We have learned the very sad news this week that filmmaker Jeremiah Kipp, who just recently directed this year’s video game adaptation The Mortuary Assistant, has passed away.

The Long Island International Film Expo reports, “According to Lindsay Katt, his life partner of seven years, filmmaker Jeremiah Kipp has left this plane of existence on Tuesday, October 13.”

“Jeremiah was a gentle soul who was always generous with advice and sharing his knowledge of cinema, and he leaves behind many friends and an important legacy of works,” the Long Island Film Expo team writes on Facebook. “The independent film community has suffered a tremendous loss. We’re all in shock, and this reminds us that you never know what people are going through, and perhaps, we should all be a bit kinder to each other, and especially ourselves.”

Prior to The Mortuary Assistant, which adapted the Dread XP video game of the same title, Jeremiah Kipp had directed Shudder’s horror movie Slapface, an expansion of his own short film. Kipp also directed the horror movie The Geechee Witch: A Boo Hag Story a couple years back, and his next movie Faceless had just wrapped production earlier this year.

According to IMDb, Jeremiah Kipp had actively been in pre-production on still another new horror movie titled The Housewife. That movie was set to adapt Kipp’s own 2023 short film.

Kipp leaves behind countless short films including The Safety Games, Don’t Pick Up, Dark Roads, Sins, Siren, Fizzle, Hotline, Unvoiced, Pickup, Progeny, The Pod, and The Christmas Party.

All of us here on Bloody Disgusting send our condolences to Kipp’s family, friends, and fans.

At one point or another, nearly every culture on earth believed in malevolent entities that interfered with human affairs. While it’s more likely that this is due to our species’ universal fear of the unknown than the possibility that we share the earth with supernatural monsters, there’s a reason why so many horror movies base their scares on good old-fashioned demons.

Of course, coming up with visual depictions of otherworldly horror is no easy task, and that’s why I’ve decided to highlight six of the scariest demon designs in horror. After all, a creature feature is only as good as its antagonist, so this is one situation where the uglier the better!

For the purposes of this list, we’ll only be including movie monsters that are explicitly described as being demons from an established religion/folkloric tradition. We’re also only considering the demons’ scare factor – not the overall quality of the movie it came from. That being said, don’t forget to comment below with your own demonic favorites if you think we missed a particularly freaky one.

One more thing – while we won’t be including it on the list since it technically never made it into the movie, I’d also like to give a shout-out to Valak’s tragically unused true form from The Conjuring 2.

With that out of the way, onto the list:

6. Violator – Spawn (1997)

Spawn Violator

I’ve already written about how this ’90s Blockbuster Bomb is nowhere near as bad as most people say it is, but I’ll never get tired of insisting that John Leguizamo’s Clown/Violator is one of the greatest movie monsters of the ’90s. Not only was this ambitious union of digital and practical effects remarkable for its time, but it’s a genuine miracle that the crew was able to faithfully translate Todd McFarlane’s exaggerated design to the big screen.

While the comic book version of this hellish shapeshifter was already frightening, and I’d argue that the soft-spoken telepath of the HBO adaptation is even scarier, the special effects here really make it feel like Violator is about to leap off the screen and gobble up your entire family.

It’s just too bad that the rest of the film isn’t equally impressive!

5. The Demons – Hellboy (2019)

The 2019 Hellboy reboot may not be a good movie, and it left an especially sour taste in fans’ mouths after the cancellation of Guillermo Del Toro’s final entry in his proposed trilogy, but there’s still plenty of stuff that this ill-advised adaptation gets right. Among this R-rated romp’s good ideas, I’d argue that the film’s demonic antagonists are at the top of the list, especially if you suffer from some form of megalophobia.

While the film only briefly unleashes an assortment of hellish monsters upon the world during the final act, the Eldritch designs and Neil Marshall’s expert direction make these some of the scariest scenes in the entire Hellboy franchise. To be honest, I’d like to see an entire movie about kaiju-sized fallen angels wreaking havoc on modern society.

4. Satan – End of Days (1999)

End of Days

End of Days is a deeply strange movie. A supernatural action-horror thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as he attempts to thwart the biblical apocalypse, there are moments here that feel like they came out of a parody. Yet, it’s precisely these idiosyncrasies that make the movie so much fun, especially when the filmmakers do their best to make Lucifer himself a formidable opponent for the man who took down both the Predator and the T-1000.

If you ask me, special effects maestro Mark ‘Crash’ McCreery knocked it out of the park with his surreal and undeniably Eldritch design for Satan. Hell, this winged monstrosity appears to have more in common with Cthulhu than anything you’d see in your average exorcism flick, which makes it all the more tragic that the finished film ultimately replaced most of the demon’s practical effects with CGI.

3. The Lipstick-Face Demon – Insidious (2009)

insidious out of the further

There’s no discussing iconic demon designs without bringing up one of the most popular supernatural antagonists of the past few decades, the Red Face Demon from Insidious. Also known as the Lipstick-Face Demon and The Man with Fire in His Face, he may have only been the main antagonist of that first Insidious film, but this memorable villain has since become the mascot of the entire series as well as proof that familiar iconography can still be scary if presented properly.

That being said, it’s Joseph Bishara’s consistently freaky performance that makes Red Face such a haunting character, with his exaggerated movements and facial expressions helping to bring the design to life. Of course, I’m of the opinion that the demon’s affinity for Tiny Tim songs might just be the scariest thing about him!

2. The Mimic – The Mortuary Assistant (2026)

The live-action adaptation of Brian Clarke’s The Mortuary Assistant may not be quite as scary as its source material, but you’ve got to hand it to the filmmakers for recreating the game’s paranormal antagonists so faithfully – especially since they weren’t exactly working with a Hollywood budget.

Sure, the team benefited from the fact that the most popular of these demonic entities, the grinning Mimic, boasts a relatively simple design consisting of a pale, emaciated body and a doll-like face with uncanny proportions. But I love how they added a corpse-like texture to its skin. Mark Steger’s eerie performance also enhances the effects work and helps to make this one of the most memorable monsters on the list.

My only real gripe with this design is that they gave the Mimic a nose, removing some of the charm of that original design.

1. Porcelain Jesus – Belzebuth (2017)

Emilio Portes’ Belzebuth is a criminally underrated religious horror flick, so it stands to reason that it also features one of the scariest demons on this list. I know I’m technically bending the rules here, as the creature that appears in the film isn’t really the demon itself but a statue that was possessed and corrupted by it, but I believe this blasphemous design speaks for itself.

Over the course of the film, the demonic antagonist possesses a series of unfortunate victims before eventually settling on a porcelain recreation of Jesus, with the ensuing monstrosity chasing our lead characters during the flick’s scariest sequence. As with any piece of religious horror, your fright-mileage may vary depending on your respect for holy iconography, but I’m of the opinion that this design is scary enough to transcend religious barriers.

This week already saw the release of nine new horror movies on Tuesday, March 24, and another SIX of them have now been released in theaters and at home to kick off the weekend.

Here’s all the new horror that released on Friday, March 27, 2026!

Zazie Beetz Patricia Arquette

A New York City high-rise serves as a temple to Satan, and new maid Zazie Beetz is its latest human sacrifice in They Will Kill You. The film is now playing in theaters nationwide.

Zazie Beetz stars as a young woman who must survive the night at the Virgil, a demonic cult’s mysterious and twisted death-trap of a lair, before becoming their next offering.

Myha’La, Paterson Joseph, Tom Felton, Heather Graham, and Patricia Arquette round out the cast of They Will Kill You. Get your tickets now and watch the trailer below.

Kirill Sokolov (Why Don’t You Just Die!) directs from a script he co-wrote with Alex Litvak (Predators). IT filmmaker Andy Muschietti produces alongside Barbara Muschietti.

Produced by Diablo Cody, director Meredith Alloway’s Forbidden Fruits brings a new coven of witches to the big screen. The film is now playing exclusively in theaters.

Lola Tung (“The Summer I Turned Pretty”), Victoria Pedretti (“The Haunting of Hill House”), Alexandra Shipp (Tragedy Girls), Gabrielle Union (Breaking In), and Emma Chamberlain star in Forbidden Fruits, being released by IFC and Shudder.

