In February, screenwriter Jeff Buhler (The Midnight Meat Train, Pet Sematary) and director Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact, At the Devil’s Door) delivered The Prodigy. Starring It’s Jackson Robert Scott as Miles, The Prodigy centered its creepy kid around the concept of reincarnation. Miles happened to be born at the precise moment serial killer Edward Scarka died during a police raid. Miles soon begins to exhibit signs of intelligence far beyond his years. At first, his mother Sarah (Taylor Schilling) does everything she can to nurture his talents, but eventually realizes something is very, very wrong with Miles. If you’re familiar with creepy kid horror, then all of its familiar tropes and story beats won’t offer much in the way of surprises, save for one intense scene between Miles and Arthur Jacobson (Colm Feore), the reincarnation expert who offers Sarah help with saving Miles.

The following month brought The Hole in the Ground, an Irish horror film by director/co-writer Lee Cronin in his feature debut. Like The Prodigy, this one heavily revolves around a mother and her strange-behaving son. Only this time, it’s not reincarnation to blame, but the possibility that mom’s son might have been replaced with a changeling. The introduction of Irish folklore and the implications of being swapped for something inhuman makes for some genuinely unsettling moments in this underseen creepy kid horror movie.

While Jordan Peele’s Us, also released in March, isn’t a creepy kid horror movie, it’s worth mentioning because of the Tethered versions of Zora and Jason. The narrative centered around Lupita Nyong’o’s Adelaide and Red in a human against doppelganger fight for dominance, but Red’s children Umbrae and Pluto were scene-stealers in terms of pure dread and terror. The entire cast of Us were brilliant in their dual roles, but for young actors Shahadi Wright Joseph and Evan Alex, it’s next level genius. The otherworldly movement and expression of the pyro-obsessed Pluto and cunning Umbrae brought the horror unlike any other Tethered in the movie. Us might not be a creepy kid movie, but the creepy kids in it are extremely effective.

Keeping the trend moving at a consistent pace, April saw the release of Pet Sematary, a new adaptation of Stephen King’s beloved novel. Its major departures from the source material created a huge divide in viewer reactions, but most can agree that Jeté Laurence’s performance as Ellie Creed elicits chills. Grasping why this new take switched out Gage’s death and resurrection for the older Ellie became a lot clearer during the quieter scenes between undead Ellie and her father Louis (Jason Clarke). Mundane tasks like giving your child a bath or putting them to bed has never been as disturbing as it has here. Like Wright Joseph and Alex in Us, Lawrence deftly balanced the sweeter, innocent Ellie with the inhuman Wendigo using her broken body as a vessel for evil. It’s uncanny.

Next week brings BrightBurn, a creepy kid twist on a familiar Superman origin story. What if the alien child that crash-landed on Earth and was adopted by a good-natured country family didn’t grow up to be a hero, but something far more malevolent and destructive? That’s the question this creepy kid horror story presents. And if the trailer is any indication, BrightBurn might be the most brutal creepy kid horror film yet.

Annabelle Comes Home might be focused on the eponymous creepy doll and the entities residing in the Warren’s artifact room, but trailers seem to hint at least one of the young girls might find herself possessed- another type of creepy kid. The Turning, a modern adaptation of The Turn of the Screw that stars Finn Wolfhard as creepy kid Miles, was originally set to release in February before getting bumped to a 2020 release. February also marked the announcement for season two of Netflix’s The Haunting series, this one to be named The Haunting of Bly Manor; also based on The Turn of the Screw. It’s expected to arrive in 2020, which means that the creepy kid trend looks to continue into next year. But with just over half a year left of 2019, there’s plenty of room for more creepy kids to pop up and hold us over in the meantime.

The UK-based band was made famous with their video for “Firestarter” off their incredible Fat of the Land (1997).

Over the weekend, many horror fans took to social media to complain that Happy Death Day 2U‘s trailers misrepresented the film as a straight up slasher-horror movie, when in actuality it was more of a sci-fi/comedy… with a sidelined slasher element. Personally speaking, I’m confused about the fact that anyone ever expected a sequel to Happy Death Day, itself a very comedic take on the slasher sub-genre, to be a full-on horror movie, but I digress. If there was any problem with the film’s marketing campaign, I’d argue the issue was that the trailers actually made Happy Death Day 2U seem far less interesting than it turned out to be.

Mind you, there are no doubt many, many movie-goers who prefer to know next to nothing about new movies before they see them, but the reality is, general audiences are only going to pay to see new movies when they’re bit by a particular hook being marketed. The first Happy Death Day, centered on a college girl who’s stuck in a time loop and has to relive the day of her death over and over again until she finds her murderer, had a killer hook, so it was no big surprise that it was such a hit at the box office. Back in 2017, the film’s domestic opening weekend take totaled $26,039,025, ensuring a sequel wasn’t far behind.

