A24 dropped a mysterious and unexpected teaser for an upcoming horror movie ahead of Resident Evil in theaters this weekend, loaded with what looks like security camera footage from inside a terrifying haunted attraction. “A24 invites you,” the teaser trailer explains, “to an experience you’ll never forget.” The title of this mysterious horror movie? Slayground.

While the footage is only playing in theaters and hasn’t yet made its way online, the teaser does end with a website URL that takes us further into the world of Slayground: RunLikeHell.com.

So what is Slayground, you ask? Well, it turns out this is Jeremy Saulnier’s (Green Room, Rebel Ridge) new horror movie for A24, which previously had a much different title: October.

Described as a Halloween-set fugitive thriller, the newly titled Slayground stars Imogen Poots (Green Room), James Badge Dale (The Empty Man), Matty Matheson (“The Bear”), Cory Michael Smith (Saturday Night), Chase Sui Wonders (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), Young Mazino (“The Last of Us”), and Stephen Root (“Widow’s Bay”).

World of Reel provides a bit more information about the upcoming movie. They detail, “Slayground takes its title from the haunted attraction where the lead character works.” The outlet dives in further, “the plot follows Cory Michael Smith’s character, the primary suspect in a mass murder investigation, after he escapes police custody. He goes on the run, attempting to prove his innocence while becoming the target of a massive manhunt.”

Head over to RunLikeHell.com to sign up for updates. No word yet on when the horror movie will be released, but take note of the countdown clock on the official website…

Jeremy Saulnier directs from his own script, with A24 producing and releasing Slayground.

The PlayStation Plus games for October have been announced today and there’s a great treat for your Halloween gaming as the asymmetrical multiplayer Friday the 13th: The Game stalks its way onto the service.

Released last year, Gun Media’s Friday the 13th sees players assume the role of Jason or his hapless victims in a game of cat and mouse around familiar locations from the hit horror film franchise. It had a rocky launch and has been marred by legal troubles regarding the use of the license, but it’s shaped itself into a fun multiplayer horror hoot despite this.

Friday the 13th is joined on October’s PS Plus lineup by Laser League, 2064 Read Only Memories and The Bridge. The full lineup is below.

All games will become available to download from Tuesday, October 2.

If you’re looking for stuff to watch this October, this video is essential.

As we recently laid out for you, the Halloween season we’re currently in the midst of is one of the best in most of our lifetimes. As we head into October, we’ve already been treated to films such as IT, mother! and The Houses October Built 2, along with the returns of “Channel Zero” and “American Horror Story.”

And we’re just getting started.

October 2017 is absolutely LOADED with horror on screens both big and small. Cult of Chucky, Leatherface and Jigsaw are just a small handful of the films that will lead us right into Halloween, and then there’s of course the new seasons of both “Stranger Things” and “The Walking Dead.”

This video put together by YouTube’s thetabitha1996 quickly runs through nearly all of October’s new releases, only leaving out a select few titles like the aforementioned eighth season of “The Walking Dead” (October 22) and Creep 2 (October 24).

Otherwise, they’re pretty much all here!

October signifies the openings haunted house attractions all over the country. Some are more famous than others, but which one is the scariest? That distinction (honor?) supposedly goes to McKamey Manor in San Diego, California. Famous for putting its patrons through the wringer, the notorious haunted house is known for giving its patrons haircuts, binding and gagging them, pouring fake blood on them and even putting things in their mouths. Despite this, McKamey Manor still attracts a healthy amount of masochists each year. It is so popular, in fact, that at one point the wait list was 24,000 people long!

Dubbed a “survival horror boot camp experience” by Russ McKamey, the Manor’s founder, McKamey Manor requires that all patrons sign a waiver before beginning the eight-hour “tour.” Said tour actually takes place in McKamey’s own backyard, which operates as McKamey Manor every October. The theme of his haunted house attraction changes every year as well (this year the theme is “The Chamber“).

Once the waivers are signed and the disclaimers are discussed, the tour begins. As the patrons move along, McKamey follows them with a video camera to document their attempt to make it through the Manor (probably for legal purposes). He then uploads the videos on the McKamey Manor YouTube Channel. The aforementioned haircuts, mouth-stuffings and various other forms of torment are performed as the guests try to make it through the entire experience (no one has ever been able to finish the whole thing, which could last anywhere from four to eight hours).

