Funko has released a handful of vinyl toys based on the Terrifier franchise in recent years, a few of them pushing the boundaries for the company and their typically adorable collectibles based on iconic pop culture characters. And their latest Terrifier 3 toy pushes those boundaries even further…

As you probably recall, Art the Clown presents Sienna Shaw with her dead brother Jonathan Shaw’s severed, skeletal head in the final act of Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3, revealing to both Sienna and the audience that the killer clown has massacred Jonathan. It’s always possible that Art was playing a trick on Sienna, of course, but for now it seems Jonathan Shaw is very much dead.

And Funko’s very first Jonathan Shaw toy, well, he’s not looking so great…

The upcoming POP! vinyl collectible depicts Jonathan Shaw’s decomposing head, with an adorable rat standing next to his drippy skull. Even in the world of Terrifier toys, it’s a gnarly one!

The Funko Shop Special Edition Terrifier 3: Jonathan Shaw POP! vinyl toy is coming soon.

Jonathan is played by Elliott Fullam in the Terrifier movies. Though you won’t recognize him here…

The Terror Tram returns to Universal Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights this year with a new host, Art the Clown, in “Terror Tram starring Art the Clown.”

This year’s event sees Art the Clown arriving on the Universal Studios Backlot with his blood-soaked bag of presents in tow. But when he realizes he’s too early for Christmas, he hijacks the Terror Tram to start a ho-ho-horrific holiday tradition all his own.

Ice Nine Kills will officially score the experience, putting a dark twist on classic Christmas songs.

It marks a reunion, as Ice Nine Kills previously teamed with the Terrifier team on “A Work of Art,” the band’s official song from Terrifier 3.

“We are forever honored that Terrifier writer/director Damien Leone and his team invited us to play in their sandbox of bloodshed. Art himself, David Howard Thornton, killed it in the ‘A Work of Art’ music video, and we’ve had Damien and several of his cast members at our Silver Scream Cons every year so far. Halloween Horror Nights is among our favorite destinations each season, and our fans love it, too. This is yet another natural step forward in our unnatural world of horror,” frontman Spencer Charnas said in a statement.

While the Terror Tram is exclusive to Hollywood, Universal Orlando Resort guests can encounter Art the Clown, along with the Killer Klowns from Outer Space, in scare zone Downtown Clowntown.

Halloween Horror Nights runs select nights at Universal Orlando Resort from Friday, August 28 through Sunday, November 1, and at Universal Studios Hollywood from Thursday, September 3 through Sunday, November 1.

Art the Clown will have a major presence at Halloween Horror Nights this year, with a “Downtown Clowntown” Scare Zone announced that’ll feature both Art and the Killer Klowns from Outer Space. But that’s not all, as the Halloween Horror Nights team announced at Midsummer Scream last night that Art the Clown will also be hijacking this year’s Terror Tram!

And the Terrifier slasher is bringing the music of Ice Nine Kills with him…

Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood previews, “Art the Clown arrives on the Universal Studios Backlot with his blood-soaked bag of presents in tow. But when he realizes he’s too early for Christmas, he hijacks the Terror Tram to start a ho-ho-horrific holiday tradition all his own — complete with music by Ice Nine Kills. Encounter shocking twists on Christmas classics and remember: the best gift is the screams you have along the way.”

HHN Creative Director John Murdy explains, “We wanted Art to be part of our event this year, but we wanted to make it something new, something different, something you guys have never seen before. So we decided to have Art take over the Terror Tram.”

Haunted Attraction Network previews the seven zones Art the Clown will take guests through…

  • Scary Artmas, the drop-off, where Vicki Heyes hands Art a fresh chainsaw, the Little Pale Girl takes his severed doll head, and Nutcracker characters rev their own saws to the Nutcracker Suite.
  • Art’s Christmas Tree Farm, whose motto is “we slice ’em, chop ’em, trim ’em, top ’em,” with intestines strung as garland and heads used as tree toppers.
  • The 12 Slays of Christmas, the Bates Motel redecorated as a Christmas party Art crashes, ending in a chainsaw showdown with a Snow Angel version of Sienna Shaw.
  • Art’s Christmas Cafe, where a Maitre D Art and his sous chefs plate holiday horrors alongside a Christmas Ham and a Christmas Turkey.
  • Hell for the Holidays, a blacklight zone at the War of the Worlds set full of Clockwork Orange-style evil snowmen.
  • Santa Art Is Coming to Town, where Art and the Little Pale Girl shoot down Santa’s sleigh with a World War II flak gun, surrounded by Jack Frost, the Snow Queen, a Christmas Death Angel, and toys escaped from Santa’s workshop.
  • Art’s Workshop, a gingerbread house on the outside and a gory parts shop on the inside, its doors labeled dismemberment, decapitation, and disembowelment, where Santa’s corpse is taken apart.

Along the way, you’ll be treated to original Christmas music from Ice Nine Kills.

Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood runs select nights September 3 – November 1.

One of the many horror movies spoofed in the new Scary Movie franchise reboot was Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3, further cementing Art the Clown’s status as a true pop culture icon in the world of modern horror. Scary Movie specifically parodied the memorable scene in Terrifier 3 where Art the Clown hands out “gifts” to children in a mall while dressed up as Santa, and you may have spotted horror icon Felissa Rose in a cameo appearance in that scene!

But who played Art the Clown in the Scary Movie spoof scene? Actor Fedor Steer was the man behind the black & white clown makeup, with his character credited as “Artie Claus.”

Fedor Steer is no stranger to the horror genre, with roles in “Stranger Things,” “The Haunting of Hill House,” and “Evil” paving the way for his Artie Claus performance in Scary Movie.

Steer played William Hill in Mike Flanagan’s “The Haunting of Hill House,” Monstrous Mourner #1 in the fourth season of “Stranger Things,” and several characters throughout the horror series “Evil” including The Manager, Boop Demon, Jinn, and Massive Stick Demon.

Fedor Steer also played a Krampus Guest in Christmas movie Red One starring Dwayne Johnson, as well as Ezra in Haunted Mansion (2023), Vito the Chopper in Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King movie Doctor Sleep, Djinn in “Sleepy Hollow” Season 4, Babyfaced Man in the first season of “Bloodline,” and Cupcake the Clown in the 2014 movie Jersey Shore Massacre.

Back in 2012, Fedor Street had even directed his own horror short titled BFF Zombie, which he also appeared in. You can watch the trailer for BFF Zombie over on YouTube.

Outside the entertainment world, Steer’s life has been just as interesting. Steer’s IMDb bio notes, “Fedor has a diverse range of life experiences. He has been a navigation officer in the Canadian Coast Guard and on cruise ships, a school teacher, a swim coach, a triathlete, and has lived in a number of countries overseas, including Thailand and the UAE. He also owns and operates a software company, Gradicus, that builds database applications for K-12 schools.”

Fedor Steer will next be seen in the post-apocalyptic horror movie Crossed from director Rob Jabbaz (The Sadness), a feature adaptation of the depraved Garth Ennis comic book. He’ll be playing the character Face in the upcoming movie about a twisted apocalyptic pandemic.

Fedor Steer’s appearance as Artie Claus is brief in Scary Movie, but he notes in an Instagram post that more footage was shot for the Terrifier 3 spoof scene. Steer explains, “Sadly, the scene where I cut off [the mall Santa’s] arms and head and twirl in the fountain of blood spewing from his neck didn’t make the movie. Just trust me when I tell you it was awesome!”

Steer tells Sledgehammer Horror, “David Howard Thornton really did a fantastic job as Art the Clown. And I got an even better appreciation of how well he did when I started preparing for this part. I got it because Bob Kurtzman and Marcia King who did the makeup already knew me. I worked with them three or four times before. They had my head cast. In order to save time and go with somebody they knew, they recommended me to the director and producers.”

“That was just fun,” Fedor Steer adds in his chat with Sledgehammer Horror. “It was one day of shooting. We got to just enjoy the day… and see some really cool results from it.”

You can follow along with Fedor Steer’s career over on his Instagram page!

The horror movie spoof franchise Scary Movie returns to theaters next month with a brand new reboot installment, and the film has naturally received an “R” rating from the MPA.

But what kind of Rated ‘R’ content can we expect from the new Scary Movie?

Arriving in theaters June 5, 2026, Scary Movie has been Rated ‘R’ for “crude sexual content, graphic nudity, strong violence, and drug content and language throughout.”

Marlon Wayans (“Shorty”), Shawn Wayans (“Ray”), Anna Faris (“Cindy”), and Regina Hall (“Brenda”) reunite for the new Scary Movie, with the cast also including Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, Jon Abrahams, Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans, Kim Wayans, Benny Zielke, Cameron Scott Roberts, Heidi Gardner, Olivia Rose Keegan, Ruby Snowber, Savannah Lee Nassif, Sydney Park, and Felissa Rose.

Scary Movie will slash through reboots, remakes, requels, prequels, sequels, spin-offs, elevated horror, origin stories, anything with the word legacy in it, and every “final chapter” that absolutely isn’t. A whole lot has changed in the horror genre since the Wayans Brothers were in charge of the franchise; their involvement ended with Scary Movie 2 back in 2001!

Michael Tiddes (A Haunted House) directs Scary Movie 6 from a script written by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, original Scary Movie director Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans (Scary Movie 2), and Rick Alvarez (A Haunted House).

One of last year’s most popular decorations, Spirit Halloween‘s Terrifier animatronic is back in stock in celebration of Halfway to Halloween.

Priced at $199.99, the 6’2″ Art the Clown features realistic movement, a melody of horn noises, and removable flower sunglasses from Terrifier 2.

“This supernatural clown stands at 6 feet 2 inches tall and plays a melody of horn blowing sounds as he comes to life. The head and torso of this lifelike animatronic feature left and right movements, and the head includes a pair of removable flower sunglasses just like Art has on the big screen. Watch in fear as he beckons at you with his waving left-hand motion and be wary not to fall for any of his torturous tricks.”

But that’s not all! Spirit Halloween also has an animatronic of Art the Clown dressed up as Santa from Terrifier 3.

For $269.99, the 6’3″ blood-soaked Santa features realistic movement, audio from Terrifier 3, and removable Christmas tree sunglasses.

“This Art the Clown Santa Claus is the perfect way to spread Christmas fear all year round. Watch him come alive with sweeping side-to-side torso movement and a blood-soaked appearance inspired by Terrifier 3. His arm waves back and forth as authentic audio from Terrifier 3 fills the air. This bloody killer Santa even includes a pair of removable Christmas tree sunglasses.”

While you’re browsing Spirit Halloween, be sure to take a look at the new Alien Xenomorph animatronic, which stands 6.8″ tall and costs $449.99.

David Howard Thornton will return as Art in Terrifier 4. Writer-director Damien Leone is currently developing the latest installment in his gory slasher saga with the hopes of entering pre-production this spring.

One of the most popular stars on the horror convention circuit the last several years has been David Howard Thornton, who quickly became a fan favorite after playing modern horror icon Art the Clown in Damien Leone’s Terrifier, Terrifier 2, and Terrifier 3. He’ll be back in the upcoming Terrifier 4, but David Howard Thornton first has romance on his mind.

The actor shared a video to his Instagram account this weekend announcing his proposal to girlfriend @lapetitejada, which happened at the Huntsville Comic & Pop Culture Expo in Huntsville, Alabama. But this wasn’t just any ordinary proposal. David Howard Thornton proposed while fully dressed up as the Terrifier franchise’s Art the Clown… and she said YES!

You can watch the romantic proposal video down below.

David Howard Thornton’s video has over 1 million views at the time of this article being written, and the comments section is flooded with congratulations from the likes of Damien Leone, Rose McGowan, Rhea Ripley, David Arquette, Felissa Rose, Barbara Crampton, Jack Quaid, Mike Flanagan, and David Howard Thornton’s Terrifier 2 & 3 co-star, Lauren LaVera.

Congratulations, David and Jada!!

So what’s the latest on Terrifier 4, you ask?

“Since there’s so much Terrifier 4 speculation and false information out there, I wanted to drop in and give an official update,” Leone said back in February. “The script is very close to completion, and I’m hoping to begin pre-production this Spring. This is the most precious script I’ve written for many reasons, but it’s also the most challenging. There’s a lot of material to tackle and a lot riding on this one, not just creatively but emotionally.”

“We’ve built something special together over the years,” Leone continues. “The cast and crew who have been here since the beginning deserve a finale that honors their dedication, and the fans who’ve championed this franchise deserve something unforgettable.”

“In all honesty, I’m thrilled with the way it’s turning out and confident it will deliver,” he added at the time. “I will officially announce when the script is complete on my social media pages which also means we’ll be moving into pre-production. If you don’t see it coming from or confirmed by me, then it’s not official. I promise it will be worth the wait!”

David Howard Thornton will return as Art the Clown, and he promises it will be a “bat shit insane” finale. Lauren LaVera is also expected back as Art’s adversary, Sienna Shaw.

If you were to ask horror fans to name a film they consider “religious horror,” most would likely name a movie from around fifty years ago—Rosemary’s Baby (1968), The Exorcist (1973), or The Omen (1976). Some may name folk horror of the era, like The Wicker Man (1973) or maybe Witchfinder General (1968). Some deeper cuts may come up like The Abominable Doctor Phibes (1971), Race with the Devil (1975), Alice, Sweet Alice (1976), or The Sentinel (1977). Perhaps something from the Italian masters like Lucio Fulci’s Don’t Torture a Duckling (1972) or a film from Dario Argento’s “Three Mothers” trilogy.

