Renny Harlin’s 1999 big-budget feature, Deep Blue Sea, reintroduced the shark to the summer blockbuster with grand spectacle and a heavy emphasis on action. Its direct-to-home release sequel, Deep Blue Sea 2, released in 2018 without much fanfare or critical praise, though the genetically enhanced sharks achieved something the preceding sharks could not – escape captivity to hunt in the open ocean. While the latest entry in this aquatic action-horror franchise continues part two’s dangling shark plot thread, it attempts to course correct and capture the original film’s sense of epic-scaled entertainment.

Deep Blue Sea 3 stars Tania Raymonde (Texas Chainsaw 3D, Lost) as Emma Collins, a marine biologist studying the effects of climate change on great white sharks with her team on the tiny, abandoned island of Little Happy. Along with the last two residents of this crumbling fishing village, they’re forced into a battle for survival with the arrival of Deep Blue Sea 2’s escaped bull sharks and the scientific team – led by Emma’s ex, Richard (Nathaniel Buzolic)- tasked with recapturing them.

Directed by John Pogue (Quarantine 2: The Terminal, The Quiet Ones) and written by Dirk Blackman (Underworld: Rise of the Lycans), Deep Blue Sea 3 doesn’t waste much time getting straight to the shark fun. The audience is given just enough of an overview of the little shanty island, which looks so unstable that you know it’ll provide decent fodder for shark destruction later. Emma’s idyllic studies of the great whites and gorgeous, serene dive sequences are almost immediately interrupted when she finds their recently ravaged carcasses in the sharks’ nursery. The arrival of the scientific team works to ramp up the tension and deliver exposition for those that skipped past the previous film. These genetically enhanced bull sharks are bad news, but so is the amoral and authoritarian team sent to retrieve them.

From the dialogue to the overwrought drama between Emma and her ex, this sequel makes no pretense about what type of film it’s aiming to be. It’s the precise type of cheese you’d expect from a Syfy original, but with a slicker coat of polish. While Pogue has his actors play it straight, it’s quickly apparent that the sole intent here is to bring big dumb shark fun. He goes for broke in over the top action sequences and death scenes, while giving a new spin on the most memorable moments from the original film. In other words, Deep Blue Sea 3 seems to desperately want to ignore its predecessor by paying homage to the first film.

There are big explosions, sinking houses, and plenty of shark bait to chum the waters. This setting, or more accurately the script, doesn’t allow for much tension the way the original film did. The tiny village doesn’t contain any long corridors or claustrophobic set pieces that allowed the aquatic villains to stalk prey unnervingly. Instead, while there are a few dive sequences that come close to evoking the same level of terror, Pogue goes all-in on a continuous ramp-up of the action. The more it barrels toward and through the climax, the more outlandish it gets. Entrails float, blood paints the town red, and things get silly. At least one death left this writer cackling for a long while after.

By conventional standards, Deep Blue Sea 3 couldn’t be called a good movie. The shark effects are about as realistic as they were in 1999, the dialogue is schlocky, and the setup is just as hokey. The thing is, none of that matters much if you’re having a good time. Deep Blue Sea 3 never bothers attempting to get deep with its characters or its plot, because it’s not that kind of movie. This movie is pure summer entertainment; it’s akin to watching one of those Six Flags’ amusement park stunt shows that unleashed pyrotechnics and mayhem over water. You didn’t go to those for the script; they provided a nice respite from standing in lengthy ride queues by way of whiz-bang theatrics.

If you prefer your shark horror with serious bite, or Deep Blue Sea induced severe eye-rolls, then the third entry won’t win you over. Just keep swimming along. However, if you have a weakness for sharks and don’t mind some tongue-in-cheek humor with your aquatic horror, Deep Blue Sea 3 serves up a surprisingly charming action spectacle. You may not remember too much about it after, but it’s an easily digestible thrill ride while it lasts. It’s escapism at its silliest, paired best with pizza, beer, and a (virtual) crowd.

Deep Blue Sea 3 swims onto Digital on July 28, Blu-ray and DVD on August 25, 2020.

Warner Bros Home Entertainment has officially announced Deep Blue Sea 3, which was recently rated R for “some violence, bloody images, and language.”

New discoveries and predators emerge in the middle of the ocean in Deep Blue Sea 3, which we’ve learned is set for release on July 28, 2020, on Digital and August 25, 2020, on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD.

In the new film…

“Emma Collins, an eminent marine biologist, and her crew have set up a mid-ocean laboratory over a sunken island town in the ocean where they are observing the first known Great White mating area. Unfortunately, the enhanced Bull Sharks that escaped in Deep Blue Sea 2 are also there with their own evolutionary goal: cross-breeding with the bigger faster Great Whites. The mission’s patron, Richard Lowell, believes that the Bull Sharks contain the key to intelligence enhancement, which he secretly intends to sell for big profits. Now, Emma and her crew are trapped on crumbling stilt houses mere feet over the ocean, caught between predators above and below the water.”

Deep Blue Sea 3 stars Tania Raymonde (“Lost”, “Goliath”) as Emma Collins, a marine biologist who is committed to making the world a better place and Nathaniel Buzolic (“The Vampire Diaries”) as an ex-boyfriend who has chosen money over ethics.

