The ’80s gave birth to the beloved idea of “splatstick” horror, which fused together outrageous comedy with absurd levels of blood and gore, with movies like Evil Dead II, Re-Animator, and The Return of the Living Dead helping usher in this new subgenre. When looking back at the crowded field of goopy and grotesque ’80s movies, it’s hard to top the insanity of Street Trash, a movie whose accomplishments have yet to be replicated with the same intensity.

Synapse Films has confirmed that an all-new restoration of Street Trash is set to be released on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on December 7, which is now available for pre-order.

In the sleazy, ominous underworld of lower Manhattan’s winos, derelicts, and drifters, two young runaways — 18-year-old Fred (Mike Lackey) and his brother Kevin (Mark Sferrazza) — live in a tire hut behind a sprawling auto wrecking yard. Their greatest danger comes from a case of Tenafly Viper, mysterious old booze discovered behind a wall in a local liquor store’s basement. It’s 40 years old—and it has gone very, very bad! Anyone who drinks it melts into multi-colored goo in seconds, and it’s only $1.00 a bottle.

One of the most requested titles in Synapse Films history now arrives on home video in an exclusive new uncut 4K restoration from the original 35mm camera negative supervised and approved by the film’s original director of photography, David Sperling, who worked closely with Synapse Films to ensure it looks exactly as he and director James Muro intended. This two-disc side-loading slipcase special edition includes both a 4K (2160p) UHD disc and a Blu-ray (1080p) of the newly remastered film and special features.

Special features on the release are as follows:

  • Side-loading chipboard hardbox case designed by artist Wes Benscoter
  • All-new exclusive Synapse Films 2026 4K remaster of the original 35mm camera negative presented in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible), supervised and approved by director of photography, David Sperling
  • Lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1 surround mix and the original DTS-HD MA 2.0 theatrical mono
  • Two audio commentaries featuring producer Roy Frumkes and director James Muro
  • The Meltdown Memoirs – Two hour documentary on the history and making of Street Trash
  • Street Trash – The original 16mm short film that inspired the movie
  • Jane – Interview with star Jane Arakawa
  • A conversation with writer/producer Roy Frumkes
  • Original Street Trash promotional teaser
  • “In Production” advertisement
  • Anniversary celebration cast and crew Q&As
  • Deleted scenes
  • Original theatrical trailer

This new set is limited edition, so make sure to act fast if you’re hoping to secure a copy for yourself.

Will you be grabbing the new restoration? Let us know in the comments below!

Video stores were (and are) some of the coolest places on the planet, where many of us first fell in love with horror movies.

I’m here to help bolster that notion with these five top shelf horror home video promos that were served up expressly for excitement at your local video rental destination.

THE INFLATABLE GHOULIES TOILET

It’s undeniable that the Ghoulies franchise ruled rental shelves in the 1980s. It also spawned the royal flush of promo pieces with an INFLATABLE TOILET featuring the creatures from the cover art.

I’ve seen a recreation of these, so pay close attention when you spot one, if you can at all!

BONUS: GHOULIES II TOILET PAPER

What’s an inflatable toilet without some matching TP? Vestron Video were genius level when creating video promo, and this twofer drop for Ghoulies 2 is exemplary in that notion.

THE HOUSE VHS CLAMSHELL CASE

This was the ultimate counter topper showstopper.

A custom-shaped embedded clamshell design held a screener copy of the film and all the electronic guts that helped illuminate the window and other parts of the display. These have since become a highly coveted collectors piece, and a jaw-dropper for anyone who hasn’t seen this House.

THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD PART II CERAMIC BUST

A stunning recreation of the arresting and unforgettable box art, this Return of the Living Dead Part II ceramic bust measures about 8×8 inches, as you can see from the by-the-box comparison.

This has been one of the most coveted pieces out there for many years, captivating collectors with its unique and spectacular presentation.

THE STREET TRASH CERAMIC MUG

Don’t drink any Viper from this trash can! Vestron does it again with some clever crossover marketing.

This is a fairly common customizable mug (with a lid) but slapping a Street Trash logo on this in the late ’80s meant you weren’t gonna miss this title once it hit the shelves.

THE PHANTASM II SILVER SPHERE HAT

This is the current holiest of grails, and one of the most creatively tailored promo hats ever to grace the heads of horror fans. There appears to be a bloody and bloodless version, but I’ve only encountered three in my tape-driven travels.

Imagine your video store clerk rocking this hat when you lay down your rentals. How do you not ask about the movie and when it’s available to rent?

This is intricate, pure genius promo and that’s why it sits at the top of this list.

What’s your favorite video store promo?

Shout it out in the comments below. We’ve got more where these came from…

Josh is an eternal champion of the VHS format. He has steadily spread the rewind-inclined word with Lunchmeat Magazine and LunchmeatVHS.com, along with the book and supplement series STUCK ON VHS. He is also one of the founders of Drive-In VHS Fest, which is the largest VHS film festival in the world. His passion for the VHS format has allowed his voice to be featured in The New York Times, L.A. Times, and Washington Post, while a number of his written works are preserved in the Yale Library. When he’s not watching tapes, he enjoys playing basketball and eating nachos, but not at the same time. Though he’s willing to try.