Clearly, the late 60s and 70s were a high-water mark for the twin subgenres of religious and folk horror, and looking back, it is easy to understand why. The world was rapidly shifting, and that instability led to a lack of trust in failing long-standing institutions like political systems and the religious establishments. New religions and cults sprang up like weeds across the world, but especially in the United States, some resulting in reprogramming, abuse, murder (such as the Manson Family), and mass suicide, as in the 1978 Jonestown massacre.

After the shocking fury of that dark episode of history, the trend of religious horror cooled a bit. Though there are great examples from the 1980s, John Carpenter’s Prince of Darkness (1987) and Wes Craven’s The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988) come to mind, both films examine religion through the lens of science and academia rather than faith, marking a striking difference from the previous generation. Despite the decade being the height of a major Satanic Panic, most films focused on the influences “corrupting the youth,” such as heavy metal music, as in Trick or Treat (1986) and Black Roses (1988), or even television, as in Poltergeist (1982). There was a flurry of faith-infused horror in the 90s, as in The Prophecy series (beginning in 1995 and stumbling along to 2005), End of Days, and Stigmata (both 1999), but these also have a very different feel from the religious horror of other periods and are often infused with a tongue-in-cheek quality. Again, the trend quickly faded, this time into the remake and torture-obsessed 2000s, though there are notable exceptions like Martyrs (2008).

The Conjuring introduced fictionalized versions of The Warrens played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga

Then something surprising happened in the mid-2010s; a film featuring a pair of Catholic superheroes made a killing at the box office. That film was The Conjuring (2013) and, despite its tendency to play fast and loose with the facts, it brought renewed interest to religious horror, sparking not just a series of films, but an entire Conjuring universe. Other successful, even genre-defining, religious and folk horror films followed, including The Witch (2015), The Wailing (2016), Mandy (2018), Hereditary (2018), and many more. By the 2020s, the wave of faith-infused horror was set to match or even exceed the 1970s just in sheer volume of films and depth of examination of religious subjects.

The relevant question is—Why now?

Of course, there are many factors, both known and unknown, that contribute to trends such as these, but at its most basic level, horror examines fear. Key underlying roots of fear are mistrust, abuse, and the threat of harm. Mistrust of religious institutions is at an all-time high for several reasons, and as a result, participation in religious communities is at an all-time low. This slide began in the early 2000s with the rise of the “Nones,” or people with no religious affiliation, but has skyrocketed since 2007. According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, 28% of U.S. adults describe themselves as atheist, agnostic, or “nothing in particular.”

Many young people (and some older folks as well) who were raised in religious traditions have embarked on journeys of deconstruction and re-examination of their childhood faith. Related to this is the sharp rise in those who call themselves “exvangelical” or something akin to that. At the same time, the most conservative element of the religious establishment has dug in its heels, resulting in greater extremes of belief. As a result, political factions within religious communities have become more pronounced, specifically within Christianity, resulting in a highly politicized, firebrand version of the faith usually called Christian Nationalism. All these subjects are fascinating and have been widely explored recently, but when it comes to horror, these factors and others have created a diverse religious ecosystem ripe for exploration by filmmakers.

Russell Crowe fending off evil in The Pope’s Exorcist

2019 became a flashpoint for the new explosion of religious horror with several films, big and small, including Midsommar, Saint Maud, Doctor Sleep, Eli, Color Out of Space, Daniel Isn’t Real, Satanic Panic, and The Vigil, among others, exploring various aspects of faith, religion, and spirituality. This wave has only continued to grow in the years since. There are some notable differences this time around, though. With exceptions like the film version of The Warrens (who are quite different from the real-life couple) and Father Amorth (Russell Crowe) of The Pope’s Exorcist (2023), also based on a real person, there are fewer “religious superheroes” in the current trend. There is a palpable distrust of religious institutions that runs through many of these films and more commentary on the extremes of belief.

There is also much more diversity, as attitudes toward the religious pluralism of modern society have evolved. Where the films of the 1970s largely focused on Catholicism, the new crop of religious and folk horror films explores a much wider variety of religious practices.

Most faith-infused horror films from recent years fall into three broad categories: classic and neo-classic religious horror, religious tapestry, and films that use religious imagery and subtext. Classic religious horror is the easiest to spot as it takes on matters of faith head-on, even engaging in on-screen discussion and debate. Tapestry films weave faith and religion into the fabric of the characters and story. Imagery and subtext films follow a similar method of mythic storytelling, like Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter, but using religious iconography to make a broader point.

Hugh Grant in Heretic
Hugh Grant preaches to a captive audience in Heretic

One of the best examples of neo-classic religious horror is Heretic from 2024, a recent surprise hit that literally debates the merits of belief and disbelief on screen. In it, Latter-Day Saints (often called LDS or Mormon) missionaries Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) are invited to the home of Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). They are quickly drawn into his web, where he works to systematically undermine their belief system. The film is a surprisingly nuanced exploration of religious history and the very nature of belief, filled with symbolism and illustration.

Other classic-style religious horror films are the various exorcism movies like The Pope’s Exorcist and The Conjuring films, which are all entertaining even if they do not do much in the way of addressing current religion-intwined fears. The Vigil, on the other hand, follows a young man, Yakov Ronen (Dave Davis), through a shift from the ultra-orthodox Hassidic community of his youth to a new expression of his Jewish faith as he faces a dybbuk during a terrifying night.

Also in 2024, two films released within days of one another tackled the role of church patriarchy head-on. Immaculate and The First Omen share very similar setups—a young American nun joins a convent in a foreign land only to find she is inexplicably pregnant—but tackle the issue in different ways. These films, along with the Rosemary’s Baby prequel Apartment 7A (also 2024), are direct responses to the overturn of Roe vs. Wade, which had stood for fifty years, and the role of the religious establishment, specifically the Catholic church and the religious right, in the reversal. Again, uncertainty leads to fear and horror examines the roots of those fears in ways that few genres can, tackling hot-button issues through story and spectacle in the context of fantasy and the supernatural.

Miles Caton goes to church in Sinners

Among the best examples of “tapestry” religious horror films of recent years are The Black Phone (2021), X and Maxxxine (2022 and 2024), and Sinners (2025). All these films feature characters with either current or past religious beliefs that have an impact on the events of the film. Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) in The Black Phone engages in open dialogue with Jesus, one that is refreshing in its frankness. At one point, when the search for her brother Finney (Mason Thames) appears particularly hopeless, she exclaims to her dark room, “Jesus, what the fuck!?” Maxine (Mia Goth) in Ti West’s X trilogy is slowly established as the wayward daughter of a fundamentalist preacher who was clearly an abusive man.

In Sinners, the gifted blues guitarist and singer Sammie (Miles Caton) is given an ultimatum by his preacher father to choose between the church and the blues. He chooses the blues, but if the film’s “This Little Light of Mine” tag is any indication, his father’s insistence on a choice is really a false dichotomy, and Sammie can serve the faith of his youth through his musical gifts.

The subtext and imagery category contains multitudes, some of which are unexpected. Doctor Sleep is a story of recovery through and through, but it uses the three temptations of Jesus as an illustration for Dan Torrence’s (Ewan McGregor) personal struggles with alcohol. Ultimately, he sacrifices himself, with his mother at his side, to overcome the forces of evil, led by Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson), and save young Abra Stone (Kyleigh Curran).

One of the truly unexpected uses of religious imagery in the service of storytelling is in Terrifier 2 and 3 (2022 and 2024). The character of Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera) experiences a number of Christlike trials, including flogging, death, and finally resurrection, which gives her the power to confront the very Beast of Revelation-like Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton). (I examined this type of imagery more thoroughly for Bloody Disgusting in a piece called “The Beast and the Angel: The Surprising Biblical Imagery of Terrifier 2”). The third film continues this aspect with more specifically Roman Catholic imagery.

Sienna (Lauren LaVera) bleeds for Art’s sins in Terrifier 3

The recent, and much maligned, HIM (2025) also falls into this category, which explores the human urge to ascribe religious devotion to celebrity; in this case, sports icons. Using imagery from a variety of establishment and non-establishment faiths, such as Native American spirituality, HIM examines the temptations and pitfalls inherent to the ambition of becoming the “greatest of all time.” Along the way, it evokes the words of Jesus, asking, “What does it profit a person to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”

Much more could be said, and many more films could be named, along with various other subgenres, including films dealing with Witches, Satanic Serial Killers, Demons, Cults, Religious Fanatics, Visions of Hell, and more. Each year, as I expect the trend to fade, more films continue to be released. So far this year, films with at least some religious element have included 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Mother of Flies, The Severed Sun, and Psycho Killer. Upcoming releases like undertone, They Will Kill You, Hokum, and even Ready or Not 2: Here I Come at least hint at the possibility of religious exploration.

There is no way of knowing how long this wave will last, but it is clear that, at least for now, the resurrection continues.

Art the Clown is officially headed to Scary Movie 6, and he’s bringing some Terrifier franchise veterans along with him.

Dread Central reports that Sleepaway Camp icon Felissa Rose, who appeared in Terrifier 2, gets “drenched in blood” in a scene that spoofs Art the Clown blowing up a group of children at the mall in Terrifier 3.

Michael Leavy, who played Will the exterminator in Terrifier and produced its sequels, also makes a cameo in the sequence.

“It was extremely surreal on so many levels,” Leavy commented. “Not only was it wild to see a character from a franchise we helped pioneer become important enough to be parodied in a major Hollywood production, but it was especially meaningful because it happened within the go-to spoof franchise I grew up loving. What an honor!”

Scary Movie 6 will be released in theaters on June 12, 2026 from Paramount.

Anna Faris, Regina Hall, Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Jon Abrahams, Lochlyn Munro, Dave Sheridan, Chris Elliott, and Cheri Oteri are all returning for the reboot.

The ensemble cast also includes Olivia Rose Keegan, Savannah Lee Nassif, Cameron Scott Roberts, Sydney Park, Gregg Wayans, Ruby Snowber, Benny Zielke, Damon Wayans Jr., Kim Wayans, and Heidi Gardner.

Michael Tiddes (A Haunted House) directs from a script by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, original Scary Movie director Keenen Ivory Wayans, and Rick Alvarez (A Haunted House).

Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Heretic, Longlegs, Get Out, Nope, and Sinners are among the other films being parodied in the new installment.

Scary Movie launched in 2000, followed by Scary Movie 2 in 2001. The Wayans brothers’ involvement ended there, but the series continued with 2003’s Scary Movie 3, 2006’s Scary Movie 4, and 2013’s Scary Movie 5.

When it comes to holiday horror movies, it’s safe to say that Christmas has by far emerged as the most prolific. That’s only increased exponentially since the turn of the 21st century, ensuring a glut of holiday horror offerings this time of year.

While Christmas horror has become as rampant as shark flicks, quantity doesn’t always equate to quality. As with any crowded subgenre, there are more cinematic lumps of coal than not in the holiday horror sphere, but that doesn’t mean that the 21st century hasn’t delivered a few noteworthy entries worthy of quintessential holiday viewing status. But what makes a worthy Christmas horror movie?

The ideal Christmas horror movie captures the essence of the holiday through theming, both in imagery and spirit. In other words, the film should be saturated in holiday iconography (with few exceptions, of course), with the holiday having a direct impact on the film’s events. It should also be horror, which means that crowd-pleasing genre adjacent thrillers like Violent Night don’t count, even if bloody enough for a horror fan.

With that in mind, we’ve selected the six best Christmas horror movies of the 21st century so far…

Inside (2007)

Horror Queers Inside

Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury’s debut begins with a tragedy, plunging its pregnant lead character into a depression and kickstarting an intense, visceral bid for survival over Christmas. It’s a ruthless entry in home invasion horror that doles out punishment and pain, a peak of New French Extremity. Béatrice Dalle’s La Femme makes for a bone-chilling villainess that ensures there’s no shortage of Christmas reds splattered all over the home. The excess of bloodshed is about the only prominent reference to the holidays in this grim holiday shocker, but you’ll be too busy holding your breath from the relentless tension to notice. There’s also a strong argument to be made that few films capture the melancholy the holidays can evoke like this movie, as it centers on a woman too grief-stricken to celebrate, leaving her vulnerable to attack while the neighborhood is quiet.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)

A holiday horror story from Sisu director Jalmari Helander that hearkens back to Santa’s darker roots, this Finnish fantasy horror follows Pietari, a boy whose belief in Santa is the very thing that will save everyone when an archaeological dig unearths the real thing. Too bad the real thing is the stuff of nightmares. Filthy elves galore, reindeer, gingerbread, and one monstrous version of Santa bring the yuletide fun and chaos. Rare Exports puts precedence on the elves when it comes to Santa’s reign of terror; the mythical patron of Christmas is relegated to looming threat while his naked helpers do the dirty work of rounding up naughty children.

Krampus (2015)

Krampus Christmas Horror Movie- best of 21st Century?

When Max’s (Emjay Anthony) dysfunctional family won’t stop fighting, and nothing goes as planned, he turns his back on Christmas and accidentally summons Krampus. All hell breaks loose as Krampus and his horde of minions punish Max and his family in Michael Dougherty‘s fan favorite holiday horror movie. Arguably the definitive holiday horror movie of the century so far by pure Christmas theming alone; every single plot point, creature, and detail is in service of the holiday here. It’s both naughty and nice, in terms of festive horror spirit and warm cozy feels.