Other cast includes Emerson Brooks (“MacGyver”), Bren Foster (“The Last Ship”) and Japanese star, Reina Aoi as Miya, a grad student who is part of Emma’s small research team that is working on an island sinking in the Mozambique channel.

The third installment in the shark attack franchise was directed by John Pogue (Quarantine 2, The Quiet Ones) and written by Dirk Blackman (Outlander).

Here’s the trailer debut along with the Blu-ray cover art.

The chainsaw has stalled and won’t be revving up anytime soon…

It’s been well over a year since we reported on a sequel to Texas Chainsaw 3D, Millennium Films and Lionsgate’s followup to Tobe Hooper’s 1974 The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Blood Disgusting regular ‘Kyle K.’ was the most recent reader to ask me about the sequel to the John Luessenhop-directed film, which made $47M worldwide ($34M domestically). I figured we may as well check in with our sources to see if there was any progress. Unfortunately, we have non-news to report. Our sources tell us that the project is surrounded by crickets, most likely because the rights to continue on with the franchise are so incredibly expensive (something that was also relayed to me during the Platinum Dunes years). As of this writing, the project is likely dead.

UPDATE: As anticipated, a Millenium rep reached out for comment, telling us: “While the film’s development is taking a bit longer than usual, it is still an active project on Millennium Films’ slate.”

Either way, we have strong faith that Leatherface and the Sawyer family will once again create havoc across screens everywhere. You can’t kill the Sawyers…

Released in theaters on January 4 2013, the sequel followed a young woman who travels to Texas to collect an inheritance; little does she know that an encounter with a chainsaw-wielding killer is part of the reward (and her family). Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde and Scott Eastwood starred.

You can read my review of the film here.

It’s been rated “R” by the MPAA for “strong, grisly violence and language throughout.”

“Texas Chainsaw 3D picks up decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre seen in Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In it, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars.”

Leatherface has returned in a big way slashing his way to the top of the box office.

Lionsgate’s Texas Chainsaw 3D has raked in a whopping estimated $23 million proving that horror is king and that fans still want to see the Sawyer family in action.

Over the past few days we’ve been unveiling a slew of varied opinions, although Evan, Jonny and myself all seem to be in the same camp: we kinda liked it. You can read my take below, and watch this spot for news on a sequel in the next few months.

Spoiler Warning:

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is synonymous with hardcore horror. It’s a franchise that has never played it safe – it went for the jugular and hit you with a flurry of gut-punches. There is nothing “fun” about any of them (except Bill Moseley as Chop-top in the 1986 Tobe Hooper-directed sequel). This is the inherent problem with Texas Chainsaw 3D, Lionsgate’s quasi-sequel that picks up immediately after Hooper’s 1974 classic left off; not only is it not brutal, it’s not fun either.

Directed by John Luessenhop, the TC3D opening credits begin with an astoundingly cool montage of moments from TCM that bring viewers up to speed on the legendary original film and its iconic killer, Leatherface. It picks up immediately after Sally Hardesty (Marilyn Burns) escapes on the back of that pickup truck; she sends the police to the Sawyer house where a shootout kills the entire family… except a baby. Flash forward to present day where this baby, Heather Miller (Alexandra Daddario) is now a super sexy teenager (even though it has been 38 years) who doesn’t wear a bra and inherits the Sawyer mansion from a lost relative. What she doesn’t know is that she also inherits Leatherface.

The premise is genuinely cool, as it will not only be interesting to newcomers, but also gain the praise of hardcore horror fans. It was obvious since the casting announcements that the goal of the producing team was to first and foremost make the fans happy, an urge that shows onscreen with some loving nods to the original. But where they fail is in getting everything tonally in sync. Right after Leatheface is introduced, a bulk of the second act is spent investigating the shooting that took place in the beginning of the film. While Heather digs through police files, the film’s editing team attempts to inject some life by cross-cutting footage of a cop slowly working his way through the Sawyer house. Because we know what’s down there waiting for him, it’s not scary. At all.

There’s also a bland an attempt to villainize the locals, which comes off a bit trite, and turning Leatherface into an antihero is about as ill-advised as when the Predator teams with a human in Alien vs. Predator. There’s nothing scary about an iconic killer when you are sympathizing with them. This unusual turn of events may have worked better had it happened during the second act, instead of ending on that note.

This all bleeds back into the issue of tone. TC3D isn’t scary or brutal. While there’s plenty of blood, guts and gore, none of it is gritty – nothing makes your stomach curl (for example: having teeth knocked out or nails ripped off). In turn, it’s also not very fun. None of the characters are unique nor interesting, other than obviously wanting desperately to see the girls naked – which, by the way, doesn’t fucking happen.

Even if TCM3D were tonally in tune, it wouldn’t be well received. And the fact that it is ultimately a run-of-the-mill slasher means it’s basically only going to connect with hardcore TCM fans, whom are the only people I recommend see the film.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series is, like any other big horror franchise, riddled with its fair share of really bad entries. I don’t care what anyone says, TCM 3 and TCM: A New Beginning are awful. You can’t convince me otherwise. TCM 2 is charming and entertaining in its own way and while I’m not a huge fan of the remake it took the original concept and did its own thing, which I can admire.