But Happy Death Day 2U, well, it didn’t fare quite as well. The film made just shy of $10 million in its traditional opening weekend – the current Wednesday-Monday estimate, however, brings the total up to around $15 million – which is far below the roughly $30 million estimate that projections had suggested heading into the weekend. Granted, its $9 million budget ensures that Happy Death Day 2U will be profitable regardless, but one has to wonder why the sequel to such a hit movie under-performed to such an extent.

My best guess? If you go back and watch Happy Death Day 2U‘s trailers, they mostly suggest that the sequel is the exact same movie as its predecessor. And while the two movies do indeed feel cut from much the same cloth, what the marketing did not divulge is that Happy Death Day 2U’s storyline is a bit more of a deviation than it probably seemed to be.

In Christopher Landon’s sequel, Tree doesn’t merely get stuck back in the same time loop for a second time, but rather, she’s actually transported to a whole new dimension entirely. In this alternate universe, things are different than they were/are in the first film’s universe, and the main storyline in the film centers on Tree’s struggle to decide whether she wants to live in Universe A or Universe B. Confusing things, Tree’s mom is still alive in Universe B.

Now that’s an interesting hook, and I can’t help but wonder aloud if maybe, just maybe, “spoiling” that hook would’ve gotten more people interested in seeing Happy Death Day 2U this past weekend. And I have to imagine that the reason many fans of the first film didn’t plunk down the money for a ticket is because the trailers convinced them that the sequel was basically going to do little more than rehash what they had already seen back in 2017.

(In many ways, it kind of does, so maybe the problem is the film itself, not its marketing.)

Another recent horror movie that perhaps suffered from this same marketing issue was Orion’s The Prodigy, which made just $5,853,061 during its opening weekend. The marketing was heavily built around the question “What’s wrong with Miles?” and it wasn’t unless/until we paid to see it that we found out. But what’s strange about The Prodigy is that the answer to that question isn’t actually even a reveal in the movie. It’s outright stated in the opening scene.

We find out *immediately* at the start of The Prodigy, before we even meet Miles, that his body was inhabited at birth by the soul of a sadistic serial killer, which would seem to be a second or even final act twist but is actually presented within the film as an opening act story beat. The film’s marketing, rather than divulging this hook, instead made us think The Prodigy was just another creepy kid horror movie, and I’ve been having a hard time wrapping my head around the decision to be so secretive about what is actually the film’s first scene.

With a marketing campaign that played up The Prodigy’s compelling “past life regression” storyline, would more people have purchased a ticket to see it? Can we chalk up the film’s under-performance at the box office to an unnecessarily vague marketing campaign?

One thing I can say for sure is that I certainly don’t envy anyone in charge of marketing movies for studios, as it’s very difficult to strike the perfect balance and get people interested in seeing a movie while at the same time retaining secrets best discovered inside of a theater rather than on the computer at home. And no matter what, let’s be real here, most of us (myself included) are going to complain either way. All I’m suggesting is that when a movie has a killer hook going for it, maybe it’s not a bad idea for the trailers to spoil it.

But I’m just thinking aloud here. Feel free to chime in below with your own thoughts.

While Alita topped projections, Universal Pictures/Blumhouse’s Happy Death Day 2U (read our review) saw diminishing returns and underperformed. Early tracking pegged the Happy Death Day sequel, also directed by Christopher Landon, to open with $30M. Early estimates have it sitting at only $13.5M here in the States, half that of its predecessor. It added another $11.8 million internationally for a $25.3M global opening.  Even though the sci-fi slasher underperformed, it’s still likely that this sequel will be heavily profitable being that the budget is reported to be a mere $9M. We can start discussing a trilogy when this tops $35M globally, which should be by the end of next weekend.

Orion Pictures’ return to the big screen The Prodigy (read our review) continues to limp its way through a release. After a weak $6M opening, the film is currently sitting at $11M domestically. Thankfully, the budget is reported at only $6M, which means it needs $20M (give or take) globally to break even. We’re still waiting for international numbers.

Quick updates: Columbia Pictures’ Escape Room (review) is now sitting at $115M globally and M. Night Shyamalan‘s Split sequel, Glass (review), currently holds $234M. Both are massive hits.

I’m often asked why these box office numbers matter to us. They don’t, really, although a film’s success or failure can impact our fandom. For example, fans of Alita have been waiting years for this adaptation. In my opinion, Fox played a dangerous game with the Star War-sized budget and now, if the film is a failure, fans will be the ones who lose. On the other side of the spectrum is Blumhouse, who produces films in the $5-10M range and possesses the strong distribution arm of Universal Pictures. All of their releases are set up for success, and even in the case of a film underperforming, like Happy Death Day 2U, there’s still a chance for yet another sequel. What does it all mean? Again, nothing really, although hardcore cinephiles are always rooting not only for a film to be good but for it to also be successful. I don’t see anything wrong with that.

