the faces and bodies are harsh and slender throughout the two styles of illustration he ping-pongs between in “Nosferatu Wars”. When his more sketch-like, rudimentary illustrations break into his velvety gallery-style art it’s like a high–voltage current running to your shock collar. It exacerbates the fear and heightens the senses in handpicked panels.

Without giving anything away, I must confess the ending twist made me laugh for an abrupt moment. I’m still not sure how I feel about it but a.) I believe in the future, we will get an answer on why this twist was important to utilize, and b.) it’s a fresh take on the vampire genre. Like…a never before seen take. The one-shot ends on this twist leaving you slightly unsatisfied and craving more.

I enjoyed getting acquainted with Tarquin and Moria, consuming the stunning art, and obsessing over the hauntingly beautiful bloodshed. Though the plot was not completely stand-alone, which is uncharacteristic of a one-shot comic, I do think (and hope) that we will see these characters in a series of one-shots. Or however it’s done, I believe we will see more of this nicely established world and its brilliant characters.

Joe Harris makes the brilliant choice to go back and shed some light on one of the more elusive X-Files characters and in doing so provides one of the most entertaining and illuminating chapters of the series thus far. This is a high point for the “X-Files Season 10” that’s brought to life by the haunting work of Menton3.

The Cigarette Smoking Man has been one of the most recognizable figures to emerge off the X-Files. He was nefarious in the course of the series and the revelations about his past served to humanize him in a staggering way. Harris wraps this month’s issue around the CSM, and sheds some light on the illusive figure once and for all.

The story is told almost entirely in flashback. We’re given brief hints to CSM’s military past, and who he was before the events of the series. These moments are poignant because they sow the seeds for disillusionment. Showing a man who was comfortable with being the ultimate tool of the government devolve into a pawn, and the rage that comes along with it.

There are beautiful moments in this issue. Seeing little Mulder run up to his father and having him say “The truth will set you free” shows a small moment that is seemingly responsible for everything. It’s just the type of flashback you want because it influences everything that came after organically.

Menton3’s work this month is more subdued than his usual efforts. Yet, it works to brilliant effect. The flashback sequences are drawn with a sense of old paper, as if Menton3 is helping you sort through coffee stained documents in a dingy basement. The color is sapped out.

When the color returns, Meton3’s vivid character work bursts onto the page and articulates the characters with such detail that it’s stunning. Plus, he finds time to work in one of his horrific creature designs. Possibly the best panel of a monster this series has seen yet.

This issue will burrow into the minds of long time fans. The ramifications are not necessarily clear, and the answers don’t really take the story in a new direction, but they offer so much insight into a character that you’ll come to see CSM with a new lens. He was betrayed, cast out, and before he was much like his own son. Perhaps even an idealist.

I could read a series of the young CSM’s adventures alone. Seeing the cancer man as a youthful protagonist was a refreshing breath of fresh air in a series that sometimes forgets to breath. I can’t recommend the issue enough since long time fans will finally get some answers that they seek and newcomers will be taken on a harrowing journey that destroys a man’s morals.

Rating: 4.5/5 Skulls.

Nearly a month ago, we announced the start of Menton3’s new Kickstarter campaign for an art book based on his first solo show, KATABASIS (show coming in April). The campaign quickly passed its monetary goal, bringing with it a slew of new rewards for various pledges including original Tarot Prints and additional pages added to the book. Pledges have been treated to multiple video updates via Menton3 detailing his artistic process. Overall, it’s been a kickass campaign.

Now, in the final days, Menton3 takes some time to dive deep with BloodyDisgusting into his studio, his mind, and the world of KATABASIS. He treats us to some invaluable words of wisdom and dares us to take a closer look at our own dark psyches.

BD: How did the theme of KATABASIS come about?

M3: Pretty much all the time when I’m painting outside of comics, I’m painting under a certain theme and when I was asked to do the Last Rites show, KATABASIS was one of the ideas I had to continue painting under. One of the things I don’t like is going to solo shows and seeing that they’ve kind of just put a bunch of ideas on the wall that don’t really have a continuity within them. Then sometimes people do shows in which there’s too much continuity. So for me, KATABASIS was rich enough of an area for me to go to and pull from and at the same time knowing that everything would have continuity and a story within it. The other thing is that this is my first solo show and I know that doing a show underneath this theme while living it would change me and I like the idea of having that journal type situation up on the walls of a gallery where there’s a progression of a psychological change that’s occurring within me almost through forced attrition.

BD: This is an extremely personal campaign. What emotions were you riding before and during this Kickstarter?

M3: I’m always very nervous before the beginning of any Kickstarter and obviously like you said this one is very personal so I was extremely nervous. It’s really hard to articulate what it was exactly that I was nervous about. I’m not sure the nerves ever really go away once the goal is met. It’s more like a feeling of responsibility and awe as to the people who contributed and it just feels like, you know, not to sound cheesy or corny but it almost feels like a big giant hug and you just want to make sure that you’re doing everything you can to repay that back. You know a lot of the work starts once the goal is met, like “How can we improve the book?” “What more can we do?” It’s always amazing with every Kickstarter we’ve done because I’m pretty much convinced before we start it that there’s no way we’re ever going to get anywhere with it. There’s no way people care. And with this one, since it was just about my solo show, it was even more so like “why would anyone give a shit?” So I was pretty taken aback and pretty shocked that it went so well, so fast. I have to say that it was really awesome to see.

BD: Can you tell us about your painting process each day? Do you have any rituals? A set time to work? Or do you just paint when the mood strikes you? Give us a peek under the menton3 curtain.

M3: I think painting when the mood strikes you is a pretty bad thing for an artist. The way that I see it is that if you’re going to try to be an artist, you’ve just gotta paint. I don’t believe in motivation. I believe in determination more than I believe in motivation. I think a lot of people sit around waiting to be motivated. And I don’t think you can sustain something like that. You have to learn how to work regardless of how you’re feeling or regardless of what is going on in your life. You have to learn how to work. As for my process, it’s a bit strange I guess you’d say. Each painting tends to be somewhat different. I usually get an idea and I work on it for a long time before I even start trying to come up with sketches or anything. Before paint even hits the panel or canvas, I usually have the idea fairly worked out. You never really know how it’s going to go. I don’t know if it is going to be good or bad or anything until it’s finished. It doesn’t really work with a lot of chaos, I try to stay very, very focused on what I want to do because I don’t want there to just be crazy stuff on a canvas. I’m trying to actually say something at times and you know it’s very important to me that I’m honest with the people that are interested in my work. I don’t want to lie to them, I don’t want to do things artistically that are just to look pretty or be cool. I really want to say something and I need to know that I put the thought behind the painting enough to where in my own head it says something, so I tend to work a lot.

BD: Going into a really dark place–as you said in your KATABASIS video: “the darkest places of my own psyche, fears, phobias, anxieties…” has to be a fairly terrifying task to take on. Did you find that it had an effect on your life outside of your art? How do you start that journey?

M3: How I start that journey is by choosing to do it and going into my own psyche and meditations and allowing the stuff that wants to come up, to come up, and trying to kind of go at them. As for it affecting my life that is kind of always the case, that’s not just especially true with KATABASIS. I’m always painting stuff that I feel like, and taking what I’m currently going through in my life and in my head and trying to figure out ways of articulating that onto panel. I think if your art isn’t affecting your life outside of art, something’s kind of wrong. Again, I think you’re kind of lying to the audience if you’re just making pretty pictures.

BD: A lot of artists struggle through darkness, as it were, and don’t know how to creatively release it. Being that KATABASIS is an artistic journey through personal darkness, do you have any advice or thoughts on how to curb darkness into a creative project?

M3: I think that the subconscious is always trying to bring stuff through so I think really, honestly, if you want it and you ask for it, its pretty much already there. At least I’ve always found that it’s pretty much already there. I have known people that have a hard time bringing it to the surface. But for me, like I said it’s pretty much there if I look for it. I don’t know if I’m fortunate and it comes easy to me to do stuff like that. I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but just try to remain honest with yourself. A lot of times we see stuff in our head that’s dark and that’s not easy to deal with. I kind of have a rule, “if it’s not hard for you to make this painting or it’s not hard for you to get this out, you’re doing it wrong.”

BD: When you do something like this, you are so obviously giving a lot of yourself over to your audience. Does this sort of project take anything out of you that you feel like you never get back? What do you gain in return?

M3: I’m not of the opinion that there’s a limit to psychological content like that. Yeah, I think a part of me goes in to every painting as it does pretty much any artist, but I don’t feel like there’s a limit to it. I don’t feel like I’m missing something. It’s just another part of me.

BD: In addition to being an art book, KATABASIS appears to be a sort of art journal as well. Can you tell us more about that? Would you give it other attributes?

M3: I think a journal is a good way of putting it. I’ve been calling it that a lot lately. I am going to be talking about the techniques I utilize, as well as what materials I use. So a big portion of it will be process-related. But I do think that a journal is a great way of looking at it. It’s an art book that’s also covering not just the paintings themselves but also the work that went into it and what the work meant to me.

BD: Can you tell us one thing we wouldn’t expect to expect from KATABASIS?

M3: I think I’m trying a bunch of new things with painting. I think I’m pushing the techniques and the things that I’m doing with my paintings themselves and having the show be what it is. The paintings are allowing me to really experiment a lot with a bunch of different subject matter and compositions. So something I’m really excited about is to get feedback on KATABASIS and see if people either love them or hate them.

BD: Can we expect to see you at any cons in the near future?

M3: Absolutely. I will be at C2E2 in Chicago and I’m pretty sure I’ll be at NYCC. We might be doing Wizard World Chicago as well.

BD: Word association with Menton3:

Creativity: Responsibility

Fear: Hope

Love: Wife

Hate: No comment

Darkness: Beauty

Soul: Concrete

Journey: Manifestation

There are still roughly two days left to become a backer for Menton3’s KATABASIS Kickstarter campaign where you can pledge for artistic goodies like t-shirts, original Menton3 art, previous 44Flood books, and of course, the slipcased hardcover edition of KATABASIS.

Menton3’s solo show runs from April 19th to May 24th at Last Rites Gallery in New York.

“Do not confuse having your eyes open with being awake” Lapis tells Edith. And it’s immediately clear to me: this issue is Edith’s awakening. Menton3 has written a piece of work so gut wrenching and overpowering — I’m purposefully avoiding the word “profound” because it feels too cliché — that it sounds trite to call it a ‘comic book’. Not that comic books can’t be deep and insightful, but just like the characters that Menton3 has crafted in “The Memory Collectors”, this comic stands on a higher realm.

If you’ve read the first two issues of this series, you know that Menton3 combines heady, gallery-worthy art, thought-provoking dialogue, and (rarely seen in comic books) several pages of compelling prose. In the past two issues, the prose has served more as an information-vehicle—a break between narration and dialogue in order to aid the reader in understanding such a weighty plotline. However, in this concluding issue the prose serves as emotional insight, thus making it far more poignant than its predecessors.

Watching Edith experience so many transformations and yet having the strength to realize that she is not part of the changes rather they are a part of her, is nothing short of inspirational. As I mention above, this issue is Edith’s awakening. Pummeled with dense hardships, life-changing mutations, and terrifying new obligations, she manages to take them in stride. She’s witnessed selfless, horrific sacrifices made by her beloved sisters Beatrice and Magdalena, and though it would be simple to just let go and stop fighting, she’s too principled, albeit innocent, to let those sacrifices die in vain.

Menton3 utilizes common scripting format to move the plot along while using prose to drive the reader into a fugue state full of gripping sensations. In particular, the first prose section will reach its hand into your chest cavity, grab hold of your heart and tug like a helpless child in need. The sentimentalities that are touched upon so eloquently are enormously universal. I can’t imagine one single reader who won’t relate to at least one pain, heartache, or crushing responsibility emphasized within the walls of this issue.

