They’ve written and recorded 7 top 10 radio hits, 2 of which were chart-topping No. 1’s (2002’s “Aerials” and 2005’s “Hypnotize”). In 2005 System of a Down released both Mezmerize and Hypnotize in two installments as a dual album in a single year. System of a Down Have Confirmed They Are Recording a Sixth Album

JonathanBarkan — Wed, 09 Nov 2016 20:04:08 +0000

Armenian-American alt-metal band System of a Down have confirmed that they are working on a sixth studio album. This new release will see the band return after more than a decade as their last albums were Mezmerize and Hypnotize, both released in 2005.

This information is confirmed by the band’s drummer John Dolmayan, who spoke recently with Kerrang. “Our playing ability is better than it ever has been and we’re trying new things,” Dolmayan says, “We’re not trying to make Toxicity Part II, just because it was by far our biggest album. This needs to be something for a new generation of SOAD fans, so everyone can see we’re not resting on our laurels,” he tells the site, via Loudwire. Furthermore, he says that the band has written 15 songs over six months, although it should not be assumed that all 15 will be on the record.

He makes it clear that the band is focused on working as a team, saying, “I want everyone on board and feeling good about it, that’s what we’re trying to accomplish right now.”

The band will also be playing several Europe dates next summer. The dates are listed below.

Tom Morello And Serj Tankian Release “Crazy Train” Cover

JonathanBarkan — Thu, 22 Jan 2015 20:00:56 +0000

Remember when I told you about about Immortal Randy Rhoads: The Ultimate Tribute, a tribute album that features some of rock and metal’s biggest names? Well, now you can hear the first track from that album in the form of “Crazy Train”, which was covered by System Of A Down‘s Serj Tankian on vocals, Rage Against The Machine‘s Tom Morello on guitars, onetime Black Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice, and Quiet Riot bassist Rudy Sarzo.

Morello told Rolling Stone:

Randy Rhoads is my favorite guitar player of all time. It was his poster on my wall when I was practicing eight hours a day, and I named my firstborn son, Rhoads, after him. Serj, Rudy, Vinny and I rocked ‘Crazy Train’ as a sonic tribute to one of rock’s greatest fallen heroes. Crank it.

If you haven’t heard of Anthony Vincent, be prepared to see him everywhere. He’s the guy behind Ten Second Songs, a channel that takes a popular song and then covers it in various styles, each only for ten (approximately) seconds. He hit viral status with his video of Katy Perry‘s “Dark Horse”, which in three months has accrued over 8 million views (see it here).

Due to popular demand, Vincent took two of the most requested styles, System Of A Down and Type O Negative, in the song and put together full videos. You can watch them below.

Linkin Park Releases New Track With System Of A Down’s Daron Malakian

JonathanBarkan — Wed, 04 Jun 2014 12:10:25 +0000

Alt-rock band Linkin Park has released a stream of a new track entitled “Rebellion”, which features System Of A Down‘s Daron Malakian. The track comes from the band’s upcoming album The Hunting Party, which comes out June 17th. You can hear the track below.

What I’ve noticed about each of the tracks that the band has released so far is that they all sound super compressed. The cymbals don’t sound like their being hit, they sound like their distorting. It’s upsetting because even though I’m not the biggest Linkin Park fan I still recognize that they have a lot of dynamics going on in their songs. However, instead of highlighting those, they opted to even everything out and it all sounds like one mess. What a shame.

System Of A Down Promises A New Album

JonathanBarkan — Thu, 01 Aug 2013 01:31:32 +0000

Start rejoicing, System Of A Down fans! The alt-metal group played their only US show last night at the Hollywood Bowl and, at the end, drummer Joh Dolmayan grabbed the microphone and stated, “Next time we come back we’ll have a new f*cking album!” Footage of Dolmayan stating this can be seen below (he says it at the 2:29 mark).

The band has not given a timetable for a new release with singer Serj Tankian stating via a Reddit AMA, “It just has to be the right time for us all in the band.”

The band’s last release was 2005’s Hypnotize.