Better Watch Out (2016)

Christmas horror movie Better Watch Out

Chris Peckover’s home invasion horror movie breaks all the rules. Better Watch Out follows 12-year-old Luke Lerner (Levi Miller) as he’s left alone for the night with babysitter Ashley (Olivia DeJonge) while his parents attend a holiday party. Harboring a longtime crush, Luke is hoping to seduce Ashley. Their quiet night of pizza and horror movie watching is interrupted first by Luke’s best friend Garrett (Ed Oxenbould) and then by a masked intruder who means harm. Full of biting, pitch-black humor, expect this one to get mean.

Anna and the Apocalypse (2018)

Anna and the Apocalypse 21st century horror

There’s no such thing as a holiday ending in this coming-of-age zombie musical, which means that there are some devastating losses for the high school teens who find themselves dealing with an apocalypse over Christmas. But it’s hard to feel too down with such upbeat, earworm songs and choreography that embrace the holiday spirit in a massive way. Director John McPhail packs this winsome horror musical full of Christmas iconography before splattering the snow red with zombie carnage.

Terrifier 3 (2024)

Terrifier 3 - Art the clown celebrates Christmas
Photo Credit: Jesse Korman; Courtesy of Dark Age Cinema

In Damien Leone‘s sequel, Sienna and her brother attempt to embrace the Christmas season and put their trauma behind them. That’s precisely when Art the Clown pops back up to spread holiday fear. Terrifier 3 decks the halls when it comes to holiday theming, with Art gleefully trying his hand at playing Santa in the way only this horror icon could manage. Also true to Christmas, it’s a sequel that really leans into the bible when it comes to its lore and iconography, too. That it became such a box office smash hit and is Certified Fresh on both the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and Popcornmeter solidifies this carnage-fueled movie as one of this century’s most significant holiday horror releases.

Season’s bleedings to all when it comes to holiday themed horror, especially in the slasher realm. Christmas Evil – Fandango at Home, Fawesome, Kanopy, Prime Video, Roku Channel, Screambox, Tubi

Ever since Harry Stradling (Brandon Maggart) saw mommy kissing Santa Claus as a child, he grew up with an unhealthy Christmas obsession. As an adult, he keeps his home decked out in holiday décor and seeks to spread cheer at the toy factory where he works. Harry even spies on the neighborhood kids to keep track of who is naughty or nice. But Harry’s fragile mind and a series of unfortunate events lead him to snap over Christmas Eve, spurning a murder spree in his quest to become an authentic Santa Claus. Christmas Evil isn’t your average killer Santa flick; it’s a quirky character study of a broken mind. There’s often as much humor as there is tragedy in store for poor Harry.

Deep Red – AMC+, Fandango at Home, Mubi, Pluto TV, Shudder

Holiday Slashers - Deep Red

Opening with a scene set at Christmas, in a family room decorated with holiday trimmings and a tree, the shadows of two people entangled in a struggle fill the empty spaces on the wall until one is stabbed to death. It’s that traumatic event that drives the central mystery in Dario Argento’s bloody giallo film. Violent demises, one memorable creepy puppet, and a delightful killer twist offsets that the holiday-lite theming. The film also marked the first time the director worked with progressive rock band Goblin, who would subsequently compose music for several other Argento films. A visual showcase of style and gore, the death scenes in this film are fantastic.

It’s a Wonderful Knife – AMC+, Disney+, Hulu, Shudder

It’s a Wonderful Knife Review

This It’s a Wonderful Knife meets Scream 2 Christmas slasher comes from writer Michael Kennedy (Freaky) and director Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls). The pair plunge their central characters into a bizarro snow globe of horrors, wearing their cinematic influences on their sleeves throughout. It’s a Hallmark holiday movie for outcasts and horror fans alike, delivering no shortage of holiday cheer perfect for this time of year. MacIntyre’s latest may not quite seamlessly nail its high concept genre mashup, but with some outstanding performances and a sweet gooey emotional center, it effectively tugs at your heartstrings and captures the spirit of Christmas. So you get the best of both worlds: holiday cheer and violent slasher kills.

Jack Frost – Hoopla, Pluto TV, Prime Video, Roku Channel, Tubi

Jack Frost

A car accident transforms serial killer Jack Frost into a mutant snowman, free to enact revenge on the man responsible for his death sentence. This December-set holiday slasher is for the crowd that prefers their horror-comedies to get over-the-top on the goofy mayhem and carnage. Cheesy one-liners are only matched by holiday themed deaths. How do you stop a killer snowman? The solution is just as tongue-in-cheek as the movie. This is for the horror fans that like a big glass of schlock with their holiday cookies.

P2 – Fandango at Home, Peacock, Pluto TV, Prime Video, Roku Channel, Tubi

This horror-thriller will make you think twice about devoting too much of your life to work. Rachel Nichols’s Angela is a corporate workaholic, the last to leave the office on Christmas Eve. That makes it the perfect time for a psychopath to hold her hostage in the parking garage. While the body count may not rise to expected slasher levels, the constant chase sequences more than deliver. This one’s intense, effective, and pretty savage, though that shouldn’t come as any surprise considering it was co-written by Alexandre Aja and directed by Frank Khalfoun (2012’s Maniac).

Santa’s Slay – AMC+, Fandango at Home, Pluto TV, Shudder, Starz, Tubi

Santa's Slay

Once upon a time, in the year 1005 AD, the demon Santa Claus (Bill Goldberg) lost a bet with an Angel. As punishment, Santa was sentenced to become a giver of holiday gifts and cheer for 1,000 years. The moment his sentence ends, however, the demon’s brutal ways resume with a vengeance. As if Goldberg’s casting as the angry Santa wasn’t an indicator, Santa’s Slay is a gory romp uninterested in anything but spreading holiday cheer with riotous carnage and camp. You’ll know if this one is for you from the spirited opening slaughter, featuring Fran Drescher.

Terrifier 3 – Peacock, Pluto TV, Prime Video, Screambox, Tubi

Terrifier 3

This pick is for those who like their holiday horror completely drenched in the red stuff, or with a heaping helping of grimy viciousness. In Damien Leone’s sequel, Sienna and her brother attempt to embrace the Christmas season and put their trauma behind them. That’s precisely when Art the Clown pops back up to spread holiday fear. If that’s not enough gory holiday horror fun, Screambox also offers documentary ART ATTACK! The Dissection of Terrifier 3 and yule log, A Very Special Terrifier Christmas, to round out the festive viewing.

‘Tis the season of Black Friday deals and gift giving, and there is no shortage of novels, nonfiction books, graphic novels, and even cookbooks for the horror fan this year. If you’re unsure where to start or simply looking to add to your reading lists, we’ve compiled a handy guide of holiday must-haves for the horror reader in 2025.

These 20 books are must-haves for the horror fan.

Another by Paul Tremblay

Another

Acclaimed author Paul Tremblay makes his middle school debut with Another, a perfect read for the budding horror fan. It’s a tale of unusual friendship set during COVID, when lonely young Casey finds his world upended by the arrival of a mysterious new friend, Morel. The longer Morel sticks around, the more Casey’s parents seem to favor the strange kid with clay-like skin. Tremblay has a way with creating unease and a chilling atmosphere that creeps up on you, which means that Another‘s style of unsettling eeriness won’t be for easily scared or very young readers. But for brave middle schoolers and horror fans alike, Tremblay’s latest captures the isolation of remote learning with affecting precision without sacrificing the scares.

Athanasia by Daniel Kraus

Athanasia

Whalefall author Daniel Kraus is back with a supernatural graphic novel described as “Watchmen meets Unbreakable.” Written by Kraus, edited by Adrian F. Wassel, illustrated by Dani, colored by Brad Simpson, and lettered by Jim Campbell, Athanasia introduces a popular new drug that’s bubbled up from the rotting corpses of superheroes in a cemetery. A drug that sends the cemetery’s new assistant groundskeeper on an addictive path toward supervillainy. Kraus’s melancholic look at heroism is gritty, brutal, and wholly unique.

The Bewitching by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

The Bewitching

The Mexican Gothic author is back with another macabre tale, this one centered around witches. The Gothic novel follows three perspectives, all hailing from different time periods and each with a distinct connection to witchcraft. It is a multigenerational horror saga that binds its three women to a dark presence, one that unfurls with steady precision and Moreno-Garcia’s detailed prose and worldbuilding. That means The Bewitching dabbles in a few different subgenres in a beguiling vision of Mexican folklore.

The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones

Prolific horror author Stephen Graham Jones follows up his slasher trilogy with a sprawling epic based on the Marias Massacre. Horror and history collide in Jones’ reinvention of vampire lore, with the author putting a Western, American spin on Bram Stoker’s Dracula and its epistolary format. It’s a simmering examination of identity, heritage, guilt, and beyond, though it’s a heady journey paved with blood. Jones once again introduces richly layered characters and fearlessly takes his historical fiction to wild places.

Cold Storage by David Koepp

This 2019 novel is officially the oldest on this list filled with 2025 releases, but a gut-busting adaptation on the way serves as a solid reminder that great novels never go out of style. Two unwitting security guards and a bioterror operative team up to stop a specimen that’s broken out of its containment, threatening a grotesque world-ending event. While that sounds ultra-serious and apocalyptic, Koepp brings mordant humor and breakneck pacing to this propulsive thriller that’s sure to get you stoked for the upcoming feature film.

Elvira’s Cookbook from Hell: Sexy, Spooky Soirées and Celebrations for Every Occasion by Cassandra Peterson

Elvira is bringing the afterlife to the party with a new cookbook that doubles as a party-planning guide. The Mistress of the Dark is divulging her secrets for the ultimate in goth gatherings, gruesome gourmet meals, killer cocktails, terrifying tablescapes, and funereal floral arrangements. It’s as fun as it sounds, with stunning presentation and images, making it a no-brainer gift option for recipe collectors, party hosts, or fans of Elvira.

Event Horizon: Dark Descent by Christian Ward

IDW Publishing’s new comic series from author Christian Ward, artist Tristan Jones, and colorist Pip Martin serves as a prequel to the 1997 sci-fi horror movie. Taking place prior to the film’s 2047 setting, the comic uncovers what really happened to Captain Kilpack and the first Event Horizon crew. Considering the glimpses revealed in the film, expect a grim journey ahead for this ill-fated crew. One that brings new nightmarish denizens with sequel potential.

King Sorrow by Joe Hill

The Black Phone scribe delivers one Faustian urban fantasy epic this year. The premise follows a group of friends as they summon a dragon to do their bidding. The only catch is that it locks them into a pact with the beast, one that demands regular sacrifice lest they become the dragon’s next meal. Despite its hefty page count, King Sorrow is a fast page-turner that shifts perspectives and explores themes of friendship, addiction, and loss as it combines fantasy, horror, and action in thrilling ways. An adaptation of Hill’s contemporary fairy tale may already be in development.

The Lamb by Lucy Rose

The Lamb

A tender, cannibalistic coming-of-age fairy tale about a mother and daughter. Lucy Rose pens a modern Grimm’s fairytale, complete with lush prose and graphic depictions of cannibalism as a newcomer shifts protagonist Margot’s views of Mama’s eating habits. That Rose is unafraid to really drive home the grotesqueries of this twisted family’s diet means that The Lamb and its stomach-churning visions can get repetitive for the squeamish. But for those that like their horror as beautiful as it is gory, The Lamb is a must.

Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses: The Making of a Cult Classic by Rob Zombie

Zombie’s making-of book chronicles the early notes and sketches behind the filmmaker’s feature directorial debut through its premiere, making it a comprehensive must-have for any fan. More than just pairing interviews with personal insights on the film’s creation, Zombie also includes the full shooting script, handwritten notes, rare artwork, concept sketches, and stills. In other words, it’s a stunner of a book that doubles as a gorgeous collectible and a fascinating deep-dive into an early aughts favorite.

Screaming and Conjuring: The Resurrection and Unstoppable Rise of the Modern Horror Movie by Clark Collis

Entertainment journalist and author Clark Collis traces the evolution of modern horror in this definitive 504-page hardcover, featuring behind-the-scenes accounts, untold stories, and in-depth interviews with horror stalwarts. Expect details, anecdotes, and production deep-dives into horror favorites like Scream, 28 Days Later, and  The Conjuring, with insights from luminaries like Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Drag Me to Hell) and SFX artist Greg Nicotero (The Mist, “The Walking Dead”). In other words, it’s a highly detailed and researched love letter to modern horror and its rise in popularity.

Terrifier 3: The Offical Novelization by Tim Waggoner

Available on Kindle now and in paperback and hardcover on December 2, the official novelization for Terrifier 3 arrives just in time to bring the horror to the holidays. The author of the Terrifier 2 novelization is back to unleash another splatterpunk battle between Art the Clown and Sienna as the horror icon gets festive for Christmas. The Terrifier 3 book will follow the franchise storyline that the film’s writer and director Damien Leone brought to audiences last year, a perfectly gruesome complement to the film.

