December isn’t the kindest month for horror fans. Often the only horror films that get released are awful bargain-bin films or low-quality, Christmas-themed films. Rarely is a December-released horror film financially successful, but sometimes the counter-programming can work to the film’s advantage and turn it into a huge success. With any luck, Michael Dougherty’s Krampus will join the select few films that have broken the mold and become a critical darling and/or a financial success. While we wait and see if that will be the case we thought we would take a look at 10 of those horror films* that are part of that club by being successful (meaning the film made a significant profit or has garnered at least a decent-sized cult following)** despite being released in the month of December.
*Films considered for this list are those that had an initial release in December in the United States.
