In this edition of The Silver Lining, we’ll be covering Shane Black’s underappreciated 2018 sequel/reboot, The Predator.

The Predator franchise has always walked the line between action and horror, with most of the films being structured like sci-fi slashers where the victims are just badass enough to have a fighting chance. This is obviously a delicate balance, and I don’t think any of the sequels have quite managed to replicate the legendary thrills of John McTiernan’s 1987 original.

That being said, some entries have come close, and I’d go so far as to say that there’s no such thing as a truly bad Predator film. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks that way, and that’s why I’d like to talk about Shane Black’s The Predator, a controversial sequel that deserves a closer look despite its negative reputation.

Originally announced back in 2017, The Predator became a hotly anticipated blockbuster when it was revealed that Shane Black (who played Rick Hawkins in the original film while also serving as a back-up screenwriter) would be returning to both co-write and direct a high-concept sequel. Fans were even more ecstatic when it was confirmed that the film had earned a hard R from the MPAA, basically guaranteeing a bloody fun romp helmed by someone who helped to kick-start the franchise.

When the trailer dropped, it looked like the hunt was finally on for Predator fans who had been waiting for a proper adult-oriented action flick.

SO WHAT WENT WRONG?

Grossing a fair $160 million at the box office while scoring a mere 33% on Rotten Tomatoes, The Predator didn’t actually lose any money, but it was certainly a critical flop. While the film found an audience in international venues, most viewers seemed to dismiss it as a messy cash-grab with a bloated budget and barely coherent script. The flick also stirred up some controversy due to its misguided depictions of autism, not to mention the hiring (and subsequent firing) of a convicted sex offender.

Long-time fans of the series seemed to be divided by the film’s tone, which was surprisingly lighthearted and comedic despite the hard R rating. Part of this can be explained by Black’s trademark humor, but it was later confirmed that The Predator was intentionally shot in a way that would make it easy to create kid-friendly cuts for overseas audiences. This resulted in lots of easily removable digital blood splatters and plenty of jokes for padding.

Critics also pointed out that the suburban setting was a poor substitute for the dense jungles (both concrete and otherwise) of previous films in the series, and the same went for the main cast of military misfits. The actors themselves were great, but this rag-tag band of outcasts wasn’t exactly what fans of the series were expecting.

These strange creative decisions were only exacerbated by the over-expansion of Predator lore, as the film boasts yet another super-Predator with a ridiculous backstory and action sequences more reminiscent of CGI-heavy superhero flicks than the old-school thrills of John McTiernan’s film. This also leads to a couple of sci-fi excesses like the previously mentioned autism fiasco and an unexpected twist about global warming.

Of course, one of the biggest issues was how the film was clearly reshot to hell, with shifting release dates, bizarre editing and ADR indicating that this absurd story was stitched together in post-production. Judging from behind-the-scenes photos and interviews, it appears that the final act was completely reworked before release, possibly against the director’s wishes. While some have claimed that this was due to the original cut of the film being literally too dark, Shane Black has gone on record with another story. The director claims that these reshoots were actually the result of negative test audience reactions after a focus group watched a rough workprint with incomplete visual effects.

THE SILVER LINING

It’s often said that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and I guess that’s why all the things people seem to hate about The Predator are precisely what I love about it. It may not hold a candle to Arnold Schwarzenegger’s original run-in with an intergalactic hunter, but Black’s sequel has a lot of fun turning modern blockbuster tropes on their heads.

In some ways, Black’s film is more of a satire of modern action flicks than a proper Predator sequel. Knowing that the studio wouldn’t want to back a grounded horror/action hybrid like the original, the director decided to have a bit of fun with this big-budget monster flick, and I think the film’s irreverent approach is much more interesting than simply rehashing what came before.

In fact, the movie almost feels like a live-action version of one of those silly 80s cartoons that attempted to turn R-rated properties into kid-friendly toy commercials, and I mean that as a compliment. Hell, the movie even features a friendly Predator dog and an ecological message behind the action. If that doesn’t scream 80s cartoon, I don’t know what does.

I also really enjoy the creative casting here, with Black choosing to subvert the franchise’s established macho-man expectations by making our protagonists victims of warfare instead of cold-blooded killers. Having the audience care about the victims in a creature feature is incredibly difficult, and I’d say that The Predator does a great job of making you root for the humans. Boyd Holbrook is compelling enough as our protagonist, with Olivia Munn and Keegan-Michael Key standing out as memorable characters. But Thomas Jane is definitely the most entertaining as Baxley, a Marine veteran suffering from Tourette syndrome. This is a cool personal touch by the director, as Black actually suffers from this illness in real life.

Despite the messy storytelling and questionable additions to the lore, Shane Black’s The Predator remains a thoroughly entertaining entry in the franchise and isn’t afraid to poke fun at itself when things get out of hand. While I’m certainly hyped for Dan Trachtenberg’s Prey, which promises to bring the mandibled hunter back to its origins in a self-contained thriller, I still think The Predator is worth revisiting as an odd B-movie that’s just as fun as it is ridiculous.

Watching a bad movie doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad experience. Even the worst films can boast a good idea or two, and that’s why we’re trying to look on the bright side with The Silver Lining, where we shine a light on the best parts of traditionally maligned horror flicks.

The next “The Walking Dead” spinoff series from AMC is an anthology titled “Tales of the Walking Dead,” and we’ve learned this week that Olivia Munn (The Predator) has signed on.

Variety reports that Olivia Munn has joined the cast alongside Danny Ramirez (The Falcon & The Winter Soldier), Loan Chabanol (Fading Gigolo), Embeth Davidtz (Old, “Ray Donovan”) and Jessie T. Usher (Shaft, “The Boys”). “Olivia, Danny, Loan, Embeth, and Jessie are the latest massive talents that will bring new worlds of TWD to life with big, daring, different, emotional, shocking, scary, and crazy stories. We’re excited for them to come walk with us,” Scott Gimple, executive producer and chief content officer of “The Walking Dead” universe, tells the site.

The show’s six-episode first season is expected to premiere this summer. The idea here is to tell episodic original stories set within the zombie universe of “The Walking Dead.”

The show’s cast also includes Daniella Pineda, Terry Crews, Parker Posey, Jillian Bell, Anthony Edwards and Poppy Liu. Confirmed directors for the “Tales of the Walking Dead” spinoff include Haifaa al-Mansour (Good Lord Bird), Deborah Kampmeier (Star Trek: Picard), Tara Nicole Weyr (The Wilds), and Michael Satrazemis (The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead).

“Each one hour episode is set within the world of “The Walking Dead” and will feature both new and existing characters.”

Channing Powell (“The Walking Dead”) will the spinoff’s showrunner.

“This series, more than any other in the Walking Dead Universe, runs on new voices, perspectives, and ideas — bringing to life stories unlike any we’ve told before,” franchise architect Scott Gimple said. “I’m thrilled to be Channing’s consigliere, helping in every way I can to make those new visions real for the best fans in TV. I started as a fan of ‘The Walking Dead’ and have ended up as a showrunner of what will hopefully be one of its most unique spin-offs. I’m so grateful to AMC and Scott for supporting me and my writers while we pushed, pulled and poked at the boundaries of this universe to bring you something new and unexpected, while hopefully still tending to what core audiences loved so much about the flagship show.”

This will be the fourth official “The Walking Dead” series, following in the wake of the main show, “Fear the Walking Dead,” and “The Walking Dead: World Beyond.”

A spinoff centered on Daryl and Carol is also in the works.

Dark Castle Entertainment, who has been behind some great genre films over the years from 13 Ghosts to Orphan, has teamed with The Exchange (The Woman in Black) on the sci-fi action pic Replay, which will star award-winning actress Olivia Munn (The Predator, X-Men: Apocalypse), Bloody Disgusting can report.