That Very Witch: Fear, Feminism, and the American Witch Film by Payton McCarty-Simas

That Very Witch Book Cover

Witches are in vogue this holiday season, largely thanks to Wicked: For Good. Through historical analysis and dozens of case studies, author Payton McCarty-Simas’ book analyzes how the witch became the ultimate cultural bogeywoman, tracing cinematic portrayals throughout the decades and their cultural impact. McCarty-Simas tracks the cinematic witch across time, with extensive academic research as it engages with the political and societal landscapes that influenced the witch’s representation on screen throughout the decades. It’s not a light read, but it is a comprehensive text that’ll fill your watchlists with more witch horror.

The Toxic Avenger: The Art And Making Of The Movie by Dan Jolin

Holiday guide book - toxic avenger making of

Curious how Macon Blair’s raucous update on The Toxic Avenger came to be? This hardcover book highlights concept designs and production art, alongside insight from the cast, crew, and producers of the new take on Troma’s 1984 cult classic. As if that’s not enough to entice the horror-loving collector, the 160-page tome features an appropriately toxic glow-in-the-dark cover. If that’s still not enough Toxie for you, also look for the film’s official novelization from author Adam Cesare.

The Unworthy: A Novel by Agustina Bazterrica

The Unworthy

The author of Tender is the Flesh is back with a dystopian horror story set at a convent inhabited by a cult. It follows an unnamed female protagonist who hopes to rise in the cult’s ranks, until she meets and falls in love with the newest member. It’s a short read that favors ambiguous storytelling and an emphasis on grotesque imagery, which means this disturbing little read aims to get under your skin rather than offer easy answers. The Unworthy may be light on plotting, but Bazterrica’s prose and the horror it evokes linger.

Victorian Psycho by Virginia Feito

Author Virginia Feito gives a murderous twist to the classic Victorian Christmas horror story. It’s not ghosts that haunt the remote gothic Ensor House when quirky governess Winifred Notty arrives to take up her new position, but Winifred herself. As the young governess assimilates into life at Ensor House, staff members begin to inexplicably disappear, and the owners of the estate begin to wonder if there is something amiss about their new hire. Think American Psycho, but set in 1858. This brisk read doesn’t offer much in the way of surprises, but it’s a fun bloody romp perfect for the holidays. And it has an adaptation starring Maika Monroe on the way.

When the Wolf Comes Home by Nat Cassidy

Nat Cassidy’s ode to ’80s horror brings pulpy, bonkers entertainment. A struggling actress discovers a young runaway hiding outside her apartment. A violent confrontation with the boy’s father sets in motion a harrowing bid for survival. It’s a prolonged chase novel in the vein of Dean Koontz, one with plenty of horror surprises to keep you on your toes. At the center of this grim tale is an examination of father figures and our complicated, shape-shifting relationships with our parents, rendered through an extraordinarily compelling and gory horror story.

Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix

Witchcraft for Wayward Girls book cover

Hendrix’s latest offers the author’s take on witches, but with a far meatier and more mature story grounding it. Here, witchcraft is rarely as scary as the historically based horrors tormenting a handful of terrified teens shunned by society. The 1970-set novel introduces 15-year-old Neva Craven, left scared and confused as her irate father coldly drives her across state lines and unceremoniously deposits her in Florida’s Wellwood House, a strict and controlling place for people like Neva: unwed pregnant teens. Friendship creates a formidable power of its own in this rebellious and bewitching story.

Wake Up and Open Your Eyes by Clay McLeod Chapman

Clay McLeod Chapman’s latest captures the horrors of being terminally online. Reminiscent of The Purge and The Signal, a strange broadcast is driving viewers mad with homicidal rage. Chapman takes it further, experimenting with form and perspectives, including a found footage section. It’s a viscerally violent and bleak vision of a demonic possession epidemic that spreads through the media. It’s as subtle as a sledgehammer with its social commentary, offset by a breakneck, intense pace.

Your Favorite Scary Movie: How the Scream Films Rewrote the Rules of Horror by Ashley Cullins

The definitive gift for the die-hard Scream fan in your life. The 352-page book examines the making and impact of the Scream films, with behind-the-scenes insight from cast and crew; nearly everyone associated with this franchise is interviewed, and Cullins leaves no stone unturned in her exploration of these films. Beyond interviews, the comprehensive book is filled with production details, anecdotes, and scrapped sequel plan reveals. As if that’s not enough, Cullins also injects teases for the upcoming installment with quotes from Neve Campbell and Kevin Williamson. For the non-reader, Ghostface himself, actor Roger L. Jackson, narrates the audiobook.

Funko has been growing their line of POP! Movies toys based on Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3, including a gnarly Victoria toy and an Art the Clown based on the original teaser poster.

The latest Art the Clown toy from Funko brings the gruesome chainsaw scene from Terrifier 3 to your collectibles shelf, putting Art in his Santa suit and arming him with a chainsaw.

This particular toy is a Funko Exclusive, and it’s set for release this holiday season.

Writer-director Damien Leone is currently developing a fourth — and, perhaps, final — installment in the gory franchise. The team is promising a “bat-shit insane” finale for the saga.

Bottleneck Gallery has unveiled a killer clown double feature with new posters for Terrifier 3 by Rhys Cooper and IT by Hugo Richard.

Terrifer 3 is an 18×36 screen print, hand-numbered out of 100, for $60. A 3D lenticular print on 18×36 1mm PET, limited to 85, will also be available for $90.

Bottleneck writes, “Terrifier 3 brought Art the Clown’s antics to deeper, darker, and more depraved places, and Rhys’s print is centered around the simple horror of Art’s design and performance.”

IT is a 24×36 screen print, limited to 100, for $60. An archival pigment on 24×36 4mm acrylic panel, limited to just 15, will also be available for $125.

Bottleneck writes, “Hugo Richard drags the most frightening space-demon-clown to the surface with his newest print for IT. Using the modern look for Pennywise, Hugo’s print sees Georgie, in his iconic getup, ensnared by a terrifically evil Pennywise.”

Both designs go on sale tomorrow, October 22, at 12pm ET.

Elliott Fullam, known for going up against Art the Clown as Jonathan Shaw in Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3, will star in the surreal coming-of-age horror short Wolf in Crown.

He’ll play Steven Brown, a young musician who sees beyond the mortal world. As his beloved Sophia loses grasp on her fading soul, an unknowable evil suffocates reality itself.

Josie Dubree, Fullam’s real-life muse, will co-star in the project, with production set to begin next month.

“I’m really excited to be working with our awesome little team for this exciting project! And I’m really looking forward to working with Josie for this, as I feel like she has something really special to bring to her character,” Fullam tells Bloody Disgusting.

“This short is the beginning of a coming-of-age story between two lost souls who are experiencing the horrors of the world. We’re hoping that people can connect to this story, and we’re starting this out as a very low-budget project that we can build from.”

Several other Terrifier alumni are involved: Terrifier 3 still photographer Jesse Korman is co-directing with Kevin Veselka, while Terrifier 2 and 3‘s Olga Turka will serve as production designer and costume designer.

Described as being in the vein of The Shining, Donnie Darko, and the works of David Lynch, Wolf in Crown is written by Kevin Veselka. It serves as the first segment of a larger story.

“I’d really like to thank everyone who is showing interest in this story,” Fullam adds. “It means a lot to us, and the horror community is such a beautiful group of people that I cherish dearly. I hope we can bring you something that you can really enjoy.”

In addition to acting, Fullam is an accomplished musician whose latest album, Ready to Leave, was released last year. Korman and Veselka helmed his recent music video for “Unnamed,” which stars Dubree.

The world of Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3 (now streaming on SCREAMBOX!) will expand with the official novelization from author Tim Waggoner, Cineverse has announced today.

The upcoming release is part of Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting’s new publishing arm Bloody Press, focused on creating and bringing audiobooks, e-books and print editions to market.

Penned by Tim Waggoner, author of the successful Terrifier 2 novelization, Halloween Kills, and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the Terrifier 3 book will follow the franchise storyline that the film’s writer and director Damien Leone brought to audiences last year.

“We continue to look for new opportunities to reach fans, from novelizations to exclusive t-shirts and collectible merchandise to podcasts,” said Cineverse VP Network Strategy, Tom Owen. “When you can super-serve people who are passionate about iconic horror franchises like Terrifier, it makes it possible not only to drive revenue but to form powerful, lasting connections.”

“It is a thrill to be brought on board to contribute to the world that Damien created and help tell Art and Sienna’s stories in new ways,” said Waggoner. “I can’t wait to share this story with fans.”

Waggoner is a four-time winner of the Bram Stoker Award, a one-time winner of the Scribe Award, and a two-time finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award. He teaches creative writing and composition at Sinclair College in Dayton, Ohio.

The feature films, Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3, are both available for streaming on SCREAMBOX.

Best of all? For a limited time you can get a SCREAMBOX subscription for just $2.99/month for the first three months, so you can watch both Terrifier sequels for just $2.99 now!

It’s Valentine’s Day, and this week brought plenty of new horror movies for you to cuddle up on the couch with. In addition to Terrifier 3 slashing its way into streaming, Scott Derrickson’s latest horror movie is now available at home, and that’s just the beginning of the lineup.

Here’s all the new horror that released February 10 – February 14, 2025!

For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.

What if the horror movie’s audience served as the monster menacing its characters in real-time? The fourth wall won’t protect you from Delicate Arch, now streaming on SCREAMBOX.

Director Matthew Warren shatters reality with his feature debut in which four college kids with fracturing relationships take a camping trip in order to escape an ecological disaster.

Alone in the desert, they begin to suspect that their reality might not be as it seems and soon realize they’re being watched.

William Leon, Kelley Mack (“The Walking Dead”), Kevin Bohleber (V/H/S/Beyond), and Rene Leech star.

Filmed on location in Salt Lake City and Moab, Utah, the SCREAMBOX Exclusive film leveraged the natural beauty of Arches National Park to contrast with the untold horrors that await.

The latest film from Epic Pictures’ specialty horror label DREAD is A Knight’s War, a medieval horror movie that was released onto VOD outlets at home this past Tuesday.

A fearless knight braves a deadly realm to save the Chosen One’s soul. Facing witches, demons, and brutal foes, he discovers her return could ignite chaos and doom humanity.

A Knight’s War is written and directed by Matthew Ninaber (Death Valley, Transference, Extraction Day). Jeremy Ninaber (Transference, Best Friend from Heaven, Forest Fairies), Matthew Ninaber, and Kristen Kaster (Death Valley, If I Should Die) lead the cast.

Of particular note, Matthew Ninaber played the title character in Psycho Goreman!

“A Knight’s War is a testament to what can be achieved with passion, creativity, and an incredible team. This film holds a special place in my heart because of the sheer determination and effort that went into every aspect of its creation,” says director Matt Ninaber. “The grit and love that went into this film are undeniable when you see it on screen.”

Netflix returns to the universe of “The Witcher” with the brand new animated movie The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, wherein humans, monsters and merpeople collide.

The dark animated fantasy is now streaming.

“Geralt of Rivia, a mutated monster hunter, is hired to investigate a series of attacks in a seaside village and finds himself drawn into a centuries-old conflict between humans and merpeople. He must count on friends — old and new — to solve the mystery before the hostilities between the two kingdoms escalate into all-out war.”

Sirens of the Deep takes place between episodes 5 and 6 of “The Witcher” Season 1.

Doug Cockle will be voicing Geralt in the movie. The spinoff film is directed by Kang Hei Chul and written by the series’ writers Mike Ostrowski and Rae Benjamin.

“The Witcher” series stars Anya Chalotra and Joey Batey will also reprise their roles as Yennefer of Vengerberg and Jaskier for the new Netflix animated movie.

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep comes from South Korean animation studio Studio MIR, who was also behind Netflix’s The Legend of Korra and Voltron: Legendary Defender.

“Schitt’s Creek” actress Emily Hampshire shows that a mother’s love never dies in the indie horror film Mom, now available on VOD outlets from Uncork’d Entertainment.

The postpartum horror tale follows a struggling mother who’s abandoned by her family after a horrific incident. As she falls further into isolation, she begins to be haunted by a sinister entity that is determined to make her relive her darkest moments.

Adam O’Brien delves into the darker side of motherhood for his feature directorial debut, written by Philip Kalin-Hajdu (Game of Death).

François Arnaud (“Midnight, Texas”), Christian Convery (Cocaine Bear), Erika Rosenbaum, Mariah Inger (“Transplant”), Tristan D. Lalla (“Ghosts”), and Cat Lemieux round out the cast.

One of last year’s hottest horror movies, Damien Leone’s record-breaking unrated slasher sequel Terrifier 3 is now streaming exclusively on SCREAMBOX!

SCREAMBOX is also now streaming a 10-minute first look at ART ATTACK! The Dissection of Terrifier 3 – a new behind-the-scenes documentary feature offering fans an insider’s look into the making of Terrifier 3, which will debut in full on SCREAMBOX on March 14.

“As the holiday season approaches, they try to embrace the Christmas spirit and leave the horrors of the past behind. But just when they think they’re safe, Art the Clown returns, determined to turn their holiday cheer into a new nightmare. The festive season quickly unravels as Art unleashes his twisted brand of terror, proving that no holiday is safe.”

Produced by Phil Falcone and written and directed by Damien Leone, Terrifier 3 stars David Howard Thornton, Lauren Lavera, Elliott Fullam, Samantha Scaffidi, Antonella Rose, Margaret Anne Florence, Bryce Johnson, Alexa Blair, Mason Mecartea, Krsy Fox, Clint Howard, Jon Abrahams with Chris Jericho, Daniel Roebuck, and Jason Patric.

Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy play elite snipers who fall in love during a top-secret mission in Scott Derrickson’s The Gorge, which debuted only on Apple TV+ today.

In The Gorge, “Two highly-trained operatives (Teller and Taylor-Joy) are appointed to posts in guard towers on opposite sides of a vast and highly classified gorge, protecting the world from an undisclosed, mysterious evil that lurks within. They bond from a distance while trying to stay vigilant in defending against an unseen enemy.

“When the cataclysmic threat to humanity is revealed to them, they must work together in a test of both their physical and mental strength to keep the secret in the gorge before it’s too late.”

Sigourney Weaver also stars in Scott Derrickson’s (Sinister, The Black Phone) latest.

Zach Dean (The Tomorrow War) wrote the script.

A woman ghosted by her charming dating app suitor refuses to let go of their relationship in director Elric Kane’s The Dead Thing, which debuted exclusively on Shudder today.

Blu Hunt (The New Mutants) and Ben Smith-Petersen (Mad Max: Fury Road) star with John Karna (“Scream”), Katherine Hughes (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), and Brennan Mejia (“Power Rangers Dino Charge”).

The indie film marks the solo feature directorial debut of Elric Kane, co-host of Fangoria’s Colors of the Dark podcast, who wrote the script with Webb Wilcoxen.

In the movie, “Alex is trapped in a downward spiral of shallow hookups and tepid connections, but she is caught off guard when her dating app swipes lead her into the arms of a mysterious, charming young man Kyle. Despite their passionate night, when the sun rises, the mystery man is nowhere to be found.

“Alex then sets out to find the one person who made her feel alive. Through her investigation, she reconnects with Kyle, but also digs up a ghastly supernatural secret. The pair quickly descend into a whirlwind of obsession, dependence, lust, and infatuation that has grave consequences. ”

The latest release from Gravitas Ventures, director Matt McClung’s supernatural horror movie Inhabitants is the final new horror movie unleashed onto VOD outlets today.

In Inhabitants, “A young woman moves in with her lapsed Catholic boyfriend, only to discover that they’re being haunted by the vengeful ghost of his childhood youth minister.”

Anna Jacoby-Heron, Josh Andrés Rivera, Ana Auther, and Kevin Nealon star.

Matt McClung wrote the script and also directed Inhabitants.

Fall in love with Art the Clown all over again when Damien Leone‘s record-breaking Terrifier 3 streams on SCREAMBOX February 14!

If you’re not already subscribed to the Bloody Disgusting-powered horror streaming service, this SCREAMBOX Starter Pack highlights ten terrifying titles to tide you over until Terrifier 3.

Project Wolf Hunting

Project Wolf Hunting is a hyper-violent South Korean genre bender that packs action, sci-fi, horror, and thriller aspects into a gory mashup of Con Air, The Raid, and Resident Evil. According to writer-director Kim Hong-Sun, the production went through 2.5 tons of blood — enough to make Art the Clown blush.

The high-octane gorefest is set aboard a cargo ship transporting dangerous convicts who orchestrate an escape attempt against the heavily armed guards. But the fugitives aren’t the most dangerous thing aboard the ship, as below deck there lurks a superhuman killing machine dubbed Alpha.

For more hyper-violence, SCREAMBOX has Blood Feast, Headless, and Adam Chaplin.

Victor Crowley

Before Art the Clown came along, Victor Crowley from the Hatchet franchise was the closest thing modern horror had to a slasher icon in the tradition of Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, and Michael Myers. Writer-director Adam Green delivered over-the-top gore, laughs, and surprises across four movies in which the hulking killer claimed the lives of well over 50 victims — all with gleefully gory practical effects.

The most recent installment, Victor Crowley serves a soft reboot set 10 years after the original massacre. Horror icon Kane Hodder — who played Jason from Friday the 13th Parts VII to Jason X — stars as the titular killer, squaring off against the likes of Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Dave Sheridan (Scary Movie), Brian Quinn (“Impractical Jokers”), Jonah Ray (“Mystery Science Theater 3000”), and Tyler Mane (Michael Myers in Rob Zombie’s Halloween).

For more throwback slashers, SCREAMBOX has We Might Hurt Each Other, The Barn, and #AMFAD: All My Friends Are Dead.

Here for Blood

Wrestlers are no match for Art the Clown — just ask the legendary Chris Jericho, who plays mental institution orderly Burke in Terrifier 2 and 3 — but Here for Blood‘s Tom O’Bannon has the right combination of brawn and brains to put up a fight against forces of evil.

The SCREAMBOX Original horror-comedy is like if John Cena starred in an Evil Dead movie. Shawn Roberts (Resident Evil franchise) stars as a pro wrestler who reluctantly agrees to babysit a 10-year-old when the house is invaded by masked maniacs. Gory practical effects ensue, including a decapitated skull voiced by Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider.

For more gory horror-comedies, SCREAMBOX has Ghost Killers vs Bloody Mary, The Editor, and ThanksKilling.

Frogman

Much like how Art the Clown’s origin is shrouded in mystery, so too is that of Frogman. Based on the local legend of Loveland, Ohio’s amphibious cryptid, director Anthony Cousins puts a Lovecraftian twist on the Blair Witch Project model.

Clocking in at a brisk 77 minutes, the found footage curio follows a trio of friends armed with an old camera in hopes of capturing proof of the elusive Frogman, only to find out that the croaks are no hoax — with a cosmic horror twist.

For more found footage freakouts, SCREAMBOX has The Outwaters, Hell House LLC, and Horror in the High Desert.

Night of the Living Dead

The importance of Night of the Living Dead to horror cinema cannot be overstated. Not only did it single-handedly create the modern zombie as we know it, but George A. Romero laid the groundwork for future independent filmmakers like Damien Leone to make movies on their own terms. Terrifier 3 even features a cameo from frequent Romero collaborator Tom Savini.

In the seminal 1968 film, a ragtag group of strangers barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to ward off flesh-eating corpses that have risen from the dead. A master of mixing horror and social commentary, Romero establishes fellow humans as just as much of a threat as the encroaching plague.

For more zombie mayhem, SCREAMBOX has The Dead Next Door, We Are Zombies, and The Beyond.

Street Trash

If you thought Art the Clown knew how to destroy a bathroom, wait until you see Street Trash. As the tagline says, “If you’ve never seen a melt movie before… be prepared!” In addition to the 1987 splatterfest, SCREAMBOX is the exclusive home of the new standalone sequel directed by Fried Barry‘s Ryan Kruger.

Both versions of Street Trash are depraved cocktails of vibrant practical effects, gritty sleaze, absurd humor, and social commentary. The original is about contaminated alcohol that reduces vagabonds to piles of neon slime on the streets of New York City, while the reboot transplants the madness to South Africa.

For more ’80s cult classics, SCREAMBOX has Sleepaway Camp, Chopping Mall, and The Slumber Party Massacre.

PussyCake

Not only has the Terrifier franchise established an all-time great villain in Art the Clown, but final girl Sienna Shaw — played with aplomb by Lauran LaVera — shows Leone’s penchant for writing strong women. Similarly, Argentinian filmmaker Pablo Parés covers his resolute female characters in copious gore in PussyCake.

The colorful splatterfest follows a struggling all-girl rock band that realizes that being forgotten by their fans is the least of their problems when they encounter ravenous monsters on tour. The result is like Evil Dead 2 meets Predator by way of Josie and the Pussycats.

For more goopy gore, SCREAMBOX has Demons, Brain Damage, and Deep Red.

The Collector

Few killers take greater delight in toying with their victims than Art the Clown, but The Collector could give Art a run for his money. What else would you expect from a slasher/home invasion hybrid that was originally conceived as a Saw prequel detailing Jigsaw’s original story from Saw IV-VII writers Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan?

A heist turns deadly for an ex-con (Josh Stewart, “Criminal Minds”) when he discovers that another criminal has rigged the property with Rube Goldbergian booby traps. Bear traps, fish hooks, razor blades, knives, barbed wire, and cockroaches are deployed in the most sadistic ways imaginable with cringe-inducing special effects by Gary J. Tunnicliffe (Candyman, Scream 4).

For more ruthless barbarity, SCREAMBOX has Audition, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and Found.

Bloody Bites

Art the Clown’s humble beginnings originated in short films — first 2008’s The 9th Circle then 2011’s Terrifier. Presented by Bloody Disgusting, SCREAMBOX’s top-rated Bloody Bites is a compilation of snack-sized frights that aims to spotlight more up-and-coming voices in the genre.

Horror fans will recognize many familiar faces across the 12 seasons, including Amanda Wyss (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Fiona Dourif (“Chucky”), Scout Taylor-Compton (Rob Zombie’s Halloween), Stacey Nelkin (Halloween III: Season of the Witch), and Georgina Campbell (Barbarian).

For more alarming anthologies, SCREAMBOX has Body Bags, Creepypasta, and Cryptids.

Terrifier 2

Not only does Terrifier 3 directly follow the characters and storylines established in its predecessor, but the unprecedented success of Terrifier 2 helped establish Art the Clown as a bona fide horror icon. Word-of-mouth buzz from the likes of Stephen King and Howard Stern to The New York Times and Forbes to “The Talk” and WWE provided a springboard to take the mega-slasher saga to the next level.

SCREAMBOX is also streaming Leone’s insightful Terrifier 2 director commentary.

Will Sienna prevail against Art? What will become of Victoria? Can Leone top Terrifier 2‘s infamous bedroom scene? Find out when Terrifier 3 streams on February 14!

For more killer clowns, SCREAMBOX has Stitches, The Funhouse Massacre, and Gags the Clown.

With significant runs in every major wrestling promotion from ECW to WCW to WWE and now AEW, Chris Jericho has done it all in the wrestling ring — but it wasn’t until his new role in Shudder’s Dark Match that he led a Satanic cult in a series of literal death matches.

I sat down with the reigning ROH World Champion to discuss playing Dark Match‘s evil prophet, the similarities between wrestling and horror, channeling one of Stephen King‘s deadliest villains, and joining the Terrifier franchise.

Dark Match came to Jericho as an offer — the part was his if he wanted it, no audition necessary — but he was apprehensive about doing a movie about wrestling.

“I didn’t want to do wrestling movies. I’ve been wrestling enough. Most wrestling movies aren’t any good,” he admits. “But then I saw that Lowell Dean was the director and writer. I was a fan of his from the Wolf Cop movies, so I thought, ‘Well, let me give it a read.'”

Upon reading the script, he quickly realized Dark Match was more than the typical wrestling-horror mashup. “I just really loved the character, the depths of the story, the twists and turns that it took. Once I kind of took my own head out of my ass, I realized this is pretty fucking cool, and it really is up my alley in every single way.”

In order to embody evil as the mysterious Prophet, Jericho drew inspiration from Randall Flagg from Stephen King’s The Stand.

“When I saw the wardrobe, with the big hat and the Western duster overcoat, it really struck me as The Walkin’ Dude, Randall Flagg, from The Stand. I really liked that relation. I thought there was a real connection there with The Prophet and The Walkin’ Dude, so that’s where I wanted to take it.

“If you know Randall Flagg, he is basically evil personified on Earth. He’s very calm, but he’s also completely batshit crazy when the time comes and will have no problem devouring one of his followers if they don’t bring him the right type of coffee or something, and treating it completely normal. That really helped me lock into what the character was.”

While Jericho was of course never involved in a ritualistic sacrifice, Dark Match reminded him of his early days on the indie wrestling circuit.

“Something I really liked about the movie is how Lowell was able to capture small-time wrestling. For a guy that’s not in the wrestling business, he really nailed it with the van and traveling together through desert roads where there’s no services for 200 kilometers. Sorry, Canadian,” he smiles.

“I’ve been there, I’ve done that. Lowell really fucking nailed the wrestling business, and it’s very hard and rare to do that. The only other time I’ve ever seen that in any wrestling movie was in The Wrestler with Mickey Rourke, where Darren Aronofsky really got that right.”

In addition to appearing on screen, Jericho earned an executive producer credit on the film by lending his expertise to ensure the wrestling aspects of the story were as accurate as possible.

“For me to really want to be involved, I have to believe in the project, and I really believed in this project. Especially since I’ve been in the business for so long, I’m very sensitive to when people don’t understand it but think they do,” he says.

“Lowell really nailed it. I got a real respect for him. He did his research to get it right.”

Sharing intense scenes opposite Steven Ogg as fan-favorite wrestler “Mean” Joe Lean reminded Jericho of his iconic WWE debut.

“I’m a fan of Steven from ‘Walking Dead’ as Negan’s guy, Simon. Obviously I’ve been acting for 34 years in wrestling, but in the movies I’m 10 or 12 in. My very first scene in Dark Match was when the leader comes out on the balcony and Steven is there. I hadn’t even met him yet. Nobody knows what Chris Jericho can do on set, and there’s Stephen Ogg, who I’m a fan of.”

He adds, “It reminded me of my first night at WWE in Chicago, the famous debut. It’s like, ‘You better be good, because this is it. Everyone’s watching you. Alright, Mr. Jericho, you think you’re some kind of hotshot? Prove it!’

“No one said that to me on set, but that’s what I was thinking. Steven Ogg is there. Lowell Dean is there. I better be great on my first take. It was very intimidating, but then after that was out of the way, what a great actor and what a great guy Steven is.