Joe Vaz, who recently starred in the Bloody Disgusting-produced Street Trash reboot, has passed away.

Street Trash director Ryan Kruger, who also worked with Vaz on Fried Barry, shared the news on social media: “I’ve been crying all morning, sending you love. I am so devastated and shocked, you were a great friend we shared so much knowledge of films we loved, it just does not register.

“I am so happy and lucky I got to work with you so many times over the years, its a huge loss to everyone not having you around and the industry won’t be the same, you where great and an amazing talent in so many areas, and your music, I listen to often. We had so many plans to make so many more films and write on projects together.

“Street Trash will hit me so much harder the next time I watch it. I can’t wait for South Africa to see you in all your glory in Street Trash. We had the best time on that set. And as you said to me before filming – what can be better than making movies with your friends? Life’s so short. Sending love to your family. I will be having a Joe special today, a salami pizza. I love you my friend.”

Vaz’s other genre credits include Dredd, Chronicle, Death Race 2, Lost Boys: The Thirst, Starship Troopers 3: Marauder, Critters Attack, Slay, and “Resident Evil.”

The South African actor also appeared in 10,000 BC, The Brothers Grimsby, and episodes of “Black Sails” and “Good Omens.”

Vaz started his career as a musical theatre performer before transitioning into film and television. He also released new-wave music under the moniker ten Athlone.

The Bloody Disgusting-powered SCREAMBOX is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on SCREAMBOX right now.

Evil Dead Trap

Mix up your January Giallo viewing with Evil Dead Trap. Although its title invokes Evil Dead – and there’s a bit of Sam Raimi-esque kineticism in the camerawork – the 1988 Japanese film shares more in common with the lurid Italian thrillers: a mysterious killer, elaborate murder set pieces, gruesome violence, stylish cinematography, a dreamlike atmosphere, and an infectious synth score.

Upon receiving a graphic snuff film, a late-night TV host (Miyuki Ono) rallies a small production crew to investigate its origins at an abandoned military base. The story plays out in a manner that could be considered a slasher, but the big swing taken in the final act gives the film an otherworldly bend in the vein of James Wan’s Malignant.

Starry Eyes

Starry Eyes explores the dark side of Hollywood, but jealous so-called friends, sleazy producers, demeaning day jobs, and soul-bearing auditions are merely the beginning for struggling actress Sarah Walker (a tour de force first leading role from Alex Essoe, “Midnight Mass”).

After confessing that she will do whatever it takes to win the role in a new movie from an esteemed production company, she’s tested in more ways than she could ever imagine. The deliberate pace oozes atmosphere, coming to head in the final act as Sarah undergoes a hideous transformation that affects her both physically and mentally.

Influences drawn from David Cronenberg’s grotesque body horrors, the psychological grasp of early Roman Polanski, shades of David Lynch’s hazy reality, and a John Carpenter-esque score by Jonathan Snipes (Room 237) feel fresh when paired with writing-directing duo Kevin Kolsch & Dennis Widmyer’s (Pet Sematary) modern filmmaking approach.

The Wolf Hour

A 2019 Sundance selection, The Wolf Hour is a blend of character drama and psychological thriller. Naomi Watts (The Ring) carries the film as an agoraphobic author struggling to hold onto what’s left of her declining sanity while being harassed by an unseen tormentor. Jennifer Ehle (Contagion) appears as her estranged sister.

Setting the story against the backdrop of the Summer of Sam murders and the New York City blackout of 1977 add an engaging tapestry. Writer-director Alistair Banks Griffin strikes an understated tone of paranoia and suspense, matched by the cinematography by Khalid Mohtaseb (The Pope’s Exorcist) and the score by Danny Bensi & Saunder Jurriaans (“Ozark,” The Autopsy of Jane Doe).

The Black Mass

An atypical true crime thriller, The Black Mass follows 24 hours in the life of serial killer Ted Bundy as he stalks and ultimately murders a group of sorority girls. Rather than glorifying him as the handsome charmer he’s often characterized as, Bundy is portrayed as the sick creep we know him to be.

The supporting cast is populated by a number of familiar faces, including Jeremy London (Mallrats), Lisa Wilcox (A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master), Susan Lanier (The Hills Have Eyes), Lew Temple (The Devil’s Rejects), Eileen Dietz (The Exorcist), and Kathleen Kinmont (Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers).

Indie horror actress Devanny Pinn’s feature directorial debut lends a voyeuristic perspective to the crimes. The first two thirds feel almost like a hangout movie, which will test the patience of some viewers, but the culminating killing spree is horrific without being gratuitous.

Street Trash

With Ryan Kruger’s Street Trash reboot now on SCREAMBOX, it’s the perfect time to revisit Jim Muro’s 1987 original splatterfest. As the tagline says, “If you’ve never seen a melt movie before… be prepared!” But vibrant, liquefying bodies are just one facet of the madness that is Street Trash.

