After Robert Pattinson was officially announced as taking on the role of Batman and Bruce Wayne in a revival of the character, there was tremendous excitement, only for Matt Reeves‘ The Batman to face one delay after another. Despite the various delays the project suffered, when it was finally released in 2022, it impressed audiences and critics, thanks in large part to Reeves’ emphasis on Batman’s detective skills and his noir-leaning style.

The Batman Part II has similarly faced a variety of production setbacks, and after its announcement in 2022, it was even expected to be released in theaters in August 2025. After various delays, the movie finally entered production earlier this year, though it has now suffered another setback.

As reported by Deadline, The Batman Part II is pausing production indefinitely as Reeves steps away for personal reasons. A statement from Warner Bros. reads, “Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter … Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”

The Batman Part II is currently scheduled for release on February 18, 2028, and it’s currently unknown if this pause will push back that release date. At this point, it’s entirely unclear if production is pausing briefly and could resume filming before the end of the month or if there’s a more substantial reason that will cause a lengthier delay.

Given the effectiveness of The Batman, it’s at least a relief to know that the studio supports Reeves and would rather pause production than find alternative ways to move forward on the project.

The world of superheroes, specifically DC, is in a bit of a precarious place. In recent years, Marvel Studios has seen diminishing returns with their post-Avengers: Endgame output, as movies like Thunderbolts*, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and multiple TV series have largely underwhelmed. The major exception, of course, is the record-breaking Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

DC, meanwhile, has undergone a major overhaul since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as the heads of DC Studios. Their take on the heroes kicked off last year with Gunn’s Superman, which was a moderate success, though the next entry in the franchise was this year’s Supergirl, which fell short of critical and financial expectations. Previously announced projects have been retooled and reworked, with their next project abandoning the traditional superhero formula to be a full-blown R-rated horror movie with Clayface.

Regardless of what’s happening with the DC franchise at large, The Batman falls outside of that continuity, as will The Batman Part II.

Our thoughts are with Matt Reeves in this difficult time.

A remake of Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 psychological horror movie Possession is on the way from Smile writer/director Parker Finn, but it’s tough to imagine an update. Let alone anyone measuring up to Isabelle Adjani‘s unforgettable performance in the original film.

Adjani starred alongside Sam Neill in the 1981 horror movie, which sees a woman start exhibiting increasingly disturbing behavior after asking her husband for a divorce. Suspicions of infidelity soon give way to something much more sinister.

Margaret Qualley and Callum Turner will star as the turbulent couple in Finn’s Possession, and Adjani has officially given her blessing on Qualley’s casting.

Not only does Adjani give a vote of confidence for Qualley’s role in the remake, but the French actor/singer also points out the resemblance between the pair. Of the similarities, Adjani tells Numéro at the Cannes Film Festival, “When I met Margaret at a dinner party a few years ago, she told me she looked more like me than her mother, so it seems this family resemblance influenced the director’s choice of actress for the role in Possession. Besides, she’s incredibly talented!“

She also adds of the remake itself, “And yes, Possession, a film that dares to be mystical and horrific, and this talismanic role, has achieved cult status. Today, the new cinematic extremism that has become trendy has led to remakes of films like Possession, with a certain enlightened opportunism. Why not?“

Isabelle Adjani in 1981’s Possession

The remake caused a bidding war among major studios, including A24, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, and Warner Bros., but ultimately, Paramount secured the hot remake package. Parker Finn is writing, directing, and producing, with Robert Pattinson also producing.

Żuławski’s cult film offers one of the more visceral and devastating dissolutions of a marriage, set against the backdrop of Cold War-era Berlin. It’s a brutal, disturbing, and poetic divorce movie.

Similarly, Adjani’s memorable turn in Possession permanently entered the cult status space with the violent miscarriage scene set in the subway, one that was more recently homaged in The First Omen.

Our own Brian Keiper celebrated Possession‘s 40th anniversary here on BD back in 2021, writing: “Possession remains one of the great horror films (and indeed films period) about divorce. Horror is a particularly potent way to address the pain, anger, and conflicting emotions involved in the breakdown of marriage. While Kramer Vs. Kramer (1979) and A Marriage Story (2019) can effectively depict the realities of divorce and child custody turmoil; these horror films can tap into a deeper root of emotion that is difficult to express in entirely reality-bound films.“

Margaret Qualley impressed with her turn in The Substance and is next starring in Southern Gothic horror King Snake.

Whoopee cushions and slime make everything more fun — even The Lighthouse‘s descent into madness.

The genre-bending film will be the subject of movie parties exclusively at Alamo Drafthouse theaters next Friday, November 14.

Stow away with Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson for an interactive screening with a live host and grayscale props: lanterns, whoopee cushions, and even baked bean slime.

Dress in your best The Lighthouse costume for a chance to win a collectible prize.

The 2019 film follows two lighthouse keepers, played by Dafoe and Pattinson, on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.

As an approaching storm threatens to sweep them from the rock and strange apparitions emerge from the fog, each man begins to suspect that the other has become dangerously unmoored.

Robert Eggers (The Witch, Nosferatu) directs from a script he co-wrote with brother Max Eggers.

Eggers reunites with Dafoe on his 13th century werewolf movie Werwulf, now in production, after which they plan to work together again on A Christmas Carol with Dafoe as Scrooge.

There’s always a risk of ending up on the wrong side of history whenever you jump on a proverbial bandwagon. For instance, Spaghetti Westerns were once considered one of the lowest forms of entertainment, and yet most critics now agree that films like Once Upon a Time in the West are among the best movies ever made. Of course, this kind of change can take a long time, but if there’s one cinematic opinion that I believe is ready to be retired it’s the idea that the Twilight films are irredeemable trash.

Sometimes, some movies aren’t necessarily bad, they’re just not for you. And now that both Pattinson and Stewart have firmly established their careers outside of their young-adult-oriented work, I think this is the perfect time to look back on the original Twilight and discuss how this excessively maligned movie can be a legitimately entertaining horror-adjacent experience if you overlook a few surface-level flaws and enjoy is as a campy genre-bending romance.

I was never part of the target audience for Twilight. I actually remember casually passing judgement on the folks who were reading Stephanie Meyer’s romantic saga while I buried my teenaged nose in Stephen King and H.P. Lovecraft. Despite my adolescent contempt, however, there’s a reason why these books were so popular. Originally titled Forks, the first novel in the series began life as a long-term passion project written for Meyer’s own amusement, with the story being inspired by a romantic dream where the author imagined herself being stalked by a vampire who thirsted after her heart as well as her blood. This initial manuscript would only reach publishers at the insistence of Meyer’s sister, with its publication being particularly unusual due to the book’s length – over double the size of the average Young-Adult publication.

