Synopsis: Young couple Bea and Paul have just married and have set out to a secluded lakeside cabin in the woods for their honeymoon. Despite some strange behavior from the locals, their honeymoon is off to a swimming start. Until Bea goes missing in the middle of the night. Paul finds her naked and disoriented in the woods, with no memory of how or why she got there. Her behavior only grows more distant and bizarre from there, and a concerned Paul tries to solve the mystery of what’s happening to his wife.

Key Players: Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie is Bea, and Penny Dreadful’s Harry Treadaway is Paul. Ben Huber and Hanna Brown make up the rest of the cast in this tiny feature.

Why It’s on the List: This selection brings some variety to the 31 Days of Halloween, in tone and subgenre. It’s a small feature, which means small cast and a quiet, meditative style, but Leslie and Treadaway turn in some captivating performances that keep you engaged. Janiak doesn’t wait long to give you an inkling of what’s happening, but she keeps the audience off-kilter enough with dramatic shifts that means it’s difficult to predict how everything will end. And if you’ve never seen this before, there’s no way to prepare for how disturbing things will get. Paranoia, intense emotion, and some seriously creepy moments. Horror has taught us time and time again to steer clear of the woods, but Honeymoon presents a wholly new and unique reason to steer clear.

Who Did Paul Marry?: The stranger that Bea behaves, the more Paul begins to question who he actually married. Understandably. But this is a horror movie, and those answers come with a whole set of their own problems. And they’re best discovered going in blind. So no clip, but here’s a tease.

Where You Can Watch: Honeymoon is currently available on Shudder, Magnolia Selects, and Hulu streaming services.

Watch this deleted scene in which Kate Mara (“American Horror Story”) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight) discuss whether or not Morgan is a child.

Morgan also stars Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch), Rose Leslie, Boyd Holbrook, and Paul Giamatti.

In a really exciting tie-in, scientists at IBM Research have collaborated with Fox to create the first-ever cognitive movie trailer for the movie Morgan.

It’s incredibly interesting to see how an A.I. interprets footage, while the trailer itself is beyond frightening. I wonder if the A.I. also chose the score, and if so, Skynet is coming.

Following the trailer is an interesting featurette on the process, which is highlighted by the following:

Utilizing experimental Watson APIs and machine learning techniques, the IBM Research system analyzed hundreds of horror/thriller movie trailers. After learning what keeps audiences on the edge of their seats, the AI system suggested the top 10 best candidate moments for a trailer from the movie ‘Morgan’, which an IBM filmmaker then edited and arranged together.

Kate Mara plays a corporate troubleshooter who is sent to a remote, top-secret location, where she is to investigate and evaluate a terrifying accident. She learns the event was triggered by a seemingly innocent “human,” who presents a mystery of both infinite promise and incalculable danger.

Anya Taylor-Joy, Toby Jones, Rose Leslie, Boyd Holbrook, Michelle Yeoh, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Paul Giamatti also star.

But I digress, these are allegedly two of the world’s most advanced robots – magicLab’s EDI (Electronic Deceptive Intelligence) and the University of Pisa’s FACE (Facial Automation for Conveying Emotions). These bots are further evidence that we’re never going to see the general public using flying cars in our lifetime.

Oh yeah, there’s a new clip, too. I added that below the actual creepy video….

In Luke Scott’s Morgan, releasing September 2, a corporate troubleshooter (Kate Mara) is sent to a remote, top-secret location, where she is to investigate and evaluate a terrifying accident. She learns the event was triggered by a seemingly innocent “human,” who presents a mystery of both infinite promise and incalculable danger.

Haunted is inspired by the 1898 Henry James gothic ghost story “Turn Of the Screw,” and will be scripted by The Conjuring‘s Chad Hayes & Carey Hayes.

Alfre Woodard, pictured below in Annabelle, will be starring in the Gothic ghost story along with “Games of Thrones” and Honeymoon‘s Rose Leslie, above.

The pic’s being produced by Blair Witch, Death Note and The Ring‘s Roy Lee, John Middleton and Scott Bernstein.

The novella’s anonymous narrator is a young woman, a parson’s daughter, who is engaged as governess to two seemingly innocent children at a remote English country house. What initially seems a idyllic soon turns nightmarish, as she becomes convinced that the children are consorting with a pair of malevolent spirits. These are the ghosts of former employees at Bly: a valet and a previous governess. In life, scandalously, the two of them had been discharged as illicit lovers, and their spectral visitations with the children hint at Satanism and possible sexual abuse. The book amply fulfills its pledge, laid down in the first few pages, that nothing can touch it in terms of sheer “dreadful—dreadfulness.” (Amazon)

We now have the art and second trailer for the Luke Scott-directed film that looks like some weird version new interpretation of Powder and Lucy, the latter which ended up being a monster box office success.

