After opening to just $5M, the sequel to Machete dropped 66% before tanking further with another 77% drop.

Even the boost of Lady Gaga and Sofia Vergara made no difference, which in coincidence could be related to TheWrap reporting that Gaga’s “Artpop” lost Interscope a whopping $25M. How quickly stars become irrelevant…

Coupled with mostly negative reviews, the shocking failure of Machete Kills has left a huge question mark for the promised end of the trilogy, Machete Kills Again…In Space.

Speaking of, the faux trailer for Machete Kills Again…In Space played in theaters with Machete Kills. The Robert Rodriguez-directed tease has leaked online, and can now be viewed below.

Personally, I’m still excited to see Kills and welcome a third film in space, especially if there’s a lightsaber-machete!

Open Road was hoping that the jam-packed roster of stars – including Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Mel Gibson, Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir, Amber Heard, Sofia Vergara, Zoe Saldana, Edward James Olmos, Charlie Sheen, Elise Avellan, Electra Avellan, William Sadler, Lady Gaga, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens and Marko Zaror – would sell the movie. Unfortunately, it was overshadowed by both Gravity and Captain Phillips, as well as a hefty amount of negative reviews (30% on Rotten Tomatoes).

Last week I had pointed out that I thought it was bizarre how much stock Open Road was putting into “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara, as if she could sell a movie like Nicole Kidman. Even with a push from Lady Gaga and Mel Gibson the movie failed to gain any traction, proving once again that stars don’t always sell movies – on the polar opposite, Warner Bros.’ Gravity is kicking ass because it’s a good, no, great movie, and word of mouth is hot as hell. Yes, George Clooney and Sandra Bullock star, but my personal reaction is that they weren’t used to sell the movie as much as critical acclaim and great footage.

Whatever the case may be, Machete Kills opened to $3.8M, which is the 8th worst opening in history (there’s nothing like being in the company of Firehouse Dog!) for a movie in over 2,500 theaters.

What’s interesting is that Fox’s Machete opened to $11M and went on to $26M, which is great for the low price of an indie production. So what happened? Was it bad marketing (I actually thought the trailers were cool, for what it’s worth)? Bad timing? Or maybe people just hated the first movie (it sucked) and didn’t want to waste their money on the second?

The one question that now has to be asked is can Rodriguez get the third film off the ground, and would anyone even care if he didn’t?

You?

Open Road CEO Tom Ortenberg sealed the deal. Kyle Ward wrote the script based on a story by Marcel Rodriguez and Rodríguez.

“This is the second film in what is meant to be a trilogy. Trejo returns as ex-Federale agent who is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man – he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet.”

The film is expected to have a wide release in 2013.

In other brief casting news, the LA Times reports that Samuel Jackson (above) and Bruce Hornsby have joined the cast of the English-language remake of Chan-wook Park’s cult favorite Oldboy. Jackson will play the man who is being tortured by the hero (Josh Brolin) in a key revenge scene. Fans of the original will remember the scene as perhaps the most visceral and disturbing of the film. Protagonist Dae-su Oh exacts vengeance on a man who once guarded him by extracting his teeth one-by-one with the claw end of a hammer. The new film, which begins shooting this fall in Louisiana and New York, won’t go with the tooth removal, instead inflicting a different kind of torture, says the mag.

The duo star alongside Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley in the Spike Lee-directed thriller. In the 2003 Korean original, a man gets kidnapped and held in a shabby cell for 15 years without explanation. Suddenly, he’s released and given money, a cell phone and clothes and is set on a path to discover who destroyed his life so he can take revenge.

Brendan Fraser will star in writer-director Damian Lee’s action-thriller Split Decision for Rollercoaster Entertainment and Vortex Words + Pictures, says THR. Fraser plays a father who must defend his two children from a pair of murderers. “The plot kicks off when two children (Holly Deveaux and Christian Martin) witness a murder while on a wilderness camping trip with a family friend (Daniel Kash). When two criminal brothers, (Dominic Purcell and Ethan Suplee) start to hunt down the children to silence them, Fraser’s father-figure sets out to rescue them.” Amy Price-Francis appears as the children’s mother. Principal photography begins shortly on location in Ontario.

The site also reports that Kevin Zegers has signed on to join Harald Zwart’s fantasy epic The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones for Constantin Film and Screen Gems. Zegers will play Alec Lightwood, a reluctant Shadowhunter who would rather read about demons than fight them. Lily Collins stars in the film, based on Cassandra Clare’s mega-bestseller. Zegers joins a cast that also includes Jamie Campbell Bower, Lena Headey and Jared Harris. “Set in modern-day New York, the plot centers on Clary Fray (Collins), who discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret tribe of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect the world from demons.” Mortal Instruments is scheduled to begin shooting this month in Toronto.

After directing the acclaimed documentaries Deliver Us From Evil and West of Memphis, Amy Berg is set to make her narrative helming debut with Every Secret Thing, a feature adaptation of Laura Lippman’s 2004 mystery novel that will star Diane Lane, reports Variety. Nicole Holofcener wrote the script that “Follows two 11-year-old girls who are convicted of murdering a baby and incarcerated until they turn 18. Upon their release, children start to go missing; as the police turn their attention to the duo, the mystery surrounding the original murder takes the fore.” Lane is attached to play one of the girls’ mother, who has long known that her daughter is a gifted liar.
