Spanish Trifecta: ‘Julia’s Eyes’ Director’s ‘Venom,’ ‘The Body’ and ‘Paranormal Xperience’
Spain is the new France. While French horror has simmered down a bit, Spain is coming off a strong couple of years sharing with the world an array of horror from Pan’s Labyrinth to the REC franchise.
Major news continues the trend as The Orphanage producers Rodar Y Rodar have revealed a new slate of projects to Screen Daily, including Julia’s Eyes director Guillem Morales‘ $17m English-language horror-thriller Venom.
Inside you can find the first details on Venom and The Body, along with new casting for Paranormal Xperience 3D. There’s a whole lot of horror to go around – and this puts a huge smile on my face.
First on the agenda is news that Catalan filmmaker Guillem Morales will direct and co-write Venom with Oriol Paulo, his co-writer on last year’s successful thriller Julia’s Eyes (review), which was co-produced by Guillermo Del Toro and took an impressive $10m through UPI at the Spanish box office.
“ ‘Venom’ will be about a major pharmaceutical company based on a remote island that keeps dangerous snakes to test their venom in the hope of treating serious illnesses, when one day an accident occurs with disastrous consequences.”
“Venom is going to be a big English-language project with a large budget of $17m and will shoot in 2012,” Joaquin Padro, president of Rodar Y Rodar, told ScreenDaily. “We are looking to have an A-list cast for the project and are excited about the film’s potential.”
On the other side of the spectrum, Oriol Paulo is also set to write and direct his own English-language thriller The Body, budgeted at $14m, “about a police inspector investigating a missing dead body, whose chief point of help is the dead woman’s husband, but clues soon reveal he could be the suspect.”
Rodar Y Rodar has also confirmed the lead cast and shooting dates for its hotly anticipated 3D horror-thriller Scars (also known as Paranormal Xperience 3D), directed by promising young filmmaker Sergi Vizcaino and backed by Sony Spain.
The lead cast will consist of Amaia Salamanca, Ursula Corbero, Alba Riba, Oscar Sinela, Luis Fernandez and Maxi Iglesias, all of whom are promising young actors making the transition from popular local television series to film.
“The psychological thriller is about a group of children, each with their own interesting circumstances, who are preyed upon by a mad doctor in an abandoned town.”
Shooting will take place from early May around the city of Barcelona and locations include old salt mine caves and a real haunted house.

Keanu Reeves Describes Untitled Time Loop Thriller from Director Tim Miller as ‘Groundhog Day’ With Sharks
At one point known as Shiver, Tim Miller‘s (Deadpool, Terminator: Dark Fate) next movie doesn’t yet have a title, but star Keanu Reeves offers a very intriguing tease this week.
Chatting with Collider, Reeves explains what drew him to the mysterious upcoming project from director Tim Miller. He tells the outlet, “Sharks. Time machine. Groundhog Day.”
That lines up with early plot details that surfaced earlier this year, with the film said to center on a “smuggler in the middle of a deadly double-cross while on a job in the Caribbean Sea.”
That synopsis continued, “Surrounded by bodies, hostile mercenaries, and bloodthirsty sharks, the man finds himself in a time loop and scrambling to break the cycle.”
Callie Cooke (“The Stranger”), Stefan Kapičić (Deadpool), Steven Waddington (Sleepy Hollow), Nicholas Duvernay (“The White Lotus”), Abraham Popoola (Cruella), Anastasia Safonov, and Bobby Holland Hanton (Thor: Love and Thunder) also star.
Ian Shorr (Splinter, Infinite) penned the screenplay for the sci-fi thriller, which had previously been described as having shades of Edge of Tomorrow and The Shallows.