There’s plenty of fun to be had with the goopy practical effects, but much of the depravity is unexpectedly bleak for what is ostensibly a horror-comedy about contaminated alcohol that reduces vagabonds to piles of neon slime. The social commentary smothered in New York City sleaze is akin to, yet distinct from, contemporaneous output from Troma and Frank Henenlotter.

A wild and crazy spiritual sequel to the 1980s cult horror classic directed this time by Ryan Kruger (Fried Barry), Street Trash is now streaming exclusively on SCREAMBOX!

This SCREAMBOX Original splatterfest is a 35mm reboot of the ’80s cult classic following a group of homeless misfits in their fight for survival against an extermination plot.

Additionally, the original Street Trash (1987) can also be streamed on SCREAMBOX.

In the new movie, “In the year 2050, global economic turmoil has destroyed the middle class in Cape Town, South Africa, which is now divided between the ultra-rich and the displaced. Ronald and a group of fellow houseless friends uncover a plot by the local government to ‘wash away’ the houseless population with a sinister chemical agent called ‘V.’ Now, they must risk everything to expose the truth and resist a society that’s determined to erase them.”

Kruger also stars alongside Sean Cameron Michael, Donna Cormack-Thomson, Joe Vaz, Lloyd Martinez Newkirk, Shuraigh Meyer, Gary Green, and Warrick Grier.

Kruger co-wrote the film for Bloody Disgusting & Cineverse with James C. Williamson (Fried Barry), based on the original Street Trash movie by Roy Frumkes & Jim Muro.

Shot entirely on 35mm, the film is produced by Justin Martell and Matt Manjourides of US-based studio Not the Funeral Home (“The Last Drive-In With Joe Bob Briggs”), with original Street Trash producer Roy Frumkes and director Jim Muro, along with Bad Dragon and genre film restoration outfit Vinegar Syndrome (New York Ninja), all serving as Executive Producers. Chris McGurk, Brandon Hill, Brad Miska, and Yolanda Macias Executive Produce for Cineverse.

The 1987 cult classic Street Trash was a darkly comedic and gritty horror film that has earned a dedicated following over the years due to its distinct style and unapologetically bizarre approach to storytelling. Directed by J. Michael Muro, the movie was set in the decaying and squalid streets of Brooklyn, New York as it delves into the lives of various eccentric characters, each struggling to survive in their harsh and unforgiving environment.

Luz director Tilman Singer‘s shot-on-35mm film tells the story of 17-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) who leaves her American home to live with her father and moves into a resort in the German Alps with his new family. Arriving at their future residence, they are greeted by Mr. König (Stevens), her father’s boss, who takes an inexplicable interest in Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma.

In the film, “After befriending a British couple with a mute son, Americans Ben and Louise accept an unusual invitation to bring their daughter for a weekend at an idyllic country estate. Yet when they discover their hosts are hiding sinister motives, Ben and Louise fear their family may be pawns in a disturbing plot.”

Street Trash – SCREAMBOX (12/27)

Street Trash

Fried Barry director Ryan Kruger reimagines the 1987 cult melt film as a standalone spirital sequel. Set in the year 2050, global economic turmoil has destroyed the middle class in Cape Town, South Africa. The local government concocts an evil plot to remove the homeless population using a sinister chemical agent called ‘V.’ They didn’t anticipate that a rag tag group of homeless friends would fight back. The growing divide between the rich and the poor has never been this goopy.

If you’ve never seen a man melt before, prepare yourself for the original Street Trash, now streaming on SCREAMBOX.

The 1987 cult classic splatterfest presages the streaming release of the SCREAMBOX Original reboot, which will be arriving on the platforms this coming December. It’s available today on Digital HD.

In James Muro’s cult classic…

“In the sleazy, foreboding world of winos, derelicts and drifters in lower Manhattan, two young runaways—eighteen-year-old Fred (Mike Lackey) and his younger brother, Kevin (Mark Sferrazza)—live in a tire hut in the back of an auto wrecking yard. Life is hard, but the most lethal threat to the boys is the mysterious case of Tenafly Viper wine in Ed’s liquor store window. The stuff is forty years old… and it’s gone bad. REAL bad! Anyone who drinks it melts in seconds—and it’s only a dollar a bottle!”

Read Meagan’s take on the 1987 gonzo splatterfest right here.

“If you’re a fan of sleaze and a whole lot of gooey, crass shenanigans, this formative Melt Movie is a must,” she writes. “It’s goofy, exploitative, over the top, and gory. Underneath it all lurks some wry social commentary, but there’s enough humor happening on screen to distract if that’s not your thing. Street Trash doesn’t hold a candle to the goriest that horror has to offer, but it does present a different type of extreme in envelope-pushing humor. It’s pure cult cinema.”

From Bloody Disgusting and Cineverse, Street Trash is now available today on all Digital HD platforms ahead of our SCREAMBOX release later this year.

If you can’t wait, the original Street Trash (1987) has also just melted its way onto SCREAMBOX today!

Kruger co-wrote the film with James C.

The melt movie, a subcategory of body horror, is a specific flavor of genre film wherein the flesh melts, oozes, and dissolves into goo. These films are best viewed on an empty stomach.