While Twilight is often accused of being a trope-heavy bore with story-beats borrowed from Buffy and Interview with the Vampire, there really wasn’t anything else quite like it among the Young-Adult offerings of 2005. A surprisingly earnest dark romance that refrained from talking down to its audience, it’s no wonder the book was a hit among teens as well as movie producers – with the manuscript making its way to Hollywood before the book was even released. On the lookout for the next Harry Potter, Paramount Pictures quickly snatched up the rights to the novel and almost immediately started working on an adaptation through MTV Films.

While Paramount’s adaptation would have transformed the story into a more action-oriented affair meant to draw in the male crowd (complete with a jet-ski chase scene involving the FBI), the project would soon fall apart due to changes in internal leadership. It was only when Summit Entertainment acquired the rights to the book in 2007 that a more faithful retelling of the story was fast-tracked into production, with Lords of Dogtown director Catherine Hardwicke being hired to helm the picture and Meyer being brought on as a consultant.

In the finished film, which was released in November of 2008, we follow teenager Isabella Swann (Kristen Stewart) as she moves in with her father Charlie (Billy Burke), Chief of Police in Forks, Washington. Enrolling in a new High-School, Bella soon attracts the attention of fellow student Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson, who was cast at the insistence of Stewart after an onscreen chemistry test), eventually discovering that he’s secretly a century-old vampire.

SO WHY IS IT WORTH WATCHING?

There are a few benefits to being a millennial. For starters, we were (kind of) the last generation to have our taste in movies be mostly constructed by exposure to media that we had no control over – meaning that we often watched things that weren’t recommended to us by a personalized algorithm and that we had no personal interest in.

This may not sound very convenient, but being forced to watch things outside of your comfort zone is an excellent way to learn how to appreciate media that wasn’t necessarily meant for you. That’s how I still wound up watching Twilight years later despite having participated in the worldwide public shaming of the franchise and its fans. And wouldn’t you know it? I actually found myself enjoying this atmospheric little piece of romantic pulp fiction despite its refusal to cater to my personal genre preferences.

Sure, I’m still bothered by the horrific age-gap between our lead couple (something that would have made the story more interesting if it was ever addressed), but the story here is so sincere in its over-the-top melodrama that it’s easy to ignore most of these trope-heavy blemishes and just go along for the silly ride. Hell, even a grown man like myself was able to relate to Bella’s High-School loner persona, and while I thought that Jacob was an annoying third wheel of a character, he was only ever acting like a realistic teenager.

Of course, the film’s gloomy atmosphere is its greatest asset, with the town of Forks becoming a moody lens through which we observe the lives of hormonal teenagers going through romantic feelings for the first time in their lives. From the scenic photography to the comically exaggerated blue filter over (nearly) the entire picture, you know what the world of Twilight looks like at a glance – and I call that effective filmmaking even it’s excessive.

Over the years, I’ve even softened on the film’s mid-2000s alt-rock soundtrack. It may be the nostalgia speaking, as many of these songs were on the radio back when I was a teenager (even though I hated most of them at the time), but I genuinely think that the energetic melodies and angsty lyrics help to craft an appropriately adolescent world filled with exaggerated emotions.

And you know what? Despite the age difference, if a 100-year-old vampire lady fell in love with me back when I was in senior year – you can bet your ass that I’d be sparkling in the sunlight at the beach and sharing a literal Bloody Mary with her right now. Of course, this is just my way of saying that I remember what it’s like to be a teenager, and so does Meyer.

AND WHAT MAKES IT HORROR ADJACENT?

Twilight may be a teenage romance, but it’s also unabashedly a vampire movie. From the tragic description of the Cullen clan’s backstories to their World-of-Darkness-inspired super-powers, you can tell that Meyer was quite comfortable scrounging around the vampiric canon of masters like Anne Rice and even Bram Stoker. Her passion for the material is sometimes overplayed, with her characters often feeling more like gloomy comic-book heroes than monsters, but at least the story is being told by a fan of the genre.

And before people in the comments start complaining about how Edward sparkles in the sunlight as opposed to bursting into flames, it’s worth remembering that, before 1922’s Nosferatu, folkloric vampires were not hindered by sunlight. This means that Meyers’ shiny bloodsuckers are technically more lore-accurate than most other vampire flicks out there. That being said, I actually like some of the story’s additions to the mythology, such as having all of a vampire’s bodily fluids be replaced by supernatural “venom.”

There are also a few traditional vampire scares in the flick, mostly involving the nomadic trio of antagonists. And while I agree with the Vampire Sucks gag about the group looking remarkably like The Black-Eyed Peas, I appreciate that the movie allows for some brutal vampire-on-vampire violence despite its PG-13 rating.

I also unironically love Burke’s take on Charlie Swann. While in another more action-oriented experience he’d be the undead-hunting lead character, seeing him relegated to a supportive father role is hilarious when you consider the absurdity of what’s really going on – especially when he seems to have the most common sense out of the entire ensemble.

Campy, charming and occasionally problematic, Twilight may not be a movie I revisit often, but it’s also not the paragon of terrible cinema that the internet once made it out to be. At the end of the day, this is a harmless little teen romance with some memorable characters and legitimately great atmosphere. And even if you don’t like it, I think we can all agree that the memes where horror fans used to photoshop Wesley Snipes’s Blade into screenshots of the film are still objectively hilarious.

There’s no understating the importance of a balanced media diet, and since bloody and disgusting entertainment isn’t exclusive to the horror genre, we’ve come up with Horror Adjacent – a recurring column where we recommend non-horror movies that horror fans might enjoy.

Robert Pattinson stars as Mickey, an employee who signs up to become an “Expendable” in Bong Joon-ho’s comedic sci-fi movie Mickey 17. Warner Bros. released the second trailer this morning, teasing the myriad of ways in which Pattinson’s character will die for his job.

The theatrical release date is now set for March 7, 2025.

In the upcoming movie written and directed by Bong Joon Ho, “An unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson), has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.”

Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo and Naomi Ackie also star in Mickey 17, based on based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton. Bong Joon-Ho writes and directs.

Mickey 17 has officially been rated “R” for “violent content, language throughout, sexual content, and drug material.“ Some of that violence is on display in the film’s second trailer below, which features a hapless Mickey thrust into bizarre scenarios that usually lead to a shocking demise.

The film is produced by Oscar winners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner (Moonlight, 12 Years a Slave), Bong Joon-ho and Dooho Choi (Okja, Snowpiercer). The executive producers are Brad Pitt, Jesse Ehrman, Peter Dodd, and Marianne Jenkins.