But now we’ve entered Texas Chainsaw 3D, the first time a TCM movie has billed itself as a “direct sequel”, one that takes the story and events of the first film and expands upon the story. And what you end up with is a fun, if somewhat ridiculous, film that has some very interesting moments.

Warning: There are some spoilers in this review, so be warned.

The film opens up with, what I think, is a fantastic opening credits sequence. Clips from the original TCM have been used to give a very quick update on the story thus so far. Once we see original survivor Sally Hardesty escape, the film truly begins with police coming up to the Sawyer/Drayton house, demanding Jed (Leatherface). What could have been a peaceful handoff is disrupted by a local posse showing up and opening fire upon the house, killing everyone except for Leatherface and, ultimately, a little baby girl. Long story short, the baby is taken (have fun with the ridiculous dialogue during this scene) and that baby grows up to be the heroine of our film, Heather Miller (Alexandra Daddario).

By now you probably know the story, but here’s a very quick summary: Heather Miller finds out that she is adopted when her recently deceased grandmother (whom she has never heard of nor met) bequeaths to her the Sawyer Estate. Heather, along with a few friends and a (pointless and could’ve been rewritten as a 5th friend) drifter, go to Texas to see the estate. Leatherface gets out and, well, so begins the killing.

So let me get some of the technical aspects out of the way real quick. The 3D wasn’t actually all that bad. Instead of a ton of “in your face” moments, the 3D was more immersive. Yes, there are a few parts that are specifically meant for the 3D to get a chance to brag, but they are placed in good moments and are effectively utilized.

A complaint I had was that the movie was a bit dark at points. Not the kind of dark where “I think I see something but I’m not sure if it’s there,” but rather the “What is this? FearDotCom?” kind of dark. Also, the music of the film was rather uninspiring. If I were asked to hum even three notes of any of the cues or be shot, there’d be a big hole in my head right about now.

One of the more annoying aspects of the film was the camera’s constant need to hover right around the derrieres of Daddario and co-star Tania Raymonde. Look filmmakers, I know they’re sexy and very attractive but I don’t need their asses shoved in my face every chance you get.

Also, there was a complete lack of character development for Keram Malicki-Sánchez’s Kenny and Tremaine Neverson’s Ryan, who is the boyfriend of Miller. Oh, sorry. Ryan is explained to have slept once with Tania Raymonde and this means that, of course, they’ll sleep together again. Because, you know, once a guy cheats, he’s gonna cheat again without a second thought. Ugh…

A glaring error in the film is the timeframe. The original film took place in 1974. This film takes place in late 2012. Using a little bit of math, Heather should be 38 years old. Trust me when I say that she is NOT 38. So, in an effort to ignore this little detail, the year of the opening scene slaughter is never revealed. In fact, great pains are taken to ensure that we, the viewer, are never given that information. For all we know, it could’ve taken place in 1997. The year is blacked out in crime scene photos. The grave of Heather’s mother has wild grass perfectly placed over the year of death. It’s not something major but it’s one of those little details that made me want to look at the screen and say, “Really? You really think I’m that stupid?”

However, something that this entry did that none of the other entries have done is turn Leatherface into something of an anti-hero. For the first time, Leatherface is not simply a villain. Instead, he becomes someone that we actively cheer for.

I didn’t really know what I was expecting going into the film. I knew that I wanted to see bodies chopped up with a chainsaw and, for that, I wasn’t disappointed. When it comes to the story, there were some needless twists and turns that could’ve been written a bit more solidly had someone simply thought for two seconds. But, in the end, I found myself having a good time. It’s a great popcorn flick that has gore aplenty and several laugh out loud moments that make it a great way to pass 90 minutes.

“Texas Chainsaw 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. Leatherface has returned to theaters, only now he’s in 3-D!

Evan Dickson survived the onslaught and had this to say about Lionsgate’s hotly anticipated Texas Chainsaw 3D:

“If “dumb fun” can still be considered harmless – because sometimes it feels like we’re fighting for the very survival of cinema and all that – then that’s exactly how I’d peg Texas Chainsaw 3D. It’s not what most people would call a “good movie”, I’m not sure I can even call it that. If “dumb fun” can still be considered harmless – because sometimes it feels like we’re fighting for the very survival of cinema and all that – then that’s exactly how I’d peg Texas Chainsaw 3D. It’s not what most people would call a “good movie”, I’m not sure I can even call it that. But I do know that it engaged me, entertained me and made me laugh more than at least 60% of the horror movies I saw last year.

The film, from director John Luessenhop, is a direct sequel to the original 1974 film. There’s been a lot of talk about how this new version maintains the hard tone of that film, eschewing the campiness of the 1986 Tobe Hooper directed sequel. This isn’t exactly true. While it does indeed pick things up just a few hours moments after the ending of the original TCM, it quickly dives headfirst into a broad, bizarre terrain with seemingly no concern for the hyper-realism that shocked audiences almost 40 years ago. While the 1986 sequel was overtly, intentionally and brilliantly absurd, Texas Chainsaw 3D embodies a tonal realm familiar to anyone with an affinity for 70’s grindhouse trailers. Which is to say that engenders an appreciation that’s not quite ironic, but close enough.