On that note, this week brings the release of Ryan Kruger‘s Street Trash, a spiritual sequel to the 1987 melt movie cult classic that boasts no shortage of gruesome, practical effects-driven meltdowns. Flesh dissolves in vibrant but gooey fashion, inspiring this week’s streaming picks.

Brace your stomach for these five horror titles, all finding inventive new ways to explore this niche corner of body horror. As always, here’s where you can stream them this week.

For more Stay Home, Watch Horror picks, click here.

The Blob – Tubi

Chuck Russell’s remake of the 1958 sci-fi horror film dials up the practical effects to eleven and delivers on the memorable, goopy horror moments. In keeping with tradition, the remake also recreates the iconic theater scene but makes it far more lethal and gorier. When the creature crashes on Earth, The Blob instills the notion that no one is safe by gruesomely devouring the Steve McQueen-like hero character in a surprising fake-out. Enter Meg Penny, one pissed-off cheerleader ready to save the day. It’s the Blob’s gruesome means of digesting its prey, painfully dissolving flesh while they’re still alive, that makes this one of the best melt movies available.

Body Melt – AMC+, Fandango at Home, Shudder, Tubi

Body Melt

Body Melt is an Australian horror-comedy that sees a community being used unknowingly as guinea pigs for a new dietary supplement. Too bad it causes rapid decomposition and excruciating death. It’s as over the top as it is goopy and as zany as it is ultra-gory. If you love Peter Jackson’s early splatter works, then you’ll love this one. It’s a comical and stomach-churning lampooning of the health fad craze that rose to prominence in the ’80s. Released just a year after Peter Jackson’s Braindead (Dead Alive), the splatstick influence is apparent.

The Devil’s Rain – AMC+, Pluto TV, the Roku Channel, Shout TV, Shudder, Tubi

Devils Rain melt movie

Satanic priest Jonathan Corbis (Ernest Borgnine) was betrayed and burned alive. He cursed the family responsible, who stole a powerful Satanic tome from him, vowing to hunt down every single descendant and reclaim the book. While The Devil’s Rain may be light on plot, it boasts a loaded cast that includes William Shatner, Ida Lupino, Tom Skerritt, and John Travolta (in his first feature role). Satanist Anton LaVey served as the film’s technical advisor in addition to his small role as the High Priest of the Church of Satan. Most importantly, though, The Devil’s Rain is a melt movie that doesn’t skimp on the gnarly melts.

The Incredible Melting Man – Tubi

The Incredible Melting Man

An astronaut resorts to murder and consuming flesh after extreme radiation exposure on a voyage to Saturn causes his flesh to melt. Writer/Director William Sachs draws heavily from Night of the Living Dead in tone and pacing, emphasizing pathos and morality over pulpy scares, which means this melt movie isn’t narratively as exciting as its setup suggests. It’s not the subdued and somewhat forgettable plot that makes this pick worth watching, though, but legendary SFX artist Rick Baker’s gruesome practical effects that put the “incredible” in the film’s title. The stages of melty decomposition offset the lackluster story.

Street Trash - Splatter Comedies

Set in a Brooklyn junkyard with a cast of characters comprised mostly of homeless people, the film follows their wacky adventures made even wackier when a local liquor store owner starts selling them Tenafly Viper, 60-year-old hooch that’s gone bad and melts any drinker from the inside out. Testing the boundaries of humor and taste, Street Trash takes the gory practical effects of the decade further by making the blood dayglo colors, a vibrant signal not to take this splatter movie seriously. Watch the original Street Trash then check out Ryan Kruger’s spiritual sequel on Digital outlets beginning November 19. The original film also melts onto SCREAMBOX on November 19!

Bloody Disgusting and Cineverse will release the horror film Street Trash, a brand new spiritual sequel to the 1980s cult horror classic, on Digital outlets beginning November 19.

As part of the marketing campaign for Street Trash, we’ve taken to the streets of Los Angeles to recreate the iconic melting bodies scenes in multiple iconic horror movie filming locations!

A horrifying discovery has been made across multiple locations in LA—grisly remains of melted bodies! In each scene, a melted arm clutches a bottle of booze, surrounded by a grotesque, colorful ooze. It appears the streets are infected with the aftermath of Tenafly Viper—a cheap, lethal booze that liquefies anyone who dares drink it into a ghastly, melting mess…

Each location is connected to houses featured in iconic horror movies. The locales include:

  • A Nightmare on Elm Street – Springfield High School
  • Insidious – House
  • They Live – Fight Alley
  • Night of the Creeps – Sorority House

Check out the images below and look for Street Trash (2024) on Digital November 19!

The original Street Trash (1987) will also melt its way onto SCREAMBOX on November 19.

A reimagining of the 1987 classic, Street Trash is directed by Ryan Kruger (“Warrior,” Fried Barry), who also co-wrote the film with James C. Williamson (Fried Barry), based on the original Street Trash movie by Roy Frumkes & Jim Muro.