“Deftly merging the frenetic, close-quarters action of John Wick and The Raid with the clever sci-fi storytelling of The Terminator, Replay is the story of Erin Staffer (Munn), whose husband is kidnapped and murdered,” writes the press release. “Now, armed only with illegal, bleeding-edge tech and a desperate plan, Erin must do everything in her power to change the past and save him.”

In pre-production, Replay is written and directed by Jimmy Loweree (Absense), and produced by Munn alongside Ethan Erwin and Hal Sadoff of Dark Castle Entertainment.

Robert Bell of Dark Castle is co-producing. Dark Castle is currently in post on Simon Barrett’s (V/H/S/2) directorial debut Seance starring Suki Waterhouse and The Expecting directed by Mary Harron (American Psycho) and starring AnnaSophia Robb for Quibi. “Esther”, the prequel to their hit film Orphan, begins principal photography in August with William Brent Bell helming.

On the whole, the Predator franchise has an up and down history. The original is beloved (and famous now for featuring two US governors among the cast) while the sequel has interesting ideas but problematic racial elements. Depending on your canonical preferences the AvP films are either silly fun or offensive cash grabs. Finally, 2010’s Predators attempts to reboot the whole affair, but didn’t quite work.

Which brings us to Shane Black’s attempt to give the galaxy’s most dangerous hunter a new lease on life with The Predator. The new film disavows all but the original two films to tell the story of a team of misfits who band together to tackle not just one Predator, but a new suped-up hybrid (and his Predator dogs). Oh – and there’s a Mary Sue child who is on the spectrum and Olivia Munn thrown in for good measure.

If you follow the trades, the news of reshoots, botched marketing campaigns and a recent edit to remove a convicted sexual offender friend of Black’s might sound the alarm of a troubled production. Hopeful fans need not worry too much: the final cut of the film doesn’t reflect a project in peril so much as a very traditional “by the books” Hollywood blockbuster, which in 2018 may be its own cause for alarm.

Ardent Black fans will undoubtedly find plenty to like about the new film. The Predator opens in Mexico with a botched mission that leaves skilled military sniper McKenna (Boyd Holbrook) the sole survivor and in possession of the Predator helmet and glove. The crash site is quickly swept under the rug by government scientist Traeger (Sterling K. Brown) and McKenna is set up to take the fall to ensure he remains quiet about what he saw. When his son Rory (Jacob Tremblay) activates the helmet McKenna covertly mailed home, however, it initiates a chain of events that brings Traeger, the Predator and a newly introduced bounty hunter Predator down on McKenna’s sleepy town.

Shane and co-writer Fred Dekker keep things moving along at a speedy clip, offsetting the deluge of expository dialogue with regular action sequences. Their other contribution is a boatload of supporting comedy characters in the form of McKenna’s makeshift team, which includes crass comedian Coyle (Keegan Michael-Key), Tourette’s afflicted Baxley (Thomas Jane), pilot Lynch (Alfie Allen), creepy/cute Nettles (Augusta Aguilera) and suicidal leader Nebraska (Trevante Rhodes).

These men become the mouthpiece for Black’s trademark crude and witty dialogue, which vacillates somewhere between “your mother” jokes and using the R-word to describe McKenna’s son. It’s unclear if Black and Dekker (heh heh) were aiming for 80s action movie nostalgia with their underwhelming dialogue and rah-rah machismo, but the vast majority of The Predator, unfortunately, lands uncomfortably close to dude-bro territory.

Thankfully the action makes up a lot of the shortcomings. The opening sequence is adequate, but things really get cooking when the Predator unexpectedly awakens at Traeger’s top secret Project Stargazer base. The ensuing death and destruction is glorious to behold as Black leans hardcore into his R rating and paints the white facility walls red. Later in the film, a battle at the local schoolyard finds creative ways to continually raise the stakes. By the time the action moves to a rock quarry and into the woods for the extended final battle, however, exhaustion and ennui have begun to set in. Even the wanton destruction of an entire army of red shirts can’t help to keep the film’s energy from flagging as action sequence begets action sequence endlessly.

Sadly the action alone can’t save the film. Black and Dekker pack the 2hr+ film with far too many conflicts. When the film unites the humans against the new super Predator, it works. When the focus shifts to the petty in-fighting between McKenna and Traeger or the narrative cuts back to Yvonne Strahovski’s Emily (playing McKenna’s estranged wife in a thankless role), The Predator feels clunky and ill-paced. Throw in Black’s near misogynistic use of female characters, including a completely unnecessary scene involving a naked Munn, and there’s a lot to criticize.

The Predator will undoubtedly appeal to fans of the original films, as well as purveyors of Shane Black’s oeuvre. As for whether this new film has the capacity to re-launch the franchise (which the tacked on coda clearly aims to do)? Unclear. The troubled reports from set and inevitable “bad to meh” reviews certainly won’t help recruit new audiences. But hey: at least we got Predator dogs!

As we’ve reported, Shane Black’s The Predator underwent final hour reshoots earlier this year, but as it turns out, Black tinkering with the film’s final act was only the tip of the iceberg in regards to its behind the scenes, post production issues. A report from Los Angeles Times today sheds light on a whole new issue, and it sounds like Black has some explaining to do.

According to the site, Black cast his friend Steven Wilder Striegel (47) in a brief role, “a three-page scene shared with actress Olivia Munn.” It was only after filming wrapped that Munn learned Striegel is a convicted sex offender, having plead guilty back in 2010 “after facing allegations that he attempted to lure a 14-year-old female into a sexual relationship via the internet.” In fact, it sounds like nobody was aware of Striegel’s past at the time, save for Black himself.

Last month, Munn approached 20th Century Fox with what she had learned, and to their credit, the studio swiftly edited Striegel out of the film.

As a spokesperson explained to LA Times, “Our studio was not aware of Mr. Striegel’s background when he was hired. We were not aware of his background during the casting process due to legal limitations that impede studios from running background checks on actors.”

Black and Striegel are longtime friends, and Black has also cast him in both Iron Man 3 and The Nice Guys. According to Black, he’s just been trying to “help a friend.”

“I personally chose to help a friend,” Black said in a written statement to LA Times. “I can understand others might disapprove, as his conviction was on a sensitive charge and not to be taken lightly. [Striegel was] caught up in a bad situation versus something lecherous.”

As for Munn, she notes that she found it “both surprising and unsettling that Shane Black, our director, did not share this information to the cast, crew, or Fox Studios prior to, during, or after production.” She added in her statement to LA Times, “I am relieved that when Fox finally did receive the information, the studio took appropriate action by deleting the scene featuring Wilder prior to release of the film.”

Good on you, Fox.

For more details on Striegel’s conviction, read the full piece over on LA Times.

We forget that John McTiernan’s Predator (1987) wasn’t just a balls-to-the-wall violent horror film, but it was also playful. What made the film so unforgettable was the cast of characters, all who were unique, fun and relatable. People overlook that Shane Black, who wrote and directed this month’s The Predator, also did onset rewrites while he co-starred in the original (it’s actually the main reason he was cast in the film). It’s also the reason that this new film looks whimsical, fun, and filled with banter. It’s also why the trailers and promotional materials have been so confused – does 20th Century Fox sell this as a comedy or a horror film? Within the past few weeks, they’ve found their sweet spot.

The final red band trailer delivered the bloody goods, while also looking genuinely entertaining. Now, fresh TV spots are zeroing in on Black’s sensibilities and giving us a look at just how amusing this new “team” is going to be. Check out this goldmine of a commercial…

In theaters September 14, 2018, the film stars Jacob Tremblay, Olivia Munn, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Alfie Allen and Yvonne Strahovski. Jake Busey plays the son of Gary Busey’s Predator 2 character.

In the sequel, “From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.”

