In the short time that it’s been out, Resident Evil 2 has already become the ultimate playground for modders and has seen some ingenious alterations. From jokey redesigns to gameplay tweaks, and even loving homages to the PSone original, RE:2’s passionate community has clearly having a blast with the remake.

One aspect that has been subjected to repeated customization is the now-infamous Mr. X. Arguably the scariest thing about the game, it’s no surprise to see that modders have zeroed in on this hulking stalker, overhauling his soundtrack, subjecting him to cloning and (most bizarrely) stripping him of his clothes. Whatever floats your boat I guess.

It was only a matter of time then, before someone did the obvious and reskinned the enemy to look a bit like his more famous, and significantly upgraded, counterpart: Nemesis. That’s right, thanks to the efforts of forum-user ZERO, the titular villain from the franchise’s third entry can now (sort of) be found prowling the Raccoon Police Department like it’s 1999 all over again (though not as many S.T.A.R.S. to be found, unfortunately)

As aforementioned, this is basically just a reskin of Mr. X, so don’t expect him to exhibit any idiosyncratic behaviors, or to brandish his iconic rocket launcher. Still, he looks undeniably impressive (if not quite there yet design-wise) and the modder has lifted his intimidating sound effects from the original, along with the theme music, making the whole thing feel very authentic.

With an RE:3 remake rumored to be in the pipeline (to be honest, it’s practically a given now) we might not have to wait too long before we get to see a proper recreation of Nemesis in his own game. Until then, however, this is a fun little extra that should satisfy fans.

The mod can be accessed here and if you want to see it in action, BeastGamingHD has put together this cool little preview:

I know that some folks have had their fill of Resident Evil news this week. I mean, it’s only taken an eternity for Capcom to announce the remake of Resident Evil 2, show off the goods, reveal what goods you get, and show the game in action. Still, others like myself can’t get enough news. Like the announcement that the Resident Evil 4 HD Project mod finally has a release date!

The mod, which has been in the works for over four years, will be released on Friday, July 13, 2018. The mod in question improves the original game’s textures (up to 16x their original resolution), introduces new dynamic lighting and shadows, updates to the UI, character models and more.

In a detailed blog post, the creators also explain that just because the mod has a release date, doesn’t mean that it’s “complete”. Things like enemies, NPCs and other playable characters will still need to have work done, but looking at the comparison videos on author’s YouTube page, it’s definitely going to be worth the wait.

Many longtime fans of the original Doom know about Sergeant_Mark_IV’s mod, Brutal Doom. Quite possibly the most definitive gameplay enhancement mod around, Brutal Doom is still going strong since its debut in 2012, and improving with each iteration. Seriously, if you haven’t played with this mod, you’re missing out. I mean, it’s friggin’ free to use!

Shilling aside, Sergeant_Mark_IV yesterday gave an update on the public test version of Brutal Doom v21. It’s not the completed version (which will probably be released after Christmas), but there’s already tons of new and enhanced features for guns, gore, enemies and even the maps. Ever wanted to rip out a Cacodemon’s eye and throw it at enemies? How about giving your rocket launcher a 3x zoom with a night scope? What about the ability to grab a zombie soldier and fling him across the room? You can with this update.

In addition, Brutal Doom is also up for Moddb’s Mod of the Year awards. If you’re a fan of the mod, consider voting. Rip and tear to your heart’s content!

After two months of development, the three-man team behind the Doom 4 Doom weapon mod made their July 18th deadline, releasing D4D 66 days after the arrival of the new Doom, the single-player arsenal from which this impressive mod brings — complete with a retro look and alternate fire mode for each weapon — to the classic Doom maps via GZdoom.

D4D features every weapon from the reboot’s story mode, so it does not currently include any of the multiplayer-exclusive weapons, such as the Hellshot or Vortex Rifle. The weapons still don’t need to be reloaded, and though each weapon mod works as it did in the reboot, there is no option to upgrade them. Instead, each weapon is in a “fixed upgrade state.”

“The mod tries to bring the weapons as accurately as possible in looks, behavior and timings,” explains its creators. “However, we also took some liberties regarding some behaviors and balance. For example, the “Double Trouble” super shotgun, when ported in here became extremely overpowered, so we increased ammo usage. Another instance is the “Gatling Rotator” mod for the chaingun, which makes it now fire explosive rounds at a slower rate.”

