The second season of HBO Max‘s Ridley Scott-produced series “Raised by Wolves” premiered back in February, and we’ve learned the sad news that it’ll be the show’s final season.

“While we are not proceeding with a third season of Raised by Wolves, we are beyond grateful to the stellar cast and crew, our creators Aaron Guzikowski, Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker, and the entire team at Scott Free Productions, for their beautiful artistry and unique ability to immerse fans into the world of Kepler-22b,” HBO Max said in a statement to Variety.

Variety details, “Originally ordered to series at WarnerMedia-owned cable channel TNT in 2018 before landing at HBO Max ahead of its series premiere in September 2020, the sci-fi drama centers on two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious virgin planet. As the burgeoning colony of humans threatens to be torn apart by religious differences, the androids learn that controlling the beliefs of humans is a treacherous and difficult task.”

“Raised by Wolves” starred Amanda Collin as Mother, Abubakar Salim as Father, Travis Fimmel as Marcus, Niamh Algar as Sue and Kim Engelbrecht as Decima.

The series was created by Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners).

Guillermo del Toro‘s Nightmare Alley only managed to pull in $15 million worldwide during its box office run, but have no fear, because the movie is now streaming on HBO Max!

Those who missed del Toro’s Nightmare Alley in theaters can stream it on HBO Max right now, and that’s just the beginning of this week’s brand new horror/genre offerings.

Here’s all the new horror releasing between February 1-6, 2022.

nightmare alley streaming hulu

Guillermo del Toro’s Nightmare Alley is actually streaming on both HBO Max and Hulu as of today, February 1st, and those are the only two places you’ll find it right now.

Meagan wrote in her review for BD, “Nightmare Alley offers psychological thrills in a profoundly haunting and intricately woven rumination on society’s dark underbelly, on the pursuit of success and damnation that might lurk at the end.” Meagan goes on to write, “It’s not the filmmaker’s strongest effort, yet it’s still a soaring spectacle that casts a spell.”

In the star-studded film… “An ambitious young carny (Bradley Cooper) with a talent for manipulating people with a few well-chosen words hooks up with a female psychiatrist (Cate Blanchett) who is even more dangerous than he is.”

Netflix’s supernatural superhero series “Raising Dion” returns for its second season today, with all of the brand new episodes now streaming exclusively through Netflix.

“Raising Dion” follows the story of Nicole (Alisha Wainwright) and her son Dion (Ja’Siah Young) after Dion starts to manifest several mysterious, superhero-like abilities. Two years after defeating the Crooked Man (Jason Ritter), Season Two follows Dion as he continues honing his powers with the support of his mom and Tevin (Rome Flynn), his Biona trainer who catches Nicole’s eye. After befriending new student Brayden (Griffin Robert Faulkner) – a fellow powered kid – a series of alarming events unfold, and Dion learns that danger is still looming.

“Navigating twists, turns, and surprise visitors, Dion and Nicole must prevail again — not just to save themselves, but the entire city of Atlanta.”

The Ridley Scott-produced sci-fi series “Raised by Wolves” also returns this week, with the show’s hotly anticipated second season premiering on Thursday, February 3.

In season two, “Android partners Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim), along with their brood of six human children, join a newly formed atheistic colony in Kepler 22 b’s mysterious tropical zone.

“But navigating this strange new society is only the start of their troubles as Mother’s “natural child” threatens to drive what little remains of the human race to extinction.”

You’ll find the new season only over on HBO Max this Thursday.

David Arquette and Angela Bettis star in new indie horror-western Ghosts of the Ozarks, which is coming to select theaters, on demand and digital Thursday, February 3.

Here’s the plot synopsis: “In post-Civil War Arkansas, a young doctor is mysteriously summoned to a remote town in the Ozarks only to discover that the utopian paradise is filled with secrets and surrounded by a menacing, supernatural presence.”

You can preview the XYZ Films horror-western below.

The star of Rob Zombie’s Halloween movies, Scout Taylor-Compton continues exploring the darkest corners of the horror genre in The Long Night, a new movie on the way this week.

Well Go USA brings the film to select theaters and digital on Friday, February 4.

“The film follows a devoted couple whose quiet weekend takes a bizarre turn when a nightmarish cult and their maniacal leader come to fulfill an apocalyptic prophecy.”

Kerry Bellessa, director of the under-the-radar indie Amber Alert, is back with his next horror offering this Friday, a psychological terror tale that looks like Event Horizon on a boat.