Shane Black continues to tweak The Predator and one of the casualties is “Battlestar Galactica’s” Edward James Olmos, who was cut entirely out of the film. Olmos was cast in March 2017 as a military character, who most probably was part of the restructured third act in which several Predators were seen on set driving tanks.

The news of Edward James Olmos being cut from The Predator came straight from the man himself. Olmos would have played a four-star general, and he told /Film that his scenes weren’t relevant to the story. “I’m not in the show,” Olmos said, “It was too long so my character, they had to take me out. They were like half an hour, 3/4 of an hour too long. So I understand why.”

After completely refilming the third act, Black is once again set to get behind the camera for some additional photography as they tweak the film for release this coming September.

The Predator also stars Jacob Tremblay, Olivia Munn, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Alfie Allen and Yvonne Strahovski. Jake Busey plays the son of Gary Busey’s Predator 2 character.

It’s easy to panic, but there’s no reason to do so in learning that Shane Black is going back behind cameras to shoot additional photography for The Predator, which came out of the San Diego Comic-Con with strong hype.

Production Weekly lists two days of additional filming in Vancouver, which sounds like some quick pick-ups to maybe bridge scenes in the newly shot third act. Following the first test screenings, Black reworked the finale, which would lead to another series of secret screenings. They must have learned something important in doing so and are heading to Canada to make potentially make a few tweaks. You can read all about the first round of changes here, but beware of spoilers.

In theaters September 14, 2018, the film stars Jacob Tremblay, Olivia Munn, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Edward James Olmos, Alfie Allen and Yvonne Strahovski. Jake Busey plays the son of Gary Busey’s Predator 2 character.

The San Diego Comic-Con hosted a wild Hall H panel for 20th Century Fox’s The Predator yesterday, which opened with a lengthy debate that imagined scenarios where the Predator does battle with other iconic pop culture characters.

“Ripley would find a way,” said director Shane Black, while Keegan-Michael Key added, “Ripley would definitely win.” The conversation digressed even further when Wolverine and Deadpool came into the fold: “He loses to Deadpool for the same reason he loses to Wolverine,” said an energized Key, “he can strike and strike and strike and strike and they’re just gonna keep coming back. It just takes Deadpool a little longer to recover depending on the injury.”

The host took it one step further, inquiring as to how Evil Dead’s Ash would handle the alien warriors. Key quickly chimed in:

“If Ash is crafty – he’s slower than he used to be – if crafty Ash can dismember just one (Predator) arm, he’s good to go. I think Ash can win that.” He adds: “If the whole fight takes place in a creepy rundown cabin, Ash wins.”

Watch the full debate below, as well as several panel highlights we’ve uploaded for you.

Jake Busey on joining his father in the Predator franchise.

Keegan-Michael Key on watching blaxploitation movies with the cast.

Olivia Munn on her character being an instant badass.

Shane Black on the leaner and meaner approach to making The Predator, and getting revenge on mankind.

Sterling K. Brown on being the “lone wolf”.

Shane Black is a seasoned filmmaker, so it’s a bit surprising that he fell into the trap that has consumed many horror films in the past – he filmed the grand finale to The Predator during the day. AvP Galaxy pulled some pages from the latest issue of Empire Magazine, which confirms that Black not only reshot the finale, but changed the setting from day to night.  The result is night and day (sorry, I couldn’t help myself).

“The first time we shot the third act it was daytime,” Black reveals to the magazine. “It’s all this spooky stuff but then its bright sunlight. It just didn’t work. So I said ‘Ummm, can we do this again at night?'”

Not only did he change the time of day, but he moved it to the forest and made several other major changes (spoiler warning).

Black once again explains that he wanted to make the Predators scary and mysterious again, which is what gave birth to the Upgrade Predator that he says is “bigger, meaner and nasty as hell.”

He adds: “Ten feet tall and midnight black, bristling with spines, skin thickened with chitinous organic armour – the product of harvesting DNA From the deadliest creatures on every world it’s hunted. The ultimate expression of Predator dominance. It is, it’s fair to say, one giant, ugly motherfucker.”

In the film,

“From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. Empire shared a brand new look at The Predator, with a bit from director Shane Black about making the character scary again, explaining that the introduction of the Ultimate/Super-Predator was because of the challenge to “make it frightening” [again].

“’Cause upon that hinged everything — whether you bought our heroes going up against him and felt a real threat for them,” he told the site. “We had to invent a scenario in which the Predators were mysterious and scary again.”

There’s been a ton of tinkering just to hit the sweet spot, with new reports revealing massive changes to the film’s third act (beware of spoilers).

In the film,

“From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. It’s been openly reported that, after a test screening, there had been some significant reshoots on Shane Black‘s The Predator. It was alleged that the third act had been retooled, with costar Keegan-Micheal Key confirming them in an interview. Now, AvP Galaxy has all of the details, revealing major changes that include new deaths and less Predators. SPOILER WARNING.

Early photos that leaked during filming revealed (ridiculous looking) shots of “friendly” Predators riding atop an APC tank and aiming an automatic weapon. The site reports that all of the friendly Predators have been removed from the latest edit. In addition to less Predators, all of the “hybrid creatures” have been removed with the exception of the “Predator Dog”.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg. The site also reports that all death sequences involving the more prominent characters have also been completely changed and the final battle with the Upgrade Predator takes place at night in the woods. This part is wild: “After attacking the Project: Stargazer base, Upgrade gives the survivors a chance to escape before he begins to hunt them to find the best fighter amongst them.”

There are even more changes detailed, with the latest cut including additional scenes that connect The Predator to the previous films, including Alien vs. Predator. “Lex’s spear is now displayed alongside City Hunter’s spear from Predator 2. Casey, Olivia Munn’s character, is also shown some grainy pictures of the Predators from the first two films.” Jake Busey plays the son of Gary Busey’s Predator 2 character, which makes this reveal pretty interesting.

How awesome would it be to see all of the original scenes when the film is eventually released on home video? Here’s hoping…

In The Predator, a group of unsuspecting humans slowly realize that fierce hunter-aliens are in their midst, this time in a suburban setting.

20th Century Fox has been scrambling the change the narrative behind Shane Black’s The Predator after a mostly negative reaction to the film’s first trailer. After a recent TV spot sent everyone into orgasm, they’ve assembled and released a brand new trailer that’s nothing short of spectacular. I am sold.

The new footage is extraordinarily spoiler heavy, but I guess it was necessary to get many of us on board. The sequel appears to harken back to the first Predator, in which a military group is sent deep into a jungle to investigate a crash. Predator things happen before this interesting nugget of information is dropped… “Mexico”. We’re then transported to a facility in which a Predator is strapped down to a table and being experimented on. Yes, I believe The Predator is a take on the Area 51 crash in New Mexico! The trailer reveals what we’ve already known: the black ops create the “Ultimate Predator”, which is massive. There’s brand new footage of the alien beating the crap out of a “normal” Predator.

I am absolutely in love with everything in this trailer. What do you guys think?

The first trailer for Shane Black‘s The Predator now feels like a huge misdirect as it’s focused on telling us that the movie is about an alien, called to Earth by a child, looking to retrieve some sort of weapon. A new TV spot ran during the NBA Finals last night and revealed that a recent plot rumor may actually be true. It appears that the humans are going to be teaming up with a Predator in order to stop a 10-foot-tall mega-hybrid-Predator. This is weirdly similar to the introduction of the Indoraptor in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, in which the humans presumably team with a Velociraptor to stop the Indoraptor dino-hybrid. The Indoraptor and mega-Predator even look similar, as they’re both a sinister pitch black.

In the sequel, “From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Shane Black has made a name for himself by pioneering the buddy/action picture with films like Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout. His newest movie looks to expand his usual duos into a full on ensemble with The Predator. When I visited the set, the emphasis from almost all parties involved was on “character”. It’s true that for an audience to be invested in a picture, focus must be placed on our heros. If we’re not rooting for them, why should we care at all? The core group carries the telling moniker of “The Loonies”. Each member is former military coping in various degrees with PTSD and remorse from their time spent in war.

