Director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) is now in production on Seance on a Wet Afternoon, a new adaptation of Mark McShane’s 1961 novel.

Rachel Weisz (The Mummy), Matthew Macfadyen (“Succession”), and Joe Alwyn (The Favourite) will star.

Shooting in the UK, the dramatic crime thriller is written by Emmy-winning “Adolescence” co-creator Jack Thorne.

It follows Myra, a self-proclaimed medium who convinces her husband Billy to kidnap the son of a wealthy family so she can lead the police to the ‘missing’ child and legitimize her psychic abilities. When Myra’s true intentions come to light, however, Billy realizes her plan threatens to consume them both.

The crew includes cinematographer Marcell Rév (“Euphoria”), production designer Jacqueline Abrahams (The Lobster), costume designer Sarah Blenkinsop (The Lobster), hair and make-up designer Daniel Phillips (No Time to Die), and casting director Jina Jay (“Black Mirror”).

The film is produced by Weisz & Polly Stokes for Astral Projection, Ed Guiney & Andrew Lowe for Element Pictures, and Robyn Slovo. Executive producers include Thorne, Macfadyen, Farhana Bhul, and David Kimbangi. Film4 and Fremantle financed.

FilmNation Entertainment is handling international sales, with UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance handling domestic rights.

Bryan Forbes previously helmed a 1964 adaptation of Seance on a Wet Afternoon starring Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough. It also spawned the Japanese horror film Seance in 2000 and an opera in 2009.

Kill Your Bullies

We’ve been bouncing around the decades ever since we wrapped up our ‘Underseen or Underrated’ theme, with stops in 1960 London for Peeping Tom, 2010’s boobies and blood Piranha 3D and 1987’s Near Dark last week. Our unofficial vampire double bill continues this week with Swedish adaptation Let the Right One In, which brings us back to childhood bullying, as well as a slightly murky trans narrative.

In the film, shy outcast Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant) befriends reluctant neighbor Eli (Lina Leandersson) who has a combative relationship with their “father” Håkan (Per Ragnar). As Oskar suffers horrible bullying from his classmates, Eli encourages him to fight back, even as they themselves struggle with some unnatural bloody urges. As the bodies begin to pile up, it’s unclear if these “kids” are in a love story or a slowly unfurling tragedy.

Episode 173 – Let The Right One In (2008)

It’s time for another gorgeous vampire film as we finally tackle Tomas Alfredson’s Let The Right One In (2008). Along for the ride is The Beauty of Horror‘s Chandler Bullock, who connects deeply with the depiction of bullying in the film. Expect all three of us to get very candid!

In addition to bullying, we unpack a multiplicity of trans readings for Eli, the eternal 12-year-old vampire, as well as debate at length whether the end of the film is a tragedy, a love story, or both.

Plus: Trace’s thirst for child blood, Chandler and Trace’s take on the stage production, a missed Oscar opportunity and Joe fills in the gaps between the book, the Swedish film and its American remake (for a lot more on that, check out his YA adaptation podcast Hazel & Katniss & Harry & Starr which did a tie-in episode)

It’s Se7en meets Silence of the Lambs in the trailer for The Snowman, a terrifying thriller from director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), based on Jo Nesbø’s global bestseller.

Michael Fassbender (Prometheus, X-Men series), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation), Charlotte Gainsbourg (Independence Day: Resurgence), Val Kilmer(Heat) and Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) star in the film that looks insanely dark and violent.

In the film, “When an elite crime squad’s lead detective (Fassbender) investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter, he fears an elusive serial killer may be active again.  With the help of a brilliant recruit (Ferguson), the cop must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one if he hopes to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall.”

Here’s the gruesome first trailer for The Snowman, who begins his killing spree October 20th.

*UPDATE: We’ve just been informed this is fan-made, but it should hold you over until we get the real one!*

Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson impressed the hell out of me with 2008’s Let the Right One In, which is unquestionably one of the best vampire movies ever made. It’s been six years since Alfredson has directed a movie, but he returns this year with crime thriller The Snowman. Michael Fassbender stars in the film, an adaptation of Jo Nesbo’s same-named novel.

It’s set for release on October 13th, and we’ve got the poster art for ya today.

In the film, penned by Hossein Amini and Matthew Michael Carnahan…

Detective Harry Hole investigates the disappearance of a woman whose pink scarf is found wrapped around an ominous-looking snowman.

The impressive cast also includes Rebecca Ferguson, Val Kilmer, Chloe Sevigny, J.K. Simmons, Toby Jones, James D’Arcy, and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

The term “art” can be used to define a great many things. After all, many people refer to a piece of music as “a work of art”. Movies and TV shows can be done in such a manner as to be seen as incredibly artistic. It’s not just paintings, statues, sculptures, etc… that get to bear the descriptor of “art”.

That’s how Rhys Fulber of Conjure One has presented this fantastic list for us. By compiling the “Top 10 Most Disturbing Or Horrific Pieces Of Art”, Fulber has shown that art transcends the canvas and leaps out into other amazing platforms. That being said, there are still some truly wonderful paintings ahead for you to enjoy!
