Writing my top records for 2021 proved to be a challenge considering all the good music that came out last year – and 2022 already looks to be just as exciting. Across death metal, doom, ambient, avant-garde, nu metal, and even more, there’s a lot to be on the lookout for.

An important note that I want to share is that, while the below includes albums that have been officially announced with dates (or are at least in production/rumored), there are always a plethora of amazing records throughout a given year that arrive in under the radar. While the below includes records from incredible acts that you should be super excited for, make sure to keep in mind that other surprises are sure to appear throughout 2022.

Without further ado though, let’s look at some of those kick-ass records coming out!

Shadow of Intent – Elegy (1/14)

Not going to lie – I got into this band very much because of the “Halo” tag, but Shadow of Intent have proven themselves to be more than a gimmick (even if the gimmick is very cool). For me, I was really impressed with 2019’s Melancholy – which is a great work of melodic death metal and symphonic metal meets deathcore. Given alone what the band have shared from their single “Where Millions Have Come To Die,” Elegy looks to be another killer chapter for Shadow of Intent.

Mizmor – Wit’s End (1/14)

A.L.N. of Mizmor knows how to captivate and move listeners. Blending traits of doom, noise, and death metal, Mizmor is a remarkable force of existentialism and emotion. Wit’s End looks to continue down the path of heavy material the one-man act is known for; offering two tracks of breathtaking avant-garde sound, Mizmor once again invites listeners to experience a record of grand exploration and depth.

Boris – W (1/21)

This is one of those bands that I will be forever amazed by. Discovering them back in 2019 with their release of Love & Evol, Boris is an impressive force of noise, rock, and punk. Their 2020 collab with noise artist Merzbow is one of my favorite records of recent years, making for an experience of surreal sound that thrills and entrances. Given Boris’ incredible history of genre fusion and remarkable skill in technical performance, I am excited for what this band has in store for us with W.

Boy Harsher – The Runner soundtrack

The darkwave duo of Boy Harsher has a movie coming out this year called The Runner! Accompanying the film is a companion soundtrack, displaying the act’s awesome skills in creating captivating and chilling industrial dance music.

Korn – Requiem (2/4)

Frankly, I was never a huge Korn fan in my teenage years; it wouldn’t be until young adulthood with 2013’s The Paradigm Shift that the band really grabbed my attention. Korn has remained consistent in their later years, providing material that pulls from their earlier nu metal work, while blending in touches of electronic flair. Which is a good thing, given how their music works to both excite, while also providing lyrical substance when it comes to their subject matter. I won’t be surprised to hear Requiem kick a lot of ass.

Venom Prison – Erebos (2/4)

Following up that of 2020’s Primeval, Venom Prison is looking to charge ferociously into the new year. From the album’s single “Pain Of Oizys” alone, Erebos sounds to be a riveting work of crushing death metal. The menacing thrash appeal to Venom Prison’s music is enough to get anyone’s blood rushing, and this time around they are looking to push the boundaries of their artistry. When it comes to the new age of death metal, Venom Prison is a band you don’t want to miss out on.

George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher – Corpsegrinder (2/4)

While Corpsegrinder has been known to guest star on other albums, the Cannibal Corpse frontman is looking to unleash a solo effort this year. Containing a plethora of heavy genres, we can expect anything Corpsegrinder is working on to shred eardrums and faces off.

Zeal & Ardor – Zeal & Ardor (2/11)

Zeal & Ardor is one of the best musical acts I’ve discovered in all my years of music listening. 2016’s Devil Is Fine astounded me in its fusion of black metal meets electronic meets blues meets gospel meets soul presentation; a breathtaking work of musical ferocity that gets the blood rushing and unnerves. The depth to Manuel Gagneux’s material is remarkable, and he has only continued to expand upon his array of style. Gagneux has a brilliant talent for infusing his music with emotional depth, reflecting upon the cruelties and injustices of our world. Whatever he has planned for us in his upcoming self-titled effort, I am confident it will be breathtaking.

Blood Incantation – Timewave Zero (2/25)

One of my favorite heavy bands of today, Blood Incantation is a fantastic force of psychedelic death metal. With a jazz-like mentality to their compositions, Blood Incantation weave together pummeling instrumentation and mesmerizing ambiance to create surreal works of cosmic brutality. Their upcoming release looks to not only expand upon this quality, but to take things to a whole new sonic level for them. Blood Incantation is the closest we’ll probably ever get to communicating with the stars, so make sure that Timewave Zero is on your radar.

Animals as Leaders – Parrhesia (3/25)

The prog metal outfit has released a plethora of riveting, forward-thinking records throughout their career, and Parrhesia continues that trend. The instrumentation of Animals as Leaders has a tranquil, magical power to draw audiences into sonic landscapes of exciting wonder. In how guitar melodies swirl and contort, in how drums beat down alongside intricate bass rhythms – Animals as Leaders know how to craft songs of wonder.

TBA Releases:

Avenged Sevenfold

Fans eagerly anticipate a new release from one of heavy metal’s biggest bands. Avenged Sevenfold has always been proud to wear their influences on their sleeve, pulling inspiration from the great metal acts of thrash and groove to create their own brand of stadium rocking tunes. Whereas 2016’s The Stage was a great demonstration of the band further expanding upon their sound, it won’t be to anyone’s surprise that whatever the band has planned for us next will be a banger.

Coheed and Cambria

I love a band that uses music to tell stories, and it was the sci-fi epic tale found within the songs of Coheed and Cambria that got me into them. Throughout their career, the band has only evolved as a prog outfit, building upon their technical prowess and pushing themselves into new territories of style and play. The first couple singles released at the time of this writing are an absolute blast, providing a great rush and promising direction for Coheed’s upcoming album.

Revocation

Very excited for these New England metalheads to be releasing a new album! Following up 2018’s The Outer Ones, the band share that their new album should be out sometime in the fall. Expect a whole lot of thrashy death metal chaos!

Ghost

I’ve always found Ghost to be a fun band; maybe they aren’t meant to be fun, but I feel they have always been effective in creating dark pop-rock music. There is a tongue-in-cheek nature to their material that works to be playful, while still a little creepy. Their recent new track “Hunter’s Moon” (which is featured on the Halloween Kills soundtrack) is a whole lot of fun, and I expect nothing less from a new Ghost record but some good, creepy joy.

Rammstein

When it comes to moving a crowd, very few reach the level of extreme that is Rammstein. The German metal act has taken over the world with their ferociously catchy blend of industrial music, creating tunes that get folks riled up to dance and break things all at once. Their 2019 album made for another great chapter in the band’s discography, and I’m sure their next release is only going to rage with even more pop-industrial-metal fire.

Slipknot

2019’s We Are Not Your Kind is not only an impressive effort from the Des Moines, IA metal act, but also a brilliant return to form. Pulling from their musical history, the record is a remarkable fusion of style and depth, with touches of Iowa, Vol. 3: (Subliminal Verses), and All Hope Is Gone heard throughout. It appears that the band has a couple of releases they are looking to put out, with one involving music with a Radiohead-like sound to it. These songs are outtakes recorded during the creation of All Hope Is Gone, but the band does have another studio album in the works. Expect whatever Slipknot has planned for us to be heavy as hell.

Wednesday 13

When it comes to musical homages to horror, there’s no way one cannot mention Wednesday 13. While I will forever mourn the loss of The Murderdolls, Wednesday 13 is a kick-ass force of horror rock flavor; with a plethora of killer records like Transylvania 90210: Songs of Death, Dying, and the Dead, Calling All Corpses, and Necrophaze, Wednesday 13 knows how to entertain the ghouls and freaks.

