Jane Levy Talks Prosthetics And Practical Effects In ‘The Evil Dead’
Fede Alvarez started shooting The Evil Dead in New Zealand almost two weeks ago and star Jane Levy has dropped a few hints regarding the amount of practical effects and prosthetics in the piece.
Speaking to The Marin Independent Journal she said, “I really wanted to work on ‘Evil Dead’ because of how different it is from ‘Suburgatory.’ I guess that’s my main goal in this industry, to work on different stuff and to play a wide range of characters. That process of creating a new person is so fun for me. I love the initial makeup/hair tests before the start of a new job; I’m always campaigning for a new hair color or length, anything to look as different as possible.
This role also intrigued me because of how much I will learn, mostly technical stuff like special effects. That’s fascinating to me. I had to get my body “casted” for this role so they can make me prosthetics. That process entailed getting your whole body covered in green goo, like the stuff they put in your mouth for a tooth casting, and then being papier-mâchéd. It was the coolest thing ever.”
Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Elizabeth Blackmore (“The Legend Of The Seeker”) and Jessica Lucas (Cloverfield, “Melrose Place”) also star, with Lucas playing the best friend of a girl going through withdrawal (Levy) who is also a nurse. Blackmore is playing the fiancee of Fernandez and new to the group. The film echoes Raimi’s original and will carry a serious tone. Bruce Campbell is rumored to make a cameo as another character.
Raimi, Campbell and Rob Tapert are producing with Ghost House Pictures. Alvarez is directing and co-wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues. Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body) revised the latest draft. The Evil Dead will roam its POV through theaters on April 12, 2013.
Described as “Ted meets ET,” David Mikalson’s raunchy comedy Goblin is being brought to life over at A24, and Will Forte (“The Four Seasons”) is now in talks to star.
Deadline first reported the news this afternoon.
Kenneth Branagh has been cast to voice the titular Goblin in the upcoming A24 movie, with the character said to be “green-colored” as well as “anatomically correct.”
Skyler Gisondo (Superman) is reportedly playing the Goblin’s human best friend.
The mysterious project sounds a bit like films including A Gnome Named Gnorm and more recently, Frankie Freako, though it’s important to note that it’s not billed as a horror movie.
Deadline details, “After [Mikalson] hatched the idea to make an outrageous buddy comedy about a goblin, using a practical puppet and operating outside the Hollywood system, his script quickly got him a rep team. While others might have eyed the raunchy comedy as a writing sample or planned to wait to see the micro-budget version Mikalson has been directing in Kentucky, A24 jumped all over it. The hot indie essentially has agreed to finance a full feature.”
“There was a lot of interest, but A24 came with what Mikalson really wanted, after spending all his money crafting the puppet title character: they acquired the movie and agreed to let him make it with a significantly increased budget than what he had left after creating the anatomically correct title character,” Deadline’s report goes on to explain.
What does the titular Goblin actually look like? Well, a cake that Mikalson had whipped up for his reps might give us our first look at what to expect. Deadline explains the photo you’ll see down below, “Take a look at the cake he commissioned with Marc Gravelle at Cake Art in West Hollywood, to present to his reps as thanks for making his dream come true.”