We here at Bloody Disgusting love the film and were hoping it would make waves at the box office, unfortunately, it had a quiet opening to just $6M here in the States. The good news is that the budget is a modest $6M and there are still international numbers set to arrive. The latter will make or break the film’s success as the domestic take (most likely) won’t cover the film’s budget and marketing costs. We’re rooting for it.

The James Cameron-produced, Robert Rodriguez-directed Alita: Battle Angel (read our review) hasn’t opened here in the States yet, but has managed $32M overseas in its opening weekend. This is a solid number had the budget not reached a reported $150-$200M. It’s highly unlikely that the film, starring Rosa Salazar as a revived female cyborg, will manage to recoup its massive budget and marketing costs. It needs a global run of $500M-$600M to even have breathing room around the collar. Ouch.

Other updated numbers still being added include Sony’s Escape Room at $108M globally and M. Night Shyamalan‘s Split sequel, Glass, sitting at $221M.

In specialty news, Lords of Chaos, the vicious, unapologetic, and riveting true story of the birth of Norwegian Black Metal managed $28k in just four theaters, which is a $7,000 per screen average. Not too shabby. This must-see dramatic thriller stars Rory Culkin (Scream 4) as Euronymous and Emory Cohen (The Place Beyond the Pines) as Varg as two members of Mayhem, a group of friends with a flair for publicity, church-burning and murder.

It was Waxwork’s aim to create a vinyl record that could appear ‘possessed,’ and by using UV reactive compounds, the record emits an eerie, glowing splatter effect when exposed to a black light. The unique result is a stunning vinyl record, both sonically and visually. Much like the character Miles, the vinyl soundtrack itself is hiding something sinister in plain sight.

In the clip, Schilling’s character takes her son to the doctor only to learn that “the invading soul will soon have control…and Miles will be gone.” The casting appears to be a little on-the-nose as the doctor just feels like he’s in on everything, sort of like in Rosemary’s Baby. No?

While there were no evil child-themed baby shower games to be played at the screening, the mothers-to-be were all greeted with free popcorn before they were all invited to the front of the intimate theater before the movie began. The women were all able to celebrate the miracle of pregnancy in unison while preparing for a film that was potentially going to induce them into early labor.*

*No one went into early labor during the screening of this film.

Director Nicholas McCarthy (The Pact, At the Devil’s Door) sent a personal message to greet the attendees:

“Thank you for agreeing to watch The Prodigy when you are pregnant.  You are all completely insane.

“As the father of a child that is the same age as the boy in the movie, I can say with some certainty that you should not fear what you are going to see, because most of it likely won’t happen to you. MOST of it.

“Also, enjoy going out at all because that privilege is about to be robbed from you for the next 20 years.

“In all seriousness, I really do appreciate that you have come out to see the movie and hope you like it.  You are wonderful people to come tonight,  And, I repeat: completely insane.“

After the screening, one of the mothers-to-be even exclaimed: “In the best possible way, fuck that movie!”

We officially can’t wait for 2019 – the release calendar looks ridiculously stacked. There’s an insane amount of horror on the horizon, from highly anticipated reboots, sophomore efforts by breakout voices in horror, festival darlings, and so, so much more. As this decade is winding down, it’s clear horror intends to end it with a bang.

Here’s what we’re most looking forward to:

Escape Room – January 4

The first major theatrical release of the year is the latest by director Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan, Insidious: The Last Key). Six strangers are lured to a mysterious room, and are forced to rely on their wits and each other to solve a series of traps in a game of life or death. Escape Room stars Deborah Ann Woll, Tyler Labine, Logan Miller, Taylor Russell, and Adam Robitel.

Glass – January 18

Two years after M. Night Shyamalan surprised audiences with the tease of Unbreakable’s David Dunn (Bruce Willis) at the end of Split, he brings the unwitting superhero back in a major way by pitting him against not just former foe Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson), but Split’s Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) as well. Anya Taylor-Joy’s Casey Cooke returns to the fold, too. More Crumb and Dunn sounds great, and it’ll be interesting to see how these characters collide. It’s a safe bet that Shyamalan has more surprises in store.

The Final Wish – January 24

Co-written by Jeffrey Reddick (Final Destination) based on his story, The Final Wish stars Lin Shaye, Tony Todd, Spencer Locke, and Melissa Bolona. Shaye and Todd would be enough to pique our interest, but the plot follows a son returning home to help his grief-stricken mother after the death of his father and finds a mysterious object while going through his dad’s things. That object grants wishes, albeit in the nastiest way possible. Be careful what you wish for.

Jacob’s Ladder – (TBD)

This reboot is currently slated for February 1 release, but it’s been so quiet that I wouldn’t be surprised if it changes. Jacob’s Ladder is supposed to “honor the spirit and concept (of the original), while telling a different story.” The original followed a Vietnam vet returning from war and struggling to maintain his sanity as he’s plagued by hallucinations and surreal flashbacks. David M. Rosenthal directs the re-imagining, which stars Michael Ealy (Underworld: Awakening), Guy Burnet (“Ray Donovan”), Karla Souza (How to Get Away with Murder) and Nicole Beharie (“Sleepy Hollow”).

