The video features narrative designer Pinki Li and artist Daniel Beaulieu on the creation of Mesa, the A.I. at the center of Prove You’re Human. What served as their inspiration? How did they animate the distinctive look of her face? How did they integrate the writing, animation, and programming to bring Mesa to life…all to task players with dispelling her of these illusions?

Producer and actor Nhi Do (voice of Watcher in 1000xRESIST) spotlighted her Vietnamese background as a first-generation Canadian immigrant, illuminating the intertwining influences that shape Prove You’re Human’s themes of identity, family, and environmental effects.

“Prove You’re Human asks players to split in two, to handle both physical and digital duties,” says Remy Siu, Founder of sunset visitor 斜陽過客. “This duality is echoed throughout the game, but also drives our approach to development. Our team is made up of artists in all their forms: dancers, musicians, filmmakers,, and more. We explore them all as expressions of our own lived experiences to create a real human connection between our realities, and celebrate the differences bridging us together.”

Prove You’re Human splits the main character in two, and you drew the short straw. You’re the digital copy of a person who was paid to test a corporate product. But the product is convinced it’s as human as you are. Maybe even more. You’re trying to dispel that dream.

As a result, you’ll spend your days in a virtual world, learning more about Mesa, break her defenses, and eliminate her delusions. At the same time, you’ll keep tabs on your corporeal body, who will spend her days living the life you’ve always dreamed of in the outside world. At the end of the program, you must decide if you’d like to re-merge your two selves, or discard your work self.

“We’re always trying to lean into our strengths and locality,” says Remy Siu, Founder of sunset visitor 斜陽過客. “In Prove You’re Human, we’re very intentionally weaving real-world footage into our virtual landscape. Vancouver is a well-known film town. We’re accessing that infrastructure, along with our long-time collaborators, to bring a sense of tactility to human forms in the game.”