No one in this movie is written, or behaves like, a human being. Our protagonist, Heather, is introduced as an infant during the opening raid on the Sawyer compound. In the film’s first severe break with reality, that infant is stolen in the middle of a mass slaughter by a hick who decides kicking a mother to death in order to complete his impromptu adoption falls appropriately under the banner of vigilante justice. We flash forward 20 years to the present day (which should be 1994 but is somehow 2012*) and Heather, played by Alexandra Daddario, is now a young woman. She also works as a butcher and likes to make collages out of chicken bones in her spare time. I suppose it’s here that Texas Chainsaw 3D throws its hat in the “nature vs. nurture” ring.

As you can see, we’re already well outside the aesthetic of the original film. It’s not what we were promised but, then again, it’s not exactly boring. Soon enough Heather discovers she was adopted and has inherited a vast estate in Newt, Texas. She and her friends hit the road, pick up a hitchhiker and head out on a mission to investigate. Once inside the house it doesn’t take long before the carnage starts. None of it is particularly scary, but it sort of flies by in a manner that I’d call “acceptable.” There’s a huge missed opportunity in the film’s carnival scene, which is only about a minute long, but that makes more room for Texas Chainsaw 3D to reveal its master plan. It’s here that the film takes the familial “blood is thicker than water” homily and runs to some truly bizarre (and morally murky) places with it.

If you weren’t a horror fan you wouldn’t be reading this review. While I might recommend that the public at large avoid this film, I have to admit I had a decent time with it and I think you will too provided you’re ok with the following checklist: 1. It’s not scary (the original remake trumps it in that regard). 2. It doesn’t really feel like a Texas Chainsaw movie. 3. It’s really dumb. 4. I read the comments and know a lot of you are looking forward to the carnival scene – don’t. That is not the reason to go.

Think long and hard. If you’re cool with those four points, then you’ll be okay with Texas Chainsaw 3D. And, selfishly, I want this movie to be a hit because there’s no end to the perverse joy I would take in the batsh*t sequel they seem to be setting up.

*I have no idea why this is. Perhaps to make room a FaceTime gag that’s the basis for the film’s best scene?

Bloody D reader ‘Kelsy Teague’ just tossed us one final look at Texas Chainsaw 3D before its release tomorrow. The pic displays the newest Leatherface (Dan Yeager) chucking a chainsaw at a police officer. It’s probably from the trailer or something, but it’s still pretty cool. Watch for our official review tomorrow.

After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars…“

Lionsgate’s Texas Chainsaw 3D picks up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The sequel was directed by John Luessenhop from a screenplay by Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan and Kirsten Elms.

Last month I spent the afternoon at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills chatting with stars Alexandra Daddario (“Heather”), Tania Raymonde (“Nikki”), Dan Yeager (“Leatherface”) and director John Luessenhop (Takers). After posting a video interview with Daddario and Trey Songz yesterday, I’m back to give you a final roundup of the thoughts of those involved. All of the cast seemed genuinely engaged by the material (and some are primed to come back for more, should that be the case). I also particularly enjoyed my chat with Luessenhop, who is incredibly friendly and laid back (and has an incredible affinity for the original film).

Head inside to check it out! Texas Chainsaw 3D hits theaters this tomorrow, January 4th.

Tania Raymonde on not watching the remake, “Since they were telling us that this was going to directly follow the original, I wanted to pay homage by just sticking to that mindset.” How was it working with [director] John Luessenhop? “It was great! He’s such a southern gentleman. I imagine it’s difficult taking on a franchise that means so much to so many people but the whole experience was profoundly cool.”

Next up was Alexandra Daddario, and I asked what it was like being around for some of the film’s more gruesome moments. “Some of the more gruesome stuff was added afterwards. But it’s definitely a challenge for me as an actress to emotionally reach that level of hysteria internally and then work yourself up physically to that level of panic. Keeping that momentum is a strange challenge.” On her character’s complex arc, “She has this moment where she’s trying to figure it out and it all clicks, and as the mystery unravels she becomes angrier and angrier and more set on doing what’s right for the good guy.”

Has she signed on for a sequel? “It’s one of those things where we cross the bridge when we come to it. But I think it’s a great character. I think she’s definitely in a darker place, but in some ways she feels like she’s more at home than she is at the beginning.”

As I step into the room to speak with the new Leatherface, Dan Yeager, he cuts an imposing figure. I ask him what it’s like stepping into the shoes once inhabited by Gunnar Hansen. “It was daunting. I never really considered the overall cultural import of it until I was well committed to it. I read the script and really loved it. It wasn’t really until I started meeting the mask and wardrobe people that I realized what I had gotten myself into. But I never thought I would fail.” Leatherface actually has a bit of a sensitive side. How did he convey that without words? “He operates largely out of fear. He’s constantly scared, the world scares him. And he responds to that fear with aggression. He has a very simple worldview… people are either family or they’re food. He kills dispassionately, not out of hatred or anger. I love the scene in the original where Leatherface actually kisses Grandpa on the head.”

Next up I spoke with director John Luessenhop about talks about the fact that he made a direct sequel to the original film. One that ignores the previous, more satiric, Part 2. Is he creating a new timeline a la the Star Trek reboot? “I love the original. But I was not a horror guy, I knew stuff like ‘The Shining’, ‘The Omen’ and ‘The Exorcist’. So for me it was great to go back and learn about some of these guys who made low budget movies and could put their own social thoughts into them. Because I was so taken with Tobe’s original, I wanted to ignore the sequels and honor that film.”