Halloween Ends OST (John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter, Daniel Davies)

With the final chapter in David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy arriving this year, we can expect an official record component from none other than the Master of Horror himself (with the help of his son and godson as well). Given what we’ve heard from the past two Halloween soundtracks, expect Ends to ride forth with electronic guitars and some fun, chilling synth. This will be a record to get one’s blood rushing.

*Album I hope releases this year – new Job for a Cowboy

Job for a Cowboy is one of the best gems in modern death metal and I am in need of a new record from them. Since that of 2014’s Sun Eater (which FYI, if you haven’t heard this record, get on it!) – the band has been on hiatus. With several members working among different bands (some even coming together for a new act called Serpents of Gnosis, who put out a record back in 2019), there has only been little pieces there and then regarding news of a new JFAC record. Here’s hoping 2022 is the year that these underdogs of technical death metal release a spanking new offering of metal ferocity!

Rammstein returns in a few weeks and they’ve just confirmed that their new album has, at the very least, two good songs.

The band dropped a brand new single and accompanying video for “Radio”, which harkens back to classic music videos such as Nirvana’s “In Bloom” and Weezer’s “Buddy Holly”, with the flair of Marilyn Manson. It’s really good stuff.

Their self-titled new album arrives on May 17th via UME/Spinefarm in Europe and Caroline Records in the U.S. Pick up the album here.

Twenty years ago, Simply Vinyl put out a vinyl release of the soundtrack to David Lynch’s 1997 Lost Highway. Those days are about to come to an end as Music On Vinyl is putting out a reissue, which has a release date of November 4th, 2016. The song has all the earmarks of a Neue Deutsche Härte single, complete with jaggedly distorted guitars and synth backdrops punctuated by key leads. It’s not often that I get to use a brand new video for the Twisted Music Video of the Week series but a serendipitous turn of events has allowed it! Lindemann, the group comprised of Rammstein’s Till Lindemann and Pain’s Peter Tägtgren, have released an official video for their track “Fish On”, which comes from their album Skills in Pills, which you can see below.

Related: [Interview] Peter Tägtgren On Lindemann: “It’s A Party Album”

The video, which is VERY NSFW, shows a group of tribal women (who are topless, hence the NSFW warning) being stormed upon by humanoids made of pure hair. Several of these women are captured by Lindemann and Tägtgren whereupon they are taken to a rundown building that they are then forced to power using bicycles. The energy is used for Lindemann, the group, to perform for these Cousin Itt wannabes. However, they didn’t count on one of the women they didn’t capture sneaking into their party…

Oh, and there are dildo binoculars. Just throwing that out there.

A new 30-second teaser for the upcoming fifth season of “American Horror Story” has been released and it’s all about Rammstein’s “Du Hast”! Well, I guess it’s all about Lady Gaga and the really weird hotel that she’s prancing about in, but I choose to believe it’s about the German industrial metal band. Personal preference and all that.

The 13-episode season premieres on FX on October 7th.

“The Countess is a very old soul,” Gaga tells EW. “She’s extremely strong. She’s been through so much. It’s kind of impossible for anything to penetrate her. This show in many ways is about her survival and there is an amazing journey that touches on the mythology of viruses and in what way these afflictions change our lives and bring us together and tear us apart.”

“Built in 1930 by the rich and charming but deeply psychotic James March (Evan Peters), the beautiful art-deco hotel is, in actuality, a labyrinthine structure built to hide March’s murderous activities (think dead ends, secret rooms, endless shafts). This echoes America’s first serial killer, H.H. Holmes, which we detail here.

“In regards to Gaga, the show shifts to present day, where the Cortez is acquired by Gaga’s Countess, described by the site as “a glamorous socialite who attends art openings and fashion shows and maintains her looks not from a steady diet of kale but from imbibing human blood.”

“The Countess is also insatiable when it comes to love and sex, which sets up a macabre love triangle between her, the similarly blood-hungry Donovan (Matt Bomer) and the newly turned male model Tristan (Finn Wittrock).

“Also gravitating around the world of the Cortez are Ramona Royale (Angela Bassett), an actress/former lover of The Countess’ seeking revenge; Iris (Kathy Bates), Donovan’s mother and the front desk clerk; Liz Taylor (Denis O’Hare), a cross-dresser nicknamed by The Countess; Hypodermic Sally (Sarah Paulson), a junkie and friend of The Countess; Detective John Lowe (Wes Bentley), a cop investigating a murderer named the Ten Commandments Killer; and The Addiction Demon, a creature in the vein of Rubberman or Bloodyface, who has no eyes or mouth but does wield a nasty, conical drillbit dildo.” (EW)

When I previously posted it, I wrote the following:

The video, which was directed by Zoran Bihac, shows Lindemann and Tägtgren with strange face prostheses, making them look like pigs. From there, things get super weird, highly sexual, and flat out fucking weird. I think it’s a great video because it shows how demented yet entertaining the project is supposed to be. You can watch it below but be warned that it is absolutely NSFW.

On June 22nd, two music worlds will collide as Till Lindemann of Rammstein and Peter Tägtgren of Pain and Hypocrisy will release Skills In Pills, the debut album from their project Lindemann! The album features songs with titles such as “Golden Shower”, “Ladyboy”, “Praise Abort”, and more.

We got the chance to speak directly with Tägtgren about the upcoming album and what fans can expect. We also got some interesting bits of information, including that there are already plans for a second album, when Rammstein will begin work on their new album, and more. Head on below for this exclusive interview!

Make sure to pre-order Skills In Pills via iTunes.

How are you doing?

Good! It’s nice weather here in Berlin.

What are you in Berlin for?

We just finished up the video and we’ve been doing promotion.

The video for “Praise Abort”?

Yes, exactly.

Can you give me a hint as to what the video will be like?

Grotesque!

[laughs] Perfect! I’m very intrigued to see it!

Oh man, you will love it. It’s very sick. That’s all I can promise you.

I read that the two of you got to know each other in 1999 or 2000 and have remained in touch over the years. What spurred the two of you working together now?

We try to keep in touch via SMS or drunken phone calls to each other! [laughs] But in 2013, Till invited me to a festival in Sweden that Rammstein was headlining. When I got there, he said, “Hey, I’m going to have two years off. I want to write some music with you.” I said, “Ok! Let’s do it!” And that’s really how it started.

He was always a fan of Pain’s music. He wanted to do guest vocals on Pain songs but when I was free, he was busy and when he was free, I was busy, so it never worked out. So, finally we started to do one song, which was “Ladyboy”, and it was just like opening a funnel. The ideas just crawling out left and right and now we have 12 songs. It’s insane.

Till used only English for this album. I read that it was partially so that he didn’t have to translate lyrics for you. What were your thoughts on him using English?

I don’t miss the German, let’s put it that way. [laughs] His voice is so strong, I just think it’s genius. I know the hardcore Rammstein fans might not be happy but when he sings in English you don’t miss the German language. It sounds fucking killer. It’s really fucking amazing.

It was good because some songs that he started writing the lyrics first and I got inspired by the words. I started writing music on that. He would call me and ask what I’m doing. He told me once that he was in Canada on the Yukon River and I was, like, “What?!” And he was telling me about how he wrote lyrics for this river and how he wanted me to write a song. So, he sent me the lyrics and it inspired me to write music.

That’s the way we’ve been working together. It feels very unique. Once, he was singing into his iPhone and he sent me the file and I built music around it. That’s how we got “Praise Abort”.