It’s clear that Black’s intention is to craft an epic thrill ride utilizing various genre motifs in a mash up straight out of the 80’s, but the groundwork for such a piece is built from the characters up. He contrasts his style to other big budget tentpole spectacles that are crammed to the brim with massive stunts:

“Our quest to be a cut above is to make it so we keep changing it up so that it feels more like a thriller and less like just action. Because action to me is not sustainable over two hours. You can like it. You can like the Transporter movies. They’re fun, but at the end you don’t feel like you’ve had an experience with a guy that you want to sit down with. You feel like you’ve watched an action character flex his muscles. Hopefully we give you a bigger canvas, more action, and better characters. That’s a big get. That’s a lot.“

Quint (Boyd Holbrook) – The Leader

Hot off his villainous role in the hit Wolverine pic, Logan, Boyd Holbrook is no stranger to big budget genre pictures. This, however, is a lead role; as Holbrook puts it, he will “carry the movie on his back.” It’s not hard to believe as the actor is pulled from the tent twice for his on set obligations during the fairly short interview. His character, Quint, is the estranged father of Rory (Jacob Tremblay). While not an OG Looney, Quint is thrust into the group and becomes their de facto leader, and he might just be the catalyst for the ensuing alien insanity. In fact, it’s hinted that Quint has a direct connection to the original film (remember that familiar jungle set I mentioned?):

“You find him doing mercenary work. Basically collecting a paycheck. You got something you need done down in Mexico. I’m your guy. So he’s estranged from his wife. He’s detached from his son. Really the heart of the story is about reconnecting and being a father, reconnecting and getting all these looney tune guys who have no direction, to give them some purpose…What is interesting, if I may say – I’ve seen something and maybe there is a familiarity or, I wouldn’t want to say he’s a UFO conspirator but he’s heard of things and seen things [from his time in Mexico]. So that’s the reference to the original. We are keeping some sort of lineage.”

Holbrook doesn’t seem interested in repeating the same types of roles from picture to picture. When opportunity knocked for him to battle against the Predator, he jumped at the chance.

“What attracted me to this, it was a completely new story…for this character, what Shane wanted to do, the higher story, is to give a complete freshness…to give it a heartbeat. Going away from the machismo, ya know, guns and guns…And, I love that film, but I think we’re setting out to do something really different.”

Coyle (Keegan-Michael Key) – The Loud Mouth

When Key stepped into the tent I was instantly taken by his presence; tall, animated, charming (I was man crushing pretty hard). “I’m the big mouth of The Loonies!” It was abundantly clear that Key was as jazzed to be on set as we were, and he was relishing the moment.

“There were certainly things that I’m not allowed to share with you that made my eyes pop out of my head…There’s always a nice, sly, meta quality [to Black’s writing]. This picture contains great referential stuff to not just the original movie, but to Predator 2 and every other movie in the franchise, the Alien vs Predator universe…The way he references the movies is very clever if you’re a huge Predator fan. I’m a HUGE fan of this universe.”

While it seems this bit of backstory might not make it to film, Key explains how his character, Coyle, and the rest of The Loonies wind up getting caught in a battle with extraterrestrial hunters. The gang meets weekly at the local VA for group therapy, and their biggest complaint is the piss poor coffee. Finally, they start a mutiny over the junky java and get themselves detained. On the bus ride to the nuthouse is where it seems the story proper begins:

“Boyd’s character just happens to be thrown on the same bus with them. So, that’s how he becomes our ad hoc leader. [Coyle] has a very jarhead mentality, ‘Well, okay, so there are aliens.’ Brbrbrbrbrbr (mimicking the sound of gunfire)…He’s never fully engaged. He’s always standing a little outside of himself, so he doesn’t have to deal with his own pain. He goes, ‘I guess we’re doing this. I guess these seven foot dreadlock dudes are real.’ He pretends like he takes it with a grain of salt..We’re all a little off. We’re not the dream team.”

Baxley (Thomas Jane) – The Loose Canon

“They’re taking us down to the, ya know, the big hospital where they’re going to lock us up for a few days for observation. That’s when Boyd gets thrown on the bus too with us, cause he’s seen an alien and they want to cover that shit up. So, Boyd and all these lunatics end up going on this adventure.”

Thomas Jane manages to provide the most succinct plot synopsis thus far with his dryly humorous delivery. Jane has gotten to play in a lot of fanboy sand boxes, and The Predator is just another in a long list that includes a Marvel movie, Stephen King adaptation, and his current Syfy series, The Expanse. As Baxley, Jane’s character is the closest with Key’s Coyle. During a friendly fire incident, Coyle made a fatal mistake that led to the death of Baxley’s troupe, ultimately leaving Baxley shell shocked and now suffering from tourettes. “I know that Shane and Keegan came up with a lot of the backstory themselves…We’ve tried to pepper that stuff, weave it into the story.” Speaking of Black and the freedom to play around outside the script:

“He creates a tone that’s very hard to do. It’s serious. The stakes are high. The people are real, yet it’s funny as fuck…He hits a bell inside of me that I really enjoy.”

Nettles (Augusto Augilera) – The Lovable One

Augusto Aguilera might not be a name you know yet, but his character of Nettles is described as the “heart” of the group. Nettles is a role that just might put the young actor on the map. Aguilera is instantly relatable and down to earth as he describes being in the unemployment office just weeks before landing the role. When asked how big a fan he is of the Predator franchise, he tells of how he and his brothers “played” Predator after having seen the original movie:

“I would be, for some reason, I was The Body, Jesse Ventura. We’d run around the house and my poor mother and father would freak out. We’d run around and shoot guns and shoot at them cause they were the alien at the time…We’d get dressed in full costume doing this, because my mom saved all of our costumes from Halloween. We’d be in full camo. We’d paint our faces…So my fandom? Out of ten? Ten.”

The character of Nettles is a bit of an outsider trying to fit in with this group of damaged tough guys. He used to fly helicopters as part of a special forces group known as The Nightstalkers. An injury from a past mission left him with TBI (traumatic brain injury). “So, I’m just a beat behind. Which is easy for me to play,” he says with a sheepish grin. On preparing to tackle the sensitive subject of TBI, Aguilera explains, “You prepare with, just trying to get kind of a sense of humanity. You don’t want to be there doing these things and the people that actually are afflicted with this, you don’t want them to feel like they’ve been spoofed…That would ruin me.”

From playing pretend soldiers as a kid, Aguilera has come full circle to playing pretend as an adult. Thankfully, this time around he got a bit more training before being sent off to faux-warfare:

“They’ve got some special forces guys here and they’ve just been, they’ve like handed us a bunch of guns and blanks, obviously, and they’ve been teaching us to do all this stuff. I’m walking around now in Vancouver thinking I’m like six feet tall. I feel like I’m so cool cause I can shoot a gun. I have no idea if I can hit a target, but I can LOOK pretty cool shooting it.”

Lynch (Alfie Allen) – The Loner

Alfie Allen is very quiet and observant. He sits before us patiently awaiting each question and providing only the few necessary words to relay his intent, nothing more. Unsurprisingly, his character, Lynch, is described as the loner of the group who tries to intimidate those around him with nothing more than a glare. Though, he apparently has one other trick up his sleeve. “He’s got a skill which is, um, sleight of hand. He uses card tricks to sort of fill his alone time, but I guess also, it’s just kind of a nervous tick.”

Allen has a bit more to say when it comes the film itself:

“It’s very real. Rather than it just sort of being ‘Hey, tough guys! This is an alien. We can deal with it!’ We’re all just really dealing with it as humans…I think it’s different from the other Predators…When I was reading the script, it immediately jumped out towards me that this is a whole different ballgame.”