How did Luessenhop approach crafting a new Leatherface? “I wanted to continue his humanization. I like in the original when he frets after killing those kids. He doesn’t know what to do, and Dad’s coming home so he might be in trouble. When I came on this project Leatherface was more of a “Terminator”, just a killing machine. So when we rewrote it we intentionally kept the body count low, it had to be someone you knew. It had to have some meaning. We wanted the deaths to be alarming and to get your attention.” Luessenhop went on to elaborate on his approach to 3D, “I wanted you to be comfortable in a 3D world, but not have the 3D in your lap. I wanted to save that for heightened, extreme moments only. I didn’t want the audience to have eye strain.”

Of the deaths that made it into the final draft of the script, he was fairly exacting regarding their criteria for inclusion. “Each of the deaths had to be different. They had to be imaginative and shocking. Like in the first one.”

The film leaves things open for a sequel, does he see himself returning? “I think I’ve teed up a pretty good golfball for someone – whether it’s me or somebody else – to take wherever they want.”

In theaters January 4, 2013, the slasher is being directed by John Luessenhop from a screenplay by Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan and Kirsten Elms. Dan Yeager, John Dugan, Bill Moseley, Alexandra Daddario, Sue Rock, Tania Raymonde, Scott Eastwood, Gunnar Hansen, Tobe Hooper, Paul Rae, Keram Malicki-Sánchez, Ritchie Montgomery, Trey Songz, Marilyn Burns, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry and Richard Riehle star. It’s been rated “R” by the MPAA for “strong, grisly violence and language throughout.”

“‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’ picks up decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre seen in Tobe Hooper’s ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.’ In it, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars.“

A few new images for you from Texas Chainsaw 3D, which continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace.

Now we’ve got some new images (from Fangoria via Noticias De Terror), I like these pics a bit better than what I’m seeing in the trailers, they look grainier. Maybe it’s the scanner?

The slasher is being directed by John Luessenhop from a screenplay by Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan and Kirsten Elms. We now have the first TV Spot for Texas Chainsaw 3D, which continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace.

It mostly does what TV spots do, which is to say it’s shorter than a trailer and only has a few new shots. Somehow though, I actually like this TV Spot more than I like the official trailer.

In theaters January 4, 2013, the slasher is being directed by John Luessenhop from a screenplay by Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan and Kirsten Elms. Hot on the heels of yesterday’s still, we’ve now got a clip from Texas Chainsaw 3D, which continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace.

The clip (via Machinima) expands upon the scene from which yesterday’s still, featuring Nikki (Tania Raymondei) and Ryan (Tremaine ‘Trey Songz’ Neverson), was pulled. There’s some chainsaw action and a Shane Black-esque one liner. Question. Why would someone welcome Leatherface to Texas? He’s already there, right? It kind of makes even less sense than your stewardess or pilot welcoming you to a city they arrived in at the same time as you.

In theaters January 4, 2013, the slasher is being directed by John Luessenhop from a screenplay by Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan and Kirsten Elms. Dan Yeager, John Dugan, Bill Moseley, Alexandra Daddario, Sue Rock, Tania Raymonde, Scott Eastwood, Gunnar Hansen, Tobe Hooper, Paul Rae, Keram Malicki-Sánchez, Ritchie Montgomery, Trey Songz, Marilyn Burns, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry and Richard Riehle star. It’s been rated “R” by the MPAA for “strong, grisly violence and language throughout.”

Head inside for the clip!

The seventh incarnation taps into Hooper’s classic 1974 film that follows the lead character, Heather, who along with her friends, travel to Texas in order to collect an inheritance. The spin? What would you do if you found out your cousin was Leatherface, and he was now YOURS?

The cast and crew of Lionsgate’s Texas Chainsaw 3D, which has been rated “R” by the MPAA for “strong, grisly violence and language throughout,” talks to MTV in the following behind-the-scenes video.

It was almost NC-17 and has footage from Tobe Hooper’s 1974 original post converted to 3-D. Evan Saathoff dissected the trailer. We reported from the set. We even interviewed director John Luessenhop about the sequel!

In theaters January 4, 2013, the sequel is being directed by John Luessenhop from a screenplay by Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan and Kirsten Elms. The seventh incarnation is a direct sequel to Hooper’s classic 1974 film that follows the lead character, Heather, who along with her friends, travel to Texas in order to collect an inheritance. The spin? What would you do if you found out your cousin was Leatherface, and he was now YOURS?

Below is the final one-sheet for Lionsgate’s Texas Chainsaw 3D, which has been rated “R” by the MPAA for “strong, grisly violence and language throughout.”

Dan Yeager, John Dugan, Bill Moseley, Alexandra Daddario, Sue Rock, Tania Raymonde, Scott Eastwood, Gunnar Hansen, Tobe Hooper, Paul Rae, Keram Malicki-Sánchez, Ritchie Montgomery, Trey Songz, Marilyn Burns, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry and Richard Riehle star.