What I appreciate most about these female powerhouses is their ability to brush off any tired misconceptions about the fairer sex. Yes, their emotions run deep but their intuition, instinct, rage, control, and logical decision-making balance out any so-called “female” platitudes. Menton3 shreds the tropes of the genre and uses the scraps to rebuild a new type of stylistic storytelling. One with moxie, deep philosophical and theological undertones, metaphysical writing, and long lasting reverberations in the hearts and minds of his audience. And in line with any excellent writing, Menton3 keeps you guessing until the very end. There was not one single moment when I knew (or even thought I knew) what was coming next.

This is a comic about change, acceptance, love, responsibility, and reaching your full potential. But don’t let those poetics completely fool you. It’s got blood and guts, hot-ass fetish models, and all sorts of evil beings. It truly is… the complete package.

Menton3 has been teasing the word KATABASIS for a week now, and through my Internet sleuthing, all I could determine was that it was to be a gallery show at the dark and sexy LAST RITES GALLERY in New York City. My West Coast heart shrank to Grinch proportions.

Then the gods of great art shone down on me in the form of a new Kickstarter campaign. Menton3 has turned his gallery show into a book and we have the opportunity to support it, win some perks, and (for those of us not able to make it to New York) attend the show in our own special way.

Hit the jump for the official press release and kickstarter.

Oficial Press Release from 44Flood:

menton3 has just launched his new Kickstarter, KATABASIS!

In Greek mythology, a Katabasis was the journey to the otherworld leading into one’s interiority to confront elements of one’s psyche.

On April 19, 2014, menton3 will have his first ever solo gallery show at the illustrious Last Rites Gallery in New York City with KATABASIS as the theme.

To coincide with the gallery show, menton3 has asked for support so that he may create a book about this theme as well as chronicle his process in creating the gallery show.

The limited run Katabasis hardcover book will be put together by menton3 and frequent collaborator, Kasra Ghanbari. The book will be 9.25×11″ with 72 pages and will include all the works presented at menton3’s Last Rites Gallery show along with preliminary sketches, drawings, oil paintings, and other developmental works that were part of his own inward journey to draw forth the images for the gallery show. The book will also include information about Katabasis from mythological tales, especially the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, as well as experiences and understandings from menton3’s own Katabasis and how the pieces created relate to them.

You can find the Kickstarter campaign here. Go forth and support great art!

44FLOOD and IDW Publishing’s first joint venture will be “Libretto: Volume 1: Vampirism”. As with the first edition of their “TOME” anthology series, the book will feature a wide variety of artists, each exploring the theme of vampirism as they see fit.

Official Press Release:

San Diego, CA (January 10, 2013) – 44FLOOD’s first project developed with IDW Publishing is LIBRETTO, a 9×12” anthology presenting emerging and world-class artists as they explore a single theme using diverse mediums such as comics, oil painting, photography, sculpting and more.

The libretto refers to the part of an opera or a musical that is the words or lyrics, and is distinct from the music. 44FLOOD’s LIBRETTO will be the “text” to the “music” that is a central theme, starting with LIBRETTO Volume 1: Vampirism coming this April.

LIBRETTO Volume 1 is curated/edited by Kasra Ghanbari and has the theme vampirism, being the misuse of power, as well as the objectification and exploitation of others. Featured contributors give their unique perspectives on this theme, with many sections including an interview of the contributor conducted by another artist.

“We’re excited to have LIBRETTO launch our partnership with IDW,” said Kasra Ghanbari, CEO of 44FLOOD. “LIBRETTO has both narrative and symbolic works, comic book panels and gallery paintings, alchemical approaches and comedy. It celebrates the ability of art to affect the way we consider and see the world.”

This 200-page softcover will feature contributors that include Ben Templesmith, David Stoupakis, Riley Rossmo, Christopher Mitten, George Pratt, menton3, and many, many more. Several of the artists also give a rare look at the techniques and processes they used to create pieces for the book. This is your rare opportunity to explore the dark world of vampirism as seen in an artist’s mind.

44FLOOD is an artist collective and publisher formed by Kasra Ghanbari, Ben Templesmith, and menton3. More information may be found at http://www.44FLOOD.com.

This year was, unquestionably, a beautiful success in the world of visually stunning comic book art. The sheer amount of gorgeously illustrated, and intensely inspiring, works being created by insanely talented individuals seemed to be at a remarkable high. So, the idea of choosing just a few artists to represent this year’s “Best” could seem like an excruciatingly trying task, given the myriad of admirable choices available. Fortunately, the process couldn’t have been more simple and painless, and the artists chosen couldn’t be more deserving.

Ranked for the sake of competition and good old heated discussion, here’s my list for this year’s Top 3 Comic Book Artists of 2013.

Lonmonster (Best) | Jimbus_Christ (Best Debut Issues) | Jorge Solis (Best) | Shadow Jayd (Best Covers) | GreenBasterd (Best) | Brady (Best OGNs/Ongoings) | Bree Ogden (Best Kills)

SHADOWJAYD’S TOP 2 ARTISTS OF 2013
3. Fiona Staples

It should be no surprise to see Fiona Staples on a “Best Artist” list, considering the widely positive reception she’s garnered for the critically acclaimed and outstanding work she’s been dishing out for Brian K. Vaughan’s “Saga”. The book, which is published by Image Comics, has been accumulating an impressive mantle of accolades and industry-wide recognition in the past year. From a British Fantasy Award, a Hugo Award, 2 Eisner Awards, and 6 whopping Harvey Awards—including one for “Best Artist” and “Best Colourist”, Staples has more than earned her place on this list.

Her imaginative and unparalleled character designs, along with the visually compelling universe she’s crafted, has won fandom’s hearts, and made her distinguishably unique style undoubtedly recognizable and wholeheartedly adored. From dazzling covers that are fantastic enough to be framed, to striking interiors that engage and emote effectively, her work effortlessly speaks volumes of elegance and colourful flair. If this past year is any indication for what to expect from the likes of Fiona Staples and her creative genius, next year will be absolutely promising.

2. J.H. Williams III

Having already established himself as one of today’s most talented and highly praised comic book artists in the industry, J. H. Williams III has been relentlessly adding to his award-winning, and illustrious, repertoire with critically acclaimed titles such as “Batwoman” and now, Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman: Overture”. For the better part of 2013, he had continued making waves on the shelves with what was, arguably, the most artistically sound series on the market — referring to “Batwoman”, of course — before sadly deciding to detach himself from the book due to creative/editorial differences in October. Nevertheless, his brilliant work reaped nominations for this year’s Eisner and GLAAD Media Awards for “Best Cover Artist” and “Outstanding Comic Book”, respectfully.

With an exceptional knack for visual storytelling that lends itself to any genre of titles, Williams never seems to delivers anything less than excellence. More often than not, people will expectedly get lost in his beautifully envisioned panels of eccentric and unconventionally laid out artwork, because his mastery of his craft is just that bloody good. It’s no wonder an artist of his caliber was sought out by the incomparable Neil Gaiman, to illustratively helm one of the most iconic comic book series this era has ever seen. There’s no doubt that J.H. Williams III will continue to be one of the most sought out comic book artists in the New Year.

1. Menton3

With appreciative recognition and glowing acclamation that continues to burn in our unworthy souls, Bloody-Disgusting is thrilled to announce this year’s pick for Comic Book Artist of 2013: the unmatchable Menton3! The amount of love the community has for this humble czar of horror art and prose is undeniably expected, given the transcendent—and sublimely transformative—artwork he’s been gracing the public with.

2013 was a marvellously productive year for Menton3, with the released of critically acclaimed titles like “Lust” with Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith, “Transfusion” with Steve Niles, and his current solo project, “The Memory Collectors”. All visually stunning, all painted masterpieces. There’s just something about his artwork that produces such a slow-burning, visual experience when taking his artistry in. It’s like every page needs to be breathed in and worshipped reverently, because what he’s offering is more than just panels in a comic book. It’s a delicately intimate relationship between you and the artist, and that’s something extraordinary.

Reflecting on 2013, it’s clear that we we are living in a new golden age of comics. Not only is the sheer amount of books being published overwhelming, but the quality has reached new heights. Regardless of genre, creators continue to explore the medium in new, innovative ways, and I wonder if 2013 is only the start of something much bigger.

Due to the amount of worthy titles being put out on a regular basis, narrowing my selection down to ten was nearly an exercise in futility. I finally put my list together and what you find is a melting pot of comic book culture, covering everything from the Big Two to indie publishers to webcomics.

Lonmonster (Best) | Jimbus_Christ (Best Debut Issues) | Jorge Solis (Best) | Shadow Jayd (Best Covers) | GreenBasterd (Best) | Brady (Best OGNs/Ongoings) | Bree Ogden (Best Kills)

LONMONSTER’S TOP 10 COMICS OF 2013
10. Haunter (Study Group)

I had no idea who Sam Alden was a few months ago, and now he is near the top of my creators-to-watch list. “Haunter” is gorgeously crafted silent webcomic that fuses elements of fantasy, horror, and adventure. The vibrant coloring combined with the smooth flowing narrative creates the sense the monster is chasing you, making for one of the most re-readable comics of the year.

Read it here.

9. The Shadow out of Time (Selfmadehero)

I’m a sucker for anything Lovecraft related, and I.N.J. Culbard is a master at adapting the master of horror’s adjective-laden prose into comic book form. “The Shadows out of Time” is perhaps one of Lovecraft’s most eccentric stories and Culbard brings it to life with a multitude of surreal and dark imagery. It’s an impressive adaptation, even with some details left out. This is a must read for Lovecraft fans.

8. Thor: God of Thunder (Marvel)

Thor has always been a hero that demands epic storytelling, and what could be more epic than three Thors (past, present, and future) duking it out against the brutal and unwavering God Killer. Although Esad Ribic is off the book now, he captured the gloom of the story perfectly, adding to the horror of the first few arcs. I feared the book would decline after such a stellar “God Killer” storyline, but Aaron continued the dark tone by introducing Malekith and his sinister plans for Genocide. Jason Aaron writing has the God of Thunder at the top of my reading pile every month.

7. Hellboy in Hell (Dark Horse)

Hellboy was on hiatus for a while, and, though he’s not back in the land of the living, it’s a welcomed return that means his death will have a true lasting effect on the series. The book also marks Mike Mignola’s long awaited return to interior art and it’s some of his best work ever. Mignola has one of the most distinctive and beloved styles in the history of comics. When you see a Mignola page, you know it is his in an instant and that has always set “Hellboy” above the rest. “Hellboy in Hell” is simply a great comic.

6. Incidents in the Night: Volume 1 (Uncivilized Books)

A metafictional mystery that investigates the relationship betweens characters and the work of art itself, David B.’s “Incidents in the Night: Volume 1” is a terrific post-modern tale. Although it has been out for quite a while in France it was just translated to English this year. It’s a surreal film-noir style story about a serious collector who sets out to find a specific journal that brings him into a world of dreams, and away from the angel of death. It’s has nightmarish, yet tempting environment that completely sucks you in.

5. Trillium (Vertigo)

Jeff Lemire’s creator owned work has always pushed the boundaries of the medium with his almost-naïve art style and unconventional panel layouts. “Trillium” thrusts mainstream comics to a new level, using experimental issue designs that match the content of the book. He’s one of the only creators working for the Big Two who experiments with the medium, and for that alone he deserves all the praise he gets. “Trillium” is thrilling sci-fi adventure with a heart that showcases Lemire’s command over his art.

4. Five Ghosts (Image)

What many people don’t take the time to understand is that comics are simply a different form of storytelling, and like film or literature, it has its advantages and disadvantages. “Five Ghosts” is the kind of story that could only be told in comic books. The creators take full advantage of the medium, utilizing sequential art to its fullest. While I imagine the book might be optioned for a film deal in the near future, no big screen adaptation will come close to what the book offers in comic form. “Five Ghosts” is a gorgeous pulpy adventure that smashes genres together with poise and confidence.

