I'm going to need a re-watch. I liked it but the hype kind of killed it somewhat for me. It's definitely unsettling and I like slow burns so I'm down to check it out again. I must say the final act is nuts.
It's not masquerading as horror at all. It's very much a horror film. It's a slow burn with a lot of dread and unease. Think The Witch with a few shades of The Conjuring thrown in that deals with grief and loss that builds to a crazy climax.
It's absolutely a horror film. It was in my head that night when I was going to bed, I had no trouble sleeping but it had that effect movies like Sinister have on me late at night, had my wife seen this film I honestly don't think she would have slept for two days.
It focuses on atmosphere, and has some imagery that is down right frightening.
Wow. This was one hell of a film. It shifts gears several times, keeping you guessing what type of story it really is, and is terrifically written, acted and filmed. Definitely one that will require multiple viewings to grasp everything that's in there. I'm still trying to figure out exactly what the two predominant colors, cyan and red, represent, though my preliminary belief is cyan is used in everything that leads to the paranormal and red is symbolic of a warning.
Good but not great. Enjoyed the performances and atmosphere, but parts of the plot were too derivative of Rosemary's Baby. One crucial scene is almost a duplicate, so imitative that I had to resist the urge to laugh at the screen (out of politeness to my fellow moviegoers). Other than that it was okay.
I love the way you sing, okay? I fucked up my whole life because of the way you sing. - Before Midnight
Watched it with the girlfriend last night and we have been waiting a while for this one, Its a really good watch apart from just a few things. I dont mind when a film is slow burning but this film sometimes takes the piss with it i found myself nodding off in some of the scenes where there was no dread or suspense building it was just taking forever to get to the next scene. I love the piggy in the middle feeling of the story jumping from different directions wanting to make you believe its this kind of story, no its not actually its this, hold your horses its actually about this. but that all fell apart at the end, Not going to spoil anything but that ending just died a slow miserable death.
I loved the deliberate, slow pace. It was never boring. When I wasn't being creeped out, I was invested in the family dynamics, or the way Aster was choosing to frame the shot. There was always something to sustain me.
Watched it again last night and I think this is a straight up masterpiece. So much going on in every single scene when you go looking for it.
There were at least two scenes of "fuck all" in the movie, after the dinner scene and the scene where the husband denounced her beliefs which used 30 seconds to a minute of dead air where nothing was being build up and any comments on the shit ending?
At least two scenes of "fuck all" in the movie. I mean, considering how much of a drag this was for you, I half expected you to say more than two.
Oh yeah, the infamous "after the dinner scene scene". Be more specific.
The husband refuting her claims? Why is that a pointless scene? Is that not an entirely logical thing for his character to do, given that she has been behaving erratically and until that point the only "supernatural" thing he had witnessed was a glass moving across the table. I don't really see your point.
I'm cool with you not liking it at all, but blanket statements like "shit ending" with no explanation I can't abide. That ending was foreshadowed throughout the whole movie. It was bonkers, but all of the groundwork was laid before that it didn't come out of the left field.
Okay well here you go; the "after the dinner" scene hung on for a little too long for my liking when Peter stormed off making me think he was coming back into the scene to say his peace but didn't it just hung on there for "fuck all"
there was about 2 minutes of the husband and wife walking from the attic entrance to the iiving room where neither of them said "fuck all" it actually felt like Wes Anderson fancied doing horror. \i\ get some people love artistic but dont try to sell me long shots of "fuck all" because you this it make.s me feel this mood cause it never did. Now let me bring up The Guest which was a little shorter than this movie but used the "slow burn" method well. Two scenes which did do as explained where the scene with David at alone in his room looking unnatural as the score played and that long scene where David loaded the gun as the arms dealer was running from him. think i made my point on that and it's creative useage
And as for the ending? are you so pissed that i dont like it because it was a "Masterpiece" which by the way is a shit word to use in this genre because in about 2-3 years people will be using that to describe something equally as redundant. The ending made sense in a very unsatisfying way compared to what i felt the movie was leading to was rapture-like comparisons but it led to naked fuckers in a tree house saying "you are king"
So you're just not a fan of long shots then? Why explore the negative space/impact of a character who storms out of shot for a moment or two when you can smash cut to the next thing and the next thing so folks without an attention span can keep their eyes open.
Masterpiece is a great word, and I so seldom use it to describe a horror movie, so it's high praise in this case
"Rapture-like comparisons" what movie were you watching dude? What does that even mean? The ending is literally sign-posted through the entire goddamn movie and if you missed that or had ridiculous expectations of some life-altering ending then that's on you...
If I had one complaint about the ending it would be Joan literally telling Peter "you are now King Paimon" when it didn't really need to be spelled out like that. Other than that - perfect ending.

Jury. Executioner. Judge.
