RELEASE: 27 May 2015

This is one series that has been thoroughly crafted and designed from the concept to this final issue. The power Divinity has put on display is truly frightening and innovative at the same time. Writer Matt Kindt seems to have only scratched the surface with the potential Abram Adams displayed so far. Unity, the Valiant Universe’s top team, were initially swept away with minimal effort by Divinity. The skillful way that both sides walk away from this tilt without looking weak is an attack through his heart. Readers finally see how human and delicate even all-powerful characters can be.

Once again, artist Trevor Hairsine conveys heart, menace and scope effortlessly in this final chapter. The emotion shown in Abrams’ family reunion. The ache in the eyes and aged faces. The spectacle of battling four of the most dangerous characters at once. The futility of the actions taken. It’s all so striking to look at.

Thankfully, there are lasting repercussions coming out of this series. No one lost but no one really won either. Divinity let his foes think they won the day. Not only those, but the followers of Divinity are rising so the imagination begins to wonder how much power will the people have without their leader? Again, this series makes you think about so many different things all at the same time every time you read and re-read it.

The extra pages and insight from writer Kindt at the end of the story only enhance the overall experience of the entire miniseries. We are assured that there is more Divinity to come this year which is magnificent news. I’m eager to see how this mighty character will interact with the other power players touring around the Valiant Universe. This series established something new, potent and potentially dangerous into their world. I can’t wait to see where they take him next.

RELEASE: 22 April 2015

First up is Ivar, Timewalker #4, written by Fred Van Lente and art by Clayton Henry. Once again, writer Van Lente takes something as tried and tested as time travel and makes a story so utterly unique that it will baffle and amaze you until the end. Henry’s art, as always, impresses with its duality of simplicity in line work but combined with superb detailing. The main character, Ivar, is scarcely in this issue at all. His would becohort, Neela, sets out to prove she can change history and the outcome is one remarkable and troublesome lesson to learn.

Second on our list (in no particular order because all these books are impressive) is Ninjak #2, written by Matt Kindt and art by Clay Mann and Butch Guice. This is a smooth, suave ninja / spy thriller of a series and it’s only the second issue! There are so many minute details spread all over this series, from the introduction / recap page at the start to the sly maneuvering in front and behind of his foes to the back-up new spy tales by the great Butch Guice. The story moves nice and quick and slick enough to pay attention and re-read it again to see how the past and present of Ninjak are all playing into one another.

Thirdly, we have Divinity #3, written (again) by Matt Kindt and art by Trevor Hairsine. The would-be Omni-powerful cosmonaut takes on Unity, all of the mightiest warriors the Valiant Universe can dish out to neutralize the uncertainty he represents. Kindt in one instance takes a typical fight and makes it into a multi-layered and fascinating look at how power can be used to eliminate adversaries without throwing a punch. Riveting work. Catch up if you aren’t up to speed to see how breathtaking the art by Hairsine has been so far.

I normally would expand elaborate how each of these titles is worth your attention. I think if you want to try this shared comic book universe out, any of the Valiant Next books are exceptional gateways into this refreshing world. Each book is so utterly different from the other and yet the greatest thing they all share in common is that they are great reads. Pick them up and catch up to the Valiant Universe.

RELEASE: 18 March 2015

Abram Adams has travelled farther than any other human and become something much more in the process. There seems to be nothing he cannot do now that he has returned to his home world. Can this much power in one person ever end well? For once, I want it to. Writer Matt Kindt has really made this made-made-God tale so compelling already that I want to see how far he’s going to push things before the inevitable break.

Trevor Hairsine’s art is helping in spades to show how cool this journey is to behold. Describing out loud how some people’s deepest desires manifest in this story could sound ridiculous. However, thanks to Hairsine’s art, you can still see the humanity where now only pure animal instincts remain. Flying, for example, has never looked so utterly poignant until you see the ‘Sergeant’, Divinity’s would attacker last issue, take flight.

This has so far been a refreshing take on the benevolent god making utopia on Earth. I’ve been very impressed with how Kindt and Hairsine’s arc and really want to see how things progress with each page. The fact that Unity, the MI-6’s elite tactical team and Valiant Universe’s team supreme, are entering the fray only adds to the anticipation I have for next month. Pick up this series and see how much change is coming, whether Earth is ready or not.

If your life feels like destiny heading towards the inevitable, what does that mean? Are you meant for big, world changing things? Do you know exactly what you’re supposed to do? If your dream becomes your reality, how can you possibly rejoin the rest of us on Earth? There are so many mind-fluxing concepts and ideas in Matt Kindt’s debut of Valiant Next’s newest character it takes some time for it all to sink in. After re-reading this mind-bender of a first issue, it feels like page one of a self-fulfilling prophecy. That makes it one of the more distinctive introductions I’ve read ever.

The visuals of this new god on Earth named Abram Adams are deftly handled by Trevor Hairsine and Ryan Winn. Hairsine and Winn make everything look as real or as surreal as it needs to be without going over the top anywhere. Abrams’ imagination comes through the pages as genuine wonder. What he does when he gets back to our planet looks like whatever he can think of becomes reality. This makes him a brand new powder keg in the ever-growing Valiant Universe. I can’t wait to see how the rest of this world reacts to his arrival.