It’s so fascinating that people can make music this way without being next to each other.

Yeah! We went over everything on telephone and emails for how we wanted to construct the song itself. When we finally got into the studio, after half a year of emailing and things like that, he came in and nailed four songs in 12 hours or something like that. He normally has to prep for six or seven weeks, so he was really happy.

Peter, what challenges did you face when creating the music for this project? How did you have to think differently?

It was no big deal. I mean, it kind of wrote itself. Of course I was under pressure from myself to deliver good stuff for Till since we’re working together, to make it interesting. From the beginning, we were not even supposed to do an album! We were only supposed to do one or two songs. He wanted to put it out but right away I knew and said that it’s too good to just put out there. Let’s try to write a little bit more.

There have been mentions that a second album will come out at some point. Are there already sketches and ideas for such an album or is it simply that the two of you enjoyed creating this one so much that you want to do it again?

[laughs] We’re rolling already! We were already writing stupid lyrics when we were drunk and shit. We’re going at it. We’re going to go as long as we have inspiration. Maybe it stops at five songs but at least we have half an album done, you know? It’s just so easy to write music together. No pressure. We do it because we can.

You both have such long and storied careers with your respective bands that this almost feels like a passion project, that you get to have a lot of fun.

Some people fly model planes or do puzzles with thousands of pieces. We write music, that’s our hobby. It’s what we do to get away from everything else, even though we do it professionally. When we do it, it doesn’t feel like a job. It feels passionate, like a hobby, whatever you want to call it. It’s great.

There have been talks of possible live shows. Is that something that you envision happening or is still just in talks?

We’re pretty scared, or whatever you want to call it, of how people are going to take this. We don’t know if they’re going to say, “Oh no, go back to your normal jobs!” So we really need some response from fans to see. As soon as we open up that can, we’re going to go insane with that shit.

So it all depends. If there’s not really a demand for it, maybe we’ll do a few showcases or something like that. But it won’t be full tours. I really don’t know! It’s up to the people to decide if we go out or not.

It’s really fascinating to hear you talk like this. As I said, both of you have such strong careers that it’s interesting to hear you, in a way, almost scared!

Yeah! Of course! We’ve been sitting in the studio for two years doing this, not talking to anybody. Nobody knew anything. Nobody had any sort of influence. We were just doing our own thing. And now, suddenly, we have to let it out to the public. We never thought of it like that when we did it. We were just thinking about the pure passion, just writing and seeing how it came together. And now, when it’s too late, we start thinking, “Was this the best we could do?”

Having heard the album several times now, I think fans of both of you will be very pleased with the final product.

I hope so! [laughs] It definitely won’t kill our other careers but we have so much passion about it for the last two years. It’s not too far from what we do in our normal lives. It’s a party album! I see it as a 2015 Billy Idol kinda thing, except the lyrics are more ironic and funny. It’s good music to pre-party to before you go out to the bar.

The lyrics are, as you say, very funny but also very shocking.

That’s Till! I don’t want to crawl in his brain and see what he’s thinking about! [laughs] For him, he was so inspired by the writing and singing in a new language. He said that it was like picking fucking cherries from the tree. The German tree was already hard to reinvent. He came from East Germany, where it was very difficult, because of Communism, to learn English. So, for him, it’s still very new. He’s a very social person. When he goes out on tour, he’s the last person to go to bed. And he loves to talk, so when Rammstein went out of Germany, he learned a lot of English. For him, it’s like a new beginning.

Both of you are parts of bands that often have very strong connections to the horror genre, either through visuals or through lyrical content. What do you think it is about your bands that draw such a connection?

I can tell you one secret: Till’s hero is Alice Cooper. His first album was ‘Welcome To My Nightmare’. Till really loves this horror thing that Cooper did in the 70’s. He’s always telling me how big of an inspiration he is.

If you listen to this Lindemann album, it’s really spooky, but in a funny way! When it comes to other bands I work with, I wonder if metal is spooky anymore. I know that it used to be. I grew up with KISS, which was scary as a kid.

I always like to ask this question: If you could get a famed horror director to make a music video for one of your songs, who would you like to have do it?

Actually, we were supposed to do the first video with Jonas Åkerlund, the director of The Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up”. We were supposed to shoot it in LA but he had to go to Argentina to shoot some video, so we shot “Praise Abort” with the director of several Rammstein videos. He and Till really click, so when we told him that we don’t want to do anything similar to Pain or Rammstein, he pushed the envelope in a completely different way.

What’s next for each of you? What projects do you see yourself working on next?

I think we’re going to keep on writing! Till is going to go back to Rammstein in September to begin pre-production stuff and he says that it usually takes two years from when they start until the album is done.

For me, I don’t know! I have no clue! As soon as all the promotion is over, I’m going to sit down and then think if I should do another Pain album? Another Hypocrisy album? Or should I keep writing for Lindemann? Right now, I have so many ideas for the Lindemann project.

It seems like you have a great deal of freedom that you have all these opportunities available to you.

Yes! Of course, now it’s going to change because people will hear the album. Before, no one heard the music so we had the free way of writing. But we will keep writing and if we like what we write, we’ll keep it. We will never put any rules onto how Lindemann should sound because I think it takes two to three albums before you really know what you’re doing with a band.

Any last thoughts you want to send to readers and listeners?

Yeah. The lyrics? Read between the lines and find the irony. Don’t think it’s all so serious. For us, it’s not to provoke. Yes, we want to shock people but, like I said, it’s a party album. Enjoy it and have a good time!

When he’s not rocking that 80’s sci-fi/horror retrosynth vibe as Perturbator, French musician James Kent works on his other project L’Enfant De La Forêt, which is far more cinematic and sinister, although it still has its moments of ambient beauty.

To celebrate the release date of the full album Abraxas, which comes out on May 1st via Revolving Door Records, a full stream of the track “Angst” has been made available, which you can listen to below. Personally, I hear a mixture of Portishead and Akira Yamaoka with, believe it or not, the subtlest dashes of Rammstein. If you want something to creep you out, I wholly recommend giving this one a spin.

You can pre-order the cassette via Bandcamp.

I’m not the biggest fan of the Resident Evil films. The first one was fun, the second was better, and then they started to get bad. Like, really really bad. The storyline got lost, the creatures made no sense, and the action dull and frightfully boring.

But something that potentially gave a little bit of enjoyment was the music, especially when it got nice and heavy, pumping shot after shot of adrenaline into a scene. It was moments like those that made me enjoy the popcorn munching flicks that these movies were intended to be.

With that in mind, and with the awesomeness that is Resident Evil Week going on here, I wanted to focus on the licensed music of the first three films. I wanted to dive in and think about which soundtrack I’d put on my mp3 player to go on a zombie slaying frenzy, all while avoiding the T-Virus, B.O.W.s, and whatever Tyrant or Nemesis gets thrown at me!

So, let’s get to ranking the licensed soundtracks of the first three films!

For a long time now, horror and licensed soundtracks have been a killer combination (no pun intended). From Lost Boys and “Cry Little Sister” to the gold certified Scream 3 to the metal and industrial-laden soundtracks of the Saw franchise, some of the best licensed soundtracks have come from the blackened depths of horror. That’s what got me thinking, “If I had to compare a subgenre to a band, who would I choose?”

So I came up with a list of 10 bands that I feel near perfectly represent 10 different horror subgenres and I wanted to share it with you! Head on below, check it out, and weigh in with your opinions in the comment section!