3. The Wake (Vertigo)

Scott Snyder may be churning out some of the hottest superhero titles, but his roots will forever remain in horror. “The Wake” pulls from a plethora of deep-sea legends, drawing inspiration from the likes of H.P. Lovecraft and Jules Verne. The ocean is a terrifying, enigmatic abyss that we know so little about, and Snyder is able to tap into that fear of the unknown with his adept writing. For a story that mostly takes place in a small, claustrophobic, Alien-esque submarine, it is so massive in scope that you can feel the importance of the book with every issue. “The Wake” is a master class in horror storytelling.

2. Out of Skin (emcarroll.com)

There is no genre more overrun with bankrupt imagery than horror. It’s increasingly difficult to scare or shock readers with imagery alone, yet somehow Emily Carroll manages to do it on a consistent basis. “Out of Skin” in a simple and profound story, and it’s the simplicity that makes it utterly disturbing. It’s beautiful, brazen, and original horror. “Out of Skin” proves that Emily Carroll is one of the most cerebral minds working in horror comics right now.

Read it here.

1. LUST (44FLOOD)

44FLOOD continues push the frontier of sequential art. “LUST” is as much a provocative story as it a piece of art. From the minds of menton3, Ben Templesmith, and Steve Niles, “LUST” explores human desires, their alluring nature, and their precarious affects on the mind. This is a comic that asks important questions about human existence and never shies away from the truth, and that is where the real horror comes from. It is superlative work that bleeds with passion, dread, and brilliance.

Honorable Mentions:
There are a few books that I just loved later in 2013, but I thought it unfair to put them in a best of the year list when only two issues have been released. Those books are “Afterlife with Archie” and “Drumhellar”. Kurtis J. Wiebe’s unique party/fantasy mashup “Rat Queens” also deserves a mention. You need to be reading those titles heading into 2014.

Another stellar title is “Ballistic” from Black Mask Studios. They are among the top three publishers of the year in my opinion, unfortunately I’m a bit behind on their titles.

Lastly is the absolute gem that is Abby Howard’s “The Last Halloween” (read it here). It’s hilarious and morbid in the best way.

A debut issue is a difficult conundrum. How do you introduce your characters, their motivations, and the larger world around them in an interesting and dynamic way?

Often first issues can be clunky and sometimes hard to read, only to morph into incredible series down the line. However, this year there were ten books that killed it right out of the gate. They are tight, incredible debuts filled with action, intrigue, and dynamic worlds. Each of them is distinctly different, but share one common thread: they are a hell of a lot of fun to read.

So here are the ten best debuts of the year in comics. These first issues will own you like nothing else, and have you committing to the series as if your life depended on it. If you missed any of them, get out to your local shop and pick them up right now. You won’t be disappointed.

Lonmonster (Best) | Jimbus_Christ (Best Debut Issues) | Jorge Solis (Best) | Shadow Jayd (Best Covers) | GreenBasterd (Best) | Brady (Best OGNs/Ongoings) | Bree Ogden (Best Kills)

JIMBUS_CHRIST’S TOP TEN DEBUT ISSUES OF 2013
10. Black Science (Image Comics)

Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera pull you into a world of anarchistic science without remorse. Black Science is the story of a dimension-hopping hero has only just begun but the incredible detail in the art, and the insanely fast paced script will capture anyone who opens the book. This debut issue makes you believe that this series has limitless potential.

9. The Memory Collectors (IDW)

Menton3 likes to push the limits of conventional comic books. This book is a blend of prose, comic book dialogue, and beautifully painted panels. The world is depicted with an alluring ruin that will burrow into your skull and gestate into something haunting. The story is told with a casual confidence that won’t let you go.

8. Trillium (Vertigo)

Jeff Lemire is no stranger to an incredible story. So it should come as no surprise that Trillium is a riveting debut issue. The script is super tight. The paneling is unlike anything else you’ll find in comics, and the structure of the narrative is a departure from the norm. The entire thing culminates in the middle, creating a beautiful and rousing experience from start to second finish.

7. Drumhellar (Image Comics)

Riley Rossmo and Alex Link throw you head first into the rural surreal. Steeped in mystery, weirdness, and incredible artwork Drumhellar will have you scratching your head… in a good way. The uncanny is all too common here, and it’s an insane amount of fun to get lost in.

6. Buzzkill (Dark Horse Comics)

How do you tell a story about a superhero that derives their power from drug and alcohol abuse? You steep it in the real world issues associated with the addiction and bring it to life with Geoff Shaw’s raw sketchy art. Donny Cates’ writing is razor sharp and his understanding of the larger implications of his themes makes the book both entertaining and thought provoking.

5. Sheltered (Image Comics)

Ed Brisson and Johnnie Christmas create an environment steeped in paranoia, and isolation. The conflict created in this debut issue will cause readers to theorize why the characters are acting the way they are, what are they so scared of, and who is in the right? It all boils over to a shocking twist that will compel you to read on.

4. Five Ghosts (Image Comics)

Frank Barberie and Chris Mooneyham don’t waste any time with their debut of Five Ghosts. Instead they throw the reader into the deep end and raise a series of interesting and alluring questions amidst the backdrop of an incredible adventure. The characterization is spot on. Fabian Grey is endearing and entertaining. There is never a dull moment, and the fun only continues with subsequent issues.

3. Sex Criminals (Image Comics)

Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky spin an original tale drowning in sexuality. What may seem disingenuous at first is actually pretty heartfelt. The book is a hilarious romp through teenage sexual discovery and is accompanied by tremendous paneling and art. A smile won’t leave your face until you finish the last page.

2. Ghosted (Image Comics)

Joshua Williamson sets himself up for an impossible task: introduce the conventions of a heist in one issue of a comic. He succeeds with flying colors, and entrenches the entire thing in horror. The result is a thoroughly refreshing take on the crime genre that is brought to life by Goran Sudzuka’s visceral art that never backs down. Plus it ends with one hell of a last page.

1. Ballistic (Blackmask Studios)

Adam Egypt Mortimer and Darick Robertson’s Ballistic blew me away this year. I’ve read the debut issue too many times to count, and I learn new things with every read. This is a deep book, which has an overwhelming amount to offer. It’s also filled with razor sharp dialogue. The story is insanely original and well thought out. Robertson’s art is unparalleled in its mastery. If you missed this book, do yourself a favor and get it immediately. It’s a Cronenbergian love letter to the intellectual science fiction of the past and its damn near perfect.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:
– Liberator (Black Mask Studios)
– The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (Dark Horse Comics)
– Grindhouse: Doors Open At Midnight (Dark Horse Comics)

December has just about reached completion, which means it’s time to take a look back at the best this year had to offer in comic book cover art. If there was ever an industry where judging a book by its cover was considered perfectly acceptable and often times encouraged, it’s most definitely this one (though still unfortunate). After meticulously perusing through an obscene amount of solicitations, from a multitude of publishing companies, over these past 12 months, I’ve managed to compile my Top 10 List of the Best Comic Book Covers of 2013. What are yours?

Lonmonster (Best) | Jimbus_Christ (Best) | Jorge Solis (Best) | Shadow Jayd (Best Covers) | GreenBasterd (Best) | Brady (Best OGNs/Ongoings) | Bree Ogden (Best Kills)

SHADOWJAYD’S BEST COMIC COVERS OF 2013
10. Afterlife With Archie #1 (Francesco Francavilla)

Admittedly, Francesco Francavilla’s cover for Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s “Afterlife With Archie” wasn’t even an original contender on this list. But the more I looked at his work, his stylistically dark and visually iconic style of art just reeled me into its clutches. Taking on such a beloved franchise from pop culture, and seamlessly zombiefying the universe with no reservations or restrictions, is pretty damn commendable.

9. Saga #13 (Fiona Staples)

Fiona Staples has been killing it on Brian K. Vaughan’s “Saga”, offering her own brand of stylistically distinguished artistry to accompany the writer’s fantastic script. Her lines are crisp and clear, and her creative vision shines through the characters she brings to life. This particular piece of work fought its way onto my list for arguably being the most recognizable cover to come out this year.

8. Revival #16 (Jenny Frison)

As a flourishing cover artist, Jenny Frison always seems to deliver beautiful artwork, but her contributions on Tim Seeley and Mike Norton’s “Revival” are nothing short of stunning. Her covers never cease to grab my attention, but this one wins my heart for its subtle tones and beautifully soft colouring techniques. She’s mastered the human form, which is rendered gorgeously onto the page.

7. Batwoman #23 (J.H. Williams, III)

J.H. Williams, III is one of my all-time favourite comic book artists currently working in the industry, so it’s no surprise that this is the first of two works included in my year-end list. His style is so perfectly his own, and adapts well to any title he’s working on. He’s dished out some magnificent covers for “Batwoman” over the years, but this remains my favourite for his use of excessive reds and his flawless depiction of Kate’s drug trip.

6. R.I.P.D.: City of the Damned #3 (Dave Wilkins)

This choice even surprised me, but there’s no denying Dave Wilkins’ talents when he can produce such beautifully detailed, and faultlessly coloured pieces of work like this cover for Peter Lenkov and Jeremy Barlow’s “R.I.P.D.: City of the Damned” #3. I had the pleasure of reviewing this series earlier this year, and this cover has stayed with me since. Planning on getting it framed!

5. LUST (Ben Templesmith)

44FLOOD’s “LUST” is a fantastic Kickstarter success story from creative geniuses Steve Niles, Ben Templesmith, and Menton3. It was an expectedly huge hit in 2013, so Templesmith’s cover for his contributing story penned by Niles was an easy pick for this list. His recognizable style of art is so distinctively dark, gritty, and perfect for the type of mood the book effectively evokes. His use of warm, ethereal, muted colours taken from a small palette of browns, lets the subtle hints of illustrated red blood pop within the piece, and alludes to the kind of story that’s about to be told.

4. Batgirl #24 (Alex Garner)

Alex Garner’s work in the comics industry is out of this world good, and there’s no amount of complimentary adjectives in the universe that can effectively describe the level of talent this man possesses. It was almost impossible to choose between all of his covers for Gail Simone’s “Batgirl” but issue #24 came out on top. The powerful image of Barbara holding her boyfriend Ricky after a brutal confrontation with Commissioner Gordon is so impeccably illustrated by Garner. The fact that he even managed to depict the unadulterated anger, disgust, and resentment on Barbara’s face so perfectly is a huge contributing factor as to why this piece was chosen.

3. Crawl To Me (Menton3)

Menton3 is beloved here at Bloody-Disgusting, and as one of the most popularly relevant horror artists currently working in the industry, an obvious pick for this year’s list. I had some reservations about this specific title, as it was released in 2011, but since the “Crawl To Me” Deluxe Limited Edition came out this year with a revamped cover, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to feature it on my list. It’s a fantastically horrifying, and visually hair-raising piece of art that makes me want to scream right along with it.

2. The Sandman: Overture #1 (J.H. Williams, III)

I was embarrassingly close to overlooking this stunning cover for Neil Gaiman’s “The Sandman: Overture” #1 but was thankfully reminded of its existence by the wonderful — and stubbornly adamant — Lonmonster. Having already gushed about J.H. Williams’ artistic talent earlier, there’s not much left to say, but his psychedelic use of colours, and his whimsically flowing illustrative strokes were a huge selling point for me.

1. Miniature Jesus #3 (Ted McKeever)

My choice for The Best Comic Book Cover of 2013 goes to Ted McKeever and his incredibly personal work on “Miniature Jesus” #3! The captivating image depicts rabid animals protruding out of series protagonist, Chomsky’s head, and it’s so visually stunning and perfectly telling of the character’s personal journey as a struggling, hallucinating alcoholic in this particular series. His style is bold, and his lines are strong and distinctive. The fact that it effectively establishes itself as a simplistically minimalistic form of realism with obvious surrealist themes is bizarrely cool. This specific piece of art is the first thing my mind remembers when thinking about covers, and that’s exactly why it’s my top choice of this year.

Menton3’s insightfully dark and visually stunning book “The Memory Collectors” returns this week, presenting a more intimate and philosophically reflective exploration of consciousness and perceived reality. With a continued mix of stylistically distinguished illustrations and enlightened prose, Menton3 delivers another unconventional and captivating installment that rivals the series debut.