The talent behind the camera is just as stacked. The director of photography is Oscar nominee Darius Khondji, and production design was handled by Oscar nominee Fiona Crombie. It is edited by Parasite’s Yang Jinmo. The visual effects supervisor is Dan Glass, and Bong Joon-Ho reteams with costume designer Catherine George (Okja, Snowpiercer). “Squid Game“ composer Jung Jaeil handled the music.

While the sci-fi comedy has shifted around quite a bit on the release schedule, the official second trailer indicates the new date is sticking for good. In just over a month, we’ll finally get to see Pattinson’s Mickey dying to save mankind. Over and over, it appears, which sounds like a fun time.

Up next from director Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk About Kevin, You Were Never Really Here) is the psychological thriller Die, My Love, and Deadline has shared the first look at star Jennifer Lawrence in the film.

Die, My Love adapts the 2017 novel by Ariana Harwicz; Ramsay co-wrote the script with Enda Walsh.

The rural American tale is “set in a remote, forgotten rural area; the story follows a mother who struggles to maintain her sanity as she battles with psychosis.” It’s said to be “a portrait of a woman (Lawrence) engulfed by love and madness.“

Robert Pattinson (Mickey 17, The Batman) plays her husband, and LaKeith Stanfield (Get Out, Haunted Mansion) portrays her lover. Sissy Spacek and Nick Nolte also star in the psychological thriller.

The book’s synopsis also gives a clearer picture of the emotional intensity. In the novel, “In a forgotten patch of French countryside, a woman is battling her demons embracing exclusion yet wanting to belong, craving freedom whilst feeling trapped, yearning for family life but at the same time wanting to burn the entire house down. Given surprising leeway by her family for her increasingly erratic behavior, she nevertheless feels ever more stifled and repressed. Motherhood, womanhood, the banality of love, the terrors of desire, the inexplicable brutality of another person carrying your heart forever Die, My Love faces all this with a raw intensity. It’s not a question of if a breaking point will be reached, but rather when and how violent a form will it take?”

In other words, it sounds like a very unsettling depiction of an unraveling mind ahead, especially with Ramsay at the helm.

Producers included Justine Ciarrocchi and Lawrence on behalf of Excellent Cadaver, as well as Martin Scorsese, Andrea Calderwood, and Black Label Media, which also served as the project’s financier.

We had learned last month that Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 psychological horror movie Possession is getting a remake from Smile writer/director Parker Finn, with Robert Pattinson attached to produce the fresh take. The project had caused a bidding war among major studios including A24, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, and Warner Bros., and it sounds like Paramount has landed the hot package.

According to a brand new report this week from The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures is now in final talks to acquire the Possession remake package.

Parker Finn is writing, directing and producing, with Pattinson also producing. THR notes, “[Pattinson’s] acting involvement will be clarified down the road as the script and schedules develop.”

THR reminds, “Set in West Berlin, the original Possession starred Sam Neill as a spy who returns home from the field to his wife (Isabella Adjani) and son. All is not quiet on the marital front, as the wife asks for a divorce and the couple descends into a destructive cycle that not only includes infidelity and neglect, but spins into murder, a tentacled alien creature and doppelgangers.”

The website’s report also previews, “Possession is intended to be Finn’s next movie. It will afford Finn a bigger scale, but sources say he hopes to keep an eye on an intimate story.”

Parker Finn’s debut feature Smile was produced and distributed by Paramount, so the upcoming Possession remake will keep Paramount in the Parker Finn business. Smile 2 releases October 18, with Finn returning to the director’s chair for the upcoming horror sequel.

Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 psychological horror movie Possession is getting a remake from Smile writer/director Parker Finn, THR reports today, and actor Robert Pattinson is set to produce.

Finn is currently attached to write and direct the remake, which has reportedly caused a bidding war among A24, Netflix, Paramount, Sony, and Warner Bros.

The project is still in its developmental early stages, meaning no plot or casting details are in place as of yet. But the original film is a strangely told narrative about an international spy and his intense relationship with his wife, it’s a haunting dissection of the dissolution of a relationship and the strange love affair the wife develops with a tentacle creature.

Leads Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani in the 1981 film devote every fiber of their being to their roles, and I don’t know that anyone has so fully committed themselves to their role as Adjani since. Disturbing, unnerving, and confusing, Possession is more of an emotional experience than a linear narrative, and there’s nothing else like it. Of course, it wasn’t a huge hit upon release, but it has emerged as a strong cult favorite in recent years.

Żuławski’s film recently received a new 4K restoration: “Banned upon release in 1981, Żuławski’s stunningly choreographed nightmare of a marriage unraveling is an experience unlike any other. Professional spy Mark (Neill) returns to his West Berlin home to find his wife Anna (Adjani) insistent on a divorce. As Anna’s frenzied behavior becomes ever more alarming, Mark discovers a truth more sinister than his wildest suspicions. With its pulsating score, visceral imagery, and some of the most haunting performances ever captured on screen, Possession is cinematic delirium at its most intoxicating.”

Pattinson is producing via his production company Icki Eneo Arlo, but there’s no confirmation at this time whether he’ll join the cast. Also producing is Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee, who helped produce Zach Cregger’s breakout Barbarian.

Pattinson most recently starred in 2022’s The Batman and will return in January 2025 with Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17. As for Finn, look for Smile 2 to arrive in theaters this Halloween season.

With a bidding war underway for Possession, expect to hear more details on this project soon. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, Żuławski’s Possession is currently available to stream on Shudder.

“She’s mine, and I’m hers.”

The prison movie is a cornerstone of the cinematic landscape. Often adjacent to horror, there’s something inherently horrific about a building full of “convicts” jockeying for power. Criminal masterminds and the wrongfully convicted alike become pawns in a dehumanizing system and struggle to stay alive in the restrictive environment. Claire Denis pushes this genre to its outer limits with sci-fi and horror elements comparing incarceration to the prison of the human body. Her 2018 film High Life follows a group of prisoners turned astronauts who struggle to retain their humanity after the world has cast them out.

When we first meet Monte (Robert Pattinson), he’s raising a toddler on an isolated space station in the galaxy’s outer reaches. His daughter Willow was conceived through assault by fellow inmate Dr. Dibs (Juliette Binoche) as a part of her mission to reproduce in space. As Denis unpacks the story of this troubled crew, they slowly realize they have been discarded and forgotten. Some find freedom to enact their violent agendas while others try to retain a semblance of normalcy in the extreme environment. Essentially guinea pigs, Monte and his crewmates hurtle through space and grope for a reason to keep existing.