Serj Tankian Releasing TWO Albums This Summer

JonathanBarkan — Fri, 26 Apr 2013 17:30:58 +0000

Multi-talented musician Serj Tankian has announced that he will be releasing not one but TWO albums this summer. The first release, Orca, will be Tankian’s first true symphony and has a release date of June 25th. This album was recorded with conductor Werner Steinmetz and features four acts that take influences from composers such as Ennio Morricone (John Carpenter’s The Thing) and Philip Glass (Candyman). Tankian states, “Orca is known as the killer whale, but is really a dark dolphin, a symbolism for human dichotomy.”

The second album is the jazz-infused Jazz-iz Christ, which comes out July 23rd. The album features contributions from some stellar musicians, including pianist Tigran Hamasyan, flautist Valeri Tolstov, trumpet player Tom Duprety, Stewart Copeland, and more. The album will feature 15 tracks, 11 of which are instrumental.

Both albums are the followup to 2012’s Harakiri. Below are the album covers for Orca and Jazz-iz Christ.

[Album Review] Device ‘Device’

JonathanBarkan — Tue, 09 Apr 2013 16:00:24 +0000

Today marks the release of Device’s debut full-length, the self-titled Device. The brainchild of Disturbed frontman David Draiman, Device features Filter guitarist Geno Lenardo and a slew of guest artists, including Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Serj Tankian (System Of A Down), and more. It is a project that has drawn the interest of countless Disturbed enthusiasts, especially since the announcement of the group’s hiatus in 2011.

With all of these guest artists and one of today’s most recognizable vocalists, is there any way that this debut could fail? Head on below to read my thoughts on the album!

Within the first 10 seconds of the opening track, “You Think You Know”, I felt a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. While the guitar had a thick, interesting sound, the riff itself was disappointing and sounded like something from a Disturbed B-side. As the song continued, I was hit with an awkwardly placed pre-chorus and a chorus that sounded like it could’ve been picked from any hard rock radio station fare.

As the album continued, this sinking feeling became an anchor, continuously plummeting further and further down. The band’s first single “Vilify”, which did absolutely nothing for me upon release, still rang hollow while “Penance” took absolutely no chances creating its own sound and ended up as yet another Disturbed castaway.

“Opinion” was the straw that broke the camel’s back for me. The song felt slapped together and the chorus was so unpleasant that I could barely finish the track. By the end of the album I had found myself so disinterested that I found myself reaching to turn it off. Only because I wanted to know the full product before writing a review did I continue on.

Even the guest appearances of Lzzy Hale on “Close My Eyes Forever” or Serj Tankian on “Out Of Line” can’t fix the emptiness and plastic feeling that pervades this album.

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of this album is that David Draiman, who genuinely has a great voice that is unique, forceful, and memorable, didn’t take any chances. There is no growth or expansion.

The Final Word: At the end of the day, Device comes off as nothing more than Disturbed-lite. There is nothing exciting nor thrilling about this debut. Rather, Device is entirely forgettable and, most disappointingly, incredibly generic.

System Of A Down’s Serj Tankian Scoring Upcoming Video Game ‘Morning Light’

JonathanBarkan — Tue, 18 Dec 2012 21:00:26 +0000

Serj Tankian (System Of A Down) has announced that he has scored the upcoming Industrial Toys sci-fi shooter video game Morning Light, which will be hitting iOS devices Spring 2013. Tankian has also scored portions of John Woo’s 2007 video game Stranglehold, which was the sequel to the action film Hard Boiled (one of the greatest action films ever released).

Tankian comments, “I’m really enjoying working on Morning Star because it gives me the ability to create new musical worlds to complement the new visual worlds in the game. Though most of the gameplay will be action oriented cues, the stunning artwork and static scenes have inspired unique sounds unheard before.”

Industrial Toys CEO Alex Seropian adds, “We’ve been big fans of Serj’s for quite some time. The opportunity to collaborate with him on Morning Star gave us a way to take the game to a whole new level. We knew his score would be unique, but it’s his ability to interpret a scene or gameplay element and come up with something that makes it moodier, more dramatic or just more awesome that’s really got us pumped.”

Set 120 years into our future, Morning Star takes players aboard the MSRV-Joplin, a research vessel newly outfitted with military weaponry to explore a mysterious signal coming from within our Solar System. When inevitable disaster strikes, Tankian’s accompanying musical score provides the thrilling musical backdrop as players are transported across the cosmos to engage in an epic battle for the ages. The looming threat that awaits is unlike anything humanity has ever seen before.