Nebraska (Trevante Rhodes) – The Right Hand Man

“This is awesome. This is obviously a big difference from what I’m used to!”

Very true words, coming from Trevante Rhodes who has gone from the groundbreaking, Oscar nominated indie film, Moonlight, to the newest sci-fi/action epic in a long running franchise. Rhodes has a laid back demeanor, calm and cool as he points out that one of my fellow reporters is “cheesing” from the excitement of being on set. It’s as if this newfound celebrity hasn’t yet caught up to the hot up and comer. In the film, Rhodes takes on the role of Nebraska:

“He’s the man behind the man, in regards to Boyd Holbrook’s character. He’s kind of the guy who helps keep him on track and helps push him and everything. So, he’s kind of the leader behind the leader of this motley crew…Nebraska, he was someone who had his own special forces group, he had his own unit….he made a wrong decision and got everybody killed except for himself…

That’s something he’s still struggling with and why he’s kind of distanced himself from the world. Then he stumbles upon these people that kind of assume that same kind of family…I’ve been in the shits. I’ve lost it. Know what I mean, I have nothing left to lose. A man that has nothing left to lose will try anything twice…Obviously, we get into this world of aliens and he’s like ‘Well, what else could happen?’”

Rhodes continues to heap the resounding accolades onto Black for his ability to breathe new life into an old franchise and help root it in strong characters. “It’s exactly what you would expect from Shane Black, but obviously placed within this unique world, but with…more heart than what I’ve seen from Shane’s work before.”

Dr. Brackett (Olivia Munn) – The Brains

As the sole female lead, Olivia Munn’s Dr. Casey Brackett is far from just another “token female” or one note, super-powered badass. She’s a legitimate human being thrust into an extraordinary situation. The actress is as friendly and welcoming as she appeared to be those many moons ago on G4. She’s come a long way from co-hosting a nerd tech talk show. “My character has been on a list from the CIA because she is an evolutionary biologist, and because of her expertise…she gets called in to the labs and gets to try and offer her help — and then things happen!” she coyly ends as to avoid any spoilers.

“There’s a small scene where my character is shown pictures [of the predator] for the first time….This is like seeing God to her. This is what she’s studying, how creatures change and evolve and how it’s not scary. It‘s a very beautiful thing to see…There is an element of realizing when you’re in danger and at the same time, trying to assess. She doesn’t just jump to conclusions just because she doesn’t look like them and she isn’t speaking the same language, doesn’t mean that you shoot it right away. That’s a lesson for everyone in life.”

When asked if we might see the Predators evolve and change throughout the film, Munn gives a cheeky grin and responds, “That’s a very good question.”

Rory (Jacob Tremblay) – The Key

The ten year old boy who has been making a name for himself since the critically acclaimed role in The Room is far from your typical child actor. He’s smart as a whip and gives commanding, thoughtful performances; but unlike some Stepford-esque child actors, Tremblay is still a kid at heart who gets excited by the idea of Nerf Guns. Though, Shane Black jokingly thinks otherwise, “It’s uncanny. He’s a mutant…I’ve never seen anything like it. Like cramming Peter O’Toole into a miniature body.”

We learn that Tremblay’s character, Rory, is autistic. This leaves him with an uncanny ability to understand various languages…perhaps even that of the Predators? To prepare for the role Tremblay and Black visited various autism centers where the young actor was able to meet those living with the condition and better understand their physicality. While it may have been research for the role, in Tremblay’s words they just went “to hang out with some kids.”

While he may be too young to buy a ticket for The Predator once it’s released, they hasn’t stopped Tremblay from seeing the original film.

“It was really exciting because I saw the first movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and I loved [it] and I wanted to be him for Halloween. Plus, this is my first action movie, and I was really excited about that…When I heard I could get the part I was like, “YEAH!”

It doesn’t hurt that Tremblay, Black, and Holbrook have had what sounds like several Nerf battles at the film’s production office, but Tremblay was obviously having a blast working on this particular set. “I wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t fun.”

Just how fun is it acting against a 7 foot tall killer alien? Surely that would be terrifying for a 10 year old? Nah. Tremblay excitedly told us, “I got to fist bump him!”

Not all reshoots are bad. While Fox’s New Mutants adaptation is a complete disaster, their Shane Black-directed The Predator has been going under a series of tweaks following test screenings. To put it in perspective, even New Line Cinema’s IT had several reshoots to inject scares into the final product…

While the reshoots have been reported for a few weeks now, star Keegan-Micheal Key confirmed them in an interview with Cinemablend.

“We just finished (reshoots) last week, and just about three-quarters of the third act was rewritten. And Shane Black is… he’s just a consummate professional, and a consummate writer. He’s a wordsmith! It was a really, really exhilarating experience, and I think that he’s still one of our most vibrant writers of cinema.”

Key gushes over Black’s work (as he should), and really sells the idea that they’ve gone back to make the movie better. Test screenings are both good and bad, and can skew audiences to tell producers and/or the studio what they want to hear. It can also cause filmmakers to over-tinker with their film, while other times it’s the perfect way to find out what’s missing that could make a good movie great. I’ll always give Black the benefit of the doubt.

In The Predator, a group of unsuspecting humans slowly realize that fierce hunter-aliens are in their midst, this time in a suburban setting.

Olivia Munn, Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Edward James Olmos, Alfie Allen and Yvonne Strahovski star. Jake Busey is playing the son of Gary Busey’s Predator 2 character.

Shane Black’s The Predator arrives in theaters on September 14, 2018.

A hidden piece of news out of this past weekend’s Toy Fair in New York is that NECA has acquired the rights to 20th Century Fox’s The Predator, the Shane-Black-directed sequel to the sci-fi horror classic he co-wrote and co-starred in. The only news is that there will be a 7″ “Ultimate” figure, although there’s no word on any other variations or characters being turned into plastic. We expect more news at the San Diego Comic-Con this coming July as it sets the stage for the new September release date.

Recently on display at a licensing expo in London, 20th Century Fox displayed a striking piece of art for the film that showed lightning striking a cityscape and creating a silhouette of the title character. Now, Fox has officially released (through the Predator Fan App) the art as a really cool motion poster.

We don’t know a whole lot about Shane Black’s Predator but what we do know is that some of the film takes place in the suburbs with the centerpiece being Jacob Tremblay‘s character, who is the key to defeating the alien bounty hunters.

Just two weeks ago, star Keegan-Michael Key told EW that “if people think they’re going to see a remake of the original movie, they’re in for a surprise,” further adding that it’s “not a sequel” and that it “lives in the universe of the five films that were made.”

Co-star Olivia Munn doubles down on this, calling it a standalone film that doesn’t have to even reference the aforementioned films.

“It’s really cool because it’s a standalone,” Munn told Yahoo!, “so we have the [same] inspiration and – we’re in the world of Predator so we have all the other movies that exist in it – but we don’t need to acknowledge them.”

She adds: “It’s a really cool movie because it feels very present day, and it’s a great ensemble of really amazing, funny comedic actors too.”

Boyd Holbrook, Edward James Olmos, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Alfie Allen, and Yvonne Strahovski also all star. Guess who else?  It’s already been revealed that Jake Busey is playing the son of Gary Busey’s Predator 2 character in the film opening in theaters August 3, 2018. So, there is going to be some crossover and there won’t be any erasing of the former films, which Munn confirms: “No. No, we’re not erasing [the films]. We just kind of kick it up another level.”

If you were worried that the Predators would be CGI, Munn puts that to bed when talking about coming face-to-face with the animatronic puppet for the very first time: “It’s not animated or in CGI, it’s right there,” explained Munn who called her first encounter “jarring.”

The movie once again features a group of unsuspecting humans who slowly realize that fierce hunter-aliens are in their midst, this time in what could be a suburban setting.