In Immanence, “After witnessing various impossible phenomena, the team becomes convinced that something is trying to communicate with them. Aboard their boat is Jonah (Michael Beach), a loner with a mysterious past and cryptic motives. His faith leads him to suggest that this communication may be a manifestation of divinity, a hypothesis which the scientists immediately reject. Soon the communications go from inexplicable to terrifying, threatening not only the team’s beliefs, but also their lives. When chaos culminates in an ominous revelation that makes everyone a threat, the team must fight for both their sanity and survival.”

Michael Beach, Summer Bellessa, Anthony Ruivivar, Eugene Byrd, Jamie McShane, and Asenneth del Toro star in Immanence, which was written by Bellessa and Joshua Oram.

No matter how the year panned out, at least horror was bountiful. Just a precursory glance at the most notable genre series that released in 2020 indicates an overwhelming selection.

Spread across multiple platforms and streaming services, the sheer content available meant a staggering number of brand-new series, limited runs, returning favorites, and shows that were canceled before they could even find their footing in the vast sea of competition.

Here’s the densely packed 2020 television slate in review.

The Discoveries

This section belongs to series that premiered in late 2019 and found renewed interest on streaming, or they spread by prolonged word of mouth.

Evil (CBS)

The 13-episode inaugural season of this CBS show premiered in September 2019 and ended in late January. Evil received a home release in June, but its Netflix drop in October generated the most buzz. The series follows a skeptical psychologist (Katja Herbers) enlisted by a priest-in-training (Mike Colter) and his tech specialist (Aasif Mandvi) to investigate miracles, possessions, and extraordinary cases. What makes Evil so special is its unique ability to dramatically shift between tones, from absurdist humor to genuine scares, with organic ease. Also impressive is how the series incorporates technology and psychology to cover all aspects of the supernatural. Of course, the creature/demon design is a significant plus.

Servant (Apple+)

Like Evil, Servant premiered in late 2019 and wrapped up its first season in January, leaving viewers desperate for more. Created by Tony Basgallop and executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan, Servant follows Philadelphia couple Dorothy and Sean Turner (Lauren Ambrose and Toby Kebbell) mourning the tragic loss of their infant. Dorothy’s profound denial results in her belief that her reborn doll is real, and the couple hires new nanny Leanne (Nell Tiger Free) to care for it. There’s something extraordinary about Leanne, however, and their lives will never be the same. A psychological horror that keeps its secrets close to its vest, Servant’s distinct atmospheric style will keep you hooked—season two, rumored to lean harder into the supernatural, premieres on January 15, 2021.

Gone Too Soon

The graveyard of fallen shows that received cancellations after their season run this year, many of which still cut deep. Consider this section a celebration of these genre series and a reminder to support your faves while it counts the most.

I Am Not Okay with This (Netflix)

This short 7-episode series premiered on Netflix in February and was the first of the year to explore the coming-of-age tale through exploding teens. Sophia Lillis starred as Sydney, a teenage girl navigating the trials and tribulations of high school while dealing with her family’s complexities, her budding sexuality, and mysterious superpowers just beginning to awaken deep within her. As heartfelt as it is bloody, with a fantastic supporting performance by Wyatt Oleff, I Am Not Okay with This was a critical darling and worthwhile adaptation of a YA novel. What was a shoo-in for renewal instead became a severe casualty of the pandemic.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (Showtime)

Four years after Penny Dreadful’s far-too-soon wrap-up, creator Josh Logan introduced a spin-off set in 1938 Los Angeles. Detective Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) and his partner Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) become embroiled in a gruesome murder case that serves as the connective tissue to a broader tale of history, social issues, and Mexican-American folklore. Despite familiar faces from the original series and a new, complicated set of supernatural characters, City of Angels failed to resonate and received a cancellation after its 10-episode run.

Helstrom (Hulu)

This standalone Marvel series followed Daimon and Ana Helston (Tom Austen and Sydney Lemmon), two estranged siblings with unique gifts. Through very different means, the pair tracks down humanity’s worst while trying to solve the broken family’s demonic mysteries. The 10-episode inaugural season failed to impress critics, though it did land with viewers- just not enough to earn a second season renewal in a year where the competition was fierce.

NOS4A2 (AMC)

Series creator Jami O’Brien expanded upon Joe Hill’s novel for season two in a big way, opening up the world of inscapes to introduce more characters and superpowers. The second season also expanded upon Charlie Manx’s (Zachary Quinto) backstory and his history with daughter Millie (Mattea Conforti), while continuing his battle with protagonist Vic McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings) and her family. The good news is that the season successfully wrapped up the story arc from the novel. The bad news is that we’ll miss out on future visits with Christmasland and creepy new villains of the inscape world due to cancellation.