Kruger also stars in the film alongside Sean Cameron Michael, Donna Cormack-Thomson, Joe Vaz, Lloyd Martinez Newkirk, Shuraigh Meyer, Gary Green, and Warrick Grier.

“In the year 2050, global economic turmoil has destroyed the middle class in Cape Town, South Africa, which is now divided between the ultra-rich and the displaced. Ronald and a group of fellow houseless friends uncover a plot by the local government to ‘wash away’ the houseless population with a sinister chemical agent called ‘V.’ Now, they must risk everything to expose the truth and resist a society that’s determined to erase them.”

“Our reimagining of Street Trash takes place in Cape Town, South Africa where the growing divide between rich and poor has changed the world as we know it,” Kruger previews. “I was a huge fan of the original Street Trash when I was a kid, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to introduce a whole new generation to the melted gonzo goodness that made the original such a classic.”

“I’m excited to reinterpret the original story, update it to better reflect the times we live in and give it a new and original spin,” continues Kruger. “While our reimagining features new, exciting plot elements that give the film many bizarre twists and turns, the core of the film lies with our diverse and unique cast of characters. As a director, I am very character-centric and I can’t wait to see our strange and hilarious ensemble on screen together as they navigate the hostile streets of Cape Town. Our version of Street Trash will be raw, hilarious, packed with vibrant characters and multi-colored explosions of gooey greatness.”

Fried Barry director Ryan Kruger gives a new spin on the 1987 cult classic Street Trash, relocating the melt madness to Cape Town, South Africa, where the growing divide between rich and poor has changed the world as we know it. But Kruger will be the first to eschew the “remake” label, referring to his new film as a standalone sequel.

The filmmaker wrote Street Trash to be accessible for newcomers, while slyly referencing details and events from the original to make this new movie a continuation of the goopy, melty world introduced by director Jim Muro in 1987. Kruger took painstaking measures to even recapture the ’80s aesthetic, both through practical effects and shooting his reimagining on 35mm. It also helps that Kruger grew up as a massive fan of Street Trash.

“As a kid growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, Street Trash was one of those films that my friends and I would sit up watching on my little TV late at night,” Kruger tells Bloody Disgusting. “We’d either have it on VHS, or it would be on TV. I was a fan of the original, and over the years, as it got older, I went back and watched it. So, when Justin Martell and Matt Manjourides approached me to do the film after I made Fried Barry, I was like, ‘Hell yeah, that would be amazing.'”

Street Trash

But how do you approach Street Trash in the modern world? The director explains, “It was one of those things straightway where there’s a big fanbase for the original film; I’m a part of that fanbase. But at the same time, I really respect the original film, but I wanted to stay very far away from trying to copy the original in any way. What I loved from the original, obviously, is the prosthetics. It was the ’80s, and it was just the tone and feel of ’80s movies. We were very lucky that we actually got to shoot on 35mm, just to give it that eighties film look. And all the prosthetics, but all in all with the whole film.”

Kruger reiterates that he doesn’t consider his film a remake. “It’s in the same world as the 1987 original film. We actually mention stuff from the original film. So for me, it’s always been more of a sequel. For the original fans, it’s actually a sequel. For a new audience it can be a standalone film.“

Ryan Kruger's Street Trash gets gory

The commitment to the ’80s meant that Kruger wanted the film’s effects to feel authentic to the period, too. “I wanted to keep it very, very ’80s, very old prosthetics when it came to anything with the blood and the goo and everything. I looked at the original. It’s such a big part of the original. It was just really coming up with those ideas. I guess it just falls under the story as well of how each of these melts happened. It was that bottle of booze that went around and these guys that were drinking it. With this, it was the government. It wasn’t in drink form in some of the film, but gas. So, it was coming up with those different ideas of the melts. And sitting there with the prosthetics people, really coming up with ideas.”

Kruger continues, “Can we do this? Can we do that? You know, is this possible? It was fun. I always say if I didn’t do directing or acting, I probably would have gone into animatronics and prosthetics. So yeah, it was a lot of fun just coming up with these different ideas and then trying to push the boundaries compared to the original. Push for more blood and the goo. It’s almost like a little bit darker, in a way, when people melt. We actually did some pickup shots, and that’s just because we wanted to push it a little bit more with prosthetics.“

In the niche subgenre of melt horror, the 1987 film stands out in part for the colorful nature of the melting. The unlucky denizens that drink tainted Tenafly Viper dissolve into vibrant colors of goo. “That’s such a big thing for the original,” Kruger agrees. “There’s a whole generation that doesn’t even know what the fuck Street Trash is. The color was a big thing. If you happen just to be watching the film and see this purple or yellow or orange goo, you’d be like, ‘What the fuck?’ This is meant to be blood, you know. We wanted to use different colors just to push it. Obviously, prosthetics are a big part of the ’80s, but it’s also the color… it’s that multicolored goo. That’s that’s what Street Trash is, you know.“

While the homeless population in the original film often splintered into factions and fought amongst themselves, the new film centers around a ragtag group of eccentric but ultimately sweet misfits. They form a tight-knit group that pushes back against a corrupt government attempting to snuff them out of existence, and its members include Shuraigh Meyer as “Pap,“ Lloyd Martinez Newkirk as “Wors, “Joe Vazas as “Chef,“ Sean Cameron Michael as “Ronald,“ Donna Cormack-Thomson as “Alex,” and Gary Green as “2-Bit.”