Action – Rammstein

Ex: Resident Evil, Aliens

If you want explosions, action, weird sexy stuff, and full on monster goodness, what better band is there to represent the action horror genre than German industrial metal behemoths Rammstein? These guys are action horror personified! Huge bombastic songs, explosive (literally) live performances, and some seriously twisted themes throughout their catalog. Yeah, I’m pretty sure I nailed this one right on the head!

Check out “Mein Teil“

B-Horror – Avatar

Ex: Basket Case, Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn

For B horror flicks, I figured you’d need something aggressive yet playful, something that’s heavy but also a damn good time. I mean, that’s what B horror is, right? It’s vicious, violent, and something you can’t help but love every cheesy second! That’s why I went with Swedish metal band Avatar, who mix metal with an almost carnival-esque charm to create something that’s fun as hell!

Check out “Hail The Apocalypse“

Psychological – Tool

Ex: Se7en, Silence Of The Lambs, Session 9

For psychological, I needed a band that was cerebral, one that made me think while drawing me in seductively before turning into something eerie, something sinister, something brooding in a dark corner, waiting for me to let my guard down for just one second. This is why I chose Tool. What other band fulfills that kind of description?

Check out “Sober“

Religious – Ghost

Ex: The Exorcist, The Omen, The Wicker Man

This one should be pretty obvious. However, it’s not only the band’s lyrical content that makes them so good to portray the worship of evil deities, it’s also their atmosphere and tone. They completely embody the tone and style of many of these films and are a spot on representation of the genre and its many offerings.

Check out “Year Zero“

Sci-Fi – Aphex Twin

Ex: Alien, Event Horizon, The Thing

Alien, dissonant, foreign, disorienting… These were the words that came to mind when thinking of sci-fi horror. Theses were also the words that have always come to mind when I think of Aphex Twin. A marriage made in heaven…well, more like the universe for this example, but you know what I mean.

Check out “Windowlicker“

Deathgrind masters Cattle Decapitation have landed at #1 on WatchMojo.com’s “Another Top 10 Controversial Music Videos” list for their now infamous “Forced Gender Reassignment” clip, which was directed by Mitch Massie. We premiered the video in 2012 and it has since become an internet sensation, attaining an almost “2 Girls 1 Cup” aura where viewers are challenged to see how long they can last before turning away in horror/disgust/revulsion/whatever.

What’s interesting to note is that this list tackles primarily mainstream artists, such as Miley Cyrus, Madonna, Erykah Badu, as well as others. Even the harder artists in this list, Tool, Korn, and Rammstein, are incredibly popular, so their placement amongst the “mainstream” makes sense. But Cattle Decapitation is not a part of the mainstream, nor have they ever been. To see them on this list is incredibly surprising and refreshing. However, it’s also troubling.

You see, it’s refreshing because the mainstream should never forget that there is a world of music that they coast over. Society shoves mass manufactured garbage into our faces, endlessly regurgitating the same simple chord structures time and time again, changing the synth pad so that we think what we’re hearing is new. And yet people keep eating it up because that’s all they recognize in the world around them. But if they were to brave the darkness and open themselves up to new possibilities, they can leave the comforts of the world they know and explore the seedy, honest, emotional underbelly that has such riches.

So seeing Cattle Decapitation in a list like this is great because people are forced to confront the fact that there is a world of music that they don’t venture into, either because of complacency or because of cowardice. And who knows? Maybe one or two people who viewed this list without knowing of the band decided to delve a bit deeper and hear some more that they have to offer. A few new fans? Awesome!

So why, you may ask, is it also troubling? Because the metal world is constantly facing stigmas. We’re angry. We’re devil worshippers. We’re idiotic knuckleheads. We’re uneducated. We’re homophobic. We’re racist. So on and so forth, over and over and over and over…

Let’s be honest, the video is f*cked up. It really is. When I was offered the opportunity to premiere it, I was hesitant. After all, the video tackles some incredibly touchy subjects AND features terrifying amounts of sexual violence. But the most important thing to remember here is that had it done all of this just for the shock factor I never would’ve shown it. If all the band and director Mitch Massie wanted to do was make people squirm in their seats for their own sadistic pleasure, some other site could’ve had it. I don’t care. I’m not showing mindless smut.

But it’s not mindless smut. It’s not a video that wants to shock just for the sake of being shocking. It has a message. It has a point. And it’s damn effective to those who are ready to face the horrors and give it a clinical, almost academic view.

But when the mainstream see a video like “Forced Gender Reassignment” and hear it labeled as “the most controversial video”, it gives them ammunition to denigrate us, the metal community. To quote Tommy Lee Jones’ character K from Men In Black, “People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it.” The vast majority of people will see these clips from “Forced Gender Reassignment” and refuse to look further. Or they’ll use it as a means to explain why violent acts occur. It’s been done before.

Why? Because they’ll be looking in all the wrong places. They’ll focus on the gore and not the message. They’ll see the violence and not read the lyrics (because 99.999% of them won’t be able to understand Travis Ryan’s vocals). They will completely miss that this song is a wake up call. It’s meant to inspire changing your perception and opening yourself to a new view. Just look at these lyrics from the song itself:

“Fear breeds contempt in the heart of a man
One has to question this common trait –
Why do we hate what we don’t understand?
”

Basically, what I’m trying to say is that people will focus on all the wrong aspects, just like they’ve always done with metal. And that’s why this is troubling. It’s not the band’s fault. It’s not the director’s fault. It’s the fault of people who refuse to take the time to look just that little bit deeper. I’m not asking them to like it and, to be honest, I don’t expect them to. But it’d be damn nice if they’d at least appreciate it.

Here’s the list for you to check out.

Students of music instructor Aaron Okeefe are back again with another fantastic cover, this time tackling The Cure‘s hit song “Lovesong”, which has been covered many times, most famously by reggae rockers 311 as well as a pretty solid cover by Adele. While the band is pretty solid, I have to say that the singer has a stunning voice. If she keeps going with it, she’ll definitely be going places.

Oh, and the video wraps with the kids’ cover of Rammstein‘s “Du Hast”. Head on down to check it out.

It’s Friday and I want this weekend to be something that I either remember for a very long time or one that I forget quite quickly. I want it to be wild, crazy, and hectic. I think that’s why I fell upon the classic Rammstein video for “Mein Teil”, the band’s first single from their Reise, Reise album.

Inspired by the case of Armin Meiwes and Bernd Jürgen Armando Brandes, whereupon Meiwes killed and ate Brandes (who gave his permission), the song has been met with great amounts of controversy since its release. As a matter of fact, MTV Germany restricted the video, allowing it to only show after 11pm.

Head on below to watch this fantastic, demented, nightmare of a music video!

How many of you have thought, “Man, wouldn’t it be just awesome if [insert band name here] toured with [insert band name here]?” I know I’ve done it on more than one occasion. Hell, I do it all the damn time. There are some tour pairings that make so much sense that it simply boggles my mind that the’ve never been done. These are tours that would get fans salivating, drool flowing from the mouth like waterfalls.

So I put together six of my most desired tour pairings, ones where the headliner and co-headliner would not only compliment each other but would take things to an entirely new level. Head on below to see my list!

Porcupine Tree with Karnivool
Both of these bands take progressive rock to near transcendental levels, mixing gorgeous melodies with crushing heaviness, often within the same song. Seeing the both of them perform live would be an out of this world experience.

Tool with Opeth
First of all, forgive me for my April Fools’ joke in 2011. But you have to admit, it was a good one!
But seriously, think about this for a second. Talk about a match made in heaven! Both are bands that refuse to write music that would suit “the masses” and are yet push musical boundaries, taking several genres and mixing them into something that only they can each pull off.