The Outsider (HBO)

An adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, The Outsider followed the investigation of a boy’s gruesome murder in the Georgia woods and the mysterious force surrounding the case. The 10-episode series was a major hit with critics and viewers and boasted an impressive cast led by Ben Mendelsohn, Cynthia Erivo, and Jason Bateman. The Outsider originated as a limited series adaptation. While HBO bought and launched it as a drama series, the network ultimately decided to keep it as a limited series after hearing the pitch for season two. So, The Outsider exists in that weird space between limited series and a canceled series, with King having reportedly given his blessing for the Season 2 storyline.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix)

Series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa adapted his comic books to create a very different vehicle for the teen witch. In a dark coming-of-age story, Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) navigates humans and occult worlds while confronting the evil forces that threaten her loved ones. She’s been to literal Hell and back and encountered demons and witches of all types over the three seasons that have aired so far. Netflix announced that it would not renew the series ahead of its season four premiere on December 31, 2020, but at least it seems fans will receive closure. It’s a small comfort for a series that opened its doors to all types of horror, including the Lovecraftian terrors teased in last season’s finale.

Limited Series

If you’re worried about getting too attached to shows in fear of cancellation or you’re just plain short on time, the limited series tells a complete, self-contained story without much commitment necessary. These series won’t extend beyond their initial runs, allowing you to binge and enjoy at your leisure without worrying about the future.

Dracula (BBC One/Netflix)

The year kicked off with a bold take on Bram Stoker’s 1897 classic, one not too interested in adhering faithfully to its source material. The feature-length, 3-episode run followed Dracula (Claes Bang) from his Eastern Europe origins to his battles with Van Helsing’s descendants and beyond. Dolly Wells threatened to steal the entire show as the feisty Sister Agatha Van Helsing, but the gore certainly helped quite a bit. If you thought you’d grown tired of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, this series shook things up in a surprising way.

The Third Day (HBO)

For fans of Midsommar and similar folk horror, The Third Day followed a man and a woman’s separate journeys to a mysterious island off the British coast. In the first half of the 6-episode series, Sam (Jude Law) discovers a group of islanders dead set on preserving their way of life at any cost. Their secrets and bizarre rituals force him to confront his trauma, and he finds himself unable to leave. The second half follows Naomie Harris’s Helen, a woman who comes to the island determined to find answers. Instead, she finds herself in a perilous fight for survival. The Third Day does offer a familiar entry in folk horror, but it’s well-executed and full of enchanting mysteries that engross you anyway.

The Stand (CBS All Access)

The limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s epic novel has only just begun on CBS All Access. A new reimagining that shakes up the story in structure, featuring flashbacks within flashbacks, expect storylines to get cut while others get expanded upon in unique ways. Well cast, this iteration puts its characters first over the stakes in the ultimate battle of good versus evil. How it all shakes up, in the end, remains to be seen, but it’s interesting how creators Benjamin Cavell and Josh Boone skip over the pandemic setup and any hand-holding for The Stand novices. In other words, this is likely a limited series best suited for Constant Readers.

The Returning Favorites

In which we celebrate the sophomore efforts of beloved favorites.

The Haunting of Bly Manor (Netflix)

Mike Flanagan bid adieu to the Crain family and skipped across the pond to reimagine the literary works of Henry James. Netflix’s new season uses The Turn of the Screw as the main story, in which a young American nanny (Victoria Pedretti) cares for orphaned children in the haunted Bly Manor. Look for several of James’ ghost stories woven into this Gothic romance that will pull at your heartstrings by season’s end.

The Boys (Prime Video)

The second season of Eric Kripke’s The Boys upped the ante on the violence, gore, and complicated character arcs without losing its irreverent, biting humor. Sure, it’s not horror in the traditional sense, but its gleeful use of splatstick puts it firmly in the realm of genre that horror fans will love. Season two slowed down its release strategy, dropping the first three episodes at once before settling into a weekly format. The ire it drew from fans who couldn’t wait to see the next is another sign of how addictive the show is. Season two ends on some surprising revelations and cliffhangers for a new season, and luckily, it’s already been renewed for season three.

What We Do in The Shadows (FX)

What We Do in The Shadows didn’t just avoid the sophomore slump; it blew past it with such infectious style, humor, and heart, setting a new bar for perfection. Vampires Nandor, Laszlo, Nadja, and Colin Robinson made us fall even harder in love with their charm and hijinks throughout their encounters with rival vampires, witches, and trolls. Guillermo grappled with his place in the house amidst the revelation that he descended from Van Helsing. Throw in even more surprising guest stars, and you have a show that makes it impossible not to love.

The New Class

These are the brand-spanking-new series that premiered in 2020. These shows showcased how diverse the genre can be while drumming up a lot of engagement, viewership, and discussion. Mostly, though, they brought a lot of fun.