Piercing – February 1

Nicolas Pesce’s sophomore feature is a very different beast than his debut The Eyes of My Mother, and draws heavy influence from gialli films. Based on a novel by Ryu Murakami, it follows Reed (Christopher Abbot), a family man who decides to channel his frustrations by checking into a hotel and plotting to murder a prostitute. But when call girl Jackie (Mia Wasikowska) arrives, Reed realizes he may be in over his head. Stylish as it is twisted, and definitely violent, this is another film that makes Pesce a director to watch.

The Prodigy – February 8

A mother grows increasingly concerned about her son’s disturbing behavior and begins to believe something supernatural may be responsible. Taylor Schilling stars as mom Sarah, and It’s Jackson Robert Scott plays her son Miles. But the biggest reason The Prodigy is a horror film we can’t wait to watch? It’s directed by Nicholas McCarthy who brought us gems like The Pact and At the Devil’s Door.

St. Agatha – February 8

The latest by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, Repo! The Genetic Opera) is a period horror film set in the 1950s, and follows a pregnant unwed woman seeking shelter at an isolated convent. Unfortunately, the strict nuns are a lot more sinister than they initially appear, and Bousman revives the nunsploitation genre with nerve-fraying tension and primal rage.

Happy Death Day 2U – February 14

This sequel to 2017’s surprise hit Happy Death Day sees poor Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) getting sucked back into the vicious time loop that has her dying on repeat in order to solve who’s behind the baby-faced mask. In other words, much more fun and more Rothe letting loose as Tree, both a huge plus. Happy Death Day 2U is the perfect Valentine’s Day treat.

Climax – March 1

On paper, this plot doesn’t exactly sound like horror – a group of dancers gather together in an empty school building to rehearse and cut loose. But someone has spiked their sangria with LSD, and their night descends into a hallucinatory nightmare. I should also mention that this is written and directed by Gaspar Noe (Irreversible, Enter the Void), so it doesn’t get much more horrific than Climax. Brutal, mesmerizing, and disturbing.

The Hole in the Ground – March 1 (January 31 DirecTV)

Acquired by A24 ahead of its Sundance premiere, The Hole in the Ground will be available on January 31 for DirecTV subscribers. The rest of us will have to wait until March. This Irish horror film stars Seána Kerslake as a mother attempting to build a new life for her and her son in a rural home at the edge of a forest that happens to have a massive sinkhole. When her son disappears into the forest one night only to reappear unharmed soon after, she begins to suspect that whatever returned isn’t her son.

Us – March 22

Arguably the most anticipated film of the first quarter, Jordan Peele’s sophomore effort promises to bring the horror. Starring Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss and Tim Heidecker, Us follows a family’s vacation gone wrong when uninvited visitors arrive. What begins as a seeming home invasion film turns into something more with Peele’s The Tethered – terrifying doppelgangers of the family. This one looks intense, and new monster mythology potential is always a plus.

Pet Sematary – April 5

One of Stephen King’s scariest novels gets a new adaptation, this time by directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer (Starry Eyes). The Creed family will discover that sometimes dead is better when they move to a rural home along a dangerously busy road and tragedy strikes. Kölsch and Widmyer are serious King fans, and we can expect them to bring something new and different to the story than the 1989 adaptation. Pet Sematary stars John Lithgow, Jason Clarke, and Amy Seimetz.

Hellboy – April 12

Actor David Harbour (Stranger Things) bears the Right Hand of Doom this time, for the reboot adaptation of Mike Mignola’s beloved comic series. Directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers), expect a bloodier take on the comic character that promises to more closely align with its comic roots. Hellboy also stars Milla Jovovich, Sasha Lane, Daniel Dae Kim, and Ian McShane.

The Curse of La Llorona – April 19

This is the feature film debut by Michael Chaves, who has since been tapped to helm the next entry in The Conjuring series. It’s about time we got a major horror movie about the creepy folktale of The Weeping Woman, a ghost of a woman who lost her children and weeps while in search of them. Linda Cardellini stars as a social worker and single mother who catches the attention of La Llorona when she investigates a troubled mother suspected of child endangerment.

BrightBurn – May 24

What if Superman crashed on Earth as a baby, but wasn’t such an upstanding superhero? What if he was evil, instead? That’s the concept explored in this horror film produced by James Gunn, and co-written by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn. The film stars Elizabeth Banks, a woman so desperate for a child that she quickly assumes the role of mother when one crash lands from another planet in her backyard. She soon discovers that this alien child might not be the friendly kind.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters – May 31

Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan, and King Gidorah, all in one stunning film, as evidenced by the trailer. Do we really need anything more to be sold? Oh yeah, it’s also co-written and directed by Michael Dougherty (Krampus, Trick ‘r Treat) and boasts a cast with Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Sally Hawkins, Kyle Chandler, O’Shea Jackson Jr., David Strathairn, and so many more.