Is Shane Black‘s The Predator a remake, reboot, sequel or spinoff to Predator? Are you guys sick of all of the conflicting reports yet? Well, here’s one that will scramble your brain even more.

Star Keegan-Michael Key shares his perspective in an interview over at EW:

“Predator was a real privilege to do, and if people think they’re going to see a remake of the original movie, they’re in for a surprise. A very pleasant surprise. It’s not a sequel. [It has] lots of elements of humor. It certainly lives in the universe of the five films that were made. I think that’s probably the best way to say it and the only way I can say it right now.”

It’s not a remake and it’s not a sequel but it lives within the Predator universe, which can only mean one thing: it’s a new story that quite possibly references the original 1987 movie. This isn’t much of a surprise as this has become the new directive over the past few years in avoiding the stigma in “remaking” a franchise. In fact, it’s already been revealed that Jake Busey is playing the son of Gary Busey’s Predator 2 character in the film opening in theaters August 3, 2018.

The movie once again features a group of unsuspecting humans who slowly realize that fierce hunter-aliens are in their midst, this time in what could be a suburban setting.

Boyd Holbrook, Jacob Tremblay, Olivia Munn, Keegan-Michael Key, Edward James Olmos, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Alfie Allen, Yvonne Strahovski all star.

“You are one ugly motherfucker.” – Major Dutch Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger)

This is one of the best lines in Predator, which is getting a “reboot” of sorts, although it should still be canon. Art spotted at the ongoing Licensing Expo teases a line in Shane Black’s The Predator, which harks back to John McTiernan’s 1987 sci-fi horror classic.

“You are one beautiful motherfucker,” the banner teases.

The quote comes from Casey Bracket, Olivia Munn‘s character in the new film. Casey is a scientist, who battles the alien species opposite Boyd Holbrook’s Special Forces commando.

The full cast includes Edward James Olmosich, Boyd Holbrook, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, Yvonne Strahovski and Olivia Munn. Jake Busey also has a role, following in his father’s footsteps.

The movie once again features unsuspecting humans who slowly realize that fierce hunter-aliens are in their midst, this time in what could be a suburban setting.

Black is directing from a script he co-wrote with Fred Dekker. Fox will hunt The Predator on August 3, 2018.

Shane Black’s battle with The Predator just got significantly delayed. Twentieth Century Fox has shifted the release from its February 2018 slot all the way to August 3, 2018, a half year later than originally slated. An early August slot is a confident one, pulling it out of late winter release and putting it at the tail end of summer blockbusters. Many films perform well in August, implying this is a potential confidence booster.

Edward James Olmos recently joined the Predator cast, which includes Boyd Holbrook, Room breakout Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Trevante Rhodes, Thomas Jane, Alfie Allen, Yvonne Strahovski and Olivia Munn. Jake Busey also has a role, following in his father’s footsteps.

The movie once again features unsuspecting humans who slowly realize that fierce hunter-aliens are in their midst, this time in what could be a suburban setting.

Black is directing from a script he co-wrote with Fred Dekker. Production is underway in Vancouver, Canad as of this writing.

Augusto Aguilera has landed the final main role in 20th Century Fox’s reboot The Predator, which Shane Black is directing from a script he co-wrote with Fred Dekker, Deadline reported this past weekend.

Aguilera (Chasing Life) is the final piece of the the alien-hunter team alongside Sterling K. Brown, Trevante Rhodes, Boyd Holbrook, Jacob Tremblay, Olivia Munn and Keegan-Michael Key.

Yvonne Strahovski was cast as the mother to Jacob Tremblay’s character, a troubled young boy who is accidentally drawn into the conflict with the fierce alien creatures by her ex-husband, played by Boyd Holbrook.

The plot is under wraps but the film is now being said to be part of the original franchise that began with 1987’s Predator. Black has discounted this, in addition to the suburban setting, although early casting sheets argue against him. It’ll be interesting to see what we learn once Fox releases the film’s early synopsis.

Aguilera’s recent credits include the Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s Hulu pilot “Citizen”, “Ice” for Antoine Fuqua and John Singleton’s FX pilot “Snowfall”.

Production began last month on The Predator and Fox has already staked out a February 9, 2018 release date.

Allen will play an ex-Marine who teams with several other outsiders, including one played by Holbrook, to stop the human-hunting creatures in a setting that hasn’t been seen in a Predator movie: suburbia.

Yes, it’s continually being reported that the film carries a suburban setting, even though Black says otherwise. It’s possible the casting breakdowns are fake, just to throw writers like myself off. That would be A+

Hopefully some new plot details will be shared by Fox as filming is currently underway for a release on February 9, 2018.

The Predator may have met its match.

Shane Black’s reboot of Predator has made room for Jacob Tremblay, who broke through with his performance in the Oscar-winning drama Room, reports THR.

Tremblay, who also stars in Mike Flanagan’s long-delayed Before I Wake, plays the son of Boyd Holbrook’s character, who is an ex-Marine.

It was debunked recently that the story sees the popular stalker alien, first seen in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger pic titled simply Predator, in an environment that audiences have not seen: the suburbs. Nobody knows exactly what the sequel is about, although Schwarzenegger is rumored to return to his role.

Holbrook is heading a cast that so far includes Sterling K. Brown, Keegan-Michael Key, Trevante Rhodes and Olivia Munn. Thomas Jane, who stars with Tremblay in Before I Wake, is in negotiations to join the cast.

Black co-wrote the script with Fred Dekker and is directing.

Twentieth Century Fox’s reboot of the sci-fi action franchise plans to film in Vancouver this coming February with a release date set for February 9th, 2018.

What sets Predator apart from all movies is its ensemble. It’s hard to predict just how well a bunch of superstars will mesh on screen, which is why is rarely works. But it’s nice to see effort. Shane Black is a writer-director I trust without question, and know that he’s probably making the right decisions. His casting has been unique, to say the least, with today’s announcement taking it to another level.

Keegan-Michael Key of “Key and Peele” fame is going to hunt The Predator alongside Moonlight‘s Trevante Rhodes, Boyd Holbrook and Olivia Munn (X-Men: Age of Apocalypse).

His role hasn’t been disclosed, although it was revealed yesterday that the story sees the popular stalker alien, first seen in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger pic titled simply Predator, in an environment that audiences have not seen: the suburbs.

Keegan-Michael Key is the perfect addition to the ensemble. His comedic range is off the charts and can appeal to so many different audiences.

Black is directing the project and wrote the script with Fred Dekker. A shooting start later this winter is being planned.

Sorry, no Predators in swimming pools.

We know you’re as hungry as we are for any and all new information about Shane Black’s upcoming sequel The Predator, which thus far boasts a cast including Olivia Munn and Boyd Holbrook. What we’ve got for you today is a piece of news that refutes another recent piece of news: contrary to a report published by THR last week, the new film will NOT be set in the ‘burbs.

Black himself reached out to Collider over the weekend to debunk the scoop, telling the site to not expect to see wacky visuals like “Predator lurking in rich, fancy swimming pools.”

Bummer. That could’ve been fun!

Munn will be playing a scientist opposite Holbrook’s Special Forces commando.

I was a huge “X-Men” fan growing up, and wanted to badly to love the movies. But I didn’t. In fact, I hated them all – at least until Fox reinvented the franchise with X-Men: First Class. I was sure that was going to be a wonderful moment in time that could never be replicated again, especially since Bryan Singer took over as director. But then, they shocked me again with their adaptation of X-Men: Days of the Future Past, which may just be even better than First Class. With that, I’m now over the moon in anticipation for Singer’s X-Men Apocalypse, in theaters May 27th, 2016 with Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Olivia Munn, Rose Byrne, Ben Hardy, Lucas Till, and Oscar Isaac all starring.