The Lady Killers continue Killer Moms Month with Claire Denis’ beautifully complex film. Co-hosts Jenn Adams, Mae Shults, Rocco T. Thompson, and Sammie Kuykendall chart the mysteries of the cosmos in their quest to understand the glacial plot. They’ll chat about screaming babies, space gardens, black holes and spaghetti along with heavier themes like reproduction and bodily autonomy. Why is Dr. Dibbs so obsessed with pregnancy? Why doesn’t Monte partake of the sex box? Does Mia Goth actually have a big booty and what really happened on that spaceship filled with dogs? They’ll approach the black hole and try to withstand spaghettification while zeroing in on the unpleasant themes of this exceptional film.

Originally set for release in 2025, it has been announced by Warner Bros. today that hotly anticipated sequel The Batman Part II will now be releasing in theaters much later.

Robert Pattinson’s Batman returns to theaters on October 2, 2026.

Matt Reeves will return to write and direct the sequel. Additionally, we recently learned that the sequel’s script is being written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin (The Batman).

The Batman was a huge box office hit for DC & WB back in 2022, the latest live action take on the iconic Caped Crusader crossing $770 million at the worldwide box office.

No plot details for The Batman 2 are available at this time, but a deleted scene from the first movie suggests we could be seeing more of Barry Keoghan‘s Joker down the road.

A spinoff series centered on Colin Farrell’s “Penguin” is also coming soon.

In The Batman…

“Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

“When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Paul Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.”

In the wake of the Oscar-winning Parasite, Bong Joon-ho will return with the brand new sci-fi movie Mickey 17, which has been getting bumped all over the release calendar.

Recently moved to March 29, 2024, we’ve learned tonight that Mickey 17 has once again been bumped. This time all the way out of 2024. It now hits theaters on January 31, 2025.

Robert Pattinson stars alongside Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, Mark Ruffalo and Naomi Ackie in Mickey 17, a science fiction thriller based on a 2022 novel.

Here’s the plot synopsis for Edward Ashton’s book, via Amazon…

“The Martian meets Dark Matter in Edward Ashton’s high concept science fiction thriller, in which Mickey7, an “expendable,” refuses to let his replacement clone Mickey8 take his place.”

“Dying isn’t any fun…but at least it’s a living.

“Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever there’s a mission that’s too dangerous―even suicidal―the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his deal…and why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.

“On a fairly routine scouting mission, Mickey7 goes missing and is presumed dead. By the time he returns to the colony base, surprisingly helped back by native life, Mickey7’s fate has been sealed. There’s a new clone, Mickey8, reporting for Expendable duties. The idea of duplicate Expendables is universally loathed, and if caught, they will likely be thrown into the recycler for protein.

“Mickey7 must keep his double a secret from the rest of the colony. Meanwhile, life on Niflheim is getting worse. The atmosphere is unsuitable for humans, food is in short supply, and terraforming is going poorly. The native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, and that curiosity has Commander Marshall very afraid. Ultimately, the survival of both lifeforms will come down to Mickey7.

“That is, if he can just keep from dying for good.”

Despite putting together a great cast, the serial killer comedy Average Height, Average Build from Oscar-winning filmmaker Adam McKay (Vice, Don’t Look Up) is no longer in the works.

Per Deadline, the filmmaker is opting to direct a climate-related project next and will no longer be helming the serial killer comedy. McKay had penned Average Height, Average Build and brought the project to Netflix, and there is currently no plans to move forward with the film without him.

Average Height, Average Build was announced earlier this year, with Robert Pattinson, Amy Adams, Robert Downey Jr., Forest Whitaker and Danielle Deadwyler set to lead the cast of the upcoming genre comedy. What a tremendous cast assembled, too.

In the film, Pattinson was to play “a serial killer who enlists a lobbyist (Adams) to change laws that will allow him to get away with murder more easily. Downey was to play a retired cop who won’t give up on the murders, and the killer tries to prevent him from dogging his trail now that he’s hung up his gun. The serial killer turns himself into a cause celebre, a Mr. Smith Goes to Washington figure shielding his true motives.”

While this means we won’t be seeing Pattinson play a serial killer in the near future, we can next look forward to seeing him lead Bong Joon-ho’s upcoming sci-fi feature Mickey 17 before donning the Batman mask once more for Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II.

McKay’s 2021 film Don’t Look Up centered on the climate crisis, and the filmmaker has been active outside the industry in raising awareness. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards and performed very well on Netflix. So, it’s no surprise that he’s shifted focus for his next directing project and seeks to continue working with the streaming platform.

With Rocksteady and WB Games’ iconic Batman: Arkham Trilogy arriving next month on the Nintendo Switch, fans have been eager to see what we’re getting in terms of the new suit inspired by Robert Pattinson‘s appearance as The Dark Knight in The Batman. Now, thanks to the new launch trailer, not only do we have a better look at the suit, but we also know that it’s arriving for free on launch day.

For those not in the know, the suit was prematurely released on other platforms for Batman: Arkham Knight before being quickly removed. It’s now confirmed that the suit is a timed exclusive, and will be available for Batman: Arkham Trilogy when it launches on the Nintendo Switch on December 1. As for the PC, PlayStation and Xbox versions, the suit will arrive on those platforms on December 15th.

The Batman: Arkham Trilogy brings the acclaimed trio of Arkham games to the Switch, complete with all of the previously-released DLC. And yes, that DLC also includes the once-exclusive PlayStation 3 content for Batman: Arkham Asylum that saw you play as The Joker. You can pre-order the collection now via the Nintendo eShop.

The games in the collection —Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Knight— can also be found on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, and the Xbox One.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Adam McKay (Vice, Don’t Look Up) is putting together one hell of a cast for his next movie, a serial killer comedy titled Average Height, Average Build.

Deadline reports that Robert Pattinson, Amy Adams, Robert Downey Jr., Forest Whitaker and Danielle Deadwyler will lead the cast of the upcoming genre comedy.

The site notes, “The script and that package is out to studios and streamers, and the intention is to get it into production by late summer or early fall.”

The plot for Average Height, Average Build? It sounds like a social satire/commentary, with Robert Pattinson playing a serial killer. Deadline details, “Pattinson will play a serial killer who enlists a lobbyist (Adams) to change laws that will allow him to get away with murder more easily. Downey Jr’s role is a retired cop who won’t give up on the murders, and the killer tries to prevent him from dogging his trail now that he’s hung up his gun.”

Deadline further details the storyline for McKay’s next movie, “The serial killer turns himself into a cause celebre, a Mr. Smith Goes To Washington figure shielding his true motives.”

Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

Profound Fart Work

August has been a whirlwind month of far-ranging films! Trace and I started with our first John Carpenter in the made-for-TV film Someone’s Watching Me!, then moved on to Clive Barker’s ambitious Nightbreed before jetting across the world to tackle Michele Soavi’s Giallo/Slasher film Stage Fright.

Now we’re back Stateside with Robert Eggers‘ inky black and white masterpiece: 2019’s The Lighthouse.

In the film, Robert Pattinson plays Winslow, a rookie lighthouse keeper partnered with an older – and more controlling – older man (Willem Dafoe) for a one month stint manning the titular instrument on a deserted island. Despite warnings to the contrary, Winslow kills a sea bird and the two men are swept up in a storm that seems to upend time (and maybe space?).

Oh, and there’s plenty of homoeroticism and farting!

Wise people say the worst pain for a parent is burying a child. Hard to disagree with that statement, but the opposite is no picnic either. A child losing a parent at an early age changes their psychology and emotional makeup. Bruce Wayne is perhaps pop culture’s best—and worst—example of the trauma of burying a mom or dad. Matt Reeves’ The Batman dives headfirst into that angle of Bruce’s world. Sure, it’s about Riddler terrorizing Gotham City’s corrupt hierarchy, but it also explores the psyche of a young man living in his own personal hell. While filled with scary movie imagery and homages to the genre, The Batman soars when it examines the horror of living with post-traumatic disorder (PTSD).

Calling Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne “emo” is reductive and misses the point. His Bruce spends most of his time as Batman, lives in the Batcave, and flinches at the mere sight of his parents because he’s in pain. Exploring grief and trauma is a recent trend in horror. And after the last several years on this blue ball, who can blame them? What puts The Batman on the same level as Hereditary, Halloween (2018), or Doctor Sleep is its commitment to allowing the main character to wallow. Bruce loses his parents when he’s in elementary school. Making matters worse, he partially blames himself for their deaths. Why would he want to wake up every day and be “the prince of the city”? At that point, being Bruce Wayne at all is hard enough, let alone being that specific version. We learn his parents died 20 years before the film’s events, but Bruce relives that moment he’s on patrol every night. His pain makes an early moment in the story one of its most poignant and touching.

On their way out of a crime scene, lieutenant Gordon tells Batman the mayor’s son found his father’s dead body wrapped in tape. Batman comes to a complete stop when he sees the boy in his room as cops pepper him with questions. This is a man who gets it. He knows what the kid is feeling and what the kid will feel. They’re a part of the same awful club, only there are no cool jackets or membership dues. Only a lot of anger and even more tears as a barrier to entry. At that moment, at least one other person in the room relates to that kid’s personal scary movie. Horror movies usually show us groups of people dealing with their own big bad wolves outside the door. Yes, there’s strength in numbers, but there are also perks to having a support system. However, The Batman illustrates how lonely it is recovering from the kind of trauma Bruce and the mayor’s son suffered.

Horror often deals with external forces dragging us into a ring of hades or creating a monster to manifest our internal anxieties. But what if we are the monster? Those on this side of the screen don’t have Michael Myers or a Babadook as approximations. For us, we are our worst enemies while grieving. And so is Bruce. The Batman tells us Bruce is a creature of the night nonstop because it channels his rage. “I’m vengeance” isn’t just a cute quote for t-shirts; they’re the words of a young man working through many issues. Carrying a burden that heavy for so long extracts a heavy psychological toll. One not measured in dollars or cents but drops of humanity. That’s why Bruce lashes out at Alfred at certain moments in the movie or seemingly cares very little for Selina Kyle’s situation or well-being. He scoffs at Alfred’s “parental” instincts and sees Selina as nothing more than a means to an end because tearing down his emotional walls makes him vulnerable to hurt.

It’s hard opening to any type of emotional pain after losing anyone, let alone parents. At that point, there are two horrors from which to choose: isolation or heartbreak. Neither is particularly pleasant, but at least the former is within one’s control. That compulsion Bruce has in The Batman to detect, investigate, and see all the angles? That’s not just the sign of someone aiming for the “World’s Greatest Detective” crown. Those are hallmarks of someone living through trauma and doing everything in their power to control every situation. Which, to most people, sounds crazy. How can anyone possibly have a handle on everything life throws their way? After suffering such a horrific loss, that type of logic bears no meaning. The goal is to ensure life never catches you off guard like that ever again.

Imagine waking up every day hoping the worst thing to ever happen to you is a nightmare. Imagine waking up every day realizing your dreams are often better than your reality. Eat your heart out, Alanis Morissette. Bruce never gives himself the time, or the permission, to get out of that space. He owns property in a state of mind where every reminder hurts, every memory cuts, and no one helps because they’re not allowed to even try.

As Batman, Bruce exposes that very raw nerve every night and channels it into rage or dogmatic dedication to his chosen crimefighting craft. But by the final credits, he realizes one horror begets another. Batman cannot make an actual difference in Gotham until Bruce Wayne allows his scars to heal. Or, at the least, applies ointment and a few bandages to help the healing process. Unlike most horror movies, The Batman states the protagonist cannot continue the cycle of violence while providing him an actual moment of clarity. Major trauma takes time to process, and while no one with two eyes and a brain can say Bruce is truly healed at the end of the movie, he is better. That’s a victory because the man who spends his nights fighting monsters has one less internal one to battle.

The Batman is now available on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD.

In the wake of the Oscar-winning Parasite, Bong Joon-ho is directing an adaptation of the sci-fi thriller novel Mickey7, with production expected to kick off as we head into the summer.

Deadline reports today that pre-production on the untitled movie is underway at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden, with Robert Pattinson starring alongside Toni Collette.

Mark Ruffalo and Naomi Ackie will also star.

Published back in February, Mickey7 is described as a “science fiction thriller,” and it was written by Edward Ashton. Here’s the plot synopsis for the book, via Amazon…

Deadline notes, “While the film will be inspired by the novel, sources say that given Bong’s past experiences with adaptations, his version might ultimately be different from the novel.”

Bloody Disgusting’s The Batman review is spoiler-free.

Director/Co-writer Matt Reeves establishes his cinematic take on The Batman will be unlike any that has come before with an opening scene straight out of a horror movie. A masked, raspy-breathed serial killer stalks and ruthlessly slaughters his prey on Halloween night; an intense and eerie sequence made even more so by Michael Giacchino‘s piercing instrumentals. The inciting event unfurls a masterful and heady introspection on heroism, told with foreboding grit and intensity atypical of the genre.