In addition to all of that, D4D introduces improved gore effects and a double-jump feature that can be toggled on or off. It makes no changes to enemy behavior so D4D should be compatible with most aesthetic mods, like enhanced texture packs. It does not add Glory Kills or ledge-grabbing.

Doom 4 Doom can be found over here, along with some instructions for installing it.

Since the very beginning, Doom has relied on a balance of fluid movement and satisfying gunplay that form the core of the series’ wide appeal and incredible staying power. Its latest incarnation successfully preserved that balance, improving it in small ways, with Glory Kills and alternate firing modes for its arsenal of weapons. The latter is now being preserved by the creators of the upcoming Doom for Doom mod, which brings the arsenal from the reboot to the first two Doom games.

Why would someone do such a thing? Because the team behind it were impressed by modder Neccronixis, who remade the weapons from the new game using the retro aesthetics of the originals. “They were too good to not be put to use.”

They were right, as you’re about to see in this new teaser for the mod that’s currently expected to hit PC on July 18 — 6 + 6 + 6, har har — where it will bring the reboot’s arsenal with a retro look and their secondary fire modes, in addition to an optional double-jump, and improved gore effects.

For more Doom goodness, I highly recommend you have a look at Tyler’s awesome (and lengthy) piece on the origins of the newest game. More details can be found in the ZDoom forums.

The shooter genre has evolved considerably since the original Doom took it mainstream back in 1993. Some of the new stuff that games developers have come up with since then can be seen in the series reboot that released earlier this month, but what’s neat about this latest entry is in how genuinely old school it feels, specifically in regards to its arsenal of weapons.

More than two decades separate the two games, but the reboot sticks close enough to the fluid and fast-paced combat that continues to be such an important part of the classic Doom experience that you could probably take the weapons out of the 2016 game, drop them in the 1993 original, and barely notice a difference.

Did I say probably? I meant absolutely, and ZDoom modder DBThanatos is already working on something that does this very thing. Come have a look.

The DOOM for DooM mod is unfinished, with alternate firing modes missing for every weapon other than the pump shotgun and pistol. DBThanatos is working to implement the rest, as well as add even more gore. “I will indeed add extra gore,” he writes on the ZDoom forums, “Not [Brutal Doom] levels of gore, but enough to satisfy my needs.”

And here’s the obligatory reminder that my Doom review is something that continues to exist exclusively for your reading pleasure. I live to serve you.

I had some strange parents, if I were to think back on my childhood. I’m my dad’s third kid and his second son, so I was treated almost like an experiment. I’m pretty sure my dad looked at me when I was born and thought, “I can fuck around with this one. I have two good other ones.”

As a result, I was able to watch a ton of R-rated movies before I was in the first grade, I was taken to gun and knife shows on the hunt for antique blades, and the like. But one thing both my parents agreed upon was that I couldn’t play violent video games. Why? I have absolutely no idea. Apparently it was okay to watch Predator but not play Freedom Force on the NES. Strange, strange parents…

One of the big games that I loved watching my friends play whenever I went over to their place was Doom. Obviously there were others, like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, etc… that really drew me in but it was Doom that captured my imagination. After all, it was essentially the video game version of those 80’s action movies that my dad and I loved watching together. A badass killing machine is tasked with saving the world against seemingly unstoppable villains? Fuck yeah!

That’s why I’m so pumped and excited about this mod that takes Doom and reskins it to make it look and feel just like an Aliens game! It really looks like a game that ID Software would’ve created had they received the Aliens license and it’s making me wish I had a PC so that I could play it!

Something that I think is super cool about this mod is the acid blood mechanic. After you blast apart a xenomorph, there are puddles of acid blood that hurt your character if you step on them. So you have to wait a bit before progressing, which throttles back the frantic frenzy of the game into something a bit more paced, a bit more suspenseful. Because who knows what waiting could bring around the corner?

Have you grown tired of the satisfying popping sound a zombie’s head makes when it’s caved in by the sledgehammer you strapped a car battery to, just because you could? Me too. We’ve been cruel to the ghouls in Dying Light long enough. It’s time we take up our homemade Mjolnirs and turn them on our friends and allies.

PC players can do exactly that thanks to the Steam Workshop mod, Don’t Drown. Created by Steam user Rabid Squirrel, this PVP mod pits a party of players against each other with the goal of surviving as long as possible on an island that’s prone to flooding and populated exclusively by enemies of the living and dead varieties.