Guests are pretty much guaranteed to walk out with bruises, cuts, scrapes and possibly broken bones (so says the waiver), and they willingly walk in to it. This is perfectly legal, though there are people that challenge the operation’s legality. In fact, there is a Facebook Group devoted to calling the place out for allegedly abusing its patrons. Granted, the patrons are abused, but they are willingly abused. Where does one draw the line? McKamey does not charge admission for the tour, so he doesn’t even make any money off of it. He just enjoys scaring the pants off of people.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I could do this. Just reading the Warning Page on the haunted house’s website gives me anxiety. I certainly applaud anyone who signs up for it though. If you’re thinking about jumping on the waiting list for McKamey Manor, take a look at the following behind-the-scenes video that The Guardian made last year. It may help alleviate your fears while you’re going through the house. Or maybe it will make them worse. Who knows?

Have any of you been to McKamey Manor? Tell your story in the comments below!

Halloween may be the time of the season for things that go bump in the night, but every once in a while it’s nice to focus on the more mundane aspects of the holiday. Movies that depict this more realistic side of things are few and far in-between, but are a welcome addition to the ever-expanding collection of Halloween marathon material. Linda Palmer’s long-delayed comedy, Halloween Party, attempts join this collection by depicting the age-old struggle of hosting (and surviving) a seasonal costume party.

Starring Elle Newlands, Frank Gangarossa, Chris Pentzell, Christian Blackburn, David Banks and many others in an ensemble cast of partygoers and troublemakers, Halloween Party chronicles the drama going on in and around the titular house party. Unbeknownst to the guests, the host family decides to set up hidden cameras and a costumed crew to spy on them. Spooky hijinks ensue, featuring mysterious fortune-tellers, jealous werewolves and disappointed trick-or-treaters.

Naturally, this is a very different kind of Halloween movie compared to the usual slashers and ghost stories, but that doesn’t stop the film from carrying a genuine autumn vibe. Anyone who’s ever been to a costume party can relate to the struggles of both the hosts and guests, especially as they’re forced to deal with drunk versions of their friends and colleagues. This results in a charming movie with an interesting cast of characters and a believable story.

That being said, Halloween Party isn’t exactly the laugh-out-loud comedy that it hopes to be. The script, while clever enough, doesn’t feature much in the way of actual humor, instead relying on superficial gags that don’t benefit the film as a whole. Much of the humor relied on hidden footage of the guests on their worst behavior, but that ends up feeling more mean-spirited than actually funny. The lack of a true protagonist also muddled the experience, though it could be argued that the Stud-Finder Girl (Newlands) and Homeless Guy (Gangarossa) were the real main characters.

The likeable cast really made it worth enduring these unfunny moments, however, as the character interaction was certainly the best part of the movie. Seeing the guests argue over whether or not Gangarossa’s character was an actual homeless person or not was genuinely funny, and it was particularly interesting to see how all these colorful characters related to Ben and Julie (the hosts).

Nevertheless, these positive aspects don’t fully redeem Halloween Party‘s darker side. The hidden cameras were more of a gimmick than anything else, rarely contributing to the story, and the script could have used some better jokes. Although, if you can get past these demerits, there is still a fun time to be had with the movie. It may not be the best comedy out there, but Halloween Party will certainly get you into the October spirit.

Each morning I’ve been checking to see what horror films have released that day in horror, and while the month started off strong it sort of tapered off. Until today.

October 10th was a pretty great day in horror history, bringing us David Cronenberg’s 1975 Shivers (They Came from Within). Released in the States in July of 1976, the film follows the residents of a suburban high-rise apartment building who are infected by a strain of parasites that turn them into mindless, sex-crazed fiends out to infect others by the slightest sexual contact. This was Cronenberg’s first foray into body horror and would eventually lead to him terrorizing horror fans with films like Rabid, The Brood, Scanners, Videodrome, The Dead Zone, Dead Ringers and even The Fly. With Shivers, Cronenberg won “Best Director” at the 1975 Sitges Film Festival.