“We had so much fun on that set. It was December in Edmonton. Where we filmed, it was literally in the middle of nowhere, wind blowing, snow everywhere, fucking cold as shit — so it’s good to have some friends on set, and he’s a guy still keep in touch with.”

The pressure helped to elevate Jericho’s performance. “I know this is the real deal. I felt that way when I did the movies with Kevin Smith. It’s like, ‘This is Kevin Smith, man. He’s directed Ben Affleck. He’s directed Val Kilmer. He’s directed George Carlin.'”

He explains, “I think that really does make you a better actor. You’re only as good as the production that you’re in. It’s like a wrestling match. You’re only as good as the person that you’re in the ring with, and the better the people you work with, the better you’re going to be.”

Dark Match is not Jericho’s first foray into a horror, having previously played psychiatric hospital orderly Burke in Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3, the latter coming in a stroke of fate thanks to a certain James Wan production.

“Terrifier 2, the end scene with myself and Leah Voysey, where we’re sitting there in the lobby of the mental institution and there’s a scream, that whole scene was originally about 10 minutes long,” Jericho recalls.

“It involved me and Leah fighting Victoria, and Leah getting her fingers bitten off, and blood in my face, and food being thrown, and an actual choreographed fight where, at the very end, Victoria’s face turns around and it’s Art’s face on the back of her head.

“That was the end of the movie. Leah is done. Victoria is done. Burke is done. We move forward.”

He continues, “The problem was it took such a long time for the movie to be released that Malignant came out in the meantime. Damien [Leone, writer/director] called me saying he’s got to reshoot the ending. I was like, ‘Oh well, cutting room floor for me. At least we tried.’

“He came up with a new idea where Victoria gives birth to Art’s head. Suddenly in Terrifier 3, Burke is back. Victoria is the second lead in the movie. That never would have happened if there was no Malignant.”

Jericho takes pride in his small part in modern horror history. “It was awesome. Very quick part, but it was a great part. What a great experience to be killed with my face viciously ripped off while I’m literally behind the camera watching.

“To be in the number one movie in America, that’s amazing. That’s like having a gold record. I never expected that.”

Despite showing no signs of slowing down in the wrestling ring, Jericho is interested in exploring more acting opportunities in the future.

“I had a really good fiscal year. I filmed two movies for a Hallmark offshoot [Country Hearts and Country Hearts Christmas]. I did the two horror movies, number one movie in America, all the the pomp and circumstance for Dark Match right now, and I got absolutely nothing on the books afterwards. But that’s the acting world,” he acknowledges.

“I’ve been interested in it for years. Over the last few years, I’ve been getting some great parts, and you can’t take anything for granted. Any offer that you get, that is like Manna from Heaven. I will take any offer that I get that has some sort of cool factor to it and some sort of creativity behind it.”

Dark Match certainly fits that description for Jericho. “I really like this film because I’m a horror fan, I’m a wrestling fan, I’m a fan of good movies, so it ticks all those boxes.”

He adds, “It reminds me of ‘The Walking Dead,’ and ‘Walking Dead’ is not really a zombie show; it’s a show about the collapse of society with zombies as a background. This is not a wrestling movie; it’s about people trying to survive a Satanic cult with wrestling as a backdrop.

“If you like wrestling, you’ll like this movie because it respects wrestling. If you like horror, you’ll like this movie because it’s batshit crazy with some great gore, some great kills, a great script, great characters. It really does have all of the things you could want in a movie.”

Dark Match debuts on Shudder on January 31.

Creep I.E. Con is one of Southern California’s biggest horror themed conventions of the year and Bloody Disgusting is slicing right into it! Once again, we’re heading to Ontario, California for a few frightful days filled with spooky shenanigans: 30+ celebrity guests, 170+ vendors, and a series of blockbuster Q & As hosted by the best of BloodyFM.

At the top of the frightful festivities is a 40th anniversary reunion panel for Re-Animator featuring Barbara Crampton, Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Abbott, Brian Yuzna, and Richard Band. In anticipation of the new 4K release, they’ll discuss the legacy of the Stuart Gordon classic with Scare You to Sleep host Shelby Novak and Halloweenies co-host Michael Roffman.

Look to the skies, grab that garlic, and snatch that stereo off the shelf because The Lost Boys will also be reassembling for an exclusive panel, specifically stars Jason Patric, Alex Winter, Billy Wirth, Jamison Newlander, and Chance Michael Corbitt. Scare You to Sleep and Halloweenies will also be moderating. Leather jackets optional.

And that’s just the tip of the blood-dripping icicle! The Boo Crew and Creepy will unwrap more stories behind Terrifier 3 with Alexa Blair Robertson, Mason Mecartea, Antonella Rose, Krsy Fox, and Margaret Anne Florence; Halloweenies and Creepy will return to Woodsboro with Scream stars Roger L. Jackson and Marley Shelton; Scare You to Sleep and Halloweenies will enter the paranormal ring with Vampiro; and The Boo Crew and Creepy will break bread with Alex Armbruster and Karen Cliche to talk Thanksgiving.

To kick off the weekend’s panels, BloodyFM’s own Jon Grilz of Creepy, Pacific Obadiah of SCP Archives, and Shelby Novak of Scare You to Sleep will gather early Saturday afternoon to share timeless urban legends and shed a light on what else may go bump in the night. Join them… if you dare… or, you know, you like good ol’ fashioned oogie boogie content.

Beyond the panels, Creep IE Con 2025 will also host Cassandra Peterson, Tobin Bell, Shawnee Smith, Jon Bernthal, Tom Holland, Ken Foree, Barbara Hershey, Scott Ian, Wednesday 13, and more. It all goes down next weekend — from Friday, January 31st to Sunday, February 2nd — at the Ontario Convention Center in Ontario, California.

After contributing the ending credits track “Dark Dreams” to Terrifier 2 and working on SCREAMBOX’s All My Friends Are Dead, which premiered last summer at Tribeca Film Festival, Slavvy is back with brand new music in Terrifier 3.

The new tracks mark Slavvy’s first release since 2023’s “Pragmatic” EP on Rosso Corsa Records, which featured vocals by Slavvy and production by Slavvy and SIGHOST.

“Title Credits Theme” and “Killer Theme” (listen) are both works that were made predominantly for film accompaniment, and can serve as a glimpse into the growth of Slavvy’s film-centric compositions over the past few years, hypes the press release.

Slavvy has also elected to donate any profits from the tracks to charities servicing the victims of the California Wildfires.

“This is the only meaningful way I can think to give back,” he explained. “So anything these tracks make will go to people who need it, including the royalties I get from having these songs in the film.”

For fans of his film work and previous EPs, Slavvy also announces a brand new EP coming later in 2025, titled Melancholic. Melancholic will consist of 7 tracks, including “Devil In a White Dress” which also appears in the Terrifier 3 BTS Featurette. There is no definitive release date yet.

Terrifier 3 has become a global sensation with everyone from Kanye West to Bones and All and Suspiria (2018) director Luca Guadagnino counting themselves fans of Art the Clown’s antics.

If you want to check out films featuring Slavvy’s music, Terrifier 2 and All My Friends Are Dead are now streaming on SCREAMBOX, and Final Summer is streaming on Tubi and Amazon Prime.

Terrifier 3 comes to SCREAMBOX on February 14th.

Art Attack! The Dissection of Terrifier 3 will feature more of Slavvy’s music and is also coming to SCREAMBOX on March 14th.

“They used three of my songs in the BTS featurette, but the third one is on an upcoming EP,” he adds. “You’ll have to be patient on that one, but it’s ironically one of my favorite songs I’ve made. I’m aiming to have the EP out by summer or fall.”

When it comes to Best Of lists, they’re never very difficult to research and write when centered around the horror genre. Any time I hear people bemoaning the lack of quality present in modern-day horror, I end up more confused than anything else. Ignoring the bevy of quality mainstream horror releases this year, the horror genre has been gifted with a slew of consistently fun and memorable films from every corner of the radar.

From the mainstream to shoestring-budget YouTube movies, 2024 has continued the creative hot streak horror has been on for the better part of the last decade. Supporting said creative endeavors in the hugely profitable and popular genre is an esteemed group of horror mainstays, A-list stars, and aspiring newcomers working to make the stories as memorable as they can while cementing their individual legacies into the world of cinema.

The diversity of the horror genre has never been more apparent than the output seen in 2024. This year, we’ve seen a devious and bloody concoction of body horror, psychological torment, evil crime stories, and the return of everyone’s favorite clown and that isn’t even the tip of the iceberg. Despite the variety, the common thread binding these subgenres is killer performances from a talented cast of actors elevating their respective films to higher degrees.

Which of these performances are the most notable? Read on to find out!

15. David Dastmalchian – Late Night with the Devil

Late Night with the Devil David Dastmalchian - horror movie The Cure

Character actors are the unsung heroes of movies and TV shows, serving as one of the workhorses of the industry for their willingness to showcase their talents in a versatile set of roles. David Dastmalchian is among the most notable character actors of the modern era, carving out his legacy in Hollywood through small, yet memorable roles in films such as The Dark Knight, Ant-Man, Oppenheimer, and Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, Blade Runner 2049, and Dune: Part One. A consistent supporter while rarely leading the cast, one of the few deviations of this pattern being films that he’s written like 2014’s Animals and 2018’s All Creatures Here Below.

The other deviation is this year’s indie horror breakout Late Night with the Devil, a horror film that was partially sold on the concept of Dastmalchian leading a movie again. A great selling point that was backed up by Dastmalchian’s strong work as film protagonist and fading talk show host Jack Delroy. Tasked with adding tragic humanity to a clout-hungry TV host with some seriously grim secrets, Dastmalchian plays Delroy with a curious and melancholic charisma that simultaneously gives him a classic 70s TV actor charm while highlighting the fact that something is definitely…off about the guy.

While Delroy is ultimately not the main antagonist of the film, the ripple effects of his actions are a driving force for the story and Dastmalchian’s compelling performance turns an already-fun and kooky supernatural horror into a darkly comedic character study. In a film populated with a talented lineup of supporting performances, Dastmalchian’s lead work is disarming in the man’s lowkey charm that morphs into a morbid window into entertainment politics.

14. Justice Smith – I Saw the TV Glow

I Saw the TV Glow VOD

After the success of Jane Schoenbrun’s breakout horror hit We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, it set forth the expectations that their next project would serve as a bigger and better creative endeavor. What followed was a similar descent into horror through the glow of a bright screen, this time in the form of nostalgic 90s children’s sitcoms in I Saw the TV Glow. Switching up from YouTube challenges to immersive lore dives into old shows, Schoenbrun’s own experience with discovering their identity bleeds heavily into I Saw the TV Glow and is personified through the work of one Justice Smith.

Smith plays a character who, through the exposure of a fantastical children’s show, begins to question the reality of his identity and who he truly is. A potentially upsetting situation in the real world, the horror that Schoenbrun adds to an internal crisis is propelled by Smith’s devastating performance. Playing the isolated Owen with a dash of charm and innocence, Smith makes his eventual decay as heartbreaking as it is horrifying.

Much of the film’s horror comes from Owen’s confusion clashing with the cold reality of a world indifferent to his entire being. Smith’s performance is shy, quiet, physically tiring, and passive to Owen’s detriment, only bursting when he can’t hold it in anymore. It’s a testament to Smith’s ability to take his timid presence as an actor and frame it through Schoenbrun’s identity horror with stellar results. I Saw the TV Glow is simply made better and legitimately scarier thanks to Smith and the rest of the cast.

13. David Howard Thornton – Terrifier 3

Words alone cannot express how genuinely cool it is to finally have a new slasher icon after what feels like an eternity of the classic slasher fading into obscurity. Horror trends change all the time and the move away from old-school slasher mayhem invading the mainstream was simply a casualty to changing times. So it’s refreshing and badass to see David Howard Thornton’s Art the Clown sidestep the trends of modern horror whilst embracing the current social environment that many people argue is the type of environment that’s designed to see Art the Clown’s penchant of bloody ultraviolence disappear.

The reality is that everyone has that secret hankering of seeing balls-to-the-wall slasher violence and the success of Terrifier 3 is proof. Thornton’s now-iconic turn as the macabre madman in clown makeup drove hordes into theaters and became a box office sensation in the process. And all of that success hinges not just on the wacky and wildly over-the-top violence that Art the Clown revels in, but Art himself. Despite two other movies also having Thornton appear as Art, it wasn’t until 3 where Thornton’s silent comedy stylings finally meshed with the playfully deranged clown.

David Howard Thornton’s Chaplin-esque performance is at its strongest in the third installment, being free to interact with a varied and far more memorable cast of supporting characters that occasionally match his manic energy. Hell, the bar scene on its own is a true window into the series’s massive improvement in matching the tone of the film with Art himself. Art the Clown is just as fun to watch goofing around as he is maiming people beyond recognition and David Howard Thornton’s hilarious, charismatic, and genuinely terrifying performance as Art goes to show the hidden versatility of the world’s most dangerous clown.