Don’t Drown is available to download right now, though it’s still a work in progress. Its creator is currently working on adding an underground cave system to it in a future update.

Speaking of future updates, next month we’re getting quite a lot of new content when the massive expansion Dying Light: The Following arrives February 9 alongside the Enhanced Edition.

The unpredictable nature of video games leaves little room for certainty. Anything can happen. A promising title might get cancelled, a sure bet might become a spectacular flop, and I might get around to playing every game in my Steam library.

Because the Internet is an untamable beast with a penchant for combining things to humorous and/or magical effect, and Dying Light has made it incredibly easy for us to do what what we want with the game, it was only a matter of time until someone combined it with the game that paved the way so we could show off to our friends online with sick 360-degree backflip somersaults.

If you ever doubted that Dying Light and Mirror’s Edge were meant to be, Steam user Elimina (via Kotaku) has definitive proof that the two pair nicely with each other.

Last October, Creative Assembly set a new bar for the Aliens franchise, which had endured a number of failed attempts at bringing the magic of the films to video games. Alien: Isolation felt like a natural extension of the series, with environments that looked like actual movie sets and an unpredictable alien that was legitimately terrifying.

The alien wasn’t the only foe that roamed the Sevastopol, but even when it wasn’t actively prowling the same dark corridors as Amanda Ripley, the creature’s fondness for surprise vent attacks ensured its presence was always felt.

Without the threat of getting sucker-stabbed through the chest because I made the mistake of giving my trigger finger a few seconds to relax, I might’ve been able to enjoy the incredible amount of detail that makes Alien: Isolation such a visually stunning game. It might also emphasize the Isolation bit, so you’ll have to ask yourself: would you rather be lonely or spend every second in a cold sweat, waiting to meet a horrifically painful death?

If it’s the former, you may want to check out this mod from Steam user [Lebowski]-=ThArK=-.

Capcom did a stellar job when they updated the beloved Gamecube remake of the original Resident Evil back in January, but I always felt like it was missing something to really bring it all together. Something itchy, tasty, like a Jill Sandwich, perhaps.

You may want to dust off those rose colored glasses, because you’re about to be hit with a wave of nostalgia that could only be the product of the glorious year that was 1996.

“It took me a long time to finish this mod mainly because there were more than 500 audio files to edit,” explains Bunny, the mod’s creator. “And the dialogues were already mixed with sound effects like footsteps, gunshots, enemies, etc. So at some point the editing process became tedious and I had to take breaks more often.”

It was clearly worth the effort. You can grab the mod over here.

Capcom has given Resident Evil fans a number of gifts this year, with more on the way in the form of the Resident Evil 0 remaster, the Resident Evil 2 remake, and even the Umbrella Corps spin-off, which looks like it could be a good time. Mods like this remind me how wonderfully cheesy this series once was, as opposed to the moldy cheese it’s unintentionally accrued in recent years.

After spending quite a lot of time with the Halo Master Chief Collection, and specifically the Halo 2 remake that — like the Halo remake that preceded it — lets players switch between the original game and the updated version with the press of a button. Is this feature something you might be interested in seeing Capcom try, possibly even with the upcoming Resident Evil 2 remake?

As we continue to wait patiently for Silent Hills to come and either rescue Konami’s ailing survival horror franchise from a slow death or deliver the killing blow, the modding community has been busy working on a first-person Half-Life 2 mod that’s more Silent Hill than Silent Hill has been for quite some time. I’ve spent some time with it already, and it looks fantastic. I can’t speak for the gameplay yet, but I can confirm that it nails the atmosphere down perfectly.

Alchemilla is available now on ModDB. If you’re looking to roam those foggy streets yourself, don’t forget to grab the Source SDK 2013 from the Steam Tools library first.

Since its release, an extremely dedicated community of modders and aspiring game developers has grown around Amnesia: The Dark Descent, keeping it alive far longer than the “active” lifespan the average survival game might enjoy. One of the more acclaimed works to come from its community is Penumbra: Necrologue, a total conversion mod that released last Halloween.

It’s oddly fitting that this fan-made mod should pick up where Penumbra: Requiem left off, seeing as Amnesia wouldn’t have been possible without the Penumbra trilogy.