Katatonia with Anathema
While listening to some bands, it’s clear that they write the songs, they record them, and they go on tour. Then, they rinse and repeat. Mind you, there’s nothing wrong with that. Some bands write songs that are very direct and to the point.
But then there are bands that take it a step further and don’t release music, they release art. And that is the level that I place Katatonia and Anathema in. Seeing them perform is like going to a museum and really taking the time to appreciate what you are looking at. It’s not simply a concert, it’s a time for reflection and appreciation.

Alice In Chains with Pearl Jam
This is basically a way to make my inner 90’s grunge self make the unmanliest of squeals. Both Dirt and Ten are fantastic albums that helped shape and define my musical tastes as I was growing up. This tour would probably bring about the revival of the patch covered denim jacket.

Lamb Of God with Soilwork
The ferocity and aggression of both of these bands is undeniable. Lamb of God would bring a seriously heavy groove while Soilwork would bring the melody. It’s the type of concert that would result in many cases of whiplash due to headbanging.

Rammstein with Rob Zombie
Let’s be very clear here, this concert is all about fire. Both Rammstein and Rob Zombie put on amazing and explosive (pun intended) shows that would be something for the books. I’m pretty sure that the amount of pyro used over this tour would shift the global climate up a degree or two.

Alright fellow concertgoers, what tour pairings would you want to see? Let me know in the comments below!

Have we been slamming you with enough lists over the past several days? No? GOOD! Here’s another one for ya!

Now, you should know that I’ve seen more music videos this year than I had well balanced meals. Seriously, I’m watching them constantly. It can get pretty hectic and insane trying to remember many of them but, just like with any other medium, there are ones that stand out and become something incredibly important: they become memorable. And with that in mind, I want to share with you my Top 10 Music Videos Of 2012! Head on below to check ’em out!

10. Twelve Foot Ninja – “Coming For You”

Any band that can make fun of themselves while playing some badass music will get my attention and my admiration. These guys did all of that and more. Kudos for making me laugh!

9. Cattle Decapitation – “Forced Gender Reassignment”

I don’t think anyone could’ve seen how big and controversial this video would become when we premiered it. While many say that it is gore for the sake of gore, I completely disagree. I see it as a vicious, unrelenting attack on our senses while asking a very, very simple question: If you can force your vile, hate-filled beliefs upon us, why are we not allowed to do the same unto you?

Let this video serve as a warning that you do not mess with Cattle Decapitation lest they bring out the gimp.

8. Rammstein – “Mein Herz Brennt”

Visually dark, violent, and glorious, Rammstein have never been ones to hold back when bringing visuals to their music.

7. Municipal Waste – “You’re Cut Off”

This video is nothing but pure, gory, violent fun. Every second is a joy to watch and it never fails to put a huge smile on my face. Now I just need to know where I can get some of that neon green beer…

6. Job For A Cowboy – “Tarnished Gluttony

I’m a huge sucker for Lovecraft inspired tales and “Tarnished Gluttony” brings it all in spades. Definitely not a video for the queasy, it’s a beautiful, elegant tale that is as horrific as it is fascinating.

5. Pig Destroyer – “The Diplomat”

Monkeys with machine guns. A surreal, demonic lobbyist. Slenderman as a chauffeur. Hey, did I mention there are freakin’ monkeys with machine guns?!?!?!

4. Storm Corrosion – “Drag Ropes”

This music video transcends the idea of a conventional music video and instead becomes a piece of art. Beautifully crafted and haunting, it tells an eerie tale with fantastic, engrossing visuals.

3. Nekrogoblikon – “No One Survies”

How often do you find a music video that makes you empathize with a goblin and hate a human in the space of a few minutes? This video did that and a whole hell of a lot more. It’s going to be hard to top this one but I have a feeling the Nekrogoblikon boys have a few tricks up their sleeves.

2. The Death Set – “They Come To Get Us”

If I’m in a bad mood, I pop this video on and everything is made better. On top of being a fantastically energetic song, the video has an ungodly amount of pop culture references in it that will have you pointing and the screen and yelling, “Oh!” over and over again. Super Mario? Check. The Starship Enterprise? Yup. Godzilla? Si senor. Street Fighter? Signs point to ‘Yes’.

1. Sigur Ros – “Varúð”

This is not an official video. Rather, this was one entry into a contest that was run by Sigur Ros. It landed in the top 5 out of over 830 submissions. Personally, I would’ve picked it as the winner. But since I can’t do that, I’ll put it here as my #1 music video of the year.

No music video has touched me as deeply or moved me as much as this. The performances are entirely believable, the cinematography is stunning, and the story is so subtly and beautifully told. Every time I watch this video, and I write this with no shame whatsoever, I have to hold back tears. When it came time to put this list together, there was no question in my mind as to where this would place.

German industrial metal band Rammstein will be releasing an explicit video for “Mein Herz Brennt” this Friday here. The website has a ticking clock counting down the release. The decrepit building has several shattered windows that will glow red if you click on them (the hospital “plus” symbol does the same”. The bell in the steeple turns the sound on and off. All in all, it’s a rather eerie website.

While the song originally appeared on the album Mutter, a single of it was released today on iTunes that includes a piano version (watch the really unsettling video below), four other versions and a new song entitled “Gib Mir Deine Augen”.

The band will also be releasing a DVD/Blu-ray collection entitled Videos 1995-2012. Every music video they’ve released will be included on this collection as well as two new videos for “Mein Herz Brennt”. Pre-orders are available here.

First of all, the song is not the original one that we’re used to hearing from the album Mutter. Rather, it’s a totally stripped down version that is just singer Till Lindemann hauntingly singing over a piano. As for the video, a filthy, dress-wearing Lindemann walks around a decrepit bath room (one that looks very much like the one in the blood bath scene in Hostel 2). He often smiles into the camera, showing disgusting, stained teeth, but the smile is full of sadness, his eyes wet with unshed tears. Check it all out in the video below.

The single is being released as a CD, digital download and 7″ vinyl and includes, besides the “Piano Version” of “Mein Herz brennt”, four B sides, one of them being the previously unreleased track “Gib mir Deine Augen”.

The video will be a part of the Videos 1995-2012 collection, which is coming out Jan. 15th, 2013 in the States. You can find more information on that boxset here.

A Pale Horse Named Death is aiming to release their sophomore album, the follow-up to 2011’s And Hell Will Follow Me (review), in late Spring of 2013. The band has once again commissioned famed artist Sam Shearon AKA Mister-Sam (Rob Zombie, Fear Factory, Rammstein) to create the artwork for the as yet untitled album.

Vocalist/guitarist Sal Abruscato (who was also Type O Negative‘s drummer) gives an update, “The sound has evolved and become a bit more orchestrated. More harmony work has been done on this album, including new elements such as a Hammond B3 organ and piano. To me the album has an even darker sound and feel than the first one.”

He continued, “The new album is a natural progression in song writing and vocals yet keeping continuity with the first album musically and artistically. Fans of our first album will find all the traits they love melded with even bigger production and mastering. Ted Jensen of Sterling Sound will be mastering the album.”

I’m one of those guys who pops in a foreign horror movie into my DVD player (I still haven’t upgraded to Blu-Ray. Shove off.) and makes sure that it’s set to English subtitles and the original language as my audio. I’d rather read the text at the bottom of the screen than see mouths move without the words matching. That throws me off more than anything else.