Cursed Films (Shudder)

Jay Cheel’s documentary series explores the myths, stories, and legends surrounding some of horror’s most notoriously cursed productions. Over the inaugural 5-episode season, Cheel assembles a variety of talking heads, candid discussion, and footage to expose the truth behind the curses of The Exorcist, The Omen, Poltergeist, The Crow, and Twilight Zone: The Movie. The result is an oft-heartbreaking realization that behind superstition lies a human cost.

Ju-On: Origins (Netflix)

Like the film franchise that inspired it, this 6-episode origin series followed an ensemble cast across time – all tethered to the infamous house. Even by season’s end, it’s not entirely clear what the story is about or where it’s headed, save for its rumination on the horrors that men inflict on those around them. Still, it’s a bold entry that eschews the franchise’s most popular characters in favor of forging new ground. Most of all, it brings about some unnerving and visceral horror via practical effects, courtesy of Screaming Mad George.

Locke & Key (Netflix)

The 10-episode inaugural season kickstarted the Locke saga from Joe Hill’s popular comic series, finally, after many failed attempts in the past. After their father is murdered under mysterious circumstances, the three Locke siblings and their mother move into their ancestral home, Keyhouse, which they discover is full of magical keys that may be connected to their father’s death. While it makes some significant departures from Hill’s source story, Locke & Key successfully invokes the comics’ imagery. It goes heavy on the fantasy-horror. If you’re a fan, you’re in luck as it was just renewed for a third season ahead of season two’s premiere.

Lovecraft Country (HBO)

The series with the biggest buzz belongs to this adaptation of Matt Ruff’s novel by series creator Misha Green. It follows Atticus Freeman (Jonathan Majors) in his quest to find his father during the 1950s, a time of segregation and social upheaval, but with many Lovecraftian beasties and terror thrown in for added complications. While Lovecraft Country has a lot to say, it’s also winsome for its cast, monsters and cinematic visuals.

Monsterland (Hulu)

Based upon the short story collection North American Lake Monsters: Stories by Nathan Ballingrud, this anthology series runs the gamut in style and tone. Mostly, though, it’s bleak as hell with a stark reminder that humans remain the worst possible type of monster. In other words, it’s not a series you want to binge unless you’re in the mood for despair. Like most anthologies, episodes will vary by taste and quality.

Raised by Wolves (HBO)

From executive producer Ridley Scott, Raised by Wolves centers on two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious virgin planet. It’s highly ambitious, cerebral sci-fi that feels very much at home in the Alien universe, though entirely unconnected. Raised by Wolves may feature an alien planet, gruesome deaths, and even some alien lifeforms, but expect this to instead get heady with its ruminations on religion. You can expect the weirdness to continue, as the series received a second season renewal.

Warrior Nun (Netflix)

This pulpy occult action series gives a fun twist to demonic possession and Vatican conspiracies based on a comic series. A singular, silly Hero’s journey with a witty teen antihero transforms into an epic, ensemble story that’s refreshingly ballsy and mature in the way it tackles oft controversial subject matter. After waking up in a morgue, an orphaned teen discovers she now possesses superpowers as the chosen Halo Bearer for a secret sect of demon-hunting nuns. In other words, expect an action-heavy series that will appeal to Buffy fans. Season one ended on a major cliffhanger, but luckily season two is on its way.

If you’re not yet signed up for HBO Max, this October’s new adaptation of The Witches isn’t the only reason to get around to that on the road to Halloween. The film, we learned earlier today, is coming exclusively to HBO Max on October 22, joining another piece of must-watch genre entertainment that you can only watch through the streaming service: “Raised by Wolves.”

The Aaron Guzikowski-created, Ridley Scott-produced sci-fi series just wrapped up its 10-episode first season this week, and the good news is that the series has already been renewed for a second season. That’s great news, in particular, because the season one finale left us with *a lot* of new questions in regards to the mysteries of the show’s peculiar world.

This article, from this point on, will contain spoilers.

The season one finale, titled “The Beginning,” was indeed something of a new beginning for “Raised by Wolves,” busting the show’s world and mythology wide open with a handful of revelations. For starters, Father most definitely has very human feelings towards Mother; Campion, it seems, is the “Chosen One”; and oh yeah, Mother gave birth to a serpentine beast.

In one of the show’s most jaw-dropping, unexpected, and downright weird moments to date, Mother (an exceptional Amanda Collin) birthed a snake-like monster out of her mouth, the show revealing that it wasn’t her creator who impregnated Mother during their virtual reality hookup but rather some kind of evil force that infected that romantic simulation.