Singer has been having a lot of fun with his social followers, and being that we pretty much already know what the characters look like, has been sharing tons of behind-the-scenes goodies from concept art to on-set stills.

This morning he dropped a bomb, sharing our first ever look at Let Me In and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘s Kodi Smit-McPhee as the legendary Nightcrawler! He replaces Alan Cumming as a younger version of the blue spawn of Mystique and Azazel, and looks surprisingly similar. In my opinion, Cumming was a phenomenal Nightcrawler and easily one of the best characters in the initial trilogy. I’m truly excited to see this character return.

Other young mutants being re-introduced are Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, and Alexandra Shipp as Storm.

Will we see Cable? Rob Liefeld says “No,” and that sucks.

BAMF! Guess who? #Nightcrawler #XMenApocalypse

Olivia Munn has been cast as Psylocke in Bryan Singer’s forthcoming X-Men Apocalypse, Singer revealed on Instagram.

Psylocke (Betsy Braddock) was created by writer Chris Claremont and artist Herb Trimpe in 1976, she first appeared in the Marvel UK series Captain Britain. Betsy was initially a supporting character in the adventures of her twin brother, Captain Britain, even briefly substituting for him in the role, before becoming the mutant superheroine and X-Men member Psylocke in 1986.

Originally presented as a precognitive in the pages of Captain Britain and then as a telepath, the character eventually acquired the body, skills and elements of personality of a Japanese female ninja known as Kwannon. Later, Psylocke somehow acquired the telekinesis of Jean Grey.

This fantastic news shows Singer’s superhero sequel will be jammed packed with new mutants.

X-Men Apocalypse hits May 27, 2016 and is directed by Bryan Singer and stars newcomers Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Oscar Isaac as En Sabah Nur / Apocalypse, Ben Hardy as Warren Worthington III / Angel, Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers / Cyclops, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler, Alexandra Shipp as Ororo Munroe / Storm, Lana Condor as Jubilation Lee / Jubilee.

Aw c’mon, guys, it wasn’t that bad.

While I admit that Scott Derrickson’s Deliver Us From Evil failed to pack the punch I was hoping for, I’m gobsmacked over the amount of flak it’s getting from critics. The film currently has a 32 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which bums me out because I feel that although it might not be successful on all fronts, the film is admirable as hell for trying to do something different within the constraints of the exorcism genre. In this article I wanna address some of the arguments critics have made against the film.

(spoilers follow, duh)

As a recovering Catholic, the use of demonic elements will always give me the willies. It never fails. Even though I don’t believe in a Devil, the fear of one is so ingrained in me that exorcism films (even shitty ones like The Devil Inside) will affect me at least a little. What makes Deliver Us From Evil more effective than others is that Derrickson (along with his co-writer Paul Harris Boardman) grounds the supernatural elements strongly in reality. Horror-procedural hybrids have been done before (Angel Heart comes to mind), but this is the first time I can remember recently where one took its supernatural elements so damn seriously. And not since The Exorcist back in 1973 has a possession film felt so much like it existed in the real world. Maybe The Entity, but that was more demonic molestation.

Derrickson has stated in interviews that he is in fact a man of faith, which definitely comes through in this film. Not just because of that preachy bit at the end at Sarchie’s kid’s baptism, but because of the consistently solemn tone in regards to the spiritual battle between good and evil Sarchie and Mendoza embark on. It’s way more absorbing and wholehearted than an exorcism movie needs to be.

Some of the negative reviews I’ve read of the film call its story disjointed and incohesive. That’s an argument I really don’t understand. At first it may feel like Sarchie and his partner Butler are aimlessly driving around the Bronx, taking random calls, but quickly it becomes apparent that it’s all a thread leading up to Sarchie’s spiritual journey. The dead baby in the alley, the domestic dispute, the infant-throwing at the zoo – it’s all connected to help Sarchie come to terms with the “true evil” Mendoza speaks of. Sarchie’s seen so much horrible shit in the “sewer” (as he refers to his job) that it reinforces Mendoza’s argument. He goes from disbelieving in God because of the shit he’s seen to recognizing it all as a sign of true evil. And it all really feels organic thanks in part to Eric Bana’s solid performance (despite that sketchy NY accent).

I’ve also heard critics bitch about the pace, that it takes too long to really have any thrust. This I disagree with too. The story is structured like a police procedural, so it purposefully lacks that aggressive pace in the beginning. We’ve seen the trailer, poster, commercials, etc., so we know what’s going on. Sarchie doesn’t so he’s got to use his detective skills and Popeye muscles to figure shit out. It’s a really interesting way to tell an exorcism story, much more compelling than someone getting possessed, then exorcised, roll credits. One critic I read even complained that the exorcism takes place at the end of the film. Say whaaa? That’s when it goes down in pretty much all of the exorcism films I’ve ever seen, so unless they’re complaining about it being a cliche, I really don’t get it.

Another common complaint was funny man Joel McHale playing a jacked up knife-enthusiast cop “adrenaline junkie.” Okay, with you on this one. It’s really tough to see past McHale, the sarcastic, dry-witted comedian that he is. I didn’t buy him at times either. There’s no denying the bro chemistry between him and Bana on screen though. They were entirely believable as partners, guys who have probably been driving around at night for years, using humor to cope with the sick side of humanity they witness every shift. During his brawl with Santino in the stairwell is the only time I could see past McHale and felt like I was watching the character of Butler. Once he realizes he can’t win, there was some goddamn conviction in McHale’s performance. I felt sorry for the macho bastard.

The one major complaint I wholeheartedly agree with is the use of The Doors as a major plot point. It would’ve been fine to bring up once or twice to help Sarchie connect the case of Jane to the others, but using it during the climactic exorcism scene was miserable. Once Jim Morrison’s heroin-fueled voice rang out, it totally broke the thick supernatural feel of the moment. Speaking of the exorcism scene, holy crap. That was a helluva process. I love that there were stages to it and that both Sarchie and the demon-fighting veteran Mendoza slipped during the incident, almost falling prey to Santino’s manipulation.

People bitched about Olivia Munn too and while I agree she’s not the greatest actress, she wasn’t given all that much to do.

Yes, Deliver Us From Evil is filled with cliches and elements we’ve seen countless times in exorcism and cop films, but Derrickson presents them a truly refreshing and serious way. Even the impossibly tired “your job is consuming your life and your ignoring your family and by the way I’m pregant” trope that seemingly every big screen detective goes through feels imaginative here against the backdrop of the supernatural. Before completely dismissing it based on the wave of negative reviews, I suggest checking it out. Exorcism films with big releases have been pretty lame lately (The Devil Inside, Devil’s Due), but Deliver Us From Evil is definitely a fresh and compelling take with atmosphere so thick you could cut it with a spoon.

Writer/director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister) sees his new, ambitious horror film Deliver Us From Evil hit theaters tomorrow, July 2nd. The film stars Eric Bana, Joel McHale, Olivia Munn, Edgar Ramirez and Sean Harris.

By the time I saw Deliver Us From Evil it had been almost a year since I visited the set of the film. And… without getting into a review (still working on that one), I was mixed. There’s a whole lot to like about the film and I think Derrickson takes some interesting risks, but it didn’t click for me 100% right away. I say this not to steer you away from the movie (I think most of you guys will really like it), but to give you some context for the following interview, because it starts out with a conversation I wasn’t expecting to have.

Derrickson had heard that I was mixed on the film, and he brought it up. I don’t think he jumped on the phone expecting to have this conversation either, it just kind of came about organically. What follows is easily one of the most frank interviews I’ve ever conducted, and therefore one of my favorites. In the interest of full disclosure I should note that Derrickson and I are on friendly terms. We don’t hang out socially, but we occasionally discuss books and movies via email and this conversation actually felt a little bit like an extension of that.

Check it out below. There are some slight spoilers.
1175917 - DELIVER US FROM EVIL

I’m having kind of a Scott Derrickson week actually. I just watched Devil’s Knot on Netflix.