Free Eden employee Apple secretly runs a witchy femme cult in the basement of the mall store after hours. But when new hire Pumpkin challenges the group’s ‘girl boss’ ways, the women are forced to face their own poisons or succumb to a bloody fate.

“Forbidden Fruits grabbed me by the neck the very first time I read it,” Diablo Cody said. “It’s one of the craziest, most creative, beautifully bonkers projects I’ve ever worked on.”

Meagan Navarro writes in her review for Bloody Disgusting, “Forbidden Fruits may not necessarily forge new terrain in the teen satire space, but Alloway brings so much style and energy to her well-cast single-location stage play adaptation for the Gen Z crowd.”

Based on the hit horror video game, The Mortuary Assistant was released in select theaters last month. The film is now streaming exclusively on Shudder beginning today.

The Mortuary Assistant follows newly certified mortician Rebecca Owens, who accepts a night shift at a mortuary, embalming bodies alone after hours. As disturbing events escalate, Rebecca uncovers demonic rituals, the dark secrets of her enigmatic mentor, and her own buried trauma — racing to survive the night before her body becomes a vessel for possession.

Willa Holland (“Arrow”) and Paul Sparks (“Boardwalk Empire”) star, with Mark Steger (“Stranger Things”) as The Mimic. The Mortuary Assistant creator Brian Clarke co-wrote the script with Tracee Beebe. Jeremiah Kipp (Slapface) directs.

Originally released on PC in 2022, The Mortuary Assistant quickly became a viral sensation and made its way to Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. The film will expand on the game’s world, delving deeper into the lore of the demonic entities plaguing River Fields.

Proving herself to be a singular voice with Raw and Titane, French writer-director Julia Ducournau is back with new movie Alpha, now playing in theaters from NEON.

Ducournau’s third movie follows Alpha, a troubled 13-year-old who lives with her single mom. Their world collapses the day she returns from school with a tattoo on her arm.

Tahar Rahim (Madame Web), Golshifteh Farahani (Extraction), Mélissa Boros, Emma Mackey (Death on the Nile), Finnegan Oldfield (Infested), and Louai El Amrousy star.

How well do you really know your father? The person who’s a loving dad to you could be something far more dangerous to everyone else. That’s the case in Tubi Original Rockabye.

The psychological thriller is now streaming only on Tubi.

Annie Ngosi Ilonzeh (“Chicago Fire”) stars as a grieving woman who suspects her father didn’t take his own life. Her hunt for the truth turns treacherous when his friends start dying.

Chris Stokes (You Got Served) directs Rockabye from a script he co-wrote with frequent collaborators Marques Houston (Til Death Do Us Part) and Chaz Echols.

Donald Brumfield Jr., Claudia Jordan (Sharknado 5), Wesley Jonathan (“What I Like About You”), Garret Davis, Cisco Reyes, and Lisa Ann Loggins round out the cast.

“Baby Reindeer” meets Misery in UK horror movie Barren, now available at home.

In the film, “After pregnant Emily crashes outside a mill, desperate Julia believes the baby is a gift from God-and will do whatever it takes to make it hers, no matter the cost.”

Rebecca-Clare Evans and Michaela Longden star.

Simon Dinsell directed Barren.

It’s the first of three Friday the 13ths this year, and the horror genre never lets a Friday the 13th pass by without unleashing a handful of new nightmares. This one is no exception.

Here’s all the new horror released on Friday, February 13, 2026!

For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.

After Good Boy and Presence told haunted house tales from unique perspectives — a dog and a ghost, respectively — we now have a haunted house movie from the house’s point of view.

The House Was Not Hungry Then is available on Digital now.

The unique Scottish horror movie revolves around an abandoned house in the Scottish countryside that holds a terrible secret. Day after day, a man posing as a real estate agent lures visitors inside, and one by one they disappear. One night a young woman searching for her estranged father takes refuge inside, but soon begins to feel she’s not alone.

As she gets closer to learning the truth about her father, she explores the dark interior and eavesdrops on the disturbing relationship between the house and its caretaker.

Writer-director Harry Aspinwall makes his feature debut on the film, which stars Bobby Rainsbury (Filth), Clive Russell (“Game of Thrones”), and Bill Paterson (The Witches).

The psychological sci-fi horror slow-burner Honey Bunch from Dusty Mancinelli and Madeleine Sims-Fewer (Violation) is now streaming exclusively on Shudder in the U.S.

The film follows Diana, who wakes from a coma with fragmented memories. Her husband takes her to a facility deep in the wilderness, but she can’t remember why. As her memories begin to creep back in, so do some unwelcome sinister truths about her marriage.

Grace Glowicki (“Strawberry Mansion”), Ben Petrie (BlackBerry), Jason Isaacs (“The White Lotus”), Kate Dickie (The Witch), India Brown (“Invasion”), and Julian Richings (Cube) star.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review out of TIFF, “It’s as ambitious as it is weird, making for one unpredictable foray into sci-fi horror weirdness with a sticky-sweet center.”

Based on the hit horror video game, The Mortuary Assistant is now playing only in select theaters via Epic Pictures. You’ll find it streaming on Shudder beginning March 27.

Cold Storage

A quiet night shift gets explosive in gross-out ways for Joe Keery (“Stranger Things “) and Georgina Campbell (Barbarian, The Watchers) in the sci-fi horror comedy Cold Storage.

The film is now playing only in theaters.

In Cold Storage, “Teacake (Keery) and Naomi (Campbell), two young employees of a self-storage company built on the site of an old US military base, have their wildest night shift ever when a parasitic fungus escapes from the lowest sublevel of the base, where it was sealed by the government decades before. As the temperature rises underground, this highly contagious and rapidly mutating microorganism multiplies and unleashes its brain-controlling, body-bursting terrors on the facility’s inhabitants – human and otherwise.

“With time running out, it’s down to Teacake and Naomi, with the help of a grizzled retired bioterror operative (Liam Neeson), to contain the merciless menace and prevent the explosive extinction of Mankind itself.” Sosie Bacon (Smile), Vanessa Redgrave (Mission: Impossible), and Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) also star in the horror-comedy.

The follow-up feature to Jurassic World: Rebirth and Presence from esteemed writer David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Death Becomes Her), based on Koepp’s novel of the same name, is directed by Jonny Campbell (Netflix’s Dracula). Zombieland’s Gavin Polone produces.

A teenage dream becomes a rock star’s nightmare in Sweetness, which looks like a modern riff on Misery through a Gen Z lens. The thriller is now available on VOD via Saban Films.

In Sweetness, “When a superfan learns that her rock star idol is spiraling into addiction, she makes it her mission to save him, whether he wants her help or not. But when her desperate plan spirals out of control, she kidnaps him in a delusional attempt to “fix” him. What begins as compassion turns into captivity, as she locks him away in the name of love.”

Kate Hallett (Women Talking) and Herman Tømmeraas (“Ragnarok”) star with Aya Furukawa (“The Midnight Club”), Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds), Steven Ogg (“The Walking Dead”), and Amanda Brugel (Jason X). Juno Award-winning Canadian writer-director Emma Higgins makes her feature debut with Sweetness.

From Popeye the Slayer Man producer Jeff Miller, the Twisted Serial Killer Universe kicks off with Ted Bunny. No, that’s not a typo. And it’s now available on VOD outlets.

Ted Bunny introduces the illegitimate son of serial killer Ted Bundy. Raised around rabbits, the crazed heir goes on a killing spree after a documentary crew shows up at his house.

Genre legend Dee Wallace (E.T., Cujo) stars alongside Diana Roman, Brad Satterwhite, Trent Avvenire, Zanna Wyatt, and Bryan Palacios as Ted Bundy.

Michael Fredianelli directs from a script he wrote with Maralynn Adams.

“The film is a throwback to old school horror with a traditional ’80s style primarily meant to evoke nostalgic thrills,” said Fredianelli. “My goal was to balance an interesting and compelling origin story that ties into real-life horror, while maintaining the slasher spirit of crazy kills, idiots in the woods, and awful characters ultimately getting exactly what they deserve.”

Miller’s Twisted Serial Killer Universe will continue in Jeffrey Dollmer.