WRITTEN BY: Menton3, Ben Murphy
ART BY: Menton3, Ben Templesmith
PUBLISHER: IDW Publishing
PRICE: $3.99
RELEASE: December 11, 2013

“The Memory Collectors” #2 continues with Magdalena, Edith, and Beatrice, as they find themselves battling against relentless attacks from an obscene amount of memory collectors, all of whom are just pieces to a much larger — and more dangerous — demon puzzle. The mystery only deepens as they journey further into confounding chaos to confront an enemy unlike anything they have ever seen or faced before. The choices they make will ultimately set-forth a series of events that will have the hunters questioning everything they have ever known, and everything they have trained to be.

Much like Menton3’s previous works, “The Memory Collectors” calls for intensive effort and attention from the reader, which ultimately allows for a greater, and more engaging experience overall. The narrative’s fascinating discourse on the book’s prominent themes, and the visually subversive presentation style of the creator’s intriguingly original take on the horror genre, not only puts to paper the inner-workings of Menton3’s mind, but demonstrates the level to which he respects and believes in his readers’ intelligence and understanding.

Opening with a compellingly telling anecdote derived from Norse mythology about Odin’s ravens, Huginn and Muninn, Book Two resumes its focus on the significant examination of thought and memory — what each bird represents. More than a symbolically relevant connotation about the characters themselves, birds like ravens and crows seem to be a recurring aspect of Menton3’s creations. They were previously featured in the debut issue of the series and can be stemmed back to Beatrice’s first appearance in “Monocyte” #1. Though it was David Stoupakis’ supplemental story within the book entitled “MONOCYTE: Chronicle of the Messenger” that featured a young Beatrice conversing with an ominous crow. Perhaps I’m reaching, but it’s always a delight to see familiar faces and themes being revisited in a variety of different projects, and this installment sees more of that with the return of a deliciously sinister character from Menton3’s “Monocyte” universe.

The artwork is as visually dynamic as it is remarkably dark and heavy. It’s clearly apparent that every stroke of his brush, and placement of devices, symbols, and diagrams derived from his studies of iconography and alchemy, is so specifically envisioned, and consciously meaningful. Menton3 is consistently reliable and accomplished when it comes to producing stellar pieces of art, and his artistic contributions to the book is a huge factor for its success. He dominates space and creates such powerfully evocative images that will rest in the reader’s memory long after they’ve experienced his work. And that’s something readers can always expect from a project as intimate as this one.

4.5/5 Skulls

Sexuality and comics are good buddies. Have been for uhm…ever. Not all comics. Obviously. But a lot of them. If you don’t believe me, go look at the breasts of every female character in any given superhero comic. Actually don’t, because that’s weird.

But recently, we’ve been seeing the psychosexual genre trending upward in comics and graphic novels— “psychosexual” being the psychological issues that come with sexuality. For example, although the sexually intimate relationship between The Joker and Harley Quinn is merely implied, we see Quinn deal with psychosexual breakdowns on the regular.

Now for the real coup. Psychosexual Horror is really starting to find its way into comics. When you add horror to the mix, the psycho part of psychosexual changes a bit. Emotions and sensibilities change. They are emotions and sensibilities you’d have when confronted with horror. So psychosexual horror of a very interesting mix — I’ll just say it, it’s essentially getting turned on by horror.

Over the last five years, there’ve been five psychosexual horror comics/graphic novels released that I highly suggest reading. This is my list of “must read” psychosexual horror comics/graphic novels… so pay attention, you fiends.

5. Black Hole by Charles Burns (Fantagraphics/Pantheon)

I’m actually cheating a bit on the timeline here because Black Hole was a series of comics that ran for nearly ten years ending in 2005. But in the last 5 years, Pantheon released a collected edition TPB of the series.

Black Hole centers around a group of Seattle teens who start contracting a new STD (which spreads like crazy because ALL THE SEX!!!). The mysterious STD begins to mutate these kids. Mutations that are very horror worthy. Like… a tail. Unsettling shit, for sure. In this particular example of psychosexual horror, the horror is a direct result of the sexuality. And the psycho comes after. It’s a phenomenal example of the genre as it can be taken literally or metaphorically. It deals with sex and its consequences, being an outsider, fear, and hatred. It’s a horror comic on a deeper level. An emotional level that is married to sexuality and loathing. Essentially, this is the body horror that Cronenberg helped to create throughout his early career.

4. The Furry Trap by Josh Simmons (Fantagraphics)

This is a collection of short horror comics that are insanely sexual, in a really crazy, read at your own risk, sort of way. This is skin-crawling horror, and it IS such a horror strictly because of the use of sex in the stories.

For example, one might not think that necrophilia would find its way into a mainstream graphic novel. But it does. And it’s so extreme (as with the rest of the stories in The Furry Trap) that you quite literally have to pick your jaw up off the floor. This type of psychosexual horror is heavy on the “psycho” and “horror”, using “sexual” as a means to an end. Read it though. Seriously. Then you can send me hate mail.

3. LUST by Steve Niles, Ben Templesmith, Menton3 (44Flood)

Lust is the type of psychosexual horror that is just so damn beautiful. It’s…well, it’s the opposite kind than The Furry Trap (and I mean that as no insult at all). I’ve been quoted before as saying this is a big, terrifying, sexual, wonderful, beautiful, hot lusty piece of horror art. It deals with lust (obviously) but also chastity–virtues and vices. But not in an after-school special sort of way, in a horrifying way. It showcases Niles’ signature horror writing. Something no one can deny as being in the top tier of horror comic writing. But almost more importantly, it utilizes the very different strengths of both Templesmith and Menton3 to augment Niles’ horror, ultimately leaving you stunned and frozen with emotion. LUST is the literary fiction, the black tie gallery art of psychosexual horror.

2. Echoes by Joshua Fialkov and Rahsan Ekedal (Top Cow)

This is the type of comic series that you don’t want to think of as psychosexual horror (RE: my description above “getting turned on by horror”) and I’ll concede that this is not the type of psychosexual horror that will turn you on — hopefully. But it fits the bill in almost every way.

One psychotic to another — father and son — enjoy killing young girls and making dolls of their flesh and remains (like it or not, that’s a form of sexual fetish). The sexuality here comes in hints and innuendos. And yea, it’s creepy as hell. Not the type of sexual fetish that should work for the average person. But it’s there, side by side with a horror infused storyline of murder, mental illness, distrust in others and in yourself.

Echoes is a terrifying read, it will give you ALL THE EMOTIONS. As a good psychosexual horror should.

1. 5. TEOTFW by Charles Forsman (Fantagraphics)

TEOTFW utilizes simplicity and dread to overwhelm you with fear. It utilizes dark fetishes to overwhelm you with emotion. It’s a subtle yet very dark psychosexual horror that stays very true to the genre. The type that makes you wonder about your own darkest desires.

There is a lot of murder, a lot of self harm, a lot of sex, a lot of loneliness… and a lot of these four things happen on the same page. It combines to give you an eerie feeling of spaced out sexuality and lost mayhem. This dark psychosexual horror comic is so terrifying in its bold statements yet simplistic art. It will trip you out and make you question a few of your true emotions.

Honorable mentions:

Marvel’s illustrated Picture of Dorian Gray and DC’s Batman: Mad Love. Both of which are way more subtle than the five comics/graphic novels listed above, but are still beautifully fantastic psychosexual horror comics.

Farah Al-Hakkak (ShadowJayd) and Lonnie Nadler (Lonmonster) have returned with more weekly commentary for Visions of Horror, to showcase the best horror artists and artwork the comics industry has to offer. By profiling pieces that have made a profound impact in the comics world, The BD Comic Book Crew (as we are henceforth to be known) hopes to ignite a spark of well-deserved appreciation and respect for all the exceptionally talented comic book artists, both living and past.

This week, we’re excited to spotlight one of today’s most prolific and relevant horror artists, Menton J. Matthews III (most popularly known as menton3). Specifically, we will be discussing his unforgettable splash page from Tom Waltz’ “Silent Hill: Past Life” #4, which was nominated for a 2011 Horror Comic Award for “Scene of the Year”. Hit the jump to feast your eyes on the glorious art in question.

Having never been to art school, menton3 learned to paint from a 14th century book instead. He spent his time developing his style and trying different techniques before finally self-publishing his first comic, “Ars Memoria”, in 2009. Less than a year after its initial release, IDW Publishing sought him out to illustrate “Zombies vs Robots Aventure” in early 2010, effectively establishing a beautiful and creatively productive business relationship between the two, which continues today.

Continuing with IDW, menton3 paired up with Kasra Ghanbari to bring to life a story about the horrors of immortality with “Monocyte”. The books is as poetic as it is beautiful, but still manages to maintain a bleak and sombre tone. The book became a hit for its originality, for bringing something new to the world of comics, and for surpassing the idea of what it means to be a “horror” comic.

Much of menton3’s influence stems from his opinions on art and comic books as a medium. In 2012, menton3 started the art collective known as 44FLOOD, alongside Kasra Ghanbari, Ben Templesmith, and Nick Idell. Their goal is simple: to exercise their common beliefs on art, music, and beauty. To date they have more than successfully funded 3 projects on Kickstarter including “LUST” and two volumes of their anthology series, “TOME”. They make it clear that these are not comic books in the traditional sense, but books that celebrate art and the life of the artist. Simply by flipping through the pages of the beast of a book that is TOME, it’s clear that 44FLOOD is pushing the boundaries.

While menton3 dabbles in water colour, and produces digital paintings when it’s called for, the majority of the comic books he makes are oil painted. It’s blatantly obvious that he puts his entire being into creating his pieces, as he even makes the paints that he uses, himself. His love for the process of creation very much shines through his fondness for the natural pigments mixed into his paints. For him, the idea of using natural minerals of the earth to externalize and express the interior — in the process of successfully producing an image — is something he really takes to; going as far as to poignantly likening it to “jewellery that’s mashed together to make a picture.”

Though it would have been an obvious decision to feature one of his fantastic oil painting, BD has chosen to spotlight a piece created entirely in Photoshop. While people may have their reservations about the digital age of comic book art, this specific work is just as visually stunning, and extremely impactful, as anything else he’s done. Moreover, this splash page from “Silent Hill: Past Life” presents his distinguishable style perfectly, highlights his interest in iconography and symbology, and showcases his affinity for “Diagrams” as a type of language to convey something specific in his images.

The digital painting below depicts the award nominated birth scene from ‘Past Life’, that’s an epically horrific, though beautifully rendered, example of menton3’s knack for visual storytelling. The fantastically illustrated pregnant woman in this image is the doomed Esther Munroe, who goes into premature labour. Unfortunately, the only midwife available is the deliciously creepy Cherokee woman, Inola. He paints her in a way that’s stark and moody, and the stylistically sketchy undertones seen on her face add to the sinister personality of the character. The overlapping skeletal frames in Esther’s arms and head belong to the dead Awinita, who menton3 has superimposed over Esther in a visually compelling presentation of artistic talent. He effectively illustrates the merging of these two characters perfectly, and doesn’t shy away from illustrating the full scope of agony and horror on Esther’s screaming face.

Anyone who is interested in American Gothic horror should spend some time with “Silent Hill: Past Life” because menton3’s work on the interior pages is right up there with the best.

A look into his digital painting process:

menton3 is also a talented musician, performing under the name Saltillo, and his music is definitely worth a listen. For more, check out his official website.

44FLOOD and IDW are joining forces. This feels like it was only a matter of time knowing that all the guys behind 44FLOOD have worked with IDW extensively in the past. The partnership means that IDW will publish 44FLOOD’s upcoming projects, meaning distribution should run much smoother.

44FLOOD is an artist collective formed by formed by Kasra Ghanbari, Ben Templesmith, and menton3. If you haven’t checked out their work, you’re really missing out on some outstanding artistic ventures.

San Diego, CA (October 11, 2013) – The artist collective known as 44FLOOD has, in its short history, acquired a reputation for producing exemplary art books. Today, IDW Publishing has announced that going forward, 44FLOOD books will be joining the IDW family!