The seventh incarnation is a direct sequel to Hooper’s classic 1974 film that follows the lead character, Heather, who along with her friends, travel to Texas in order to collect an inheritance. The spin? What would you do if you found out your cousin was Leatherface, and he was now YOURS?

“‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace.

After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. On January 4, 2013 Lionsgate will gas-up their chainsaw and pull the cord on Texas Chainsaw 3D, the John Luessenhop-directed sequel to Tobe Hooper’s classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre that stars Dan Yeager, John Dugan, Bill Moseley, Alexandra Daddario, Sue Rock, Tania Raymonde, Scott Eastwood, Gunnar Hansen, Tobe Hooper, Paul Rae, Keram Malicki-Sánchez, Ritchie Montgomery, Trey Songz, Marilyn Burns, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry and Richard Riehle.

Yesterday we published an on set report from Bloody Disgusting correspondent Alyse Wax, and now I can share my interview with Luessenhop! We discuss the difficulties of taking on the mantle of the series, the tonal similarities between this film and Tobe Hooper’s 1974 original and whether or not this on tops the lame Next Generation in terms of actually having Chainsaw kills.

Head inside for the interview!

What does it feel like picking up this mantle? It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a Texas Chainsaw movie.

It’s a heavy mantle to pick up and run with. I’m such a fan of Tobe’s original movie, you’ve got to think twice before you step into those very big shoes. But we’re happy with it. We think it works on all of the levels that the audience wants to see. It’s a real story, it’s contemporized, it’s got horror and jumps. It’s down and dirty. It’s got everything that makes it a Chainsaw movie.

From the trailer it looks like it’s closer to Tobe’s film aesthetically than it is to the Platinum Dunes ones. And it doesn’t seem to have the satire of the second one [TTCM2], either.

Forget the second one. We do have some kitsch, I won’t deny that, but it’s faithful to horror and suspense. The look of it is not over manipulated, but I do think it has a popping look. It looks contemporary. It’s a fresh take on it. It does homage some of the elements of Tobe’s original, but they’re all done in clever ways.

I heard it was extremely hot onset.

That’s right. It was 107-114 degrees. There were people driven out to the hospital on one day. And technically, it would shut our cameras down. We were shooting native 3D which is much more challenging and cumbersome, but we wanted to avoid a lot of the post headaches people have on 3D pictures. But beyond that everyone worked really hard and there was a great amount of enthusiasm.

Do you have a favorite kill? Or one that was particularly difficult to pull off?

Three of them actually. There’s three I’m very proud of that are all done differently. One is in your face, one’s Hitchcockian and the other is an homage to the original film. I went back to Tobe’s original and sprinkled a bunch of fun moments back in, and they come at unpredictable times.

Is there an homage to the scene in the first one where Leatherface slams that steel door shut? That’s such a chilling moment.

Oh it’s iconic. I introduce it very early in the movie so you appreciate it. One of the characters approaches it but obviously doesn’t know the significance of it right away, so it raises the tension.

If I remember correctly, Next Generation didn’t even have one chainsaw kill in it. You fixed that, right?

Oh yeah! It wouldn’t be complete without one! You can’t call it Texas Chainsaw Massacre and not have a chainsaw kill! That one’s a mess!

Provided this one does well, do you have a sequel in prep?

I have a sequel idea. This film does tee-off a franchise run. One of the things I’m proud about it is that it’s about an idea that can feed into other films. There’s a lot of interesting elements in play.

How does Dan Yeager’s Leatherface differ?

Well the character is over 20 years older now than he was in the first one. So Dan really had to adjust his body language, he’s a more adult Leatherface. He really studied his character in order to bring that kind of mileage to him.

It’s hard to believe the film is finally hitting theaters as we sent Bloody Disgusting correspondent Alyse Wax to the Louisiana set back in August of 2011 (when it was titled Leatherface 3D). This morning we’re excited to finally bring you Alyse’s set report, along with two images exclusive to those who attended!

In addition to this report, Evan Dickson has interviews with John Luessenhop and Alexandra Daddario hitting later this week and early next week. Watch for more leading up to the Leatherface’s return right here on Bloody Disgusting.

By: Alyse Wax

Shreveport, Louisiana in the dead of August was not a thrilling thought for this city girl whose entire knowledge of Louisiana (outside of New Orleans) comes from “True Blood”. But the idea of checking out the latest Texas Chainsaw Massacre film definitely piqued my interest. After all, early word was that this installment – which they were calling Leatherface 3D on set – was meant as a sequel to Tobe Hooper’s original classic, and completely ignored every other Chainsaw-related flick.

The studio picked a good day for ten journalists to come visit the set (aside from the 98 degree heat and 50% humidity). The film opens right at the end of the original Chainsaw, and “moves into modern time,” according to producer Carl Mazzocone. “Our version opens on the last scene of [Tobe Hooper’s] original, and shows the Sawyers’s arrest. All the other Texas Chainsaw Massacres don’t exist to us,” Mazzocone tells us. It’s not so much what they are shooting – bits and pieces of the police standoff – but where. We are actually at the Sawyer farmhouse. The design team worked with “forensic precision” to recreate the original Chainsaw house in a barren field in the middle of a military base. From the swing out front to the slashes in the front door, it really feels like we are in 1974.