Necrologue is available now on ModDB, where it won Best Singleplayer in the site’s Mod of the Year awards. With English and Russian voice work, multiple endings and an original soundtrack, it sounds like a true passion project.

The game recently arrived on Steam Greenlight, along with some brand new footage. Once it’s been approved, Necrologue will release as a free-to-play title.

I feel like I should start this off by reminding you that it’s never too late to get your favorite writer a Christmas gift, and that if you need an idea of what to get him, you may want to consider this extremely cool SNES that’s been modded by graphic designer Vadu Amka to look like Dracula’s tomb. This beauty isn’t just another retro gaming console, and it’s more than just a love letter to the Castlevania games — it’s a work of art.

It’d also look great literally anywhere in my apartment, if you were curious.

For any hands-on types who may be looking at this and wondering how you can make one of your own, it’s made from a mix of resin and acrylic and a post on its maker’s website claims the thing took about 80 hours to complete.

More pics can be found right here.

If there’s one thing the gaming community loves, it’s spending countless hours tweaking and updating retro games like id Software’s iconic shooter, Doom. The game released more than two decades ago, and if the number of mods we’ve seen since then is anything to go by, there may be more people modding Doom than there are those who play it just for fun.

This latest mod, dubbed “DemonSteele”, comes from YouTuber TerminusEst13. According to its maker, this impressive reimagining of the classic shooter was designed as a “love letter to retro games, 80s/90s anime, and early heavy metal.”

For those brave enough to take a stab at the “DemonSteele” mod, it can be downloaded here.

It’s unfinished, so it’s a little rough, but you can play it with your friends and it’s available on consoles, so I think its current state is something we can overlook for now.

As we all patiently wait for Bethesda to shed some light on the next Doom game, which we may even hear from at E3 next month (*fingers crossed*), some fans are working on a total conversion mod of Doom II. It’s still early on, but the results are already thoroughly impressive.

The game is called Total Chaos, and when it’s completed it’ll be an open-world survival horror game where players take on the role of a poor sap who’s been dropped on a mysterious island with nothing but a video camera. Apparently, the island was once a community of coal miners, until they all vanished. Sounds like a spin on the legend of the Roanoke colony.

Because the developer wants to give us the choice to do what we want, that means we can choose to seek out the lost miners, or we can simply strive to survive.

Should you come across one of the island’s less welcoming inhabitants, your options for dispatching them are limited. It sounds like the environment can be used to your advantage, as there will be various hazards strewn about. Otherwise, running away screaming is the tactic I often employ.

For more on Total Chaos, check out its website.

We’ve covered Resident Evil creations in Minecraft before, but I’ve never seen something quite like this. It’s a quality mod that adds two new ores (ruby and steel), herbs, weapons, RPD armor, weapons, enemies, and more from the Resident Evil universe. I’m especially fond of Wesker’s armor, because that man knows how to dress. Or he did (RIP, man). I would’ve liked to see arguably the most iconic item from the RE games make its way into the mod — the ink ribbons and/or typewriter — but everything else is so well done that complaining about something like that would be nitpicky. Check out the mod after the jump!

If you want to get your zombie apocalypse survival on but lack the patience to wait for the DayZ standalone, coming later this year (hopefully soon), I might suggest getting the mod on Steam. If you own Arma 2 and its expansion Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead — or the Arma 2: Combined Operations bundle — than nothing is stopping you from getting the mod. It’s free, so there isn’t much risk involved. If you haven’t purchased Arma 2 yet then you won’t have to wait long. In a recent Reddit AMA, DayZ creator Dean Hall said he expects the standalone to release before April.

I think it’s safe to say there are a lot of people out there that have a serious excess of time. Lucky for us these individuals don’t choose to spend their time thinking up creative ways to murder people or learning how to create bombs out of household supplies; instead they use their extraordinary talents to fabricate incredible console mods.

But since there’s a slew of lists counting down the most amazing xbox/ps3/wii mods I decided to scour the vast and knowledgeable interwebs in search of the craziest, most disturbing and deliciously twisted console mods I could find. What follows are the ten I think stand above the rest.

A Bloodstained PS3

If anything, this should be a lesson to anyone who’s planning on beating someone to death with their PS3. First off, there are far better ways to crush a mushy skull. Baseball bats, bricks, hammers, etc. will do the job more efficiently than Sony’s console. But if you can’t find any other blunt objects lying around try using the black version because it’ll be way easier to wash off.

