Welcome to Camp Coyote.

Alexandre Aja (High TensionThe Hills Have Eyes) is heading into the VR arena with anthology series “Campfire Creepers,” which looks to be a new generation’s “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”. The series, produced by Oculus, Future Lighthouse and Dark Corner, “invites the viewer to join the fire circle at Camp Coyote as a group of campers take turns telling scary stories, leading you on an immersive ride into your darkest childhood fears.”

The first two episodes, “The Skull of Sam” and “Midnight March, starring horror legend Robert Englund, will play at the Tribeca Film Festival this month, with the fest hosting the North American premiere of “The Skull of Sam,” immersive in Cinema360 on Saturday, April 21, and the World Premiere of “Midnight March,” immersive in the VR Arcade on Friday, April 20A special partnership with D-Box will include their next-level haptic motion seats as part of the installation and screening experience.

The episodes then release worldwide on Samsung Gear and the Oculus Rift via Dark Corner (downloadable on iOS, Android, Oculus/Gear VR, Daydream, and Rift) on April 21.

Long before written language, cinema or television, there were campfire stories,” Aja said in a statement. “And a group of youth scaring the living bejeezus out of each other on dark nights at summer camp is a tradition as rich and eternal as our own nightmares. I wanted to bring this age-old pastime to life in a way that has never been done before – through stereoscopic 360-degree Virtual Reality. This was my chance to play in the deeply nostalgic space of late ’70s and ’80s horror anthology classics, while also engaging with a new filmmaking medium that is still thrillingly open to innovation. My goal was to craft a rollercoaster ride of twists and scares that will have you jumping back in fright – and then laughing at yourself once you’ve taken the headset off.”

Preview the immersive VR experience with a first-look trailer below.

“Campfire Creepers” is produced by Oculus, Future Lighthouse and Dark Corner, and created by Alexandre Aja, Casey Cooper Johnson and Martin Andersen.

Writer in the horror community since 2008. Editor in Chief of Bloody Disgusting. Owns Eli Roth's prop corpse from Piranha 3D. Has four awesome cats. Still plays with toys.