Reeves and co-writer Peter Craig wisely bypass the origin story; this is a Batman (Robert Pattinson) already well entrenched in his mission to clean up Gotham. So much so that police commissioner James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) pulls him in to investigate the grisly murder that opened the film, much to the dismay of his peers. Of course, a card addressed to Batman at the crime scene also inspired Gordon’s choice. Batman isn’t the only one wanting to expose and clean up Gotham’s corrupt, seedy underbelly; a sadistic serial killer has set up a deranged game that forces Batman to investigate both the city’s corruption and his involvement as orphaned heir Bruce Wayne.

It’s that central investigation that creates a very different film than we’ve seen before for its eponymous character. The Batman bears more in common with David Fincher’s Seven than the standard, action-heavy superhero output. Reeves’s Gotham is a rainy, somber city full of grime and broken dreams. It’s a gothic setting where criminals thrive, and naïve dreamers get discarded or worse. In other words, much of The Batman’s narrative plays out like a horror-noir crime thriller, creating a tactile, complex world with deeply flawed characters in the process.

Pattinson leads a riveting cast as the brooding vigilante who has all but discarded the persona beneath the mask. The emotional scars that fuel Pattinson’s iteration, as well as his reckoning with Batman’s impact, make for a heady and compelling journey. Wright brings the light to Batman’s darkness, and Gotham’s sole beacon of hope and purity makes for an engaging and unexpected partnership. Zoë Kravitz holds her own as Selina Kyle, a savvy yet impulsive character that plays by her own rules and moral code. Her chemistry with Pattinson is electric. John Turturro brings palpable menace to Carmine Falcone, and an unrecognizable Colin Farrell offers levity as Oswald Cobblepot. But Paul Dano is utterly chilling; his unhinged serial killer ensures The Batman‘s stakes remain high.

THE BATMAN

One of the more fascinating elements of Reeves’ take is how close to the brink Batman perpetually comes to allowing the dark to consume him. In giving himself so entirely to vigilantism, exposing him so fully to humanity’s worst, it threatens to diminish the remnants of Bruce Wayne. How the narrative forces him to confront that in the thrilling, massively scoped climax lends emotional weight that gives depth to the action. Reeves’ framing and composition inspire awe.

The Batman is a stunning descent into organized crime and an exploration of the psychological toll it takes on Gotham. The murder-mystery pulls both its titular vigilante and the viewer deep into the complicated, richly textured world that prompts questions of character motivations and morality. Reeves entrenches his flawed characters in a grimy, gritty city washed in blood red and pitch-black shadows. Yet he injects enough levity to break up the dour mood when necessary. The horror-noir tone and the crime thriller journey make for a very different version of the character than we’ve seen yet. Considering how many character iterations we’ve received in the last decade alone, that’s saying a lot. Reeves and Pattinson leave us eager to see more from this gloomy, Gothic Gotham and its deeply flawed denizens.

The Batman releases in theaters on March 4, 2022.

Bloody Disgusting has just scored three clips from The Batman, which flies into theaters March 4 from director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield).

The new footage is action-packed and highlights a fresh take on the character, of course led by Robert Pattinson as Batman/Bruce Wayne. In one clip, Batman punches Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) in the face and attempts to evade an entire station of police officers. He has to use one of his wonderful toys to escape.

There’s another clip that gives us a taste of one of the many run-ins between Batman and Zoë Kravitz‘s Catwoman, with the two exchanging several kicks and punches.

Lastly, Colin Farrell‘s Penguin is being chased down by Batman and thinks he’s escaped. He hasn’t…

Here’s the full official plot synopsis for The Batman…

From director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield), The Batman will release in theaters on March 4, but just how dark and horror-heavy should we expect this new take on the Dark Knight to be?

Speaking with Moviemaker Magazine (via The Wrap), Reeves calls The Batman “almost a horror movie” when teasing the vibe of his spin on “the world’s greatest detective.”

“This idea of a place that is corrupt, and you try to swim against the tide in order to fight against it and make a difference, is quintessential Batman,” Reeves explains. “And at the center of those noir stories is almost always the detective, right? And that’s why he is the world’s greatest detective. And so this story is, in addition to being almost a horror movie, and a thriller, and an action movie, at its core, it’s also very much a detective story.”

Leading man Robert Pattinson tells the same outlet, “In the first meeting, he was saying, we want to lean into the ‘world’s greatest detective aspect,’ and be a detective noir movie. And, you know, normally when directors say that, they just do like a mood board, and it’s just about the imagery. But I read the script, and it is! It’s a detective movie. It happens all the time in the graphic novels, but it’s always kind of on the backburner in the movies.”

Reeves also explains to Moviemaker Magazine, “The premise of the movie is that the Riddler is kind of molded in an almost Zodiac Killer sort of mode, and is killing very prominent figures in Gotham, and they are the pillars of society. These are supposedly legitimate figures. It begins with the mayor, and then it escalates from there. And in the wake of the murders, he reveals the ways in which these people were not everything they said they were, and you start to realize there’s some kind of association.”

Reeves had previously cited Stephen King’s Christine as an inspiration on The Batman, particularly the approach to bringing his new version of the Batmobile to the big screen.

Here’s the full official plot synopsis for The Batman…

What’s next from Bong Joon Ho? In the wake of the Oscar-winning Parasite, Deadline reports that the filmmaker’s next looks to be an adaptation of upcoming sci-fi novel Mickey7.

Being published next month, Mickey7 is described as a “science fiction thriller,” and it was written by Edward Ashton. Here’s the plot synopsis for the book, via Amazon…

Additionally, Deadline reports today that Robert Pattinson is in talks to star in the Warner Bros. feature film, which Bong Joo Ho is planning on writing, directing, and producing.

Deadline notes, “While the film will be inspired by the novel, sources say that given Bong’s past experiences with adaptations, his version might ultimately may be different from the novel’s.”

From director Matt Reeves, The Batman will release in theaters on March 4, 2022, a brand new reboot that includes everyone from Catwoman to the Riddler and the Penguin.

The film has now received an official rating from the MPA, and while The Batman has been rated “PG-13,” it sounds like there’s still plenty of darkness to be found here.

The Batman is rated PG-13 for…

“Strong violent and disturbing content, drug content, strong language, and some suggestive material.”

Of course, it’s no big surprise that the new Batman movie is coming to theaters with a PG-13 rating, even in the wake of 2019’s The Joker and its notable “R” rating. That was a much darker movie centered on a murderous villain, after all, while superhero movies tend to be of the PG-13 variety. But “strong violent and disturbing content,” well, we sure do love to hear that!

Here’s the full official plot synopsis for The Batman…

This synopsis sheds more light on what we can expect from the latest in a long line of Batman movies, taking us into a dark underworld that’s filled with some of Batman’s most iconic foes…

The Batman has faced both production stoppages and release date delays due to the ongoing pandemic, and had been originally scheduled to be released on June 25th, 2021.