Like Ivar, Timewalker and Imperium before it, Divinity #1 comes out of the gates strong. All of these debuts from the Valiant Next line have been very compelling reads indeed. Get a copy of this first issue (Prestige Format for regular price ta boot!) and let your mind bend to this new deity on Earth.

As a new reader to the Valiant Universe, I couldn’t be happier with the Valiant NEXT initiative. It’s mainly interested in providing readers with several new jumping on points, beginning with December’s “The Valiant” and continuing through February with the launch of “Divinity” #1 from Matt Kindt and Trevor Hairsine.

Having read “The Valiant” #1 I can assure you it’s a sweeping epic that perfectly balances a large team against the stellar art of Paolo Rivera. I was blown away by how easily it introduced me to Valiant’s world and held my hand through the eyes of a character who is also new to this world. Without spoiling anything, I urge you to buy it in December.

“Divinity” looks to be no different. It’s the story of a man sent further into the cosmos than ever before. He survived and he encountered something that changed him forever. Trevor Hairsine’s pencils show an incredibly detailed world that should easily impress. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see what Valiant has got NEXT.

Valiant is proud to present your first look inside DIVINITY #1 (of 4) – the new, prestige format VALIANT NEXT limited series from New York Times best-selling writer Matt Kindt (THE VALIANT, Mind MGMT) and blockbuster artist Trevor Hairsine (X-Men: Deadly Genesis)! On February 11th, don’t miss the first appearance of Valiant’s first major new character as DIVINITY descends on planet Earth!

At the height of the Cold War, the Soviet Union – determined to win the Space Race at any cost – green lit a dangerously advanced mission. They sent a man farther into the cosmos than anyone has gone before or since. Lost in the stars, he encountered something unknown. Something that…changed him.

Long thought lost and erased from the history books, he has suddenly returned, crash-landing in the Australian Outback. The few that have been able to reach him believe him to be a deity – one who turned the scorched desert into a lush oasis. They say he can bend matter, space, and even time to his will. Earth is about to meet a new god. And he’s a communist.

How long can it be before the first confrontation between mankind and DIVINITY begins? Find out here as Valiant superstars Matt Kindt and Trevor Hairsine deliver a shocking vision of 21st century science fiction in DIVINITY #1 (of 4) – the next epic series from the VALIANT NEXT initiative in stores February 11th!

Beginning with THE VALIANT #1 (of 4) on December 10th, don’t miss each exciting title fromVALIANT NEXT – a brand new wave of ongoing series and prestige format projects from some of the premier creative talents in comics today. Beginning with THE VALIANT #1 (of 4) by superstar creators Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt, and Paolo Rivera in December, VALIANT NEXT continues with five blockbuster new series in 2015:

  • IVAR, TIMEWALKER #1 by Fred Van Lente and Clayton Henry in January
  • DIVINITY #1 (of 4) by Matt Kindt and Trevor Hairsine in February
  • IMPERIUM #1 by Joshua Dysart and Doug Braithwaite in February
  • NINJAK #1 by Matt Kindt and Clay Mann in March
  • BLOODSHOT REBORN #1 by Jeff Lemire and Mico Suayan in April

Following the critically acclaimed, smash-hit success of VALIANT FIRST in 2014, VALIANT NEXT will present six new starting points perfect for readers new and old. Featuring an exciting selection of new series starring Valiant’s biggest, most-demanded heroes alongside all-new, never-before-seen characters, VALIANT NEXT is the NEXT epic evolution of Valiant’s best-selling, fan-favorite publishing line.

One of the best things about the re-launch of the Valiant universe is that readers have become passionate about characters that they might not have previously had an affinity for. While “Eternal Warrior” did have a 50-issue run under the old Valiant banner, the book failed to generate the excitement that the character truly deserved. That is all about to change with “Eternal Warrior” #1, as Greg Pak and Trevor Hairsine deliver a powerful debut issue for the re-launch of this character.

WRITTEN BY: Greg Pak
ART BY: Trevor Hairsine
PUBLISHER: Valiant Comics
PRICE: $3.99
RELEASE: September 11th, 2013

Writer Greg Pak truly elevates the “Eternal Warrior” to new heights and makes the title more than just another warrior’s tale. Here he takes the violent swordplay of “300” and fused it with the stunning complexity of Game of Thrones. Pak does a great job of incorporating all the mythology Gilad Anni-Padda’s immortality in with all big sweeping action sequences. Here we get to see Gilad rise up into the role of a true leader as he leads his team of warriors into battle against the Lord of Darkness, Negral. Pak also lays the groundwork for future issues here right out of the gate by setting the stage for the conflict between Eternal Warrior and his daughter.

Artist Trevor Hairsine is perfectly suited to draw a book like “Eternal Warrior”. His hyper detailed artwork has maximum impact in this issue, as Hairsine is hacking-and-slashing through violent action scenes. Hairsine also nails the emotional moments here, as you seen the pain in Gilad Anni-Padda’s eyes when his loved ones ripped from him during the throes of war. Overall this is the best artwork that Hairsine has done for Valiant yet.

Valiant has done it again by reviving a classic character in “Eternal Warrior” and giving it a modern twist to make it relevant to today readers. “Eternal Warrior” is packed with enough fast paced action, plot twists, and sword-swinging to keep readers hungry for the next issue.