From the mind of Kristoffer Polaha comes his directorial debut, Mimics, a genre-bending blend of horror, fun, and romance that’s now playing in theaters for Friday the 13th.

Here’s the logline: “Down-on-his-luck impressionist Sam Reinhold makes a pact with Fergus—a wicked, strings-attached puppet—that holds the promise to propel Sam to stardom, unleashing a nightmare that threatens the safety of those he holds dear.”

Filmed in Reno, Nevada, Mimics stars Nashville-based Latina Country singer Mōriah, Saturday Night Live icon Chris Parnell, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Polaha himself.

“I was drawn to this unique story that explores fame and the supernatural, while managing to be at turns funny, romantic, and spooky,” says Polaha. “The movie is a romp. Working on both sides of the camera to tell this story was an extremely gratifying experience.”

It’s all just part of the show… right? The latest horror movie to turn a haunted attraction into a real-life murder party is The Haunted Forest, which is now available on VOD outlets.

In The Haunted Forest, “When Zach, a high-school senior obsessed with all things horror and Halloween, goes to work at his cousin’s famous haunted forest attraction, a series of real-life killings makes him question his devotion to the world of the macabre.”

Indie horror newcomer Keith Boynton wrote and directed The Haunted Forest.

It makes sense that human beings evolved to find comfort in the familiar. After all, if something is familiar, it can be predicted – and if it can be predicted, it can be dealt with. That’s why horror media often loses much of the scare factor the second time you experience it, as being able to anticipate frights naturally makes them less effective (though one could argue that the anticipation itself is just as important).

However, this isn’t always the case, as the rise of interactive horror has allowed genre creators to explore a new avenue of unpredictable frights in the world of videogames. While scripted events like dogs jumping through windows in the original Resident Evil work in much the same way as the static terror of a traditional scary movie, some games opt for a more random distribution of frights meant to keep players constantly on their toes.

One of the most successful examples of this is DarkStone Digital’s The Mortuary Assistant, a 2022 indie horror title that took the world by storm with its chilling mix of job simulation (with the player actually having to go through with their assigned procedures despite the hauntings) and unpredictable jump scares/story events that make every single playthrough unique. With the game turning into a household name, it’s only natural that Hollywood would soon come knocking with an offer to adapt the title into a feature-length movie.

Fast forward to 2026 and Jeremiah Kipp’s The Mortuary Assistant is releasing in limited theaters today, Friday the 13th. In honor of this long-awaited adaptation looking like a faithful re-imagining of its source material, I think it’s worth looking back on the procedurally-generated scares that made the game so popular in the first place, and how Kipp might go about adapting such a unique experience.

Before Darkstone Digital grew into a fully-fledged studio, solo developer Brian Clarke began working on his initial version of The Mortuary Assistant during early 2020. This early prototype was more streamlined and focused less on accurately emulating a real funeral home, but Clarke was surprised to learn that fans were actually willing to support a potential full release simulating real-life embalming techniques while also exploring the story behind the haunting.

It’s precisely this juxtaposition of horror imagery and the day-to-day requirements of a repetitive job that ended up making the project so special, with Clarke soon realizing that he had found a formula capable of sustaining unlimited scares. Since players would always be busy repeating a familiar gameplay loop, any variation of the established formula would immediately stand out as a sign that something was very wrong, with this unpredictability leaving players in a constant state of paranoia even when nothing was happening.

However, despite appearing in random order, the scares themselves were also expertly crafted. Not only are many of these unsettling moments used to flesh out Rebecca’s character and reference her troubling family history (with some of these scenes even showing up in the trailer for the new movie), but Clarke has since gone on record explaining that his main influence when coming up with the title’s supernatural shenanigans came from viral internet videos and found footage movies.

Apparently, the developer wanted to combine modern internet horror tropes with psychological thrills in order to breathe new life into the possession subgenre, with the randomization serving as a way to keep things from feeling like a spooky walking simulator. The procedural presentation also meant that players would be encouraged to play the title over and over again in order to experience a fresh set of scares, making the game into something of an evergreen compilation of the best tropes of the genre.

This also applies to The Mortuary Assistant’s story, as a single shift might be enough for you to get the overall gist of the situation, but it’ll likely take you a handful of runs in order to truly begin to unearth the secrets of River Fields Mortuary. And since the game only gives out a bite-sized portion of narrative at a time, players have no choice but to keep coming back for more. This is why the big-screen adaptation needs to take extra care when translating all of these elements to film, as The Mortuary Assistant was perfectly tailored for an interactive medium.

It would undoubtedly be fun to see Kipp implement a Clue-inspired gimmick where different theaters get to see different cuts of the film with multiple alternate endings, but it makes more sense for the filmmaker to simply dig into Clarke’s influences and borrow from the same sources he did when coming up with scares for the movie. We may have to settle for a linear sequence of frights, but I’m still excited to watch these elaborate scares play out like big-budget Life of Luxury videos with homages to cult classic movies like As Above So Below.

That’s why I think merely adapting the overall narrative (which is surprisingly in-depth if you’re patient enough to explore all of the title’s puzzles) and the “workplace horror” aspect of the experience is the right way to go, especially since fans can simply go home and play the original game after watching the movie if they feel like they need an extra dose of demonic thrills. In fact, I really like the idea of the film and the game being complementary projects instead of competing products.

And with other procedurally-generated indie hits like Exit 8 getting their own successful film adaptations (with that one even impressing audiences at Cannes last year), I know I’m not the only one excited to see how different filmmakers manage to translate one of the most interesting trends in modern horror media.

Performing routine embalming tasks to stave off menacing demons, all while said demons eagerly await a misstep, creates a terrifying pressure cooker experience that catapulted creator Brian Clarke‘s video game The Mortuary Assistant to viral status. It’s so effective at delivering visceral scares that the slight story is almost irrelevant, creating an almost blank canvas when it comes to adapting for film.

That’s the primary expectation of The Mortuary Assistant: translating the scares to screen. Instead, lore takes tedious precedence in an adaptation unable to generate fear.

Introductions to the eponymous character, Rebecca Owens (Willa Holland), and her sullen mentor Raymond Delver (Paul Sparks) get things off to a strong start with an embalming scene showcasing strong practical effects work while establishing some key intel about Rebecca’s new gig. Rebecca’s too preoccupied with her work to notice the cadaver she’s preparing moved, or that Raymond’s peculiar behavior and explicit, creepy warnings to steer clear of the basement indicate something’s seriously amiss with the place. It’s heavy foreshadowing, of course, as Rebecca will eventually find herself alone on the nightshift, ill-prepared for the onslaught of demonic activity.

Once the setup and introductions are out of the way, though, director Jeremiah Kipp, working from a script by Clarke and Tracee Beebe, pulls the curtain back far too wide and too soon. It quickly becomes a scattershot telling of Rebecca’s backstory, her history with addiction and loss, and her lonely present, punctuated by demonic activity in the mortuary to drive home the addiction as possession horror metaphor shaping this adaptation. Holland handles the emotional demands of her role well enough, but quickly becomes lost in the clumsy storytelling that traps Rebecca in a bland cycle of trauma and demonic terror.

Production Designer Chelsea Turner successfully recreates set pieces lifted straight out of the game, and Norman Cabrera Monsters FX house painstakingly brings some of the game’s most haunting entities to screen. If only Kipp employed these valuable assets with any sense of tension or urgency. The scene-stealing Mimic looks great and is wisely used sparingly, but struggles to evoke any semblance of terror in this sleepwalking feature. And Mimic fares stronger than the rest of the lurking entities; most fail to register at all, thanks to the choppy editing and focus on Rebecca’s fractured mental state.

An early line of dialogue points out the open layout of the mortuary, meant to highlight how vulnerable and exposed Rebecca will become as she’s left alone at night, or so she thinks. It’s a callback to the game, of course, but it’s an element the film has no desire to engage with. Despite Turner’s great work, Kipp never pauses long enough to build atmosphere or tension from his creepy setting, offer a clear sense of geography, or let its denizens have their intended impact. There’s a flatness to the scares and a noticeable lack of suspense throughout, as a result.