Junji Ito meets Robert Eggers in a special promotion for the upcoming theatrical release of The Lighthouse over in Japan, we’ve learned, with Ito turning the film into a manga!

The Twitter account @MangaMoguraRE reports, “Junji Ito created a summary manga for black & white horror movie The Lighthouse starring Robert Pattinson & Willem Dafoe that will be distributed in Japanese cinemas to promote its theatrical release in Japan on July 9.”

Yahoo explains in further detail, “The Lighthouse was supposed to be released in Japan last year but was delayed to July 9, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To support the film, Ito has created an 8-page manga explaining the story of the film that will be distributed to moviegoers who buy a ticket.”

The Lighthouse stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as two lighthouse keepers slowly losing their grip on reality. A24 describes the black & white film as “a hypnotic and hallucinatory tale of two lighthouse keepers on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.” The perfect tale for Junji Ito to interpret in his own iconic style? You bet.

Author Donald Ray Pollock‘s works have been referred to as “Hillbilly Gothic” or “Southern Ohio Gothic.” His debut novel, The Devil All the Time, earned accolades and praise for its blood-soaked noir and sprawling story spanning families in the rural underbellies of Southern Ohio and West Virginia. The precise type of epic tale that begged for adaptation. Netflix’s latest adapts Pollock’s novel with the exact level of scope and care it deserves, offering an expansive ensemble Southern Gothic thriller oozing with unrelenting dread from start to finish.

Spanning between World War II and the Vietnam war, The Devil All the Time begins with the introduction to Willard Russell (Bill Skarsgård), a man left disturbed and deeply religious by his tour of duty. Willard’s struggle to find peace and raise a family serves as the entry point for both this world and its long cast of characters, all of which converge around his son, Arvin (Tom Holland). Arvin is fiercely devoted to those he loves most, and that includes protecting them at any cost in a backwoods town full of corruption and evil at every turn. That consists of a crooked sheriff (Sebastian Stan), an unholy preacher (Robert Pattinson), and serial killing couple Carl and Sandy Henderson (Jason Clarke and Riley Keough). That’s only the tip of the iceberg.

There’s a lot of ground to cover in this near two-and-a-half-hour runtime, and director Antonio Campos hits the gas straightaway, presenting a series of scenes shifted back and forth in time over a roughly seven-year period. It’s a little jarring at first but quickly settles into a rhythm. It helps that the story is narrated by author Pollock himself, his southern drawl befitting not just of the setting but the languid pace. That’s not a flaw. Every bit of this film is riveting, as there seems to be no end to its depravity.

In a script he co-wrote with Paulo Campos, Campos deftly shifts focus between the characters, very few of them wholesome or morally pure. Religion, especially in small towns like Knockemstiff, Ohio, is a significant foundation of the community, yet it’s often a corruptive power. For some, religion grants delusions of grandeur that leads to murder. For others, it offers a false sense of security in hardship, or an authority to inflict abuse. For Arvin, religion has mostly dealt him a life of tragedy. This theme works as the undercurrent of a series of increasingly disturbing acts of violence.

Because this film is so densely packed, some of the character arcs do feel abridged. We barely see Carl and Sandy meet-cute, and the next time we see them, they’ve already married and began their murder spree. It teases out their method of luring unsuspecting hitchhikers to their doom, and sometimes graphically shows what happens to them. Mostly, though, Campos prompts the viewer to fill in the gaps through brief moments, dialogue, and photographs. There’s more to these characters than the film has time to spend. Luckily, there’s enough destructive evil in this world to compensate, and Campos never loses sight of Arvin, the film’s most morally conflicted protagonist. He’s the one the offers the most rooting interest, and as such, provides much of the suspense. This cruel world chews up and spits out the kind-hearted, making it not such a safe bet that Arvin will survive it.

The Devil All the Time makes for one grim foray into a ruthless Southern Gothic setting. It is a hard-boiled, blood-soaked story full of unsettled mood and unrelenting dread, with an impressive cast that sells every second of it. Even when the script short changes them, only due to the source material’s magnitude, it’s an ambitious effort that mesmerizes. That the runtime zips by and leaves you hanging for more, despite how final things conclude, speaks volumes of this dark, often depressing thriller.

The Devil All the Time releases on Netflix on September 16, 2020.

“I’m vengeance.”

The main event of the virtual DC FanDome event is here, with the first official trailer for the Matt Reeves-directed The Batman making its way onto the internet tonight. And this is, much to our surprise and delight, no short-and-sweet little tease for the movie. Rather, DC puts a smile on our face with a 2-minute trailer that’s loaded with footage and plot details.

Robert Pattinson is of course playing Batman/Bruce Wayne for this particular take on the character, and though several DC villains are in the mix, it’s looking like Paul Dano‘s Riddler is going to be the main adversary he’s up against. The trailer also gives us our first looks at Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon and Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman.

Promising a dark detective thriller and one badass Caped Crusader who’s clearly taking no shit, Reeves’ The Batman looks like the kind of Batman movie horror fans in particular are going to love. The movie may not exist in the same world as Todd Phillips’ Joker but it’s at least cut from a similar cloth, favoring grounded-in-reality darkness over action spectacle.

Enjoy your first look at The Batman below, which still has much filming left to do. In fact, according to Reeves during the FanDome panel tonight, it’s only 25% in the can right now!

Additional cast includes Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Penguin, and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone. Jayme Lawson and Peter Sarsgaard will also star.

Warner Bros/DC’s The Batman is currently set for release on October 1st, 2021.

While theaters will attempt to open later this month, Netflix is kicking off their fall schedule with The Devil All the Time, a star-studded midwestern gothic about a serial killer couple, a faith-testing preacher and a corrupt local sheriff.

Set to premiere globally on September 16th, the film is brimming with big names including Spider-Man‘s Tom Holland, It Chapter One and Two‘s Bill Skarsgård, The Lodge‘s Riley Keough, and Pet Sematary‘s Jason Clarke with Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse, The Batman) and Mia Wasikowska (Stoker, Crimson Peak).

In the film from director Antonio Campos…

“In Knockemstiff, Ohio and its neighboring backwoods, sinister characters — an unholy preacher (Pattinson), twisted couple (Clarke and Keough), and crooked sheriff (Sebastian Stan) — converge around young Arvin Russell (Holland) as he fights the evil forces that threaten him and his family.”