The episode ended with Mother and Father failing to destroy the creature, which has now grown to a massive size. It would seem that the snake-like monster, which appears to be hungry for human blood, is the rebirth of a species that had once dominated the planet known as Kepler-22b, as we had seen giant skeletons of similar-looking beasts littering the landscape in previous episodes. Only this particular monster can fly, presumably a trait it inherited from its Mother. So yes, there’s now a flying monster prowling the skies of Kepler-22b.

Additionally, “The Beginning” clued us into the fact that the monsters the characters have been contending with throughout the season are actually human beings who have devolved into creatures, and both humans and androids have been on Kepler-22b before. As Father remarks, this whole time we’ve been dangerously ignorant of the planet’s secrets.

Ridley Scott explained to NY Times this week, “This planet had life on it prior to these people’s arrival. When they arrive on the planet, Mother and Father discover that there is this dinosaur-sized skeleton of a serpent. Initially we assume these massive creatures were like our dinosaurs and died off. And we discover that there are other forms of life on the planet. And then Mother creates new life with one of these serpents.”

Guzikowski chimes in, “Mother and Father think the giant skull is from an extinct creature, not realizing that someday Mother would give birth to one and reintroduce it to the world and reactivate the planet. You’re seeing all of these iconic elements — the serpent, the garden, Adam and Eve — but they’re not the versions we know. We subvert expectations a little bit.”

How was Mother, an android, impregnated in the first place, you ask? Guzikowski explains, ” It’s kind of a weird thing, because it’s almost like she’s been digitally impregnated with information, as it were. While she was communing with her creator in a virtual space, basically having sex in the simulation, something else got inside and downloaded her drive with information about how to build a new being. In essence, Mother is like a 3-D printer. Her body starts to work on that digital information and it decides that it needs more organic compounds. Because she’s an android, her body could download that information and make something out of it. Her body was never designed to give birth, though, so it has to improvise a bit to get the thing out of her.”

And what about that strange dream sequence Mother had, wherein she witnessed what appeared to be a mask-wearing android being tortured inside some sort of device?

“Basically, when she has that dream and she sees that thing and that weird kind of helmet robot head thing, and the fuel blood starts gushing out of the front of it, kind of the nozzle on the front, what that is, there is actually an android inside of that,” Guzikowski confirmed in a different chat with Collider. “It’s sort of like a birthing prison sort of thing. So their body’s inside the pentagonal bottom half. The top piece is a helmet that goes over the android, and the android then births a circuit out the nozzle. So, that’s essentially what that is. That’s kind of what you’re seeing, this kind of foreshadowing of what’s about to happen to her, but she can’t quite put it together until the very last moment when it’s too late.”

Needless to say, it’s looking like things are going to get *really weird* in the show’s second season. And Guzikowski promises that there is a whole lot left to explore on Kepler-22b.

“I can’t spell it all out now, because the show is so much about mystery, but we have a multiple-season plan that will illuminate a lot of stuff,” Guzikowski told NY Times. “It’s like a big haunted house, and it’s about the people who lived there before, all the rooms you haven’t seen the inside of, the backyard you haven’t seen yet.”

He continued, “So we are going to a very different region for Season 2. It’s like Season 1 was in Arizona, and Season 2 is in Siberia. That’s just as an example — we’re not going to a snowy place. And there are going to be new arrivals from Earth [some of whom Travis Fimmel’s Marcus had a run in with in the finale] and a change in power dynamics.”

“Hopefully it’s a good long five, six-season arc for the whole thing in terms of the map that exists now,” Guzikowski told Collider in the same interview mentioned above.

For more from Scott and Guzikowski, head over to NY Times and Collider.

All 10 episodes of “Raised by Wolves” are now streaming on HBO Max.

Ridley Scott‘s ongoing HBO Max series “Raised by Wolves” is constantly tapping into his horror roots and this week’s episode is no exception.

In tomorrow night’s episode, “Mass”, director Alex Gabassi calls back to one of the scariest sequences in horror that comes straight out of Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper’s terrifying Poltergeist.

What you’ll see below is a scene in which Marcus (Travis Fimmel) is trying to remember what his face looked like before his surgery and ends up going full Poltergeist, recalling the infamous moment when Martin Casella’s character hallucinates peeling his face off in the mirror (fun fact: the hands peeling off his face belong to none other than Steven Spielberg himself).

The episode airs this coming Thursday, September 24, which means you have a little over 24 hours to catch up!

The horror genre can, at turns, provide a much-needed escape from the world we live in, as well as an opportunity to directly confront our anxieties about those very real ills. Throughout the month of September, new movies, TV shows, mini-series and video games are giving all of us horror fans something to look forward to, whether we’re having a great time or cowering on our couches… or both!