The game’s lore does factor heavily into the film’s final act, so much so that it robs the film of an actual climax. The heavy-handed addiction metaphor also rears its ugly head as Rebecca’s plight abruptly gives way to lengthy exposition. It’s a sluggish finish to a familiar possession story, even if adhering faithfully to the game.

All might be forgiven if The Mortuary Assistant delivered on what made the game such a success: scaring you silly. The imagery is there, but woefully misutilized. Kipp never lingers long enough on any of it to register; scare tactics get repetitive, and atmosphere is nonexistent. This nightshift nightmare is far more likely to put you to sleep.

The Mortuary Assistant releases in theaters on February 13 before streaming on Shudder beginning March 27.

Patrick Ewald’s Epic Pictures produces via Dread alongside Cole Payne’s Traverse Media and Jacob P. Heineke. Executive producers include Clarke, Katie Page, Yulissa Morales, Randy Sinquefield, Patrick Fischer, and Oliver Garboe.

“With The Mortuary Assistant, we’re thrilled to translate one of gaming’s most unnerving experiences into a relentlessly immersive feature film,” said Ewald. “This is an authentic adaptation grounded in the same dread, the same characters, and the same world that made the game so unforgettable.”

Ewald continues, “We’re bringing River Fields Mortuary to life in full detail, building it from the ground up as a practical set to preserve its claustrophobic atmosphere and sinister realism. The result is a chilling blend of storytelling and sustained tension, and we can’t wait for audiences to step into this terrifying new chapter of horror cinema.”

“Seeing The Mortuary Assistant make the leap from game to film is incredibly rewarding,” added Clarke. “Fans of the game will finally witness the world they’ve explored come alive, while genre film audiences will discover a story filled with tension, dark secrets, and unforgettable scares. It’s a unique crossover that bridges two communities of horror fans in a way I’ve always imagined.”

Good riddance to 2025; there’s a brand new year ahead packed to the gills with hotly anticipated new horror releases.

Even more exciting is that this only covers what’s already been announced; expect to get inundated with surprise announcements and film festival discoveries to further fill the calendar with horror goodies. Until then, this guide covers the notable highlights, from big releases like Scream 7 and Evil Dead Burn to anticipated chillers like Hokum, Obsession, and beyond.

Welcome to Bloody Disgusting’s 2026 Horror Preview.

If this preview of the year’s looming horror offerings is any indication, 2026 is going to be a whirlwind for nonstop horror. Of course, expect some release dates to shift and many surprises yet to be announced in the coming months. In other words, this is only the beginning of the year’s horror offerings. Could this be the year for Adam Wingard’s Onslaught, for example? We’re keeping our fingers crossed. Mike Flanagan’s Untitled Exorcist film shifted off its March release date, but could it still arrive in 2026? We’ll have to wait and see.

In the meantime, buckle up for all the horror on the horizon.

Shudder made a splash today at San Diego Comic-Con, announcing the acquisition of the upcoming film adaptation of Brian Clarke‘s The Mortuary Assistant. The film is being directed by Jeremiah Kipp (Slapface), and co-written by Tracee Beebe (Dog Years) and Clarke. Starring Willa Holland (“Arrow”) and Emmy Award Nominee Paul Sparks (“Boardwalk Empire”), Shudder has set a 2026 release for The Mortuary Assistant.

Alongside the acquisition announcement during San Diego Comic-Con’s “The Bold Voice Of Contemporary Horror” panel, Shudder also revealed the first image from the film featuring Willa Holland as Rebecca Owens, the game’s iconic protagonist, and was accompanied by an in-room exclusive clip. The footage offers an unsettling glimpse of Rebecca preparing to embalm a body as the mortuary’s lights begin to flicker – an eerie sequence that highlights key elements from the game, including the gurney, clipboard, and the letting strip.

“When Shudder indicated the clip from our film they wanted to share at Comic-Con, I was absolutely thrilled. The sequence captured everything I loved about Brian Clarke’s game: the middle of the night strangeness, its elegant minimalism, the ratcheting sense of anticipatory violence, the terror lurking around the corners – and most of all the resourcefulness and vulnerability of Rebecca Owens, played so thoughtfully by Willa Holland,” said director Jeremiah Kipp. “When [the game’s publisher] DreadXP approached me with this project, it resonated with me on a deep personal level – the way horror invites all your darkest demons to come out and play. Shudder and Dread handled my previous film Slapface with such generosity and care, it’s a profound joy to continue the relationship with The Mortuary Assistant.”

“It’s been a long and unbelievable road with The Mortuary Assistant. I never dreamed something I poured two years of my life into alone in a tiny home office could ever grow into an experience like this. I’m so grateful to Epic Pictures, DreadXP, and Shudder for giving a solo developer a chance at something so many devs dream of. Sharing your labor of love is a scary feeling but Jeremiah’s skill and dedication to the source material permeated every day of filming and The Mortuary Assistant quickly evolved into our labor of love. The amazing cast, and crew have created something beautiful and I couldn’t be more excited to have that same feeling of sharing The Mortuary Assistant with horror fans all over again,” said the game’s creator Brian Clarke.

“We’ve been admirers of The Mortuary Assistant since its original release, captivated by its atmosphere and psychological intensity,” said Director of Acquisitions and Productions Adam Koehler. “Under the direction of a filmmaker with a remarkable command of tone and suspense, the film expands on the game’s terrifying world in a way that feels both faithful and deeply cinematic. We’re beyond excited to bring this chilling experience to Shudder.”

The story for The Mortuary Assistant involves mortician Rebecca Owens, a recent Mortician Studies grad, who on her first night at River Fields Mortuary, learns of a sinister presence that resides there. As the dead awaken and malevolent spirits bind themselves to her, Rebecca has to learn how to combat the demons (including the figurative demons of her past) and survive the night.

The Mortuary Assistant was originally released in 2022 for PC via Steam, followed by releases on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series, and the Xbox One.

One of the more terrifying video games in recent memory, The Mortuary Assistant, is getting a feature film adaptation. With filming now underway, Deadline reports that Willa Holland (“Arrow”) and Paul Sparks (“Castle Rock“) will star.

Based on the bestselling game created by Brian Clarke, The Mortuary Assistant follows “Rebecca Owens, a recent mortuary science graduate who takes a night shift job at River Fields Mortuary. Initially, the job seems straightforward — embalming bodies, completing paperwork, and keeping things tidy. But once Rebecca starts working the night shift, things take a dark turn.”

Holland will play Rebecca, with Sparks taking on the role of Raymond Delver, Rebecca’s mortician boss.

The feature adaptation is said to be “a new chapter in the story that will expand on the game’s world and mythology, delving deeper into the lore of the demonic entities plaguing River Fields.”

Tracee Beebe and Brian Clarke adapted the screenplay.  Jeremiah Kipp (Slapface) directs.

Clarke said in a statement, “Seeing The Mortuary Assistant evolve over the years from a small prototype to a full feature film is beyond anything I could have imagined as a solo developer. Jeremiah Kipp is an insanely skilled director, and it has been one of the highlights of my life working with him.

“Jeremiah and the entire team at Epic Pictures have done an amazing job capturing the spirit of the game while adding their own unique cinematic flair. It is an honor to see Willa and Paul bring these characters to life along with the rest of the film crew. I feel extremely fortunate and can’t wait for fans to see The Mortuary Assistant expand into new territory.”

The Mortuary Assistant was published in 2023 by DreadXP. Harrison Abbott wrote in his review of the game, “It’s unnerving, terrifically paced, narratively involving and mechanically inventive. In fact, when it’s all working as intended it’s genuinely one of the best indie horror games to have come out in recent years.”

Patrick Ewald’s Epic Pictures is producing via its horror outfit, Dread, alongside Cole Payne’s Traverse Media.

Stay tuned for additional details on The Mortuary Assistant movie as they arrive.

Super Rare Games are teaming up with DreadXP and developer DarkStone Digital to bring The Mortuary Assistant fans a limited physical edition of the hit horror title for PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch, just in time for Halloween. But you’ll need to be quick once the orders go live, as these physical editions are, after all, limited.

Available for pre-order on October 31 at 1pm ET and shipping in early January, there will be 2000 PlayStation 5 copies of The Mortuary Assistant up for grabs, and 4000 Switch copies.