Ryan Kruger says of his motley bunch, “It’s very important for me, no matter what movie you make, that you have characters that you love and sympathize with. There are a lot of genre movies that get made, especially in the low-budget horror world, where there are a lot of characters that are just shit, and you don’t care for them. When writing this film, I didn’t want to just make it a gore film. It’s very easy just to make a gore film. You have to have a good story. You must have good characters, and you’ve got to be able to care for them.“

The filmmaker also voices a unique character in the film: an imaginary puppet named Sockle. Kruger explains, “It was really fun. I’ve never really done voice work before. I’m working with the character 2-Bit, played by Gary Green, who played Fried Barry. 2-Bit probably took way too much acid in his life, too many drugs, and he has this imaginary friend. Only he can see this character. It was like a support character for 2-Bit and Gary Green, too, so I could bounce off him and work very closely. Gary looks amazing, just the way he looks. He’s got such presence. But to have this character as a drug addict and have this imaginary, inappropriate, funny friend… It was just fun to bounce back and forth. Then I was also smoking. So when I was doing this voice the whole time; my voice would really hurt at the end of the day.”

Street Trash heroes

The commitment to ’80s cinema extends beyond Street Trash for Ryan Kruger. The filmmaker tips us off to Easter eggs hiding in plain sight: the costume designs. “In all my films, I put in a lot of little Easter eggs. Little nods to different movies that I enjoyed growing up,” he teases. “Some people will pick this up, and some people might not pick it up, but a lot of the characters in the movie are based on them. For example, Alex’s character. If you look at her wardrobe, it’s Ripley from Aliens. 2-Bit has red overalls and yellow gloves based on Roger Rabbit and Ronald, our lead guy. He was based on Robin Williams’ The Fisher King. And then you’ve got Chef, who is Stanley Kubrick if you look at his jacket, hair, and his glasses. Then, the two guys who are part of Rat King’s men are Snake Plissken and The Duke from Escape from New York. If you look at the wardrobes, it’s all ’80s and ’90s movies with the characters.”

Street Trash releases on Digital on November 19, just in time to get melty this Thanksgiving.

Get ready for a full load of face-melting gory goodness when Cineverse/Bloody Disgusting/SCREAMBOX reboot the 1987 cult classic Street Trash alongside Vinegar Syndrome, set to have its Los Angeles Premiere at the New Beverly Cinema on October 17th at 7:30 PM. Tickets are available here.

From director Ryan Kruger, whose first independent feature Fried Barry played dozens of film festivals worldwide, Street Trash follows a group of homeless misfits as they fight for survival when they discover a plot to exterminate every homeless person in the city.

“Our reimagining of Street Trash takes place in Cape Town, South Africa where the growing divide between rich and poor has changed the world as we know it,” says Kruger. “I was a huge fan of the original Street Trash when I was a kid, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to introduce a whole new generation to the melted gonzo goodness that made the original such a classic.”

“The original Street Trash was known for its dark humor, over-the-top gore, and surreal visuals, and we know the film is in the right hands with Ryan Kruger to push this remake even further,” said Brad Miska, Managing Director of Bloody Disgusting/Cineverse. “It’s frightening how relevant the social commentary continues to be after all of these years.”

Whereas splatter movies wield gore and carnage like a weapon to evoke a visceral response, splatter comedies push the onscreen violence and gore into outlandish territory for the sake of a hearty laugh. Peter Jackson and Sam Raimi, for example, began their filmmaking careers defining the modern splatter comedy with their early works, pushing the boundaries of taste, horror, and humor through cartoonish bloodletting.

This week brings the arrival of a new splatter-comedy, Destroy All Neighbors, presenting the perfect excuse to laugh your way through the excess entrails and arterial spray the niche subgenre has to offer. These five splatter comedies vary in style and tone, but all seek to tickle your funny bone through humor, fun, and a whole lot of guts.

Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Before becoming a standalone film, Blood Diner was initially intended to act as a sequel to Herschell Gordon Lewis’s Blood Feast. That change resulted in a zany ’80s horror-comedy that remakes the splatter classic; the premise is essentially the same at its core. Directed by Jackie Kong, Blood Diner follows two brothers tasked by their dead serial killer uncle to continue his attempts to resurrect the goddess Sheetar. They do this by using their diner to host ritualistic feasts and lure women from which they harvest body parts, but the brothers’ vapid nature winds up making this feel like Bill & Ted were unwittingly dropped into a horror-comedy. Their murder spree is made all the funnier when detectives are stumped by the crime scenes. The original played it straight, while Kong dials up the ’80s excess here for maximum gonzo laughs.