The nightmare begins now – right now! – with the September 1st VOD release of Followed, a supernatural thriller about a social media influencer who’ll do anything to boost their numbers, including staying at a haunted hotel! In the room where a serial killer once lived! This one takes place entirely on a computer screen, a la the hit films Searching and Host.

HBO Max debuts a new series on a much larger scale on September 3rd, a sci-fi thriller called Raised By Wolves, about a planet where androids raise the last human children and defend them from religious zealots. But maybe the androids aren’t as peaceful as they seem, and maybe they’re growing a little too human? Travis Fimmel and Amanda Collin star in a series written by Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners), and produced by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner), who also directs the first two installments.

‘Raised by Wolves’

One day later, on September 4, your horror options expand with I’m Thinking of Ending Things, a new psychological horror film from director Charlie Kaufman (Anomalisa), about a young woman trapped on a farm with her boyfriend and his parents during a snowstorm, where the situation turns mind-bending. The film stars Jessie Buckley, Jesse Plemons, Toni Collette and David Thewlis, and debuts on Netflix after a brief theatrical premiere. In her review at Bloody-Disgusting, Meagan Navarro says the film “will likely wreck you,” and is “triumphant in casting a spell of heartbreak and longing.”

Also on September 4, you can find the new horror-thriller The Owners in theaters, On Demand and on Digital! Maisie Williams from Doctor Who stars alongside Sylvester McCoy, also from Doctor Who, in a home invasion film about young thieves who break into the wrong house, and find themselves in a game of cat-and-mouse with the elderly owners!

Netflix has more horror offerings in the days that follow, with the South Korean zombie thriller #Alive debuting on September 8. The film takes place in a city that’s under quarantine, and follows a pair of survivors trying to isolate in an apartment that’s cut off from the outside world. Then, on September 10, McG returns with The Babysitter: Killer Queen, a sequel to his 2017 horror comedy, in which the survivors of the original attack find themselves once again hunted by satanic cultists. Judah Lewis, Emily Alyn Lind, Robbie Amell and Bella Thorne headline the cast.

‘The Babysitter: Killer Queen’

Hey, remember VHS? Not the anthology horror movies, but the actual tapes? They once again become the source for untold horrors in the new horror film Rent-A-Pal, about a lonely man who finds a tape with a recording of a friendly person on it, played by Wil Wheaton. But this “Rent-A-Pal” isn’t free, and the cost may be too much to pay. Unless, of course, you’re in the audience, where the price to see Rent-A-Pal in theaters and On Demand will be comparatively reasonable when it premieres on September 11!

Over on HBO, September 14 arrives with The Third Day, an ambitious TV mini-series told in two parts over the course of six episodes. The first half, “Summer,” stars Jude Law as a man drawn to a mysterious island full of creepy traditions. The second half, “Winter,” stars Naomie Harris as a woman who arrives on the same island, who presumably also has some unpleasantness ahead of her. Katherine Waterston, Paddy Considine and Emily Watson co-star.

‘The Third Day’

Back in the streaming realm, September 16 brings the debut of The Devil All the Time, a new Netflix thriller starring Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Sebastian Stan, Bill Skarsgard, Riley Keough, Jason Clarke and Mia Wasikowska, from acclaimed director Antonio Campos (Christine). The all-star film tells the story of the backwoods of Ohio, where creepy sheriffs and preachers descend on Holland’s character.

One day later, on September 17, Shudder debuts Spiral (not to be confused with Higuchinsky’s surreal cult classic Spiral, or the delayed sequel Spiral: From the Book of Saw). The film stars Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman and Ari Cohen as a same-sex couple who move to a small town with their teenaged daughter, only to find it’s a sinister place.

Make sure you mark September 18 down on your calendar! That’s the day that Antebellum finally debuts On Demand. Janelle Monáe stars as a woman enduring the shocking evils of slavery in the antebellum south, and also as a historian exploring those horrors in the present day. In Bloody-Disgusting’s review, Meagan Navarro says Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz’s film “creates terror from history” but “struggles against its lack of tension and heavy-handedness.”

‘Antebellum’

But wait, there’s more! September 18 also brings with it the premiere of Alone in theaters and On Demand. The film, directed by John Hyams, stars Jules Wilcox as a woman traveling alone and the psychopath stalking her. In Bloody-Disgusting’s review, Meagan Navarro says the film “offers gorgeous violence featuring two competent leads,” but also that it’s “shackled by a familiar, barebones script.”