The PlayStation 5 version of The Mortuary Assistant from Super Rare Games will include the fully assembled PlayStation game with PS5 disc, interior art, manual, slipcover, and exclusive sticker. Meanwhile, the Switch version will have the fully assembled game on cartridge, interior art, full colour manual, an exclusive sticker, and a set of 3 card trading card pack.

For the hardcore fans, you can also purchase the booster card pack and trading card bundle on October 31, as well.

The Mortuary Assistant (which we reviewed here) centres around you having completed your degree in mortuary sciences, and as a result, have taken on an apprenticeship at River Fields Mortuary. Over the past several months you have logged many hours aiding the Mortician in daily tasks along with learning the ins and outs of the embalming process as well as how to properly handle and care for the deceased.

Late one night, you are called into work to handle some embalmings. Death doesn’t keep day time hours. But there is something different about these bodies because there is something different about you. The phone rings with the Mortician on the other end. The rumors are true, and you can not leave.

In addition to the Switch and PlayStation 5, The Mortuary Assistant is also available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series and PC via Steam.

Developer DarkStone Digital has given fans of The Mortuary Assistant a summer treat with the new 1.2 patch, which is available now. Touted as the last major update for the game “for the foreseeable future”, the update includes the usual bug fixes, as well as adds new content for fans to discover.

For starters, the new 1.2 patch adds a new ending to The Mortuary Assistant, along with new lore-based content for fans to devour. The update also includes new haunt events, as well as a new aggressiveness slider for haunts to adjust their frequency in the game. There are also three new bodies for the player to embalm (if you’ve got the stomach for it).

Thank you everyone for continuing to support and play The Mortuary Assistant! As I’ve stated in other posts, this update will be the last major update for the foreseeable future,” explains DarkStone’s Brian Clarke. “That doesn’t mean there won’t be any updates but I have been supporting MA exclusively for almost a year now and it is time for me to focus on new projects and content. Keep an eye out for random things like new bodies, haunts, etc. but the updates will slow dramatically from here. Thank you all again so much for being here to enjoy The Mortuary Assistant!”

The Mortuary Assistant is available on PC via Steam, as well as the Nintendo Switch.

After scaring the crap out of players on Steam, DreadXP and DarkStone Digital’s The Mortuary Assistant has made the leap to the Nintendo Switch. And it’s brought along a friend in BEESWAX GAMES’ SPOOKWARE.

Available now on the Nintendo eShop for $24.99, The Mortuary Assistant centres on Rebecca Owens, a recent Mortician Studies grad, who on her first night at River Fields Mortuary, learns of a sinister presence that resides there. As the dead awaken and malevolent spirits bind themselves to her, Rebecca has to learn how to combat the demons (including the figurative demons of her past) and survive the night.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for something a little more lighthearted, SPOOKWARE is also available via the Nintendo eShop for $9.99. The game involves the three skelebros -Lefti, Midi, and Righti- on a grand road trip through the cutesy world of the dead. After realizing they wasted their lives watching horror movies, they decide to embark on a big adventure that spans across 4 episodes, each containing 3 chapters with their own area, microgames, mechanics, and story.

And if you’re in need of a refresher, you can check out our reviews of The Mortuary Assistant and SPOOKWARE.

Meanwhile, we’re still waiting on news regarding the upcoming film adaptation of The Mortuary Assistant, which is to be directed by Jeremiah Kipp (Sins, Slapface).

While we’re waiting on that fourth season of Shudder’s Creepshow, DreadXP and DarkStone Digital are making things easier (or harder, depending on your view) with their announcement of a video game adaptation based on Shudder’s hit television series!

DreadXP will partner with AMC Networks to produce the adaptation of the iconic horror anthology series, which is based on George R. Romero’s iconic 1982 film. DreadXP’s game is expected to land in 2024 across multiple platforms, with developer DarkStone Digital (creators of The Mortuary Assistant, which is slated to have a film adaptation) handling production.

“As massive fans of Creepshow, we are so excited to collaborate with AMC, Shudder, and Cartel Entertainment to bring that world to an interactive medium,” said Patrick Ewald, Managing Partner and Producer at DreadXP. Ted Hentskchke, Head of Dread XP Productions and Producer added, “The game will represent an expansion of our tremendously successful collaboration with Brian Clarke, whose expertise in crafting lore-rich narratives and clever scares makes him the perfect creative director for the project.”

And just like the films and TV show, DreadXP’s Creepshow video game will retain the anthology horror format, consisting of multiple self-contained horror stories that “cross gameplay genres and tone.” DreadXP obviously have experience with the format, given their Dread X Collection series. A full list of developers working on Creepshow will be announced at a later date.

Fresh off of the success of DarkStone Digital’s The Mortuary Assistant, publisher DreadXP has announced that they’re making the leap to film with an adaptation of the game, which is to be directed by Jeremiah Kipp (Sins, Slapface). Patrick Ewald will produce the film, while DarkStone Digital’s Brian Clarke and Ted Hentschke will executive produce, and Abbey Smith will co-produce. Casting for the production will be announced in the future.

Currently in pre-production, Kipp will also be handling the writing duties for the film adaptation of The Mortuary Assistant. “There’s a quiet, unnerving intensity to The Mortuary Assistant that creeps into the player, creating a sense that something terrible could happen at any moment,” says Kipp. “Writing the adaptation, I wanted to celebrate all of the game that terrified me as well as create a companion piece to it — honoring the dense creepy world developer Brian Clarke (DarkStone Digital) made and translating it into the visual storytelling and character driven horror of narrative filmmaking.”

“It’s such a rare and exciting opportunity to have your work adapted into film. It’s certainly something I never imagined would happen to me when I started developing the game two years ago,” says Clarke. “Movies have always been the main inspiration for the style of my games. I’m always trying to create story, dialogue, and moments that feel filmic, so an opportunity to bring this project full circle is making a dream of mine a reality.”

With all the things that can feasibly go wrong, the promising ideas that are heartbreakingly jettisoned (for either time or budgetary reasons), and the stresses that come with meeting a looming deadline, it’s extraordinary that anybody manages to get a video game released.

Irrespective of how well the end result turns out; you have to appreciate that a staggering amount of effort goes into every single title we play. It’s even a tall order for AAA companies, who typically have hundreds upon hundreds of employees toiling around the clock, equipped with the very best resources that money can buy.

So, when a solo developer manages to see one of their projects through to completion, we ought to get a Vatican-appointed commission to stop by and declare it a bona fide miracle. You’ve got to be extremely driven (or borderline insane) to shoulder the responsibilities of programming, art design, level design and narrative direction all by yourself. And though it may not be mandated by any studio heads or executive taskmasters, it’s inevitably going to require an awful lot of crunch.

Keeping that in mind, Brian Clarke (AKA DarkStone Digital) deserves to be commended for launching The Mortuary Assistant in any state whatsoever. Other than receiving some help with QA testing and the promotional side of things — courtesy of publisher DreadXP — this is his baby through and through.

The fact that it even resembles a finished product, never mind one that has flashes of brilliance, is a testament to his sheer talent and dedication. Unfortunately, the game is also very rough around the edges, marred by various performance issues and bugs.

Before delving into those technical shortcomings, it’s worth acknowledging that The Mortuary Assistant is great at its core. It’s unnerving, terrifically paced, narratively involving and mechanically inventive. In fact, when it’s all working as intended it’s genuinely one of the best indie horror games to have come out in recent years.

You play as Rebecca, a college graduate with a mortuary sciences degree, who is looking to get some practical experience in the field by taking on an apprenticeship at her local funeral parlour. Laughing off warnings from her doting grandmother, she disregards all the silly urban legends that have been linked to River Fields Mortuary (it’s rumoured to be a popular site for occult activity), and enthusiastically heads out for her first day on the job.

Upon arrival, the boss gives you a whistlestop tour of the place and shows you where to find all the tools needed for embalming a corpse. After that hasty induction is dispensed with, he then supervises your first ever attempt at processing a dead body.

Suffice it to say, it’s a very grisly undertaking — with you wiring shut the jaw, peeling eyelids open to insert prosthetic caps, making an incision in the jugular vein and draining fluids from the abdominal cavity — but it seems to be going rather well.