The Serial Killer’s Xbox

Alright, forget that boring PS3 above, this is what I’m talking about. This is what my 360 looked like after I… wait, scratch that. Let’s just say this is a little more realistic.

A 360 Fit For a Locust

I don’t know which creeps me out more, the burnt look of the case or that creepy glowing red eye that stares at me with a malicious hunger, peering deep into my soul. But this is one fucking awesome console mod. If Locusts were gamers, which I’m sure they are, this is what I picture sitting under their TV. That and a pile of severed human heads.

The PS3 That Wanted to be an Alien

Other than the insane amount of detail invested into this mod, apparently the alien you see bursting out of this poor, unsuspecting PS3 was actually molded out of the original case. Talk about being resourceful.

I Have an Eye On You

Apologies for the crappy resolution image, if you can get past that you’ll see a highly unsettling PS3 mod that has tons of beady yellow eyes staring back at you, judging you while you play LittleBigPlanet or Killzone 2 for hours on end. This is the type of PS3 that waits for you to turn off the lights and go to bed before it strikes with its wand-waving fury.

Wow… Just, Wow.

If there was ever a console that could steal your soul, this would be it. This hellish creation isn’t over-the-top in gore or giant decals, instead its creator simply wanted to convey a simple message, one I’m sure sounded something like “If you play with this PS3, it will eat your soul and leave you lying in the fetal position in a puddle of your own feces.” Or something like that.

This 360 is Huuungray!

This is the only mod on the list that would look fabulous with a pair of crocodile skin boots. Too much? Err hem, What I meant is its badass look will instantly let all your friends know how much of a tough manly man you are. Yeah, that’s better.

Why So Serious?

Not sure why this made the list? Let me paint the scenario for you: You’re alone, it’s a cold night, and you’ve just sat down on your comfy Sumo Gigantor to get your game on. But as soon as you lean forward to turn your console on the Joker’s face bursts from your on button and begins laughing maniacally in a high pitched chipmunk voice (caused by the tiny size of his head). Are you saying that wouldn’t cause you to shit out your spine?

The Xbox From HELL

This Xbox looks like it just escaped from the burning pits of Hell, and that makes me want to add its delicious crimson body to my entertainment center. I’ll feed it Wiis for breakfast and listen to their puny melodic screams as it consumes them alive.

This Wii Will Cut You

Speaking of the Wii, this is the only one that managed to be tough enough to make the list, and for good reason. Outside of a plethora of Zelda, Metroid and Mario mods there isn’t much diversity when it comes to Wii mods. Then I came across this fantastic Manhunt inspired creation you see before you. This Wii is not a toy. It is not a child’s plaything. It. Will. Kill. You.

In case you missed the rest of the series, here’s a quick recap:
Day 1, A Resident Evil Retrospective
Day 2, A Silent Hill Retrospective
Day 3, What Do You Fear?
Day 4, The Four Scariest Kids in Gaming
Day 5, A Look Through the Lense
Day 6, 6 New Games You Need to Play this Halloween
Day 7, Alone in the Tower
Day 8, The 7 Biggest Horror Games of 2011
Day 9, The Real Silent Hill

I love me some StarCraft 2 and I’ve even been known to enjoy the occasional horror game every now and then so this mod entitled Project Vector looks pretty damn cool. You assume the role of a space marine with shiny LEDs on his back who has the miraculous ability to float towards his enemies making them cower in fear as they get disintegrated by the gnome cannons placed on each of his breasts.

None of that is true. Actually, not much is known about the story but it’s probably safe to say you play as a marine who’s hunting aliens in an assortment of eerie environments (like the cruiser in the video after the jump). The goal of the mod is to reshape StarCraft 2, a real-time strategy game, into a fully playable third-person horror game, and to that extent I think it’s all coming along quite nicely. Check out some very creepy gameplay after the jump.

Obviously it still requires a good deal more work, like a drastically shorter character that doesn’t take up so much of the screen. Other than that I’ve always thought the Zerg were pretty intimidating so assuming those are the baddies you have to fight this could end up being a must-have whenever it’s finished. Who knows, maybe this could actually make up for the long lost (yet still sorely missed) StarCraft: Ghost. So what about you, what would you like to see in a StarCraft horror game?