If ever there’s a perfect genre movie to encapsulate that cabin-fever madness many of us are likely feeling about now, it’s Robert Eggers’ sophomore feature The Lighthouse, currently available to stream on Prime Video. A hallucinatory tale of two lighthouse keepers struggling to maintain a semblance of sanity during their stint on a remote, isolated New England isle makes for one hell of a visual journey rife with dread, farts, and mermaids. It’s also not always the easiest to decode. True to form, Eggers’ submersion into the period and an over meticulousness in research mean The Lighthouse is a richly layered folktale offering new insights with every watch. Hark, Triton! Hark! There be plot spoilers ahead.

Co-written with his brother Max, Robert Eggers’ revealed in an interview that it was a true-life tragedy that inspired the barebones outline of The Lighthouse, one that’s turned into a folktale over the years. That tragedy, known as the Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy or Incident, changed the way British lighthouses were operated. In 1801, keepers Thomas Griffith and Thomas Howell were stationed at the aging lighthouse on a small, rocky island twenty miles west of Wales. It was widely known that the pair didn’t get along in the best of circumstances, often fighting and threatening bodily harm. So, when Griffith died in a freak accident, Howell was too afraid to cast the body out to sea; he assumed everyone would suspect him of murdering Griffith.

Instead, Howell built a coffin for Griffith and tied it to the rocks outside the keeper’s house while he continued his duties of keeping the beacon lit. Over the winter, waves battered the coffin against the rocks, and the corpse along with it, making its arm appear to wave and beckon. The beckoning arm and isolation broke Howell down over time, so when his replacements arrived to relieve him, he was unrecognizable. Henceforth, it was mandated that lighthouse teams be comprised of three men, not two.

In Eggers’ The Lighthouse, that’s the exact setup; Thomas Howard (Robert Pattinson) and Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) are stationed on a rocky isle to man the lighthouse for a month, and their drastically different personalities cause them to clash almost constantly.

There’s a bit more to Howard and Wake, though; they represent Greek myths Prometheus and Proteus, respectively. Prometheus was a Titan with a reputation as a trickster. He stole fire from Olympus and gave it to humanity, which enraged Zeus. As punishment, Zeus chained him to a rock. In The Lighthouse, Howard is a trickster in the sense that he hides his true identity for most of the film; he assumes the identity of Ephraim Winslow, a man he killed during his tenure as a lumberjack. The rock that he’s tethered to is both the island and the consistent chores that Wake gives him. He’s drawn to the lighthouse beacon throughout the film, but Wake continuously denies him. That beacon likely represents the forbidden knowledge of Mount Olympus. The knowledge that ultimately proves too much for his mind to bear. The final parting shot of Howard is of seabirds pecking away at his organs, another nod to the myth; Zeus ensured that an eagle would feast on Prometheus’s liver each day as part of his punishment.

As for Wake, he’s the Old Man of the Sea or sea-god Proteus. One of Proteus’s most common places of dwelling were islands. He was prophetic and knew all things past, present, and future. Above all, though, he hated revealing what he knew. This tracks with Wake’s character, depicted as an older, wiser superior to Howard that keeps his real thoughts relegated to a journal. One that Howard finds in the final act, with disastrous results. Proteus was a shapeshifter with dominion over the sea and its creatures. This again tracks with the actions of Wake throughout the narrative. Mostly, Proteus was unpredictable in behavior. It’s this aspect that fuels the contentious relationship between the lighthouse keepers. As far as Wake is concerned, this island is his domain, and everything on and around it belongs to him. His mood is consistently erratic; when Howard confesses to not liking Wake’s cooking, Wake invokes Poseidon and unleashes an eerie sea curse upon Howard. It’s an over-the-top, wrathful response to the insult.

Greek myths and true-life inspired folktales don’t precisely scream horror, though, do they? While it’s clear that Eggers is playing around with genre here, the horror is built into the spiraling insanity of the two men. In the dread as they escalate their violence. Moreover, it’s baked into the Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart” parallels of the Small Lighthouse Tragedy. Eggers revealed that he drew from H.P. Lovecraft’s Weird Tales pulp magazines, too, but less in the sense of Elder Things and more fear of the unknown tinged with the supernatural. The Lighthouse draws from the weirdness of the magazines, and the tension the stories evoked. That Eggers injects plenty of humor into the film further blurs the genre lines.

The way Eggers presents this maddening tale of identity and unraveling sanity amidst a mythical period backdrop leaves much up to the viewer to parse through and decipher. However, you can bet every visual, frame, and seemingly throwaway line of dialogue serves a purpose. Two movies in and the filmmaker has demonstrated an obsessive level of detail in his craft. Whereas The Witch offers a straightforward horror folktale, The Lighthouse presents an almost unquantifiable folktale as unpredictable as the sea itself.

Both exploring vastly different but equally dark corners of New England.

After already arriving on VOD platforms, The Lighthouse comes ashore on DVD and Blu-ray (plus Digital) January 7, 2020, from Lionsgate. Extra features include not only deleted scenes, but also “The Lighthouse: A Dark & Stormy Tale” featurette and audio commentary from filmmaker Robert Eggers.

Bloody Disgusting has an exclusive clip from the featurette in which Eggers explains Dafoe’s authentic sea captain dialect, while the actor talks about his preparation for the role.

Docking within our list of the best horror films of 2019, The Lighthouse is truly “a nightmare at sea,” one that shows shades of Sam Raimi’s filmmaking prowess and carries the madness of Evil Dead II.

Never insult a man’s cooking.

In just two minutes you’ll know if A24’s The Lighthouse is for you.

Directed by The Witch‘s Robert Eggers, The Lighthouse follows two lighthouse keepers (played by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson) who are stranded on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.

This clip comes from one of the film’s most intense and hilarious scenes after the duo has been stranded for an unknown amount of time. The two have grown increasingly frustrated with each other and Pattison’s character is sick of Dafoe’s lobster. He insults the man’s cooking, which sends Dafoe into a hysterical curse-filled rage that makes you wonder what would happen if he were to be sent even more over the edge.

The Lighthouse is truly “a nightmare at sea,” one that shows shades of Sam Raimi’s filmmaking prowess and carries the madness of Evil Dead II. See this immediately before it leaves theaters. If this clip doesn’t make you cackle with glee, don’t even bother.

A24 is changing the merchandising game with their short-print and ultra-cool items that pop up and vanish from their store as quickly as we can report about them.

As a tie in for their soon-to-be-award-winning The Lighthouse, A24 has released a grooming kit that would be perfect for the film’s two lighthouse keepers (played by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson) who are stranded on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.

Included in the set is one scented beard oil fit for a sea king and also lathering soap for the lusty seaman. If you’ve seen the film, the soap should make you extraordinarily uncomfortable.

According to the site, the items smell of sea foam, black waves, biblical storms, and debauchery. Live deliciously, amirite?