Also on September 18 (we told you it was a big one), the horror-thriller No Escape debuts in theaters and On Demand. The film tells the story of a social media influencer who’ll do anything to boost their numbers (which seems to be a popular plot point nowadays) and who travels to Moscow and becomes embroiled in a deadly game.

‘Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous’

And if you’re looking for a complete 180 from all that terror, September 18 also sees the debut of the Netflix series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. The animated show tells the story of a group of teenagers who are trapped on Isla Nublar, who have to fight for their survival when dinosaurs escape. The series takes place during the events of the film Jurassic World.

Late September may be a teensy bit early to start playing Christmas carols, but it’s just the right time for the new thriller Let It Snow, making its debut On Demand September 22. The film stars Ivanna Sakhno (Pacific Rim: Uprising) as a snowboarder being hunted by a maniac on a snowmobile.

And although it’s been a slow month for horror video games, that all changes on September 29 with the release of the virtual reality experience The Walking Dead: Onslaught on PCVR and PSVR. The new story allows players to assume the role of Daryl, Michonne, Rick and Carol as they gather supplies and battle hordes of the undead!

Remember: All of these release dates are subject to change, especially in 2020!

With Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, Ridley Scott explored heady concepts of creation and religion through the eyes of an android longing to understand humanity. Executive producer Scott now passes the baton to Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners), the series creator of HBO Max’s Raised by Wolves. This high concept series uses a sentient android as the focal point of its eerie and ambitious sci-fi fable, spinning out an expansive mythos that’s uneven in execution.

Raised by Wolves kicks off with androids Mother (Amanda Collin) and Father (Abubakar Salim) landing on Kepler-22b with human embryos after Earth has been rendered uninhabitable. They’ve been programmed with raising these embryos, to give humanity a chance to start anew. However, their new home isn’t quite the same as Earth and quickly proves an unforgiving, inhospitable place. Twelve years later, only one child remains, and the arrival of an Ark of surviving humans, a religious group called the Mithraic, presents an added threat for Mother’s end goals that she’s forced to confront.

Of the six episodes screened, Guzikowski is juggling multiple story threads at once. There’s Campion (Winta McGrath), the sole surviving child, who struggles with his morality and bond with his android parents. There’s the strange religious Mithraic and their past on Earth, with warrior Marcus (Travis Fimmel) providing the entry point in their story. Kepler-22b presents an elusive mystery; though creatures are teased and hinted throughout, much of this planet intriguingly remains a secret. The biggest storyline belongs to Mother, a cunning, dangerous figure clinging to her objective with terrifying ferocity while longing for more. It’s a lot, and yet the series struggles to maintain momentum as it pivots between characters and narrative threads.

Much of this has to do with its characters, and also in how the writing remains too conservative with doling out answers. Outside of Mother, there’s not much depth to any of the central players. It works for Father, a supportive android with simpler programming, but less so for Marcus, Campion, and the remaining supporting characters. Outside of a kernel of motivation, these characters still aren’t well defined. Through Collin’s riveting performance, Mother’s emotional journey, and the quest for answers make everything else pale in comparison. That means that whenever she’s not on the screen, the series starts to drag. Except, that is, for the hints of world-building that has yet to fully reveal itself.

The core conflict of science versus religion and the exploration of religion as a destructive force feel familiar, especially in a post-apocalyptic setting. Combine that with a cast of archetypical, derivative characters that don’t offer easy rooting interest, and you have a series that shouldn’t work. Yet, Raised by Wolves does successfully reel you into its bizarre world. It owes an outstanding debt to Collin’s compelling portrayal of Mother, and in the way this android continues to surprise. The series is also an operatic sci-fi spectacle, full of fantastic visuals and thrilling sequences of action and bloodshed. It helps that the first two episodes, helmed by Scott, immediately reel you into this enigmatic universe.

So far, Raised by Wolves is an ambitious series that manages to retread the same pitfalls of its sci-fi influences, yet stumbles through anyway thanks to its captivating lead android and the exciting promise of a creature-filled world we’ve only yet begun to explore. Unsurprisingly, the humans are the least interesting aspect of this show, but the eccentricities and otherworldliness of everything else charm nonetheless. For all the silliness within, it’s impossible to look away from the screen. Even with its flaws, it’s an immersive series full of intriguing imagery that leaves you curious for more.

The first three episodes of Raised by Wolves release on HBO Max on September 3, 2020.

Originally set up at TNT, Ridley Scott‘s sci-fi series “Raised by Wolves” is soon coming our way from HBO Max, and a brand new trailer has been debuted by IGN this afternoon.

This trailer puts the series’ storyline into clear focus, centered on an android named “Mother” who is raising human children on a hostile planet. Turns out humans aren’t so happy about this development, and they intend on taking the android’s children away from her.