But the main reason I do this is because I love hearing the languages of the world. I want to hear the difference between Spanish and Portuguese. I want to hear how Serbian is different from Russian (True story: Since I know a bit of Russian, I was actually able to understand several words and phrases in A Serbian Film). It’s so exciting to hear the flow and intonations of other languages and it makes the world a much richer place for me.

The same thing applies to my love of music. I love hearing people sing in different languages because it makes it that much more of an adventure. While I may not understand what they are saying (that’s why translations are available), their passion and the musical flow of their voice is so enchanting that I’m hooked.

It’s a joy listening to an artist such as Emilie Simon, Rammstein, or Dir En Grey, because I get to hear a language that I don’t normally encounter in my daily life. Be it French, German, Japanese, Swedish, Hebrew, Arabic, Portuguese, etc…, these are all languages that I’m not familiar with. They tantalize me when I hear them.

When I hear these people sing in another language, it changes what my mind normally envisions. I think of all the images and associations I have with that language and I place the music there and not here, in my everyday surroundings. For instance, when I listen to Bergraven‘s “Doende“, I think of ice floes with stone ruins jutting out like half-buried monoliths.

When Emilie Simon sings “Annie“, I think of Paris at night during a rain storm, the streets black, puddles reflecting the light from lampposts, cafes nearly empty, perhaps one or two people inside sipping coffee waiting for the storm to pass.

I listen to band’s like Lacuna Coil and their song “Senzafine” and, while I don’t understand the lyrics, I can make educated guesses as to some of them. For instance, when Andrea screams out, “Madre!”, it’s pretty easy to guess that he’s saying, “Mother!” But why is he calling out so desperately for his mother? What does the rest of the song say that makes this such a need for him?

It’s moments like these that I relish when listening to music. It’s times like those where I get to let my imagination run completely free, creating my own story that will satisfy my curiosity until I need to know the true meaning, at which point I look up the translation of the lyrics and see how close, if at all, I was.

Look, I realize that, at the end of the day, it’s a totally subjective, personal choice. Me, I love hearing people sing in their native tongue. But what about you? If you had a choice, would you rather hear people sing in their own language or in your primary language, so that you can understand the lyrics?

Would you rather hear someone sing in their native tongue or in your primary language?

It’s no secret that the Wacken Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany is probably the largest metal festival in the world. Drawing in tens of thousands of people from across the globe, this festival brings some of the biggest names in hard rock and metal as well as showing the more underground, extreme acts that people would otherwise have no chance to see.

Now, the 2013 incarnation of this extremely popular festival is officially sold out. Let me rephrase that in a way that should have a mind-blowing effect on you: Wacken Open Air has sold 75,000 tickets almost one year in advance. There is one set price for tickets ($140) and they are sold on a first come, first served basis for the Aug 1st – 3rd festival. Without knowing the full line up for the show, people have spent $140 plus fees and postage. It’s unbelievable but it also says that Wacken is doing something right. They have been selling out the festival for several years now and it looks like there is no sign of them stopping.

Below is a list of bands that are so far confirmed to play at the show (a TON more will be added over the next months, so keep an eye out at the official website to stay up-to-date)

Amorphis
Anthrax
Arch Enemy
ASP
Bob Wayne
Candlemass
Deep Purple
Die Kassierer
Doro
Eskimo Callboy
Haggard
Hate Squad
Ihsahn
Leprous
Nightwish
Lingua Mortis feat. Rage
Rammstein
Sabaton
Scott Ian – Spoken Word
Soilwork
Sonata Arctica
Subway To Sally

In October of 2009, I became a contributor to Bloody-Disgusting Music. I submitted two album reviews, one being Rammstein‘s Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da and the other being Katatonia‘s Night Is The New Day. So, in a strange way, being given to opportunity to review Katatonia’s newest effort, Dead End Kings, is, in a way, a full circle journey.

But it’s more than that. One of Katatonia’s earlier albums, Viva Emptiness, was an album that shaped my view of metal, molding it into an understanding of how nostalgia and melancholy can be used as to make the listener feel incredibly powerful and poignant emotions.

So, with this history firmly in mind, I began my journey into Dead End Kings, apprehensive but hopeful of the musical path that was open before me.

The album begins with “The Parting”, which begins almost innocuously before distorted guitars roar into power. The song then mellows in the verse as a piano takes over the chord foundation and strings hover like ghosts in the background. Singer Jonas Renske’s gentle voice croons softly, his delivery hypnotic. This range, this grand scope of instrumentation and dynamic range, is maintained throughout the rest of the album.

One of the highlights of the album is the guest appearance of The Gathering vocalist Silje Wergeland on the track “The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here”. The vocal harmonies are heart wrenching and Silje’s voice adds a rich dynamic that is beautifully understated and not in any way overused. Rather, it is used a compliment to Renske.

As a whole, Dead End Kings has much of the heaviness that was present on Viva Emptiness mixed with the melody, grace, and haunting beauty of Night Is The New Day. The guitars are thick and heavy while not being overly aggressive. The bass picks exactly the right moments to make itself present and heard before retreating back as a thunderous foundation. The drums are sharp with a satisfying sizzle coming from the cymbals. And, as mentioned, the vocals are clear with brilliant vocal harmonies that are beautifully layered and spaced out.

For me, there has always been this sound to Katatonia that I can only describe as the feeling one gets when hearing an old vinyl record gently scratching as it turns round and round, wobbling up and down, warped from age. Completely organic and arresting, each song acts like a story that must be heard.

I’ve waited almost three years for this album. Now, upon hearing the album, it was well worth the wait.

The Final Word: Dead End Kings is a musical opus that is a crowning achievement for a band that has consistently grown over the years. Katatonia are not just a band. They are a force that defines the very musical path that others strive to walk.

Sometimes I get really bored. I’m only human, and like the rest of you, there are times when I need a little entertainment. During one of my recent fits of boredom where I was lying naked on the floor of my room in a sticky puddle of dried up Mountain Dew while staring up at the ceiling wondering what wordsmith came up with the word ‘orange,’ I decided to come up with a little game — something to fill my time so I didn’t have to finally concede to what the voices in my head were telling me to do. For the unaware, at Bloody Disgusting lies a mythical creature known as a Jonathan Barkan. He runs the music section on BD with a tyrannical fist and a sweet moustache. If I were reviewing Jon, his Baby Factor would go something like ”If Albert Wesker and a Big Daddy got together to make sweet, sweet love inside a record store, Jonny B would be their musically inclined offspring.”

All that is a long-winded way of saying he knows his music, and he also happens to share my love of video games. So let’s get back to the game I was teasing earlier. I gave Jon ten video game franchises and asked him who he thought would be best suited to score the soundtracks for that series. For example, if Akira Yamaoka had never joined Konami to craft the incredible scores the Silent Hill series is known for, who could’ve taken his place? Find out whom he chose for Silent Hill, as well as nine others, after the jump.

Jonny: Can I first of all say that my Baby Factor is one of the most flattering things I’ve ever heard/read about me in, well, ever? Seriously, I’m blushing so hard that I might as well be a rosy-cheeked maiden in a fairy tale. Are you my knight in shining armor Adam? ARE YOU??? Because this dragon isn’t going to slay itself!

Adam: I meant every word. Now let’s kick some dragon hiney.

10. Silent Hill, By…

Portishead

Jonny: Alright, so I’m sure many readers were convinced that I was going to go with Trent Reznor or Nine Inch Nails. But let’s be honest, that was FAR too obvious a choice. Instead, I’m going to go with the dark trip-hop group Portishead for the mysterious, terrifying Silent Hill. Portishead is a group that has always had a darker edge to them, using tones that easily cover the mechanical, industrial aspect that we’ve come to know and love from the terrifying town. They also cover the same sense of nostalgic yearning and beauty. Just listen to the album Dummy and you’ll understand where I’m coming from with this choice.