Based in Chicago, 44FLOOD was formed by Kasra Ghanbari, Ben Templesmith, and menton3. Together, 44FLOOD has produced the multi-media, star-studded anthology TOME, which was followed up with the supplemental hardcover collection EXPLICTUS EST LIBER, and the goal-smashing Kickstarter project LUST by Steve Niles, Ben Templesmith, and menton3.

Beginning immediately 44FLOOD will join IDW, who will publish many of the collective’s upcoming projects. “We’re proud and excited to be partnering with IDW Publishing to co-develop and distribute a number of our diverse projects,” said Kasra Ghanbari, CEO of 44FLOOD. “As creators, we’ve had a long relationship with IDW and have always admired their development of fantastic, original comic book series, as well as beautifully conceived art books. IDW is uniquely suited to work with us in commercializing the arts-driven projects we’ve developed and continue to create.”

“Obviously, we’ve known Menton, Kasra and Ben for a long time, and we’ve worked on great projects together already,” said Ted Adams, CEO & Publisher of IDW. “But it was obvious right away that with 44FLOOD, they were all taking it to the next level. These are artists at the top of their game, and we’re thrilled to be taking on their new material.”

Check IDW and 44FLOOD’s Facebook and Twitter for updates on new projects and announcements!

Menton3’s ‘The Memory Collectors’ is a stunning debut that defies the nature of conventional comic books. Instead it opts to tell a story with a blend of prose and beautiful painted panels. The book is chock full of original concepts explained with casual confidence that results in a deeply engaging origin story unlike any other.

WRITTEN BY: Menton3
ART BY: Menton3
PUBLISHER: IDW
PRICE: $3.99
RELEASE: October 9, 2013

Beatrice, Edith, and Magdelena live in an enlightened world. They are aware of the horrors that walk among us and defend the world from them. The rest of us are merely cattle, lead to believe we are free under the guise of society.

Edith walks us through the enlightened world. She teaches us how to see things for what they really are. She spots what looks to be a man, but explains he is a beast. Menton3’s fantastic use of voiceover narration builds his world within the first few pages. Immediately we’re treated to a humorous exchange between Edith and her attacker on the history of high heels.

The art is simply stunning. The feeling of dread is unparalleled as Edith stands before her attacker. There is wispy sense to the creature as his blackness dissipates over him. The confrontation itself is depicted in stark white contrast. It allows the action to take center stage and truly stand out for the rest of the page. It’s remarkably effective and deceptively simple.

The final pages of the confrontation are stunning. The beautiful work by Menton3 on full display by the end. Edith vanquishes the creature in grand fashion and the book allows us to revel in the moment.

After the initial conflict we take a step back to develop the characters. Here Menton3 treats us to a prose explanation of how Edith came to be the woman we just saw. It’s incredible because it allows for a great deal more explanation that the typical book. It does slow down the pacing, but at the same time the rest of the pages are wonderfully light on dialogue and explanation. The art is allowed to speak for itself.

By the end of the book we have a unique perspective. Menton3 makes sure you understand everything within this world. With just enough explanation of our character’s pasts, combined with enlightenment about the nature of memory collectors, everything about the overarching conflict of the book is put into place.

The result is a fantastically paced story that broods in darkness. “The Memory Collectors” has a certain self-awareness. It allows our imaginations to take hold. You’ll envision these women vanquishing horrors every time you gaze into a dark alley. It helps that Menton3 solidifies this by allowing his characters to hunt at comic conventions. It’s the type of genius move that will put every cosplay into question this weekend at NYCC.

This debut issue shouldn’t be missed. It’s a deadly concoction of engaging characters in an enlightened and dangerous world. The entire thing is brought to life by breathtaking art. “The Memory Collectors” will get under your skin, into your brain, and have you looking over your shoulder.

Rating 4.5/5 Skulls.

Come October, IDW will be releasing “The Memory Collectors”, an original 3-issue limited series written and illustrated by Menton3. Anyone who has followed Menton’s body of work knows that his illustrations are creamy and surreal, with a touch of realism that combines to make beautifully dark art.

Much like his work, Menton3 likes to keep this mysterious. His overwhelming passion for his projects has him locking up the artistic details until release, which always makes the payoff so grand.

We know little about the plot for “The Memory Collectors”, but what we have been told is enough to make us salivate. And now we have just a little bit more to salivate over. Menton was gracious enough to compile five bits of information, in what I like to call: “5 Things People May Not Expect From The Memory Collectors.”

WARNING: This information will only whet your appetite, leaving behind an intense longing to read the comic immediately. Symptoms include desire, anxious twitching, and grabby hands. So if you need to wait and read this article right before the release, completely understandable.

1) One thing that I am reluctant to talk about is I have a hope and desire to turn “The Memory Collectors” into an ongoing series.

2) In Issue #2, Ben Templesmith will be doing a 6 -page story written by Ben Murphy. It is an extension of the main story line, it is finished, it looks absolutely phenomenal and I cannot wait for people to see it.

3) In issue #3, one of my great friends, Jason Mote is writing a story that Chris Mitten will be doing the illustrations for. The story definitely adds to the world and I am very excited about it and I’m very excited to have Chris Mitten in the book as well.

4) The character Beatrice, not only in “The Memory Collectors”, but also in “Monocyte”, is based off my wife. People always look at me and say “women do not actually look like that “ I respond, “ actually, that’s how my wife looks.”

5) The basis behind the story of “The Memory Collectors” has to do with a childhood experience I had that has bothered me most of my life and that’s about as far as I am willing to go into it.

The Memory Collectors releases October 2013.

“LUST” is a provocative new book from 44FLOOD. Further diversifying the term “comic book” are Steve Niles, Ben Templesmith, and Menton3 telling a prose story with accompanying images. Upon casual observation, it is clear that “LUST” is more than your average comic. It defies the term, but adds to it at the same time. The haunting visuals hang with the dreadfully dark stories to make for one incredible reading experience.

WRITTEN BY: Steve Niles
ART BY: Ben Templesmith & menton3
PUBLISHER: 44FLOOD

The book has two beautiful covers. One of the covers is from Ben Templesmith and the other by menton3. Each of them characterizes the story behind it in such an evocative way. Templesmith’s warm earth tones and murky blood suggest the gore that waits. Menton3’s cover gives a sense of dread with greys, dark blacks, and blue.

Both stories beyond their respective covers are written by Steve Niles of “30 days of Night” fame. They are unique but thematically similar tales of virtue and vice. The grim tone is established from the get go. With the most intimate and disgusting tale being that of a junkie, brought to life by Templesmith.

Niles focuses on a group of drug dealers. A deal has gone wrong and Cam is responsible for cleaning it up. This story has such an unrelenting sense of lust. Every character is defined by their desires. These are not good people, and the things they desire are far from virtuous.

The story is creepy and foreboding. Cam’s ordeal is described in cringe-worthy detail. The prose evokes a sense of dread that cannot be channeled any other way. We experience the horrible things that Cam goes through in intimate first person detail.

After Niles has creeped so far under your skin, he takes things a step further. The story concludes in an agonizing fashion that leaves the reader with a certain sense of lust. It makes you think of what you want more than anything, and what would happen if it consumed you.

Ben Templesmith’s art is like the best pages of the necronomicon. So beautifully terrifying that you cannot look away. The full-page spreads evoke a sense of whimsy in regards to the human form. Pages ooze with sexuality, only to spin the sexuality on its head with horrifying imagery. What results is a fully immersive experience that drags you through the underbelly of drug culture.

Any page from this book could own the most avid art fan for several hours. The art and the story creep together like a snake about to strike. It coils around you and burrows into your skull until you are unable to do anything but accept its embrace.

Flipping over the book will take you to menton3’s half. Here Niles weaves the story of Dan. A man reeling from his recent loss of everything: his family, his home, and his initiative. Dan floats through his life without purpose. Consumed with questions, he is lost.

The story rolls on with Dan’s fascination of his environment. He attempts to paint, but is whisked away by just about everything around him. He is haunted by images of hurt women, who have their own desires.

Menton3’s incredible paintings tease the reader as the story progresses. The dark tones give a unique sense of foreboding. A different haunting woman is playfully painted in a seductive pose on every page. Menton3 makes sure to disrupt these images with demonic figures looming in darkness. The women are seductive, and timeless. Every page brings a more intimate woman than the last. Niles story compliments the art. The terrifying verses are accompanied and sometimes embodied by the demonic figures on the page.

Menton3 plays a game of peek-a-boo with your psyche. Balancing the seductive and playful side of women with the darkness that they can create. Niles story and menton3’s art hit a high point at the same time. Throwing the reader into an abyss of demonic women. Each page plays with one beside it, and the intimacy created by the art will create an experience that will devour you.

“LUST” defies conventional criticism and here I am giving it. The entire book is such a work of art that it really must be held in your hands to understand the true gravity of its contents. The exploration of vice and virtue has never quite been done like this, and may never be again. In essence “LUST” will terrify you, thrill you, and change you. I’ve read it four times, and I can’t wait to dive in again.

Do yourself a favor and pick this book up. It is everything that you could ever want, and you need to ask yourself: how hard are you willing to work to get everything you could ever want? How badly do you lust for this book? And is that a good thing?

On top of his insanely ambitious projects with 44FLOOD, menton3 is putting out a new series at IDW this October titled “The Memory Collectors”. The three-issue miniseries, written and illustrated by menton3, follows a group heroines as they come to learn that humans are being targeted by demons who want to steal their memories. The heroines must try to stave off the demons while simultaneously dealing with a bizarre new reality. Given his work on books like “TOME”, “Lust”, and “Monocyte”, put this on your list, if not for the art alone.

Official Press Release:

San Diego, CA (July 16, 2013) – After the twisted journey of surprise indie-hit Monocyte, menton3 is ready to take a new dark path into a world that is not what it seems. The truth will be revealed this October in his newest project, The Memory Collectors.

This three-issue limited series with both story and art by menton3, follows a group of unexpected heroines as they uncover the terrifying revelation that humans have become unwillingly harvested by demonic entities for their memories. Undaunted, the group decides to fight back against their unseen enemies in this desolate new reality.

“It’s always an honor to work with IDW,” says menton3. “I feel so incredibly lucky to have their help to put out a very different kind of story from me. Working on The Memory Collectors reminded me of why I wanted to make comics.”

“Menton’s blend of fine art and storytelling produce something completely unique,” said series editor Denton J. Tipton, “He’s a pleasure to work with, and every new page he turns in finds a new way to surprise me.”

His work has appeared across IDW’s line with covers for Infestation: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Mars Attacks, X-Files and more. His recent, hugely successful Kickstarter campaign for the book Lust with Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith, easily exceeded its financial goal. menton3’s other recent creator-owned venture with Steve Niles, Transfusion, was both a critical and commercial success.

The Memory Collectors will be the third creator-owned project from menton3 at IDW and looks to be as dark—and captivating—as the others.

Last year, 44 FLOOD, a new company started by Ben Templesmith, menton3, Kasra Ghanbari, and Nick Idell, launched a Kickstarter campaign for their first annual edition of their anthology series “TOME”. The first volume focused on the theme of vampirism and was crowd funded in under 24 hours. The product was a beast of an art book featuring work from some of the best artists in the world. It truly is a magnificent sight to behold and it is a testament of the passion these guys put into their projects.

The gang at 44 FLOOD has just launched the Kickstarter for “TOME 2: MELANCHOLIA”, and it’s already well on it’s way to being successfully funded. The book is planned to be 12×18″ and 200 pages with an inserted music CD. The list of artists involved is just insane (see it on their campaign page). As always, the backing options are wicked including original artwork and prints from the artists involved.

From the Kickstarter:

TOME is a biennial anthology in an oversized format showcasing world-class and emerging artists from diverse disciplines as they explore a single, esoteric theme. TOME is made by artists with artists for the artist within us all.

The book is a massive 12×18″ and 200 pages with an inserted music CD! This large format lets the art be presented and experienced in a way that would be almost impossible outside of standing in front of the original work itself.