Child’s Play – June 21

At first glance, it seems the only real update in this remake is that Chucky is now Buddi, a high-tech doll for the modern era that has voice recognition, English language comprehension, and a different origin story than serial killer Charles Lee Ray. Aubrey Plaza stars as single mother Karen Barclay, who gifts the doll to her son Andy for his birthday. And if it turns out that this isn’t much more than a modern update, we still win- Don Mancini is working on a Child’s Play TV series with Chucky.

Grudge – June 21

Mark June 21 as a day for horror reimaginings, as the Takashi Shimizu horror movie about a cursed house with vengeful ghosts dooming any who enter to a violent end, is getting a new iteration. Directed by Nicolas Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother, Piercing), this iteration promises to be very different than the franchise we’re used to. Moreover, the cast is impressive; Grudge stars Andrea Riseborough (Mandy), William Sadler, Demian Bichir, Lin Shaye, Jacki Weaver, Betty Gilpin, and John Cho. This looks to be the dark horse of June 21 releases.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged – August 16

It wouldn’t be summer without a shark horror movie, and director Johannes Roberts returns for the sequel to sleeper hit 47 Meters Down. This time the plot follows five divers exploring ruins of an underwater city, and quickly discover they’re not alone in the underwater caves. If Roberts can land another terrifying scare like the flare scene in the first film, this sequel will be golden. 47 Meters Down: Uncaged stars Nia Long and John Corbett.

Annabelle 3 – June 28

Currently untitled, the latest entry in the Annabelle spinoff series brings the Warrens into the fold, as the creepy doll wreaks havoc from her display case in the Warrens’ artifact room and awakens many other evil spirits resting there. The Haunting of Hill House’s Mckenna Grace stars as Judy Warren, and Madison Iseman as Judy’s babysitter Mary Ellen. Look for Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga to reprise their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren in a smaller capacity, as well. Gary Dauberman, who penned the previous two Annabelle films, will be making his directorial debut.

The New Mutants – August 2

This film has gotten bumped back so many times that it’s plausible to happen again. Following a group of young mutants discovering their powers while held at a secret facility against their will, initial trailers indicated this would be a straight-up horror take on the superhero story. But the actual film didn’t really have much in the way of horror at all, so it was bumped for reshoots to add the horror. If it succeeds, The New Mutants could be just as exciting as the initial trailer suggested. Guess we’ll find out. Eventually.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark – August 9

Based on Alvin Schwartz’s internationally best-selling book series, the movie follows a group of young teens solving a string of murders in their town. Produced by Guillermo del Toro, who has been working to get this movie made for a while now, Andre Ovredal (The Autopsy of Jane Doe) directs from a script by Daniel Hageman, Kevin Hageman and del Toro. Between Ovredal and del Toro, we’re sold, but if they can even partially capture the essence of illustrator Stephen Gammell’s creepy artwork, we’re in for a major treat.

It: Chapter Two – September 6

The highly anticipated conclusion to 2017’s It is finally here! Set 27 years after the events of the first film, most of the Loser’s Club have grown up and moved out of Derry. But the return of It has them returning to fulfill their promise to finish It off once and for all. The young cast of the Loser’s Club returns in flashback form, while the adult Loser’s Club is played by Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Jay Ryan, Bill Hader, Isaih Mustafa, James Ransone, and Andy Bean.

Zombieland 2 – October 11

Ten years after the first film, we finally get a sequel. The core cast returns, along with original director Ruben Fleischer. This time, Wichita, Little Rock, Tallahassee, and Columbus have to contend with growing pains within their makeshift family, new survivors, and evolving zombies. The real question is – can they top the Bill Murray cameo?

Are You Afraid of the Dark? – TBD

The beloved Nickelodeon 90’s anthology show that featured a group of teens gathering around the campfire to tell each other scary stories is getting a feature film adaptation, but plot details are scarce as of now other than it’ll be a completely original story. Gary Dauberman (Annabelle) penned an earlier script, and BenDavid Grabinski wrote the most recent draft. D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) was only recently tapped to direct, so the Paramount targeted release date of October 11 can potentially change. Either way, we’re in.

Doctor Sleep – November 8

Director Mike Flanagan takes on the works of Stephen King once more, and this time it’s for the sequel to The Shining; Doctor Sleep. A now adult Danny Torrence (Ewan McGregor) meets a young girl with very powerful Shining abilities unlike anyone he’s ever met. It’s the very thing that makes her a target from the dangerous True Knot, a vampiric group that preys on children like her to remain immortal. Dan must overcome his personal demons to protect her. Look, this had us at Flanagan, who’s proved uncanny at developing literary horror masterpieces. But we also really can’t wait to delve into the world of The Shining once again. That the release date was bumped up from January 2020 to the holiday season this year is also a great sign.