“It feels like home,” said Marilyn Burns. The original “Last Girl,” Burns played Sally in Hooper’s Chainsaw and has a cameo in Leatherface 3D as Grandma Verna. Gunnar Hansen, Hooper’s Leatherface, also has a cameo in the film as the Sawyer family patriarch (“Boss Hog” as he calls him), and he was actually startled to see the house. “I was shocked at how real it was. It was creepy seeing it again.” A tour through the interior of the house revealed only one thing out of place. “A chicken cage was a little off,” Hansen laughed. “Otherwise, everything was perfect.” From a fangirl perspective, being at the house was overwhelming. The interior was slightly less impressive than the exterior; in the daylight, it didn’t have the griminess, that stench you can almost smell through the screen. Up close, the “arm chair” was very obviously created out of plastic limbs. But walking up that long dirt road towards the iconic house was positively breathtaking. It was chilling, surreal, and almost indescribable – like walking into a different universe. I was heartbroken to learn that the following week, the entire structure would be burned to the ground.

Burns and Hansen aren’t the only two Chainsaw alums to have roles in this film. John Dugan returns as Grandpa, and Bill Moseley – who was not in the original, but played Chop-top in Hooper’s sequel – appears as another member of the Sawyer clan. “What could be more fun?” Burns asks.

It is interesting to note that during our eight hours or so on set, the only “new blood” we got to interview was Scott Eastwood (yup, Clint’s son). All we got out of him was that he played a young cop. We didn’t get to speak to top-billed Alexandra Daddario (Bereavement), who plays Heather, the girl who comes out to Texas to collect a mysterious inheritance and discovers she is related to the Sawyer clan because she wasn’t on set. [She was offered at a later date, and Evan Dickson will be posting his interview tomorrow!] We also didn’t get to speak to Dan Yeager, who plays Leatherface in this film due to scheduling issues.

Returning cast members were drawn back to the Massacre because they loved the script. “I heard it was going to be in 3D, and that was exciting,” said Burns. “Then I read the script and I loved it. I can’t tell you how many [Chainsaw] scripts I have read, tried to write, tried to produce… how many attempts from my friends…. I’ve seen so many millions of tries. I even went to see one of the remakes, because they told me it would be exactly like Chainsaw 1. But then I watched it and thought, ‘Wait a minute. This isn’t my movie.’ These people were dying, they came back to life, they added family, another town… forget it! But when I read this script, I was interested right from the beginning. I was amazed at what they had accomplished, all the twists and turns, all the surprises. It excited me!”

Hansen thought it was a good script as well, but it wasn’t what he imagined. “Years and years ago – before there ever was a second Chainsaw, I had a notion of what would make a good Chainsaw 2. Years have gone by. The older brother has escaped with Leatherface and the cook – who is not dead, but a pile of crumpled bones. They are living in an abandoned hotel at the edge of a small city in the Midwest. He has made a deal with the hotel owner to stay in residence and make sure the hotel doesn’t get vandalized. No one knows he is there with his brothers. Leatherface spends a lot of time just staring out the window, and at night he will take the cook and put him on his shoulders and go roaming through the forest. Some people decide to pull a scam on the owners and show up, and tell the cook that they are prospective buyers and have made this arrangement to stay a couple days at the hotel, to make sure it is what they want to buy. So this sets up, basically, another ‘teenagers trapped in an old house’ plot.”

What of this new Leatherface, anyway? We got to see one hazy iPhone photo of Yeager in full costume, and a few of us journalists got a split-second glance at a mask being transported – obviously a mistake, for it was quickly covered with Duvateen. Mike McCarty of KNB FX was heading up the effects on-set, and he promised that we would see the original Leatherface mask (no surprise since the beginning of this film overlaps with the end of the original). He also revealed that there would be “three new masks.” “The masks definitely have a lot to do with the story,” McCarty promises, as each new mask is the face of a new victim. “There is a mask that is one of his favorites, and there is a mask he wears at the end of the film.”

Naturally, the gore level was of particular interest. Though most of the violence and gore in Hooper’s original took place off-camera, the mind’s eye tricks most people into believing they are actually watching every gruesome detail. But in today’s age of torture-porn and shortened attention spans, you have to assume Leatherface 3D will be a bloodbath. McCarty says that his team arrived on set with about 20 gallons of blood, and that day he ordered more. “It’s a Chainsaw Massacre buffet,” he said simply. With hands stained red, I don’t doubt that.

I am a little concerned about the use of 3D. Mazzocone went with 3D because “I think 3D is cool.” He promises it will be “user-friendly” 3D that won’t cause nausea or eye strain, and that the movie was “written for 3D.” I strongly believe that 3D only works in more gimmicky situations (My Bloody Valentine 3D and Piranha 3D are both good examples) so I fear Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D will either become silly (not necessarily bad, but not the effect you want when trying to recapture the original) or the 3D will be pointless and a mere annoyance (as in the Fright Night remake).

It all sounds good on paper. The house looks phenomenal; the original cast approves. Mazzocone says that Tobe Hooper has been very supportive of their endeavor, and was going to make a cameo, but couldn’t make it work with his schedule. The producer speaks with a lot of love for Texas Chainsaw. “It’s a fine line between copycat and homage,” he explains. “I like the simplicity of Tobe’s. We respect his style, but don’t want to copy it.” Mazzocone specifically brought in Gunnar because he felt that after the original film, Gunnar was overlooked and typecast as an actor. “I wanted to show him respect.”

