    @TexasSnacks

The last time we saw Leia was 30 years ago, and that was during a time she recently discovered she was Luke's brother. It is only logical to assume that during the 30 years (especially with Luke becoming one to train Jedi's) that she would grow strong with the force and even possibly learn some neat tricks.

Seeing her do this only makes more sense in having her the leader of the Rebellion to begin with. Originally when I saw her leading the Rebels in Force Awakens I couldn't help but feel like it was forced fanfiction, her using the force changes that if you ask me. Either way, considering how far she has lead them, it's not crazy to assume she has also been having the force guide her.

It's definitely a odd ball scene when it first happens, I chuckled a bit myself, but the unjustified hate it's receiving? Especially when these so called Star Wars fans start bringing up the laws of physics and dare tell us that "It's impossible to live a second in outer space!" LORD ALMIGHTY ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!? Star Wars fans are NOW bringing up physics and yet ignore the fact that Light Speed is an EXTREMELY inefficient and SLOW form of travel in space!? Star Wars is a Space Fantasy/Opera first, a science fiction second.

@Glass Eater I hear ya. It just seemed odd like you said. I hadn’t heard the crap about physics and what not. That does sound absurd when talking about a SW movie. I just would have liked it more if she had died in that moment. Would have made an impact and more of a reason for Ren to to do what he does later in the film.
  • @TexasSnacks Yeah I agree in the decision in having her die this movie. I think that threw all of us in a loop.. Are they going to do a CGI Leia in the next movie? But to be fair on Kylo's part in your comment, he did think she was dead for almost all of the movie.
  • @Glass Eater

I completely agree. The fanbase bitching about logic in a movie called "STAR WARS" is fucking retarded. This is a franchise where so much illogical shit happens, because it's FICTION is downright pathetic, and the fact that they're only bringing up shit now, when this franchise has been going for 40 years now makes me want to bang my head into the wall.

It's a space fantasy movie FFS!!

I’m no Star Wars expert but didn’t Luke mind communicate with Leia in Empire at the end? That’s a Force skill right? If that’s the case she’s always had Force powers but maybe didn’t use them or harness their full power back then.

  • She shouldn't need Force powers to hear him, or it would be odd that he tried to contact her at all. tho being his sister, reaching like that, he should have the easiest time reaching her over Chewbacca

i absolutely fucking adored it. seen it twice, loved it as much the second time as the first. i loved the scene with leia; it was one of many moments a tear came to my eye. carrie fisher was absolutely wonderful. and mark fucking hamill? genius. i loved him. he had that perfect world-weary wit that made him the perfect mix between has-been and total ass-kicker. the humor landed perfectly for me, and i LOVED the tension between rey and ben. and as far as casino world goes, i liked this statement, that sometimes being a hero is about trying, regardless of the outcome. i loved fin and rose, and this, combined with poe's lessons in what's really important really balanced the movie for me. it's preliminary ranking is number three, behind empire and new hope.
  • @nance great analysis
  • For the first time in my life I was bored watching a new "Star Wars" film. I was actually thinking about things I had to do around the house while I was watching this piece of shit. I'm not going to point out all the obvious things people have been talking about. One part though I thought was hilariously bad filmmaking was when Phasma & some Storm Troopers were walking in unison towards the camera mere seconds after the entire environment they were in was engulfed by explosions. And it was played to be dramatic =) I have zero interest in rewatching this nor do I have any interest in the next installment. Shocking how bad this turned out.

just goes to show different strokes for different folks and all that. i'm not debating that you found it boring hag, just that i was...entranced both times. i can't wait to see it again.
  • So whether you like it or not, it seems that the negative backlash is seriously damaging this movie's box office aspirations. I know, 2nd largest opening weekend of all time and what's sure to be at least a billion dollar picture, doesn't seem all that bad. But the thing you have to consider in the current franchise heavy climate is that big numbers are becoming the norm, and there's a difference between big numbers and strong numbers. There's several reasons for concern here. 69% drop in it's 2nd weekend? Boy. Almost a 50% drop globally between Force Awakens and this one? That is really, really bad. This whole situation reeks of BvS and what's happening in the DCEU right now. If I were Kathleen Kennedy and the folks over at Disney, I'd be regrouping to seriously re-strategize the immediate future of the franchise. And I'd start by desaturating the movie landscape of Star Wars altogether for a while. Look, I get it... it's an insanely lucrative brand and so adored by so many, but these movies should be an event - not something we should just come to expect every single year for the foreseeable future.