Adam: I was hoping you’d really hit it out of the ball park–or in this case, amphitheater–with the first choice and you totally did. I love me some Portishead. They have that delicious mix of haunting and beautiful tracks that is a little eerie, but at the same time oddly soothing. I could totally imagine that as a backdrop to my excursions into that foggy town.

9. Fatal Frame, By…

Krzysztof Penderecki

Jonny: If you’re a horror fan and you don’t know the name Krzysztof Penderecki, I implore you to pay more attention to the composers of these horror films that you know and love. The man was responsible for several of the pieces that were used in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining and he was also responsible for me soiling countless drawers while watching said movie.

I chose Penderecki for the Fatal Frame series because the game series never had a strong technological edge. As a matter of fact, the games were rooted in much more organic environments, ones that can only be properly represented by organic instruments. That is where Penderecki comes in. He composes music that utilizes analog instruments but twists everything into something so horrifying, so unsettling, that it causes my skin to bypass crawling and immediately start running for its damn life! Fitting music for one of the scariest game franchises around!

Adam: I’m ashamed to say this, but until recently I didn’t know who Krzysztof Penderecki was. Now that I’m in the know, I’m totally ready to spread some approval sauce on this choice. The next time I visit that creepy secluded village in Fatal Frame II I might have to do so with ‘The Dream of Jacob’ playing gently in the background. Penderecki’s work would also mesh well with Dead Space, though it’d probably sound too similar to what that series already sounds like.

8. Condemned, By…

Rammstein

Jonny: Condemned is a series that is violent, aggressive, brooding, and in your face. What other band can match the atmosphere other than Rammstein? They have the same elements in their music, consistently proving that there is great intelligence and wit lurking beneath their intensity.

Adam: I went through a Rammstein phase in high school, around the time I had blue hair and was experimenting with black tar heroin (one of those is a lie, I’ll leave it up to you to guess which one). I love things in my face, always have. Maybe that’s why I love Condemned so much, because of how brutal and gritty it is. Rammstein is a fantastic match with the crazy shit that goes on in that game. Speaking of which, where the crap is Condemned 3?

7. Left 4 Dead, By…

Ennio Morricone

Jonny: The second composer to make this list, Ennio Morricone has scored some of the greatest films in celluloid history, including the brilliant western The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly as well as John Carpenter’s The Thing. It is specifically these two movies and their scores that came to mind when thinking about the Left 4 Dead series. The games have a rebellious, almost Grindhouse feel that a western-tinged score would delightfully accent while, at the same time, requiring a sinister, sci-fi/horror layer to promote the unending zombie hordes.

Adam: I’m familiar with and love The Thing’s soundtrack, but I had to look this guy up too. I would love to hear what Morricone’s rendition of the Tank’s theme would sound like.

6. Resident Evil, By…

Marilyn Manson

Jonny: I was hesitant to pick Manson for Resident Evil because it’s such an obvious choice. After all, he co-scored several pieces for the first RE movie. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that he really is the perfect choice. He’s able to build the creepy atmosphere through his industrial synths while bringing the action and violence through his heavier pieces. No doubt about it, Manson is the guy for Resident Evil.

Adam: I am all for this. Say what you will about the Resident Evil movies, but I loved the soundtrack for the original. The main theme is creepy, weird, and super catchy–like a certain virus, get it?–and I still listen to it every now and then. The tracks he helped score for the first movie have a surprisingly wide range, with some being crazier and more in your face, and a few that are a little more ominous and unsettling. I want to marry this choice, then I want to bed it and even after a ten year relationship with it, I’ll still love it.

5. Dead Space, By…

Trent Reznor

Jonny: And HERE is where the Nine Inch Nails genius makes his appearance! You see, when I think of Dead Space, there are a few things that immediately pop into my mind: Alien yet familiar. Mechanical yet organic. Qualities that I feel are perfectly exemplified by the music of Mr. Reznor. He would be able to take the terrifying Sprawl and give it a musical life that would do nothing short of making you crap your pants. Guaranteed.

Adam: Fuck. Ok, remember all that stuff I said about the Marilyn Manson/Resident Evil choice? Well, take that, multiply it by a crazy big number and you’ll have an idea of how much I love this choice. My ears have told me time and time again how they’d like to have Reznor’s musical babies and the idea of a Reznor/Dead Space combo has my nether regions all aflutter. Seriously. They’re aflutterin’ like crazy.

4. House Of The Dead, By…

Rob Zombie

Jonny: Let’s be completely honest with ourselves here, okay? Rob Zombie’s music was never scary. Hell, it was never even all that creepy. But god DAMN is it fun to blast at unreal volumes! Same with the House Of The Dead series. The games were never scary but they were absurd amounts of fun to play. And both had some slightly cheesy qualities about them: HotD has the terrible voice acting while Zombie’s music videos were almost comedic (just watch Dragula and get back to me). If I’m gonna play some HotD, Zombie is what’s gonna be my musical backdrop.

Adam: Totally agree. Rob Zombie’s music is fun, bizarre, and a little cheesy, and these are all words I would use to describe House of the Dead (I’d only have to replace “a little cheesy” with “brimming with a plethora of many very distinct varieties of cheese”). I’m actually a little surprised this hasn’t happened already, with how obvious this mash-up is.

3. Bioshock, By…

Tool

Jonny: This one gave me a bit of trouble. After all, how can you replace the iconic 30’s and 40’s music of Bioshock and still maintain that amazing atmosphere of beauty, depth, and intelligence? Oh, wait a minute, Tool is the perfect fit for that! Disjointed, spreading into many directions, heavily layered, shifting from beautiful melodies to violent chaos, Tool is a perfect example of what Bioshock is presenting to the player.

Adam: The only tool I want in my BioShock is me and my wrench! Err, wait…

I didn’t see this one coming, but I can see the method to your madness.

2. Doom, By…

Alice In Chains

Jonny: Work with me here. I know that when many of you think of Doom, it’s just endless waves of Demonic hordes, mindless violence, and tons of gore. But if you get down to it, the concept of Hell on Earth is kinda terrifying, the game has a very sludgy, dirty atmosphere about it, and the aggression is palpable. Kinda just like listening to an Alice in Chains record. Yeah, the band does some mellow tracks and they might not play super brutal metal but, my oh my, is their sludgy, filthy sound something perfect for the dark hallways of Mars.

Adam: I thought if you were going to pull out the hardcore Transylvanian black death metal, it’d be with Doom. I actually like this choice, and there’s still time for Alice In Chains to sign on to compose Doom 4, which better get revealed real soon or Alice isn’t going to be the only one in chains.

Also, I don’t know what that means.

1. F.E.A.R., By…

Deftones

Jonny: FEAR is a game that, much like Doom, is built around violence and atmosphere. Deftones have proven time after time that their take on alt-metal is all about capturing emotions rather than just doing something “weird”. They blast out violent metal as much as they build an atmosphere or almost choking pain, nostalgia, melancholy, and fear (pun sorta intended). Were it me, I’d call these guys up for some viciously sweet tunes for FE4R (should that ever come out).