You can watch a trailer for the game below.

Scars On Broadway’s Daron Malakian Recording Next Album All On His Own

JonathanBarkan — Wed, 14 Nov 2012 19:15:54 +0000

Daron Malakian (System Of A Down) will be recording the next Scars On Broadway album completely on his own, regardless of the fact that SoB has a full line-up. This means that Malakian will be tackling guitars, bass, drums, and vocals. The reason that he doesn’t want to release it as a solo album? “…I actually want to tour these songs and get behind them,” he explains.

He goes on further to say, “…I was ready to do another Scars On Broadway record. I’ve just been going with the flow, and the flow’s taken me here.”

The sophomore album has a tentative release date of early 2013.

Deftones And ISIS Members Join Up For New Band: Palms

JonathanBarkan — Wed, 25 Apr 2012 15:03:04 +0000

Jeez, do you think singer Chino Moreno is busy enough already? He’s already got Deftones about to hit the road with System of a Down AND he’s also got ††† (Crosses), the project with Far guitarist Shaun Lopez. Now he’s teamed up with ISIS members Aaron Harris, Clifford Meyer and Jeff Caxide to create a new band: Palms.

Aaron Harris: “Clifford, Jeff and I started Palms a little over a year ago out of a desire to continue making music together after ISIS ended. Chino joined shortly after and our sound took shape from there. We’ve worked really hard on this first release and are excited for people to hear it. It’s nice to be back behind the drum kit, and with this line up.”

Chino Moreno: “Being a huge ISIS fan I’ve always dug the moods these dudes convey with their sound. I am excited to combine my sense of creativity with theirs, and to have fun doing so.”

The album will see a release later this year via Ipecac Records, the home of ISIS.

[Rumor] System Of A Down And Deftones Teaming Up For Tour?

JonathanBarkan — Sun, 22 Apr 2012 22:58:58 +0000

Let’s keep this chalked up as rumor until tomorrow but there is speculation that System of a Down might be teaming up with Deftones for a full tour. Speculation arose when System’s Shavo was seen in a picture holding a Deftones laminate while, in a completely different picture, Deftone’s Chino was captured holding a System laminate. OMFG Of The Day: Fan Made KillMatriarch Video Is A Badass Horror Montage

JonathanBarkan — Fri, 08 Jul 2011 05:52:45 +0000

KillMatriarch, the band comprised of Matriarch and OnTronik (co-founder of System of a Down and The Apex Theory), have a pretty sweet mash-up cover called PsychoSunglasses that fuses The Talking Head‘s Psycho Killer with Corey Hart‘s Sunglasses At Night. Well, some devoted fan put together what might be one of the coolest music videos for the song and it uses countless horror movies as the visuals. Check out the amazing video after the jump.

Exclusive Interview: Serj Tankian

JonathanBarkan — Tue, 21 Sep 2010 01:20:28 +0000

Bloody Disgusting has scored an exclusive interview with Serj Tankian and is happy to bring to all you readers! After the jump, you can read about the new album, why the release tour was postponed, and lastly, how Serj suddenly comes to realize that horror may in fact be the foundation of a lot of what he does! All this and more, after the jump!

Serj’s new album, ‘Imperfect Harmonies‘, comes out tomorrow! Make sure to pick up your copy at your local retailer or order it on-line.

How are you doing?

Very well, thank you. Just getting over a cold.

Well, that’s no good! I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks!

Your album, ‘Imperfect Harmonies’, comes out in less than two weeks. How would you compare ‘Imperfect Harmonies’ to ‘Elect The Dead’?

Well, ‘Elect The Dead’ was more of a straight on rock record with some progressive elements and melodies. ‘Imperfect Harmonies’ is also a rock record but definitely not as straight rock. There are electronic elements, programmed beats, synths as well as legato orchestras and some horn solos. So I think that it is a very diverse record.

Do you think that old fans will still enjoy the sound and will this hopefully draw in new listeners?

I definitely do! We’ve had fans of Serj and fans of System [of a Down] listen to it and they’ve enjoyed it and liked it very much! I definitely hope that we draw in more fans but in the end, I put out music that I am very happy with and that I believe in and that’s what I do. The music came from the universe and I put it down and I expressed it and I hope that others will feel the same when they hear it.