In the Tall Grass – Late 2019

Based on the novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill, In the Tall Grass follows a brother and sister driving through rural Kansas on a road trip. When they stop to investigate cries for help, they find themselves lost in a field of, you guessed it, tall grass. Directed by Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice), and based on King and Hill’s story, you can expect things to get weird. The film stars Patrick Wilson and Rachel Wilson.

This highly anticipated follow up to The Devil’s Rejects is going to be a very different experience, while still reuniting fans with the surviving members of the Firefly clan. Do we really need to know anything else? Take my money now, please.

Body at Brighton Rock

Written and directed by Roxanne Benjamin (Southbound), this survival thriller follows an inexperienced park ranger as she’s stuck guarding a dead body overnight on a remote mountain trail until authorities can arrive. It causes her to confront her deepest, darkest fears.

Depraved

Written and directed by Larry Fessenden, Depraved looks to be a new, twisted take on the Frankenstein story. In it, a field surgeon suffering from PTSD makes a man out of body parts and brings him to life, but this is Fessenden at the helm, so we know there’s much more to it than meets the eye.

Eli

To be released on Netflix, Ciaran Foy (Citadel, Sinister 2) directs this supernatural story about a young boy battling an auto-immune disorder while stuck in a house that might be haunted. Eli stars Kelly Reilly, Lili Taylor, and Sadie Sink.

The Lighthouse

Robert Eggers follow up to The Witch is another period piece, this time set in 1890 Nova Scotia. It’s about an aging lighthouse keeper named Old, and stars Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. That’s really all we have to go on, other than the actors reported that their time on set was one of the most grueling experiences. So, you can bet we’re very curious.

Midsommar

What begins as a summer road trip movie for a young woman and her boyfriend turns into an absolute nightmare as the couple falls prey to a Pagan cult in Sweden. Oh yeah, and it’s Ari Aster’s immediate follow up to Hereditary. So, we want Midsommar in our eye holes immediately, please.

Rabid

A remake of David Cronenberg’s original 1977, with Sylvia Soska and Jen Soska at the helm, Rabid sees central character Rose (Laura Vandervoort) aspiring to become a fashion designer until a gruesome accident leaves her so horribly disfigured that she turns to an experimental, untested treatment. As a result, it alters her personality from shy to extroverted, but it also comes with some horrific side effects.

So how scary is The Prodigy?

“I’ll say this,” says the filmmaker with a laugh to EW. “The first time we previewed the movie, there is a section where people screamed so loud that we had to go back and re-edit the scene that followed it, because people were still recovering from what they had just seen, and they were missing the dialogue.”

This story is perfectly timed with this piece on Halloween in which director David Gordon Green revealed that the audience cheered so loudly for Judy Greer’s big line that they missed the big one from Jamie Lee Curtis.

We got the chance to speak directly with Tägtgren about the upcoming album and what fans can expect. We also got some interesting bits of information, including that there are already plans for a second album, when Rammstein will begin work on their new album, and more. How are you doing?

Good! It’s nice weather here in Berlin.

What are you in Berlin for?

We just finished up the video and we’ve been doing promotion.

The video for “Praise Abort”?

Yes, exactly.

Can you give me a hint as to what the video will be like?

Grotesque!

[laughs] Perfect! I’m very intrigued to see it!

Oh man, you will love it. It’s very sick. That’s all I can promise you.

I read that the two of you got to know each other in 1999 or 2000 and have remained in touch over the years. What spurred the two of you working together now?

We try to keep in touch via SMS or drunken phone calls to each other! [laughs] But in 2013, Till invited me to a festival in Sweden that Rammstein was headlining. When I got there, he said, “Hey, I’m going to have two years off. I want to write some music with you.” I said, “Ok! Let’s do it!” And that’s really how it started.

He was always a fan of Pain’s music. He wanted to do guest vocals on Pain songs but when I was free, he was busy and when he was free, I was busy, so it never worked out. So, finally we started to do one song, which was “Ladyboy”, and it was just like opening a funnel. The ideas just crawling out left and right and now we have 12 songs. It’s insane.

Till used only English for this album. I read that it was partially so that he didn’t have to translate lyrics for you. What were your thoughts on him using English?

I don’t miss the German, let’s put it that way. [laughs] His voice is so strong, I just think it’s genius. I know the hardcore Rammstein fans might not be happy but when he sings in English you don’t miss the German language. It sounds fucking killer. It’s really fucking amazing.

It was good because some songs that he started writing the lyrics first and I got inspired by the words. I started writing music on that. He would call me and ask what I’m doing. He told me once that he was in Canada on the Yukon River and I was, like, “What?!” And he was telling me about how he wrote lyrics for this river and how he wanted me to write a song. So, he sent me the lyrics and it inspired me to write music.

That’s the way we’ve been working together. It feels very unique. Once, he was singing into his iPhone and he sent me the file and I built music around it. That’s how we got “Praise Abort”.

It’s so fascinating that people can make music this way without being next to each other.