How was that?

I liked it.

So you liked Devil’s Knot and not Deliver Us From Evil?

What do you mean?

I had heard that you’re not a big fan of Deliver Us From Evil.

There’s a lot about it that I like. And I certainly respect it because I know what your intentions were with it. There are just some elements that didn’t work for me.

Believe me, I don’t mean to put you on the spot. I am plenty comfortable with this conversation. This is what we do. Those of us who talk online about movies, this is what we do.

My issues, and this is still a movie I support, are with some exposition and tonal stuff. The Doors thing at the end threw me a bit, even though you were building to it in the rest of the film.

Are you talking about in the exorcism?

Yes.

I almost pulled that out. It’s in there for a very short amount of time. So far everyone seems to like all the Doors stuff but, for whatever it’s worth, that’s something that the test screenings proved people genuinely liked. So I left it in. But I also had mixed feelings about it.

I do like the “People Are Strange” moment in the hallway quite a bit.

That’s my favorite use of it. That’s the one I was the most protective of. That and the end credits.

It’s the kind of movie that’s super ambitious and I may need to see it again before I can soak it all in.

I think the thing I would say about it, and this is a good jumping off point for the discussion – and this is where I’ll disagree with you – is that it definitely achieves what I was going for. You might not like the target, but I hit the target I was aiming for. When I got into the process of working on this and working on the script with Bruckheimer and coming back to it after several years of being away from it, what became interesting to me was taking a little bit of the kitchen sink mentality. Maybe this is a movie where I can not only cross genres between a police procedural and a horror film, which is the obvious part, but also imbue it with some real action, like the knife fighting. And some real humor. And a 4 minute dialogue conversation about God in a bar between a priest and a cop.

Which I quite liked.

That was the goal. And to do it all in a sort of glossy Bruckheimer date movie kind of way. It’s certainly intended to be a much louder, faster and thrilling kind of horror film than something like Sinister, which is a much more quiet, artful introspective movie.

Absolutely. And before we go further I should note that some of the contrast between my opinions on Devil’s Knot and Deliver is due to expectation. Devil’s Knot is a quiet movie I caught up with on Netflix, whereas Deliver Us From Evil is something I’ve been thinking about since I visited the set a year ago.

Isn’t that the way it is? If only all movies were seen within a certain context.

I didn’t expect for the conversation to start out like this.

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to catch you off guard. I got emailed a thing this morning that had different reactions and I read through them. Because we’re friends and have a history, it doesn’t bother me at all.

Oh so you read the brief thing I sent to Sony after the screening. That had some good stuff in it too.

Yeah.
deliver-us-from-evil-gore-5

One of the things I liked was the imagery. Like Sinister, there’s some really striking stuff. Like that shot of Sean at the zoo, and keeping him almost a silent presence through the rest of the film.

A lot of that was designed after Sean had come over from the UK. Casting Sean Harris was probably the best bit of casting I’ve ever done because I cast him without reading him and I cast him off of Harry Brown. And I just knew the guy could do it. And boy does he just deliver in the exorcism scene. The look of him was really just based off of meeting him and seeing up close the angularity of his face and the intensity of who he is. And conceptually, with the character, one of the reasons I was interested in doing the movie is that I was fascinated with the idea of having a character where it’s not the typical possession movie where you have the girl in the bedroom. Where weird paranormal things happen and she gets freakier and twistier. It wasn’t that. It was this man who is calculated and dangerous and lethal. And so, starting with the face paint in Iraq, Sean and I talked about the idea that he was still painting it. That the paint was almost blending with his face.

I had written in the script for him to have body paint when he’s shirtless. And Sean was like, “what if he’s cut himself up?” And I said, “what if he’s carved all of the runes into his body?” And little did we know that was going to be 245 prosthetics. But we just went and did it.

The Bruckheimer element really sticks out to me. I was curious to see how his influence would play beyond protecting you from the studio, but I could feel a stylistic presence as well. To me a lot of the car stuff, a lot of the transitions and a lot of the energy in the first act feel like a Bruckheimer film.

Everything you said, and I’m not just being flattering, is incredibly incisive. Because the things that you name are exactly the things that he really focussed on in the making of and the editing of the movie. The car scenes, the transitions. The speed of the first act, the speed with which you get into the story – that was all incredibly important to him. His quality control is focused on the director of photography, the costume designer, the art director… he was so deeply committed to vetting those people and getting the best ones possible for the budget. The movie’s only like $18million below the line. It feels bigger than it is. But he approached it like he does all of his movies. And I wanted it that way. Because it has all of the horror and suspense and action, I wanted it to have kind of a glossy feel to play off the gritty qualities of the Bronx. That was something we talked about specifically and we definitely achieved it.

I haven’t read “Beware The Night” yet, but I have to imagine the specifics of this film are not present in Sarchie’s book. The Iraq stuff and this particular demon.

It’s all a fictional narrative used to tie together certain mood pieces from his book.

Was that added in your pass on the script?

You know it was actually David Ayer who came up with the Iraq stuff. David Ayer did the first rewrite after my draft in 2003 or 2004. Then there were three writers and a dozen or so drafts over the next 7 or 8 years. Then I came back and read all of those drafts and the Iraq opening was one of the few things that I kept. I thought it was an interesting way to justify the origin of this demonic presence.

It’s a nice tie to The Exorcist in a lot of ways.

Totally. Some people, Jerry included, were a little nervous that it was too direct. People will get it. And Iraq means something different now. This isn’t an excavation, this is an invaded country.

There’s so much going on in the exorcism scene, how did you construct it?

It was very difficult because we were in such a tight space and there were all of these beats we had to get through. We had to control the escalation and pacing of it. The idea was always to make it kind of a boxing arena where these three thoroughbred actors could unleash and do what they do best. I think the big surprise of it was Sean Harris. From the night that we shot the stigmata scene all the way through to him speaking all of those Spanish lines, the guy literally went into a trance. He went into a weird trance state and he was not himself. He was retching between takes and he very was sleep deprived. It was scary. What he was playing was scary, even though he was dying the lines it was really weird. When they were taking off his prosthetics he was speaking in tongues and freaking out the makeup guys. I had them take him home and he fell asleep and, the next morning, he didn’t remember shooting the scene.

I first caught up wit him during my set visit for the film, but it was nice being able to chat with him after seeing the final product. We discussed the darkness of the script, what it’s like playing a real guy and just how much certain elements of this film feel like a Jerry Bruckheimer movie.

Check it out below! While you’re at it you can catch up with my Olivia Munn, Edgar Ramirez and Joel McHale interviews.

Writer/director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister) sees his new, ambitious horror film Deliver Us From Evil hit theaters on July 2nd. When the film’s casting was announced, the presence of Joel McHale (The Informant, “Community”) wasn’t something I was expecting but he actually adds a lot to the film in a way that feels more organic than you might expect.

If you look back at my set visit, you’ll see that I was caught off guard by his take on Butler, a ripped knife wielding cop. There’s more to his character than that though. A lot of people will be surprised by just how much a lot of Deliver Us From Evil feels like a Jerry Bruckheimer film (in a good way), and McHale fits right in to the slightly malevolent buddy cop atmosphere.

He didn’t happen to be shooting on the say of my set visit, but he’s an integral part of the film. His character, Mendoza, represents one half of the dialogue that the film is ultimately about and there’s a lot in his performance that embodies the film’s spirit.

While I was able to speak with most of the film’s leads during my set visit, Olivia Munn (“The Newsroom”, Magic Mike) didn’t happen to be shooting that day. So I was definitely excited to speak with her about the film for the first time last weekend in Los Angeles.

Munn is quote good in the film, taking on the type role that a lot of other movies and actresses have reduced to one dimension and creating a full-fledged character out if it.