However, you can’t shake the feeling that something is just a little off here. Windows appear to open of their own accord and chemical bottles quite literally fly off the shelves, apropos of nothing. Your employer insists that there are perfectly mundane explanations for these weird phenomena, yet he also seems quite eager to rush you out of the building and sends you packing after only a few minutes.

Foolishly, you decide to ignore this mounting pile of red flags and turn up for a graveyard shift the very next evening, raring and ready to go. That’s when things swiftly turn from bad to worse.

The second you step through the reception door, your boss locks you into the mortuary and reveals that you are being targeted by an eldritch demonic force. Naturally, Rebecca’s first instinct is to assume that this is some sort of bizarre hazing ritual for the new girl, but it doesn’t take long for her to realize that the mortician is being deadly serious.

He’s even left a series of detailed audio recordings for you to play, explaining the steps for banishing this malevolent entity before it’s too late. In a nutshell, you’ve got to consult a paranormal encyclopedia (that will help you identify which demon is currently stalking Rebecca) and then thoroughly examine each of the bodies in cold storage, to find out which one is harbouring the supernatural curse.

Once you’ve figured out who you are dealing with, you must then perform the appropriate exorcism to rid yourself of the wicked spirit in question. Yet should you make a mistake, or needlessly dillydally with your investigation, then you will be vulnerable to possession. And then it’s game over.

The premise is sure to grab you right from the off, as it’s doing a lot of interesting things. For a start, it’s fun to see a horror title where you defeat evil, not through combat or stealthy evasion, but through an extended puzzle instead.

Mortuary Assistant review 2

Using a combination of audio-visual hints, veiled sigils that can be exposed by flamelight, and the information gleaned from your mortuary reports, you must race against the clock to whittle down a list of possible demonic suspects. Like you’re playing a demented game of Clue! You can even go down a surprisingly deep rabbit hole by consuming the exhaustive lore that’s been documented on a special in-universe website, if you want to properly acquaint yourself with the enemy.

Finding the right demon and their host body is a compelling mystery the first time around, and it doesn’t lose its appeal on subsequent playthroughs either (despite the fact that you are mostly doing the same thing on a loop). It’s similar to how you can enjoy repetitious matches in games like Dead by Daylight or Among Us, even though the basic rules don’t change, because the specifics do.

Speaking of which, Clarke’s innovative “Haunt System” is The Mortuary Assistant’s secret weapon. For a more comprehensive breakdown of how this works you can check out Bloody Disgusting’s interview with the developer, but it essentially randomises the story events, changes the demon you’re up against and mixes up the scares, so that no two playthroughs are ever the same.

Its influence could be as minuscule as deciding when the lights will flicker in the examination room or where identifying marks show up on bodies. On the other hand, it could fundamentally alter the entire course of the narrative. For instance, in one playthrough you might be hounded by a pale creature (known as The Mimic), while in another you could be taken on a psychological journey through Rebecca’s devastating past or be tormented by the souls of her dead relatives.

The ingenious system keeps you constantly on your toes, preventing you from being able to memorize the puzzle outcomes or anticipate the frights. There are indeed a lot of variations for you to experience and you will absolutely want to keep coming back for more.

Mortuary Assistant review game

On that note, the replay value is also bolstered by Clarke’s keen ability to get under your skin. He knows just how to orchestrate an effective horror sequence and does so with admirable restraint. You won’t find any cheap jump scares here, as the developer goes in the polar opposite direction. Instead, he subtly hides creepy moments throughout the game right under your nose, many of which can be easily missed if you’re not looking hard enough.

Malign faces will appear in the background of photographs, scrawled notes will taunt you into committing suicide, rictus ghouls will silently materialize over your shoulder, and naked cadavers (with prosthetic caps eerily obscuring their eyes) will peer at you through rain-drenched windows.

You’re almost incentivised to go hunting for these macabre easter eggs, as some of them are really clever. During one shift, I went to have another listen to the tutorial voice notes (for a quick refresh on identifying the correct demon), only to discover that the audio recording had been replaced with a harrowing message from beyond the grave.

In addition to this, Clarke has mastered the fine art of the “Dread Scare”. If you’re not familiar with this term (coined by Kitty Horrorshow) it’s basically when a game coerces you into doing something that more genre-savvy players know will end badly — like investigating a strange noise, meddling with suspicious objects, or venturing into darkened environments.

In the case of The Mortuary Assistant, there are several instances where you will have to work up the courage to approach skeletal hands that are beckoning you into dimly lit rooms or walk down corridors that are blocked by menacing wraiths.

Then there are those duties you’ve got to perform as part of your 9-5 at the funeral home. Puncturing needles into a dead person’s gums and hooking up tubes to their internal organs is obviously unpleasant. Not to mention, there is the intensely gruesome trocar procedure, rendered here as a graphic minigame that is guaranteed to turn stomachs.

However, you’ll be surprised by how fast your visceral reaction to these things dissipates and you’ll soon be working your way down the checklist in a kind of autopilot. If the goal was to make you feel like a desensitised professional, whose job makes them numb to all the guts and gore, then Clarke did a bang-up job here.

After a while, the embalming process becomes a perversely satisfying routine and a welcome distraction from the more distressing supernatural encounters. So much so, that the fan community has already requested that a ghost-free simulator mode be added, letting you get on with the corpse perseveration tasks unmolested.

With all that said, The Mortuary Assistant has the makings of an outstanding horror title. Alas, it also feels like I’m constantly battling against the game itself to enjoy it, thanks to a litany of technical issues that have yet to be sorted.

Mortuary Assistant review

It goes without saying that the problems I am about to describe are based on my own subjective experiences and that you may well avoid most of them. Indeed, I sincerely hope that’s the case because they can be very disruptive.

I’m rarely able to complete a shift without running afoul of some game-breaking bug. Among other things, contextual interactions have stopped working for me altogether, audio has played at a comically-accelerated rate, and the inventory menu has failed to display.

Meanwhile, I’ve spawned into empty voids on numerous occasions, gotten stuck in perpetual loading screens, ran into T-posing ghosts, had to reset the game when key story events didn’t trigger, suffered multiple hard-crashes and, worst of all, lost all of my progress. That last point has been the ultimate deal breaker for me, as I’ve now how to repeat my first shift at least half a dozen times and cannot bear to go through it again. To his credit, Clarke has been valiantly fighting fires and acting on feedback since launch, with new patches coming out every single day, so hopefully this part of the review quickly becomes obsolete.

As it stands though, I can only talk about the experience I personally had, and it was a very choppy one. Maybe I’m just profoundly unlucky.

Yet it’s worth reiterating that, when the bugs are taken care of, this will a very special game that deserves your attention.

The Mortuary Assistant is available now.

Players today can finally embalm and exorcize the dead in DreadXP and Darkstone Digital’s supernatural horror game The Mortuary Assistant. Available now on Steam, you can snag The Mortuary Assistant for a cool 10% discount from now until August 9.

The Morturary Assistant centres on Rebecca Owens, a recent Mortuary Sciences grad who’s starting an apprenticeship at the River Fields Mortuary. Rebecca is called into work one night to handle some embalmings. However, there’s something different about these bodies. Things are made more interesting when the Mortician calls, saying that those rumors about possession and demonic acts are true, and that you can’t leave.

As a result, you’ll be facing demonic banishments and creepy puzzles, along with detailed mortician tasks that have been researched from real-life morticians. Each playthrough features different demons, bodies, and scares that are custom tailored to your playthrough. You’ll need to balance your tasks at the mortuary with hunting for clues. Brave the dark hallways and pay close attention to details if you wish to walk away with your soul intact.

If you’d like to try before you buy, you can also download the demo for The Mortuary Assistant available from Steam.

And don’t forget to check out our interview with The Mortuary Assistant‘s developer, Brian Clarke aka Darkstone Digital.

“The amount of people who want to be morticians, or have some kind of interest in embalming, is alarmingly high!”

Brian Clarke (aka DarkStone Digital) discovered just how common it is to have this ghoulish fascination with death, when he released his initial prototype for The Mortuary Assistant back in 2020.