12. Jung Yu-mi – Sleep

Sleep 2023 Baby

Imagine being married to and carrying the unborn baby of a sleepwalker who not only walks in the middle of the night, but displays the kind of behavior that may or may not be endangering you in the process. It’s this pitch that director Jason Yu ran with all the way to the completion of his feature length debut film, the South Korean dark comedy horror-thriller Sleep. Yu’s story of a woman and new mother dealing with both her infant baby and her husband’s mysterious nocturnal behavior quietly released digitally in the States to minor fanfare and on the back of the film’s central performance, it’s a damn shame this isn’t being discussed enough.

Jung Yu-mi’s captivating performance as our lead Soojin hits the ground running with dramatic and surprisingly hilarious results. Soojin’s plight with her husband (played by the late Lee Sun-kyun of Parasite fame) begins to physically and mentally burden her, leading her down a path of madness that Yu-mi always manages to make both horrific and entertaining. Watching Soojin “husband-proof” their apartment is a morbid delight that blends seamlessly with the reality of watching a woman fall apart at the seams and Yu-mi’s endlessly entertaining screen presence is a joy to watch even at the mental expense of Soojin.

Though it isn’t until the third act where Yu-mi’s blend of horror and comedic timing comes to a boiling point. I won’t spoil exactly what happens, but Yu-mi’s portrayal of Soojin’s worsening mental state goes into some genuinely unexpected places that are a blast to watch. A curiously placed PowerPoint presentation that is somehow crucial to the plot’s progression sounds like a true “jumping the shark” moment, but Yu-mi’s deliberately confusing performance manages to make it work in spades. It’s something I can say about Sleep as a whole, as it is a solid horror-thriller elevated to another level on the strength of Jung Yu-mi’s work.

11. Margaret Qualley – The Substance

The Substance Sue Stretches In Front Of Elisabeth Portrait

When reviews came pouring in for Coralie Fargeat’s latest project, just about all of them raved and glazed The Substance as one of the year’s craziest movies. It was a sentiment proven right by concept alone, using the cyclical nature of an actor’s shelf life in Hollywood to conjure up grade-A body horror insanity. An exceptional showcase of Fargeat’s brand of feminist horror mixed with a directorial flare inspired by the likes of Cronenberg and Carpenter, The Substance is a cracking slice of cinema on her talents alone.

As important as she is to the success of the film though, it’s the commitment of its cast that puts it over the top. Enter one Margaret Qualley. Playing the artificially created younger copy of Demi Moore’s Elisabeth Sparkle, Qualley is tasked with heightening the arrogant and selfish side of Sparkle’s personality while differentiating herself enough from the original base. A pretty TV persona built on bubbliness quickly morphs into a spoiled brat at home and Qualley excels at the balance, ironically enough.

Qualley’s energy builds and builds to a performance that is equal parts fearless and frenzied, completely giving herself to the film’s disgusting body horror in the third act. Anyone willing to go through the makeup process for these films should be applauded and Qualley’s transformation into the abomination known as Monstro Elisasue is no different. A magnetic performance that awards circuits slotted under the Supporting category, but Margaret Qualley is as much a lead as Demi Moore and is an essential aspect of one of the year’s most acclaimed horror films.

10: David Jonsson – Alien: Romulus

Much has been said about the decision to deepfake the late Ian Holm into the latest xenomorph nightmare in space and I certainly don’t believe it to be a necessary addition to the otherwise solid Romulus. But spending my time bemoaning the inclusion of an uncanny digital face reminiscent of a realistic SpongeBob closeup does nothing but besmirch and taint the great work provided by the living actors in Alien: Romulus. In particular, nobody should be sleeping on David Jonsson.

Joining the ranks of Holm, Lance Henriksen, and Michael Fassbender as one of the androids living in the Alien universe, Jonsson’s work as Andy, adopted brother of protagonist Rain, borrows from the best of the android performances while adding in his own unique touches to the universe. A closed-off being with intense loyalty to his sister, Jonsson squeezes sympathy from the audience right from the get-go, despite the memories of Fassbender’s David still fresh in everyone’s minds.

Jonsson’s fantastic work doesn’t stop with his likability either. Effectively switching gears as his programming alters, Jonsson’s performance becomes a complicated combination of emotionless soldier and loyal ally that he sells with ease. And as much as nostalgia bait makes me cringe, his recreation of Ripley’s most iconic line was a gargantuan task that he pulls off with fiery gusto. Whatever the future holds for the Alien franchise, I hope there’s room for David Jonsson in it.

9: Laurie Pavy – MadS

The one-shot in films and shows has occasionally felt like too much of a gimmick in the modern era. Coordinating seamless and sweeping camera movement and blocking are sound technical achievements, but if they don’t serve the story or vice versa, then what’s the point? Director David Moreau avoids this pitfall with his single-take zombie film MadS, depicting a trio of paranoid and toxic friends experiencing a bad trip with a growing zombie outbreak. Seeing just how fast shit hits the fan is the kind of visceral terror you only see in films like Train to Busan and 28 Days Later.

While the main trio of the film are wonderful across-the-board, MadS kicks into high gear with the shift to Anais’s point of view. Anais, the girlfriend of leading man Romain, is played by Laurie Pavy and is one of the three perspectives we’re shown throughout the film. While Romain’s journey is a paranoid drug trip gone horribly wrong, Anais is a far more tragic tale of a woman stuck in a hopeless situation and Pavy’s hypnotic performance as the loopy and eventually feral woman is a sight to behold.

The one-take allure of MadS is practically one-and-one with Pavy undergoing a zombie transformation in real time. We often only get glimpses of a person’s decay into a flesh-muncher, but Anais withering away in front of our eyes is made all the more gut-wrenching by her seemingly denying the reality of her situation. Even when mostly gone, shades of her former self peek out thanks to Pavy’s expertly crafted acting, constantly switching between scared woman and twitchy zombie-in-progress. If there’s any one reason to watch MadS, it’s the frightening work Laurie Pavy puts into her craft.

8: Curry Barker – Milk & Serial

When exactly is the breaking point of content brain? How long can you keep the bit going before it starts to bleed over into reality? Filmmaker and YouTuber Curry Barker attempts to answer such a post-YouTube question with his 3-figure budget found footage horror-comedy Milk & Serial. Starring Barker himself, the unlikely YouTube hit puts content brain and shameless prank videos under a grainy microscope when a couple of prank YouTubers end up going too far during a series of prank-offs between the two.

It’s a short, but impactful trip through one man’s mind and the deterioration accelerated by a combination of YouTube brain rot and an abundance of skeletons in his closet. Said man is played by the filmmaker himself as Curry Barker is front and center of the film and the marketing. The writing, directing, producing and perhaps most strikingly, the unnerving cover star that is but a taste of Barker’s unhinged performance that showcases so much in a mere hour.

Barker’s unsettling work bleeds through in every facet of his acting. The disturbing smile he flashes the camera while talking to the audience, the slimy way he manipulates his friends, the way he can barely hide who he truly is to them and us watching. Barker feels like the personification of the uncanny valley every second he’s onscreen and when he’s playing a heightened version of your average content farm YouTuber, it’s concerningly appropriate and fitting. Easily one of the ickiest performances of the year, horror and beyond.

7: Nell Tiger Free – The First Omen

Nell Tiger Free as Margaret - The First Omen review

I feel as though horror audiences (including myself) were genuinely sideswiped by the surprisingly high critical reception to The First Omen. A horror prequel that seemingly nobody asked for was surely a recipe for disaster. What more can you squeeze out of a franchise and through the shameless formula of needless origin story nonsense. Yet here we are at the end of the year glazing The First Omen as an effective possession horror and a spectacular vehicle for Nell Tiger Free.

Serving as a novice nun in the same orphanage where infamous demon child Damien’s mother resides, Free’s Margaret starts off as a promising and kindhearted nun struggling to adapt to a new setting, Needing a push just to let loose and party for a night, Free portrays Margaret as a sheltered soul walking headfirst into a turmoil she can’t even begin to understand as things get progressively worse. And boy do we feel every crushing instance of Margaret’s physical and mental crisis thanks to Nell Tiger Free’s completely hopeless and fearless performance.

Even before the bonkers final act, seeing Free devolve further into fear for both herself and the girl she vows to protect is more frightening than the usual possession tropes present in the film. She sells the hopelessness of fighting an uphill battle against an entire organization and that is before the third act sees her and her physical body become entwined into the demonic conspiracy. Of course, most people will point to the car crash scene as Tiger Free’s acting reel moment (which it definitely is), but her work in the film as a whole is a magnificent exercise in misery and paranoia.

6: Hugh Grant – Heretic

Heretic Review - Hugh Grant

It’s baffling to me that anyone who is only familiar with Hugh Grant’s work post-2012 may not truly realize how insane it is for him to be front and center of an outright horror-thriller. He has worked in the genre before, but anybody who grew up on films in the 2000s likely remembers Grant as the go-to charming comedy actor relying on his wit and good looks to engage audiences. It wasn’t until the 2010s and onward when Grant gradually shifted towards more character actor roles and his starring role in Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’s religious horror film Heretic is only the latest example of his versatility

Playing a seemingly polite Englishman set out to test the faith of two Mormon missionaries through conversation, debate, and a pair of mysterious doors, we see Hugh Grant using his latent charm and warm attitude to disarm the girls in a further instance of the man shedding his previous reputation. The Bridget Jones alum uses the same familiar cadence in his voice and line delivery as he casually tells the girls that they’re locked in his labyrinth-like home to terrifying effect. What’s worse than a callous sociopath that feels at peace with himself even in the face of scared girls begging to be let go? Hugh Grant utilizes everyone’s perception of him in-universe and reality to get his way and he steals the entire show as a result.

Much of his strongest work in the film is him slowly unveiling his intentions to the girls while rigidly, but calmly forcing them to confront their beliefs and the religion they’re attached to. A debate he often starts with innocuous questions related to fast food and board games too. Grant is a blast to watch as he constantly flips the switch on the girls and even as the film becomes more overtly horror over the runtime, he never once feels out of place in a film that simply wouldn’t be the same without his charmingly sardonic performance.

5: Alisha Weir – Abigail

Radio Silence’s follow-up to their hit horror-comedy Ready or Not and Scream 5 and 6 is something that plays to the strengths of a film collective that knows a thing or two about delivering laughs with the blood and guts. Abigail follows closely in the footsteps of Ready or Not by sticking our main cast of characters in a lavish mansion serving as their potential tomb. While Ready or Not’s central performance was Samara Weaving’s badass heroine in a bride’s dress, Abigail flips it around with the central performance of Alisha Weir’s villainous ballerina vampire.

It’s truly unfortunate just how hard the marketing went on Weir’s transformation from would-be kidnapping victim to bloodthirsty vampire cutting rugs and biting necks. Part of the fun is watching Weir play the part of scared little girl in an effort to throw off her captors/lunch menu and even then, it’s obvious there’s something fishy afoot. Abigail’s mocking apology to Melissa Barrera’s Joey for what’s going to happen to them is just sinister enough to cast suspicion on her without revealing outright what that actually means.

Then the vampire shenanigans begin and Alisha Weir is fully unleashed, both in her dropping the facade and amping up her wild and feral side. Learning ballet for the role, the young musical theater actress incorporates the grace of a ballerina to clash with the various instances of her biting, jumping, and stabbing her poor victims to sadistic glee. To go from the lead role in a Matilda adaptation to the lead in a horror film where she dances a nice waltz with a headless body is crazy whiplash on its own, but something that Alisha Weir somehow makes look easy.

“What color are MY eyes, Frank?”

4: Maika Monroe – Longlegs

When the promotion for Osgood Perkins’s newest horror film Longlegs officially began, audiences were immediately captivated by the cryptic marketing and downright evil atmosphere that permeated from every teaser. Depicting Nicolas Cage as a frizzy-haired killer who always sounds like he’s on the verge of either crying or yelling is an immensely smart use of his sensibilities as an actor and it’s fair to say that the marketing is wholly made by him, combined with a great performance in the final product as well.

But I think we’re all kidding ourselves if we can’t see that Maika Monroe is the real star of Longlegs. In-between the Fincher-esque atmosphere and the crazed Cage performance, our lead is reserved and possibly clairvoyant FBI agent Lee Harker. A stark contrast to Cage’s far more bombastic performance, Monroe also plays to her own strengths and delivers a similarly subtle and meticulous masterclass in acting not unlike her performance in the 2022 horror-thriller Watcher. The power in Monroe’s performance is in the subtleties of her facial expressions and body language.

Always looking off as if staring at something we can never see, Monroe displays the kind of reserved cynicism one typically needs to handle a high-stress job like Harker’s. But she always reminds us of her hidden humanity in her interactions with kids and her co-workers and it’s the kind of weathered quirkiness that makes her such an engaging presence to watch in a film where Cage chews the scenery any chance he gets. It’s equally fun watching her attempt to talk to a child as it is watching her decipher a criminal’s location just by sensing it Dragonball Z-style.

Maika Monroe may not get the showy performance recognition that Cage is receiving, but her silence in Longlegs makes her role her most expressive performance to date and the best from the film itself.

3: Hunter Schafer – Cuckoo

Cuckoo

Horror can be as physically demanding of a genre as action and thrillers, thanks in large to the wide variety of films and shows under the horror umbrella. Actors need to sell like they’ve just made a narrow escape from a seemingly inescapable hellworld and that’s exactly how Hunter Schafer looked at the end of Cuckoo. A pulpy thrill ride from the director of Luz, Cuckoo borrows from the well of Eurocentric horror, complete with a story set in a small resort town located in the Bavarian Alps.