I love the poster, which proclaims the film’s title character as “IT,” because she/he was created in a lab. Was alien DNA used? There’s a huge mystery surrounding the story that’s kept in the box even in the second trailer, which feels like imminent doom is upon all of the researchers.

Toby Jones, Rose Leslie, Boyd Holbrook, Michelle Yeoh, Jennifer, Jason Leigh, and Paul Giamatti also star.

The post The ‘Morgan’ Trailer is Gonna to F**k You Up So Hard appeared first on Bloody Disgusting!.

During a prologue set in the 1300s, Kaulder (Vin Diesel) destroys the cause of the Black Death, Witch Queen (Julie Engelbrecht), but not before she curses him with immortality. In the present, Kaulder now acts as a witch hunter, with Dolan the 36th (Michael Caine) acting as his friend and mentor. After an attack leaves Dolan incapacitated, Dolan the 37th (Elijah Wood) steps up to take his place. Kaulder and the new Dolan begin an investigation, eventually teaming up with a local witch named Chloe (Game of Thrones‘ Rose Leslie) who helps them to discover a secret plot to resurrect the Witch Queen and unleash a new plague.

Surprisingly, it is Leslie who is the real star of the film.  She steals nearly every scene she is in. After her star-making turn in last year’s Honeymoon and now, with her ability to make her poorly-written dialogue in The Last Witch Hunter sound convincing, one can hope that we will be seeing more of her in the future. Both Wood and Caine are sorely underused in the film (they pretty much disappear after the first 30 minutes, only to re-appear during the climax). Diesel is the weakest link of the film, spouting off quite a bit of expository dialogue that he doesn’t seem particularly interested in.

Speaking of expository dialogue, The Last Witch Hunter has it in spades. The film apparently thinks the audience is incapable of figuring things out for themselves, as there are voiceovers aplenty and stilted dialogue that sounds forced and out of place, all for the sake of explaining things that you are fairly capable of figuring out yourself. Out of all of the film’s flaws (of which there are many), the dialogue is the most egregious. Critics of CGI will find little to love about The Last Witch Hunter, though there are a few practical effects, mostly involving the Witch Queen, that impress.

The film falls apart in its final act, with an anticlimactic showdown that features editing so choppy that is difficult to ascertain exactly what is happening. It’s also a shame that Leslie is incredibly underserved in the film’s final scenes. The first two acts seem to be setting up Chloe as the real hero of the story, only for her to be relegated to a typical damsel in distress by the time Kaulder faces off with the witch queen. There is also an 11th hour twist that feels contrived and completely shoehorned in. Had the film not gone for the “gotcha!” route, it would have been all the better for it.

This is disappointing since everything that came before, while by no means Oscar-worthy, has been so much fun. Ultimately though, it serves to set up a potential sequel for this would-be franchise. It would be interesting to see where the story (and these characters) go from here, so on that level The Last Witch Hunter is a success, but is it a good sign when the idea of a sequel sounds better than the film you’re already watching?

All of this being said, The Last Witch Hunter is a lot of fun. Dumb fun, to be sure, but fun nonetheless. The fight scenes are highly entertaining and, with the exception of the aforementioned climax, well choreographed. There are moments of humor sprinkled throughout the film that surprisingly work in the film’s favor. It’s also never boring, which is always a plus with mindless action flicks nowadays.

The Last Witch Hunter is harmless action fluff. There isn’t anything particularly memorable about it, but it’s nowhere near the trainwreck people are making it out to be. There are worse ways to spend 100 minutes, and if you can shut your brain off and enjoy the ride, you may just find yourself liking The Last Witch Hunter.

Bea (Rose Leslie) and Paul (Harry Treadaway) are newlyweds, and for their honeymoon, decide to spend several days at Bea’s childhood vacation home. A few days into the trip, things begin getting tense. After an unexpected run-in with Bea’s ex at a diner, Paul wakes to an empty bed. Paul’s search leads him to find Bea outside in the woods naked, and unable to recall how she got there. Bea also has weird marks on her inner thighs, which she writes off as bug bites. Paul is skeptical, but goes on with their honeymoon. However, things start to get more tense as Bea’s behavior becomes increasingly irrational.

