Dune (Remake)

Any other Dune fans out there? I remember watching Dune (1984) when I was a kid and loving it but as I got older I thought it could have been so much better, bigger and longer. When I first read the book, I definitely wanted a remake and possible trilogy. Looks like I'm finally getting my wish and seems to be in good hands! (SyFy's attempt was decent but lacked the budget needed for this property.)

Here's some info for those who haven't heard much about the remake. I'm even more stoked that Denis Villeneuve is directing.

Apparently there will also be a TV series. Wonder it will connect to the movies if at all?

I'll try to update when any more news breaks about the film. Feel free to share any info you hear as well.

Tried to reading the book many times, never could get very far, all the pointless flavor words kill it ever time

Saw the the original movie, 95% of it is mind numbingly boring as hell and the whole thing feels like it's 10 hours too long, all this even more so if you watch the director's cut

    It was the cow...

Apparently, Villenevue was in talks to do the next Bond and decided to do Dune next which is exciting. James Bond Sucks anyways.

The original is definitely dated. Going back to watch it is very rough.

With what Villienvue has done with films like Arrival, Blade Runner, Prisoners and Sicario, I feel this is in good hands and people who aren't fans or haven't even heard of Dune will enjoy it.

There is so much in the books that there is no way to fit everything into one movie. Looks like this will be a trilogy.
  • I haven't seen Dune but I've been meaning to watch Jodorowsky's Dune.

@Midnight-Kroovy Same here. It's been in my queue for ever. Currently 120 so it'll be a while longer.

Dune was released when I was in high school and I can remember there being a slight buzz about it, but not enough for me to run out and see it.
  • UMMMMMMMMMMMM WOW

ok. thought Denis was taking a break for a bit. he's called it the project of his life and has been haunted by images from the book since he was like 12.

    Watch Jodorowsky's Dune you fools.
  • Love the book, but Lynch's film didn't do much for me. Love both Arrival and Blade Runner 2049, so this could be another slam dunk.

Not really an update but just something to look forward to. Definitely would like a more adult Star Wars without the goofy shit.

“The goal is to make two films, maybe more.” More would be better. Trilogy is best imo.

i love lynch's dune; he totally nails the drug-fevered madness and scope of the novel (which is fucking brilliant, btw, possibly the greatest novel i've ever read), as well as the character's voices, especially their inner voices. if i have any issue with it, it's simply that he bit off too much for one movie. without know;edge of the book, it's probably hard to have any fucking clue what's going on, it's edited so randomly. it should have been a minimum of two movies. the mini-series had the time to cover all the bases, but it was so cheap, it was hard to take seriously, as it completely lacked the novel's weight.

i'm all for another dune. i was pleased with denis take on blade runner, so i have faith he can tackle herbert's complex and layered vision.
  • I would actually love this to be remade, the original is very rough and i understand how people find it boring but it deserves a fresh start.

  • So i watched the movie quite a while ago and loved it but this thread made me go back and watch it again and it seems 26 year old Formaldehide has a better appreciation for this film than the 13 year old. I understood it better and saw it was even messier than i gave it credit for but lets see how much after i read the books and dive into the two mini series.
  • Tried to re-watch recently and just skimmed through it. Can't do it right now lol.

December 31 way too long for new Denis
  • You really have to be in the right mindset to watch it, its not a movie that grabs you which is why i can imagine why a lot of people are not fans.
  • Its just ridiculous and silly
  • They had all of those books at the library. I read Dune and thought, wow, that was awesome, I'm going to read this whole series! But in the middle of the fourth or fifth book I had to say, "That's it, I give." Guess I got burned out on them. Trying to remember titles, Dune Messiah, God Emperor, etc. The David Lynch movie is horrible... but David Lynch is great so I don't really get what happened there. I thought Sting looked kind of cool in it, made a decent campy villain.