You recently announced that the ‘Imperfect Harmonies’ Tour was postponed. Can you tell me a bit about why that happened?

Absolutely! Normally, I do tours after a CD comes out but here I did two Europe tours before ‘Imperfect Harmonies’ came out to give the fans something new. Upon coming back, the plan was to start the US tour the same day that the album came out but then the album was pushed back. So I felt that it was in the best interests to postpone the tour so that I could do press and interviews in LA and New York, which I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise.

The video for ‘Left of Center’ was recently released and has a strong visual theme of the Greek myth of Sisyphus. Are the lyrics trying to represent the same endless struggle?

Well, the video was done by Tawd Dorenfeld who also worked on some of the ‘Elect the Dead’ videos and I really like the video. It’s also funny that you mention that because I’m working on a musical, ‘Prometheus Bound’, and I wasn’t exactly a Greek mythology person in school [laughs]. But I do think there is something to that, this idea of an endless struggle. We as humans are moving forward in amazing ways with technology but we are moving backwards in terms of our intuition. In order for us, as a people, to progress, we need to find a balance and bring that sense of intuition back.

Throughout your videos, there have always been more extreme images and unusual concepts rather than the “norm”. Why do you find this appealing?

Hey, you’re the guy that comes from a website called Bloody Disgusting! [laughs]

[laughs]

The videos are mostly the vision of the director but I love what they do with it! I never saw a point in walking the median in terms of art. I think that it is important to challenge people and make them think outside of the box.

Your music, like the horror genre, pushes boundaries and challenges expectations. Are you influenced by horror at all?

Do you mean horror films? I haven’t really seen many.

Well, horror in general. The theme and the atmosphere of horror.

Oh, well…I never thought of it like that. I know that I’ve been told many times that I could write scores for horror movies. I know that my music does come from a darker place but I don’t know if it’s influenced necessarily by horror.

Music that you’ve produced as well as music from System of a Down has been on many horror soundtracks. What do you think is the relationship between your music or music that you’ve worked on and the horror genre.

Wow, that’s a good question…what do you think?

I personally think that music such as yours comes from, like you said, a darker place but is not immediately understood with just one listen. It takes time to fully understand what is going on and how everything interacts with one another.

Yeah, that sounds right! Like you say, it comes from a dark place but I always felt that with a lot of horror, there is also an underlying sense of humor going on. I remember the face of Jack Nicholson in The Shining and there is something funny about it. Perhaps that is also a part of it.

What are some of your favorite horror movies?

My family and I migrated to here when I was a little boy and my uncle, who was already living here, took me and my brother to a drive-in theater where there was a horror double-feature of Black Christmas and The Thing [Editors note: Going by timelines, I’m assuming this movie is The Thing From Outer Space]. And those movies scared the shit out of me and my brother! He was only 4 and I was 7 and…wait a minute! It’s all starting to make some sense! You could be right about this horror influence thing! [laughs] This is really fascinating to me!

So these I guess are some. Also, The Shining is brilliant. I also worked with William Friedkin on a movie called Bug with Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr. where i co-composed the film. He did The Exorcist which I also really enjoy.

But I’m still fascinated by this idea. I’m thinking there is something to all these horror questions!

Well, I wish I had some more for you but I’m all out! I want to wish you the best on the album release and I hope to see you soon on tour!

Thank you very much for these questions, they make me start to think that I should be working more with horror guys!

SERJ TANKIAN Squashes Reunion Buzz For SYSTEM OF A DOWN

SuperRadMike — Thu, 28 Jan 2010 00:16:25 +0000

A couple weeks ago bassist Shavo Odadjian posted a comment on his Twitter stating, “Are you guys ready for System???”. Drawing from this statement it would seem as if a possible System Of A Down reunion was in affect. Not the case.

When frontman Serj Tankian was asked if this were true he quickly had this to say…

“We always have offers to play, from festivals and stuff, but we have not decided to do anything as of yet,” Serj tells Billboard.com. “We’re in touch. We talk. We call it indefinite hiatus, and that’s how we still look at it. Nothing’s really changed.”