But “Mother,” well, there’s far more to her than meets the eye. She may even be the most powerful weapon in the entire world. You’ll find the lengthy new official trailer below.

“Raised by Wolves” will be hitting HBO Max on September 3.

The sci-fi drama is about androids raising human children in an outer-space colony.

Mother was programmed to protect everyone after Earth had been destroyed.

When the big bad wolf shows up, she is the one we must trust.

Originally set up at TNT, Ridley Scott‘s sci-fi series “Raised by Wolves” is soon coming our way from HBO Max, and a pretty wild first trailer has been unleashed onto the net today.

Much like the Alien franchise that Ridley Scott brought into the world, “Raised by Wolves” features both androids and creatures, and I’m pretty sure I’m already hooked on the unique world it’s presenting. It almost feels like a case of Scott, who co-created and co-directs the series, freeing himself from the shackles of the Alien franchise. Here he looks to be playing with ideas he explored with his prequels, only now no longer beholden to that mythology or fan expectation. With a sequel to Covenant unlikely, this may be the next best thing.

The good news? We don’t have to wait very long to start watching. “Raised by Wolves” will be hitting HBO Max on September 3. While you wait, check out your first look below!

The sci-fi drama is about androids raising human children in an outer-space colony.

Written by Aaron Guzikowski, it focuses on two androids tasked with raising human children on a mysterious, virgin planet. As the colony of humans divides over religious differences, the androids learn controlling the beliefs of humans is a treacherous, difficult job.

The cast includes Travis Fimmel, Amanda Collin, Abubakar Salim, Winta McGrath, Niamh Algar, Felix Jamieson, Ethan Hazzard, Jordan Loughran, Aasiya Shah and Ivy Wong.

“Raised by Wolves” comes from Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions (The Good Fight, The Man in the High Castle), Turner’s Studio T and Madhouse Entertainment. Scott, Guzikowski, Scott Free’s David W. Zucker and Jordan Sheehan and Madhouse’s Adam Kolbrenner and Robyn Meisinger will serve as exec producers.

The first two episodes were directed by Ridley Scott himself.

“I’m always searching for new frontiers in the sci-fi genre and have found a true original in Raised by Wolves — a wholly distinct and imaginative world, full of characters struggling with existential questions: What makes us human? What constitutes a family? And what if we could start over again and erase the mess we’ve made of our planet? Would we survive? Would we do better?” said Scott. “Given TNT’s impressive run of bold, quality programming, this feels like exactly the right home for this kind of ambitious television.”

When seven teenagers go to a remote deserted plantation to skateboard and have fun, the day soon turns into a night of terror, as the true spirit of the properties’ past owners returns and they are stalked by the forces of pure evil.

It’s all-out terror as Random Media and Helios Productions announce the March 28th Digital (iTunes), DVD and VOD debut of Raised By Wolves, “an edge-of-your seat, blood-splattered horror adventure” from The Butcher Brothers (April Fool’s Day, The Hamiltons, The Violent Kind), directed by Mitchell Altieri. Starring a host of millennial favorites including Evan Crooks, Jenna Haze and Monty Greer the film tells the chilling tale of a group of teenagers who stumble upon a remote house while looking for a place to skateboard and raise hell. Unfortunately, the house also happens to be the location of a horrific 1973 mass suicide. Now, the kids are unknowingly becoming possessed and turning against one another, repeating the home’s violent past.

BD2016_YT

In the summer of 1973, dozens of teenagers were lured to a remote plantation by a charismatic cult leader and brainwashed into attacking anyone outside their group. What followed was a killing spree of unimaginable brutality.

The horrendous crimes were covered up and the only survivor locked away. The secrets of the Plainsong Massacre remained hidden…until now. Seven teenagers – looking for a place to skateboard, drink bear and raise hell – drive a stolen truck to the long abandoned plantation.

The high-spirited teens initially laugh off the blood-stained walls and mysterious symbols but, with night falling, it becomes clear they are being stalked by a force of pure evil and limitless power. As the childhood friends fight for survival, they discover the horrific truth about the massacre, and Mikey’s footage builds to a final confrontation that echoes all our nightmares.

Mitchell Altieri directs the found-footage Raised by Wolves, which stars porn star Jenna Haze, as well as Evan Crooks, and Michael Hudson.

“When a group of extreme skaters go searching for an empty pool rumored to be behind an abandoned house in the barren desert, they learn they should not have ignored the rumors that the house is haunted by a demonic presence and a dark history of occultism. What follows is a terrifying tale of evil possession causing the friends to slowly turn against each other.”