Feast – Plex, The Roku Channel, Tubi

Feast

Feast presents an “anything goes,” crass and raunchy attitude that doesn’t take itself too seriously right out of the gate. Except when it comes to the gore. Directed by John Gulager and written by Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan, Feast assembles an eclectic bunch at a roadside bar then traps them there as deadly monsters descend. Characters get introduced via humorous archetype cards before quickly being dispatched in goopy, bloody ways. Gulager delivers a gruesomely over-the-top creature feature with its tongue firmly in cheek but with a breakneck speed and emphasis on practical effects and action.

Re-Animator – AMC+, Arrow, Fandor, Kanopy, Midnight Pulp, Plex, SCREAMBOX, Shudder, Tubi

Re-Animator

This loose retelling of H.P. Lovecraft’s Herbert West-Reanimator goes for the jugular in terms of gore and laughs thanks to director Stuart Gordon, producer Brian Yuzna, and actor Jeffrey Combs as Herbert West. West’s creation of a reanimating agent brings dead tissue back to life, which proves disastrous for roommate Dan (Bruce Abbott), his girlfriend Megan (Barbara Crampton), and the higher-ranking administration of Miskatonic University. It’s Combs and his quirky character that provides most of the laughs in this blood-drenched feature, but so too does the film’s villain- the horny severed head of Dr. Carl Hill. If you’ve seen this a dozen times already, consider revisiting as a double feature with Suitable Flesh when it arrives on Shudder later this month.

Street Trash – AMC+, Night Flight, Tubi

Street Trash

Set in a Brooklyn junkyard with a cast of characters comprised mostly of homeless people, the film follows their wacky adventures made even wackier when a local liquor store owner starts selling them Tenafly Viper, 60-year-old hooch that’s gone bad and melts any drinkers from the inside out. Street Trash takes the gory practical effects of the decade further by making the blood dayglo colors, a vibrant signal not to take this splatter movie seriously, even when testing the boundaries of humor and taste. If you need an extra incentive to hit play on this one, a reboot is on the way!

Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead – Fandor, Midnight Pulp, SCREAMBOX

Zombie Ass Toilet of the Dead

The title says it all. Expect more splatstick mayhem from Noboru Iguchi (Dead Sushi, Machine Girl, RoboGeisha) here. A group trip goes awry when teen Maki devours a fish with a parasitic worm; it sparks an undead invasion like no other. Poop-covered undead, potent farts, and more are promised in this over-the-top gross-out horror comedy. Splatter comedies often test your gag reflex through unrelenting gore gags, played up to comedic perfection. Noboru Iguchi escalates the carnage with the repulsive inclusion of, well, Zombie Ass.

Get ready for a full load of face-melting gory goodness when Cineverse/Bloody Disgusting/SCREAMBOX reboot the 1987 cult classic Street Trash alongside Vinegar Syndrome!

Production is currently underway in various locations around Cape Town, South Africa for the film that is shot entirely on 35mm. The news was first reported by Variety.

Cineverse plans to release the film as a SCREAMBOX Original in early 2024.

Protagonist Studios and Stage Five Films are handling production services in South Africa.

“I’m excited to reinterpret the original story, update it to better reflect the times we live in and give it a new and original spin,” continued Kruger.

The deal was negotiated by Brandon Hill, Director of Acquisitions, on behalf of Cineverse and Matt Manjourides on behalf of Not the Funeral Home and the film.

Watch a particularly memorable clip from the original Street Trash below.

Butcher Block is a weekly series celebrating horror’s most extreme films and the minds behind them. Dedicated to graphic gore and splatter, each week will explore the dark, the disturbed, and the depraved in horror, and the blood and guts involved. For the films that use special effects of gore as an art form, and the fans that revel in the carnage, this series is for you.

Chances are you’ll know if low budget exploitation horror film Street Trash is for you before you’ve even see it. Definitely within the first five minutes, which features both male and female full-frontal nudity.

Released in 1987, Street Trash takes the gory practical effects of the decade further by making the blood dayglo colors. Swapping out normal body fluid colors for something more befitting of an electric rainbow makes Street Trash seem a bit less extreme than normal melt horror films, but it’s a pioneer with great practical effects that aren’t afraid to balance the gore with sleazy, crass humor intended to offend.

Directed by James M. Muro, a cinematographer and Steadicam operator known for his work on films like The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and True Lies, Street Trash was initially intended to be his thesis for film school. Surprising no one, including himself, it wasn’t accepted. Besides melting homeless people, there’s a tyrannical Vietnam veteran (named Bronson) ruling violently over the junkyard, race-based arguments and jokes mid-grocery story theft, attempted rape, an overzealous cop, drunk sex, and more. There’s even a game of keep-away involving a severed penis. Because of course.

Fun tidbit: that scene featured three different fake members; the largest -the size of a football- was used for shots that saw the penis getting tossed in the air. The more you know.

Between the New York setting and the humor, Street Trash feels akin to a Troma movie. It’s not, but it does have something else in common with the film production in special makeup effects artist Jennifer Aspinall. Aspinall fell in love with makeup at a young age and moved to New York at the age of 18 to pursue it. But she really got her start in makeup effects on The Toxic Avenger, a low budget romp that taught her the basics thanks to creature work, huge blood gags, prosthetics and body parts. Her next job was special makeup effects on Spookies, a film where Muro happened to be working as a camera operator. They hit it off, and he hired her for Street Trash.