Yeah! We went over everything on telephone and emails for how we wanted to construct the song itself. When we finally got into the studio, after half a year of emailing and things like that, he came in and nailed four songs in 12 hours or something like that. He normally has to prep for six or seven weeks, so he was really happy.

Peter, what challenges did you face when creating the music for this project? How did you have to think differently?

It was no big deal. I mean, it kind of wrote itself. Of course I was under pressure from myself to deliver good stuff for Till since we’re working together, to make it interesting. From the beginning, we were not even supposed to do an album! We were only supposed to do one or two songs. He wanted to put it out but right away I knew and said that it’s too good to just put out there. Let’s try to write a little bit more.

There have been mentions that a second album will come out at some point. Are there already sketches and ideas for such an album or is it simply that the two of you enjoyed creating this one so much that you want to do it again?

[laughs] We’re rolling already! We were already writing stupid lyrics when we were drunk and shit. We’re going at it. We’re going to go as long as we have inspiration. Maybe it stops at five songs but at least we have half an album done, you know? It’s just so easy to write music together. No pressure. We do it because we can.

You both have such long and storied careers with your respective bands that this almost feels like a passion project, that you get to have a lot of fun.

Some people fly model planes or do puzzles with thousands of pieces. We write music, that’s our hobby. It’s what we do to get away from everything else, even though we do it professionally. When we do it, it doesn’t feel like a job. It feels passionate, like a hobby, whatever you want to call it. It’s great.

There have been talks of possible live shows. Is that something that you envision happening or is still just in talks?

We’re pretty scared, or whatever you want to call it, of how people are going to take this. We don’t know if they’re going to say, “Oh no, go back to your normal jobs!” So we really need some response from fans to see. As soon as we open up that can, we’re going to go insane with that shit.

So it all depends. If there’s not really a demand for it, maybe we’ll do a few showcases or something like that. But it won’t be full tours. I really don’t know! It’s up to the people to decide if we go out or not.

It’s really fascinating to hear you talk like this. As I said, both of you have such strong careers that it’s interesting to hear you, in a way, almost scared!

Yeah! Of course! We’ve been sitting in the studio for two years doing this, not talking to anybody. Nobody knew anything. Nobody had any sort of influence. We were just doing our own thing. And now, suddenly, we have to let it out to the public. We never thought of it like that when we did it. We were just thinking about the pure passion, just writing and seeing how it came together. And now, when it’s too late, we start thinking, “Was this the best we could do?”

Having heard the album several times now, I think fans of both of you will be very pleased with the final product.

I hope so! [laughs] It definitely won’t kill our other careers but we have so much passion about it for the last two years. It’s not too far from what we do in our normal lives. It’s a party album! I see it as a 2015 Billy Idol kinda thing, except the lyrics are more ironic and funny. It’s good music to pre-party to before you go out to the bar.

The lyrics are, as you say, very funny but also very shocking.

That’s Till! I don’t want to crawl in his brain and see what he’s thinking about! [laughs] For him, he was so inspired by the writing and singing in a new language. He said that it was like picking fucking cherries from the tree. The German tree was already hard to reinvent. He came from East Germany, where it was very difficult, because of Communism, to learn English. So, for him, it’s still very new. He’s a very social person. When he goes out on tour, he’s the last person to go to bed. And he loves to talk, so when Rammstein went out of Germany, he learned a lot of English. For him, it’s like a new beginning.

Both of you are parts of bands that often have very strong connections to the horror genre, either through visuals or through lyrical content. What do you think it is about your bands that draw such a connection?

I can tell you one secret: Till’s hero is Alice Cooper. His first album was ‘Welcome To My Nightmare’. Till really loves this horror thing that Cooper did in the 70’s. He’s always telling me how big of an inspiration he is.

If you listen to this Lindemann album, it’s really spooky, but in a funny way! When it comes to other bands I work with, I wonder if metal is spooky anymore. I know that it used to be. I grew up with KISS, which was scary as a kid.

I always like to ask this question: If you could get a famed horror director to make a music video for one of your songs, who would you like to have do it?

Actually, we were supposed to do the first video with Jonas Åkerlund, the director of The Prodigy’s “Smack My Bitch Up”. We were supposed to shoot it in LA but he had to go to Argentina to shoot some video, so we shot “Praise Abort” with the director of several Rammstein videos. He and Till really click, so when we told him that we don’t want to do anything similar to Pain or Rammstein, he pushed the envelope in a completely different way.

What’s next for each of you? What projects do you see yourself working on next?

I think we’re going to keep on writing! Till is going to go back to Rammstein in September to begin pre-production stuff and he says that it usually takes two years from when they start until the album is done.

For me, I don’t know! I have no clue! As soon as all the promotion is over, I’m going to sit down and then think if I should do another Pain album? Another Hypocrisy album? Or should I keep writing for Lindemann? Right now, I have so many ideas for the Lindemann project.