Curiously, in his deal to acquire the rights to Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Mazzocone bought the rights to six sequels. How many franchises can you think of that were still worthwhile by the time they got to sequel six? Ultimately, we will have to wait until January, 4 2013 before passing final judgment. – Alyse Wax

Some extremely revealing news has surfaced from an unlikely source. Website 3D Focus caught up with Markus Lanxinger, the Lead Stereoscopic Engineer on Lionsgate’s forthcoming Texas Chainsaw 3D, directed by John Luessenhop for release on January 4.

Texas Chainsaw 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace.

Within the following interview bits, Lanxinger reveals some shooting issues, talks about post converting archival footage, and how the slasher originally received an R-rating. Read on for the skinny!

Laxinger first told the site that the filmmakers were extremely worried about the fans calling out the studio for cashing in on the franchise to make a quick buck. He says they couldn’t be more wrong as this “sequel” was made for the fans: “We felt quite a bit of responsibility on set. The producer and the director were very concerned about it. For that reason they had some of the original cast enrolled in the movie. Everybody on the crew was required to watch the original [Texas Chainsaw Massacre]. I think that inspired us to do something that lives up to it. I could tell that the producer and director wanted to make something that appealed to the fans of the franchise.”

The site doesn’t provide any quotes, but states that, according to Markus, the schedule was tough. The entire filming process was completed in a 28 day 2D schedule. The Cinematographer allegedly had to be replaced towards the end and Markus unexpectedly had to take over the second unit as Stereographer. In order to complete the filming in time, the cast and crew switched to a 24 hour schedule.

The biggest reveal comes when Lanxinger speaks on post-converting footage to 3-D where he drops the bomb: “There were very few shots that we ended up converting on that film and the ones we did tended to be the archive footage and stills from the original movie.” Yes, there are scenes from Tobe Hooper’s original 1974 Texas Chain Saw Massacre in the 2013 sequel!

Speaking in regards to the film’s rating: “It initially had an NC-17 rating so we recut the movie and it got an R rating. There are certainly some gory elements but I also think there is quite some suspense in the movie. I think in America it’s very easy to get an R rating for violence and blood scenes. There are plenty of those but there are also moments where it is just scary with a suspense build up so I hope some of those scenes are going to stand out, not just the gory scenes.”

Earlier today the trailer was released for Lionsgate’s newly titled Texas Chainsaw 3D, which has been rated “R” by the MPAA for “strong, grisly violence and language throughout.” We nabbed the HD version and took a crap load of screengrabs for you. Check ’em all out after the break.

Texas Chainsaw 3D, in theaters January 4, 2013, is being directed by John Luessenhop from a screenplay by Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan and Kirsten Elms. Dan Yeager, John Dugan, Bill Moseley, Alexandra Daddario, Sue Rock, Tania Raymonde, Scott Eastwood, Gunnar Hansen, Tobe Hooper, Paul Rae, Keram Malicki-Sánchez, Ritchie Montgomery, Trey Songz, Marilyn Burns, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry and Richard Riehle star.

The seventh incarnation is a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper’s classic 1974 film that follows the lead character, Heather, who along with her friends, travel to Texas in order to collect an inheritance.

After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars…”

It’s here! We’ve just now landed the first official trailer for Lionsgate’s newly titled Texas Chainsaw 3D, which has been rated “R” by the MPAA for “strong, grisly violence and language throughout.” The footage looks way cheaper than the Platinum Dunes remake, and the trailer features barely any dialogue, so it’s hard to gauge how good this could be. Still, who knew the sound of a chainsaw revving could be such a luscious sound? What do you guys think?

We received a rash of e-mails and tweets from you guys after we reported Lionsgate’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D had been rated “R” by the MPAA for “strong, grisly violence and language throughout.” We checked in with sources close to the film and can reveal that the delay in getting an “R” was that the film has received an “NC-17” the first few times it had been submitted!

In addition, we can confirm that both the poster and trailer will be coming next month! I can hear that chainsaw revving already!

A movie we’ve been covering exclusively on Bloody for almost a year now has finally gone behind cameras.

Manson Girls, focusing on the female followers of cult leader Charles Manson, has quietly started production nearly a year after the project was announced.

Susanna Lo is producing via her Slomotion Studios and directing from her own script, with Taryn Manning (pictured), Tania Raymonde, Monica Keena, Stella Maeve, Estella Warren, Chad Faust, Ron Jeremy, Eric Balfour, and Bill Moseley all starring, as previously reported in various stories here on Bloody.

Manson Girls focuses on the period leading up to the 1969 murders of nine people. Manson and three followers were convicted in 1971 in the slayings. Lo told Variety that she’s aiming to illustrate how and why the girls came under Manson’s command.

“The girls were all very talented but it was a very seductive time,” she said. “We really don’t want to sensationalize the story any further than it already has been. I’ve always been fascinated by how the girls came under the spell of this strange, manipulative man.”

Manson is serving a life sentence in a California prison.