The thing that I loved about this film, even after the credits rolled, was the fact that Janiak had perfectly captured what it’s like for some couples considering long-term relationships and marriage. The doubt that creeps into you mind about that other person, and if they’re really who they say they are? Is this ultimately the right choice? It’s all here, and not to make it sound like it’s all gloomy, but you can’t show just the positive aspects or all negative aspects, as that’s not a genuine relationship. Janiak’s writing covers both the good and the bad, which makes the relationship between Bea and Paul feel authentic. It also makes the friction that develops when Bea unexpectedly meets up with her ex (and mixes in English and French while talking to him, alienating the English-only Paul), that much more believable. Great stuff.

Of course, the other half in making this work lies in the actors themselves. And both Harry Treadaway and Rose Leslie nail it. It’s really surprising the chemistry between these two. You’d swear that they were a couple in real life. Not only do these two pull off an almost cloying display of affection for one another at the beginning of the film that, let’s be honest, there are couples who are like that, but they also pull off the increasing friction that comes with a relationship. You can feel the desperation in Paul as he wants to believe Bea, but at the same time is faced with evidence to the contrary that she’s hiding something. Likewise, you feel Bea wants to keep things going in a positive direction, while simultaneously knowing that she can’t keep holding back from Paul.

If there were any negatives, I’d have to say that the ending, while certainly a twist, was kind of “out there” for me. Then again, being involved with such excellent characters, you have a hope that things resolve themselves in a positive manner. They still do, in a way. Just not in what you’d expect. As you could probably tell, I’m not a fan of couples who are all over themselves in love. The “cloying” that I mentioned is really only in the first part of the film, and while I was able to tolerate it, my ‘single mind’ started wishing for a certain machete-wielding masked man to pop up and fix things if it continued any further. Wrong movie, but you get the idea.

It’s certainly a rarity for a writer/director to nail it on their first try, but Leigh Janiak has done it with Honeymoon. The story and script are terrific in getting through to the audience the nature of a long-term relationship, and the difficulties some couples face, even when a relationship’s difficulties (like this one) involve something not so typical. The performances by Leslie and Treadaway are very strong, and completely sell the idea of them being a couple going through increasingly difficult times. And while the ending was a bit of a downer for me, it did have me thinking, which is what a good film should have you doing once the credits rolled around.

Video/Audio:

Presented in 1080p AVC-encoded 1.85:1 widescreen, the transfer looks tasty. The overall picture is sharp, with a consistent colour palette that’s been purposely muted. Black levels are strong and appropriately dark. Picture detail is strong, overall. An excellent transfer.

Like the video transfer, the 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track is great. The wonderful score by Heather McIntosh and the film’s dialogue are nicely balanced, with the dialogue being clear and unobscured. Ambient effects like crickets and wind add depth and immersion to the mix, while action scenes add a nice punch on the lower end of things.

Extras:

Magnolia disappoints again with some lackluster extras. You’d think these companies would spring for something worthwhile to compliment a film they fought for to get the distribution rights.

Starting things off is an interview with actors Rose Leslie and Harry Treadaway. The duo describe their initial thoughts on the script, how they prepared for their roles as newlyweds and how they worked together to create the on-screen relationship.

Following that is an interview with Director Leigh Janiak. Leigh talks about her writing process, the films that inspired her and co-writer Phil Graziadei (Gareth Edwards’ Monsters, for one) and what went into the casting and production.

“The Worm Behind the Scenes” is raw footage of Rose Leslie trying to bait a fishing hook. It’s what you’d expect. “Canoe Behind the Scenes” looks at the troubles that comes with doing your own stunts (and filming) on the water.

AXS TV: A Look at ‘Honeymoon’ is another fluff piece where the film’s trailer is intercut with interviews.

Unfortunately, it’s here, swinging for the fences to distinguish and elevate its characters, that Honeymoon makes its gravest miscalculation – it goes too big. The husband character of Paul (played by Harry Treadaway) is a cloyingly earnest presence who becomes pathologically needy by the end of the film’s first act and begins exuding an unwaveringly jealous rapey vibe by the midway point.