Wiki notes some interesting controversy I wasn’t aware of:

The Canadian journalist Robert Fulford, writing as “Marshall Delaney”, decried the content of Shivers in the pages of the national magazine Saturday Night. Since Cronenberg’s film was partially financed by the taxpayer-funded Canadian Film Development Corporation (later known as Telefilm Canada), Fulford headlined the article “You Should Know How Bad This Movie Is, You Paid For It.” He called it “crammed with blood, violence and depraved sex” and “the most repulsive movie I’ve ever seen.” Not only did this high profile attack make it more difficult for Cronenberg to obtain funding for his subsequent movies, but Cronenberg later said Fulford’s article also resulted in him being kicked out of his apartment in Toronto due to his landlord’s inclusion of a “morality clause” in the lease.

Another interesting addition to October 10th in horror history is Roger Spottiswoode’s Terror Train, which would star Halloween‘s Jamie Lee Curtis. The 1980 slasher film was part of the early masked-slasher horror boom, and follows the members of a college fraternity who played a cruel prank on a shy kid named Kenny Hampson. Years later, they are having a costume party on a train; unbeknownst to them, someone has boarded the train with them and is killing them all one by one. According to Wiki, FOX acquired the film and put $5M into P&A only to have the film gross $8M. Not the booming success they had hoped for.

Also released on this day, Tony Malanowski’s 1978 Night of Horror, which would eventually open in the States in 1981.

In 2003 Uwe Boll would break onto the scene with his horrid video game adaptation, House of the Dead, which would bomb at the box office. Still, the film garnered a “director’s cut” so Boll could show what he really intended to release. It was just as terrible. The new version “features new dialogue, alternative takes, pop up commentary and animation from the original video game.” He produced an equally awful direct-to-video sequel. In the adaptation of the SEGA game, a group of unsuspecting teens stumble upon the living dead in an old house. When one of them dies during a rave at the house, the others band together to get revenge.

Lastly, the Dowdle brothers got behind the camera for the 2008 Quarantine, a found-footage remake of [REC] that starred “Dexter’s” Jennifer Carpenter as a television reporter who is trapped inside a building quarantined by the CDC after the outbreak of a mysterious virus which turns humans into bloodthirsty killers. It was surprisingly good, considering the original was an instant horror classic. It too spawned a very awful direct-to-video sequel.

Ironic that Sony just got behind the long-delayed Zombieland (review) sequel as today marks the 5th anniversary of Ruben Fleischer’s hilarious horror comedy that starred Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray (who had the most epic cameo of the decade). The film was a monster success taking in $100M worldwide, which is why a sequel was quickly put into development, even if it never came into fruition. One of the best little gimmicks in the film are the “rules”. Which rule would be your flaw? Too bad the Amazon television pilot was so awful because we could have had a world of Zombieland…

Also released in 2009 was Filmax and Magnet’s incredible found-footage sequel [REC]2 (review), which originally premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. This was in the early days of VOD platform pushes, and was considered an exciting moment for horror fans to be able to rent it the same day as it was in theaters. The coolest aspect of the sequel was how Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza evolved the story so that these zombies were actually possessed by demons.

What really makes October 2 so special is it’s the day DreamWorks took a big chance on The Ring, one of the first remakes that started the reboot fad and also the J-horror trend. Nothing ever came close to the success The Ring had both financially and in terms of quality horror. Gore Verbinski’s visual style is what set the tone for this terrifying reboot of the Japanese franchise, Ringu, which racked in $250M worldwide. It’s also one of the rare horror films to break $100M in the states, actually pulling in a shocking $129M. I remember DreamWorks setting up early screenings across the country, which is what started the hype train a rollin’. It’s too bad the sequel was so awful, even though the home video release came with a kickass short film , directed by TMNT and Texas Chainsaw: The Beginning‘s Jonathan Liebesman. If you have no teen this, seek it out immediately. Even though the franchise has gone quiet, a 3-D sequel is in the works (completely bypassing a found-footage one).

October 2 was even better, though, sharing the day with Dee Snider’s criminally underrated, way ahead of its time 1998 Strangeland, about teenage girls who are victimized by a psycho (named Captain Howdy) who lures them using the Internet. The film was a box office disaster, but has found life among us horror fans on home video.