Box office drops. Who cares. It's about to pass the billion dollar mark and be the 2nd highest grossing movie of the year. It still needs to open in China and that will boost it even more.

I really hate this day and age of cinema-going now that it's all about the Tomatometer, opening weekend numbers etc, drop offs etc. It's bullshit.

Why can't people just enjoy movies?

I'm off to see it for a fourth time tomorrow.

Lower box office numbers for this specific film won't hurt this franchise. The only thing that will is fatigue in having Disney pump 50 Star Wars movies out in the next 10 years. Sometimes a break is ok, but we will just have to wait and see.

This is the first Star Wars I have seen twice in theaters. Honestly my ONLY FUCKING issue is the stupid fucking subplot with Fin and Rose. Otherwise Rey, Ren, and especially LUKE are down right excellent in this film. The movie is great, and the negative hate it's getting can be summed up completely in this meme:

  • It would be impossible to sustain Force Awakens numbers. Yearly numbers are always going to drop.

@Glass Eater I completely agree. I'm off to see it for a fourth time today. My only issue is what you mentioned. I think everything else around that is great. In regards to Luke, it's been 30 years since we've seen his character. I lot can happen to a person over that amount of time to completely change their attitude and outlook on life.

The only problem this franchise is facing is fatigue because Disney wants to pump out one movie every year, however in saying that, look at how many Marvel movies come out. If they keep employing good writers and directors they should have no problem.

@Se7en Exactly. What TFA had going for it was the anticipation of a new SW movie after 10 years. TFA has plenty of detractors so I doubt that they wouldn't have been bothered to turn out to see TLJ.

What people seem to forget is that at their core, these are kids movies. The adults who grew up with SW might now be jaded and disappointed with the franchise, but if I were a kid now discovering SW for the first time I'd be completely in love with these new films. Wel, I still am. I haven't forgotten the wonder of just being swept along by a film, especially a science fiction fantasy.
  • I'm not some stickler for Box Office being the be-all end-all, but you have to accept that it is the driving force of these movies and Hollywood as a whole. Star Wars is a business, with a vast ancillary and merchandising market and at this point the films are just sort of one piece of the engine that keeps this thing rolling. And the reason such a sizeable decline IS important to think about is that it is ultimately going to have some effect on the future movies. Kathleen Kennedy is a steely, merciless woman, there is no way she is not disappointed by the results. And she pretty much has carte blanche over the entire SW cinematic universe right now, so how she reacts will obviously affect the next movie.

I don't think people understand how much money influences almost every aspect of Hollywood mainstream filmmaking. This shit matters, whether you like it or not.

When I went to see it, I was expecting a huge crowd like the last two movies on opening weekend. There was maybe 20 - 30 people tops to see The Last Jedi during the showing I was at on opening weekend.

There's been so many years of lore building up through books, comics, etc. That Walt Disney just says, "Fuck it, we own this shit now!". Even though I was entertained, but I can't help but be some what critical at the same time. I don't want to be too critical, until the next installment comes out, and how this one flows into it.
  • This hasn't permanently damaged the franchise, no, I can agree with that. But it's definitely a warning sign. I think what it shows more than anything is that fans have so much more power nowadays which Disney obviously underestimated. They probably thought this would blow the records away, but the insistence of fans on not doing repeat viewings has meant the movie is not nearly as successful as they had hoped. The same happened with the DCEU and BvS/Justice League situation, fans have ultimately killed the DCEU (as it has existed since Man of Steel) and now they have no option but to change it up completely. Disney need to be very careful that they don't have a disaster like that on their hands going forward. I think the Han Solo movie could be crucial if it does some brand erosion though.

There's a lesson here. Don't underestimate even the biggest of fans. They will kill your fucking movie.

  • @Atmosphere I do agree with what you say about Disney underestimating the fans, especially in this day and age of social media, but what do you do?

They just can't be pleased. They cried that TFA was too similar to the OT and now cry that TLJ is too different. There's no winning no matter what Disney do.