The problem is, Paul’s not a villain. He’s the audience’s access point into the entire thing. After his wife Bea (Rose Leslie) goes missing for a few hours during their up-to-that-point idyllic honeymoon, it becomes increasingly clear that she’s not well. She’s not necessarily being unkind towards him, but there’s a wounded sensitivity there that causes her to pull away from Paul. His response to her withdrawing a bit? To whine and needle and attempt to guilt her into sex at every turn. “I’m your husband,” he proclaims after being spurned (to be clear, they have had plenty of sex up until this point – maybe the lady just wants a day off). He equates physical validation with love at every turn and certainly puts a higher premium on it than trying to help her through whatever she’s going through.

Of course, the reason Bea is behaving differently is that she is different. Some kind of Alien presence is inhabiting her body Almost Human style and is trying to ape her behavior (to what purpose, I’m not sure – though there is some admittedly gooey practical body horror that goes along with this that I quite enjoyed). We should be feeling bad for Paul. This is some tragic sh*t, after all. But when he gets angry that she doesn’t enjoy a lame pantomime involving a frog he’s planning on cooking for dinner – it’s hard not to want to punch him.

In fact, midway through Honeymoon I began wondering if this Alien abduction business wasn’t some ingenious plan Rose concocted to distance herself from a husband she clearly made a mistake marrying. There are so many great real life honeymoon horror stories that I truly feel like this would have been fresh and relatable angle.

During the Q&A Janiak, who is clearly both an intelligent film consumer and talented director to watch despite my feelings about this film, said the inspiration for Honeymoon comes from those very moments – the horror of looking at someone you’ve decided to spend your life with and wondering “who is this person?” Unfortunately Honeymoon asks that question from the entirely wrong perspective. Which is a shame, because if this movie had been barking up the right tree it could have made a truly unique impression.

In the film, “Young newlyweds Paul (Harry Treadaway) and Bea (Rose Leslie) travel to remote lake country for their honeymoon where the promise of private romance awaits them. Shortly after arriving, Paul finds Bea wandering and disoriented in the middle of the night. As she becomes more distant and her behavior increasingly peculiar, Paul begins to suspect something more sinister than sleepwalking took place in the woods.”

Last night during the Q&A you said the film comes from a place a lot of people get to, where they look at the person they’re with and ask, “who is this person?” Is there a specific instance of this that inspired it?

There wasn’t a specific moment before we wrote the script but part of the thing is, and this is going to get weird now, my boyfriend is a twin. We used to all live together, the three of us. And there was a moment when we were all in Vancouver while my boyfriend was shooting his first movie where I woke up and saw my boyfriend standing next to his computer. I didn’t have my glasses on yet and I walked over and touched his back a little bit and he turned around and it was his brother. That moment was so terrible! We were like, “ugh!” To touch someone in this familiar way and have it be completely different… those moments hit home for me.

Even small moments though can drive a wedge between people. “I don’t like this movie.” “What are you talking about? Of course you like this movie.”

You can tell they’re trying really hard to make the honeymoon work. There’s a pressure there to not disappoint the other person.

That’s interesting, I think that’s one of the reasons we went to a honeymoon. It’s this protected space where it’s just you guys away from the world, whether you’re at a resort or a cabin. You’ve made the decision for this little amount of time the blackberries are going away and there’s the pressure of, “we have to make this good.” I’m not sure what it’s like, I’m not married, but it also seems like there’s just a lot of cultural stress.

Where in the “Game Of Thrones” trajectory did Rose Leslie come onboard? That’s quite a get.

I love Rose, she was my first choice. We shot in the spring of last year, after season 2 of “Game Of Thrones.” But her character wasn’t in that season that much. The big John Snow cave scene, that aired while we were shooting. And part of it, I said last night, I had read the “Game Of Thrones” books and Ygritte was my favorite character. I knew her trajectory, I knew where she was going. When Rose started playing her I thought she was amazing and was really nailing that energy. I just thought she was a star. I felt really really lucky to have her.

You mentioned a preference for Cronenberg body horror as well as Polanksi’s Rosemary’s Baby. There’s a scene in the film where both of those elements collide – I don’t want to spoil it for anyone – but what was the process of that like? It’s fairly nightmarish.

There’s an invasive quality there that’s something I probably wasn’t quite as cognizant of as I should have been. There are a couple of scenes that are… invasive, for lack of a better word. We put it later in the shoot a bit so they had time to settle into their characters and it was difficult. She’s very vulnerable in both of those scenes and understood so much of what this transformation was that she was able to feel comfortable doing it. The crew was able to make her feel comfortable as well. The makeup artist was really good about making her feel protected. As an actor you’re always in a vulnerable position, but this was particularly hard.