For TOME Volume 2, we will focus on the theme of MELANCHOLIA, the condition more akin to the alchemical phases the psyche passes through for our individuation and evolution…aka NOT depression or mourning, but something far more essential and ultimately beneficial to us all. The artist is born into a state of inspired MELANCHOLIA and exists within it. They bring back their experiences to us, providing those images, symbols, and light posts for our collective benefit, so that we may learn and not have to go through what it is that they have gone through. Our belief is that this influences the collective in a deeply meaningful and critical way, that this determines a society and culture’s ultimate health, well-being, growth, and relevance.

Featured Artists in TOME 2 will each have 6-8 pages to present to us their “Hero’s Journey” taken on our collective behalf. The works presented in TOME 2 will be a meticulous selection of pieces by artists leading up to a current piece or pieces that they’re working on, completing a compressed arc in an attempt to at least in part represent their individual journey, discoveries, and resolutions to date.

And as part of each Featured Artist’s contribution, they’ll have an interview or discussion with another artist to continue the articulation of their artistic exploration as related to the theme.

Our goal at 44FLOOD is to get you involved through this Kickstarter campaign to help make TOME 2 a reality, just like you did so incredibly with TOME Volume 1! We’re asking for your support through pre-ordering TOME 2 and it’s companion book EXPLICITUS EST LIBER 2 at a big discount to their retail price, as well as purchasing the offered art and prints, selecting from the special rewards offered, or even making a donation.

Thank you so much for your time, consideration, and support!

It’s usually difficult to buy comic book issues every month. Most likely, I’ll wait till the issues are collected and buy the trade paperback. It’s easier for me to see how the story arc comes full circle. But often, the best comics are the ones I buy in single issues and still get the trade paperback as well. Here is my list of the best trade paperbacks to come out of 2012.

Lonmonster’ List | Big J’s List | Jorge Solis’s List | Melissa Grey’s List | Your Friendly Neighbourhood Brady’s List | George Shunick’s List

JORGE SOLIS’S TOP 10 COMICS OF 2012

10. Green Wake Vol. 2: Lost Children (Image Comics)

Though the series ended too soon, Kurtis J. Wiebe delivers a satisfying finale to the mysterious town and inhabitants of Green Wake. Wiebe provides explanations on the history of Green Wake and his final thoughts on the series. Riley Rossmo offers unused covers and sketches of a few panels.

9. Witchblade: Rebirth, Vol. 1: Unbalanced Pieces (Top Cow Productions)

During Top Cow’s Rebirth, Tim Seeley starts off with a fresh take, relocating Sara Pezzini, wielder of the Witchblade artifact, to the mean streets of Chicago. Artist Diego Bernard captures the snowy and icy weather, which represents Sara’s moody personality. Bernard includes a cover gallery in the bonus content.

8. Hoax Hunters Vol. 1: Murder, Death, and The Devil (Image Comics)

Michael Moreci and Steve Seeley play around with the reality TV concept, where paranormal investigators disprove actual supernatural events to the public. Artist Axel Medellin focuses on the atmosphere and character dynamics in his moody illustrations. This collection also features Issue #0, the back-up tales originally found in “Hack/Slash.”

7. Swamp Thing Vol. 1: Raise Them Bones (DC Comics)

Scott Snyder delivers a suspenseful origin tale as Dr. Alec Holland is called upon once again to become Swamp Thing. Artist Yanick Paquette delivers the gruesome imagery of The Rot and its zombie army. Paquette also offers sketches and early concepts of the cover layouts.

6. Rebel Blood (Image Comics)

Alex Link and Riley Rossmo craft an action-packed thriller about a young man, Chuck Neville, discovering the animals in the woods have turned into zombies. With no dialogue in the panels, Rossmo illustrates eerie and frightening sequences where Chuck is being chased by the infected animals. Rossmo provides early covers and concept art of the zombie animals.

5. Crawl To Me: Evil Edgar Edition (IDW Publishing)

Writer/artist Alan Robert delivers an intense psychological thriller about a married couple trapped in their house by a menacing evil spirit. The “Evil Edgar Edition” contains an introduction by comics legend Walt Simonson and a painted cover by Menton3.

4. American Vampire Vol. 4 HC (Vertigo Comics)

In “Death Race,” Scott Snyder introduces Travis Kidd, a young hunter with his own style of killing bloodsuckers. With a pair of wooden teeth, Kidd bites back and rips the throat of a vampire. Artist Rafael Albuquerque delivers a breathtaking car chase as Kidd and Skinner Sweet fight on top of his Thunderbird’s hood. Albuquerque provides a sketchbook containing character designs of Kidd and loosely drawn “American Vampire” covers.

3. The Strain Vol. 1 (Dark Horse Comics)

In this adaptation, David Lapham tightens the dialogue, focusing on the police procedural aspect as Ephraim and Nora, the disease detectives, investigate their case. Aimed at shock value, Mike Huddleston depicts the violent aftermath of the vampire attacks, where heads are squashed and brains pop out.. Also included, there is a foreword by ” The Strain” creators, Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan.

2. Monocyte – Black Label Menton3 Edition (IDW Publishing)

Kasra Ghanbari and Menton3 deliver a highly imaginative apocalypse with provocative and fashionable character designs. In Menton3’s artwork, primary colors are washed away, bringing only gray and black tones to the forefront. In this edition, Menton3 offers new end pages and a custom cloth cover.

1. Severed HC (Image Comics)

Scott Snyder and Scott Tuft deliver a heart-wrenching coming-of-age tale about a lost runaway searching for his missing father, while crossing paths with a demonic serial killer known as The Salesman. Attila Futaki recreates the look and feel of America in the 1900s with his beautifully-rendered illustrations. Readers are given an inside look at the artistic process as Futaki provides a cover gallery, character sketches, and photo references.

Honorable Mentions:
“Hellboy Vol. 12: The Storm And The Fury”, “The Darkness: Rebirth” Vol. 1, and “’68 Vol.1: Better Run Through The Jungle”.

George Pratt, Ben Templesmith, and Bill Sienkiewicz have all provided original pieces and signatures for their individual Black Label editions, all of which are also signed by the book’s co-creators, Kasra and menton3.

“We created MONOCYTE as a love letter to the medium and because it was the kind of book we wanted to see on the shelves,” said Kasra. “With IDW Limited, we had access to incredible production possibilities and direct input into every design element. What we ended up with is a true definitive edition that fully realizes the art and reading experience.”

If you read horror comics, you know the name Ben Templesmith. Over the past decade Templesmith has solidified his spot as one of the top horror artists in the game. After a brief two year hiatus, he returned to the comics industry this past year with renewed appetite and vision.

Recently, Ben Templesmith co-founded a company called 44FLOOD alongside Menton3, Kasra Ghanbari, and Nick Idell as a way to offer unique comic/art fusion books. Their first project, an annual anthology series called “TOME”, was launched through Kickstarter, reaching it’s goal of $18,400 in only a few hours. Over the past week, 44FLOOD has been teasing a new project called “LUST” through their facebook page that will reunite Ben Templesmith and Steve Niles (more details coming tomorrow). Templesmith sat down with Bloody-disgusting at Montreal Comiccon to discuss his return to the industry, his excitement for the future of 44FLOOD, his views on art, and plenty more.

BD: It seems a lot of the reason why you guys started 44FLOOD is as a means to represent artist by giving them the space to do what they want. Do you feel there’s been a misunderstanding of artists in comics in recent years?

Templesmith: Historically, there’s always been a lack of respect for artists in comics. I mean look at Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, they’re the prime example of that aspect of comics. One guy has a lot of publicity and promotion, and the other guy, in the mainstream nobody knows his name. But everyone knows Stan Lee. We live in the age of the writer, the story is key, but the look of it comes second. It’s interesting because Hollywood is the reverse pretty much, the stories are crap but the look is stunning.

When you deal with publishers sometimes art is seen as just a labor job, but I always pick up a comic because of the art first, only after do I really get into the story. That’s what we wanted to bring it back to with TOME. It’s kind of a brotherhood or sisterhood thing as well, it’s creativity and you have to give people room to breathe, and we’re thankful for the response so far.

BD: Did you feel there was a need for a platform for artists to have that room to breathe?
Templesmith: The main reason was to give a voice to projects we thought were cool, that we would do anyway, but something most publishers wouldn’t even contemplate doing. They wouldn’t see the investment to be worthwhile because of all the time and people involved. But let’s not pre-empt things, let’s wait til the book is out! So far, everyone seems very enthused.

My problem is most of my work is popular, it’s not superstardom, but it’s popular enough for me to make a living. Most of it is rarely in print so there are not hundreds of thousands of copies out there, but when there’s a new printing it generally sells out. I’ve been gone for two years from comics, so it’s amazing that I’m still invited to cons!

BD: Why did you come back to comics?

Templesmith: It’s in my blood. I got an email from Warren Ellis, and I was like I better let people know I’m not dead. When I came back to America, I stayed with Menton3 in Chicago and being in the studio with him, I started getting creative again and I started working on my comic in a while. So eventually, it was like, why not form our own company? We have the same ideas and ethos about creativity coming first. Obviously comics, is a business, and as always, business is business but it doesn’t have to be the same old same old. We want to bring it back to comics as a movement. The medium is not the industry but the industry is not the medium. Or something like that [laughs].

BD: You’ve mentioned before that you see art as ideas. How do you see ideas becoming art?

Templesmith: Well the reason people like art is because of the idea that went into it. You can draw an amazing lamp, but its still just a lamp, you need an idea to go with it.

BD: So how do ideas translate into art?

Templesmith: I try to come up with good ones, good stories. What I meant was that the world is run by corporations who pay to get new ideas. The idea is key. Whether it’s Disney, DC, Warner, Marvel, they have back catalogs of ideas that are worth millions. If you can come up with an idea, a good one, you don’t need the corporations. If you have the wherewithal to capitalize on it yourself, you can, use the Internet, or whatever. It all starts from one simple idea.

BD: So, its’ about having the thought and then working to get it out there, to communicate?

Templesmith: Executing the idea, that’s the hard part. But that’s where we want to help with 44FLOOD, helping artists get out there to the masses on behalf of that person rather than taking their idea and running with it under the company name.

BD: Is part of 44FLOOD focusing on helping artists who are not so well known to break in?

Templesmith: That’s the ultimate goal, to bring up new artists. With TOME, if it continues year after year, we really want the upcoming artists. It’s like, make it prestigious, make it a statement and then later down the line the money that comes in from that initial push will allow us to bring in the new artists. After volume one, we’ll really try to benefit all kinds of people. I think even with this volume we’ve got a pretty good mix.

BD: You have an insane list of contributors for this edition of TOME. How did that all happen?

Templesmith: Everyone knows everyone in the industry in comics, it s a bit incestuous because it’s a small industry. We tried to draw people in from other fields as well, so there are actually a lot of fine artists in this edition. There are so many artists out there who want to do comics but they don’t know how.

BD: You’re giving 3-5 pages to each artist for a story. How did you pick that number?

Templesmith: Well it just made sense. There is some jiggle room with it, some only have one page, but all fits with the layout of the book. Its not a status thing, just how it works design wise with 200 pages to play with.

BD: The theme is vampirism this year?

Templesmith: Right vampirism, not necessarily vampires! So like corporations, exploitation, power, anything feeding parasitically on something else, or traditional vampires. There will be a lot in there.

BD: That’s a touchy subject in pop culture these days and you seem to be averse to pop culture, the current trend of it at least.

Templesmith: I think anyone with taste is probably averse to it. We are not for the Twilight people. In the real world, they’re a lot of the lowest common denominator. Twilight is some type of Mormonism romance, strange thing. We’re not interested in that demographic. But there is a whole world of people not reading comics, we want to try and grab new people.

Current publishers fail because almost every person is a potential new reader. We don’t want the existing fans. We want the new ones. Twilight fans, no. But that’s okay; we’re not after them.

BD: This is the first project that 44 FLOOD is undertaking. So what else do you guys have planned?

Templesmith: We have various other art comic fusion projects, some straight comics in the works. We have a lot of plans and we’re just starting to get the going. We play it by ear, but we don’t want to lose focus, we don’t want to lose our core brand and appeal that we’ve worked so hard to build.