Adam: It better come out, otherwise someone at Warner Bros is going to have something real to FEAR. Hot damn, I’m on a roll today. Oh, and good choice sir. F.E.A.R. could use a little extra emotion. F.E.A.R. 3 replaced a majority of the subtlety and creep factor so it could rely more heavily on action and those stupid blue soldiers that zapped reinforcements onto the battlefield with their blue teleportation bolt… things. I really wish I was making that up. Perhaps the Deftones could ground a bit, maybe help return the series to its roots in shit-your-pants terror.

So reader, now’s the time to tell us what you think of Jon’s choices. Agree? Disagree? Don’t care? If you’re feeling super generous, you should totes tell us what bands you would’ve chosen. That would make Jon real happy.

Yes, this is quite the old video. No, I don’t care. Know why? Because I’m currently head banging so hard I think my spine is flapping in the wind. Below you can check out an awesome remix that Meshuggah did for Rammstein‘s Benzin, which originally appeared on the Rosenrot album. To say that the song is heavy is an understatement. Check it out and let me know your thoughts!

You can cast your vote HERE and then receive your complementary prize of sexual relations with Oderus Urungus. Check below for all the details.
“Our show is reality…we don’t know what you mean by live performance…we get attacked by dinosaurs while doing what we enjoy best—luring you to your death with our mutant metal–and then slaughtering you! Don’t let this category be won by a band whose show is just as good as the millions they can spend on it, all for an hour and a half show……vote for the band where the show never stops! Vote for GWAR!!!!”
“I pledge to have sex with anyone who votes for us. It will all be arranged thru the interweb, and on the next tour I will personally meet our supporters out behind the trash dumpsters and fuck them, suck them, whatever they want. If they don’t want to do that, then I will have sex with something they own, like a dog, or a lunch-box. I will also be glad to rough-up anyone, ya know, smack ya around a bit, throw you in the garbage, hell even kick ya in the tummy….won’t kill ya though…want you to be able  to brag about it to your co-workers.”

Hey all you rabid concert goers, BD Music’s own Vinny Mac has put together a list of five bands that he feels you have to see live before you leave this mortal coil. Check out the list after the jump and let us know YOUR favorite live acts.
Vinny Mac:
In honor of the newly announced Rammstein tour dates, I thought I would voice my opinion on some concerts. I have been to a large number of concerts in the last decade and now I bring you the top five bands that, in my opinion, you must see live.

5. Marilyn Manson: I have seen Manson twice, once at Ozzfest 2001 and then again at Mayhem Fest 2009. I have to admit I was never a fan of him until that Ozzfest live show. The energy he put out and the giant stilts he walked out in during the set made me a fan and made it one hell of a live show.
4. Slipknot: I have seen this band four times. My favorite show was the smaller indoor venue in 2004 but as far as lights, pyrotechnics and hydraulics go, outdoors is the way to see them. The bigger the stage, the better the show, and that is a show you shouldn’t miss.
3. Insane Clown Posse: This band might look like the oddball of the group and there might be many haters reading this, but I have seen them four times and they never disappoint. The love in the bulding makes it feel like one big family. Between the Faygo bottles flying thru the air to the clowns on stage with the water guns you cannot go wrong. When it all ends confetti falls from the ceiling and sticks to everything in the building.
2. Rammstein: When they announced they were coming back to the Chi, I got the idea for this article. Seeing them once in 2001, I have waited a decade to see them again. The rarity of the US tour is the reason they made it to number two on the list. When I saw them, they used more pyrotechnics then I have ever seen anybody use. Last time I was not close enough to burn off my eyebrows but this time around I’m making sure I am.
1. Mushroomhead: With every release and every live show over the last decade, Mushroomhead has become my favorite metal band. You think after five shows I would get bored, but with two water drums on each side of the stage and a perfectly timed light show you cannot miss them live. Between their catalog of heavy and slower songs, they know how to mix up there set list to keep every show fresh.

The “Ten Creepy Videos Just In Time For Halloween” list was a big hit with you readers. However, as many of you know, there aren’t just ten creepy music videos out there. So, I went ahead and put together another list because this holiday season is just too damn cheery for me. I’ll start you off nice and mellow with The Cure below, but after the jump, there are nine more creepy videos for your viewing pleasure (displeasure?).

The Cure – Lullaby
I have a serious problem with spiders, so the thought of waking up coated in spider webs is nauseating. Also, Robert Smith being eaten by a giant vagina is something to note.

Dir En Grey – Obscure

Wrapped bodies dangling from the ceiling, baby-faced strap-ons in use and a dismembered cybernetic naked woman. Does that do it for you? If not, there’s always a vomiting Japanese singer.
Behemoth – Alas, Lord Is Upon Me

Something about religion and the damnation of it has always struck a chord with me. I’m a big fan of any religious-based horror movie, so seeing it in a music video gets my juices flowing.
Eraserhead – In Heaven
The first of two videos in this list that aren’t exactly traditional music videos. This scene, taken from David Lynch’s trippy masterpiece Eraserhead, turns a beautiful song into something out of a nightmare. I still, to this day, cannot listen to this song without the hairs on my arm raising.
Opeth – Porcelain Heart
One of my favorite bands, Opeth managed to take the eerie beauty of ‘Porcelain Heart’ and match it with the visuals of Lasse Hoile to create a video that would probably be of great interest to the people behind the upcoming “The Raven”: This video practically screams out the atmosphere of an Edgar Allen Poe story.
Cavalera Conspiracy – Sanctuary
So, basically what we have here is the Elephant Man going on a killing rampage. I’m cool with that.
Aphex Twin – Rubber Johnny
Though not originally meant as an actual Aphex Twin video (it was meant to be a 30 second TV commercial for the Aphex Twin album ‘Drukqs’), director (and star) Chris Cunningham loved the concept of this video so much that he expanded it into this six minute format. Make sure to watch through the raver dancing to get to some gruesome close-ups.
Stone Temple Pilots – Sour Girl
Beautifully shot (and starring the always easy on the eyes Sarah Michelle Gellar), STP created a video that matched the subtle unearthliness of the music. It also helps to have some evil Teletubbies prancing around.
Rammstein – Mein Teil
It’s Rammstein. Enough said.
Pink Floyd – The Wall
The second of the non-traditional music videos on this list, Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ is a visual tour de force that has some of the most arresting visuals I’ve seen. If you haven’t seen this amazing movie, the above video is an unbroken clip on the entire film. I highly recommend turning up your speakers, hitting “full screen” and easing back for one amazing journey.
Well readers, this list has come to an end. But for next time, I want to make a list of YOUR favorite creepy videos. So, do me a favor and comment with a couple of your choices. Also, spread the word by sharing this article via Facebook and/or Twitter to get some of your friends in on this action. And as always, you can follow me on Twitter to shoot me some suggestions on there.

Metropolis recording artists COMBICHRIST have been tapped as main support for RAMMSTEIN’s first and only show on U.S. soil in ten years at NYC’s legendary Madison Square Garden. The show will take place on Saturday, December 11, 2010.
Rammstein and Combichrist are no strangers to each other. Both bands toured Europe together for four months in 2010, strengthening a tie that ultimately brought them together for what will undoubtedly be an amazing evening of beat-driven metal and industrialized mayhem.
While Rammstein will be returning from a tour of Latin America before this show, Combichrist will have wrapped up their previously announced U.S. Monsters On Tour with Aesthetic Perfection and iVardensphere as support as well as a handful of dates in Australia. Due to the announced Madison Square Garden date, the previously announced New York City date on November 20th has been canceled (refunds available at point of purchase). In addition, the Montreal, QC on November 18th has been canceled as well. Replacement shows on those dates have been announced in Ithaca, NY and Pittsburgh, PA.