Serving as a 10-minute appetiser — for what would later be expanded into a full game— the indie horror had a gripping premise. In it, you played as a funeral director’s newbie apprentice (named Rebecca), who was thrown in at the deep end when her employer bailed on a shift at the very last minute.

You were subsequently left holding the bag on what turned out to be the mortuary’s busiest night ever and had to prepare all the dead bodies yourself. This entailed donning the appropriate attire, mixing the embalming chemicals, and collecting a grisly assortment of tools so that you could make a jugular incision.

Being left alone in that situation is probably scary enough for most people but, this being a horror title, things quickly went from bad to worse. While you were performing your duties, lights would flicker of their own accord, scrawled messages instructed you to kill yourself, eerie whispers could be heard emanating from off-screen, and the cadaver you were meant to be operating on unaccountably disappeared from its gurney.

As a proof of concept, it was a short but sweet experience that culminated with a decent jump scare and an abrupt cut to black (as is tradition for these things). No matter how efficient you were as an undertaker, you could only ever make it about a third of the way down your to-do list before a demon attacked and then it was game over.

However, there was something about this prototype that managed to capture people’s attention, which is why Clarke decided to pursue his macabre idea a little further. Flash forward two years later and he is now on the cusp of launching a finished version of The Mortuary Assistant on Steam.

Published by DreadXP, he hopes that this more fleshed-out take will be able to satiate those who were (perhaps a little too) invested in completing their original shift over at River Fields funeral parlour.

To find out more, Bloody Disgusting spoke to Clarke in an exclusive interview.

One Seriously Messed Up Fun House

The Mortuary Assistant 3

“With this full release version, you’ll finally be able to do the whole embalming process from beginning to end. Apparently, that’s what everyone wanted to do the first time around. At least, that’s according to the feedback I got.”

Upon telling us this, Clarke lets out an unnerved chuckle, presumably taken aback by how great an appetite for corpse preservation there is within the gaming community.

Sure enough, those who are keen to hone their embalming technique will have ample opportunity to do so with the Mortuary Assistant’s new build, as you’re no longer merely taking care of a single body. Instead, every playthrough will get you to deal with three (randomly selected) cadavers, each with their own unique backstories and preparation requirements.

During any given shift, you’ll have to get bodies out of cold storage, spot their identifying marks, input findings onto the River Fields computer system, drain fluids, make clinical incisions and even dabble with a bit of cremation.

In other words, you’ll be responsible for all manner of gruesome nastiness. Which wouldn’t be quite so distressing, were it not for the fact that the place is also haunted and you’re being stalked by a malevolent presence throughout.

Delivering his impromptu elevator pitch, Clarke said: “I’ve distilled my idea into one brief sentence: ‘Dead bodies in a funhouse.’ Because that perfectly sums up what I’m going for!

“I thought it was a cool setting that people hadn’t used much before in video games. So, I wanted to do it proper justice and decided to carry out in-depth research into how mortuaries [operate]. I watched tons of instructional videos on YouTube, read countless articles about mortuary sciences and even read some educational documents about how to use the tools.”

Don’t go mistaking the game for an accurate simulator though, as Clarke did take creative liberties in order to make the interactions feel more visceral.

“I ended up going with this weird combination of modern and slightly archaic techniques, picking whatever was creepiest for the scene in question. For example, the specific trocar method that we use in the game is not that prevalent anymore and usually involves a few extra steps, but I felt that the old-fashioned way was much better suited to horror. “I’ve had actual morticians reach out to me after playing the demo, complimenting its authenticity and the level of detail. But they always follow up that praise with something like: ‘We do [embalming] this way’, ‘That’s kind of outdated’ or ‘the trocar process should be a multi-step thing.’

“Which I do appreciate, because I did my due diligence and researched everything. However, I’m just trying to abbreviate the process for the sake of the player and that means omitting certain things and playing up to the horror aspect.”

Thinking Small, Dreaming Big

The Mortuary Assistant 2

When describing his ambition for the game, Clarke said: “I knew I wanted two things. I wanted spooky dead bodies and I wanted a claustrophobic setting that gave me a high degree of control over what the player sees. The mortuary scenario happened to meet both of those requirements.”

On that note, one of the first things that might strike you about The Mortuary Assistant is how remarkably condensed it is. The entire thing takes place within the confines of a funeral home and the only respite you get from this suffocating environment is a quick prologue and a few surreal dream sequences.

Of course, the decision to make the game so pared down was an intentional one, given that Clarke already has his work cut out for him as a solo developer. After all, he is responsible for creating the story, writing the complex lore, programming the various systems, and figuring out the artistic design. So, it naturally made sense for him to have a manageable concept.

None of this is to imply that Clarke is an amateur though. Far from it, he has 17 years’ worth of experience in the industry, 13 of which he spent at AAA companies working on MMOs like Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, Rift and Defiance. He even had a stint over at LucasArts, where he served as lead environment artist on a Star Wars project.

As such, it is fair to say that Clarke has got considerable pedigree. Nevertheless, he is still getting used to doing everything on his own.

Since adopting the DarkStone Digital moniker, he has developed a number of solo projects and experimented with a few different genres to refine his craft. He’s done bullet-hell shooters (Outstation), sci-fi puzzle outings (The Subject) and a narrative-driven escape room (Our Secret Below).

Reflecting on how he is steadily finding his groove, Clarke admitted: “The last one was a little better, because it was at a scale that was easier for me to manage on my own, and I could focus on telling a clearer story. That’s why I’m continuing down that same path with The Mortuary Assistant.”

Yet while this latest offering might appear slight in terms of its pure square footage, it’s actually way more ambitious on a technical level. In the developer’s own words, the small environment belies a “whole lot of work that went on under the hood.”

Introducing “The Haunt System”

According to Clarke, most of his considerable time and effort was channeled into refining the game’s unique “Haunt System”, which ensures that every single playthrough is a little different from the last.

He explained: “People tend to equate length with value for money nowadays and it only takes a few hours to ‘complete’ an average run of The Mortuary Assistant. However, there’s a lot more content in the game than first meets the eye.

“I wanted to make something that people could experience over and over again, while still encountering something new each time. That’s why I built the [Haunt] System.”

In terms of how this works, the title is basically broken up into a series of vignettes that, unbeknownst to the player, can be mixed and matched together. There are multiple iterations of the opening, the second act can veer off in a few different directions, the main antagonist can take various sinister forms, and there are five major endings.

Unlike in, say, Until Dawn or The Quarry, these aren’t presented to you as branching paths that you can influence. Rather, there’s an element of potluck going on behind the scenes, with all the important decisions being made by the game itself. Right under your nose.

Clarke elaborated: “The system essentially builds your experience when you first load in, dictating which narrative elements you’re going to see over the course of the night. Someone may get more of Rebecca’s story, whereas another person might get to explore the history of the mortuary instead. Or even a combination of both.

“At the beginning of the shift we determine the key story events, the demonic entity that you’re going to be dealing with, and the bodies you’re going to have to process. But as far as the ending is concerned, that’s very much dependent upon what the player does, the lore documents they’ve found and if they’ve made any grave mistakes.”

Think of it like a prix fixe restaurant menu. The interchangeable dead bodies are your appetisers, the story focus is your entrée, the chosen demon is your dessert course, and The Haunt System is a presumptuous date who insists on ordering for you.

Regardless of what it decides to serve up though, you’ll inevitably end up with a fragmented view of the narrative. It’s impossible to see everything in one go, as each telling of the story is filled with gaps and unanswered questions. So, the only way to get a full picture of everything is to play through it numerous times.

Clarke continued: “The idea is that you do it again to see more and over time gradually ‘collect’ all the missing pieces of the puzzle. The game remembers what you’ve already seen in the previous night and then feeds you something different for your next shift. And this keeps happening until you’ve experienced the entire story.”

The system also decides which scares to feature in your playthrough and where exactly to deploy them for maximum impact. By Clarke’s estimates, there are approximately 100 of these dynamic events in The Mortuary Assistant, ranging from shadowy figures looming in the corner of a room, to naked corpses peering at you through windows, and a freaky creature (dubbed “The Mimic”) perching itself on nearby cabinets.