It seems like you have a great deal of freedom that you have all these opportunities available to you.

Yes! Of course, now it’s going to change because people will hear the album. Before, no one heard the music so we had the free way of writing. But we will keep writing and if we like what we write, we’ll keep it. We will never put any rules onto how Lindemann should sound because I think it takes two to three albums before you really know what you’re doing with a band.

Any last thoughts you want to send to readers and listeners?

Yeah. The lyrics? Read between the lines and find the irony. Don’t think it’s all so serious. For us, it’s not to provoke. Yes, we want to shock people but, like I said, it’s a party album. Enjoy it and have a good time!

We got the opportunity to speak with composer/keyboardist/programmer/all around wizard Liam Howlett, who founded the group in 1990, to discuss the band and their current plans, the kind of horror movie he’d like to score, the infamously controversial “Smack My Bitch Up” music video, and which horror director he’d like to see create a video for one of their tracks! The first three full length albums had relatively short amounts of time between their release dates. Then, there was suddenly a seven year gap and each new album took quite a while. Apart from the band breaking up, what else would you say was the reason for the longer delays in between albums?

Yo, yes you are right! I must admit I never noticed, time flies when you’re having fun!

‘The Day Is My Enemy’ has received high acclaim, with many critics hailing it as “a return to form” and the best album, “…since The ‘Fat of the Land'”. Did this take you by surprise, considering that the two albums prior received somewhat more mixed reviews?

I never read the reviews. All we know is we are real happy with this album and I think the album and the live performance of it have totally aligned. It feels solid all the way through. It carries what we have been about but without sounding retro or nostalgic.

The album feels very angry and aggressive, more so than usual. Where did this energy, this emotion come from?

It’s just the way it came out naturally. It’s a reaction to what went on in the band internally and around us, and we felt the need for it to be more violent sounding in order to draw the line clearly from a lot of other shite that is out there.

The electronic music sound has seeped into pop music and hip hop, so it was important for us as a band to represent the more abrasive end of electronic music.

We feel it should be a band and not a DJ out there.

It was six years between ‘Invaders Must Die’ and ‘The Day Is My Enemy’. Do you anticipate that fans will have to endure another long wait before another album or are plans already in motion for the next chapter of The Prodigy?

In an interview with The Guardian, you spoke very strong about, “…mindless fucking jokers that arrive in their Learjets, pull a USB stick out of their pockets, plug it in and wave their hands in the air to a pre-programmed mix.” Unfortunately, it seems that more and more these days the music comes well before the performance and the artist, which surprises me as the artist should be defined by their music. What, in your opinion, can be done to wake people up to the mediocrity they are embracing so passionately?

I’ve got nothing against Learjets. I’ll get in one if it’s offered, trust me!

There are still good things going on and good music getting written, so we live in hope that some producer pops up with a game changing record that can wake people up. If it doesn’t happen then it deserves to eat itself into mediocrity.

It’s the laziness I can’t stand. Any fool can operate an iPod.

I want to discuss the music video for “Smack My Bitch Up”, which is still the subject of controversy. In my opinion, it’s a wickedly smart video that subverts stereotypes and plays around with expectations, especially with the ending. Looking back at that video, what thoughts run through your head? What do you think of all the discussion it brought up?

Is it still controversial? Really? In 2015? I don’t think so. It’s just a great video. It has bold energy, violence, humour, and it’s a trip. I loved the people discussing and debating it because it just made it more popular. We wanted to push the boundaries and take the piss at the censorship laws that were being enforced at the time.

The ending was my idea. I’m taking credit for that.

I want to change subjects to the topic of horror. Most people associate metal and horror together. However, The Prodigy has appeared on the soundtracks to ‘House Of Wax’ and ‘The Unborn’, both very different styles of horror movies. I personally feel that electronic music can be just as aggressive, exhilarating, and vicious as metal, making it perfect for horror movies. If you were offered the chance to score a horror movie, what kind of film would you want it to be?

Yes, I would really love to score a horror film. It would have to be independent and I’d have to work with the director closely.

The type of horror would be a mixture of old school Halloween mixed with ‘The Chase’ and danger of, say, ’28 Days Later’ with the intenseness of ‘The Babadook’.

Speaking of horror, have you got any favorite horror movies?

I haven’t seen anything that really freaked me out lately. The last time I was scared, I think, was when the first ‘Paranormal Activity’ came out. That stayed with me for a bit.

I saw ‘Wolf Creek 2’ the other day and that was kinda amusing but a great film nonetheless.

If you could have a horror director write and direct a music video for you, which director would you want to direct which song?

Eli Roth, please! We actually chatted the other day. Not about directing, unfortunately, but he can choose any of our tunes he wants. His level of sickness is appreciated!

Coming back to the band, what do you have in store for the future?

Right now, it’s all about playing the new album live. So, we are on the road doing gigs and festivals. Lovin’ it! It’s what The Prodigy is here for.
