Have you ever been in a car with a friend who isn’t as into horror as you are, and a random piece of music from one of your favorite horror movies (say, the theme from Halloween II) pops up on you iPod? Personally, I love it when that happens because my friend usually looks at me like I’m insane for listening to whatever is playing, thus giving me a reason to tell them what it is, what movie it’s from and to watch it.
I’m not what you’d call a “music person.” I like music, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t really get the same pleasure most people do from it, and my taste is very limited. I know a lot of songs but I could never tell you who sang it and I know a lot of musicians/bands but I couldn’t tell you any of their songs. The only place I really listen to music is in the car and the songs I listen to are either showtunes, oldies or random songs that I heard from movie soundtracks. I realize that makes me a little odd but I’ve always just been more of a movie/TV/video game person. Music is the one area that never really clicked with me. All of that being said, I LOVE the theme for Halloween II.
Is it weird that it’s not the theme from the original Halloween? Maybe, but there’s just something so awesome about the synth score of Halloween II. I remember watching it for the first time and after Loomis delivers that iconic (and admittedly cheesy) “You don’t know what death is” line, the new 80s-ified theme commences and you are suddenly transported into the world of Halloween again.
I finally got to see Halloween II on the big screen back in October and it was magical. Listening to that piece at a very high volume in a movie theater is incredibly satisfying. I probably listen to orchestral pieces more than any other type of music, but I get that I’m a little weird in that aspect.
I also love listening to Pino Donaggio’s “Bucket of Blood” from Carrie, Goblin’s Suspiria theme and Charlie Clouser’s “Hello Zepp” from Saw. So to help me not feel like a total geek (not that I’m ashamed of that, mind you), let me know what horror themes/scores you jam out to in your car!