In that town is melancholic rocker Gretchen, played by Schafer, becoming entangled in an unusual family conspiracy that may or may not involve a strange humanoid woman. And that’s all we need for set-up before we bear witness to almost 2 hours of Schafer getting chased, run off the road, beaten up, you name it. Just about everything and everyone is against her in some way, all the while the mental toll of her mother’s death is weighing heavy on her mind and increasingly bandaged head.

It’s an honest joy seeing the Euphoria actress embrace her inner John McClane in such a maddening horror film, regularly having to get out of situations through clever thinking, luck, and inhuman endurance. Some may not find that believable with a teenage girl like Gretchen, but Schafer communicates the rush of adrenaline one can feel in a life-or-death situation to a tee while understanding the weird vibes of the film. Even when the film begins to flirt with creature feature tropes, Hunter Schafer grounds the story through her determination to live, her ability to absorb insane levels of pain and punishment, and a realistic teenager sass towards the unusual adults in the town. Schafer’s performance is frantic, scrappy, lived in and an undeniable highlight in this year of indescribable horrors.

“That’s a fucking weird way to put it!”

2: Juliette Gariépy – Red Rooms

Red Rooms - Fantasia Second Wave

Each time I’ve done this year-end list for horror performances, I always have an internal debate on what exactly qualifies as something under the horror umbrella. The genre’s sheer expansive library and hybrids with other genres can stir up discourse on what is considered horror or thriller. It’s a surprisingly touchy subject, but I believe the answer is in examining how a film or show tackles transgressive topics and what the filmmaker intends the audience to feel. It’s why I ultimately feel confident in Juliette Gariépy’s unhinged beauty of a performance in Red Rooms fitting this list like a glove.

Telling the story of a woman dangerously obsessed with an alleged serial killer on trial for the murders of young girls, Red Rooms feels procedural on the surface with many scenes set in cold and static courtrooms and a lavish apartment. But Juliette’s level of obsession morphs this morbid psychological thriller into an outright evil and disturbed film right out of your worst nightmares. Gariépy’s Kelly-Anne camps outside of the courthouse just to see him while her gambling habit leads her into a section of the dark web that further fulfills her desire to see the forbidden snuff films he’s made of his victims in the “Red Room.”

Kelly-Anne goes beyond mere fangirling and fully relies on the sensation of the trials just to feel something in her life. It’s this surgical method of looking at a case of a possible child murderer where Gariépy’s alien and inhumane performance truly stands out. She is as calm as an undisturbed pond when reading the gruesome details behind the case, with one scene in particular of her watching a teenage girl brutally slaughtered as though she’s watching an NFL replay displaying the lack of humanity or empathy she feels towards anything at all.

It feels like a genuine nightmare watching the otherwise beautiful face of Gariépy’s Kelly-Anne (a successful model in-universe) coated in the red glare of her computer screen while watching a child’s life end. All the more frightening by her lack of reaction. Yet that doesn’t even compare to the lows she’s willing to go towards in a scene in the courtroom involving fake braces and if you watch this scene and not think that Juliette Gariépy’s performance is arguably the scariest of the entire year, I don’t know what to tell you. It is a brilliant, deeply uncomfortable, and downright freaky performance that can and will be talked about in best-of conversations over the years.

1: Demi Moore – The Substance

Margaret Qualley is one-half of the equation that makes The Substance work as well as it does. But it’s the original that pulls everything together. For all the heightened satire present in Fargeat’s horror-comedy, the peak of the film lies within the deliberately less campy core of its leading star. Elisabeth Sparkle’s career as an Oscar-winning actress-turned fitness TV star pairs a little too well with Demi Moore, an extremely successful actress of the 90s making her monster comeback (literally!) in a film about an industry she knows far too well.

Beyond the meta aspect of casting Moore in this role, it’s rare to see an actress of her caliber give herself so completely into an unhinged horror vision that is only a mere misstep away from turning into a laughable farce. A woman creating a younger copy of herself that leads to a dynamic of one of them literally feeding off the other? It’s a balls-to-the-wall concept and yet Moore’s Sparkle tumbling down the path of obscurity and desirability is an appropriate and realistic fear for a woman in an industry so laser-focused on age and beauty.

Yet when she takes the substance and lives it up as Qualley’s Sue during her week of activity, Moore channels the very real sensation of feeling worthless in your body in the midst of a midlife crisis. Like nothing you do truly matters, so might as well let yourself go. Much of the first half of the film is watching Moore trapped in her bubble of self-hatred and every second of it feels like an eternity in the best way. She’s melancholic, isolated, and too tired to even put up a fake smile in public most of the time, demonstrating Moore’s ability to portray a woman silently suffering.

However, her steep decline as Sue feeds off of her body is where Moore’s performance enters the point of no return. Morphing from sadness to jealousy and anger, her work is suddenly completely in-tune with the world Fargeat has created and it is marvelous. A delightfully unhinged Demi Moore is the stuff dreams are made of and combined with the insane makeup work she goes under, it makes for a wonderful disaster of epic proportions. Demi Moore’s performance is bonkers, hilarious, tragic, and completely deserving of its recognition as one of the best horror performances of the decade, period.

“I’m fine. Everything’s fine.”

One of the most fun aspects of horror is the endless creativity when it comes to on-screen carnage, and 2024 has delivered no shortage of memorable horror movie kills.

It’s been a fantastic showcase for special makeup effects artists when it comes to on-screen slaughter; 2024 provided multiple extended kills that cumulatively threatened to wipe out a warehouse supply of fake blood. And that’s why we’re looking back and paying tribute to some of the nastiest, goriest, and most unforgettable 2024 horror movie kills.

We’re saluting the ten best kills in 2024 horror movies, which means massive spoilers ahead for the following: Longlegs, MaXXXine, Sting, Alien: Romulus, The Coffee Table, Abigail, Smile 2, The Substance, Terrifier 3, and In a Violent Nature.

You’ve been warned…

Longlegs – Facial Reconstruction

Longlegs

Filmmaker Oz Perkins refreshingly keeps his curious serial killer, Longlegs, as enigmatic and elusive as possible, giving only glimpses into the killer’s machinations and treating him more as a peculiar boogeyman. It makes the short bursts of Nicolas Cage’s eerie freakouts all the more impactful and unnerving, developing palpable anticipation by the time the serial killer finally meets FBI agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) face to face. That’s when Perkins pulls the rug out from both Harker and the audience with the abrupt, visceral self-demise of the film’s seeming Big Bad. Longlegs bashes his face against the desk, splattering Harker with his viscera. It’s not just the nonchalance of the self-harm that shocks, but the realization that Longlegs was never the true villain of this story but a mere pawn of the devil.

MaXXXine – John Labat’s Car Troubles

Kevin Bacon in MaXXXine

Kevin Bacon’s John Labat seems like the type of sleazy private eye that revels in trouble from the moment he pops up in Ti West’s trilogy ender. At the very least, Labat makes it clear that his morals are skewed, and he doesn’t take no for an answer. He’s more than happy to employ intimidation tactics. It’s too bad he doesn’t realize until far too late that Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) isn’t your average aspiring starlet at all. When Labat pushes Maxine too far, she enlists her adult film industry agent for a quick resolution in the form of a beat down, followed by a brutal evisceration of his body and the evidence with a live junkyard car compression.

Sting – Maria’s Ruthless Spider Attack

Sting

In a year with two spider horror movies, Sting doles out the most savage death. The venomous alien spider, still in a relatively small form, escapes his makeshift cage and into the apartment building to dispatch the residents one by one. The worst punishment is saved for Maria (Silvia Colloca), a depressed woman mournfully looking at a family photo; Sting launches at her face, biting down on a cheek and causing a nasty fall in the process. The alien venom acts fast; Maria gets violently sick, which in turn causes her head to crash into the bathtub’s ledge with a sickening crunch. This kill would still qualify if it ended here, but then Sting decides to crawl into her mouth and cut open her belly from the inside. It’s an elaborate death for a character we’ve barely met, one who’s clearly going through a rough patch. It makes for one of the cruelest kills of the year.

Alien: Romulus – Mother and Offspring

Alien Romulus

In a film where characters are brutally dispatched via acid, tail impalement, or even the tried-and-true chest burst, it’s poor Kay (Isabela Merced) who suffers worst of all. After being rescued from a vicious xenomorph attack, a badly injured Kay opts to take the experimental Prometheus serum, hoping to save herself and her unborn baby. Instead, the serum alters her DNA and causes her to birth the Offspring. The eerie humanoid creature winds up feeding on his own mother, finally putting an end to her horror and suffering. That Kay is portrayed as one of the most innocent among the group only makes this extended kill all the more heartbreaking.

The Coffee Table – The Freak Accident

The Coffee Table 2024 horror movie kills

The inciting event of The Coffee Table gets this pitch-black horror-comedy off to a shocking start, and the suspense only ramps up from there. Despite promises for an unbreakable glass coffee table, that’s exactly what happens within the first act, sending a father spiraling after accidentally decapitating his newborn baby while his wife is out. Director Caye Casas toes the perfect balance when it comes to framing this taboo-shattering death; it’s not explicit, yet still harrowing and intense. Quick images combined with effective sound design leave the viewer just as shaken as Dad.

Abigail – A Villain Explodes

Abigail Frank 2024 horror movie kills

Never trust a double-crosser. Frank (Dan Stevens) is the precise type of crook you can’t trust, and the former cop turned criminal evolves from self-appointed group leader to the de facto villain when granted vampiric power. Frank turns on the remaining survivors, eager to slurp up every bit of their lifeblood, setting up one ultra-satisfying showdown. His demise brings catharsis, relief, and triumph for Abigail (Alisha Weir) and Joey (Melissa Barrera) by unleashing an insane torrent of blood; Frank bursts like a giant vampire water balloon, leaving no surface uncovered in blood. Vampire deaths tend to be messy, more often than not, but Abigail stakes a claim for the messiest thanks to the copious amount of blood employed for this death.

Smile 2 – Lewis Lifts Weights

Smile 2 Lukas Gage giving the creepy smile

Drug dealer Lewis Fregoli (Lukas Gage) found himself an unwitting recipient of the curse simply for being at the wrong place at the very worst possible time. When it was his turn to pass the curse, director Parker Finn ensured his brutal death would up the ante from the first film. A fully possessed Lewis freaks out on a confused Skye Riley (Naomi Scott), seizes, then violently smashes his face in with a barbell plate. Finn focuses on the carnage, with the sound design working just as hard as the visuals to sell the nausea-inducing bodily harm. While Lewis’s death is far from the only nasty kill feature in this sequel, the brutality sets the tone straight away that Finn’s sequel will be bigger, nastier, and much more ruthless.

The Substance – Monstro Elisasue’s Final Bow

The Substance

It’s not just the sheer level of prosthetics and makeup effects required that earns The Substance a spot on this list; it’s the drawn-out sequence dedicated to the protracted, gory, and tragically funny demise of Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) and Sue (Margaret Qualley). Or, more accurately, the prolonged dissolution of Monstro Elisasue. After murdering Elisabeth out of rage, Sue attempts to reuse the leftover activator to stave off her rapid deterioration, creating the fleshy, deformed Monstro Elisasue. It sets the stage for the final bow, literally, with the monstrous entity transforming a live New Year’s Eve broadcast into a bloodbath. It culminates, somehow, in even more bloodshed as Monstro Elisasue explodes into a puddle of viscera and goo. It’s the type of over-the-top finale that goes hard and, more impressively, takes its time to splatter as much blood as possible getting there. It’s the type of no-holds-barred climax that doesn’t come around very often. Yet it’s not without emotional impact, either; Monstro Elisasue is far more accepting of herself than Elisabeth was.

Terrifier 3 – Doomed Shower

Terrifier 3 - 2024 horror movie kills

It’s likely safe to assume that as long as there’s a year with a Terrifier movie released, Art the Clown’s shenanigans will wind up on a Best Kills list with multiple worthy moments for consideration. Terrifier 3 certainly offers up a few choice kills for this list, from a surprise mall explosion to medieval torture by rats. But it’s director Damien Leone’s gender-reversed callback to his iconic Terrifier kill that stands above the bloody pack. On his way to Jonathan (Elliot Fullam) at the university, Art (David Howard Thornton) makes a pit stop at the dorm shower for some Christmas carnage. This centerpiece moment delivers an extended dismembering for the unlucky couple discovered getting frisky in the shower. Art makes sure to give the most attention to Cole (Mason Mecartea), who gets arguably the most graphic death of the film; no anatomy is spared during Art’s deranged bisection via chainsaw.

In a Violent Nature – Yoga Pretzel

In a Violent Nature slasher kill

It’s difficult to imagine anything toppling a Terrifier film from the top spot in the Best Kill list, and yet the experimental slasher In a Violent Nature clinched it with a creative demise best summed up with two words: Yoga. Pretzel. This centerpiece kill sees undead Johnny come upon Aurora (Charlotte Creaghan) as she’s practicing yoga cliffside. He disembowels her with a rusty hook, then pulls her head back and through the gaping hole in her torso, contorting her body into a gruesome pretzel. It’s a lively death that stands out, especially in the context of this quiet arthouse slasher, but it’s all the more impressive considering how this elaborate, ambitious sequence took months to pull together. A challenging production couldn’t hold back undead Johnny or the incredible SFX team, and the result is the most memorable movie kill of the year.