We are just trying to break even first, then become sustainable later. I don’t think we’ll become a huge publisher in the comic book sense. We’re not going for the mass market, our core is to produce art for real people who we connect with, and sell direct to them. The big market is a bit broken to us, so we are going beyond that, because if that collapses tomorrow, we’ll still be okay. We’re mostly about the actual artifacts of the books, making connections, getting out sketches and the art.

BD: Kickstarter was great to you guys, are you going to go back to it?

Templesmith: At least for one or two more then hopefully we’ll be able to do what we want with some funds we’ve made. Kickstarter is a valid tool for us, almost like a pre-order system, much like Diamond, but it’s got much less cost and more work because you mail the books out yourself. It’s a great system because it empowers creative people but at the same time the creator has to learn about printing and shipping and stuff. So we know that stuff and hope we can help other artists through 44FLOOD now. I’ve been in comics for 10 years now, I’m not old, but I’m still kind of a young pup. Menton came from nowhere over the past handful of years, and he’s going to be huge.

BD: He’s a great artist, I blush at the sight of his work.

Templesmith: [laughs] Yeah, we riff on each other’s work a lot, artistically without borrowing styles. We are still very different, but we have similarities which I think people can see. We did a collaboration for TOME, where we each took half of the page and I think that turned out well. It may not be the last time we do something along those lines.

BD: Is there anything else you want people to know about 44FLOOD?

Templesmith: We’re artists for artists. We’re not anti-writer, we like writers. We just want to try to do something different that nobody else has done yet. We don’t want to compete so much with other publishers, we just want to put things out there that are original and novel. The next step for me is to actually do the comics, to be involved in the process in a curative sense; this, I think, was always going to be the next move in my career.

Kasra Ghanbari and Menton3 have created a sprawling, terrifying world with Monocyte, and next week brings the grand finale to this wonderful mini-series. We’re obsessed with this book here at BD, and we cannot recommend it enough.

The series is set in the future, in a world devoid of life, save for two long feuding immortal races who have claimed the world as their own. The figure of Death calls upon his long forgotten necromancer, Monocyte, to put an end to immortality, and introduce death into the world once again. “Monocyte” is a grim and beautiful story unlike anything you’ve ever read before. The writing is poetic, and the artwork is simply breathtaking. You can see the details for the oversized collected edition below, as well as the preview for the final issue which hits shops May 16th, 2012 from IDW.

WRITTEN BY: Kasra Ghanbari and Menton3

Since the first issue, “Monocyte” has been a grim portrayal of the future of humanity, yet it is equally beautiful at the same time. Co-creators Menton3 and Kasra Ghanbari have developed an insane, vast, sprawling epic, and the four-issue mini-series, only offers a small glimpse into their dark world. The series follows the story of two feuding immortal races thousands of years in the future, and the slumbering necromancer, Monocyte, who has been awakened to introduce death to the world once again. With poetic dialogue and some of the best artwork in horror right now, “Monocyte” is like nothing else out there today.

The creative team took the time to sit down with BD and chat about their series from IDW Publishing. With the fourth installment set for release at the end of the month, the book has almost reached its conclusion. Kasra and Menton3 offer in-depth insight into the future of the series, the creative process as a whole, the fear of immortality, plus an exclusive announ Check out the interview after the break.

For people who don’t know what Monocyte is can you give us a brief introduction?

KG: For all intensive purposes, it’s set way in the future in a world void of life in every way except for these two long fighting immortal races that have governance over the world, and human slaves that they feed off of for as their source of immortality. Due to the lack of death, the figure of Death, Azrael, has become irrelevant and reduced into a physical form, which pisses him off. He sets up a plan and calls upon a long lost, and forgotten necromancer, Monocyte, who long ago had gone to sleep to approximate death. So Azrael summons him and sends him out to destroy the power sources of these two immortal races and to bing death and balance back to the world.

I was reading some previews interviews you’ve done and you mentioned that one thing you were trying to do was reverse roles of protagonists and antagonists. What made you want to reverse these roles?

M3: too many horrible things come out of what that people say are good, and too many wonderful things come out of things deem to be evil. One example is we have a church that is supposed to be good, which it then responsible for the Spanish Inquisition. I think thematically, storytelling wise, some of the stories I gravitate towards deal with the fact that there is no good or evil, per say. For me it was interesting to base a story around this concept. I come form the idea that I want to be doing something original to myself, and there aren’t enough people out there doing what they think is cool. So to me, the juxtaposition of good and evil was a good place to start a story.

So you have these two immortal races that have been fighting for thousands of years. One race is based more in alchemy and magic while the other is more technologically based, which makes this interesting dichotomy between the synthetic and the organic. What made you want to contrast the races so drastically.

M3: The reason I make music or any art is to externalize the internal, to a point where self-realization is a forgone conclusion. Art and music are a way of pushing out crazy shit inside my head and a means to communicate with myself. When Monocyte originally came to me as an idea, it came along with this subconscious stuff that dealt with the subject matter you see in the book. It was always just kind of there. I’m not trying to indict religion, the occult, or technology. It just seems to me that this is how the story would play out, so really it fed itself.

KG: As far as world building goes, we could justify, to a point , the basis of immortality being attainted by those methodologies. So we wanted it to be as real as possible when building this world, we wanted people now to look at it and dissect it and go deeper and infer a relevance to the story. Between magic and technology, we went through the actual functions by which immortality might be attained, and eventually we got to the point where we were more than satisfied that this was something that breathed life into the world in an unusual way.

M3: I have studied the occult and alchemy since I was a young child, and Kasra built a biotech company, so we both had a lot of information on these two subjects. So if we were going to do a book about immortality, this seemed to be the way in which somebody could do it, at least within the world of the story.

You’ve also mentioned that you wanted to get across the horror of immortality. Was this something you’ve always found terrifying?

M3: Yeah, when you see plastic flower the reason it’s not as beautiful is because it’s not mortal, but a natural flower, that’s not always going to be there. If you walked up to your every day person and offered them immortality, most people would probably say, “that sounds awesome”. This book is kind of an explanation of how horrible that would be. Imagine someone like George Bush never dies, and stays in power, that would be awful.

We’re kind of in a social media flux with vampires, and glorifying the aspect of how sexy it would be to live forever, but in actuality it would be horrible to see people you love die and not die, and have this egomanifestion continue and never change into anything else. To me that is horror. To me it was a joke growing up with my friends that it was hard to scare me, I would watch movies with them and they wouldn’t scare me. What happened in Nazi Germany with genocide and making death a number was horrifying, or on the other side of things, the notion of Britney Spears never dying is what scares me.

We’ve talked about the two immortal races quite a bit. And we didn’t see much of the humans until issue 3. So how do they figure into the whole war?

M3: The human in issue three is actually Monocyte, just a really long time ago. It is there that we start to unfold the story and tell you why everything has gone on, and to reveal who he is. We spoke about antagonists vs protagonists, and monocyte is for sure the hero but he’s like the anti anti anti hero. The humans become more relevant in issue #4, as they find themselves in this horrible world where nothing dies, and as the story progress they become more and more relevant.

KG: I always say that the humans are represented in a pretty profound way in every issue so far, which goes all the way back to negotiating with IDW where we asked for all 36 pages, because rather than infusing the human story arc within the story arc we wanted to lift it out and dedicate space to them at the back of each issue so that they were present in the main story. Then in issue 3 there is a thematic shift toward more humanistic points. With the unveiling of Monocyte’s backstory, and as the series concludes, and maybe continues, you will see that the entire story was always about the humans. All the other races are beautiful eye candy but they are just representations of the potential within humanity. Just because they are now immortal doesn’t mean they weren’t human at one point. So hopefully readers will see that the humans have been on display all along.

I think Issue #3 really brings that together, there were a lot of questions left unanswered, but it all gets pieced together in issue #3.

KG: thank you very much. We knew we wanted to shift back to the humans and we needed someone with the talent of George Pratt and his story in issue #3 to help us pull that off. We love what George did, he brought a sort of emotion to the humans that people can relate to. When readers look at the back-stories in issue #3, we hope people see a shift.

You have quite a few different creators doing these back-stories. How did they get involved

KG: When Menton and I were coming up with the structure of the book we thought it would be cool to take the human story out. So we were turned on by the idea of getting a bunch of our heroes and these incredible artists to do these stories, to see how they see the world we created. I tapped into a lot of my contacts from various aspects of my life, Menton as well, and strangely enough we hand picked them for the book and it all just seemed to fall in place, they were all so willing to help. The relationship has been different with each one, but all absolutely amazing in how it worked out. We have been profoundly blessed for these people to have come on board and lend us their work.

Going back to Monocyte the character. He’s pretty daunting looking guy, he’s very powerful, yet he has this strange existential beauty and he’s poetic in his speaking. What made you choose to make such a grim figure so beautiful?

KG: The character and the design came from Menton, then we built him up on paper together.

M3: I came up with the concept because I was commissioned to do a superhero painting, and I was super excited by it. I went back and read all these old comics I had as a kid, and I realized I placed a lot of information on this hero that wasn’t there at all, somehow through the fantasy of my mind. So I started thinking, well, maybe I should write down what I thought was there and what would be a cool superhero to me as an adult. Literally within about 15 minutes, the core was all there.

Design wise, to a large extent, I didn’t fiddle with it for long. I don’t want to sound New Agey, but I just meditate it and try to translate it into something that will make sense to other people. So the character just is what he is in my psyche, and I tried to manifest that in the physical world.

KG: When it comes to personality and how they function in the world, or how they would communicate this on a comic book page, there was a lot of debate between about their voices, their intent, motivations, and history. So with issue #1 we were trying to show readers a durationless world, which was a pretty daunting task so it came to this weird cadence, and weird floaty feeling, and the lack of words in relation to time. Thinking about these characters who have been alive for so long, they probably wouldn’t be how we speak now, it would likely be a but more esteemed. We both have a love of Shakespeare, but that wasn’t quite right, but we also loved Deadwood, so somewhere between those was the point we wanted to be at. These people don’t waste words, they speak in symbols, rather than how we are now as slaves of linear word construction. We don’t know if we pulled it off fully, but that’s what we are at least attempting to do.

The writing style is very different form any other work out there right now. You have all the superhero books, which I love, but the writing is fairly similar between them. With Monocyte you get these biblical phrasings and this 17th century speech.

KG: We got to rely on Menton’s art and his storytelling.

M3: Which probably made the book fail.

KG: [Laughs]. Well a lot of what I do to preview the book on social media is to do so without the words. By the time we deal with the words, it’s highly complementary to the art, but we try to rely mostly on art to communicate. I saw the opportunity to push things, and we had some doubts with the writing at first, but we eventually we just said fuck it, let’s make the book we want to make.

M3: I hate being spoon-fed and the last thing I wanted to do as a creator was to dumb down the book. We could have done that, but we never even talked about that. We wanted to make a book that we liked, and we just hoped other people would like it too. Ultimately, we wanted to put something out that we would love, something we want to read. And this sounds pretentious on a lot of levels, but in the end some of the greatest pieces of work are not trying to cater to a certain audience. Some creator owned books want people who read X-Men to read their book, and don’t get me wrong I like X-Men as much as the next person, but that’s not why I am doing a creator owned book.

We got some really bad reviews for the first issue. People were confused. But we thought it was cool, it was what we were going for, if you’re not able to go out of your scope that’s fine, it’s not the book for you. Everyone has their own taste, and it would be more horrifying to us if we had to compensate the story just to try to get everyone to like it.

You’ve mentioned that you’ve been influenced by Dune and LOTR. Could you talk about some of your other influences?

M3: It’s hard for me to talk about influence because I’m not really influenced by other writers or artists. I mean I love Dune, that changed my life, and there are artists I really love, but legitimately, when I am in the creative process I do all I can to pull what’s internally within me out. I don’t want to steal anyone else’s style. It would bother me if I saw someone’s work and I was just like oh yeah I want to make something like that. Again, not to sound New Agey, but I do meditate a lot and try to pull out images that are inside of me. Not always do I make paintings and know what it means, but I know it is tapping into something internal. That is really the engine behind why I want to make art, to figure out who I am to myself.

