‘Resident Evil’ Creator Shinji Mikami Sits Down With ‘Silent Hill’ Creator Keiichiro Toyama to Talk Horror [Video]

With the original Resident Evil recently having its 26th anniversary (though the remake is pretty cool, too), Bokeh Game Studio, the folks behind the upcoming Slitterhead (and Silent Hill), were teasing a little surprise in celebration. That surprise turned out to be a visit to the studio by Resident Evil creator, Shinji Mikami. Mikami also sat down for a little chat with fellow Survival Horror innovator (and Bokeh Game Studio head) Keiichiro Toyama, to talk about (what else?) the genre they created.

The chat is the first episode in a new series called “Golden Hour”, where Bokeh Game Studio invites personalities from the industry in Japan for an intimate discussion about video games. For this first episode, Mikami and Toyama go over the duo’s respective beginnings in the industry, and the leadup to each other’s pivotal moments in the genre. From there, the duo get down to the developments of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, and how they created their respective iconic games.

Interesting to note out of this conversation is Mikami, who likened his time working on Resident Evil to a “prison where you could freely make games.” For his part, when it came to the smaller details of developing Silent Hill, Toyama advised the team to “copy Resident Evil“.

Meanwhile, Bokeh Game Studio’s Slitterhead is currently in development for PC and consoles.

“Blood in the Water” Update Brings New Content and Difficulty Settings to ‘Barotrauma’

FakeFish and Undertow Games have given veteran Barotrauma players a run for their money with the new “Blood in the Water” update. Available now, the update brings with it a new difficulty settings, alongside new content and customization options for the underwater co-op title.

For starters, Blood in the Water adds two new monsters to Barotrauma—the Viperling and a new Spineling variant—which employ poison attacks. Not only that, but the devs have brought back the cave-dwelling Mantis, a monster that used to exist in early Barotrauma builds. Existing monsters have also been tweaked, with Abyss monsters now better at targeting characters inside the submarine for added danger.

New campaign difficulty settings have also been added, with the ability to adjust the campaign difficulty to your liking using one of four presets, or by fine-tuning various parameters yourself. There have also been improvements to the respawning system in multiplayer, which involves the removal of the Reaper’s Tax and replacing it with customizable respawning skill loss penalty. New wrecks and beacon stations have also been added, as well as a new kind of wreck mission.

Other changes with the update include a rebalancing of the diving suits for clearer use cases, as well as reducing the flooding speed to give players more time to react during a hull breach. This is in addition to the various other tweaks to animations and station events.

Barotrauma is available now in full after exiting from Early Access last year.