You might be confronted with all three of these during your first shift, or you might not see any of them. The uncertainty is meant to keep you on edge, as even veteran players won’t be able to tell what’s coming, and there could always be a surprise around the next corner.

“The system checks against things like: which demon has been summoned in the playthrough; how fast you are progressing; where you are in the room; what you have in your inventory, which direction you’re facing, and whether the lights are turned on. If the right criteria is met, then it will fire off the appropriate scare event. If not, it’ll circle back through and find another one.”

Inspired By ‘True Events’ and YouTube Clips

The Mortuary Assistant 1

As you’d expect, this randomised approach made it quite difficult for Clarke to script the horror or to perfectly calibrate jump scares. Yet that wasn’t too much of a concern for the developer, as he was instead aiming for a feeling of insidious dread.

“I was inspired by the ambient feel of found footage movies” he explained. “Paranormal Activity was a big one for me [because] it was one of the first [films] that really left me feeling uneasy afterwards. I’m a big fan of that ‘it could happen to you’ style of horror. “I also watch a bunch of creepy shorts on YouTube. There’s a channel called Slapped Ham, that has a whole lot of closed-circuit TV clips, with ghosts being caught on camera and stuff like that. You know, those things where disturbing music plays in the background, while a weird dark figure is peering out from the closet in a home video or whatever.

“As silly as all that is, it really inspired me with the Mortuary Assistant because so much of that stuff is easily relatable to people. They see these home videos where there’s a weird face in the dark or somebody ominously standing outside a window, and they feel like it could happen to them.

“I wanted to capture that feeling in a game. In fact, there’s actually a disclaimer at the very beginning, just for flavor and fun, that says the things that happen here are based on actual events. Which is kind of true. It was inspired by online articles that I read and those weird videos.”

When you get around to playing the game, you will immediately understand what Clarke is talking about. The scares here aren’t loud and in-your-face, but chillingly quiet. For instance, you could be investigating some eldritch markings on the floor, only to look up and see a pale hand outstretched from the darkness, beckoning you to approach.

“Some people have been calling them ‘silent screamers’, but I prefer the term ‘reverse jump scares’. While I don’t explicitly draw your attention to them, I have implemented a detection system so that these events won’t trigger until you’re looking in the right direction.

“I didn’t want to simply wrestle control of the camera away from the player and then startle you with a frightening image. I want you to feel like you’ve noticed the creepy thing by sheer [happenstance]. That way, you’ll constantly be wondering if there’s something else watching you.

“In fact, there have been numerous occasions where YouTubers and Streamers have got in touch with me to say that they were editing their gameplay footage, and noticed a demon in the background that they didn’t see before. I love that. I think it’s really eerie.

“Even if it means that the average player will miss about 70% of those more hidden scares, I still think it’s worth it for the people who do spot them.”

You’ll be able to scour for these unsettling images yourself when The Mortuary Assistant launches on August 2. Reflecting on the encroaching release date, Clarke said: “It’s never going to seem ready to me. I’ve been working on this thing for two years now and there’s so much that I feel like I could add to it. I could put in new haunting events, do some extra fine-tuning, or give it a little more polish […] It can be tough to feel like it’s done, but I know that eventually it does have to come out.”

That being said, he won’t necessarily be finished with the project once it unlocks on Steam. On the contrary, Clarke told us that he has plans to port the game to Xbox and PlayStation in the future and that he is hoping to send it to a localisation house, so that it can be enjoyed in languages other than English. Most enticingly, he also mentioned that regular updates (particularly around Halloween) could be on the card to give it a little more longevity.

If that’s the case, then those embalming fanatics that have been waiting around since 2020 will have a lot to look forward to.

With their participation in Dread X Collection 5 now available, developer Darkstone Digital is turning to their other title, The Mortuary Assistant, which will now be heading to Steam on August 2.

The upcoming first-person horror title puts you in the shoes of Rebecca Owens, a recent Mortuary Sciences grad who’s starting an apprenticeship at the spooky River Fields Mortuary. As these things go, late one night, you are called into work to handle some embalmings. But there’s something different about these bodies, because there is something different about you. The phone rings with the Mortician on the other end. It seems that those rumors about possession and demonic acts are true, and you can’t leave.

As a result, in The Mortuary Assistant, you’ll be facing demonic banishments, creepy puzzles, detailed mortician tasks, and multiple endings. Each playthrough of The Mortuary Assistant features different demons, bodies, and scares that are custom tailored to your playthrough. You’ll need to balance your tasks at the mortuary with hunting for clues. Brave the dark hallways and pay close attention to details if you wish to walk away with your soul intact.

The scary bits don’t just end with the demons. As a mortuary assistant, you have duties to perform. Namely, making incisions on the dead, pumping their remaining blood out, retrieving them from the cold storage, and conducting embalmings. It just so happens that things get difficult once your cadavers start wandering around…

If you’re eager to check out the game before you buy it, The Mortuary Assistant has a demo available now.

We’ll have to wait a little bit longer for DreadXP’s Dread X Collection 5, as the anthology has hit a snag. Originally scheduled for release today, Dread X Collection 5 will now instead release on May 20th.

No reason was given for the delay, but it’s probably safe to assume that the two-week bump is mainly for last-minute polish for some of the games in the collection.

If you’re new to the concept of the Dread X Collection series, the whole thing started back in 2020, with indie devs getting together to create short horror games around a common theme. For this fifth iteration, the collection consists of “12 delightfully twisted short-form nightmares” that center around the theme of “entertainment”.

Dread X Collection 5 will bring players to “terrifying locales like haunted nightclubs, dark carnivals, haunted puppet shows, the country Finland in the year 1888, a karaoke bar toilet, and so much more!” Each game in the collection has its unique take on what truly makes a great horror experience.

You can check out the first batch of games in the collection here, and the other half here. And of course, you can do the wishlisting thing on Steam.

Indie horror publisher DreadXP has announced that they’ll be hitting the big leagues later this month with a booth at PAX East 2022 in Boston. Along with making their debut as a major trade show exhibitor, DreadXP will be showcasing four of their titles with new hands-on demos for Dread Delusion, My Friendly Neighborhood, The Mortuary Assistant, and SPOOKWARE Multiplayer.

The publisher will also have new merchandise based on their most popular titles at the booth, as well as enter giveaways.

“Almost two years after the release of our very first game, DreadXP will soon celebrate its growth as a games publisher by making its debut at PAX East 2022,” said Ted Hentschke, Head of Productions at DreadXP. “We’re all extremely excited to exhibit at the show for the first time and offer hands-on demos to attendees. And while we’ll never truly leave behind the grungy, dark dwelling where the company’s humble beginnings originated from, we’re excited to see DreadXP enter the big leagues and spread our “positively spooky” brand of games to more fans. We’re only just getting started as well.”

As mentioned, Dread Delusion, My Friendly Neighborhood, The Mortuary Assistant, and SPOOKWARE Multiplayer will all have new demos on hand for players to try. Along with those four titles, Sucker for Love: First Date (which was released this past January with Neil enjoying the game) will also be available for players to try their luck in dating Eldritch horrors.

Dread Delusion is an upcoming open world RPG with a retro-aesthetic. Players will carve their path through flying continents of a shattered land. Discover curious towns, unearth occult secrets, master powerful magic, and change the world through your choices.

My Friendly Neighborhood will put players into the work-boots of Gordon, a repairman tasked with shutting down the sudden broadcast of a cancelled children’s’ TV show called ‘The Friendly Neighborhood’.

The Mortuary Assistant sees you having completed your degree in mortuary sciences, and taking on an apprenticeship at River Fields Mortuary. You have heard rumors of families believing that their deceased loved ones in your care were possessed or otherwise entangled with the paranormal. Late one night, you are called into work to handle some embalmings. The phone rings with the Mortician on the other end. The rumors are true, and you can not leave.

SPOOKWARE Multiplayer is an all-new multiplayer mode is coming to SPOOKWARE (which we reviewed here), DreadXP’s fast-paced microgame collection inspired by classic horror icons.

Attendees can find DreadXP on the PAX East show floor at Booth #20079, in the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, from April 21 – April 24, 2022 during Expo Hall hours (10:00 AM – 6:00 PM ET).