Aspinall designed and even directed a lot of the effects for Street Trash. Even though the colors involved with the melt sequences were abstract, she strove for authenticity in terms of texture and viscosity. The special makeup effects team had a few months to prepare, which went a long way in why Street Trash’s effects look so great despite a lower budget. The most complicated of all wasn’t the melting sequences, though, but Bronson’s death. Aspinall had to build an animatronic severed head that would smile as it looked up a girl’s skirt before dying. Cables, remote controls, motors, and a sculpted head that she’d never actually done before – and it all looks great.

If you’re a fan of sleaze and a whole lot of gooey, crass shenanigans, this formative Melt Movie is a must. It’s goofy, exploitative, over the top, and gory. Underneath it all lurks some wry social commentary, but there’s enough humor happening on screen to distract if that’s not your thing. Street Trash doesn’t hold a candle to the goriest that horror has to offer, but it does present a different type of extreme in envelope-pushing humor. It’s pure cult cinema.

Prolific Steadicam operator James Muro has only directed one feature film (so far) in his career, but hot damn is it a doozy. I speak of Street Trash, the slimy shocker that has been barraging viewers’ eyeballs since 1987. It’s recently arrived on Blu-ray in a “Special Meltdown Edition” courtesy of Synapse Films and technicolor melting lowlifes have never looked better!

The smart-mouthed owner of a liquor store is rummaging around his basement one day when he comes across a dusty case of bottles labeled “Tenefly Viper.” He puts them on sale for $1 each to give the local riff-raff something cheap to drink – presumably so they’ll get the hell out of his store faster. A regular wino named Fred (Mike Lackey) is the first to buy, but a fellow bum he pissed off earlier intercepts his bottle. Good thing too, because once the guy takes a small sip of the Viper, he bubbles and melts in the most glorious toilet scene in cinema history.

The rest of the film pits Fred and his brother up against the local vagrant population, led by demented Vietnam veteran Bronson, the king of the hobos. He’s got a makeshift throne in the auto wreckage yard and everything. As more bums continue to melt under the toxic hooch, Bronson becomes more enraged, the Mafia starts asking questions, and the cops have no clue what’s going on.

Based around the simple premise of melting bums with tainted liquor, Street Trash weaves together a bloody rainbow of depravity, comedy, and some genuinely great filmmaking that’s artfully photographed. The film achieves an almost epic scope with the filthiest cast of characters ever.

There’s so much to love in this film. I really dig the beginning of the film, which is a lot like the beginning of Disney’s Aladdin. Actually, Aladdin came out five years after Street Trash, so Disney has some explaining to do. Fred goes into the liquor store and steals a bottle of Viper. Then as the opening credits do their thing, he runs through the most derelict sections of lower Manhattan, which back then looked like a warzone. He steals money out of another bum’s hands, causes a car accident, and dodges pissed off civilians. It’s such a kick ass opening and sets the stage for the heaps of beautiful lewdness to come. By heaps I mean castration, penis toss, necrophilia, and blatant chicken theft.

Released during the glory days of ’80s VHS, Street Trash is available now on Blu-ray and it’s a major upgrade from the 2005 Synapse DVD release. 15 years later and this film will still shock the hell out of an audience.

A/V

Street Trash is presented in 1.78:1 widescreen in 1080p HD. My god, the colors pop on this disc like never before. It’s truly fucking gorgeous. The clarity and contrast are sharp as hell and the colors during the melting scenes will kick you in the eyes. The audio is presented in both mono and a brand new 5.1 mix. The new 5.1 mix sounded okay, but a little clunky in parts.

Special Features

Audio Commentary with Writer/Producer Roy Frumkes: this track provides heaps of information and amazing on-set stories. Like the one about the pig’s head floating ashore or a cameraman almost getting crushed when filming inside a garbage truck. This is a really engaging track and definitely worth a listen.

Audio Commentary with Director James Muro: this track is more focused on the technical aspects of the shoot than Frumkes’ track, but there are some great stories too. You might as well check this track out of you’re making a day of Street Trash already.

The Meltdown Memoirs: this full-length making of documentary could be packaged and sold on its own – it’s that good. It’s as comprehensive as can be with pretty much every cast and crewmember still alive taking part. There are loads of behind the scenes footage, storyboards, and photos as well as a smorgasbord of bizarre and hilarious anecdotes. And alternate takes of melting boobs.

Jane Arakawa Interview: Jane isn’t in The Meltdown Memoirs, so it’s great they tracked her down for this interview. She discusses the shoot and her life with Rolling Stones legendary backup singer Bernard Fowler.

The Original Street Trash 16mm Short: this is a fun watch after viewing the full-length. Features Mike Lackey and more bubbling bums!

Deleted Scenes/Outtakes: nothing too fantastic here, but fuck it, you’ve watched four hours of bonus footage already…

Promotional Teaser: features original footage not seen in the feature that they used to raise cash.

Score: 5/5