In 1987 Kathryn Bigelow’s revolutionary vamp flick, Near Dark, blasted into theaters. Starring Lance Henriksen, Adrian Pasdar, Bill Paxton, Jenny Wright and Tim Thomerson, “Country boy Caleb Colton (Adrian Pasdar) whittles away the quiet rural nights hunting local girls – but when he falls prey to the mysterious and beautiful Mae (Jenny Wright), Caleb unknowingly becomes the hunted. Mae is no ordinary girl, Caleb soon learns; she is part of an outlaw band of vampires, and their love is about to lure him into a terrifying world of bloodlust, mayhem and absolute horror. Will Caleb pay the ultimate price for love and eternal life – or will he find a way to defeat the evil growing inside him each night NEAR DARK?” The film is insanely bloody and features some wicked special effects work.

Of these aforementioned films, which is your favorite, and which are you going to revisit this coming weekend? I feel like re-watching them all is in order…

For the month of October we’re going to take you down memory lane and reveal what horror films opened on each day leading up to Halloween.

October 1 actuality saw quite a few releases, most notably George A. Romero’s $100k indie Night of the Living Dead, which made a whopping $30M worldwide at the box office. Explains Wiki, Night of the Living Dead was heavily criticized at its release owing to explicit content, but eventually garnered critical acclaim and has been selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as a film deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.” It’s soaked in social commentary that’s still relevant today.

And as unbelievable as it sounds, today also marks the 40th anniversary of Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, another horror indie that broke through the Hollywood barrier. Hooper produced the film for less than $300,000 and used a cast of relatively unknown actors drawn mainly from central Texas, where the film was shot, explains Wiki. The limited budget forced Hooper to film for long hours seven days a week, so that he could finish as quickly as possible and reduce equipment rental costs. Due to the film’s violent content, Hooper struggled to find a distributor. Louis Perano of Bryanston Pictures eventually purchased the distribution rights. Hooper limited the quantity of onscreen gore in hopes of securing a ‘PG’ rating, but the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) rated it ‘R’. The film faced similar difficulties internationally.

The site also explained that, Uupon its October 1974 release, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was banned outright in several countries, and numerous theaters later stopped showing the film in response to complaints about its violence. While it initially drew a mixed reception from critics, it was enormously profitable, grossing over $30 million at the domestic box office. It has since gained a reputation as one of the best horror films in cinema history. It is credited with originating several elements common in the slasher genre, including the use of power tools as murder weapons and the characterization of the killer as a large, hulking, faceless figure. The popularity of the film led to a franchise that continued the story of Leatherface and his family through sequels, remakes, one prequel, comic books and video games.

A look through the history books also reveals that October 1 shared the release of the 1978 Patrick, which has since been remade, Magnolia Pictures’ 2009 Universal Soldier: Regeneration, Paramount Pictures’ god-awful 2009 Case 39, and even Dark Sky Films’ 2010 release of Adam Green’s Hatchet II!

If you’re looking for a way to kickoff this October in style, starting with the brand new TCM box set and NOTLD is a great place to start! Share your stories below. When was the first time you saw them all? Which is your fav?

Which is why, if you live in Los Angeles, you should head over to the New Beverly Cinema (7165 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles CA 90036) to see the continuing adventures of Laurie Strode! While it’s not quite as good as the original Halloween it has the benefit of picking up exactly where that film left off, which means no bullsh*tting around. It also has more gore courtesy of new director Rick Rosenthal and it was even written by John Carpenter and Debra Hill (even though he states he needed a 6-pack a night to make it through the process).

Bloody-Disgusting alum Brian Collins will be presenting the film as part of his Horror-Movie-A-Day screening series at the New Beverly Cinema. Tickets (which you can buy here) are only $8 – so this is a win-win scenario for you. It all goes down this Saturday, October 27th at 11:59PM. The print will be 35MM.

Head inside for a trailer and the event poster!

If you’ve never seen John Carpenter’s 1978 classic Halloween on the big screen, you just may be able to fix that problem next month. No matter where you live, apparently, since it seems to be getting a fairly wide re-release.

The official Facebook for the film says “This will be the biggest run the film has had since shocking audiences in 1978.” We’re not sure how big this means it will actually be, but hopefully it’s wide enough for you to go check out (wherever you are). Screening before the film will be Justin Beahm’s new mini-doc You Can’t Kill The Boogeyman: 35 Years Of Halloween.

Halloween Movies will soon have info regarding the release, as will we. You’ll know it as it comes in.