KG: I feel much the same way. I don’t want to use anyone else as a crutch; I want to inform my work myself. The goal is to express the internal, as Menton described, and get to a place, through whatever means, to concentrate through confidence. My experiences writing monocyte, the things I was happiest about, I would see and be like, “who wrote this?” I separated the work from myself, like it had no point of origin within me, and that’s when I knew it was special, when I got goose bumps.

M3: yes, and we are absolutely insane. There is a state of consciousness called hypnagogia, and its right as you wake up from sleep, before you’re awake. And what I did in that state was I kind of put these characters in my head and let them talk, and that’s where the prequel comic came from. Another example is the bird skull on the back of Monocyte’s head is a separate individual with a mind of his own. I can go into my head with that character and he will respond to me, we are crazy, but it is a lot of fun and it leads to self discovery. It’s helped me with temper issues, and personal issues, because I am learning more about myself rather than relying on something else to inform me, I am informing myself as to myself.

A lot of horror right now feeds off of these trends, whether it’s zombies, vampires, or whatever else, but Monocyte is a more cerebral type of horror. Why did you choose to do stray so far and do a creator owned book?

M3: I love all those horror movies, but what pisses me off is that I want to talk to Freddy Kreuger, or whoever, and find out why he is so evil. People have reasons for what they do, and I’ve always been compelled by stuff like that. Jason Voorhees is this killer with a hockey mask, but why is he killing people? Sure some teenagers piss him off as a kid, but that doesn’t justify being an immortal dude form a lake with a machete that fucks people up. To me if you’re getting into spooky stuff, the scariest thing to me is how these people justify this stuff in their head. So allegorically turning that into a story that is compelling to read is what I wanted to do. I think vampires, and goblins, and ghosts come out of our psyche where we have these fears we don’t want to talk about. Rather than being scared of what is right in front of us, people would rather look at these movies or whatever, and be scared of that, it’s easier. So for me, if you’re writing a horror book, it has to be about what really bothers you, whatever keeps you up at night, what makes you hot and sweaty. I hate that we have standardized this to the point that we are no longer dealing with the shadow side of the psyche, but we have now this Teletubby horror.

The Monocyte album was just released recently, and it works in conjunction with the book. So how did the two art forms come together? How do they compliment each other?

M3: Can I just say something. People keep writing articles about it and about my music project as Saltillo and people keep saying I’m classically trained. I’m not fucking classically trained! I never went to one music lesson in my life. I did not go to Julliard.

I spent most of my life making music, from when I was a kid until about a few years ago. I made a conscious choice to start doing artwork and stop music about four years ago. There was an album I released called Ganglion, and there was a track on there that was my goodbye to music. I get a lot of emails asking me where my music is. Well I never planned to make music again. But when we entered the Monocyte world, we lived there for 6 months before we started writing out the comic, and this place had a certain sound, a certain feeling. So we wanted to promote it because it’s a creator owned book, and it kind of came up as an idea. I started making music again and I missed it a lot. I hadn’t recorded in so long, and I was like oh my god this is like seeing my best friend again. So it kind of all came together after all that.

My last album had over 2 milllion hits online, and it blew me away. So I was shocked by the release of this album, I charted in the top 50 electronic on iTunes, I topped the industrial chart on Amazon. It has been so humbling and amazing that people are willing to listen to my music, which has allowed me to create something in a new way. But that said, I did not intend for people to buy the sound track and listen to it while reading the book, it was more so that this is how the world sounds to me. They do connect, but they are not meant to be side by side exclusively.

I hate asking this, but do you have any favorite horror movies?

M3: I love Session 9, I love it so much. I love the grainy style, I love the scene in the hallway where the camera turns. I love City of Lost Children, which I consider to be a horror movie. I could sit here for hours talking about it. Antichrist is disturbing, and if anyone can sit through that without getting disturbed they are psychotic.

KG: I have a hard time talking about horror, because for me it has to do with an individual’s relationship with a piece of work or a subject and I feel so displaced from other people’s relationships. I don’t think what I find horror other people would. I don’t find Monoctye to be a horror story at all. To me, that just means that some of our intent hit too close to home and it touches parts of their minds that make them uncomfortable. But as far as straight up horror, it’s hard for me to just categorize it, but if I had to give you 5, they would be, in no particular order: Antichrist, Let the Right One In, The Kingdom by Lars Von Trier, Apocalypse Now, and Werckmeister Harmonies.

Anything else you guys want to add?

M3: I am not classically trained!

KG: As an exclusive to BD announcement, IDW has just agreed to give us an oversized hardcover for the Monocyte collected edition! The dimensions will be 9×13.5″ allowing for the art to really shine. The book will include the digital series prequel, all four issues, and all 12 covers, as well as 60+ pages of new content for a total of 224 pages. The new pages will be filled in part with art contributions from some amazing friends in both the fine art and comic book world such as Toby Cypress, Scott Radke, Matthew Bone, Richard A. Kirk, Tim Roosen, and many many more. Also, menton3 and I will be creating a new short story set in the Monocyte world and occurring past the end of issue #4.

M3: yeah, we are also adding extra pages in the trade at the end of the book, that will explain a lot more of what’s going on in the story. Not to scam people out of money, but I want this ending to be presented with the entirety of the story. I also really appreciate all your coverage on BD, so thank you very much for that!

Thank you both for chatting with me, I really do love the book and I hope to see more of that world in the future.

Last week we announced that Steve Niles and Menton3 were teaming up for a somewhat secretive vamp-epic, Nosferatu Wars. It was announced today that the series will officially be a part of the Dark Horse lineup, making it’s premiere in an issue of Dark Horse Presents later this year. Niles’ has stated that he intends to do a lot more creator owned work in the coming year, and this is only the beginning. Nosferatu Wars is the story of two vampire lovers (surprise, surprise), who, after being separated for hundreds of years, are brought back together in modernity. Check out the official press release and some teasers below.

noswars3 Press Release from Dark Horse:

JANUARY 23, MILWAUKIE, OR—When Steve Niles (Criminal Macabre, 30 Days of Night) premiered artwork from his upcoming collaboration with artist Menton3 (Monocyte, Proof: Endangered, Crawl to Me) via his Twitter feed, speculation and anticipation spread like wildfire across the Internet. Today, Dark Horse is proud to announce that this new vampiric tale will premiere in Dark Horse Presents!

The Black Plague was a time of death and misery . . . except for the undead. For vampires, the Black Death was a welcome relief from being hunted and a time of incredible growth for the undead. On the night of their wedding, two vampire lovers are torn apart and separated for five hundred years, setting off a sequence of events that will bring the modern world to its knees!

“I haven’t been this excited about working on something in a long time. Menton3 is the perfect artist and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be doing this at Dark Horse,” Niles said. “This year I’m making a big push to become 100 percent creator owned. Nosferatu Wars will be a big part of that, I hope.”

Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith redefined the vampire genre with the groundbreaking comic series 30 Days of Night in 2002. Ten years later, Niles is poised to make history again, as he and Menton3 blow the sparkle off of the undead in Nosferatu Wars, premiering in Dark Horse Presents later this year!

Monocyte is a densely gothic work of science fiction that will grab you by the throat and refuse to let you go until the last page. For a book that seems to intentionally disregard all major tropes in mainstream comics today, it is without a doubt a book that will find a large number of fans, and deservingly so. After issue #2 it is certain that IDW has another hit horror book on their hands, one that brings something completely novel to the table, one that works adamantly to re-imagine the horror genre. It’s bleak, dark, absurd, complex, poetic, and it remains steadfast in its use of elevated language and beautiful artwork. The creative team certainly has a wonderfully dark vision, and to let us into their minds is an absolute treasure that you would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Read on for the skinny…

As far as the story goes in Monocyte, it’s quite complex, which makes it slightly intimidating at first glance. Set in a very distant future, humanity has simply been brushed aside by two feuding immortal races, the Olignostics and the Antedeluvians (each with their own backstory). Though the near-eradication-of-humanity plot has become quite the popular subgenre, it usually involving zombies or robots. Monocyte on the other hand, brings about two unique and twisted races from realms beyond that really do not compare to anything else (except perhaps Cenobites). Humans, which remain to be seen in the first two installments, are simply being used as slaves, though in very different ways, by the two fighting races.

Enter Monocyte: a one-eyed, all-powerful necromancer summoned by some metaphoric version of death to annihilate both immortal races. Turns out, they are not so immortal as they thought and Monocyte tears through them like a kid in a candy shop. The story becomes increasingly multifaceted as the narrative develops, and it may take a few read-throughs before having a firm grasp on the rich chronicle the team has created. Monocyte gives you the feeling that the creative team has a lot more in their twisted minds than you actually get to see, and this is often makes for the best stories.

The first issue functions, for the most part, as an introduction to the weird and wild futuristic universe. Monocyte is depicted as a god-like entity that towers over his prey, easily disposing of the supposedly immortal Olignostics. Menton3 almost always shows the title character towering above the “immortals”, making their gothic guise seem innocent in contrast to his gigantic, weathered alien body.

The first issue leaves many questions to be answered, the complexity and enigmatic nature of the book leaves your mind in shambles, questioning, “what the hell did I just read?” However, issue #2 completely immerses you into the world of Menton3 and Kasra Ghanbari. Issue #2 begins without missing a beat and progresses the plotline far beyond what I imagined would be accomplished in the one issue. With all the backstory out of the way, the motives of the two clans become clear, and the treachery that ensues complicates the plot further.

Monocyte speaks for the first time in the second issue, and in contrast to his disturbing and large stature, he speaks with eerie elegance and scarcity, quoting the words of Hamlet, which, oddly, fit well within the context of the plot. By the end of the second issue, it’s totally unclear where the writers will take the story, and it’s that unpredictability mixed with the disturbing visuals that makes Monocyte so engaging.

Particularly what blew me away with the second issue is the page of Moses deep in meditation. The text, which surrounds the character in a semi circle, can be read beginning from either end with equal elegance. This is something that if ever, has rarely been done in comics, and it’s extremely refreshing to see someone play around with graphic storytelling.

As you can probably tell, Monocyte really stands out from other popular comics due to its use of high language and unconventional narrative structure. Menton3 and Kasra Ghanbari are totally unafraid and unabashed to delve headfirst into poetic prose, elevating this story to a certain plateau where it is largely untouched by any other popular comic. For those of you that still have friends who believe comics are merely for the dull-witted, show them this book, but warn them that they may never sleep again. Though I admit I do not fully understand all that is going on, I’m totally involved in everything this book represents. Nonetheless, it must be said that the elevated use of language and the complicated universe is not be for everybody. The density of the story, and the convoluted writing style will turn some readers off.

I shouldn’t even have to mention how good Menton’s artwork is. Menton’s artwork is seriously unparalleled. There is nobody else in the industry, or elsewhere for that matter, that I could even begin to compare him to. It is so utterly different from any other professional artist in comics today, and the bleak and grim style of his work fits the book perfectly. He mixes sketchy charcoal style drawings with painted backgrounds that add a real sense of depth and emotional lighting to the pages. He has an obvious affinity for symbols and emblems, which he throws in every now and then which make this look as though it could be centuries old. Menton3 has the goods, and he’s not afraid to pull out all the stops with Monocyte.

The combination of atypical prose, the deeply metaphoric, and the artistic style make this book so much more terrifying than any currently running horror book. Monocyte may just be the next big thing in horror, going beyond our imagination into the realm of the unknown. There is a certain pseudo-Lovecraftian vision that comes out of Monocyte with its cosmic level of terror, and I feel, or perhaps hope, this will really pave the way for a new kind of horror. The back-stories that come with the issues (specifically Riley Rossmo’s) really pull it together, displaying how vast this world really is. If you’re looking for an offbeat absurdist tale that mixes austere sc-fi, religion, poetry, philosophy, and horror, then run to your comic shop and pick this up.
